PRESIDENT’S NOTE Dan Bouet

I hope you’ve had a chance to attend one or more of our club events over the past couple of months. It’s our busy season, and the calendar has no shortage of great activities to choose from. Kudos to all the volunteers who dedicate their time to making these events happen!

We just wrapped up our final HPDE at Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP). Unfortunately, the track was recently sold, and the new ownership does not plan to keep it open. Operations will cease by May, so this was our last chance to host an event there. We had a great turnout with full run groups and even brought in a photographer to capture our final visit there. During lunch, we held parade laps, and a few former DE participants and guests came out to give the track one last (or first) go-around. If you’ve never attended an HPDE, it’s an excellent way to properly enjoy your Porsche in a controlled environment—without risking your driver’s license. We host several HPDEs throughout the year, and the next one is coming up on April 19th at the Podium Club in Casa Grande.

Speaking of HPDE, it takes a village to organize these events and there are lots of folks in charge of various aspects of the event. Ealing Jahn, our new Autocross Chair, has also stepped up as our Chief Driving Instructor (CDI) for the HPDE program. Congratulations and thank you, Ealing, for volunteering your time and energy.

A special thank you also goes out to John Dowling, who has served as CDI for the past 2–3 years. We truly appreciate your dedication, and we hope to continue seeing you at events, sharing your wealth of experience with students on track.

Travis Sutton, our Equipment Chairperson recently suffered a mountain biking accident and is focusing on resting up and healing from some not-so-minor injuries. The equipment-moving aspect of the role will be taking a break while his mobility comes back. Best wishes to Travis and to a speedy recovery!

Lastly, our Social Chair position is still vacant. If you’re interested in stepping into this important role, please reach out to me. The club hosts many social gatherings, including a few larger events, and we’d greatly benefit from someone taking the lead in planning and organizing them.

Hope to see you at an event soon, Dan Bouet

From the EDITORS Gregg and Ali Bull

I cannot believe that March has come and gone just like that……WOW. The Club had something for everyone this past month, and I mean EVERYONE.

We had a driving tour to Lake Roosevelt/Globe/Superior, Mike Kennedy was kind enough to write a review, see page 36.

Dennis’s annual All Porsche Grand Display was a huge hit, read all about it on pages 40-41. Mike Ferring has also put together a little photo exposé on the Grand Display event, see pages 42-45.

The March Members meeting was held at The Persian Room, always a tasty encounter.

The Autocross event was held at the AMP Skidpad, check out who got the bragging rights on pages 32-35.

This year’s New Member Day was held at the We-Ko-Pa casino and we had a great turnout. Rook arranged a “Welcome New Members Drive” the following day and one of our newest members, Colby Sienkiewicz, was kind enough to write about his experience.

The AZPCA Ladies were treated to a Hike and Lunch, Rita has written a nice article, see pages 48-49

Porsche n’ Pancakes made its way to Harrold’s Cave Creek Coral for something a little different.

Mark and Jeanne organized an overnight drive to Tucson, more about that next month.

The final HPDE event at AMP was held, sadly the facility has been sold but Dan & Co. have many other venues planned so not all is lost, check out the upcoming events on page 31.

Looking ahead to April members again have a plethora of events to choose from…. Monthly Meeting at Crust Simply Italian, AutoX at AMP, The Vegas Fun Run, AZPCA Ladies are at Vicinos, HPDE is at the Podium Club, Porsches n’ Pancakes is at the 5&Diner, AZPCA Ladies are also hosting an overnight adventure to La Posada and finally we have a drive to Saguaro Lake. Check out the AZPCA website for all the upcoming events….. az.pca.org.

Stay safe and enjoy the ride.

“It’s Not Just About the Cars, It’s About the People”

A Tribute to Our Friends in the Arizona Outlaws 356 Club

As members of the Arizona Porsche Club of America (AZPCA), we often say that our passion for these incredible machines is what brings us together but it’s the people that make us stay. We are, at our core, a family. And when we lose members of that family, the loss is deeply felt by all, whether in AZPCA, the Arizona Outlaws 356 Club, or the broader Porsche community.

Recently, we have lost two long-standing and valued members of the Arizona Outlaws 356 Club: Scott Evans and Terry Keeney. Their absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but their contributions, their friendships, and their spirits will continue to resonate with all who knew them.

Scott Evans took his final drive across the desert on December 23rd, passing away peacefully surrounded by family. A longtime Arizona Outlaw, Scott’s energy, technical expertise, and passion for the Porsche 356 were boundless. Many of us remember his integral role in the 2019 High Desert Holiday in Flagstaff, where he streamlined event operations with his trademark ingenuity, playfully naming his digital tallying system the TABUTRON 9000. He was a quiet but unstoppable force, always driving forward whether riding across Iowa in the grueling 8-day RAGBRAI cycling event or taking his 356 on long journeys across the desert. Scott’s car was bought for college because he thought it was a cool car. He never had any others, just Deborah and his lil’ red. It’s taken them through their entire 30-year marriage with two little girls, dogs and blankets stuffed in the back until they grew too big to fit. It will remain in the family as it always has been.

His red 1959 sunroof coupe was more than a car; it was a symbol of his adventurous spirit, one that will continue to inspire us all.

Terry and Chuck left the Death Valley group and were on their way to Ventura when Terry's 356 was T-boned by a Toyota Tacoma that killed Terry instantly and left Chuck with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries. Terry was a kind, generous soul whose love for the 356 and the camaraderie of the Porsche community was evident to everyone who knew him. He was more than just an enthusiast he was a friend, a mentor, and a passionate member of our community. Chuck, a talented Porsche mechanic known for his expertise and dedication, now faces a long road to recovery, and our thoughts and support are with him in this difficult time.

These tragedies serve as a solemn reminder that while we cherish these vintage machines, it is the friendships we form around them that truly matter. Our cars bring us together, but it is our shared experiences, the laughter, the drives, and the bonds we build along the way that define our journey.

Memorial Tribute to our Fallen Brethern in the AZ Outlaws 356 Club

On behalf of the AZPCA Board of Directors and our entire membership, we extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of Scott Evans and Terry Keeney. We also send our heartfelt support to Chuck Croteau as he continues his recovery.

To all in our community: Drive safely, cherish the moments, and never take for granted the incredible people this passion brings into our lives.

Scott Evans

Terry Keeney

Rest in peace, Scott and Terry. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

Scott, Terry and Chuck

Drive on…….

Respectfully submitted, Frank J. Grimmelmann

AZPCA Ladies-Only La Posada Overnight Drive

April 26-27, 2025

This April overnight event is for the ladies only!

After a beautiful drive up from the Valley on Saturday morning, we will stop for lunch along the way to Winslow, Arizona, for an overnight stay and dinner at the La Posada Hotel.

La Posada, “the resting place,” was one of the finest hotels ever built in the Southwest when it opened in 1930. And this historic hotel on Route 66 is still charming after all this time. Rooms have been restored carefully, and many pieces of the Mary Colter design remain, along with extensive artwork and gardens throughout the property. There is also a large trading post on site full of southwest treasures. Visit https://laposada.org for more info.

After settling in, we will gather for an extended informal Happy Hour, then enjoy dinner at the famous and beautiful Turquoise Room for southwest contemporary cuisine. https://theturquoiseroom.com

On Sunday, we will gather at the legendary landmark, Standin’ on the Corner Park, for a group photo. The park has captured the hearts and imaginations of music lovers and road-trippers alike along Route 66. Made famous by the Eagles’ hit song, it is a must-see!

You may wish to explore downtown Winslow and other Route 66 locations before heading home on your own. Event Organizer: Geneva Sorum, GSorum@hotmail.com

AZPCA Regional eNEWS

AZPCA REGION eNEWS

AZPCA Region publishes several emails each month to notify the members of the upcoming social and driving events and other pertinent Region business and activity information. These emails are known as eNews email blasts and will be identified by the PCA Banner as you see above.

It has come to the Region’s attention that several hundred members are not receiving the AZPCA Region’s eNews email blasts. This may be because the PCA National Office may not have your correct email address or there may be a technical problem with your email address. Or the member at one time elected to opt out of receiving the emails and would like to begin receiving them.

AZPCA Region would like to help the members in resolving this issue of you not receiving the eNews emails. If you are not receiving any of the emails that are labeled with the above banner, and prefer to receive them, please email the Region’s Communications Chair, Kenny Mitchell at kenmitchell-director@az.pca.org

Meet this Month’s Featured Member - Jill Wilkerson

1. When did you join PCA?

We joined the club in October of 2022 after my husband purchased his first Porsche which is a 2018 911 GT2 RS.

2. What Porsche(s) do you have 2017 911 Targa (Me) 2018 911 GT2 RS (Husband)

3. Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Waco, Texas. My husband is from Conroe, Texas. We lived there for 33 years where we raised our children and had our businesses. In 2018, we retired and moved to North Scottsdale.

4. Family?

Leroy and I have known each other since childhood and have been married for 39 years. We have 3 children. Weston 34, Whitney 33 and Haley 28. Weston and Whitney live in Scottsdale. Haley lives in Silverthorne, CO.

5. Work background or trade?

I have a business marketing degree and a minor in fashion from University of North Texas. We owned several businesses in Texas. We founded, franchised and published the Home Focus Real Estate Guide Leroy was involved in several aspects of the real estate industry including home building, investments, both rental properties and flipping houses. I help him with that.

6. What makes your car special?

The 2 highlights about my car would be that it is a Targa and the paint to sample color acid green. The color is a great conversation starter and has allowed us to meet so many nice people.

7. Next upgrade?

I would love for the car to have a more “racey” appearance. Carbon fiber accents, some striping and a larger spoiler. I think adding some acid green to the interior to allow a more sporty look would be a nice touch. The car has finally been named with the help of one of our club members, Acid Queen. My custom plates will soon say ACIDQWN

8. Have you personalized your car?

Not yet but hope to in the near future.

9. Favorite memory with a car?

Displaying our cars at The Polo Match at Westworld was a highlight for me. It was fun dressing the part and of course matching the car. She won 2 awards which were her first so that was a very special memory.

10. Where/Why did you buy your Porsche?

Leroy found the car on the website for Champion Porsche in Pompano Beach, Fl. He was sure this was the car for me. I was not convinced. At the time, my dream car was a white corvette. The car arrived in December of 2022 and the story I tell is “Santa got confused”. I asked for a white Corvette and received an acid green Porsche. As it turned out, Santa was right (again). I did need an acid green Porsche. We have enjoyed this car so much. It’s a fun car to drive and we have met so many fabulous people thru the car and club.

11. High school nickname?

Juanita Lopez

12. Top 3 cars you would own? I have 4!!!!

1. McLaren Senna

2. Porsche 918 Spyder

3.Corvette ZR1

Twenty of the drivers are PCA members and twenty-one were PCA guests that enjoy attending Arizona Region PCA autocross events because of the unique autocross program format that differs from other sports car club organizations Fourteen members drove their Group “P” Porsche car and six members elected to drive their Group “X” non-Porsche car.

The forty-one drivers enjoyed an event with a simple counterclockwise direction designed course with a quick loop that you entered from a clockwise direction. The course also had the usual gates and a slalom with the start/finish in the showcase viewing spot.

For this time of the year, the weather wasn’t too chilly in the early morning hours and stayed very mild throughout the day with a little breeze. Essentially, the weather was not your typical Arizona Region perfect weather, but at least it was dry as opposed to that it rained a couple days prior to the event.

For this event, there were only a few “Cone Annihilators” and the cones were very happy about that, but the usual suspects were living up to their reputations such as, Eric T., Scott O., and Brian M. with multiple cone mutilations. Eric T., one of our previous record setting “Top Cone Killers” was demonstrating a “what not to do” example for his son, Andrew, and daughter, Anastasia. Andrew was cone-free, but Anastasia displaced three cones along with her dad doing the same

Each driver ran three-timed laps in the morning session and four-timed laps in the afternoon session, except one driver who only took three timed laps in the afternoon because apparently, he did not hear during the lunch break where the Autocross Chairs announced the afternoon run format of four-timed laps.

Last month, it was reported that new member, Douglas G., driving his 2021 Porsche Carrera, was having a lot of fun and he decided to attend his second autocross event and his best lap time was 47.540 seconds which he drove on his third lap in the afternoon session. Good going, Douglas. You have to wonder did he really caught the competition bug? You have to say so because he signed up for his first Track High Performance Driver Education (HPDE) event last month (March)

In Group “P” action, Jonathan, driving his Green Lizard Porsche, set out with the winning pace on his first timed lap in the morning session that no-one actually could even touch all day long. On Jonathan’s second timed lap, he picked up another 95-thousandsth of a second in the morning session and that was not only his best-timed lap of the day, but was also the top time for the entire event. Please do not read any negative thoughts on anyone following Jonathan’s times, because those times do not reflect the lack of anyone’s driving ability or skill levels. Jonathan really was very quickly hauling the mail, at this event.

Eric S, driving his 2006 Porsche Carrera Outlaw, drove his best lap on his third timed lap in the morning session. Following Eric was Ealing J, driving his 2012 Porsche Carrera S and he drove his best lap on his second timed lap in the afternoon session and was only .134 second behind Eric. Kim K., driving his 2021 Porsche GT4, drove his best-timed lap on his fourth timed lap in the afternoon session and was only .694 second behind Ealing.

Review - AZPCA Autocross March 8, 2025

In Group “X”, member Travis M. drove his non-Porsche car with his best lap occurring on his second lap in the afternoon session. Arizona Mountain Region member, Steve A, drove his best lap on his third lap in the afternoon session. Steve had consistent times for the entire event.

Following Steve was Yuri E., and he drove his best lap on his second lap in the afternoon session and was only .115 second behind Steve. Also following with a close time was Eric T. with only .059 second behind Yuri which he achieved on his third lap in the afternoon session.

There are only two more autocross events remaining this season and both events are during this month (April). Also, the last event, more than likely, may be the last and final Arizona Region autocross event to be held at AMP because the property is “For Sale” with a potential party acquiring an interest in the property for a future commercial business operation.

The two remaining events are April 5 and April 26. This information and how to register can be found on the Region’s Event Calendar and Motorsport Reg.

If you have any questions, please regarding driving, the “Taste of Autocross Program, or being a volunteer, please contact the Autocross Co-Chairs, Kim K. & Rick A., at autocross@az.pca.org

Driving Tour Review - Roosevelt Lake/Globe/Superior

A great time was had by all who attended the Roosevelt Lake, Globe and Superior Drive.

After the necessary drivers meeting on a cool and sunny morning in the Bass Pro parking lot, the drivers and passengers climbed in their cars and made a beeline for the Beeline Highway. Due to the large attendance the cars left in two groups spread roughly ten minutes apart. A variety of Porsche’s were represented including Cayman’s and Boxter’s along with 911’s from various eras, including two air-cooled beauties. Even an iconic transaxle P-928 made the trip

Starting a short drive through town the cars made their way to AZ-87 northward on twisting mountain roads toward Payson. The next leg of the drive took us south on AZ-188, through the small towns of Punkin Center and Tonto Basin before eventually paralleling Roosevelt Lake’s picturesque shoreline. The lake was adorned with many fishing boats casting into the morning shadows.

Everyone would enjoy the trip’s first stop and group photo opportunity at Roosevelt Dam’s scenic overlook. The drive continued to US-60 and across the 695-foot-long structural steel New Pinto Creek bridge which was completed in 2022. The final leg took us through Globe and onto Superior where we all stopped for a great BBQ lunch (and just a little liquid libation) at The Silver King Smokehouse.

Luckily the red flag warned winds didn’t hit until after lunch when we all disassembled and made our way back to our homes only to eagerly anticipate the club’s next group drive

Driving Tour Review - Welcome New Members Drive

Sunday March 16th was an exciting day for me because it was my first club event. Having only been a member for a week, I had no idea what to expect on today’s drive. My wife and I drove our 1977 911s to a Scottsdale parking lot to meet up with the other club members. Right away I knew we were in the right place because I saw the most beautiful rainbow of Porsche’s gathered together alongside their proud owners. We pulled into the back of the parking lot and were quickly waved towards the front to a spot that seemed to be saved just for us. As we exited our car, we were greeted by so many friendly people.

As we settled in, an announcement was made that a safety meeting was about to begin. We were reminded to obey the traffic laws and try to stay together as a group. Today’s event was the Welcome New Members Drive from Scottsdale to North Phoenix, passing through Cave Creek and Carefree to Seven Springs with a final lunch stop in Cave Creek.

After the meeting, we all returned to our cars. Engines started and cars began to leave one at a time, in a game of follow the leader. Thirty some beautiful Porsche’s following each other on a Sunday drive. What could be better? There was something about being in the middle of this pack of cars that made me feel a kinship to the other club members. Everywhere I looked I saw our group. I rolled down my window so I could hear the beautiful flat sixes play their symphony. Others were experiencing it too. Not just club members but many onlookers with gawking eyes, pointing fingers, smiles and thumbs up. Speaking of smiles, my wife said I had one on my face the entire day.

As for the drive, we took many long, winding roads to our final destination, which was fine by me. I don’t remember the names of most of the streets with the twists and turns but I do know that somebody did their homework because Sunday’s drive was an absolute thrill. Okay, I do remember 7 Springs Road. But that’s because it was an unforgettable roller coaster of a Nürburgring type of road. Amazing! And to drive it with 30 new found friends? Phenomenal! Afterwards, we drove to Cave Creek for a fantastic barbecue lunch at The Horny Toad. It was great to socialize with others. We talked about our day, our lives and of course our cars. What a perfect day.

All Porsche Grand Display at Carefree - 2025

We were very lucky with the weather this year as a beautiful sunrise met all the volunteers heading rapidly to arrive at Carefree Town Center and help set up and get ready for the day.

A big thank you to all who entered their cars for the display. Without you there is no show.

It takes a lot of people to put a show like this on well and it happened again. So, thank all our nineteen volunteers for all their help. Thanks especially to my partner in putting on the show, Bill Stubbs, who does all the signs, designs, picks up and returns the tents and coolers, and runs the audio system for announcements, National Anthem and quiet Jazz Music all day. Bill is also the first one there on show day to put up the barricades and the last one to leave after all is loaded, stored, cleared, and put away. Without Bill, there is also no show.

Thanks to Rook Younger who took a picture of every car at entry and got a print back to all the same day.

Special thanks to our wonderful photographers, Rob Mains and Paul Hanson, who freely give of their time and take pictures all day at the show.

Finally, thanks to Manager Steve Prokopek and Mayor John Crane of Carefree for their support and hospitality in putting on this show.

It is a bit of work, but it is worthwhile when you see how much both our Porsche Club members and friends and the public seeing the show enjoy it.

We started loading cars this year at 7:30 AM, one half later than the last two years and gave out awards a little before the advertised time of 1:30 PM Next year we will give out awards at 1:00 PM so the overall day will be a bit shorter.

Review - AZPCA Ladies Only - Hike & Lunch

On March 19, 20 members joined in for an exciting PCA-lead field trip. What a perfect weather day for our field trip. First stop, 10:00 am brunch at Little Snitch, followed by a fun hike at the Pima Dynamite trailhead to see the stunning crested saguaro.

Little Snitch was a delightful brunch experience including fresh baked goods, made-to-order omelets and breakfast sandwiches, crafted with the finest ingredients, and a full bar. We took advantage of the charming garden patio seating ambiance, where friendly service and unique decor set the perfect backdrop for our memorable brunch outing. Special thanks to Christine Coleman for securing seven tables for our large group.

After Brunch, at 11:00am, we headed out to the Pima Dynamite trailhead, approximate 3.5 miles north of Little Snitch.

Pima Dynamite trailhead is located at Northeast corner of Pima Rd. and Dynamite Blvd. It is a fullservice trailhead with a covered amphitheater, shade ramadas, restrooms, water, and interpretive signage. There was a large paved parking lot to accommodate the very many Porsches.

We took the short 1.5-mile roundtrip hike to see the unique crested saguaro. Thanks to Mary Sholtis for the breathtaking add-on hike around the boulders to an impressive lookout.

Crested saguaros are exceptionally rare, with only an estimated one in 200,000 saguaros exhibiting this unique growth pattern. They can be found scattered throughout the Sonoran Desert, which spans southern Arizona, parts of California, and northwestern Mexico and we are very lucky to have a simply beautiful one in the Pima Dynamite trailhead.

Review - AZPCA Ladies Only - Hike & Lunch

Comments from our members on the field trip:

"Always so much fun to get together with the PCA ladies! A great hike with amazing views and my new favorite brunch spot Little Snitch Loved the home-made "pop-tarts" with an amazing blueberry filling - and sprinkles! Who doesn't love sprinkles?"

Emily Lane

“To the native Tohono O'odham people, the saguaro cactus is considered an honored relative that sustains them both spiritually and physically. According to their mythology, the first saguaro was created when a young woman sank deep into the earth and rose back out as a giant cactus, arms raised toward the heavens”

“We are blessed to have one of nature’s true miracles in our back yard the crested saguaro. The featured destination of our hike was the beautiful crested Saguaro you see captured in this picture”.

Why? It’s simple. Because I know what’s going to happen. So I don’t really care. I watch all the F1 telecasts and, if I can’t see them live, I record them for playback when I can. Also, I subscribe to Planet F1. And what I get are updates on the rumors, the backbiting, the total soap opera that is the F1 circus, delivered to my e-mailbox, on a daily basis.

But wait, you say, the cinematography is good … and that’s true … so is the soundtrack … but that’s not enough.

The last six years, yes, six whole years, I’ve devoted this space to a review of the series. I’ve turned blue in the face from exhorting the producers to do something, anything, to get beyond the cry to “push, push, push.” I feel like I’m trying to give birth. Excuse me while I have a bout of morning sickness.

I’ve recommended they dive into just how to drive one of these monsters. Who are the mechanics, what do they do, why, how much do they get paid? When a team makes upgrades, what are they? And how do they know the upgrades work? Which means just what is an F1 simulator, where they actually test this stuff? What’s the performance envelope of current F1 cars? Why do companies sponsor? How much do they pay? For what exposure? What does an F1 “pilot” actually do, off the track, during a full race weekend?

And that’s just off the top of my head. None of this. Nothing is covered, beyond which driver (not car) is fast, which driver is slow, and what’s going to happen to them as a result. Ever.

To lift a phrase shamelessly from a clothing retailer who used to advertise regularly when I was growing up, “an informed consumer is our best customer.” Right? What’s so hard to get, Netflix? If I want to watch a soap opera, I’ll tune in “The Days of our Lives.”

Oh, I’ve compared Drive to the golf series, the tennis series, the Indycar series. I even watched the series on polo. Why? Let’s just say I was curious. And what did I find? The same derivative format A demonic commitment to a hyped-up human drama To the near total elimination of all else related to the sport. Although, oh wait, I did learn how they score polo … what a chucka is, or is it chucker. I don’t remember, and I don’t care.

No, what’s happening here is something we see again and again. An unwavering commitment to what works. It’s a pattern. First, there’s the breakthrough event. Like season one of Drive. Good for Netflix, nothing like it had been done before. And it put F1 on the map in the US, for the first time. Which, for us car nuts, was a great thing.

Then they began to slavishly stick to the formula. To what works.

Danielle’s Column - I Give Up

Is it laziness? Rampant risk-aversion? I don’t know. But I do see it in other places, like the creation of an entertainment “franchise.” The book, the movie, the Broadway play, the cast album, the road show, the sequel, another sequel. It’s safe. It’s boring. It’s overdone.

Hey, creating that franchise is hard. It’s risky. It’s expensive. I get that. It’s hard to get out of one’s “comfort bubble.” Especially when your owners or shareholders, and their accountants, are breathing down your neck.

How hard? To find out, I did a Chat GPT search on “complacency.” Out came a document titled “Over 100 Inspiring Quotes to Overcome Complacency.” In categories, no less. Here are a few highlights.

Under the subhead “Quotes on the Trap of Complacency” was “Complacency is the enemy of progress,” “The comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there,” and “Momentum is lost in the quagmire of contentment,”

Under the subhead “Quotes to Break Free from Complacency” were “Take risks, that’s where the magic begins,” and “Never mistake a hint of success as a sign to stop pushing forward.”

Maybe I’ll forward the list to Netflix. Then again, maybe I’ll first finish season three of “The White Lotus.” Or maybe I’ll imprint on my forehead this quote from the list, “The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement.” I don’t know. I don’t know.

Kimberly’s Korner - Facts, Figures and Fallacies

Sadly, but happily, I traded in my Porsche 1999 Carrera for a 2017 Macan. It was for practical reasons, not at all like the passionate, emotional reason I bought my 911 only 18 months ago. I simply needed a four door and an SUV for many reasons

Initially, I felt I betrayed the whole reason for buying a Porsche: excellent design, speed, and the brand’s sports car heritage. I confess, I felt like a swinging single that had turned into a soccer mom.

I’m happy to report, that’s not been my experience. The Macan drives like a dream. It is so easy, and still has that pick -up and speed when you need it. It’s so comfortable, and I have to admit it’s easier (and more graceful) to get in and out of.

Despite this power and ease, it does feel a little like driving a toy car when compared to the vintage 911. Both have leather interiors, and leather-lined steering wheels. But you could smell the leather in the 911. It felt like heavy, thick, luxurious leather. Yes, there was a tangible difference between the interior feel of the vintage Porsche and the Macan. Somewhat like what some people describe as the difference between analog music on vinyl and the same song on a streaming service.

The Macan feels lighter. (Actually, it’s heavier: between 3,902 lbs to 4,244 lbs, compared to the 1999 Carrera’s weight of between 2,910 lbs to 3,197 lbs.) The 911 felt like well-designed mechanics pushing heavy steel and metal to its whim. Pushing on the gas pedal felt like I simply overpowered the car to do what I wanted, and it was so rewarding. Almost like a muscular engagement with the machine. I could tell that decades of sports car design, trial-and-error, and dedicated engineering made the 911 as responsive as it was, despite the odds.

Since the Macan feels lighter, there isn’t the same sense of overcoming by brute force. It simply does what I want it to. I could almost steer it with a finger (although of course I wouldn’t!) I only need my big toe to get the gas pedal and brake to respond (although of course I wouldn’t!) With the 911, I had to push down with my whole foot on all three pedals: gas, brake, and clutch. But what a reward for the effort!

Kimberly’s Korner - Facts, Figures and Fallacies

All in all, I love my Macan. It’s an easier ride, and it still goes fast. It’s small enough to zip in and out of traffic, but big enough to see around other cars. With the 911, I felt I could outsmart and outrun the other cars, but I needed to be focused and vigilant.

When the time comes, I’d like to buy another 911. I’ll never lose my love of a real sports car. That time will be when I can focus on really learning to drive it with great dedication, some advanced training, and a better understanding of all it can do. Until then, I’ll drive my Macan with joy and appreciation.

After all, it’s still a Porsche.

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event Cancellation Policy

Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events.

Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:

Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

Reimbursement & Stipend Policy for AZPCA HPDE Events:

1. Reimbursement is provided to 5 key workers / volunteers for actual round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts), and if applicable, $120/night stipend for lodging/ incidentals. If it is not an overnight event and/or a requirement, then spend is reduced to $40. Key workers are volunteers that are attending the event solely to work the event but not participate in the event. Examples could be: Grid worker(s), Safety inspector(s), Timing and Scoring Chair, Safety Chair, Event Chair, CDI. Excludes: Corner workers/flaggers.

2. A corner worker/flagger is offered a $100 stipend or a $175 MSR credit for a future HPDE event, by choice of the flagger.

3. Other non-critical volunteer positions are provided a lunch (lunch will either paid for individually or provided as part of event to all participants).

4. The Event Organizer is reimbursed for fuel costs related to event planning/execution and round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts and log).

5. Continue to offer discounted registration fees for approved AZPCA Instructors.

Policy adopted by majority vote of the Board of Directors at the June 2023 BOD meeting

McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - Getting Ready for Summer

I don’t know about you, but I hate this time of year. I know the weather is near perfect, but I know its fleeting. Soon the heat will be here full time, is your Porsche ready?

Change of season is always a good time to check your tires and tire pressure. With the heat your tires will increase tire pressure so it’s a good idea to check pressures all the way around. Also check the tire condition paying close attention to the inside edges (hard ones to see) of the tires. Checking the date code for the week and year of the tire manufactured is also smart. Tires in AZ tend to dry out before they wear out of cars that are not driven much.

Your Porsche’s cooling system is pushed to the limit during our hot summers. In fact, Porsche does a lot of their hot weather testing of their new cars here in AZ! One of the most important components to your cooling system that is most overlooked is the radiator(s). Sports cars love to pull up leaves and junk from the road and over time they will clog the front radiators. Make sure to get down on the ground with a flashlight to inspect the radiators, nothing will cause a Porsche to overheat that a shopping bad stuck in a radiator. If there is a lot of trash in the front bumper it may be necessary to remove the front bumper and clean out the trash between the AC condenser and the radiators. Your car will run much cooler, and your AC will be as well.

Coolant leaks are a real problem in the summer. If you have been adding coolant on a regular basis to your Porsche over the winter to get by that won’t work in the summer. Having your Porsche’s cooling system pressure checked is a good idea. If you can take your coolant cap off the coolant reservoir when the car is COLD and you hear a hiss of air being released your cooling system is holding pressure. If you don’t get a hiss when releasing the cap, you mostly likely have a coolant leak somewhere. Make sure you don’t cross thread the cap and make sure the cap is tight.

McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - Getting Ready for Summer

The AC system that keeps you comfortable during the summer is pushed to the limit. Trash in the front radiators will negatively affect the system and not keep you cool. Low refrigerant charge will also greatly reduce cooling of the system. All Porsche from 99 through 2016 use the older style refrigerant R134A, which is easy to work with. The newer cars 2017+ use Porsche’s new refrigerant R1234yf that requires a special machine. If you hear an air noise coming from the dash while the AC is on you might be low on charge. Not blowing super cold out of the vents is another sign of a low charge.

If you are lucky enough to be somewhere else there are some steps you can do to safely store the car over the summer. Over inflating the tires so they don’t have flat spot is a good idea. Also using a fuel stabilizer so the fuel doesn’t go bad is smart. I also like locking the front trunk with the front hood open so that is the battery goes flat you can easily access it. A trickle charger is recommended. Getting the car hot before parking is good to burn out any moisture that may be in the oil. Cleaning the paint is also good so the dirt and junk don’t harden on the paint sitting in the garage.

One last recommendation for the summer is if you are looking for a new car do your best to find one with ventilated seats, it’s the best option Porsche has come up with in my opinion for the summer.

The Stuttgart Market Letter

After last year’s scheduling conflict, which saw the newly formed Moda Miami event competing against Amelia Island during the same weekend, this year’s events were strategically split across two back-to-back weekends. RM Sotheby’s kicked things off during Moda Miami on February 27 & 28, followed by Gooding & Company’s Amelia Island auction on March 6 & 7, and Broad Arrow Auctions on March 7 & 8. This revised schedule gave each auction its own spotlight, resulting in 78 Porsches crossing the block with a sell-through rate of 85% and a total dollar volume of $35,886,680. With this new format proving successful, it’s safe to say that Florida Car Week has officially arrived.

The most surprising sale of the week wasn’t the RUF CTR, though it certainly grabbed headlines (more on that below). Instead, it was the 1964 Porsche 904 GTS that stole the show for me. If you’ve been following my column, you’ll know that $1M+ race cars from the '50s and '60s have been struggling for years, with a steady stream of no-sales and bids well below estimates. But this time was different. Estimated between $1.5M and $1.8M, the 904 GTS blew past its high estimate, selling for $2,205,000 including buyer’s premium. While one sale doesn’t make a market, it was refreshing to see a classic Porsche race car finally bring strong money.

RUF collectors had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at Florida Car Week, with a CTR3, CTR2, and an original CTR ‘Yellowbird’ all on offer. RM Sotheby’s sold a 2009 CTR3, one of just 31 built, for $1,116,000, while Gooding & Co. auctioned a rare Adriatic Blue CTR2, one of only 18 produced, for an impressive $2,645,000. But the star of the show was the original W09-VIN CTR ‘Yellowbird’, one of only 29 built and likely the lowest-mileage example in existence. Finished in RUF’s iconic Blossom Yellow, it carried an estimate of "in excess of $6M" and sold for $6,055,000 including buyer’s premium. With these results, RUF has firmly cemented itself as a seven-figure brand, right alongside Porsche’s most valuable models.

The 356 market also showed surprising strength, with an 89% sell-through rate across 19 cars a sharp contrast to the recently lower sell-through rates for the model. While many sales landed just below their estimates, there were a few standout results. A 1952 356 1500 Super Coupe brought $235,200, well above recent comps, where similar examples have struggled to break $200,000. Carrera-engined cars also performed well, with a 1959 356A 1600 GS/GT Carrera Speedster selling for $973,000, reinforcing its position as one of the most sought-after 356 variants.

While 993s have been among the auction market’s strongest performers in recent years, Florida Car Week delivered underwhelming results for the model with one notable exception.

Leading the pack was a 1997 911 Turbo S, which sold within its estimate range at $643,000 a solid, if unsurprising, result for one of the most coveted air-cooled Turbo models. Beyond that,

The Stuttgart Market Letter

however, the standard 993 Turbo results were all over the place. Of the three standard Turbos on offer, one failed to sell at $260,000, while another sold well below estimates at $268,800.

But then there was the outlier an Arena Red 993 Turbo that crushed expectations, selling for $260,400 against a $200,000–$225,000 estimate. If there’s one lesson to be learned here, it’s that you should never bet against Arena Red when it comes to 993s. This signature color, made famous in Porsche’s original 993 Turbo “Kills bugs fast” ad campaign, continues to prove that the right spec can still defy estimates.

With a strong sell-through rate, standout RUF results, and a rare success story for vintage Porsche race cars, Florida Car Week made a strong debut as a new fixture on the Porsche auction calendar. With Paris Retromobile behind us and Monterey still months away, all eyes will be on how the market shapes up heading into spring. One thing’s for sure if this year’s Florida auctions are any indication, 2025 is going to be an interesting one.

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!

Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.

For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.

Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.

While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.

How is a typical HPDE day structured?

A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.

The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.

The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.

What do you need to bring?

Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)

We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.

Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.

There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.

Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

Sign up for PCA’s free monthly e-newsletter, Mart Fresh News!

The Porsche Club of America features news, videos, and information about the current market for used Porsches in the monthly Mart Fresh News email newsletter.

Mart shoppers are PCA members who know Porsches, know what they’re looking at, and are serious, ready, willing, and able buyers — not tire kickers. Because PCA members take care of their Porsches, vehicle quality in The Mart is better than other websites. And these are not anonymous buyers and sellers, they are registered PCA members.

The Mart is one of the most visited parts of PCA.org, recording over 650,000 page views per month.

Mart Fresh News also highlights a variety of Porsche listings from PCA’s Mart Classifieds. When you find a vehicle in The Mart, you can be assured that it’s been cared for by a registered PCA member — not some anonymous seller.

In addition to your online Mart ad, you get a summary version of your ad in Porsche Panorama.

It’s a free benefit of membership — there is no charge to place an ad in The Mart!

PCA has 20 registries for those super enthusiastic about their Porsche model

The PCA Registry program was established in 1995 to encourage closer relationships within Porsche model owners in PCA. The program allows PCA members to network with others in their specific area of interest. Sharing of information fosters restoration and maintenance of members’ automobiles. A registry can potentially provide a new resource for historical displays at Parades and other PCA events, along with information for articles in Porsche Panorama. Don’t see a registry for your Porsche? We are also looking for individuals who are interested in starting a registry for a model that doesn’t have an existing registry.

Through the Ages now features the latest club events and programs

New for 2025, the Porsche Club of America History Book contains an overview of the club’s history, followed by individual sections covering specific detailed items. Some sections were designed for use as standalone articles for region newsletters. Individual chapters and page numbers can be “clicked on” from the contents page. Major National Awards are also included.

What’s happening in the Porsche Market Place?

SPOTLIGHT

Just like the 993 Turbo Cabriolet, Porsche never built a production 993 Speedster, only creating two examples. One for Ferdinand Porsche’s great-grandson, and the other for Jerry Seinfeld. Porsche also created a third 993 Speedster recently as a one-off by their special projects division, the same division that created the PCA-commissioned 911 Classic Club Coupe, for an Italian customer who had the car built to fit between his 964 and 997-generation Speedsters. And then there is this one.

This 1995 911 Cabriolet was converted to a Speedster and features a shorter windshield, double-hump tonneau cover from a 964 Speedster, 993 Turbo S rear quarter panels, a 993 Carrera S rear decklid, and 993 Turbo bumpers, rockers, and fenders. It came finished in Guards Red and rides on 18” Speedline-style wheels over 993 Turbo brakes along with Bilstein PSS10 coilovers. The Black leather interior has been fitted with carbon fiber RS-style door panels, RS-style bucket seats, and plenty of other special details. The engine, on the other hand, is pretty much stock aside from mufflers. Now, we have seen this car previously as it failed to sell at a final bid of $226,000 before being sold via offer for $230,000 back in November of 2023. It sold this time around at a final bid of $215,000, which was a bit of a price to pay for putting just over 150 miles on the car. Had the seller played with the engine a bit, maybe bidders would have swung for the fences.
