Ilove that quote, because I’m reminded every time, I enter the garage that we have had 11 Porsches in the last thirteen years. Angela has hung pictures of each one to remind me!

Well, it is hot in the Valley. But I’m talking about the Arizona region having the largest increase in new members of any region.

We are the beneficiary of snowbirds staying in the Valley year-round, and other members relocating from other states.

Here are the numbers for the Growth and Factored Growth Contest. Congratulations to these regions for making it halfway through the year on top! These numbers are amazing! Great work!

As of this writing we have 2502 total members. Primary and Co-members combined.

I don’t know how, but we will need to brainstorm to see if it is possible to offer more events to an already full September to May calendar. To even think about doing more means having more people willing to volunteer.

In previous monthly letters I have highlighted the dedicated volunteers our region is fortunate to have: Webmasters, Driving tour chair and assistants, DE and AX chairs and assistants, GP editors, Treasurer, P&P co-chairs, Monthly Meeting Chair, Membership Chair, Social Media Chair, Social Events Chair.

If we wonder often, the gift of knowledge will come - Arapaho

TheJuly HEAT was brutal and our little Beetle’s AC was forced into action yet again this year. Arizona is a wonderful place to call home but after the umpteenth continuous days of +100 degrees, enough.

We can now see why the driving tours slow down a tad especially if you drive an older Porsche.

Given the wicked heat AZPCA still held some great events during the month of July, We were treated to a great PnP breakfast at the Black Mountain Coffee Shop, thanks Frank & Co.

Rook weaved his magic for yet another epic drive to Prescott and a tasty lunch at the Palace.

The Club got invited to a Coffee and Cars event hosted by 2 young entrepreneurs in Carefree, they made a presentation to the members who attended the PnP and they made a very favorable impression.

The Club also held their 10th annual AZPCA night at the D’Backs, I’m sure fun was had by all.

August is shaping up to be another fun filled month of activities for our AZPCA members. We have our Membership meeting to look forward to at the Persian Room, always a favorite.

Rook has a great drive planned to Winslow with an overnight stay at La Posada and a visit to Meteor Crater. This months PnP sees us back at the Soul Café, this should be another culinary delight.

PCA AZ Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event Cancellation Policy

Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportuni ty to enjoy events.

Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:

Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly. If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!

Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.

For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.

Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.

While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.

How is a typical HPDE day structured?

A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.

The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.

The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.

What do you need to bring?

Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)

We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.

Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.

There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.

Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

AZPCA AUTOCROSS SEASON - 2023

The tentative autocross dates for the 2023-2024 AZPCA Region Autocross Season from October to April are on Saturday at AMP as follows:

• October 7, 2023, Saturday - AZ Motorsport Park Skidpad

• November 11, 2023, Saturday - AZ Motorsport Park Skidpad

About Autocross events:

Join us for our AZPCA autocross at Arizona Motorsports Park Skidpad. Location address is 15402 W. Camelback Rd, Litchfield Park, AZ 85340. Non-Porsches are welcome to participate. Multi lap format. Contact Kim Kemper for more information. $60 for the event - there is no on site registration. If you wish to have someone, who is not an entrant, over 18 years old and who is an immediate household member, as a passenger for a taste of autox please pre-register and pay the $15 fee. Drivers can invite guests only during pre-registration who must complete all waivers, but cannot be a passenger and no lunch is provided. The club will be serving a lunch to all pre-registered drivers and taste of autocross participants. Gates open at 7:00 am. First car out at 8:30 am. Rental helmets can be reserved during the online registration process. Sorry but no go-karts, Polaris type, formula or other exoskeleton vehicles permitted. AMP has a strict sound limit of 92 db and your vehicle must pass sound tech held immediately before the event (around 8:00) or have a valid AMP sound sticker and no changes to the car impacting sound have been made since. A link to the Porsche waiver will be sent to you via email, information on the AMP paper waiver will be provided in your event receipt and is available on site.

The Digital Age has arrived

HELLO Fellow members, The Digital membership card is here!

The opt-in for Digital Membership Cards will open to Primary Members starting Tuesday, July 25 at 8:00 PM ET.

Further details:

• A Digital Membership Card will be available only to members who select Digital Membership Card. A member will not be able to select both Digital and Mailed options.

• With either the mailed card or the digital card, the Primary Member’s choice will extend to the Family/Affiliate Member (as it currently does).

• Once opted in for a Digital Membership Card, the Primary Member will receive an email that includes:

o instructions to access their Digital Membership Card

o a digital version of the membership brochure

o instructions on how to request a PCA window decal

• A member who opts for a Digital Membership Card will not receive a mailed membership package or a mailed renewal reminder.

• Opting in for a Digital Membership Card will not affect the member’s Panorama subscription or any other communication preferences that aren’t mentioned above. If a member currently receives a mailed Panorama, they will continue to receive it.

• Digital Membership Cards are downloadable to Apple or Android smartphone Digital Wallet.

• Each Digital Membership Card will always be current with an individual’s membership. If the membership expires, the Digital Wallet will indicate they are not a current member.

• If the Primary Member does nothing, the account will continue with the traditional mailed membership card.

• The Digital Membership Card contains a QR code that will allow you to verify a person's membership status.

With this new feature, we look forward to allowing our members to carry this conve nient digital card with them everywhere in their smartphone’s Digital Wallet. This will also be a step forward in helping the Club become more sustainable and continuously adapt to the ever-changing digital landscape.

10th Annual Porsche & Pancakes at Anthem Country Club

On the heels of the nine past years’ very successful events, we will again return to the elegant Ironwood Grill at the Anthem Country Club for another signature event [with indoor [open and outdoor seating available]!

Forget the red zones in front of the main entrance, this is a Porsche event, and we’ll have the cars lined up around the circular drive and let them overflow into the parking lot once again. AZPCA Region publishes several emails each month to notify the members of the upcoming social and driving events and other pertinent Region business and activity information. These emails are known as eNews email blasts and will be identified by the PCA Banner as you see above.

It has come to the Region’s attention that several hundred members are not receiving the AZPCA Region’s eNews email blasts. This may be because the PCA National Office may not have your correct email address or there may be a technical problem with your email address. Or the member at one time elected to opt out of receiving the emails and would like to begin receiving them.

AZPCA Region would like to help the members in resolving this issue of you not receiving the eNews emails. Three Region Driving Tour to Mt Lemmon & Buffet Lunch at the Tanque Verde Ranch

Hello All:

Jeanne and I are planning a 3 Region Driving Tour to Mt Lemmon in Tucson on Saturday, Sept 30. The following will be the details for each of the 3 Regions:

AZ Mountain Region:

Drive to Tucson on Friday, stay overnight. Meet at the McDonalds at the corner of Tanque Verde and E. Catalina Hwy at 9:15am on Saturday, Sept 30. The Drivers’ meeNng will commence at 9:30am and we will start the drive up Mt Lemmon at 9:45am. We will all stop at the parking lot across the street from the Iron Door restaurant at the top of the mountain for photos and a rest stop break. We will then begin our descent from Mt Lemmon. We will proceed to the Tanque Verde Ranch restaurant for a group buffet lunch. The buffet lunch is $35 per person (tax and gratuity included) which we will collect on the AZ Region MSR site when you register for the event. Registra3on is required for this event

AZ Region:

Meet at the Chevron Gas StaNon on the southeast corner of Goldfield and US60 in Apache JuncNon at 7:00am on Saturday, Sept 30. The drivers’ meeNng will start at 7:00am and departure will be at 7:15am We will be taking the back way to Tucson on SR 79. We will have a rest stop break in Florence at the McDonalds. We should arrive at the McDonalds in Tucson at the corner of Tanque Verde and E Catalina Hwy at approximately 9:15am. The drivers’ meeNng will commence at 9:30am, and we will start the drive up Mt Lemmon at 9:45am. Southern Arizona Region (SAR):

Meet at the McDonalds at the corner of Tanque Verde and E. Catalina Hwy at 9:15am on Saturday, Sept 30. The drivers’ meeNng will commence at 9:30am, and we will start the drive up Mt Lemmon at 9:45am. We will all stop at the parking lot across the street from the Iron Door restaurant at the top of the mountain for photos and a rest stop break. We will then begin our descent from Mt Lemmon. We will proceed to the Tanque Verde Ranch restaurant for a group buffet lunch. The buffet lunch is $35 per person (tax and gratuity included) which we will collect on the AZ Region MSR site when you register for the event. Registra3on is required for this event.

Fall Colors Tour to Flagstaff

October 29-31, 2023

Note that this is a 3-day Sunday-Tuesday event.

After last year’s overnighter to Flagstaff, the consensus was that our stay at Little America was too short! So this year we are adding a day, with options on the second day planned to satisfy anyone’s interest in the historic and scenic sights in and around Flagstaff.

The fall colors in late October should be out in all their glory, through Oak Creek Canyon and around Northern Arizona Our drive on Sunday follows the Red Rock Scenic Byway to Sedona, where we will have lunch together and then take the beautiful drive through Oak Creek Canyon, where the leaves should be putting on their show!

On arrival in Flagstaff we will check into the Little America Hotel, Flagstaff’s only AAA approved Four Diamond hotel. “Set in 500 acres of Ponderosa pine forest, Little America Flagstaff combines inviting hospitality with the natural beauty of Northern Arizona.” A special group rate has been arranged, which you can take advantage of when you register for the event. Everyone will be on their own for the rest of the day, to explore the Flagstaff area or just hang out at the hotel. Chances are just about guaranteed that there will be an impromptu happy hour gathering sometime before dinner (on your own).

On Monday morning various destinations await, where you can join others to explore attractions in Flagstaff and Northern Arizona. We will organize groups to head out together to destinations including:

• Riordan Mansion (if you didn’t join the tour last year, this is a must-do!)

• Lowell Observatory

• Museum of Northern Arizona

• Flagstaff Area National Monuments: Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater, Wupatki

• Meteor Crater (if you missed this on the overnighter to La Posada in August)

After a day of sightseeing, we’ll gather for a casual dinner at Grimaldi's Pizzeria, a very short drive from Little America. Or if you wish, you can dine at the Silver Pine restaurant at the hotel, or go elsewhere.

On Tuesday after breakfast we will take the scenic drive to the Snowbowl. The fall colors should be dazzling as we head up toward Arizona’s tallest peak Your return home is on your own.

LeMans 100: A Century of the World’s Greatest Race

by Glen Smale, published 1 August 2023 by Motorbooks, Beverly, MA.

This book is very readable, but not a captivating read. Very well illustrated, it is not really a picture book, nor really a reference text. It is a compendium of reports on a century of 24-hour races at LeMans, France. The cover of the book itself is a wraparound photograph of the start of a late-60s event, and it comes in a red slipcase.

Full of interesting statistics, including the fact that the race with the highest percent finishing was race number 1 in 1923. The LeMans race is described as initially being very focused on showroom-production cars (shades of NASCAR !). It is also made clear that from the very first, or at least since 1924, ‘LeMans’ was as much a carnival as a race. From the first, the race was focused on consistency and reliability, with the major trophies awarded on the basis of multi-year results not just those of a single race. And initially, even standings at the end of a single event were not based on average speed or even miles covered, but degree of achievement against a standard postulated by the organizers.

Each individual story is interesting in its own right. They make it clear from the discussions of the changing rules for each race, that the ACO, the organizers of LeMans events, were very bureaucratic from the very first. There are stories of unexpected successes and shocking failures. Stories of terrible weather conditions and gorgeous days. There are pictures of ‘race cars’ that look barely driveable by modern standards and pictures of cars that almost look like jet fighters; they illustrate how much change can happen in 100 years.

LeMans 100 contains nine chapters, each covering a decade of racing, begin with a one-page summary of world conditions during that period. Each year’s race is presented in two pages with a concise but interesting description of the highlights of the event, a table of the top three finishers, and appropriate photographs., The text is in a readably large type font. There are several fold-outs with a ‘suitable for framing’ picture of a car in the race on one side and images of race posters on the other side, and some impressive two-page photo spreads.

Though there is a basic sameness to the race reports, the characters and conditions are all different each year – teams that are dominant one year can be mere ‘also-rans’ or even DNF the next. Impressive to this reviewer is the number of manufacturers who entered teams of up to six cars in the ‘40s and ‘50s, but are no longer in existence. Porsche of course, is prominent in the write ups from 1951 on, though the first picture of a Porsche doesn’t show up until the 1954 report. From the early ‘70s on, there is considerable discussion of Porsche cars and their development.

Anyone interested in the LeMans race, or even just Porsches should have a copy of this book. Not so much to read from cover to cover, but to peruse when inspiration, about a particular model Porsche, or a specific race year or decade, hits. It will serve you well as a conversation starting display piece on your coffee table or as something for ‘throne room’ reading.

LeMans 100 has 240, 9x11 inch heavyweight semi-gloss pages, with 250 images. It has an impressive index which takes five, four column pages, despite being in much smaller type than the basic text. By the time you are reading this it should be available for $75 from your favorite bookseller or from Quartoknows.com

Baby you can drive my Car

Two magic days driving manufacturers’ latest offerings came and went again last month. And your humble scribe is here to report back on a new year and a new slew of vehicles.

This is an annual event, for which major thanks go to the Rocky Mountain Automotive Press Assn, for arranging everything. And the vehicle manufacturer reps, for bringing the cars.

A few top-of-mind observations. First, the annual spoiler alert; no Porsche participation, no Audi participation, no BMW participation. Audi and BMW have participated in the past. But Porsche has never shown, for at least the last 10 years that I’ve gone. I have no idea why. They’re all missing out.

As for the manufacturer reps, riding shotgun, or in the back seat, I must say, this year’s crop was extremely knowledgeable, and really good company. Forthcoming on tech, and product planning, and industry observations. It hasn’t always been like that. And I didn’t notice even one cringe, as we blasted through the twisties.

Which brings up the route. Oh, we’ve been in the mountains before. But this year was some of the best of the best. Up to the Peak to Peak Highway, back down for lunch in Lyons, up to Estes Park, into Rocky Mountain National Park, over Trail Ridge Road, down and through to Winter Park for the night. The following day were drives around the surrounding roads. Then up and over Berthoud Pass (11,300 ft elevation) and back down. A quick hop on I 70 to Georgetown and up over Guanella Pass. Then back down, a left onto 285 and back to our base in Golden.

We saw elk, we saw moose, we saw deer, we saw pronghorn sheep, we saw tundra, we saw snow, we saw rain, we saw sun, we saw curves, we saw straights.

Oh yeah, the cars. Of course there were EVs, and there were hybrids, and there were SUVs, and there were trucks. I couldn’t find the time to get into everything. But I did spend seat-time in two, yes, two manual transmission fun machines. The Toyota Corolla GR. And the Acura Integra Type S.

Did I enjoy them? Is Trail Ridge Road the highest road in North America that goes somewhere? The GR can’t escape its econobox roots. But 300 hp from a 1.6-liter three cylinder mill, driving all four wheels, can get your attention. Hey, Subaru, this really is a street rally car for today. Linear punch into the stomach, a nice, tight ride, no-thought steering. If you’re interested, I’d order one today. They won’t last.

Nor will the Integra. A year ago, I drove the A-Spec, and I found it a buzz-box, sadly lacking in oomph. No longer. The exterior’s more pumped up, the interior’s more luxe, the power’s more … more. And, on the overrun, the engine gives you a “pop pop pop” song that’s almost worth the price of admission, in and of itself.

Trends this year. The Honda Accord hybrid had paddle shifters that didn’t actually shift the vehicle at all. What they did was control the degree of regenerative braking, when you lifted. You went from virtually none to, well, a lot. Paddle on the left for more, paddle on the right for less.

Full-on, I found this remarkably useful in the twisties. But I couldn’t help wondering, does it affect fuel economy? Honda’s rep said hardly. Does it save on wear and tear on brake pads? Yes. Do brake lights come on, when in full regenerative mode? I forgot to ask. But I did hum Fleetwood Mac’s “You Can Go Your Own Way.”

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 63 S 4matic+SUV won the longest model name contest. And, with a reported 603 hp and 627 ft-lbs of torque, with the help of a 48-volt hybrid assist, leading to a reported 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds, at an MSRP north of $160K, it also won the most outrageous vehicle award, at least from me.

The Benz also featured the most over-the-top dash. The usual digital instrument cluster, flanked by the largest infotainment system maybe in existence. I mean, in nav mode it looks like you unfolded a complete digital, touch-sensitive Hagstrom map. And then, to its right, there’s another digital panel, just for the front-seat passenger. And it all kinda flows up, almost into the straight-ahead sight-line, giving a slightly truncated view forward. A true Godzilla vehicle.

What else? The new Prius Prime looks sensational. And drives like a good car, not a Mobil Economy Run entrant. God bless the natural induction of the Lexus IS 500. And the massaging rear seat in the Genesis G90.

AZPCA REGION AUTOCROSS MEMBERS BEING COOL

OnJune 4, 2023, the Arizona Mountain Region (AMR) held their Inaugural Autocross Event at the Findlay Toyota Event Center located in Prescott Valley. AMR asked the AZPCA Region to help with the logistics and the use of the Region’s autocross support equipment. The AZPCA Region obliged by Ken M transporting the cache of cones, timing, and other support related equipment up to Prescott Valley. AMR Member, Bob F., chaired the event with the collaboration of AZPCA Autocross Co-Chair, Kim K.

The early morning temps were in the upper 50s and lower 60s and warmed up to the upper 70s and lower 80s by the afternoon. The day started off mostly sunny which turned to afternoon showers just after the conclusion of the event. Fortunately, there was no rain during the event.

There were thirty-six drivers in attendance, and they enjoyed the cool seasonable Prescott Valley Area weather. The course was a very twisty closed loop course that ran clockwise with a couple of slaloms and several tight turns. The course also had a very short showcase type straight-a-way and the start finish lines were placed in the showcase section.

There were two run groups with eighteen drivers each. Each run group ran in both the morning and afternoon sessions and there was an AMR provided lunch for the drivers.

Several AZPCA Region autocross regulars and Hotshoes (Really Fast Drivers) also attended the inaugural event. Robert and Marc T. (Father and Son) ran Robert’s Group “X” German make car and Kim K., Scott O., Brian M., Ealing J., Jonathan and Mrs. B (Morgan – Jonathan’s wife) drove their Group “P” cars. A great majority of the AMR drivers were first time autocrossers.

There were eighteen “Cone Kills” for this event and a majority of the “Cone Mashers” were by AZPCA Region members. That means the AMR members were very kind to the AZPCA Region cones.

The “Top Cone Killer Guy” was AZPCA Region Scott O in his super zoomy race prepared Porsche GT4 with a total of Four Kills but, the physical evidence (cone marks on his vehicle) indicates that there may have been five cone kills. Scott relates that one of the cone marks appeared on his car from nowhere prior to the start of the event, and the Timing and Scoring Staff believed that the mysterious cone mark may have been from meeting up with a traffic cone from a highway construction zone on the trip up to the event. As the benefit of the doubt goes to the competitor, he was not assessed a fifth cone penalty.

The” Top Time of Day” was 59.490, driven by AZPCA Region Jonathan B., driving his Porsche Carrera followed by AZPCA Region Ealing J. in his Porsche Carrera, with a 60.108 second run. Both drivers achieved their best run on their last lap in the afternoon session. AZPCA Region Autocross Chairperson, Kim K., driving his Porsche GT4, drove a third best run of 62.581 seconds that he achieved on his last lap in the afternoon session.

AMR President, Lorraine F., was the fastest “Lady Autocross Driver” for the event with her best being 68.736 seconds

unfortunately, she mashed a cone, so she will have to settle for a 69.955 second clean run. Her best clean run was the fifth best of all the AMR drivers.

The fastest AZPCA Region Lady Driver was Mrs. B. (Morgan), driving the family Carrera and her best laptime was 75.573 seconds that she drove on her last lap in the afternoon session.

The consensus among the AMR drivers is they had more fun than anyone could have ever imagined. The AMR members are hoping that there will be future AMR autocross events.

The Arizona Mountain Region of the Porsche Club of America (PCA) recently held its first-ever Autocross event. Established in 2018, the Arizona Mountain Region of PCA has long intended to create an autocross event that would showcase the performance and precision of Porsche vehicles with a challenging closed course to enhance driving skills.

The Arizona Region of the PCA provided valuable support, resulting in a highly successful gathering. Both clubs contributed volunteers, equipment, and resources, ensuring the smooth execution of various aspects such as registration, course setup, timing, and safety supervision. With the assistance of experienced instructors from both clubs, the many volunteers ensured a safe, informative, and competitive environment for all participants. Everyone is grateful to Phil Mullen and Lorraine Friedman from the Arizona Mountain Region, and Kim Kemper and Ken Mitchell from the Arizona Region for making this event happen.

Everyone had a great day of driving. As we parked and waited to get going, there were a few conversations about taking it easy. The carefully designed Autocross course proved to be mentally challenging. As a novice participant, I was a bit baffled during the walkthrough and a little apprehensive at first. However, only the first run was slow and careful. Any paddock talk among novices about taking it easy was quickly forgotten after that. I blame my 911. It is supremely responsive and fun to drive!

Beyond the on-course action, this Autocross event also served as a platform for building connections among members of the PCA clubs and sharing their passion for Porsche.

Looking ahead as the Arizona Mountain Region of the Porsche Club of America continues to organize future events, the inaugural Autocross event marks an exciting chapter for Porsche club members in Northern Arizona. The success of this inaugural Autocross event will also serve as a solid foundation for further thrilling Porsche experiences.

Tech Tips Your First Driver’s Education

Every week or so I am asked a question by a customer or a friend, “Why would you drive a DE?” Typically this turns into a long conversation that outlines the benefits of a well-organized driver’s education.

As we know, Porsche cars are direct descendents of racecars. Even the latest Porsche GT3 RSR uses an engine that is based on the original flat six design. Whether you have a 356 or the newest Boxster, you can learn a lot about your car and yourself by participating in a PCA DE.

Driving on a local racetrack with the PCA will let you explore your Porsche at your own speed. Driver education is not racing. It is not timed and everyone drives at a speed they are comfortable with. You will not be alone while you are on the track. The PCA supplies highly qualified and experienced instructors to help from the moment you put on your helmet to the last cool down lap of the day.

In addition to having a ton of fun, your first DE will help you become a better driver on the street. You will get to know the basic limits of your Porsche and I will bet you will be very surprised with what a

street Porsche can do. The biggest skill that translates to driving on the street is “looking down the road,” which means you are not as concentrated on the 15 feet in front of your bumper but looking way ahead to spot potential trouble. I have had many past DE students tell me that they use this skill every time they drive a car.

Participating in your first DE can be intimidating. Here are some helpful hints to get you ready for your first DE. The most important first step is to have a Porsche car that is mechanically sound. You don’t want to be worrying about whether

your car is going to make it through the first lap on the track. Any Porsche shop that advertises with the PCA will be more than happy to complete a Driver’s Education Tech Form (http://az.pca.org/ application/themes/azpca/pdf/AZPCA_DE_TechForm.pdf), which will cover the basic mechanical systems of your Porsche. The great thing about this service is that it is free.

Once you have your Porsche up to snuff, the next thing is getting yourself prepared for the event. I like to get to the track early. This alleviates any pressure that comes with arriving late. Once you arrive at the track you will want to check in, register, and then go through a quick check of your car. Then you will go to a drivers meeting where you will be paired up with a PCA instructor. After the meeting, you will go though an awesome classroom session where you will learn the basics of driving on the track.

Then the fun really begins! You and your PCA instructor will get in line, “grid up” and enter the track, and complete your first session. Depending on the event, you will have up to 6 sessions on the track with each session helping you learn more and more about how to drive your Porsche.

Ifwe’re taking the market’s temperature, June would appear hot as we achieved 2023 highs in our dollar volume and unit volume, thanks to $20m in sales and nine new auction records at Broad Arrow Auction’s 75th Anniversary Porsche sale held in Atlanta mid-month. But take out this once-every-five-year auction event, and the market looks as cool as it did in May, with a 70% sell-through rate and just over $30m in sales.

Highlights from the 75th Anniversary sale were plenty, but one real standout was the sale of a 1999 996 Coupe for $1.2m. This car wasn’t just any 996 for that kind of money, but the 996 Classic Club Coupe project dreamed up by the Porsche Club of America and Porsche’s Sonderwunsch department. Built to showcase what Porsche’s “Special Wishes” program is capable of, the Classic Club Coupe features a GT3 engine and drivetrain, a custom interior, and an exterior designed with nods to the 911 Carrera 2.7 RS and Carrera GT. And the buyer of this world record 996? None other than Jerry Seinfeld.

We also saw this auction buck the trend of historic Porsche race cars failing to sell this year, with a 1964 904 Carrera GTS selling for $2,535,000 and a 1984 962 in Coke-Cola livery with both 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring history selling for $1,270,000. One notable no-sale, however, was a 1967 910 that failed to sell at a final bid of $2,300,000. $200,000 short of the recent 910 sale on Bring a Trailer.

The Carrera GT market continued to soften as two examples crossed the block this month. The first, a 2005 example with 16,765 miles, sold for just over $1m at $1,028,000, about $200k shy of where comps with similar mileage were not too long ago. And the second, a 2004 example finished in Speedster Blue by Porsche Classic partner Porsche North Houston sold for $1,462,500. An impressive number, but considering rare colors were all $2m cars this time last year, reasonably light.

Also showing signs of softening for the second month in a row is the 992 GT3 market. Save for the one example that sold at the Broad Arrow sale for $300,000, all others continued to slide with an average selling price of $255,000 and a market low of $177,250. We also saw the first 2023 992 GT3 RS come up for auction, failing to sell at a high bid of $415,000. GT4 RS’ also continued its downward trend, with one example failing to sell at a high bid of $230,000 and the other finding a home at $245,000.

On the classic side of the market, 356s showed mixed results with a 64% sell-through rate compared to last month’s 88%, but those that did sell kept the momentum going price-wise as they continued to trend up. Notable 356 auctions this month include a 1964 356 SC Cabriolet that sold for $215,600 and a 1958 356A Sunroof Coupe built by Rod Emory that failed to sell at an eye-watering $699,356.

The modern classics, especially the 993 market, were the biggest mover in June, with a 993 Turbo S selling for an above-average price of $560,000 and your standard 993 coupes averaging $100,000. We also saw a new five-year record for 993 Turbos, with a 645-mile example selling for $486,000 on Bring a Trailer. With no headlining auctions on the calendar for July, it will be interesting to see if the market stays consistent at its ~70% sell-through rate and $30m in sales before we head into the summer heat of August with Pebble Beach where all major auction houses will be bringing out the big guns. We’ll see our first 911 reimagined by Singer we’ve seen in a while, crossing the block at RM Sothebys and a 1966 906 at Bonhams.
