Spring/Summer 2019

Entertainment for Everyone! When it opened in 1895, the Grand Opera House set out to show that theatre and entertainment were not just for the elite, but for everybody. Over a century later this is still what the Grand Opera House - by now an iconic historic theatre - is proud to be about. The production of Ghost the Musical promises romance and dazzling staging; there will be moves guaranteed to take your breath away in high-energy Saturday Night Fever; and Broadway style will crackle in every note and step of Cabaret. Musical thrills for children (and their parents and family!) come in the form of the comedy-packed Madagascar, and the magical tale of Annie. There’s a rare chance to see one of the most moving plays of the twentieth century, A Taste of Honey, thanks to a visit by the National Theatre as part of a nine-week tour to selected venues. Equally special is Northern Ballet Theatre’s Victoria, beautifully bringing to life the passion and tragedy of the Queen and doomed Prince Albert. The biggest youth theatre event of the calendar is the Grand Opera House Trust’s Summer Youth Production, and this year there will be not one, but two: a spectacular staging of Miss Saigon School Edition; and in jaunty comic mode, Bugsy Malone. Over 300,000 people visited the Grand Opera House in 2018. It is the broad appeal of a quality programme like this which attracts such high numbers of people from all sections of the community, fully justifying the Grand Opera House's claim to be Northern Ireland’s Premier Theatre, and demonstrating the remarkable value it returns for its public funding, via the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. Ian Wilson Chief Executive

THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL SHOWS The Arts Council, as the Grand Opera House’s principal funder, is delighted to support this new season’s programme. This is Theatre for All, with the opportunity to enjoy some of the most soughtafter local and international shows. Growing numbers of young people are getting actively involved with the Theatre through, for instance, the Creative Learning Programme and the Summer Youth Productions, and the Grand Opera House continues to support local artists and arts organisations as well as the development of new writing and performing talent.

The Grand Opera House is one such theatre, and over the years, thanks to this arrangement, audiences have enjoyed memorable visits from some of the UK’s leading companies. One of the many highlights of this season will undoubtedly be the opportunity to see the new touring productions of the National Theatre’s Macbeth, Northern Ballet’s Victoria and Scottish Opera’s The Magic Flute. Roisin McDonough Chief Executive Arts Council of Northern Ireland

A cross-border touring programme jointly funded by the UK Arts Councils enables several of the very best large-scale UK productions to tour to designated theatres across the UK.

Stan Laurel backstage at the Grand Opera House in 1952

Raiders of the Lost Archives As the Grand Opera House prepares for next year’s restoration and development work ahead of its 125th birthday in December 2020, staff and researchers have been drawing together the incredible history of Northern Ireland’s most historic and iconic theatre. Libraries and archives have been scoured, and newspapers and programmes poured over to uncover the stories and anecdotes that make up the Theatre’s rich and fascinating history. Many of these stories centre on the famous names who have graced the Grand Opera House stage: audiences queuing round the block to see Gracie Fields in 1933; Stan Laurel celebrating his 62nd birthday on stage in 1952; Judi Dench directing Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thomson in 1989. Others reflect the mixed fortunes of the building itself: flooded in 1901 (when a rowing boat was used to bring food to actors trapped in the Theatre), damaged by fire in 1930, saved at the 11th hour from demolition in 1974, and suffered bomb damage in 1991 and 1993.

If you have a story to tell about your Grand Opera House please let us know by emailing memories@goh.co.uk. Maybe you remember being taken to see the circus in the 1930s, or were in the audience on the night that General Eisenhower and Field Marshall Montgomery attended a performance of This is the Army in 1945. Were you lucky enough to witness Luciano Pavarotti’s UK debut at the Grand Opera House in 1963, or May McFettridge’s first pantomime performance in 1989?

Kenneth Branagh and Steve Coogan presenting the BAFTAs from the Grand Opera House in 1994

MARIE JONES’ WORK COMES HOME TO THE GRAND OPERA HOUSE!

MONDAY 15 – SATURDAY 20 APRIL A small village in rural Ireland is turned upside down when a major Hollywood film studio descends to make a historical blockbuster on location. The story is told through the eyes of Charlie Conlon and Jake Quinn, employed as extras along with numerous other locals. As cultures clash, it becomes clear that Tinseltown’s romanticised dream of Ireland is a long, long way from reality. Just two talented actors brilliantly bring to life a multitude of extraordinary characters, ranging from the spoilt American starlet to the English director and the village old timer. Often hysterically funny, thought-provoking and witty, this wonderful comedy has won numerous awards including both the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best New Comedy, as well as three Tony nominations on Broadway. Stones in his Pockets ran for four years in the West End and has delighted audiences around the world.

One of the UK’s greatest directors of comedy, Lindsay Posner’s many acclaimed productions include Noises Off at The Old Vic, and Abigail’s Party, Relatively Speaking and Hay Fever in the West End.

WEDNESDAY 1 – SATURDAY 4 MAY Director James Huish makes his return to the Grand Opera House after his sell-out production of Les Miserablès School Edition in 2016 with this fabulous Stephen Sondheim musical comedy. ‘A riot from start to finish’ The Scotsman

THURSDAY 27 – SATURDAY 29 JUNE Sir Thomas Allen returns to Scottish Opera to revive his five-star production of Mozart’s most inventive opera. Set in a spectacular world inspired by the Victorian futurism of HG Wells and Jules Verne, this enthralling Magic Flute perfectly balances the opera’s beguiling mix of comedy, fantasy and pantomime with a profound story of the search for wisdom, love and truth. A handsome prince, a damsel in distress, sorcerers, priests and a bumbling bird catcher – all are given life in Mozart’s sublime blend of lyrical love duets, folk-like ditties and the explosive coloratura of the Queen of the Night arias. The international cast includes tenor

Peter Gijsbertsen, baritone James Cleverton, name-to-watch Julia Sitkovetsky and Gemma Summerfield, First Prize winner at the 2015 Kathleen Ferrier Awards. Scottish Opera favourite Tobias Ringborg conducts.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND TUESDAY 3 – SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER An uplifting story of hope, fortitude and family. After its stunning debut in Belfast in 2017, Angela’s Ashes returns in this major musical adaptation of Frank McCourt’s memoir. The story is brought to life in this emotional telling of a childhood in Limerick and beyond, featuring unforgettable songs and melodies, told with a rare lyricism and a warm inimitable sense of humour. JOHANN STRAUSS

KING OF THE WALTZ

REVENGE IS A DISH BEST SERVED COLD

TUESDAY 17 – SATURDAY 21 SEPTEMBER Falke wakes up on a bench with a killer hangover, dressed as a bat. His ‘good friend’ Eisenstein thought it would be hilarious to abandon him here after partying the night before, leaving him with a long walk of shame to get home. It’s been a long time coming but tonight’s the night for Falke’s revenge at the most glamorous night of the season...what could possibly go wrong? Die Fledermaus or The Bat is the jewel in the crown of the real King of the Waltz: Johann Strauss. The tunes stay with you forever. The humour is wicked. The atmosphere indulgent.

It is a farce about men taking liberties, women taking control, and the dangers of dressing up as a bat. Sung in English.
