THEATRE AT ITS BEST! MARCH – NOVEMBER 2018

A SPARKLING PROGRAMME

Following extensive restoration work to the outside of the building at the end of last year, the Grand Opera House is now looking newly bright, colourful and sparkling – a tangible testimony to the continuing investment in this iconic Northern Ireland building by the Grand Opera House Trust. A non-profit-making charity, the Trust is committed to keeping the landmark heritage building in excellent condition for future generations, and providing a first-class programme of continuing appeal to the widest range of cultural and entertainment tastes. The news of an even more ambitious major project to conserve and restore the wonderful interior of the Grand Opera House is detailed later in this brochure. Within the forthcoming season of top musicals, plays, comedy, dance and opera, there is a strong emphasis on quality, popular work for families, children and young people: a particularly important element, given the Grand Opera House Trust’s mission for the future of theatre and theatregoing in Northern Ireland. The large-scale musical Shrek will have wide family appeal, as will adaptations of David Walliams’ entertaining books for children, Gangsta Granny and Awful Auntie. The Summer Youth Production, featuring local

young people in large numbers, will be the enchanting and ever-popular The Wizard of Oz. At the beginning of the school summer holidays, following last year’s sell-out success, the Grand Opera House’s second Family Festival will be taking place. And of appeal to young adults is The Kite Runner, an adaptation of the best-selling novel and BAFTAnominated movie, a gripping emotional drama: overall, a glittering contemporary season within a magnificent heritage building. We look forward to welcoming you many times throughout the year to Northern Ireland’s Premier Theatre. Ian Wilson Chief Executive Grand Opera House

A THEATRE FOR ALL It’s a great pleasure to welcome another inspirational season of theatre and entertainment at the Grand Opera House. As principal funder, it’s important to the Arts Council that our investment ensures that everyone, from all backgrounds and circumstances, is able to access all the great art and entertainment that’s provided by this incomparable Theatre. The Grand Opera House offers the full range of excellent dramatic arts to the widest possible audiences, with stunning shows like Titanic The Musical, the West End production of The Kite Runner, Northern Ireland Opera’s Rigoletto, Northern Ballet’s Jane Eyre, and family shows such as Peppa Pig and Gangsta Granny, all supported by National Lottery funding for the arts.

300,000 PEOPLE

Complementing the performances, a tremendous amount of largely unsung work also goes on behind the scenes, with the outreach team working hard to create wider opportunities for people to engage with the Theatre, through dedicated education and access programmes and schools and community engagement initiatives. This commitment to providing ‘Theatre for All’ is at the heart of why the Grand Opera House occupies a special place in Northern Ireland’s arts and cultural scene. Grand Opera House restoration takes centre stage thanks to National Lottery support Northern Ireland’s iconic Grand Opera House has received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards an extensive project that will see the restoration of its matchless auditorium, together with the Theatre’s front of house areas. The Grand Opera House Trust has been given a grant of £242,700 to develop its restoration and development plans, which will be then assessed by the Heritage Lottery Fund for a further £4,560,000 award. The restoration and development project, which will cost a total of £11 million, is due to begin in January 2020 ahead of the Theatre’s 125th anniversary later that year. The interior of the Theatre was last restored in 1980 when the Grand Opera House reopened after it was saved from demolition. As well as extensive restoration works in the original building, which opened on 23 December 1895, a

permanent visitor exhibition will be created to showcase the colourful history of Northern Ireland’s Premier Theatre. There are very few theatres in the UK and Ireland that can match the opulence of the Grand Opera House’s auditorium. Designed by Frank Matcham, the most prolific theatre architect of the Victorian era, the restoration of the auditorium and public spaces represents a once-in-ageneration opportunity to return the auditorium to its former grandeur and acknowledges the Grand Opera House’s vibrant contribution to Northern Ireland’s cultural life, and to the economy of Belfast. Thanks to National Lottery players, the funding will help protect, conserve and enhance the heritage of the Grand Opera House and share its unique and colourful history through improved community and visitor engagement. MONDAY 12 – SATURDAY 17 MARCH ART is a phenomenon and one of the most successful plays ever. Having opened in 1996, it took both the West End and Broadway by storm, won Olivier, Tony, Molière and every other major theatre award, and has been packing in audiences worldwide for more than twenty years. When Serge spends an extortionate amount of money on an all-white modernist painting, his close friends Marc and Yvan are baffled. But do their violent reactions to this provocative canvas mirror more dangerous antagonisms towards each other? Yasmina Reza’s dazzling study of friendship, prejudice and tolerance is a masterpiece.

The all-star cast features Nigel Havers (The Charmer, Don’t Wait Up, Downton Abbey) Denis Lawson (Bleak House, Local Hero, New Tricks) and Stephen Tompkinson (Drop the Dead Donkey, Ballykissangel, Wild at Heart, DCI Banks, Brassed Off).
