We do try to have a pretty modern approach to GoGuide content and eventually hope to produce articles on subjects outside our usual stuff such as Clubbing, Theatre, Internet, Sport etc.. Almost 2 years have come and gone since the later was released and I’m glad to have the honour of hopefully bringing you the first review of their 3rd addition to an already impressive collection of indie/pop/rock goodness. ‘Lungs’ is a 5 track EP recorded and mixed as usual in the darkest bedrooms of the dudes over at Signal Flow Records and will be released on the Signal Flow label in June (should be the 6th but keep your eyes peeled). Billed as the way forward for the band having spent the past year writing, gigging extensively, travelling the far flung reaches on a Scottish tour and spending time finding their real ‘sound’. The new EP promises to deliver thundering backlines, big guitar riffs and powerful vocals… so having the privilege of an advanced copy of the EP just how does it shape up to previous efforts? From the first few bars of opening track ‘Sixth Sense’ you are treated to the immediately recognisable sound of Penfold in all its glory, but this is a darker, heavier, dirtier sound than we’ve heard before and this might be the ‘sound’ the guys talk about or just a hint at an even more grungier side to these 5 dudes. The trademark Fraser vocals are still there, the jangly guitars, the shouty chorus… but throughout the track we drift over to that heavier side, sounding like a drunk Biffy with the distortion turned up to 11… in a good way, Me likey, me likey lots.

Treading Water kicks off where Sixth Sense left us with that heavy sounding riff’age before giving way to a more subdued and jangly verse. The mid track Once Young does a good job of calming things down a Maybe getting closer to the Penfold we all know this track overflows tad and lets you get your breath back, fair enough it might be for just with classic Ooooooo… Oooooooo’s but does sound more serious the verses as having seen these guys live things tend to get a wee bit though and carries more balls than before, which makes you sit up and lively from time to time and when you’re in a sweaty mosh pit you’ll take more notice of things. appreciate those vital 30 second breaks between the action. to the gunnels with Penfold goodness and ends with a massively shouty finale which I’m guessing will just disintegrate into all out madness in a live situation. Rephrase/Rewind is probably initially the closest to what we’ve heard before form Fraser, Innes, Dunsmore, Sked & More but it soon expands into something quite unexpected, and for me anyway, is one of the strongest tracks on offer, it’s funny how the simplest things always turns out to be the best? Steeped in a wash of distortion and rumbling feedback it definitely hints at a direction that I can see embracing the Penfold qualities and producing some stunning stuff in the future. Finishing off the EP is a track written as result of the previously mentioned Scottish tour, Northern Light. I always pride myself in giving an honest review, and even if it’s a band I really like, I’ll still try to give my honest opinion as I see it… with that out the way I’m not going to say that this is a bad track, on the contrary, I think it’s a pretty good Penfold song, has all the hallmarks of previous releases with maybe just a tinge of heaviness to it. A singalong chorus replaces the usual shouty one (being a non-singer I like shouty ones). On the whole not quite enough of a change for me though and it probably doesn’t belong on this collection of songs, it just doesn’t sit well with the other tracks… back in the old days it would be a B side. The boys maybe have a wee personal connection to it that for me doesn’t translate, maybe in time it will evolve into something else. So from a negative a positive yeh, not a bad song just more fitting to being on previous releases as opposed to the direction I think the band is looking to go… see I’m backtracking now. A sh*t… Ummm… So… summing up, Lungs is a truly awesome 4 track EP, with a great bonus B side. Definitely a showing a flavour of Penfold that I want to hear more of in the future. Keep it up guys 9/10.

n March 2012 The Jesus Trip released their eponymously titled debut album crammed full of Psychedelic Rock tunes that any neo-psychedelia band would be proud of. From opener ‘Little Sista’, through ‘Kaleidoscope Fayre’ and ‘Sleazy Rider’ to closing track ‘If we fail to see the morning’ it’s a big trippy noise that this trio make (helped on keys by good friend Beano). Currently the line-up of the bands is Dez on Bass/Vocals, Lofty Guitar/ Vocals and recent acquisition Maff kicking up a storm on Drums having replaced Gaz who played on the first album. I’ve only hear of the guys playing a handful of gigs over the years and I’ve so far never actually had the privilege of seeing them live but they have graced a few places and from what I’ve read and heard you won’t be disappointed, hopefully seeing the guys live is something I’ll get to remedy in the near future. The bands 2nd release ‘Cosmic Medicinal Compound’ EP sees them returning to what they know and do best and that is all out kick ass psychedelic rock. The 4 tracks on offer definitely show signs of the bands developing their own unique psychedelia sound, a layered ‘wash’ of sound as opposed to a wall of sound, A heavy wash mind you. Opener ‘Believer’ is all over those classic sounds, grooves and riffs, ‘With No Shoes’ treads a rockier path before ending in with manic wah-wah finale while ‘Cherry Rainbow’ again blends a rockier vibe with a definite early 60’s vocal treatment. EP closer ‘Edward Jones’ you just have to listen to, there is so much in it, there isn’t any point in me telling you about it as it would take too long and this isn’t really a review of the EP just a wee intro to the band. And when you think that both these releases (i’m sure its both? but feel free to correct me guys) are ‘live’ studio recordings says a lot about what we can expect from a proper multi track overdub studio recording, like I’ve said before... I for one can’t wait. THE GOGUIDE INTERVIEW with

GG: How did the band name come about, any amazing, heartwarming or uplifting story behind it? TJT: It comes from a 1971 film of the same name. A heartwarming tale of a motorcycle gang on the run from the police who take refuge in a convent before kidnapping/ converting the young Mother Superior and going on the run again. GG: How long have you been a band? TJT: We have all been in bands for years. The Jesus Trip has been going since 1992 with various groovy people passing through. The current incarnation has been going since March last year. GG: Who are the members, what do they do in the band and how did you all meet? TJT: Dez - Bass, Vocals Lofty - Guitar, Vocals Maff - Drums, Vocals Lofty has known Dez for many years and when our friend Beano got Lofty down to jam with the Trip, he stayed. When we were looking for a new drummer last year it was again Beano who put us onto Maff and we have been jamming, gigging and recording ever since! GG: What or who inspired you to get into music? TJT: Dez - Glen Michaels Cavalcade, Lofty - The Monkees/ Banana Splits, Maff - Big brothers record collection GG: Who are the major influences for the band? TJT: Each other GG: Describe your sound in three words? TJT: The Jesus Trip GG: What was the first tune you learned to play? TJT: Naw GG: What has been the best gig you played and why? TJT: We did a show at the excellent Bathgate Venue Purple Orange last Halloween. Great sound, great crowd, great night and we must not forget the fabulous dancing Dark Avenger! GG: Which venue would you LOVE to play next? TJT: Dez - Brixton Academy Lofty - The Barras Maff - Pompeii GG: So what can an audience expect when they bear witness to your live performance? TJT: Depends what they’ve taken! The unexpected! GG: What do you think of the Scottish music scene just now? TJT: We’re not aware of a ”scene” as such but it’s great to see so many good bands out there doing it live! GG: What local/unsigned bands do you like at the moment? TJT: The Changes, Alan Smithee, Cousin Kenny and lots of singer songwriters like Little Songbird, Danny Livingstone and Pat Swift who we have had the pleasure of sharing stages with recently. Also digging the Liberty Takers and the Fire and I. GG: If you could tour with anyone, past or present, who would it be? TJT: Dez- T Rex Lofty - Hawkwind Maff - Funkadelic GG: What does the next year hold for you? TJT: Dez- Finishing the proper album, getting new songs out there and blowing some minds. Lofty - Finish mixing the live tracks for you all to hear, then finish the album ... Musical Work, rest and play! Maff Adventure! GG: What’s the best song you’ve heard this year? TJT: It would have to be one of our own, but which one!? GG: It’s the year of independence, Yes or No? TJT: YES GG: Finally, is there anyone you’d particularly like to acknowledge for supporting you along the way? TJT: All our families and friends who have supported/put up with us (not an easy task!)and continually make the stupendous effort to come out and see us play (you know who you are (sometimes)!) . s we move towards summer time proper our minds turn to long lazy summer nights, holidays and for us ‘musos’ (gees, did i just call myself a muso? kill me now....) the possibility of us getting out there and enjoying a few outdoor music events which is a bonus, well actually any outdoor music event with 2 or 3 days without the usual Scottish downpour would definitely be a big bonus…, unlikely but a big big bonus no less. I’ve covered my feelings on Scottish festivals in past issues and although more and more seem to be kicking off every year, it does seem to be pretty clear that there has been a definite shift towards a more chart oriented, ‘party’ festival, peppered with a less than typical music festival line-up of mainstream B list pop starts and DJ’s…. so let’s not go there this year.

Our only surviving big gun, T in The Park can’t sell their tickets for love nor money (well other than to the ticket touts), check eBay a week before and I’m sure you can be pretty confident of picking up a couple of tickets at face value…. 5 years ago you’d be paying FOUR times that to get a weekend pass. T In The Park for me has lost it’s soul as a music festival, it’s kudos is gone, it’s missing it’s mojo.... bands have been replaced by ‘chart acts’ and the music is now so diluted that it has become more akin to a drunken stag weekend in Majorca... it’s now for the ‘party’ people, the music has pretty much gone, i’d guess if they just put up a big bunch of screens and played videos it would still get it’s current crowd to turn up.

On paper they said it wouldn’t work, a festival in late September in a remote village on the West Coast of Scotland 60 miles from the nearest town, but here we are seven years later having had the likes of Paolo Nutini, Mumford & Sons, Franz Ferdinand, The Fratellis and Scouting For Girls grace our little stage. “Those who’ve been rave about it.....its a small event, but the line up overshadows that of many mainstream festivals.” - The Observer “Gaining the reputation as the place to finish off the summer. “ Grazia Magazine

Latest of the Scottish big boy festivals Rockness, yeh ‘Rock’ hahaha, becomes the latest casualty after announcing they would be taking a year off due to some ‘sporting events’ happening this summer. Maybe they should tell Glastonbury, Reading, Download, Sonosphere, Isle of Wight, Latitude, V and all the rest? These other guys don’t seem to have noticed this fact, or maybe they don’t care? They may take a hit this year but they recoup it back next year right? The same thing happens every 4 years after all. There are still some great days and weekends of music to be had this year so here’s our wee pick of just some of the best or most interesting out there this year. MEADOWS FESTIVAL

Live@Troon was created as a resu lt of two friends thinking it would be a great idea to hold a music festival in Troon. Gathering together a grou p of like minded people, a motley crew of six forg ed ahead, recruited volunteers, raised funds, booked bands and made plans holding the first festival in 2010. Opting for charitable status, Live@Troon’s dual purpose became clear – to promote and develop young mus ical talent and cultural development in Ayrshire; and to promote Troon as a tourist destination.

The Edinburgh Meadows Festival is a free volunteer-run annual event featuring live music, merchandise, stalls, kids’ and adults’ activities and loads more. The first Meadows Festival took place in 1974 and since then the Festival has been an annual feature of the calendar. The Festival Committee work hard throughout the year to put on the event, this year to be held on the 7th and 8th of June, including: • Live music, with something to suit every musical taste! • A popular Kids’ Area with activities to keep younger visitors entertained, including face painting, story telling and more • General Merchandise stalls selling everything from antiques to clothing to fair trade products (and much more!) • Information stalls of various types – local associations, campaigns, charities etc • Food stalls to suit every taste and appetite • A football competition in which various local primary schools compete

Live@Troon holds an annual wee kend long music festival during the first weekend of September each year encompassing a diverse range of music for all tastes. Since 2010 the festival has become a flagship event in the West of Scotland calendar hav ing gained a reputation as a distinctive, high quality eve nt, noted especially for its inclusiveness and friendliness. Events are held at the Concert Hall Complex, public spac es, churches, hotels, clubs and pubs town-wide. Check online for latest lineup/info

This years Strathyre Music Festival features many of the artists that made the 2013 Festival such a popular and successful event. Plus many new special guests and new attractions. The 2014 Festival will be much bigger than the first event and this time, centred fully around the Beautiful and natural mountainous amphitheatre setting of, Strathyre in a large single tent venue with nearby Festival Market and several Festival Busking stations also featuring a dedicated indoor Jazz and Blues venue We are delighted to have won the accolade of being Scotland’s largest community based Music Festival in 2014. We are grateful to have the support of Visit Scotland / event Scotland and are honoured to be promoted on the Homecoming Scotland 2014 programme. The 2014 festival will feature a large number of new artists and the Associated Festival Market will be more than double in size with a special theme . REWIND FESTIVAL

Now in its fourth year in Scotland and sixth year in the South of England, Rewind Festival takes place July 18th - 20th 2014 at Scone Palace, Perth Featuring fantastic performances from a massive line-up of iconic artists and plenty of other festival fun including camping, funfairs, silent disco, street entertainers, fireworks and much more...

Rewind showcases bands and solo artists that had success in the 1980s and as such is also known as the 80’s Rewind Festival. As well as music, in 2009 the site also featured a fun fair, street entertainment and artists from The Comedy Store. The festival is run by The Rival Organisation and Into The Groove, and was started after the success of one-off 80’s retro shows of previous years. Since 2012, the festival has expanded internationally to South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Thailand, and in 2011 there was a stalled effort to expand to Australia. Might not be everyones cup of tea for Scotland as a whole, as so far the lineup seems to be going down the lines of a lot of the festivals we already have with Wickerman and now Rewind (Deacon Blue and Simple Minds etc.), but the local area could very well be heading in the right direction with the brand new Party At The Palace festival. RADIO 1’S BIG WEEKEND

Radio 1’s Big Weekend - the station’s annual flagship event - will take place in Glasgow in 2014.

Over 60,000 lucky music fans will be able to enjoy performances across the weekend of 23-25 May. On Friday night Radio 1 will be getting the Big Weekend party started by broadcasting live from the iconic George Square in Glasgow. Radio 1’s Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and Danny Howard will be joined by Martin Garrix and Tiësto. Saturday and Sunday will be similar to previous Big Weekend events, with a Main stage, an In New Music We Trust tent and a BBC Introducing stage at Glasgow Green. Headling Saturday’s Main Stage with be Coldplay, with Example headling the In New Music We Trust Stage. Sunday is the turn of Kasabian on the INMWT stage and Katy Perry closing the weekend from the Main Stage. LIke all ‘real’ festivals this one features a heavy leaning towards new and unsigned music, it after all where the next superstars come from, with its ‘In New Music We Trust’ stage (not quit sure how new some of the artists on there are since Kasabian headline this years????) AND a full ‘BBC Introducing’ stage. Although tickets are all gone i like the way the tickets work for this event. As with previous Big Weekends, tickets will be geographically weighted and an element of preference being given to local residents: 50% of tickets will be reserved for those living within the area covered by Glasgow City Council; 45% will be reserved for those residents in the rest of Scotland; with the remaining 5% for other audiences across the UK and those in the Republic of Ireland. T IN THE PARK

What began in 1994 as a founding partnership between Tennent’s Lager and T in the Park, has become a hugely successful, long-standing relationship for over 20 years. This years event takes place as usual @ a disused Balado airfield, Kinross, the same location as the past few years since moving from Strathclyde Park, howevere rumour has it that this is the last time. This is because of concerns over the Forties Pipeline, which runs directly underneath the former Balado airfield.

In recent years, the festival has shared much of its line-up with Oxegen, a festival that takes place on the same weekend in County Kildare, Ireland. Acts usually play T in the Park one day and Oxegen the next, or vice versa. In an attempt to boost ticket sales, the 2014 festival will see an extension of the acts’ duration on stage. On the Friday, the acts are due to start around lunchtime as oppose to 5pm; and the Saturday headliners will finish at 1am. TITP has always had one toe firmly in the ‘easy listening’ arena but as i said in our intro “T In The Park for me has lost it’s soul as a music festival, it’s kudos is gone, it’s missing it’s mojo.... bands have been replaced by ‘chart acts’ and it has become more akin to a drunken stag weekend in Majorca...” lets hope it finds its way again soon. ULLAPOOL GUITAR FESTIVAL

Started in 2000, oddly enough, to bring business and tourism into the local community in the wake of the foot and mouth epidemic. October was chosen as a way of extending the tourist season, and,as sponsors came and went, and audiences increased in size, the Festival evolved through performances in local pubs and the village hall to its current (and hopefully long-term) home in the MacPhail Centre. This has all the comfort and facilities associated with a first-class performance venue, including superb acoustics, but also the space to put on workshops, to expand our trade show and to provide our own catering. The longevity and success of the Festival has been built on two foundations. The first is the solid core of punters who not only make the pilgrimage year upon year, but are willing to go that extra mile in what they contribute to ensure that the Festival continues to flourish. The second is a group of musicians who have become permanent features of the Festival – artistes like Hugh Burns, John Goldie and Clive Carroll. Their unwavering support and their status and reputation within the guitar world have allowed us to attract the cream of guitarists – over a hundred of them over the years – from around the globe. n decades gone by it used to be the norm for everyone in a neighbourhood to know each other. Atmospheres were friendly and everyone felt safe – togetherness was the key to a happy community. Since then, technology has advanced immensely making it possible to stay connected to people without any physical closeness. They have also helped the decline of the closeknit community. Virtual environments, such as social networks, have drained emotional attachments between people to the point where the most interactions amongst a lot of neighbours are the sharing of an occasional ‘like’ or comment. Whilst technology and social networks have their place, it is important not to lose sight of traditional values, and not to forget how important local communities are. It’s time to get back your sense of community, but borrowing a cup of sugar is a little cliché, so try sharing Herman, the German friendship cake around your neighbourhood! Herman is all about sharing and friendship – which is why ‘he’ is the perfect candidate to help bring a neighbourhood together! Think of ‘him’ like an edible chain letter. One person starts ‘him’ off and follows very simple instructions for 10 days. Once the time is up, ‘he’ is divided into 4 – one portion gets cooked and the other 3 get passed on to others so that ‘he’ can continue to spread love, friendship and deliciousness. The recipients then repeat exactly the same instructions as the initiator, and it goes on and on. Herman requires very little attention throughout the 10 days, (‘he’ mostly just sits on the worktop with a tea towel over ‘him’) but the results are amazing. There are so many recipes that you can make with Herman, which can be shared with other Herman owners. I turned my Herman into mini muffins with apple and cinnamon and served ‘him’ with ice-cream. Why not start your own Herman and help bring your community a little closer together?

Colours are becoming richer, the air is being perfumed with floral scents from fresh flowers and the general atmosphere is lighter and more positive. The spring/ summer season is truly a time for rejuvenation and revitalisation for everything in nature – and that includes you. As time goes by and New Year’s resolutions are a very distant, blurry memory rather than a set of goals, it becomes easier to let exercise regimes gradually slip to the wayside and the ready meals slowly become a regular at your dinner table. But if you take a page out of nature’s book and look to giving your body and life a fresh start you’ll get back on track in no time.

EXERCISE

he arrival of summer brings many people back out onto the streets to exercise as the evenings are lighter and the mornings are warmer. If you are thinking of taking advantage of the summertime air, then be sure to follow Fitness First’s Andy Hall’s running tips: Don't Run Heels First: Avoid striking the pavement with your heels as this can contribute to back and knee pain. Landing on your forefoot instead will allow your muscles to catch your weight and reduces the impact on joints. Watch your stance: Leaping forward and striding too far while you run is inefficient and will drain energy fast. Instead make sure you stand tall and lean slightly forward, so when you feel like you are going to fall, step forward just enough to catch yourself. This should be the length of your stride. Less motion also means less wear and tear on the joints. Choose your shoes carefully: The human body works with one major premise: use it or lose it so if your shoes are too comfortable and are not offering the support that you need the foot/the arches will eventually start to fail to do their job, making the foot weaker the runner overall more prone to injury. Barefoot running shoes can also help as these strengthen and develop the natural muscular support in the foot and ankle. (ED: although this last part hasn’t been proven in tests and some say it could actually damage you feet) Keep hydrated! Being dehydrated can seriously affect your performance. An intensity of 50% effort when hydrated can feel like 70 or 80% when dehydrated. Keep track of progress. Keep a running log so that you can monitor error and your positive effects of your training. Warm up - this can increase performance by up to 17%. Keep you stretching dynamic, keeping away from static stretches as these can make your joints unstable.

Cool Down (including static stretches) - This allows your body to gradually work down from the state of high exertion. It also allows your muscles to remove waste products and they will be better prepared for your next training session. However, to many, the thought of exercise brings up many troubling thoughts: I’ve already worked hard at work, just the idea of an hour’s gym session is exhausting, or I’ll be ok if I miss one and work harder tomorrow and the most common I just don’t have the time. But the truth is that you don’t need to spend hours in the gym or even do anything too intensive if you don’t want to. Simple exercises can yield amazing results, and you may not even realise how easy it is to incorporate them into your life. The most obvious exercise would be walking. Walking is a great way to introduce regular, low impact exercise to your daily life – and best of all, it’s free! Taking the dog for a walk, a stroll with your significant other or even taking the stairs more often will all count towards the amount of calories you burn in a day. Try to walk wherever possible, if you can get off the bus at an earlier stop then do so. Cycling, like walking, can also be a low impact way to exercise and is a really easy way of getting out and about. Try cycling to the supermarket if you know you only have a few things to purchase that would fit inside a backpack or a basket on your bike. Or go for a bike ride with the children or your significant other, it will improve your overall fitness at a pace that you can control and can bring you closer together as a family. Whilst the gym is a daunting thought for many of us, there is more to it than running on a treadmill or spending ages on the cross trainer. Many gyms offer fitness classes that are suitable for beginners and experts alike. The classes often include pilates, yoga, step aerobics and the ever popular Zumba. The classes are usually available on a pay-as-you-go basis or can be bought in blocks.

pring/summer is all about new life, and whilst we all only get one, there are things we can do to make it look like we’ve been given a fresh start. The most important one is also the most obvious one: sleep. Sleep is the time that our body uses to rest and repair cells and get us ready for the next day, inadequate sleep leads to cells not being repaired, tiredness, dark circles under the eyes and an increased risk of stress related diseases. It is recommended that each adult gets 8 hours of sleep per night. To help you achieve this, write down everything that is on your mind,

such as to-do lists, on a piece of paper before you go to bed. This clears your mind and gets it ready for sleep. Also try to make your room as dark as possible. Research from the Lighting Research Centre at Rensselaer Polytechnic has found that even a relatively little amount of expose to LED’s, backlit displays and other sources of light can stop people from sleeping. This is because the light alters a person’s circadian rhythms and supresses the development of the melatonin hormone.

pring/summer make-up trends are often a lot more fun than winter and autumn trends as bright colours make their comeback. There are two main trends that are popular this year – fresh-faced or pastels.

For the fresh face look it is important to have dewy, soft skin that is radiant and glowing. On top of eating well, you can also use a light moisturiser such as Simple’s Kind to Skin Hydrating Light Moisturiser. Follow this up with a BB cream rather than foundation for a lighter, more natural look. Garnier’s BB Cream Miracle Skin Perfector is a great all round BB cream. Add a natural, soft rose colour to your lips such as L’Oreal’s Made For Me Naturals lipstick and brush your cheeks

with a pale pink blush to bring out a naturally flushed look – try No7’s Mineral Perfection blusher. Keep your eyes bare except for a light coating of mascara. For a playful pastel look, add a light layer of foundation to your face and neck. Apply pale, soft pastel colours such as pinks, greens, blues or yellows to your eyelid – YSL’s Eye Shadow Quartet in No.6 is a great compact for this look. To make this look more fun, add a cats-eye effect with black liquid eyeliner such as Max Factor’s Glide and Define liquid eyeliner. Maracanã, officially called Estádio Mário Filho, was built to serve as the flagship venue for the 1950 World Cup. It was meant to become the biggest football stadium in the world. When Brazil got awarded the 2014 World Cup in 2007, it was clear that Maracanã, which was destined to host the final, would need a massive redevelopment. Building works started in 2010, and involved the complete rebuilding of the bottom tier and the installation of a new roof, with a capacity of 79,000 seats as a result.

The design of Estádio Nacional de Brasília was inspired by the works of architect Oscar Niemeyer, famous for his role in the design of the city of Brasilia. Most characteristic feature are the 288 pillars that form the exterior and are holding up the roof.

Mineirão, officially called Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto, was built to provide the city of Belo Horizonte with a larger alternative for Estádio Independência, then the prime venue of the city. The stadium, projected with a capacity of 130,000 spectators (PRE ALL-SEATER RULES), was meant to become the most modern stadium of Brazil and the new home of Atlético Mineiro and Cruzeiro. Construction took almost five years, and on the 5th of September 1965 Mineirão officially opened with a match between a selection from the state of Minas Gerais and Argentine side River Plate (1-0).

Preparation and cooking times

Prep time: 15 mins - Cook time: 30 mins (Serves: 6)

Ingredients

1 tablespoon rapeseed oil 110g (4 oz) chorizo sausage, chopped 140g (5 oz) cooked ham, chopped 1 medium onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and diced 1 red pepper, diced 2 (400g) tins chopped tomatoes 1 small hot green chilli, diced 350ml (12 fl oz) water 2 (400g) tins black beans, rinsed and drained 1 mango - peeled, stone removed and diced half a bunch fresh coriander, chopped salt to taste

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty... Grab a large pot and heat your oil on a medium heat, toss in the chorizo and ham and cook for 5 minutes. Next add the onion and cook until tender. Mix in your garlic, cook until tender, then throw in the sweet potatoes, red pepper, tomatoes, chilli and water. Bring the mixture to the boil, reduce heat to low, cover and simmer 15 minutes, until sweet potatoes are tender. Pour in the beans into the pot and stir well, cook without a lid until heated through. Lastly add the mango, coriander and season with salt to your liking.

10 pork spareribs 1/2 cup soy sauce 10 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tablespoon dried rosemary 1 tablespoon dried oregano 2 bay leaves 1 lime, juiced 10 sprigs fresh parsley ground black pepper to taste 2 limes, cut into wedges

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty... Fill a large pot with just enough water to cover the ribs and place them in the water. Add your bay leaves, garlic, rosemary, oregano, soy sauce, lime juice and 3/4 of the parsley. Bring it all to the boil and then leave to simmer on a medium heat, without a lid, until all the water has gone completely, should be around 25 minutes or so. Remove the bay leaves but keep on the heat and let your ribs brown, turning a few times. Mix up the browned bits and softened garlic from around the bottom of the pot. When you’re happy that everything’s cooked through take the meat out and leave them on a paper towels to drain. Season with black pepper and garnish your lime wedges/parsley as desired.

Ingredients

Cake 250ml vegetable oil 400g caster sugar 4 large eggs 3 medium carrots, peeled and sliced 300g plain flour 1 tablespoon baking powder

Chocolate icing 250ml milk 1 tablespoon butter 2 tablespoons honey 100g cooking chocolate

Now lets get down to the nitty gritty... First stick your oven on and pre heat to 180. Grab a medium size cake tin, grease and flour as needed. Get your blender/food processor out and combine the oil, sugar, eggs and carrots. Blast them until pretty smooth. Pour the mixture into a big bowl and sift in the flour and baking powder. With a big spoon blend both sets of ingredients. When done, pour the whole mixture into your pre prepared tin. Bake in the oven. Remove after 40 mins and set aside to cool. Chocolate icing: On a medium heat bring to the boil all ingredients for the chocolate icing, stirring all the time. Reduce the heat and cook for 5 minutes. When the mixture eventually thickens allow it to cool slightly before pouring it over your now cooled carrot cake.

f you want to perform like a pro athlete (and who doesn’t, really?), It’s not all about the training. You are what you eat, too.

The intensity of women’s training has increased, and with that, the need to refuel correctly is more vital than ever before. So here are some of my favourite nutrition tips to help you get stronger, faster, and fitter than ever before, no matter what you’re trying to master.

DON’T SKIP BREAKFAST!

STAY HYDRATED 24/7 Drinking water while you work out is great, but if you start your race on empty, you’re never going to finish as strong as you want. Athletes should be consuming .5 to 1 ounce of H2O per pound of body weight every day. You also shouldn’t wait until race day to see how your body responds to whatever beverage they’re handing out along the course. Sip on the same beverage during your training runs to stay hydrated and save yourself from any future tummy troubles.

Your blood sugar is already low when you wake up, so you should have something carb-laden to eat, like porridge or fruit as soon as you get out of bed. That way, 30 to 45 minutes will have passed before you actually head out the door. If you’re not used to eating in the morning, start small. Drink a glass of apple juice before your workouts until your stomach adjusts. Mixing in protein (cream cheese, peanut butter, yogurt, etc.) is fine, but it slows down your gastric emptying rate, so you’ll need more time between when you eat and when you hit the road.

One of the biggest mistakes athletes make is heading out for a run in the morning without eating anything first.

One of the best things you can do to better your performance is to stay healthy, which means that you need a good amount of antioxidants and superfoods in your diet. Eat lean proteins, and colourful fruits and veggies as part of your daily snacks and meals every day. The more colour on your plate, the better. Stocking up on Greek yogurt, which is high in probiotics, as another stay-healthy tool. Sprinkle some walnuts and fruit or flax seeds on top for a bonus antioxidant boost or use in your daily smoothies and shakes.

According to experts, it’s quite common for female athletes (yup, even the pros) to be deficient in iron, which could slow you down and increase your risk of injury in any sport. So be sure to include plenty of iron-packed products, such as oatmeal, red meat, and spinach, into your meals.

PLAN AHEAD Olympic athletes have to travel all over the world to compete, and being on the go makes it tough to maintain a routine. They have to do a lot of planning to stay in shape. I recommend you do your weekly meal prep on Sundays. Put together some healthy snacks and meals that you can easily grab throughout the week. And keep an individual-sized blender, around so that you can prepare high-protein recovery drinks whenever you want.

WEIGHT

DON’T DIET The biggest nutrition mistake I see female athletes make is reducing and/or limiting their caloric intake in an attempt to be lean. This causes reduced stores of carbohydrates in your body, which are essential for training and performing, and can then lead to muscle breakdown, as your body eventually starts to use protein as an alternative fuel source.

CARBS

CRANK UP THE CARBS If you wait until the day before your race to carboload, you’re too late. You need to focus on your nutrition every day, and then the night before is a good time to simply top off your fuel stores. When you consume too many carbs at once, your body can’t use it all, so it stores any excess as fat, which will do you no good come race day. To ensure you’re not eating too much the night before, simply replace one protein or veggie portion of your plate with another serving of carbs. For race morning (if your event lasts more than an hour), have a high-carb, low-protein breakfast a Page 52

couple of hours before the start (Note: Now is not the time to try anything new!) Continue to drink fluids, like water and electrolyte drinks, until about 15 minutes before go-time.

Refuel during your race to finish as fast (or faster) than you started. Depending on your event, you should be taking in about 30 to 60g of carbs per hour to replenish your glycogen stores and continuously consume fluids. A lot of triathletes overdo it on calories and underestimate the value of hydration. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not hydrating along with those calories, then it will lead to an upset stomach.

Last but not least immediately after you finish a high-intensity and/or endurance activity (within 30 minutes), you should consume something made with a mix of protein and carbs, like a glass of chocolate milk or a whey protein shake. This will help reduce muscle soreness and aid in your muscle recovery. Within five minutes of finishing, you should have had water or an electrolyte drink. Within 15 to 20 minutes of finishing, consume a recovery drink that contains 20g of a high-quality protein blend and at least 60g carbs. And within one hour of finishing, consume a meal with lean meat or egg, cheese, and salad filling and carb portion. Even when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not racing, you should be making choices that will help your body recover faster. Avoid processed carbs, such as white flour products and wheat in general, which increase inflammation, and opt for anti-inflammatory foods, like cherries, walnuts, and kale, instead. ost of the time it's best to read the book before you see the film, and a lot of the time that's the case with me but unfortunately that's not the case with this film. I wasn't too sure what to expect. In all honesty, I had no idea what to expect. So I was thrilled when this film turned out to be absolutely amazing! I'd say the most recognisable name in this film is probably Geoffrey Rush. If you've never heard of him then you are seriously uneducated and are not fit to be a film fan! Don't worry, let me try and remedy that â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Geoffrey Rush was Captain Barbosa in Pirates of the Caribbean and the speech therapist in The King's Speech, so you'll have seen him around. This film was fantastic from start to finish. I find some films like this can get very tedious, they end up being epics. But The Book Thief was truly amazing. It follows the heartrending story of Liesel who craves books during a time when books were forbidden. Whilst the chaos of World War Two overcomes Germany, Liesel is battling her own problems. But not all is lost. She finds that she has true friends in people that you would least suspect. I think that what makes this film particularly special is the delicate balance between a captivating yet heartbreaking story. I'm not going to lie but I spent the majority of this film crying. It was incredibly poignant. I think it's a good thing though and it works in favour. Some films can over do it, but The Book Thief seems to have managed to find the right balance between entertainment and seriousness. I guess I give a round of applause to the director Brian Percival (Downton Abbey, 2010-2012). There's a lot of stuff out there at the moment that's already been done, or is just plain tacky. If you desperately want something that's original, emotional and yet humorous in places, then make sure this is on you DVD list. I cannot wait for this one to be released. It will definitely be added to my collection!

’d bet that there is a high probably that most peoples reasons for seeing Paul W. S. Anderson’s Pompeii is none other than Kit Harrington himself, you know that Jon Snow guy off Game of Thrones, well whether it be dreamy eyed females or dragged along boyfriends/husbands, although it is billed as a disaster movie so we, the latter, should be ok right? Well um… read on. So... with the probability that for most of the watchers this young guy is carrying this flick firmly on his shoulders how does he fare? Well, sadly not very well, you can’t just pluck a character from one thing and plonk him into another thing as almost the same character and get away with it? That’s what it feels like to me anyway, and not even the addition of some other big names in supporting roles could rescue what is primarily an action movie that lacks any real suspense or genuine passion. By the end I didn’t really care either way if any of them lived or they all end up buried in a pile of ‘roasting hoat lava’. Pompeii should be a gift to storytellers, a readymade ending that everyone knows is coming, so we have our suspense, with a blank canvas to do as you please, to build the stories, the characters and the events leading to the certain demise of those characters, or maybe to have you rooting for specially chosen survivors? Every disaster has survivors doesn’t it? Well, unfortunately even the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and a whole city destroyed isn’t enough to pull this movie

from its bed of mediocrity. I don’t know they seem to have missed by a lime one of the most important facets of moviemaking and storytelling… suspense! It is a quote that has been repeated to death over the years but Mr Hitchcock does famously explain to the masses the actual difference between suspense and surprise in his famous ‘if a bomb goes off’ masterpiece. It’s like he’s reminding everyone how they should be doing things and some of these film makers should have it done as a half sleeve tattooed on their forearm to remind them to work that little bit harder to treat their viewers to something they can truly get their teeth into. I suppose Anderson, best known for his Resident Evil movies, can’t be 100% to blame as his primary role is to bring someone else’s script to life, so let’s blame Janet Scott Batchler, Lee Batchler and Michael Robert Johnson for missing the boat on probably one of the biggest historical ‘suspense’ situation known to man. Well done guys. Anyway, on to the movie, as we know based on an original screenplay by the above dynamic trio, it has the bare faced cheek to lift shamelessly from a host of movies we’ve all seen before, I actually think they had their own script on the table beside the Gladiator script for comparison, someone opened the door, a big gust of wind blew the scripts all over the room and when they picked them up they had mixed the two together.. maybe it’s me, but just sayin’, and lets not start on Titanic please. Rather than having the eruption occur early on, and making the movie a survival epic, it is held back until the final quarter, Anderson obviously hoping we would all be on the edge of our seats but for me it erupted in his face under the circumstances, those being a pretty shit storyline and some dire characters who we don’t really care about by the time the big bang occurs. Our hero Milo (Harington) is a slave forced into the gladiator arena to survive, whilest harbouring feelings of revenge against the evil Roman senator Corvus (Keifer Sutherland). Back when he was a boy in the north of England (convenient…) Corvus slaughtered his family …. I know, I know, I KNOW…. Just don’t say the G word.

There is a bomb beneat h you and it is about to explode! There is a distinct differe nce between "suspense" and "surprise," and yet many pictures continually confus e the two. I'll explain what I mean. We are now having a ver y innocent little chat. Let 's suppose that there is a bom b underneath this table between us. Nothing hap pens, and then all of a sudden, "Boom!" There is an explosion. The public is surprised, but prior to this surprise, it has seen an absolutely ordinary scene, of no special consequence. Now, let us take a suspen se situation. The bomb is underneath the table and the public knows it, probably because they hav e seen the anarchist place it there. The public is aware the bomb is going to explode at one o'clock and there is a clo ck in the decor. The public can see that it is a quarter to one. In these conditions , the same innocuous conversation becomes fas cinating because the pub lic is participating in the sce ne. The audience is longin g to warn the characters on the screen: "You shouldn't be talking about such triv ial matters. There is a bom b beneath you and it is abo ut to explode!" In the first case we have given the public fifteen seconds of surprise at the moment of the explosion . In the second we have pro vided them with fifteen minutes of suspense. The conclusion is that whene ver possible the public must be informed. Except when the surprise is a twist, tha t is, when the unexpecte d ending is, in itself, the hig hlight of the story. While awaiting his time in the arena he falls for Cassia (Emily Browning), the daughter of Pompeii’s leader Severus (Jared Harris). Unfortunately she is desired by none other than the psychotic Corvus who will stop at nothing to get his way…. Nope, not going to say the T word, I’m NOT…!!!! Taking up a good hour of the movie all of this routine storytelling turns out to be entirely predictable and unconnected to what is about to take place. There is nothing truly insightful about the possible goings on in Pompeii at the time or in how human nature handles those situations. I’m sure they would have experienced smaller eruptions before, even in the people of Pompeii’s history, I think the only reference to the mountain is ‘the mountain she speaks’ or something like that before it finally says F you lot and blows it’s top. When the eruption finally hits it is pretty disappointing, the CGI is pretty bad and is probably the least believable I’ve seen in a while. I’m guessing if we actually cared about what was going on with the characters we wouldn’t really notice it but I feel like I’m watching this movie from the eyes of the guys that checks your hire car when you take it back, he’s got nothing else to interest him apart from those tiny wee scratches you might have somehow got on his lovely new car. When we think the frozen in time inhabitants of real Pompeii I actually think they have more life in them than the characters on the screen, movie wise not a good one I’m afraid but if you have nothing else to do on a slow Sunday afternoon I guess you could give it a whirl but don’t expect too much. ivergent is set in the not-too-distant future where a dystopian society has split its citizens into different groups according to specialities that will benefit the society as a whole. All this has occulted as an attempt by the societal leaders to keep the peace amongst citizens after a great war. Amongst all of this, one girl (who is a little different than all the other people) will fight to

change everything and set right the injustice done to the people. No, this isn’t ‘The Hunger Games’ but it might as well be.

‘Divergent’, like ‘The Hunger Games’, is a Hollywood adaptation of a trilogy of books written for young adults that will inevitably have its final book split into two movies for no other reason than to make as much money out of a fad as possible. In its most basic form, the story follows similar themes to many dystopian stories, including ‘The Hunger Games’. At age 16 all citizens take a serum-induced aptitude test to

RGENT determine which of the 5 factions they would be best suited to based on their personalities. There’s Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the truthful), Erudite (the intelligent) and Dauntless (the brave). 95% of applicants do not leave their factions and can stay with their families. However there are some who test positive for a different faction and can leave their home faction to join their new one. The test results aren’t law, as applicants can still choose which faction to belong to regardless of their test results, but once their choice is made it can’t be altered under any circumstances. If you fail your new faction or you want to leave, toy will become factionless – an outcast from society with no real home. Our heroine (played by Shailene Woodley, who has been styled to look like JUNE 2014 - issue (39)

a cross between Lindsay Lohan pre-drugs and Jennifer Lawrence) is found by the test to be a “divergent”. She is told to keep this information a secret and just choose a faction because the societal leaders hunt down and kill divergents because they think differently to other citizens and therefore pose a threat to society. So Katniss, sorry I mean Triss, must stay undercover from both societal leaders and her new faction family all whilst trying to survive her new factions training régime and not end up factionless. There’s also the predictable and expected love-interest sub-plot between Triss and Four (Theo James) which lacks originality, depth and tension completely and doesn’t even hold a candle to other romances in PAGE 79

teen movies. It’s very obviously only there to maximize ticket sales to teen girls whilst retaining all the subtlety of a brick to the back of the head. It could have been so much more too, but instead, Hollywood got lazy with it and gave a colour-bynumbers way of developing a relationship. In fact the whole film is rather clumsy and rushed. It’s almost as if the filmmakers made it as fast as possible so that it could ride the coattails of ‘The Hunger Games’. I think that if they’d have just slowed down and taken their time then ‘Divergent’ could have, and would have, been a much better film and been truer to the book. I say this because the books are (as young adult fiction goes) pretty good and aren’t as Hunger Games-y as the first film has been. In fact the Divergent film and book are very different to each other. Now I know that whenever anything gets adapted into another form of media there will be some discrepancies along the way, especially when it comes to turning books into films. It’s near impossible to convert a book intro a 2 or even 3 hour film with 100% accuracy, but (for the most part) fans are usually satisfied. But Divergent is a horse of a different colour. Allow me to elaborate. Imagine the Divergent book and film are two humans. You’d expect there to be some small, minor differences between the two; the book may have brown eyes and wear a red shirt and the film might have blue eyes and a green shirt and that would be about it. But in this case, the humans aren’t even the same age, gender or race – they couldn’t be more different, it’s only the absolute basics of the storyline that has remained (the skeleton and muscles in the human representation). But Veronica Roth (the author of the books) put her name to the film so she’s either happy with it or the monetary settlement was very agreeable. The pacing of the film is pretty off too. It’s rather slow to start and in an attempt to hide this there is music that is disproportionately epic to the “action” happening on screen peppered throughout the movie. These “action scenes” are often little more than a light jog, and the music certainly doesn’t match the exploits on screen most of the time. There is also very little backstory or explanation of anything throughout the entire plot. Wikipedia pages will certainly get more hits after viewings of this movie, because it’s the only real way of understanding what’s going on (for those who haven’t read the books). There’s also some (but not a huge amount of) cringe worthy acting from several members of the cast, but this is a teen-indulging movie and isn’t going to be high on the Oscar-potentials list, so we can overlook that. But with all being said and done, Divergent isn’t a bad film per se, if you take it for what it is which is a tween/teen fantasy film with a female lead for girls to aspire to and guys to lust over and a gymjunkie piece of eye-candy for the girls to lust after and guys to aspire to. In fact, Divergent is an alright movie, and would probably be perceived better if you haven’t seen ‘The Hunger Games’ – but who hasn’t seen ‘The Hunger Games’? sually when the Western film world takes an Eastern film and remakes it, they absolutely butcher it and turn it into a caricature of the original. There are sadly many cases of this, but perhaps the most recent one is ‘Oldboy’. There have been a couple of semi-successful remakes, such as ‘The Grudge’ and ‘The Ring’, and now ’13 Sins’ can be added to the list. ’13 Sins’ is a remake of the Thai film ‘13: Game of Death’/ ’13 Beloved’ (depending on what you know it as) and it has done the opposite of what Western remakes usually do: it toned everything down. Usually, what ruins Western remakes is the dialling-up-to-11 that usually happens; for example, if there was some minimal yet effective gore in an Eastern original, then the Western remake would be chock-full of gore, if there was a chilling air of suspense in the Eastern original, then the Western remake would ham it up so bad it would be laughable. But ‘13 Sins’ is a little different. The general story is the same; a broke, down-on-his-luck protagonist is struggling for money to support those who rely on him and to begin to climb the mountain of debt he is in loses his job and becomes desperate. Then one day, he gets a phone call from a mysterious someone, and is told that if he plays a game and wins, he will earn a truly life-changing sum of money, but if he declines he will win nothing. He is also told that should he begin the game, but quit later on, he will lose all earnings he made during the game. Naturally, he accepts and when the first two seemingly menial challenges prove to have a very real financial reward, he further continues with the game and accepts challenge after challenge. The challenges quickly become more and more seedy, illegal and dangerous, not only for the protagonist, but everyone around him.

The whole story (certainly in the Western remake) is about how far someone’s morality can be pushed through the promise of financial freedom, and how much their personality can transform through the desperate need to complete the challenges. There is a huge undertone and theme that explores the relationship between the super-wealthy 1% and how much control and power they have over the remaining 99%. For a remake, this is pretty good. Granted, it’s a little boring for the first 20 minutes or so, but it is definitely worth pushing through till the end. It has the right amount of suspense and the plot twist (although pretty guessable around challenge 11 and 12) is very good. The best thing about the plot is that it gives the viewers all the information that they need to “solve the puzzle” in Act 1, but they won’t realise they have it until half way through Act 3. The cast was great, Mark Webber played a very convincing protagonist and his handling of the transformation was brilliant. Of course Ron Perlman is fantastic in everything he’s in, so enough said there. The production value was, at time, frustratingly low. The sets, costumes and even the cinematography was lacking in several scenes and there were moments where it felt pretty student-filmy. That being said, this film had a huge potential to go overboard the way that most Western remakes do, but (for the most part) restrained itself – now whether or not this was due to budget restraints or self-restraint on the directors part I don’t know, but the overall film is better for whichever restraint hindered it from going over-the-top. That being said, there were a couple of scenes that were handled poorly and in a typically Western-remake manner. The most prolific of which involved blood and a saw and could have taken a lesson from the less-is-more chapter in filmmaking guides. Although the Western remake is much less graphic than its Thai predecessor, this gory scene (and the other big one) seems so out of place given the tone and feel of the rest of the film. It’s almost laughable, and I don’t think that was intentional. The other big criticism I have of this film is it’s ending, and I don’t mean the Act 3 twist, I mean the final 2 minutes. There was a great opportunity for the filmmakers to leave the film on a suspenseful cliff-hanger that would never be answered for definite, it would manifest into fan arguments and speculation as to what actually happened next. However, the film decided to use a red herring and give a happy ending, which really didn’t fit the movie at all. It would have been far more effective to leave it ambiguous. Despite this, ‘13 Sins’ is definitely worth a watch. I wouldn’t buy it, but I’d certainly give it a click on Netflix. It’s got elements of psychological thriller and horror mixed in with good plot twists and good acting. This is without doubt one of those films where the pros outweigh the cons and is an even rarer example of a pretty good Western remake of an Eastern film – especially for the horror/thriller genre.

o, it’s that time of year again and it’s back… that’s right, seems as if it was only yesterday that they were crowning their celebrity champion but Big Brother 2014, or BB15 if you want to call it that, is upon us and action from the house kicks off on Thursday 5th June when a new bunch of wannabies make their way down the infamous ramp, up the stairs and through the door to their dreams…

It is without challenge that for most people entering BB it has become nothing more than a ‘foot in the door’, a means to an end to get to where they want to be, Be it TV, Music or for some just plain old infamy, famous for nothing more than being themselves. No talent… just clowns really…, Chanelle Hayes, Narinder Kaur, Nadia Almada, Victor Ebuwa, Michelle Bass to name but a few and of course screeching Nikki Grahame and ultimate clown Jade Goody… RIP, well RIP them all really. Initially billed as a social/tv experiment type program it quickly lost its way and BB producers have more often than not been too rigid to provide anything really ‘experimental’, sure there are glimpses now and again of interesting scenarios but in the main BB’s meddling have been detrimental to the show on a whole, a trend that has continued even after the show moved from CH4 to CH5. It has recently gone too far and producers have meddled in some of the fundamental rules of BB to suit themselves, the biggest being in nominations and evictions. These two elements should never be tampered with you should ALWAYS vote in secret and if your unlucky enough to get evicted you STAY evicted. These areas need to stay constant and remain in a handful of fundamentals not to be changed at a producer’s whim. I’ll give Channel 5 their due and say that things haven’t been bad under their watch and the past 2 seasons have been pretty ok, just nothing spectacular and my fav seasons still remain some of the older ones, with my all-time best ever season still being BB3 (the one with the divide) with BB5 (the one with the first bedsit) a very close second.

To be honest I still see it as being very much a social experiment, yeh it falters when there are too many surface wannabies, but each season there is usually something to keep me glued. That is until all the ones I like/respect are gone… I usually stop watching then ;-) So what’s missing, where have things went wrong? Well in my opinion… LIVE FEED – self-explanatory really, bb fans want as much as possible during the season A PROPER PSYCHO SUNDAY EPISODE - featured a group of proper psychologists discussing the events of the week in the house (I know they have a silly one which I’m going to checkout this year) NO BIG BROTHER LITTLE BROTHER - why not? Worked perfectly as an early evening catch-up THE LACK OF A DECENT BBBOTS PRESENTER, I stopped watching when Rylan started BB INTERFERENCE – too much guys, in tasks, parties, noms, evictions… give it up man. KEEPING CONSTANT RULE BREAKERS IN – but hammering anyone even remotely mentioning anything ‘racist/sexist’, even when used in context, BB want to use it out of context. PICKING TOO EXTREME CONTESTANTS to begin with – sometime I’m dumbstruck by the shallowness and how over the top the majority of the people put in are, there are real people out there that create far better shows than the freak shows that are usually on offer…. WHY ARE GIRLS ALWAYS OUT FIRST? Let’s have an all-male show for a week so this curse is broken once and for all. A PRESENTER WHO DOESN’T PUSSY FOOT AROUND EVICTEES - some of them should get ripped to shreds for wht they do, invariiably they get of far too lightly. DVDREVIEWS people potentially involved in the action and it will keep you guessing all the way to the finale. It’s not a classic but hopefully it clicks and the man himself realises the stuff he should say NO to.

hen you look at the Liam Neeson career it looked to be heading for a lengthy high-brow collection of dramas that any Shakespearian trained thespian would be proud of, with Schindler’s List, Rob Roy and Les Misérables among others. Then something happened and there seems to be a more dumbed down, explosion over content approach to the movies the Irishman takes on these days. With a movie scene choc a bloc with familiar ‘action hero’ types I can’t understand this route. 2008’s Taken and Unknown were OK but for the most part it’s been a mediocre conveyor belt of pointless performances. The A-Team, Clash Of The Titans, Battleship, The Grey and worst of all Wrath Of The Titans have all left me pretty empty with regards to good things to say. With Non-Stop Neeson hits on a pretty good one for a change as there is much less balls out action, replaced with a good dose of tension as our hero Bill Marks, an air marshal assigned to a New York to London flight has to cope with a blackmail scenario on board after getting a text message on secured mobile phone line where someone threatens to kill a passenger every 20 minutes unless $150 million is transferred into a supplied bank account. Set entirely on board the plane it does make for a refreshing and gripping action thriller. From the off your probably thinking, “ok there is probably only a couple of ways you could kill someone on a plane”, well trust me it isn’t how you are thinking. Along our journey a number of passengers do end up meeting their maker and we are relying on Bill to put all the pieces together and find the killer onboard. Throughout watching we all had our opinions on who was involved and we were invariably wrong in so many of them. Non-Stop will hold your attention for longer than a lot of Neeson’s recent stuff and there is a lot going on and a lot of Mr Suit GoGuide Magazine Contributor

he Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug continues the unexpected adventures of Bilbo Baggins’ and the band of dwarves as they trek to the Lonely Mountain to kill a dragon and allow the dwarf King Thorin to reclaim his ancestral throne.

Also thrown in are numerous side plots. Some like Gandalf uncovering the return of Sauron are mildly interesting but poorly executed. Others like the pointless romance between the new for the film female elf warrior Tauriel and random dwarf number five, Kili, are just boring. The film has two main interlinked problems. Firstly, everything is CGI. There were barely any real sets for this film. As such unlike in Lords of the Rings none of the landscapes are impressive and the action scenes look like video game trailers that have been directed by George Lucas. You try to focus on the main action but it is slightly blurry and there are five different things happening in the background. Secondly, the special effects make you realise how fake the characters are. Just as they don’t look real on the screen you realise that you don’t care about any of them anyway. Smaug could incinerate them all to dust and I would not have been bothered at all. In fact I would have cheered. The third act arrival of the Benedict Cumberbath voiced Smaug does improve the film but comes too late to save it. Smaug is genuinely menacing and looks fantastic. If only the rest of the CGI was half as good. I wanted to enjoy the Hobbit but I just couldn’t. Bad CGI, poor plot and dull characters are movie poison.

epo! The Genetic Opera is the manifestation of the imaginations of creators Terrance Zdunich and Darren Lynn Bousman and is often referred to as what the result would be if The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Blade Runner had a baby.

It’s full of catchy songs, brilliant visuals and it perfectly combines horror, gore, sex and drama for one hell of an experience! Set in the not-too-distant future where plastic surgery is as common as changing clothes, organ repossessions are made legal and if you don’t keep up your payments, the Repo man will come for you. Underlying family drama and fantastic characters are brought to life by great actors and interesting vocals. Don’t be put off when you see Paris Hilton – she actually doesn’t ruin the movie. I was sceptical at first, but heard that she was only allowed the part if she took the character of Amber Sweet seriously and didn’t play her as a ‘Paris Hilton’ character. Repo!

Spit on Your Grave is a remake of a 70’s raperevenge film, WAIT keep reading! I know it’s a remake, but this one is really good. It’s one of the golden few that manage to reinvent the film and story for a new generation whilst still being respectful of the source material. Methods of revenge may differ in this remake, but they are every bit as satisfying as their predecessors. Jennifer Hills escapes to an isolated cabin in the middle of nowhere for a month or two to work on her novel, but over the course of a night and a day she is brutally raped and attacked by a group of men. After fighting for her life, she escapes and picks off her attackers one by one. This is definitely worth a watch and, dare I say it, better than the original.

The Genetic Opera is now one of my favourite films and you’re missing out on a great film if you haven’t seen it yet!

lease forgive how hipster I’m about to sound, but I’ll be very surprised if anyone else has heard of this film because it’s a Korean drama/comedy that’s based on a Japanese manga of the same name. That being said, it’s brilliant. It follows 4 cute young men who all work in an upscale and fancy bakery whose unique theme is antique tableware.

The drama and comedy elements are in the interpersonal relationships of the characters. When the owner (a rich young man who hates cake, and only opened up a cake shop to meet women) hires his pastry chef, he has no idea that he is the same man that he humiliated in high school for having a crush on him. The other two characters also have their quirks, one being an exboxer who is in total admiration of the chef for his abilities, and a bodyguard who is completely scatter-brained. Even if you aren’t that keen on subtitled movies, you won’t be sorry you watched this one, unless you speak Korean and French, then you won’t need the subtitles.

k, I’ll admit this straight away. This is not a cinematic masterpiece. In fact it’s probably the furthest thing from it apart from student art films from 20

It’s not shot well, its script is off and sometimes the acting is painful to watch. But this is a movie that was inspired by, written and acted out by Bam Margera and his CKY crew before their Jackass fame. This is very much one of those films for fans of Bam, his crew and the Jackass franchise in general. That was the only reason I bought and watched it, and if you’re a real fan of the Jackass style of entertainment, then you’ll love this. As is always the case with anything from the Jackass boys, the special features are just as worth watching as the feature film itself. It’s crap, but it’s so crap it’s good.

n some ways inFamous: Second Son feels like a fresh new start. I was hoping for a fresh new start as I’m not the biggest inFamous fan out there. Being a rebel at heart, you play as Delsin Rowe, whose newfound abilities put him on the naughty list with the DUP, a mercenary group designed to capture likewise individuals with special powers. Rowe’s power is rare and allows him to absorb new abilities from other conduits (those with powers). When a few dangerous conduits escape from a prison bus this leaves the DUP to lockdown Seattle, while Delsin and his brother Reggie are in a desperate search for a power that could save their injured people. Graphics is where Second Son’s exceeds. Gaining benefits from impressive facial animation with expressive details communicating annoyance, frustration, relief and so much more through subtle non-verbal cues. The portrayal of Seattle is remarkably stunning, shown off best by nextgen hardware, with sharp textures, long draw distances, and abundant particle effects. The time and weather also shifts in accordance with the story, which helps gives the city a different mood. Not much has changed control wise from previous inFamous games quickly makes fans feel comfortable controlling Second Son, but Delsin’s moves are just really a different coated palate compared to Cole’s lightning. Instead of lighting, it’s smoke. The cover system has been given the boot with mobility now your primary defence. Traversing the environment is simpler and faster as powers quickly launch you to the rooftops, removing the need for wall jumping up a building.

At the start, the smoke dash is your only ability, but as you find core relays throughout the game, you unlock more abilities to add to your arsenal. To upgrade your abilities, you can hunt blast shards. Upgrades boost efficiency, but the most major ones change the tone of your abilities based on karma rating. By progressing through the story you will gain new powers, one of them being ‘neon’, that offers a different move set and more upgrades. Each of the powers you gain seems to not only change the combat in the game but some are additionally more useful than others to traverse through city. Having ‘Good’ karma, you pretty much gain non-lethal ways to take down your enemies with a more subtle approach. ‘Evil’ karma provides a more brutal path. You can execute a vicious dashing melee attack or shoot a charged shot that turns enemies into a pile of ash. Your Super Karmic attacks requires you to fill you karma meter but each moral path has different ways to filling it, with evil needing you to quickly kill in succession while good allows you to fill your meter more patiently by performing good deeds, such as helping citizens or not killing people. There are also plenty of karmic opportunities around the city. Like all inFamous games you have to be Good or Evil right at the start of the game, being caught in the middle doesn’t get you the benefits of karma powers. Most significant are the major choices you make in the story, not only do they alter the tone the story takes, but sometimes providing alternate missions based on your choice. So there’s always the option of replaying the game to see how the opposite decisions would have played out. Sadly the majority of the content outside of the main story isn’t all that appealing. With the map being split into various districts, clearing them of DUP presence by attacking bases, finding audio logs and identifying undercover agents. With pretty simple objectives and a lot of districts to clear, it can all end up feeling a tad repetitive. What’s missing from inFamous is the immersion, actually, it’s been lacking immersion since inFamous 2 and for me it’s really a game breaker. For example, there’s a mission were you chase a conduit that has the same power as you, although this person can dash from building to building while you are left performing short burst dashes, to then glide, to ultimately fail and then jump your way up the building. The guy your chasing could be in L.A. by the time it takes me to catch up to him, and I’m left shouting “WHY CAN’T I DO THAT”. You never, ever feel like super hero. Any moments when you jump into a group of bad guys generally end up with you running for cover and resorting to shooting from a distance, or annoyingly searching for a power source so you can at least fight back. There’s never a sense of strength or bravery. But InFamous: Second Son is visually impressive and it does utilize the PS4’s dualshock controller best, but with its repetitive nature, lack of immersion the beautiful created city of Seattle feels a bit empty and in need of a true hero. here is no nostalgia when it comes to Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, this game is far more open and flexible than ever before. Ever since 1998, David Hayter has been the voice of Snake, bringing the character to life with snake’s legendary voice, the switch to Kiefer Sutherland symbolises Kojima’s impulse for change, plus Sutherland also fits the role very well.

Apart from the intro and ending, there aren’t any cut scenes, the ‘break in gameplay’ codec calls are gone, now radio conversations happen in real time as you explore and uncover new information, keeping the action and tension flowing. Now unless you know the lore of Metal Gear, which for some can be nothing more than an inconvenience, you might have a hard time following the new storyline. Since the story follows the events of Peace Walker, If Paz and Chico are unknown to you; it will dampen the effect of

some moments. There is a nine-page summary that does a good job of trying to get everyone up to speed, but it’s not the same as actually playing Peace Walker. Hidden cassette tapes and other secrets are dotted throughout Camp Omega, the setting for Ground Zeroes, which give background information and help piece everything together. The main mission of the game involves rescuing two hostages, which can be straight forward, but there are some distractions along the way. For example there are other POW’s in the camp and it’s up to you whether you extract them or leave them. They provide the elements of choice that previous games didn’t have but so far (in Grounds Zeroes at least) I haven’t noticed any consequences for not saving them. Ground Zeroes plays better than any Metal Gear game before it so those that don’t have any clue with the story will still have a great time. Snake now has enhanced mobility with some additions like sprinting, diving into prone, and firing from behind when you do get spotted. With past games, a loud, lethal approach naturally never felt right but here it’s a bonus on top of an exceptional, stealth-focused game, which is more challenging this time

GAMING REVIEW around thanks to smarter AI’s. Instead of enemies having limited and an obvious cone of vision, enemies can now spot you from substantial distances if you’re out in the open. Instead of the game immediately triggering an alert state instantly when you’re spotted, time will now slow down to give Snake a chance to react. If you take down the enemy that found you, they won’t alarm anyone else. To begin with, it feels cheap, but it won’t be long to appreciate since the flow of the game actually improves, and especially on the higher difficulty levels. It eliminates the sometimes tedious process of running and hiding just because a single enemy happened to spot you, there’s a chance to correct small errors, and it fits game well. So players won’t end up spending as much time running into cupboards to hide from enemies. It certainly makes stealth a good bit easier, but recklessness has its consequences. Enemies that spot you from far away are hard to take out, even with the slow motion. Interrogations are a new addition to Metal Gear. With the CQC manoeuvres you can grab enemies and make them talk to reveal Intel like the location of a hostage and item locations. Unlockable side missions will be available after completing the main mission and do a nice job of mixing up your play style. It all takes place in the area but each mission takes part during different parts of the day to show of the new Fox Engine. Not only are the graphics outstanding but Ground Zeroes on a PS4 runs at 1080p at 60 frames per second with no noticeable drops during gameplay. The lighting is super impressive, especially at night, with the numerous lightbeams scattered throughout the base casting convincing shadows. There’s been worry that Ground Zeroes was only going to exist to test the faithful. With it being leaked that the game has only a 2 hour main mission, and I can confirm that it actually only took me an hour and a half to complete the main mission, including cut scenes. So it could be said that Ground Zeroes is just merely a demo that you’re paying for. Which is true to an extent, but I can understand why Kojima would want to make a demo in the first place. Ground Zeroes is much more bolder than previous Metal Gear games in the series, and for the better, much has changed including the UI and the layout of pretty much everything has been improved or completely changed, and there is more to do than just the acclaimed 2-hour campaign. Overall, there’s still stimulating stealth and an attention to detail that’s rarely seen in games today, but all of it is smoother and updated. This may only be a taste of what’s to come and Ground Zeroes quickly sets the stage for something much bigger still to come… mainly it shows us that the Metal Gear franchise is definitely heading in the right direction. ith each new Dynasty Warrior game KOEI do try to improve on the ‘been there done that’ regime, and so far Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition on the PlayStation 4 does its best to bring the hacking mayhem to the next-gen. With Dynasty Warriors 8 the fighting mechanics were overhauled and a focused on switching between two weapons in order to mix up your play style was introduced. They have kept the previously implemented rockpaper-scissor from Dynasty Warriors 8 which means you can still devastate opponents who are unlucky enough to be holding a weapon that sports a weakness to your own.

While cutting down the opposition without breaking a sweat on the lower difficulty settings, playing on normal or higher requires a bit more tactics as you keep an eye on your enemy’s movements and reacting accordingly. One issue that I’ve always felt the series had is that of coming across major characters from history in combat, it never quite seems to hold the immersion that I thought they should have. With an increased level cap and a whole host of powerful weapons, it won’t be long before you’re mowing anyone and anything that dares to stand in your way, and this is usually the point where you decide to crank up the game’s difficulty. Attempting hard, very hard, chaos or the newly added ultimate difficulty setting requires a lot more skill. Knowing how best to use your favourite character’s special attacks and being proficient at utilising their equipped move set is key to survival. There’s a little bit of a learning curve this time around, but building up your favourite warriors and then using them to demolish stronger oppositions that would previously

have soaked up damage, leaves you with a satisfying sense of empowerment. Having over 80 playable warriors and therefore 80+ weapon types, so I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a few fighters that’ll tickle your fancy, be it because of their elegant designs and detail or their effective move sets. There is something for everyone. Every officer now has two ex attacks, which are only performed when they’re equipped with their favourite weapon, along with three unique musou moves. The variety of offensive abilities on offer ensures that slashing through masses of soldiers feels fresh. Despite the inclusion of new characters, stages, weapons and modes, the game’s graphics is sure to be its biggest talking point. With the PS4 addition being a visual upgrade from the PS3 game, it’s certainly no match when it comes to the likes of inFAMOUS: Second Son, but it’s without doubt

impressive and the best that Dynasty Warriors has ever had. The lighting has been improved, with sun rays washing many battlefields in a warm glow, and the smaller details found on officer’s clothing are something’s to appreciate. A stronger depth of field adds a much more atmospheric visual style. It also helps to obscure the rather poor texture work that you’ll sometimes find on rocks and buildings. There are instances where the frame rate will drop from slight, too very noticeable during enormous fights, they’re far more forgivable because of just how many troops the game can render on screen at any one time, there is still a feeling that maybe they could have pushed for a few more but you’ll still be able to witness soldiers that are fighting in the distance. It finally seems that Dynasty Warriors isn’t far from delivering battlefields that look and feel alive with the power of next-gen. Dynasty Warriors is also starting to take a more cinematic approach to its story on the three kingdoms era, but at the same time they are neglecting the actual gameplay in this direction. So you would eradicate hundreds of troops with hardly any effort or hacking away at an officer’s health bar during the gameplay, but in a cut scene, main characters can be killed off by one swing of a sword or by a single arrow. They apparently are fairly accurate portrayals from recorded sources but it does conflict with the games ridiculously over-the-top nature. It conflicts even in the gameplay when you’re forced to follow objectives that ultimately lead to an ambush or in fact involve you preparing for an ambush when you could easily wipe-out the position without these objectives, but hey that’s history for you. They do try to compensate with a moral meter where the more of colour dominates the meter the more efficient your troops perform. But for example, part of one scenario sees you forced to retreat and literally hundreds of enemy troops swarmed onto your position, after eventually dispatching all of them I was still forced to retreat even though there were no more enemies to stop me from getting to the leader. You can put up with the voiceovers but the series is never going to be truly captivating when the lines of dialogue are so awkwardly performed in order to sync with the character’s cheesy animations. One more issue I’ve began to notice is there is far too much going on with the screen, there’s already the image of the character, the health bar, K.O. count and the map which all together can take up quite a lot of the screen, then add the dialogue that appears whenever an officer talks and window that appears whenever you have collected to much weapons and that’s pretty much the whole screen taken. An option to turn off, or close parts of the HUD would be very much appreciated. But without question this is the largest, best looking, and most refined game in the series, Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition is an absolute must buy for fans, while newcomers will find themselves hacking and smashing their way through the map at any opportune time. Even though the franchise will have to grind some issues away, it proves that were getting closer to a more robust and enjoyable game.

ebel Without a Cause is a 1955 American drama film about emotionally confused suburban, middle-class teenagers. Directed by Nicholas Ray, it offered both social commentary and an alternative to previous films depicting delinquents in urban slum environments. Over the years, the film has achieved landmark status for the acting of cultural icon James Dean, fresh from his Academy Award nominated role in East of Eden and who died before the film’s release, in his most celebrated role. This was the only film during Dean’s lifetime in which he received top billing. In 1990, Rebel Without a Cause was added to the preserved films of the United States Library of Congress’s National Film Registry as being deemed “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant”.

The story of a rebellious teenager who arrives at a new high school, meets a girl, disobeys his parents, and defies the local school bullies was a groundbreaking attempt to portray the moral decay of American youth, critique parental style, and explore the differences and conflicts between generations. The title was adopted from psychiatrist Robert M. Lindner’s 1944 book, Rebel Without a Cause: The Hypnoanalysis of a Criminal Psychopath. The film itself, however, does not reference Lindner’s book in any way. Warner Bros. released the film on October 27, 1955, less than one month after Dean died in a fatal car crash. Page 138
