GOGUIDE is a local online magazine for the West Lothian area. We try to be less focused on local ‘news’ and more a targetted on, ‘what’s on’ or ‘happening’ in the local area. We do try to have a pretty modern approach to GoGuide content and eventually hope to produce articles on subjects outside our usual stuff such as Clubbing, Theatre, Internet, Sport etc.. With the vast majority of our content sourced from local contributors we are always on the lookout for new people to join us and help provide input to this content hungry mag so if you’re keen on writing stuff and getting it published in the mag feel free to drop us a message at content@goguidemagazine.co.uk

WWW.BATHGATEMUSICFESTIVAL.COM Bathgate Music Festival kicks off for its seventh year on the 4th September for a 4 day music extravaganza, the biggest we have in our tiny backwater community. Having been heavily involved in starting the very first Bathgate Music Festival, back in 2008, it started life as a marvellous 7 days of music across multiple venues and features no less than 30+ 100% local bands/solo artists performing in events across Bathgate. Putting on a festival like this takes massive amounts of organisation and time and with so many people involved there are a lot of ‘visions’ as to what the festival should ultimately be about. I personally wasn’t too impressed with the future plans Page 4
for the festival and its heavy leaning towards ‘council’ owned and operated venues, we actually had to cancel bookings with a lot of local bands to accommodate a ‘council venue nights only’ policy, so I decided to step away from the event after the first year. Looking back to then and comparing it to now, yeh sure the festival has shrunk a good bit from then, now down to just 3 days + Party in the Park, which I’m pretty sure is an independent event from the main festival? It also seems that the heart of a local festival, which for me is our amazing local artists, has been replaced by journeymen from wherever the current organisers can get them, with local acts dwindling more each year and battle of the band’s competitions that get won by semi-pro acts from Glasgow…??? Hey, Ok... it has its problems, maybe doesn’t float everyone’s boat? But we should ALL remember that it’s our ONLY real music

festival, and hell yeh….we should appreciate the massive efforts that the organising team make and DEFINITELY get behind it right? Let’s try to make it as much of a success as we can? So come on, get yourself out there and cram these venues to the rafters and show your support for what is a pretty AWESOME thing to have in your community. So to this year and the festival 2014 program features the ‘fast becoming the norm’ blend of school brass band type offerings, to pub/ club bands, 14 years old solo artists, covers/ tribute bands and the odd original/local band just thrown in for good measure. Strangely this year the crew have pulled off a coup in the form of The La Fontaines headlining the Steelyard on Sat 6th. (not sure the organisers are up there with this one, family setting and almost all their stuff on iTunes have the ‘Explicit Lyrics’ tag… ???? Defo gonna make this one). From all the stuff we’ve managed to drag together the festival line-up on a day to day basis (Which is the best way isn’t it?) is? Mr Suit GoGuide Magazine Contributor

SHED OF THE YEAR Having covered it last year we were surprised at just how big this thing is becoming and with the 2014 competition pulling in a record breaking 2,000 entries and 20,000 people voting for their winner, it looks like the public likes it just as much as we do. So much so that it has even been picked up for a series of programs by Channel 4. The 2014 Shed of the Year was revealed for the first time by George Clarke on Channel 4’s Amazing Spaces, after a series of episodes

where the top sheds in the various categories were whittled down to a winner, with the eventual overall winner of the nervewracking competition walking away with the fast becoming ‘illustrious’ title along with £1,000 courtesy of sponsors Cuprinol, £100 of Cuprinol products, winner’s plaque and a giant crown for the shed. George Clarke says: “The nation’s love for transforming their garden shed to an extension of the home is really trending right now. The TV show highlighted some of the most creative, beautiful and unusual sheds in the country, as well as allowing me to meet incredible people who are so enthusiastic about what they do.”

The Eco category features a garden shed with an allotment built on the roof, a shed made out of 5000 wine bottles, an egg shaped studio and a glass shed built over a pond, which cost just £250.

the Allotment Roof shed is used to grow an array of vegetables. Ecofriendly lights, powered by a solar panel, are used to light the inside.
PUB SHED WINNER

The Pub category bring sheds with strange and unique artefacts, a tropical hideaway constructed from wood and finished with bamboo and a shed pub built as a tribute to a late father and brother.

Owned by Mark Appleton from St Helens, Merseyside The Appleton Arms was built as a tribute to Mark’s late father and brother contains a traditional hand-made wooden bar, a snug area, real pub signage, a dart board and a wood burning stove.
GARDEN OFFICE SHED WINNER From modern standard features like electric and lighting, heated flooring and energy efficient double glazing to the more historic exposed oak beams and thatched roofs, bunk beds and VW camper bench seat, there’s definitely something for everyone.
The Appleton Arms
Winner of the Garden Office category was The Little Thatch
Designed and built by Jamie Dix from Bedford in 2010, the picturesque shed has a beautiful thatched roof, bunk beds for the children and exposed oak beams.
CABIN / SUMMERHOUSE SHED WINNER The Summerhouse/Cabin group throws up a replica 18th century US frontier cabin, a Gothic grotto decorated with 50,000 seashells, and a scaled down Elizabethan lodge.

The My Caribbean Retreat shed houses a day bed, stereo, small mementos from trips away and Moroccan tapestry cushions. The roof is lined with pink and purple folded voile and embroidered with butterflies.

LIFE(STYLE)FEATURE UNIQUE SHED WINNER The Unique shed category featured a 21ft-wide replica of a tea pot, a Titanic museum and a cinema shed with over 3000 films.
Winner of the Unique category was Reelwood
Reelwood is a shed-cinema made with exact dimensions for the installed surround sound system. It also contains a full film collection, movie memorabilia and a cinematic screen.
NORMAL SHED WINNER The ‘Normal’ sheds prove to be anything but, with one of the smallest discos in the world up against a Dad’s Army themed shed complete with air raid siren, as well as a 1970s amusement park in a shed with a 12-foot working Ferris wheel outside.
Reelwood
Winner of the Normal category was: Disco Shed
Disco Shed, built by DJ’s Paddy Bickerton and Aidan Larkin, both aged 35 from The Cotswolds, is a fully mobile shed that travels the country to play at music festivals. It contains DJ decks, lights, a smoke machine, giant rooftop visuals, disco ball and a record sleeve lined roof.
WORKSHOP/STUDIO SHED WINNER In the Workshop category, a 1930s garage, complete with classic car restorations, battles it out with a graffiti artist’s shed with its own gorilla, an extraordinary bird box production line, and the smallest shed in the whole competition: a music venue with room for just one performer and one audience member.

The ‘Stencil Shed’ was created to house the owners art work. It features a smiley face optical illusion, a cider bar, as well as a full sized gorilla that guards the entrance.
TARDIS SHED WINNER The Tardis category concentrated on the smallest of sheds based on the iconic police box from the BBC show ‘Dr Who’

uilt from scratch using recycled materials, the Allotment Roof shed is used to grow an array of vegetables. Eco-friendly lights, powered by a solar panel, are used to light the inside where Joel spends hours painting and making music in his specially designed studio. When winter sets in, a wood burner keeps the fire alive and heats the shed without the need of a gas supply or radiator – proving its eco-friendly credentials.
When asked about his winning shed, Joel said: “Sheds are no longer just places for men to escape to, they are transforming the way people live their lives and subsequently how they see themselves. Women should drink about 1.6 litres of fluid a day (approx. Eight glasses) while a man should have around 2.0 litres (approx. Ten glasses).
How do I look? Now that you have everything to make you feel good you’re probably hoping that you look good as well, whether you’re a man or a woman we all like to think we’re at our best. We’d probably need a cupboard as well as some desk drawers to keep our female readers happy (sorry) but there are a few essential items that go a long way to helping you looking good. 25 chicken wings Marinade: 5 spring onions, finely sliced 5 tbsp honey 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 red chilli, sliced 1-2 cm piece of ginger, grated 4-5 sprigs of thyme, leaves picked
1 tbsp Vegetable oil 1 Large onion, chopped 100g Streaky bacon, chopped 1 tbsp Plain flour 600ml Fish stock, made from 1 fish sto A pinch of Mace A pinch of Cayenne pepper 300ml milk 320g Pack fish pie mix (salmon, haddo and smoked haddock) 250g Pack cooked mixed shellfish 225g new potatoes, halved 4 tbsp single cream Small bunch parsley, chopped Crusty bread to serve

Throw all the marinade ingredients into a large bowl making a sticky sauce mix.
Grab the largest pot you have and stick cook for around 10 mins or until your on for another couple of mins.
Prep time: 15 mins + 24hr marinade - Cook time: 45 mins (Serves: 6-8)
Ingredients
Using a large flat casserole/baking dish lay the wings in one even layer pour the marinade over all the chicken pieces and cover with clingfilm. Clear a shelf in the fridge and put the dish in to marinate for at least overnight but 24 hours is best. If it’s a nice day toss the chicken on the barbecue for 15–20 minutes, remembering to turn a lot until the skin is dark and crispy and the juices run clear when you pierce them with a skewer. If cooking inside heat a griddle pan until hot and cook until golden, finish them in the oven at 180C/gas 4 for at least 10–15 minutes to make sure that the chicken is completely cooked.

I
n this month’s issue I’m going to be looking at what is probably the single toughest upper body exercise, the muscle up. This exercise will have you utilising your entire upper body in a simply awesome feat of strength. I will also be going through a clear line of progression to build your strength, Core control and to prepare your body for learning this very advanced exercise. First of all what is the muscle up? Originating from gymnastic rings competition the muscle up involves a high chin up where you bring your chest to over the bar/rings, bring your hands on top of the bar and then press your

body vertically above the bar. The movement requires huge back strength and core control in the first part of the movement and then the load is exchanged to the front of the torso and your chest and shoulders make the final press which is essentially a dip.
This movement was then adapted for crossfit competitions by adding a form of gymnastic kip technique, utilising a hip bump to gain momentum over the bar in order to complete more repetitions in a specified time frame. It may be worth noting that there is a difference between the gymnastic kip and the crossfit kipping muscle up although both of these movements take more technical skill in learning it takes much less strength than its gymnastic ancestor the strict ring muscle up. Now onto the progressions, you will notice each stage has a chest exercise a back exercise and a core exercise, with the

exception of the last progression all you will need is a pullup bar and a place to do chest dips. The stated rep ranges are set to let you know when to try moving on to the next progression. If you aren’t getting the set reps then do as many as you can and aim to do more each workout, Don’t be afraid to take a step back and see how you find the older stages as you progress and see if you can do more reps.
Once you have gone through all the progressions its time to move on to the full muscle up. I would recommend first learning the kipping style as a transition into the strict muscle up and make sure you have a shot of trying it on rings as well as bars. An important move to practice when trying to achieve the muscle up is to find a bar about chest height (probably at a local park) or stand on a bench at your gym and practice jumping and pulling yourself up to a dip this will help you learn the changeover between the pulling and the pushing parts of the full skill.

Rather than a rip roaring funfest Tammy turns out to be quite a heart string tugging story following the title character (McCarthy) who ends up on a road trip with her heavy drinking, pill popping, diabetic, sex craved grandmother Pearl, played awesomely by Susan Sarandon by the way. McCarthy does prov she has a softer, less harsh and vulnerable side more often in this move than all of her previous outings but as a quick overview it isn’t that much different from the skeletal story of Identity Theft. Things don’t start off too well for Tammy, losing her job and her husband in one day. Having been canned from her fast feed joint minimum wage job she returns home early to find her husband (Nat Faxon) and next door neighbour (Toni Collette) in the throes of a nice romantic dinner for two, her life has completely collapsed, so she storms out and heads for her mom’s… two doors down. Her mom lives with her semi-psycho grandmother Pearl, who disillusioned with life and never having completed a lifelong dream Pearl convinces Tammy that they should head out on a road trip, she has money and they have a car. So Tammy and Pearl hit the

road for a trip that should take them from Illinois to Niagara Falls, as expected things don’t go as they planned and all hell soon breaks loose… well not really. Sure lots of wacky stuff befall our duo throughout their journey but for the most part the jokes kinda miss their mark for me? The answers to our antihero’s crude and outrageous behaviour is brought to light over the course of this long car ride where we learn that as far as family is concerned Tammy has always felt distant, unloved and abandoned with her Grandmother the main protagonist having left her when she needed her most. On route they end up in Louisville, Kentucky, and while Tammy flirts badly with young Bobby (Mark Duplass) Pearl gets stuck in to his middle-aged horny dog father Earl (Gary Cole). It is pretty obvious that despite the initial disinterest Bobby will soon fall head over heels in love with trier Tammy, for a comedy move an avenue not really needed and that’s the rub, the movie isn’t really ending up the rip roaring laugh fest that the trailer hinted at… don’t we all hate it when that happens? It’s the lack of pace in these moments that pretty much put the downers on the movie for me and with a supporting cast littered with seasoned pros, Sarandon, Allison Janney (as Tammy’s mom), and Kathy Bates (as Sarandon’s cousin), and maybe I’m just expecting something completely different from this lot, I don’t know? The jokes and running themes never seem to be consistent enough to get any real flow or pace going, it’s up one minute and down the next and some of the big pay-off moments come off as nervy and desperate. Overall no really what I thought it was going to be, but then not really anything surprising either. A good light-hearted comedy that people will forget about pretty soon, kinda early in a career to be saying that though isn’t it Mrs McCarthy? Must try harder…

t took me a while to actually sit down and watch The Purge, last year’s underground summer hit, I’d seen the trailers and it sounder right up my street, but I continually heard from other people that it wasn’t very good. Needless to say I didn’t make the effort to get along and see it in the cinema and held off until just a few weeks ago to see it on DVD. With the decision already made to go see this film looming I thought I’d

better check it out just in case the story required it. I’ve reviewed the original film in the DVD section so if you haven’t seen either check that out as well. There is a statement that rings out early on in The Purge: Anarchy that could be blasted across the bows of an awful lot of movies these days… “It’s not about catharsis… it’s about money,” With the smouldering success of the original film you definitely wouldn’t blame the production company for flinging out another offering so quickly when you consider that it raked in a massive 20 times what it cost to SEP 2014 - issue (42)
make at the box office. The % of good movies to bad movies is pretty low for these endeavours but I’m happy to say that the guys at Universal and director/writer James DeMonaco have pulled off a what the Godfather and Back to the Future did in their day and produced a follow-up that is even better that the original. Sure maybe nowhere near as good as those mentioned, but you get my drift. If you haven’t seen the original the basic premise of The Purge is that America has established a 12-hour period, 7pm – 7am, each year where all crime is legal. The Purge one told the story of a family victimised because they offered shelter

For me The Purge: Anarchy doesn’t just offer itself as an occomplished follow up but surpasses even my expectations (having really enjoyed the first one) and throws it’s hand in the air as a nominee for ‘best mainstream film of the summer.’
Director James DeMonaco does an admirable job at making us question our ‘so called’ fascination with violence with each encounter the group makes. Be they the money fuelled murder parties, organized gang killings or just plain old man in the street killing man in the street. It’s all there and seemingly everyone suffers from this infection, a disease that has been spread and propagated by the country’s most trusted institutes.
In Anarchy we see groups of middle-lowerclass people doing all they can to survive, to make it through the night. When their car breaks down, leaving them stranding a long way from home, Shane (Zach Gilford) and Liz (Kiele Sanchez) struggle not only to stay alive but also with a crumbling relationship.
There is a lot more ‘right to bear arms’ elements around the second film, where the first leaned towards it being a slightly religious tinge to the process, people claim they are acting on the sides of liberty and democracy, although the women on the roof claims it to be ‘Gods Will.’
Eva (Carmen Ejogo) and her daughter Cali (Zoe Soul) soon discover that their home protection leaves them as cannon fodder for the tooled up street gangs and an easy target for her women hating neighbour. Eventually our misfortunates form an alliance with Sergeant (Frank Grillo), a former policeman who likes nothing more than popping off a few rounds to the sound of his roaring muscle car, there’s something naturally violent with Sergeant. But for purposes of the

else is really only along for the violent ride. It’s a cool concept having society playing the bad guy, none of those we meet are really any worse than anyone else, it’s truly not their fault that they can do this, those who have them no longer need to fight the urge for violence, they only need to wait. People have looked at these two of DeMonaco’s films and pondered on whether he is “painting a picture of what could be,” or “arguing we’re already there.” Having been witness to an act of attempted murder that went unpunished where a young guy had his throat cut by two hooded males, surrounded by CCTV cameras, outside a busy shopping centre 500 yards from my doorstep… where police seem to have done nothing, and who obviously know nothing more now than what they did when it happened...???? I for one lean towards the viewpoint that sometime it seems we are living in a society where anyone might just conceivably get away with doing anything they want to do with no repercussions… as a society are we really going backwards now? ased on the Channel 4 TV sitcom which ran from 2008–2010 we first saw the 4 adolescent amigos in their debut big screen appearance in 2012 with The Inbetweeners Movie, which did surprisingly well at the box office raking in £45 million. Such a success signalled an almost odds on certainty that there would be a follow up. I’m happy with that as, as although not ground-breaking, I found the The Inbetweeners Movie 2 to be pretty funny and everything I’d have expected from a cinema release. Like TV show you basically get what you would expect from both the movies with immature, daft, numpty, hormone fuelled, sex on the brain teenage boys, with a nice tinge of innocence mixed in to help us feel for the guys even in their darkest moments. Talk is that this may be the final outing
for the foursome, well how old are they anyway? Inbetween 30 and 50 perhaps? But hey… it’s fun after all and lets just take it for what it is and enjoy, I for one have many a time rolled my window down and shouted Bus Wanker at the crowds waiting on the bus to Livingston, gees I’ve even been known to drive past the crowds that used to queue outside Krispy Kreme’s in Hermiston and shout Doughnut Wankers, so for the most part I’m cool with the type of humour on offer here. McKenzie… Sir, Cartwright… Sir, Sutherland… Sir, Cooper… Sir. That’s right the gang are all here, our lovable no-hopers, on their way to Benadorm…. Ummmm… nope bloody Australia mate..!!!! Why Australia you might ask? Well I did? I’m actually pretty sure it was just so we could use the ‘Down Under’ and ‘bush’ lines as much as possible, but that’s maybe just me. But anyway it’s not that. Jay is actually working in Australia you see. He sends a message home telling everyone how amazing his life is and that he’s a massive DJ living in a huge house and wakes up beside the Minogue twins every morning (yeh we know they’re not twins.) All this bravado provides the perfect reason for his old

muckers to hop on a plane and come visit for a bit… so they do. Exaggerating… what Jay… never..!!! They eventually come round to the reality of the situation and get involved in a massive road trip in hot pursuit of a super sexy young lady (Emily Berrington) who unfortunately is also being wooed by handsome gap year toff Ben (Freddie Stroma). That’s it, that’s all you need to know isn’t it? It’s the Inbetweeners after all it’s just a fun filled 80 mins of pure immaturity, grossness and a touch of romance if you like. The Inbetweeners 2 has a good stab at improving on the first movie which is probably where it falls down a bit, just trying a little too hard. There are some sublime comic moments which I won’t spoil for you but have to mention Will’s attempt to impress Emily with his rendition of Roberta Flack’s ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’…. You just have to see it. If you liked the first Inbetweeners movie then rest assured you will like this one, it wasn’t broke and they didn’t fix it so kudos for just giving us much more of the same. e’ve all known for a while now that the up an coming Season 7 of the amazing Sons of Anarchy was going to be the last and after the Season 6 finale the only thing on most people’s minds was probably the question of exactly who would survive the Season 7 bloodbath that was, without a shadow of a doubt, going to occur. In fact after one of the brutalist finales to the show yet Season 6 left most people shocked and dumbstruck, biting their nails down to the core while craving and feasting on every news snippet and more recently on a slew of crafty trailers sent to tell us not much at all.

SOA has lead the pack for brutal and crushing deaths over the course of its season runs, from Opie to Clay, and they also have a canny knack for ripping your heart out at least once a show. Kurt Sutter, the genius at the helm of the biker gang drama, has warned that the body count is about to rise when the new season kicks off in September with a 90-minute premiere. “Two club members will be dead,” he revealed to Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t think there’ll be more than that.” Yeh right? And who? That’s the question that has had fans debating since the words left his lips, predictions and theories have swamped the net regarding just who could be bumped off in that final season. As we left the boys last time there was 10 Samcro members remaining: Jax, Chibs, Bobby, Tig, Rat, Quinn, Happy, Juice, Montez and West.

They feel like family to people, you have to be very careful not to be arbitrary in terms of who lives and who dies.” If for some bizarre reason you haven't actually watched the Season 6 finale then beware SPOILERS…!!!! Angeles. “I knew that, ultimately, where I wanted to take Jax in that final season is I wanted to remove his true north for that last season. I feel like there need[ed] to be, for someone like Jax, a major psychic and emotional shift.” Season 7, Sutter added, will explore “what happens to a guy who has lost both of the people who he loved the most and who centered him the most,” meaning his wife Tara and his best friend Opie. “It is Jax untethered and on his own in the final season.” “I knew fairly early on that Tara would die before the final season — probably as early as season 2 I had a sense of that happening.” Sutter revealed. “I didn’t quite know exactly, obviously, how it was going to happen in terms of story. I just knew in terms of a mythology mile marker that that’s when it was going to happen.” We know who was responsible for Tara's death, but Jax doesn’t, and as Season 7 kicks off he will almost certainly be out for revenge. But while behind bars on a parole violation it might take a while for that revenge to materialise. Season 7 sees a return for Drea de Matteo,
reprising her role as Abel's mother, while the sassy Venus Van Dam played by Walton Goggins is also back with a vengence. Newbies to the show include the ‘The Bridge’ actress Annabeth Gish comes on board as Charming's new Sheriff Jarry, taking over the reins from Sheriff Roosevelt, who was bumped off by Juice to cover-up Tara's death, and we see her exposed to so much chaos as she tries to works with previous sheriff Wayne Unser and the SOA investigation the murder of both Tara and Roosevelt. Marilyn Manson also makes an appearance in Charming playing a white supremacist called Ron Tully, Courtney Love takes the role as Abel's new teacher Ms. Harrison and Lea Michelle comes on board as Gemma friendly faced truck stop waitress Gertie who she instantly bonds with. Story wise nothing much has actually been revealed over the months, Sutter explained "I'm never quite sure how I'm going to get there, in terms of narrative. I try to leave that loose. I have a great team of writers, and as we break each episode, the A-story that's the big action narrative engine will get tweaked a little bit and go in a different direction, as we go, 'That's cool. Let's try that.' When you pile up enough of those, things look different
than you had anticipated. " Talking recently to the Television Critics Association Charlie Hunnam had some thoughts on what fans could expect from his character after the events of last season. "Jax is in a very schizophrenic state, He's obviously very sad and vulnerable and broken with this huge amount of revenge and anger in his heart." Guy Ritchie, director on upcoming Warner Bros epic King Arthur, had this to say on Jax actor Charlie Hunnam’s role in SOA, King Arthur and that ‘Grey’ film all the ladies talk about…. "When you see Hunnam as Jax Teller leading the Sons into the final, brutal revenge filled final season, I think you'll agree that he has all the intensity necessary to play King Arthur, and that this is a better post-Sons course for him than playing the S&M fetishist billionaire Christian Grey, a role that Sutter and I agreed is better suited to a newcomer than an established actor on the cusp of movie stardom." H
ow does a gentle baking competition filmed in the grounds of a stately home every spring spark so much emotion in its viewers? Whether it’s over a melting baked Alaska, online sexist abuse or guessing who is going to be sent home next; The Great British Bake Off has found a way to get us emotionally invested in cake and the people who bake it.
Iain’s Baked Alaska disaster has probably caused the most ruckus (on Twitter at least) so far this series. Having a contestant not presenting a bake to Paul and Mary had the public wanting someone to blame and calling for their blood. Diana was the victim Page 74
of their onslaught for the crime of taking his Alaska out of her freezer so she could get at her own. Sue Perkins (who was actually in the tent) was universally ignored when she confirmed that said baked Alaska had only been out of the freezer for less than a minute. #JusticeForIain still marched forward. Diana received abuse calling her a ‘whore’ and to ‘go back to the WI’ after this incident, a similar situation Claire, the first eliminated contestant, found herself in. Only Claire’s crime was being overweight and crying which spurred Tweets calling her the same slurs as Diana. Claire and Diana are very different bakers and very different women, but, in the eyes of some viewers, all they see is gender when it comes to criticism. But where does all this vitriol come from? When I watch every bake being judged, the tension is as strong as the anger these sexist Tweets convey. I might not be judging SEP 2014 - issue (42)
contestants by gender or weight but the emotional state the showstoppers put me in could well have me blurting nonsense on social media. Watching this series I’ve figured it out. It’s because The Bake Off gets us very attached to the contestants themselves. They are not shown as brutal competitors out to drag each other down. It is all fair and honest competition where the losers get hugs and tears when they are sent home. That commands respect from the audience, so we can’t bear the idea of anything bad happening to them. This makes the hatefilled tweets more understandable but in no way any more excusable. eason 2 of ‘Under The Dome’ kicked off at the end of August where we re-join our town trapped in a dome residents for another bundle of weird episodes. The show is based on the Stephen King book of the same name, and chronicles the lives of a small town that is suddenly and bizarrely locked off from the rest of the world by a huge clear dome massive transparent dome.
Proving that no-one escapes the dome returning for the new season are stars Mike Vogel as tough guy army vet Dale 'Barbie' Barbara, Rachelle Lefevre as love interest Julia Shumway, James 'Big Jim' Rennie played by Dean Norris, Natalie Martinez as Sheriff Linda Esquivel, Britt Robertson as Angie McAlister, Alexander Koch as son of ‘Big Jim’ Junior Rennie, Colin Ford as Joe McAlister, Phil Bushey as Nicholas Strong, Jolene Purdy as Dodee Weaver and Aisha Hinds as Carolyn Hill. For a recap on Season 1 I’ll quickly say that it all began when a mystery transparent dome crashing down suddenly covering the entire town of Chester’s Mill, coolly slicing cows and stuff in half as it fell to ground. After a while a mysterious glowing egg is found inside the dome, people start behaving weirdly, kids find they have special connections when they touch either the egg or the dome and eventually everything is plunged into darkness by a tiny butterfly. The season ends with Big Jim hell bent on lynching “Barbie” Barbara. The opening episode of the season, ‘Heads Will Roll’ has the future of Barbie firmly in Big Jim’s hands as he continues where season one ended with Barbie accused of crimes that Jim himself was responsible for, someone switches the lights back on again and the Dome itself poses a brand new threat when it develops interestingly deadly magnetic properties. Julia needs the help of a stranger to help save the life of a mysterious girl who might just know more about the source of their predicament, the Dome itself. ootball means two very different games depending on which side of the Atlantic you live and C4 continue in their efforts to bring the American version of the game to a wider UK audience. With the pre-season already underway, C4 are getting ready to broadcast their first live regular season game between the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts in the early hours of 7 September 2014. (If you have one of those picky work bosses who insist you stay awake at your desk on Monday mornings then perhaps 4od will be your better option.)

League’s (NFL) International Series has been increased from two to three games for the 2014 season. Once a month during September, October and November two teams will travel and compete at Wembley Stadium, not for an exhibition game but for regular season points. Expect all the fanfare that comes with a regular season NFL game as well as all the attitude and passion of teams that are coming here to win. If you already have game day tickets you will no doubt be making your own plans, for the rest of us we can sit back and watch all three UK games live on C4.
As 2014 and the regular American Football season draws to a close, the NFL moves into the playoffs which culminate in the Super Bowl in early February 2015. DVDREVIEWS film history. He does so in the full knowledge that they will all be slaughtered. There are no such depths of emotion reached in ‘12 Years a Slave ’. Shockingly, Michael Fassbender’s psychotic slave owner suggests a better film! Fassbender is utterly fearsome as the sadistic Edwin Epps. Fassbender is perhaps the best actor working in cinema today. His performance as Bobby Sands in McQueen’s ‘Hunger’ is as gruelling as anything that has been committed to celluloid in the last twenty years. That film is not watched. It is endured. He was even superb in Quentin Tarantino’s highly offensive (in my opinion!) ‘ Inglourious Basterds ’. He excels here also. The horrific evening ‘ entertainment ’ that is put on by Epps’ terrified, deferential slaves, as he hollers and dances like a preening fool, are the most startling of the film. The cast are excellent and McQueen’s direction is revealing but never intrusive. He may have been overlooked for the Best Director award at the Oscars but perhaps his work was more deserving of the award than Alfonso Cuaron, who triumphed for his special effects laden ‘ Gravity ’. John Ridley (Best Adapted Screenplay) and Lupita Nyong’o (Best Supporting Actress) both picked up Oscars for their respective endeavours.

2 Years a Slave won Best Picture at this year’s Oscars ceremony but, as in the past, scooping Hollywood’s most coveted prize is not necessarily a sign of greatness! The story of Solomon Northup is one that has to be told and it is a poignant subject matter. Director Steve McQueen’s film has at least brought attention to an ugly, shameful period of American history. One was struck by the fact that the events of the film begin in 1841. These atrocities didn’t take place in the Dark Ages or during the Roman dynasty. They unfolded less than two hundred years ago. This is merely a blip in the stratosphere of the human condition. Of course, America wasn’t officially formed until 1776 but the birth of the nation was built on the back of genocide and slavery.
The recent slayings of Trayvon Martin, Renisha McBride and Eric Garner by would be vigilantes and heavy handed cops has once again shown that race relations are still very much frayed in the America of the 21st century. There may be a black President but the spectre of slavery has never really been removed from the American psyche. McQueen’s film confronts such issues with bravery and intelligence. It is just unfortunate that ‘12 Years a Slave’ is not a very good film.
Solomon Northup ( Chiwetel Ejiofor ) is a talented violinist living in upstate New York with his wife and children. Lured to the nation’s capital under the pretence of performing in a travelling vaudeville company, Northup is drugged and sold into slavery. McQueen’s earnest film charts Northup’s tribulations over the next 12 years. Ejiofor gives a very honest performance as the strong willed Northup but this writer just never felt invested in the character’s plight. The narrative is very underwhelming and there isn’t a sense of time passing, there is no strong yearning on the viewer’s part to see this man freed from the inhumane conditions by which he is bound. One just didn’t feel moved by Northup’s captivity. The night before, this same writer was in pieces watching ‘Glory ’, Edward Zwick’s masterly Civil War epic from the late 80’s. DVD/BLU-RAY REVIEWS concrete pouring operation taking place in the morning. For about 60 minutes of this 80 minute movie I waited for something to happen, it didn’t. No drugs, no money laundering, no cops… nothing. When start to escalate at the job and he is forced into telling his boss that he isn’t going to be there in person and that his right hand man Donal (Andrew Scott) would handle things which left his boss not please at all. I thought ok now things will kick off but nope… when he started to chat about Donal having a cider or two and having to go talk to the road workers down the road I thought things weren’t quite right. At that point my son grabbed his phone and after a few minutes admitted this wasn’t the movie he thought it was… Ahhhhhh. So ‘pouring concrete’ did actually mean pouring bloody concrete and there wasn’t anything special or mysterious about Mr Locke… for me anyway, nothing at all. So all we really have is our Ivan, driving down the motorway, trying his hardest to keep his life from turning to mush. Writer/director Stephen Knight is known mainly for his TV work, he was actually the creator of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and more recently movies like Closed Circuit, Hummingbird and Eastern Promises. So you would maybe expect a better stab at a gripping and engaging story that would have warranted you being absorbed into the characters world. But there truly isn’t anything worthy to discover once you do.

espite enjoying the odd single-location film from time to time I wasn’t really a fan of this movie, Tom Hardy is your quintessential ‘actor’ taking it all on his shoulders to carry this one out. I usually enjoy these type of movies based on their subject matter rather than solely on their character actor portrayals and any tension they create. I enjoyed 127 Hours, Buried Alive, Phone Booth or even 100 Feet, which I suppose could be classed in this sub-genre. For me there has to be something else, or a damn big payoff.
On a plus note Hardy is great; we already know that he can hold his own like the best of them, and he does what he is supposed to here, it’s hard though to hold your attention when there is so little meat to the bone. There isn’t nearly enough going on to save what in the end ends up being just a rather bland film. A pretty standard guy, in a pretty standard job, has a wife and family and a mistress. Probably an awful lot of guys out there in the same situation but they don’t have movies made about them. At times I actually did just think to myself that I was watching a man drive and talk on the phone for 80 minutes like a long taxi journey and just as interesting.
Locke presents a film where there are no thrills or even any proper conversations, a film where the whole 80 minutes is just a man driving a car and answering some phone calls… pretty much that’s it. From the conversations he has we learn that he is married with at least one son, works in construction and has the biggest job of his career happening in the morning, has a mistress who is about to give birth… and that’s where he’s heading during the movie. He’ll miss his ‘big job’, he’ll miss watching the big match with his son, so that he doesn’t miss the birth of his new baby. The funny thing is I actually watched this with my son who explained that the ‘big job’ was not what you thought it was, it was code for something else. The cops had bugged his car and it was something to do with money laundering. So… over the next hour and a half or so I waited with baited breath for the story to play out, taking place in real time Ivan Locke (Tom Hardy) makes his decisions and over the phone lets everyone know what’s happening and faces the consequences of his action as he drives through the night. He tries to comfort girlfriend Bethan (Voiced by Olivia Colman) as she lies in hospital awaiting the birth, he confesses all to his wife (Voice of Ruth Wilson) and throughout he tries to direct a massive Mr Suit GoGuide Magazine Contributor SEP 2014 - issue (42)

00: Rise of an Empire arrives about 6 years too late for me. Its predecessor 300 initially raised the bar for the gory matrix styled ‘bullet time’ effect along with stunning cinematography and a comic book approach to shooting the scenes. That approch was to lift images directly from the comic books of the same name and then the scenes were designed to eventually match those stills. Getting to those stills seems to have been a pretty simple road utilising biceps, baby oil and blood. As you would perhaps expect 300: Rise of an Empire, doesn’t change much of that formula, it succeeded last time after all, so why mess around with it. Well that might have worked if there hadn’t been as many other movies/shows utilising it since its initial release and a 3D version does little to help. The movie itself has all the cinematic and hallmarks of its predecessor with a higher amount of bloody action and more deaths than you can probably handle and a seemingly endless procession of muscle bound he-men waiting to meet their fate at the hands of a big bloody sword. For anything more than a surface story you might struggle a wee bit. Taking place over the same three day period as the originally 300. Rise of an Empire moves away from the plight of Leonidas and his ill-fated band of 300 Spartans and chronicles the tale of the fighters who aligned themselves to the bigger Greek cause and stage a last-gasp sea defence lead by Athenian general Themistokles, famed for his strategy in battle. The far superior Persian enemy fleet is run by old-school warrior princess Artemisia, played by the standout Eva Green Let battle commence…!!!!

or those of us out there who remember, the ‘Hammer’ name, it used to mean something when it was attached to a horror movie. During its original incarnation from 1935−1979, Hammer released 163 movies most based around the horror genre and featuring some of the biggest horror stars of the day like Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.
In 2008 Hammer resurfaced with a twenty-part horror serial released through MySpace called Beyond the Rave (2008) about a bizarre group of hardcore nocturnal ravers. Then is 2010 Hammer had the pleasure of released ‘Let Me In’, a remake of the mighty classic Swedish horror movie ‘Let the Right One In’ (a movie I really need to watch again). Then in 2011 the pretty good ‘The Resident’ bore the name along with ‘Wake Wood’ the same year (not seen this one) and finally the really good The Woman in Black in 2012. If you didn’t know that Hammer had done those movies you could, if you thought about it, see a lot of the same qualities in them that you see in all those old classics. Which brings us right up to date and The Quiet Ones, now this is a movie that most people would never ever guess came from the very same classic studio that had delivered such high quality horror movies for all those years. Joseph (Jared Harris) is a professor who is supposedly conducting an experiment to try to help a troubled young girl, Jane (Olivia Cooke). With the help of some students he tries to get to the root of what he think is related to something paranormal. The situation becomes increasingly more dangerous and as events take a turn for the worst and their lives are at risk a student discovers the secret to the evil force contained within the girl. A pretty characterless and un-scary horror movie all told relying entirely on bangs and jump scares to carry the whole thing. Hopefully not a sign of things to come from the Hammer stable.

ichael Fassbender usually brings us bigger a bigger footprint with movies like big-budget flicks like Prometheus and the lately the new X-Men, where he masterly plays one of the best villains to date, and was simply fearless in 12 Years a Slave and is rapidly turning into a modern day Errol Flynn. Playing the lead in Lenny Abrahamson’s new movie Frank we see yet another brave move for Fassbender with a story that spans walks the fine line between quirky and distressing as it covers the touching subject of mental illness, although without really deciding to commit fully to either to be honest. Office drone Jon (Domhnall Gleeson) dreams of the big time, to one day becoming a successful musician, writing songs about the world he lives in, nothing important seems be on the cards for Jon until one day he somehow manages to be in just the right place, at just the right time, and he comes across a guy trying to drown himself in the sea. Turns out he’s the keyboard player in an American band with a strangely unpronounceable name. Don the keyboard player (Scoot McNairy) recruits Jon and soon he is onstage with Frank (Fassbender), the venomous Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal), and the other guys in the band banging out a shocking set of anger fuelled noise. Jon ditches his old life and sets out to record the group’s new record, forming a special bond with the strange and mysterious, bobbleheaded semi-genius that is Frank. The band end up at music industry festival South By Southwest where we learn a lot more about everyone in the band, some good, some bad… well ok, mostly bad.

utlander is a nice surprising adventure sci-fi movie with acceptable special effects, a macho protagonist in Jim Caviezel and well enough action to satisfy fans of the genre on a whole. So much so that the 2009 movie is about to get it’ very own spinoff series filmed on location in non-other than good old Bonny Scotland. With a pretty unexceptional script about a man from the future whose ship crash lands on Earth during The Viking Era. Caviezel plays pilot Kainan who is soon captured by the local Viking horde led by John Hurt. At the same time they capture Kainan a series of attacks befall the clan. Everyone blames a rival clan for the attacks. Turns out that it is the work of a mysterious creature and eventually Kainan and his Viking captors set out to kill the creature. Overall Outlander looks pretty awesome for the most part and the enemy turns out to be a reasonable foe even if it is a mixture of everything that came before. There is a certain depth to the story, the enemy and our spaceman that it does a good job of holding things together. There isn’t enough meat on the bones from Caviezel for it to be truly described as memorable, but his portrayal is decent enough to sustain our interest. Sophia Myles of Underworld and Transformers fame also brings a lot of spark to the movie with her role as the feisty female Viking Freya. Overall a respectable sample of the genre and a definite watch based on the upcoming Scottish based series.
Fassbender is awesome as the enigma that is Frank, a difficult role than we’ve seen him in and one that drives him in a different direction where he can’t reply on his regular charm. Definitely a performance remembering movie rather than a story remembering movie, and something that will no doubt stay with most people well past the drive home. ust when you thought that The Last of Us couldn’t get any better, Naughty Dog decided to port the masterpiece over to next-gen consoles with The Last of Us: Remastered, and why not, it’s one of the greatest games that has ever been released on the PlayStation 3. It’s an even better experience now with the jump to the PS4 and deserves your commitment once more even if you have played it before or are trying it for the first time. It’s pretty sweet how quickly they managed to port the game over, plus it means that Xbox users that bought a PS4 can now experience the greatness of The Last of Us.
The Remastered version doesn’t just include the ‘Left Behind’ DLC content and the new multiplayer maps but as you’d expect the framerates has been truly boosted with the PlayStation 4 version. The original pushed the PlayStation 3 to perform at 30 frames per second at a 720p resolution, now the PlayStation 4 runs the Remastered version at 60 frames per second and at a full 1080p resolution coupled with the PS4’s extra power makes the Remastered look a whole lot better. The Textures are more detailed, lighting is enhanced and you begin to notice everything a lot more as they pop out at you. It may not be the best looking PS4 game out there but for an original PS3 game it’s impressive to look at. Photo Mode is also bundle with the new Remastered version allowing you to freely float about with the controllable camera, modify the visual settings such as the focus and filters, and much more to take some amazingly striking shots.

Naughty Dog obviously had to try integrating the Dualshock 4 controller in some way for the new game so you can now change the mapping of the aiming and shooting to the better and improved L2 and R2 triggers. The backpack menu is also accessed with the DualShock 4’s touch screen pad, and audio diaries and sound effects such as your flashlight turning on and off can all be heard from the Dualshock 4’s internal speaker. As mentioned earlier not only do you get an improved The Last of Us, you also get the ‘Left Behind’ DLC and the multiplayer maps that you originally had to buy on the PS3. Left Behind is an incredible prequel chapter of The Last of Us that follows Ellie’s story. I never played much of The Last of Us multiplayer before I reviewed it last time, and I didn’t much enjoy it either. But even on the PS3 I gave it another go with friends and actually began to enjoy it. Sadly it seems that your progress from original game doesn’t carry over so you are going to have to unlock everything all over again. But if anything that will only increase your addiction to the multiplayer. The Last of Us got praised for pretty much everything when it first got released back in 2013. Now it’s got framerate, its smoother and is sharper and prettier than ever before. A whole bunch of new trophies for you to earn, a whole lot of DLC all rolled into pretty much the best game out at the moment on PlayStation 4. If you have not got this game yet, you really need to play it now.

isen 3: Titan Lords is without a doubt one of the most painfully boring and frustrating games I have ever played. I will admit though there are some good ideas (though most are executed poorly), and some bad ideas.
The moment I started playing and watched the opening scene leading into the tutorial, I know right away this was going to be bad. From the get go; no effort at all from the voice acting, that in itself doesn’t match up the animations, speaking of which the animations are pretty badly designed too. After finishing the tutorial, you immediately run into a bunch of different enemies, when you kill off whatever foe you’re facing, you then walk about 5 steps and you’re facing off against another one. There are several islands to visit each of which gives you a fair amount of things to do. Each location can feel different, sometimes I felt like I actually wanted to go exploring but it’s just overwhelmed with its shoddy, horrendous gameplay. The combat is unsatisfying and frustrating since it takes about half a year to swing a sword. Plus almost every enemy attacks quicker than you. So it feels like there is no rationale/reasonable way that I could win these fights. I actually felt like a level 1 boss in a kid’s game, where I appear as invulnerable up to the point where I’m about to attack then magically revealing my weak spot. I’ve heard the attack animations are intentionally long and frustrating with your character unnecessarily spinning and twirling around, raising his sword high, way above his head, just to make players think about their approach to attacking enemies. But it just doesn’t work; there surely must be a more reliable way to implement that style of play? You also get a pistol in your arsenal but the auto lock-on is so unreliable that you end up shooting things you don’t want to shoot rendering it SEP 2014 - issue (42)

kinda useless. Basically it’s like controlling a really crap pirate, or maybe a brand new pirate that’s somehow never swung a sword in his life. Pretty much the main reason you’ll explore Risen 3 is because of the quests. But these quests can just be pain at times and not even worth doing. Tedious tasks like killing a certain amount of monsters or searching for items for NPC’s, and to top it all off the main story doesn’t really throw anything new at you or try to surprise you. The voice acting can also take you out of the experience just as much the combat. The vast majority of the characters sound flat and don’t match up to the animations to the point where it’s hard to stay invested or care what they say. On some occasions I even ended up tempted to do something I never do… skip dialogue, conversations just feel so dragged out. It’s pretty obvious that I did not like this game much, like I said before there are some good ideas such as the free roaming aspect, surprisingly the kill animations are rather good but that’s all I could find good with Risen 3 so one for the fans only I guess. odemaster took less than a year to bring out GRID ‘Autosport’, by taking in bucketloads of feedback from GRID 2 saying that they had forgotten to include the special touches and elements that fans loved in the original GRID. Strangely Autosport was launched for last Gen consoles and PC, so is this a game that you should be spending your hard earned cash on?
The career mode in Autosport isn’t about gaining popularity or being the nice guy; it’s simply about winning races in a plethora of different driving events. Within the career mode you’ll be pursuing paths down five different styles of driving: Street, Touring, Endurance, Open-Wheel and Tuner. Once you have achieved victory in the five classes you’ll then be invited to race in the championship rounds, where you’ll be put through a gauntlet that tests your ability to progress and shine through any circumstances. With each different discipline, they feature different cars and events. With Street and Touring events you will engage with a number of vehicles, either bumping your way too first place or smashing your way through. With the damage turned on, being involved in a heavy impact crash could potentially muck up your steering and overall performance. Touring events have a twist from a conventional race where it will reverse your position in the race the second round. So if your first in one round you’ll then become last in the next, which can eliminate that feeling of boredom when you’re constantly ahead of the opponents. Open-Wheel events follow a similar structure, but without the mixing up of the grid positions. What happens is that you will have the same race twice in a row in the exact same way, but for some reason these races are incredibly short. If you like tyre wear in your racing games Page 108

then the Endurance events will have you covered. Your goal isn’t simply to complete a certain amount of laps, but to stay on the track for a specific length of time, cementing your position for when the clock runs out. Pushing for first can be tricky as managing your tyres are vital. Harsh cornering will eat away at them making it tougher to sustain the control you need to keep ahead. With the Tuner discipline it’s mostly about what you can do on the track. Some simple races are involved, but the main emphasis is on drift challenges and time attacks, which lets you pay attention to cornering and maintaining a good speed without the other drivers getting in your way. In previous GRID games the handling tends to be a bit genuine but easy to pick up. GRID Autosport though seems to leans further on the realism side, which to me is always a good thing with track racing games. Some players may even feel the need to practice first considering there are different driving styles in the game. Online lets you join races in any of the five categories or just go random if you can’t decide, and the event types just basically follow the career. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to jump in to a good race. If you want your name up on the leaderboards, the RaceNet Challenges provides fresh new goals every week for you to try out. GRID Autosport has over 20 track locations all of which offer some variety. There are a number of licensed tracks and city routes set in Dubai, San Francisco and Chicago. Only thing is though is that if you have played GRID 2 or F1 2013 you’ll recognise these right away and it just seems strange to go back to the same location so soon after just playing them on the previous game. This is more emphasized due to the game having been designed for last-gen consoles and there being no noticeable visual improvements that I can see, guessing that’s why the cockpit view is rather blurred out, probably to hide the lack of detail that was put into the car. Overall GRID Autosport is in fact a rather good racing game, but probably a project that should have taken another year to get it on our brand new next-gen consoles, have the graphics improved and have a lot more tracks and just be better in general. But if you still haven’t gotten yourself a new console and are a fan of the series (and aren’t that bothered about the de ja vu feeling) then this is another racing game for you. Nightmare on Elm Street is a 1984 American horror slasher film written and directed by Wes Craven, and the first film of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. The film stars Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, Ronee Blakley, Amanda Wyss, Jsu Garcia, Robert Englund, and Johnny Depp in his feature film debut. Set in the fictional Midwestern town of Springwood, Ohio, the plot revolves around several teenagers who are stalked and killed in their dreams by Freddy Krueger. The teenagers are unaware of the cause of this strange phenomenon, but their parents hold a dark secret from long ago. Craven produced A Nightmare on Elm Street on an estimated budget of just $1.8 million, a sum the film earned back during its first week. An instant commercial success, the film went on to gross over $25 million at the United States box office. A Nightmare on Elm Street was met with rave critical reviews and went on to make a very significant impact on the horror genre, spawning a franchise consisting of a line of sequels, a television series, a crossover with Friday the 13th, beyond various other works of imitation; a remake of the same name was released in 2010.
