MUSICREVIEW

T

hrough work commitments I’ve never managed to accomplish one of the things I promised myself I would do this year and that is to catch a live performance of ‘Bright Side’, in fact we haven’t even managed to get even a 5 minute chat with the guys at all since their inception... (now that’s shabby: Ed)

I have in the past, and do now, listen to Bright Side quite a lot, being the kind of music I feel closest to these days, from a local perspective anyway. When I first heard them I initially thought that there were too many similarities between them and the guys previous band As Autumn Falls and Behind Hollow Walls, an obvious by-product, and sure initially there was the same vibe and overall sound but i suppose the more you listen the more you hear. Frontman Ali is an amazing screamer, he screams the intro, he screams the verse and for good measure he screams all the other parts as well in varying degrees of intensity that only someone heavily into this melodic screamo punk type stuff will truly understand. So let’s not go into just how much effort it takes to belt out 3 minutes of high powered, in your face, razor sharp passion. That said, it does lend itself to sounding very similar to the passing casual listener. So with this new release what’s has surprised me most is just how fucking good this band are sounding, they have a massive sound, the trademark Ali screams are all there but there is also a definite coolness an swagger about the sound these days… I love em. So with this release on the horizon and some other stuff on the go it’s apt I felt that we jump in with a wee reminder of some awesome Bright Side related stuff happening over the next couple of months.. Firstly the guys have 2 pretty huge live shows coming up which I’m going to tear my hair out to get to. They will be @ none other than King Tut's Wah Wah Hut on Saturday 30th August supporting WECAMEFROMWOLVES and playing alongside Alburn and GoodCopGreatCop, tickets are just under £5 from the links on the guys web site. The bigger show for me is on the 11th October @ Stereo where Page 4

the guys play alongside some top, top bands for STRUGGLEFEST, a showcase for a lot of the Struggletown label artists and a chance to see some awesome touring bands too for just a measly tenner. I really want to make this one. On the subject of gigs though… what I don’t like about Bright Side, and this whole genre in general, is the lack of any local activity from the bands… I know, I know, I hear you say ‘no-where to play’, and the same was true of both As Autumn Falls and Behind Hollow Walls when they were doing the rounds. There just doesn’t seem to be the desire for anyone local to put on any of these shows once Harleys bit the dust. It would be damn nice to see them on our doorstep though? Sh*t why didn’t GoGuide do the Grassroots thing again this year? (That’s another story: Ed) Anyway back to the point. Secondly the boys have their brand new selftitled EP ‘Bright Side’ released at the end of August on the Glasgow based Struggletown Records label. The release will take 2 forms, a regular 4 track EP download OR an amazing 7” vinyl 2 track single (Co-released with Fulltone Records) for those with a turntable,

and featuring opener ‘Wanderer’ and EP finisher ‘The Years’ + a free DL link to the full EP so you get the best of both worlds I’ve checked out the EP on the guy’s bandcamp, where you can stream the whole thing, and like I said above, this is an awesome piece of work and I’m truly impressed with how things are turning out for the guys. Ali’s intensity is there as usual, ripping you a new eardrum as he somehow seems to be screaming right in your face (I listen with headphones), I’m guessing that’s some new-fangled DAW plugin that does that, makes it just seem like he’s 2 inches from your face, yeh… the ‘Ali in Yer Face’ plugin. Moving away from the vocals though I think this is where things have moved on for the guys, I’d stick my neck out and say that this is the hardest and tightest local band I’ve heard in a good while, the sound these 3 make is something quite special, and original as far as I’m concerned, whiles appearing on the surface to be all 100 miles an hour and screaming all the time there is actually some real moments of wonderment sprinkled around these four tracks. Opener Wanderer does exactly that, it wanders into your brain with its simple guitar line and then starts to nonchalantly

AUG 2014 - issue (41)

push you along before it hits full steam ahead and you’re hooked even before it hits the chorus… “We need to fall to carry on”… it ends in a wall of feedback before ‘Breaking Even’ takes over and keep the pace throughout “I won't hold it back” Ali screams and for the most part no one dose, until the break gives you a timely breather and then its foot on the accelerator again. Track 3 ‘Lost Love’ again enters the arena with a soaring simple repeated guitar line, it then crashes forward to become one of the fastest and punkiest tracks on the EP and probably my favourite… oh, and I think it’s a love song? The last track on the EP is ‘The Years’ which nonchalantly steamrollers over your senses, with driving passion and again another super cool wee guitar break that these guys could well find themselves getting a name for. Over all a fine, fine 4 track offering which simply leaves me wanting more as the last bars fade… a thundering backline, the coolest guitarist around and a frontman screaming in your face. Carling don’t do melodic 2screamo punk EP launches but if they did…???? Mr Suit GoGuide Magazine Contributor

MUSICREVIEW

A

revitalised, rejigged version of, A SHITE STATE OF AFFAIRS have been hitting the scene in recent times which has brought a damn big smile to my face. Metamorphosed into a solid 3 piece (I only ever remember them as a duo) the guys are tearing up the grunge rock metal genre(s) like they were 15 year olds. Ever present Logie, Owen Innes on a Sunday, forms the heart of ASSOA on guitar and Lead vocals with Alan ‘Hef’ Forsyth on bass and Chris Gardner kicking up a shit storm on the kit. These 3 guys are some of the most laid back, nicest and most genuine people you could meet but when it comes to music there is no prisoners, these guys are all about the music. It’s truly about song writing and sound with the trio who have all had their fair share of bands before this one and who most still play in other bands to feed their lust for hot sweaty rehearsal rooms, studios and stages. The debut album is hoped to be out sometime in the next few months and knowing Logie and Hef this might drag on until Christmas? But hey, what a stocking filler that would be. With their gringy onslaught they’re quoted on their facebook page saying that “Your ears will hurt. If they don’t then we have not done our job properly.” And you know what? That might never have been more true than with ASSOA. It’s going to be loud it’s going to be crushing but it’s going to awesome. We’ll hopefully catch up with the guys in the near future but for now if you interested in some old school down and dirty grunge and are into Nirvana, Mastodon, Helmet, Aereogramme, Take A Worm For A Walk Week, to name but a few, then get mentally prepared for that album and get yourself along to see the guys LIVE whenever you can… when are they playing you say? Well funny you should ask…. 1st of August @ The Dreadnought, Bathgate with Penfold, The Extracts and the following night 2nd of August @ Opium in Edinburgh supporting Phantom Riffage. 5 SIGNS YOU ARE TOO UNHEALTHY ONE

You pick up more than your fair share of colds? If you seem to be more prone to picking up colds it may indicate that you need to boost your immune system or there may be some kind of issue with it. You may be lacking in Vitamin C or there could even be a virus attacking it that you are unaware of, so get a blood test carried out that can check if there is anything to be concerned about and try to improve your general health to give it that natural boost.

TWO

Your skin acts up all the time? If you find that you develop acne, eczema, or any other skin disorder on a regular basis then it can mean more than you are simply not taking care of the skin or using the correct products. Instead, it could be the result of an allergic reaction or it may be your body telling you that it is stressed and needs you to slow down. Your skin is the biggest single organ in your body, so listen to what it is telling you as your body often uses it to put out a cry for help and it offers up signs that all is not well and you are not as healthy as you thought you were.

THREE

You are not sleeping like normal? If you find that your sleep pattern is disturbed and you are suffering from some form of insomnia it does tend to point towards your body and mind being too stressed. When we sleep, our body is supposed to lower the amount of cortisol coursing through it, but when we are stressed this does not happen and we are thrown out of sync. When this happens our body struggles to repair itself and recharge its batteries leading to us gradually being run down and when this happens we can pick up all kinds of illnesses due to our immune system not operating at full capacity.

FOUR

You are tired, but sleep enough? If you are getting more than enough sleep, but still find that you are tired in the afternoon, then it may indicate that there is a problem with your thyroid. The problem here is that your adrenal glands are being exhausted leading to your body using up all of its energy early on without it being replaced in the proper manner. This problem can then lead to your body being run down as it is working so hard trying to protect you from the different kinds of toxins that you can pick up during the day from the environment as well as things you are doing. When this happens it leaves you open to other potential health problems, so get your thyroid checked.

FIVE

You are not as tall as you used to be? This may sound strange, but as we get older there is a tendency for us to shrink, but the rate at which this happens can indicate that there is some kind of issue with our bones and in particular with us developing osteoporosis. The problem with this bone disease is that it then means we are more likely to fracture a bone when we fall or develop curvature of the spine, so early diagnosis will allow you to make changes to your diet that can stop it from progressively getting worse. NUMBER 1 EARNER LIONEL MESSI

1: REAL MADRID

€518.9m annual revenue For the ninth year in a row Real Madrid are top of the big dogs. Even though the 2012/13 season brought nothing to the trophy cabinet, Real somehow keep getting bigger financially, a fact borne out by their spending power outlaying close to £145m, most of which went on their reported £80m to capture the signature of Welsh wonder Gareth Bale in the summer 2013.

2: BARCELONA

€482.6m annual revenue Despite being hit with a slight fall in revenue The Catalans again showed their richer friends how to do things in terms of on the pitch, even regaining the La Liga title from them. So an honourable (well maybe not that honourable?) second place goes to Barcelona with almost half-a-billion Euros raked in over the the 2012/13 season.

TOP 5 HIGHEST PAID FOOTBALLERS IN 2014 ONE - LIONEL MESSI Barcelona - €41m

The Barcelona number 10 is the greatest playmaker of them all. Should he manage to retain his blistering form for the rest of his playing days Messi will certainly go down as one, if not ‘the’ greatest footballer of all time. Earning a staggering €41m annually the wee Argentinian has so far only missed out one accolade, a World Cup winners medal.

TWO - CRISTIANO RONALDO Real Madrid - €39.5m

Sometimes you run out of words trying to describe this man, only finishing in 2nd place to a possible living legend. Evan winning the Ballon d’Or and his 40+ goals last season couldn’t boost Ronaldo enough to reach the top spot.

THREE - NEYMAR Barcelona - €29m

There’s something about Neymar that I don’t like, and thus I was happy to see Brazil crash out of

AUG 2014 - issue (41)

3: BAYERN MUNICH

€431.2m annual revenue The Bundesliga’s growth and exposure continues and Bayern’s success on the pitch has seen the Bavarians overtake Man United to become our third richest team. With a reputed 55% of Bayern’s revenue generated solely through their commercial activities.

4: MANCHESTER UNITED €423.8m annual revenue

With a horrendous season past United are truly suffering on the pitch lately, helping to buffer their failures with their success last time round still saw them pulling in €423.8m for the 2012/13 season. Things don’t look like improving as they prepare to rebuild from scratch with their second manager in as many seasons so perhaps even with their handful of brand new commercial partners their monetary decline may get worse before it gets better as they stare another potentially trophyless season ahead.

doyourpart.com

THE WORLD’S TOP 5 RICHEST FOOTBALL CLUBS FOR 2014

5: PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN €398.8m annual revenue

Having raked in the highest ever commercial revenue for a season with some €254.7m France’s only team in the top 20 the PSG rise to the top doesn’t look like faltering.

the world cup. His transfer to Barcelona raised a lot of questions and shouts of corruption but hey wats new in football? Barca didn’t quite tell the whole truth over where their fees were going and what measures they were using to avoid paying taxes. This may have been the reason Neymars form may have suffered. Reputed to be the greatest youngster in football at the moment.

FOUR - WAYNE ROONEY

Manchester United - €24m When Wayne Rooney completed his second U-turn in his United career and signed a new £300,000 a week contract to stay at Old Trafford there was a lot of unhappy people out there. It made him the only Englishman on this list. Some say Rooney is crucial to United and other would be happy to see the back of him but no one could argue that he has the potential to shine in these challenging times for the team where he looks set to be named captain for the coming season.

FIVE - ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC Paris Saint-Germain - €23.5m

Coming fifth on the list is Zlatan Ibrahimovic the domineering Swedish striker is in the best form of his life having smashed an awesome 40+ goals for PSG in the past season. At an elderly 32, Zlatan is testament to the fact that some players just get better with age, his wages obviously confirms that fact.

5 WAYS YOUR TAIL-WAGGING DOG TRIES TO TELL YOU STUFF 2

BARING TEETH

chefjancris @ flickr

Perhaps the most important thing that you should know about dogs is what it means when they bare their teeth. It means that the dog is ready to bite and this is when you should either step aside or run. If you see that lip curling back, a natural reflex that protects the lips in the attack, just act calmly and leave.

EAR POSITION Indicating the level of attention, ear position is also very important when it comes to dogs’ communication. Lowered ears indicate a relaxed state with very low level of attention, while ears that are raised indicate that the dog is excited, energetic and fully attentive. Sometimes, you should listen and watch closely what your dog is up to. If he’s listening you should use the state of his mind to teach him something new, and reward him afterward. Ears pricked forward or straight up indicate that the dog is fully engaged in play, hunting, or concentration, mostly, having fun. It’s a clear sign of paying attention. This ear position can also show curiosity and express the intent to do something, as the dog is turning to catch sounds. It is an obvious position of the ears in the early stage of a chase. Ears that are positioned against the dog’s head indicate that it feels afraid or threatened.

Page 16

AUG 2014 - issue (41)

4

A WAG THAT SWINGS IN SMALL EXTENSIONS

HEAD MOVEMENT

Although most dogs will go wild with excitement and frantically wag their tails when you come home, some dogs will show a more subtle greeting with a slight wag that swings in small extensions. Such a wag is a slight acknowledgement of “hello” to you or other guests, with the dog just, well, getting on with better things.

If the dog’s head leans to the left and then to the right, it indicates interest or an effort to pinpoint a sound source that the dog finds interesting or threatening. A head raised high indicates interest but also could be a sign of aggression, while lowered head means submission. Never underestimate his attention and make sure you read the signs properly. That’s the only way to teach him you’re his pack leader. He’ll be thankful.

5

EYES AND EYEBROWS Although dogs do not have eyebrows, they have a distinctive ridge above their eyes and some species even have almost human eyebrows. The emotions that they portray are pretty much similar to their human equivalents: raised eyebrows signal interest, lowered suggest mild anger or uncertainty about something in their environment… The dog’s eyes can express as much as human eyes do, and just as you can interpret people’s eye signals, you can also learn to interpret ones of your dog. Wide open eyes, this means that your dog is feeling alert, playful, and ready to have fun.

BIG LITTLE LIES’ Moriarty

When the tap water at the Hale Boarding School for Boys bursts into flames, people blame fracking. Life at Hale has always been fraught—the swim test consists of being thrown into the pool with wrists and ankles tied, and a boy can be expelled if he and a girl keep fewer than “three feet on the floor.” But the sight of combustible drinking water and the possibility that fracking is making Hale kids sick turn one student into an unlikely hero in the fight to stop the controversial drilling practice.

LIFE AFTER LIFE / Kate Atkinson

Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet . . . So begins the story of this exquisite debut novel, about a Chinese American family living in 1970s smalltown Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee; their middle daughter, a girl who inherited her mother’s bright blue eyes and her father’s jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue—in Marilyn’s case that her daughter become a doctor rather than a homemaker, in James’s case that Lydia be popular at school, a girl with a busy social life and the center of every party.

What if you had the chance to live your life again and again, until you finally got it right?During a snowstorm in England in 1910, a baby is born and dies before she can take her first breath. During a snowstorm in England in 1910, the same baby is born and lives to tell the tale. What if there were second chances? And third chances? In fact an infinite number of chances to live your life? Would you eventually be able to save the world from its own inevitable destiny? And would you even want to?Life After Life follows Ursula Todd as she lives through the turbulent events of the last century again and again. With wit and compassion, she finds warmth even in life’s bleakest moments, and shows an extraordinary ability to evoke the past. Here isKate Atkinson at her most profound and inventive, in a novel that celebrates the best and worst of ourselves.

When Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together tumbles into chaos, forcing them to confront the long-kept secrets that have been slowly pulling them apart.

he benefits of strength training with dumbbell has been well regarded throughout the centuries and has appeared in many different forms and possible origins, but whats the big deal? Why should you be training with dumbbells? In this article you will be learning about some of the many benefits offered by this style of Resistance training, and I will go through two dumbbell Page 26

workouts at the end for you to try during your next workout.

First of all what is a dumbbell? A dumbbell is a single handed bar with either set weight or changeable weights in a similar way to Olympic barbells. The use of single handed weights in strength training dates as far back as ancient Greece where they would hold weight lifting competitions to lift bigger heavier stones than your opponent overhead. There was also use of an english system with a pulley and a rope with a weight on the end for bell ringers to practice their skills and they noticed a huge increase in strength and muscle mass which inspired various pieces of workout equipment found AUG 2014 - issue (41)

in gyms today such as cable machines and the grappler. It’s believed the weight on the end was referred to as a dumb bell because it didn’t make any sound when you rang it and that’s where the name for the modern dumbbell comes from. The first and most obvious benefit of

dumbbell training is the convenience of being able to lift enough weight to stimulate a response in your muscles with minimal equipment and space meaning you can work out at home, in the gym, even in the staff room at work! Just watch out for your bosses coffee mug. You can also easily store some weight plates and dumbbells in the boot of your car or out of the way under the bed without them ever being walked into or used to dry clothes, unlike so many exercise bikes of Christmases past. All that and the dumbbells are fairly cheap to buy although more expensive options also exist you could get a pair of changeable dumbbells and a few weight plates for less than £35 and then as you progress you only need to buy more weights to take your training to the next level making dumbbells one of the most cost effective training methods. But more importantly is how your body will react to training like this (providing you train safely and eat and sleep well). As a personal trainer I believe the key benefit to this form of training is the stabilization effect of each hand being weighted separately at the end of the lever, your arm, unlike using traditional Resistance machines which guide you through the motion and stabilize the weight for you so only your prime movers are really working. This often results in whats referred to as superficial muscle where although you may look muscular you don’t have the developed core strength and the stabilizing muscles around the joints are normally underdeveloped by comparison to using free weights and the result is a significantly weaker body. With regard to some exercises when you use dumbbells activation of these stabilizer muscles is more than double than with the barbell because the weight is not distributed across the bar.that stability is all gone and now your activating and using all the little muscles you never knew you had at the same time as the prime movers just to keep the weight facing the right way, gaining stronger postural and trunk (torso) muscles and an increase in muscle mass and fat loss by developing muscle that was previously not being stressed to the same extent. So if done properly your going to end up with a stronger posture, better balance and a more athletic physique than you could gain using Resistance machines and even the good old barbell to an extent. An important note is to start with lighter weights and do the exercises in the full range of motion. This will benefit you infinitely more than trying to lift weights that are too heavy and doing half reps and risking injury. Basically if you cant perform the exercises without using momentum to get the weight up then it’s too heavy and you need to drop the weight down to do the movements properly using the right muscles.

DUMBBELL WORKOUTS

WORK AS HARD AND AS FAST AS YOU CAN

And now here is the first of my promised dumbbell workouts. This workout will utilize the tabata circuit training method this means 20 seconds of exercise to 10 sesonds of rest for 8 rounds totaling 4 minutes and then 1 minute of rest, rinse then repeat. This type of circuit training is great for cardio conditioning aswell as allowing you to gain muscle mass, burn fat by the ton and develop the stability factor I described previously in this article. In order to get the full use of tabata training you need to work as hard and as fast as you can (while still being safe) within the 20 sesonds working time and try to catch your breathe in the 10 second break.

I

know what you’re going to say but Boyhood has much more than the classic Seven Up TV documentary series has ever portrayed. In case you don’t know Seven Up is a TV series, created by Michael Apted, that chronicles a group of British children as they live their lives, visiting each, well those who still wish to take part, for 7 days every 7 years. So far we’ve reached 56 and it is still going strong. There is no real social issues in Boyhood just an enthralling decade-plus story of a family who grow and have to deal with the more mundane events in their lives, there’s no real life changing events just honest to goodness life in general. There are loads of great movies out there that took ages to make but Boyhood actually did take years to make as it goes, 13 years to be precise. Director Richard Linklater shadowed a group of actors over a 13 year period as an experiment. Brother and sister Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and Samantha (his own daughter Lorelei Linklater) stay with their mom, while Olivia (Patricia Arquette) lives with father Mason Sr., lovingly known as Dad (Ethan Hawke) and pops in now and again. The basic idea being that over the years we are witness to the actor’s development, their roles, their characters, their souls. We have to take this movie as we find it and keep in the back of your mind that these things won’t come along very often as the more ‘instant’ movie making process will always be favoured over a more experimental and challenging route. The main focus of Boyhood is on the Mason’s story over the course of which we see him grows from 5 to 18, we see less of sister Samantha who initially appears as an amusing brat, doing Britney Spears impression, who later enters her glitzy stage with hair to match her outfits, and ends the movie in a more reserved and even secretive kinda persona. There is definitely a connection between Olivia and Mason as we see in occasions like when she confronts him when he comes home a little buzzed on his 15th birthday, which she forgot about by the way, and it helps scenes like this that fact that Arquette and Coltrane actually do look related. Mom Olivia sees herself, stuck with kids, tied down, for Arquette that reserved power and look of solitude seems to come as 2nd nature as she utters lines like, “I was somebody’s daughter, and now I’m somebody’s fucking mother.” She is somehow attracted to all the wrong guys, they seem ok on the surface, but scratch away and they turn out to be train wrecks, marriage material for her being the likes of a semi-schizophrenic psychology professor and a post war Army vet hell bent on spending most of his time running Mason through bootcamp. Boyhood has its fair share of ‘cultural’ colourings with Texan life style at its forefront where you give a boy a 20-gauge shotgun and a Bible for his birthday. But for the most part we have equal parts beauty among the craziness. As we slip through this move you might realise that it has a knack of dragging your own memories back from places maybe long forgotten or of those too fresh to truly recall. Your recalling your own experiences while watching the actors on screen, something that happens in most movies, but Boyhood seem to make them more poignant, not even memories, maybe just the feeling of those memories? I

t took me a while to actually sit down and watch The Purge, last year’s underground summer hit, I’d seen the trailers and it sounder right up my street, but I continually heard from other people that it wasn’t very good. Needless to say I didn’t make the effort to get along and see it in the cinema and held off until just a few weeks ago to see it on DVD. With the decision already made to go see this film looming I thought I’d

Page 48

better check it out just in case the story required it. I’ve reviewed the original film in the DVD section so if you haven’t seen either check that out as well. There is a statement that rings out early on in The Purge: Anarchy that could be blasted across the bows of an awful lot of movies these days… “It’s not about catharsis… it’s about money,” With the smouldering success of the original film you definitely wouldn’t blame the production company for flinging out another offering so quickly when you consider that it raked in a massive 20 times what it cost to AUG 2014 - issue (41)

make at the box office. The % of good movies to bad movies is pretty low for these endeavours but I’m happy to say that the guys at Universal and director/writer James DeMonaco have pulled off a what the Godfather and Back to the Future did in their day and produced a follow-up that is even better that the original. Sure maybe nowhere near as good as those mentioned, but you get my drift. If you haven’t seen the original the basic premise of The Purge is that America has established a 12-hour period, 7pm – 7am, each year where all crime is legal. The Purge one told the story of a family victimised because they offered shelter

story he decides to help our hapless couples throughout the film.

For me The Purge: Anarchy doesn’t just offer itself as an occomplished follow up but surpasses even my expectations (having really enjoyed the first one) and throws it’s hand in the air as a nominee for ‘best mainstream film of the summer.’

Director James DeMonaco does an admirable job at making us question our ‘so called’ fascination with violence with each encounter the group makes. Be they the money fuelled murder parties, organized gang killings or just plain old man in the street killing man in the street. It’s all there and seemingly everyone suffers from this infection, a disease that has been spread and propagated by the country’s most trusted institutes.

In Anarchy we see groups of middle-lowerclass people doing all they can to survive, to make it through the night. When their car breaks down, leaving them stranding a long way from home, Shane (Zach Gilford) and Liz (Kiele Sanchez) struggle not only to stay alive but also with a crumbling relationship.

There is a lot more ‘right to bear arms’ elements around the second film, where the first leaned towards it being a slightly religious tinge to the process, people claim they are acting on the sides of liberty and democracy, although the women on the roof claims it to be ‘Gods Will.’

Eva (Carmen Ejogo) and her daughter Cali (Zoe Soul) soon discover that their home protection leaves them as cannon fodder for the tooled up street gangs and an easy target for her women hating neighbour. Eventually our misfortunates form an alliance with Sergeant (Frank Grillo), a former policeman who likes nothing more than popping off a few rounds to the sound of his roaring muscle car, there’s something naturally violent with Sergeant. But for purposes of the

Anyone looking for character development or true thought provoking ideas or even directorial embellishments might have to look elsewhere as DeMonaco prefers on this occasion to kinda be as subtle as a kick in the balls.

Page 50

Sergeant pretty much is the man of the hour and gives us some pretty convincing screen presence and shows a hint of two sides, morality and ‘I can f*ck you up,’ everyone AUG 2014 - issue (41)

else is really only along for the violent ride. It’s a cool concept having society playing the bad guy, none of those we meet are really any worse than anyone else, it’s truly not their fault that they can do this, those who have them no longer need to fight the urge for violence, they only need to wait. People have looked at these two of DeMonaco’s films and pondered on whether he is “painting a picture of what could be,” or “arguing we’re already there.” Having been witness to an act of attempted murder that went unpunished where a young guy had his throat cut by two hooded males, surrounded by CCTV cameras, outside a busy shopping centre 500 yards from my doorstep… where police seem to have done nothing, and who obviously know nothing more now than what they did when it happened...???? I for one lean towards the viewpoint that sometime it seems we are living in a society where anyone might just conceivably get away with doing anything they want to do with no repercussions… as a society are we really going backwards now? Maybe a purge would be a good thing? Mr Suit GoGuide Magazine Contributor

ick Nevern has starred in a whole bunch of ‘football related violence’ and gangland movies, and written, directed and took the lead role in ‘Terry,’ a ‘re-documentary’ based on Charlie Ruez’s shot college course footage, which was initially seized by Metropolitan Police Department to be used as evidence against the people filmed only to be released a year later.

Nevern has now taken it upon himself to get tooled up with writer Michael Lindley and created spoof movie The Hooligan Factory. I’m not sure if the film is supposed to be a spoof or just a comedy, there are bits that are spoofs, others that are pure comedy and others that are purely lifted from other movies almost verbatim scenes (the tattoo scene from The Firm for instance)… so let’s just call it a ‘Spoo-Com’ and be done with it. Dex (Nevern) is a football hooligan banged up for 30 years back in the 80’s who is then released from prison, hoping to pick up where things left off with his old gang. Danny (Jason Maza), is a dissatisfied layabout who is abandoned when his granddad moved to Australia. After a meeting in an underpass Dex decides to take him under his wing. Danny helps Dex realise his dream of reuniting his firm The Hooligan Factory and takes them to the top of the tree again and one final battle with his biggest rival firm and nemesis The Barron.

Page 56

AUG 2014 - issue (41)

I could understand this film if it was truly funny, offered something new or went down the complete parody road but it doesn’t. As a comedy it needed another year of writing, as a parody it needs to drop all ideas of being a film on its own. There are a couple of truly funny moments which work really well and it’s sad to see that the writers didn’t feel strong enough to use it as a full on opportunity to do something like what Simon Pegg/Edgar Wright did for zombies in Sean of The Dead. It could have been soooo good. Danny is chosen as our eyes and ears in this story, I know it’s a comedy, sorry… spoo-com, but I need something to connect me to the story and using Danny isn’t enough for me, his deadpan looks to camera now and again don’t cut it. And as it’s his idea to bring back the old school violence, to help Dex get back to the feared hooligan he was, to inject hatred back into his bloated firm who haven’t had a rumble in 2 years, even in a comedy it’s hardly an appealing quality that has us rooting for him. Yeh, sure there are parody elements throughout, I haven’t watched everything out there so I could obviously be missing a lot of them but as mentioned there is straight rips from The Firm, I.D and Goodfellas among them. With modern technology it’s only right that things look sleek, cinematic and stylish and all the tricks are there but there are still a lot of things needed to really rescue this film. Two good things to mention are the soundtrack, which is pretty sweet. And Danny Dyre getting his face blasted off after 1 minute 30 seconds on screen... what more could you ask?

lanet of the Apes has one of those storylines that is so classic that practically everyone knows even the basic storyline. The modern remake had a lot of people worried that Hollywood was going to butcher a science-fiction gem, but when Rise of the Planet of the Apes came along in 2011, any worries were quelled. Since that release in 2011 I’ve been excited to see the almost obligatory sequel and then that so-called “controversial” promotion for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes happened during the world cup and excitement really kicked into overdrive. I won’t lie, I held some slight trepidation about the new film because it was still a Hollywood film and it was still a sequel, but it proved to be every bit as good as the first. So if you didn’t like the first film, you won’t like this, but if (like me) you loved the remake, then buckle up because this sequel is a worthy one.

Set 10 years after the first film, Ceasar and his fellow apes seek refuge in the woods outside San Francisco the whole film is about the rising tensions and conflictions between the apes and the humans. Although I feel that the trailer gave away a little too much of the plot, it’s still a great film and is told brilliantly. Perhaps the first, and most obvious, praise I can give this film is the stunning and nothing-short-than-masterful CGI. A common trend in Hollywood films is the misuse, overuse and downright abuse of CGI for everything – relevant or not. But the CGI used in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is truly a work of art. It is never used simply because it’s there, a common Hollywood trap, and the level of detail used is simply stunning. The culmination of the motion-capture talents of Andy Serkis and other motion-capture actors combined with the extreme skill from people in the animation department gives nothing less than stunning visuals throughout the film. Every ape has been given a lot of attention to detail so that eyes, fur and facial expressions help audiences to forget that this is a carefully crafted creation, and helps them to believe that what is happening on screen is real. It’s not just the characters that have to be mentioned when it comes to CGI. The backgrounds and background material in general is jaw-dropping and is a serious step in the right direction for the progression of CGI use in films – especially in the science fiction genre. The CGI is not the only breath-taking feature that this film has to offer. The score is masterfully crafted by Michael Giacchino and perfectly reflects the drama and action on-screen. As if the on-screen activity wasn’t enough to captivate audiences, the score really helps puts audiences right where the director wants them to be – right in the action and they transcend from mere passive viewers, to feeling part of the film. There is a lot more action and a lot less science in the sequel than there was in the 2011 offering, but that works to its advantage. It is rare for a sequel to be anything more than a cash-grab, and luckily, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is one of those rarities. Instead of relying on a weak plot to hope audiences cash-in on the idea of a sequel, characters from the first film are explored more and are given a much more in-depth treatment, and new characters are not only relevant, but have a significant role to play, rather than being carboncopies of characters from the first movie, re-packaged and resold to sell a second movie. The imagery throughout the film is beautiful, and its effects are stunning, this coupled with superb acting and an incredibly relevant and enticing story makes Dawn of the Planet of the Apes one of the best films of 2014 so far, and is likely to stay in the top ten once the year has been seen out. It lives up to the hype and the expectations that were put upon it from its predecessor and is a thrill-ride from start to finish. If you want to watch a blockbuster from Hollywood this summer, but don’t want to feel like you’ve seen it all before at the end of the screening, then I would highly recommend you see Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. lex Gansa has described the up and coming season of Homeland as, “a reboot, like doing another pilot - exciting and terrifying.” The reason for this being their decision to kill off the man of the moment, returned USMC Platoon Sergeant Nicholas Brody, who as we all know, was held as a prisoner of war by alQaeda terrorists for eight years before being rescued. The ‘is he, isn’t he’, cat and mouse game, went on for 3 seasons with Brody’s ‘double agent’ status firmly entrenched in everyone’s minds. Everyone had an opinion and everyone was talking about it. Things could turn completely on their heads in just one episode; with each new episode and season

Page 68

he started as a terrorist and ended a hero, or was it the other way around? That happens regularly throughout the seasons and for me Brody was pretty much the main focus for the whole show bar a handful of episodes in Season 3 where he was again held captive in a foreign land and the focus shifted for a bit, that was the least interesting stage of the season for me.

noose. No way, I thought, this show can’t survive without Brody?

For me, no one else really mattered in the show, I didn’t really get into his lover and nemesis Carrie Mathison’s character (Claire Danes) that much, or Saul (Mandy Patinkin), or the plethora of others wheeled through in order to keep the Brody stories alive. I just wanted to know what Brody was up to, strangely, so did most of the other characters in the show.

I’m not sure about those but I do know that the US Office went steadily downhill when Michael left and I can go way back to when Moulder left the X-Files… it just wasn’t the same. So I do worry for Homeland.

Hence the reason I was dumbstruck when the finale of Season three ended with Brody convicted and dangling from a hangman’s AUG 2014 - issue (41)

Can it? Can we have James Bond without an agent called Bond? Dr Who without a Dr? Could we have a Walking Dead without Rick? Or a Sons Of Anarchy without a Jax?

Along with loosing Brody the brand new season, which premieres in the states on Oct 5th, is set to phase out the Brody family completely with Dana (Morgan Saylor), Jessica (Morena Baccarin) and Chris (Jackson Pace) not expected to return for Season 4. This may point to a refocusing of the show

season—that he wasn’t going to make it out of Season 3 alive.”

Gansa was recently asked about why Brody had to die?

Having watched the recently released season 4 trailer, the focus of the show very clearly has dumped any underlying romantic elements that were prevalent throughout much of the first three seasons. Instead we seem to be getting more into the nitty gritty of what makes Carrie one of the CIA’s top analysts and possibly moving more into her as a field agent in Afghanistan and Pakistan where, after uncovering a new terrorist plot, her investigation are hindered by local forces.

“His shelf life had expired. It was time. We spent a lot of hours in the story room figuring out what we could do with his character, and a lot of the emotional landscape had been crossed. We didn’t want to repeat ourselves. Then we thought of this cool thing Saul could do with him to find political asylum in Iran and use that operationally. So it just felt like once he was in Iran, he wasn’t getting out of Iran—and his time was up.” Killing him off was “one of the very first decisions we made in the story room this

of previous seasons, dangling precariously on the edge of a total mental breakdown caused by her ‘incapable’ handling of her bipolar disorder. “Emotionally, she has stabilized, she’s going into this season very steady. There are some people who are so talented that you forgive past deeds and erratic behaviour. I think Carrie Mathison is one of those people.” Said Executive producers Meredith Stiehm. She is “in a completely different role now that she’s overseas.” Season 4 is set about six months after the end of Season 3, and Carrie has had Brody’s son. “The baby exists as a marker for her emotionally,” Gansa said. So the question is will we see more of the simmering relationship between Carria PAGE 69

and Quinn played by Rupert Friend? Gansa has described Quinn as someone on the sidelines, perhaps just waiting to pick his moment, maybe for Carrie to be at a normal status that we could describe as ‘available for a relationship’. “Carrie has a process of grief to go through before she can be open to something like that, we’re working on that.” He added.

In the shadow of Brody I guess there is going to be a lot of exploring for Homeland as it finds its new identity and explores the lives of those left behind. There also a chance to delve deep into the national cost to Americans, with Afghanistan and Pakistan specifically. “That’s the story we’re going to explore this season. It’s got some juice to it.” Gansa left us with.

So yeh, maybe Quinn will get is moment as it is widely rumoured that season 4 will continue its romantic drama element and Carrie will still be a very ‘sexual woman’ with a moment that will stand beside that of Carrie and Brody’s private getaway.

Homeland kicks off again in October and I for one will probably be glued to my screen to find out how the show handles being without its constant guessing game that was Brody. I for one have my own opinion on what’s in the pipeline for a few seasons down the line…. It involves lookalikes, and

AUG 2014 - issue (41)

we know how these dictatorships like their lookalikes don’t we? Are we really sure it was Brody that was hung? They did have him as a prisoner for a rather long time? Couldn’t they have spent all that time getting one setup for just these sorts of occasions? Well could they… could they? Brody’s not dead I tell you… he ain’t DEAD.

‘This could have been such a good story’ was what I was thinking watching the first two episodes of The CW’s The 100 , based on a novel by Kass Morgan, which started airing in the UK on E4 this month. The adverts promised a post-apocalyptic world where the last humans live on ships in Earth’s orbit because the radiation on our planet has reached dangerous levels. Any crimes committed in space, however small, carry the death penalty unless you’re under age. When living is space is no longer viable, the leaders of this world send the convicted juveniles, amongst them is our leading lady, Clarke, back to Earth to see if it is safe enough to return.

Page 72

Interested? I was. I love works of fiction that give us the opportunity to speculate what humanity would become when pushed to its limits. On paper it could be just what I need until the next Hunger Games film comes out. But on screen I have Clarke Griffin, another white, blonde protagonist just like the Sookies, Pipers and Veronicas everywhere on TV. She’s feisty, proactive but still finds the time to have a rivalry with another girl over a smouldering bad boy while her childhood friend looks on unnoticed. Her mother’s story is much more refreshing as she navigates the complicated politics in space while she is in charge of monitoring the kids and her daughter on the ground as they face increasing danger. Sadly screen time for the teenagers on Earth is prioritised. The 100’s biggest crime is that a viewer can predict everything about to happen. Triumphant music as a tertiary character AUG 2014 - issue (41)

is about to swing across a river on a vine? Something bad is going to happen to him. A boy and a girl wander into a glade with glowin- the dark radiation butterflies? This would be a good time to make out. Taking forever to put a main character into an airlock to jettison her into space? I wonder what’ll come along to save her from death at the last minute. I watched these first two episodes in company and I think our most frequent phrase of the night was ‘called it!’ The 100 is still in the infancy of its run on E4 and so far we have been getting into the plot and setting up the characters which is something all shows have to overcome to some extent. Despite the poor first episodes, it could still be such a good story. Becci Wood GoGuide Magazine Contributor

DVDREVIEWS who says he’s a virgin and someone who helps her out after she gets stranded in the countryside. It’s is probably the audio and visual aspects of Under the Skin that impress me, the audio seemingly intentionally designed to immerse you, with maybe its layered soundscapes giving a feeling of how the alien might be hearing and seeing life on earth. Overall it’s a nice piece of modern, thinking man’s sci-fi, that will hopefully keep you watching with some pretty good performances throughout. Funnily enough while viewing I did think how natural the alien encounters were when she was meeting possible candidates and asking for directions, then I read that directed Jonathan Glazer had actually set Johansson up to do these for real, with real people, filmed using hidden cameras. I was amazed at how well these fitted in with the styling and flow of the movie and it was good to see our awesome country in the movies again. A meticulous piece of filmmaking maybe for for all the thinkers out there rather than those like me looking for some straight forward entertainment.

U

sually I’d be the worst person in the world to review a movie that requires you to interpret stuff and to think too much about what’s going on between the lines. The Kubrick’s of the world have never really done anything for me; I think I’m just too surface for my own liking? So being a Scot I thought I’d give arty sci-fi thriller Under the Skin a try, an adaption of a 2000 story by Michael Faber, filmed in our very own Scotland so maybe that connection will keep me focused. Unfortunately this movie kinda left me with a little bit more questions than it gave me answers. For the most part Under the Skin left me with a few different scenarios rattling around in my head but did little to confirm any of them for sure. For me it makes for a more frustrating view than a truly enjoyable one but I suppose it does look extremely good and succeeded in keeping me thinking and ensures that the film probably stays with me more than say 22 Jump Street will. Plot wise the movie kicks off with an alien life-form, played by Scarlett Johansson, or I suppose it’s the body that’s played by Johansson rather than the alien…. Ahhh… see what I mean. Anyway this young woman turns up in Edinburgh, is given a van by a dude, presumably another alien, and off she goes on her merry way. After a short spell driving in the city she picks up an unfortunate Hibs fan, who we never see again, won’t tell you what happens. She continues this process of picking dudes up who are never seen again. Heads off into the countryside to continue the cull, usually by asking for directions to a collection of various locations, why she ask this I don’t know, I don’t remember it ever being explained? This pattern of driving, picking up and ‘never seeing again’ goes on until she eventually picks up a couple of guys that he seems to regard with some sort of sympathy. DVD/BLU-RAY REVIEWS opportunity to speak to her father about their relationship. Things go massively pear shaped when Charlie lets a screaming homeless guy (Edwin Hodge) into their home, boyfriend Henry then opens fire on dad James for no apparent reason? (none that I caught anyway other than so he could see his daughter??? Maybe I need to re-watch to catch something I missed) This action is closely followed by the appearance of a gang of rich young misfits led by blazer wearing, freaky masked dude (Rhys Wakefield) who describes the man they saved as a ‘dirty homeless pig’ who need to be executed in order for them to ‘cleanse their souls.’ They give them time to hand him over or suffer the consequences… they just want to ‘Purge.’ There’ nothing really new about The Purge from a filmmaking side of things but it’s a cool social political and moral slant on a lot of stuff we’ve seen before done in a pretty slick manner that I enjoyed immensely, but isn’t that always the case when someone’s told you it sucks?

I

was convinced not to go see The Purge when it came out in the cinema and thus left it off my ‘must watch’ list when it eventually came out on DVD late last year. Since I was going to see ‘Anarchy,’ the new summer follow up, I thought I’d better catch a look at the original and what surprise…. A shocking, thought provoking and brutal wee film all at different times, The Purge is essentially your standard thriller scenario that offers up a good deal of social commentary and blood and guts along the way to add to the tension. Set ten years in the future, and everything in America seems to be on the up, crime is down and the economy booming. What’s new? What’s happened? Well It may have something to do with a radical new initiative by the so called ‘New Founding Fathers’ who have initiated The Purge, an annual free for all where ANYTHING is legal for 12 hours between 7pm and 7am for one night only. For most the country simply shuts down and everyone protects themselves behind expensive security systems, on the streets looting, murder and violence are the order of the day. From the safety of their highly monitored homes families watch the horror unfold on their TV screens. Security system salesman and father of two James Sandin (Ethan Hawke), lives in an upmarket neighbourhood with all the trappings of wealth gained by selling his wares to people looking for safety, including all his neighbours. Along with his wife Mary (Lena Headey) he lives with his teenage daughter Zoey (Adelaide Kane) and son Charlie (Max Burkholder). We meet the daughter’s boyfriend and a few of their neighbours before the family go into lockdown mode and settle down to watch the events unfold on their monitors. Unimpressed by the possibility of a night stuck at home Zoey heads to her bedroom where she discovers boyfriend Henry has sneaked in and is adamant that he is going to use it as the perfect

s pretty much all movies seem to getting bigger by the minute who can blame The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for being bigger and aspiring better things? Well you can if it doesn’t work too well, and that’s pretty much what happened here. While the first instalment of the spidey reboot had loads of good things about it there seems to have been a big change in direction with the second outing. It’s considerably brighter in nature and more leaning towards comedy elements more than being dark and the moody and filled with teenage angst, like our first meeting was. Changing tact completely this film is set in a glitzy comic’esque environment for the most part, sure there are the odd darker moments spattered around but overall you’ll see where I’m coming from. It’s either a masterstroke by the production crew or a disappointing backwards step, as every other franchise continues down the road of cinematic and darker films. Story wise Marc Webb and the writing team opt for juggling several plots and sub-plots and throw in a good dollop of fundamentals from the comic books in an obvious nod to the fact that the big wigs plan to expand things along the same lines as The Avengers. But wait…. It’s too much too soon guys, it dilutes the story and leaves me confused and unfulfilled; there’s just too much going on. As you would expect the action for the most part is cool and CGI effects are accomplished, if a bit too overused at times, some scenes look like a good PC game instead of a movie dudes? Andrew Garfield gives us another fine performance as Peter Parker and seems to be trying his hardest to make things work. The chemistry between himself and real-life girlfriend, Emma Stone, is plain to see and she herself pulls in a pretty good showing. Jamie Foxx as Electro is decent and Paul Giamatti’s The Rhino barely makes any lasting impression. Overall a strangely forgettable film.

irst off, I’m by no means a car fan, in fact the closest I get to actually working on my own car is when I annually unroll the garden hose to give it the once over. I’ve also had the same car for 10 years… I’m sure that qualifies me as a NON petrol head.

If you ARE a petrol head and a movie fan you’ll know that there has been ages since Fast & Furious 6 hit our shores and you’ve a lot longer to wait for th next chapted to drop. So after topping up on F1 screamer ‘Rush’ this summer you’re probably looking for something to fill up on for the long stretch? Well here it is…. Kicking off like a darker version of Grease, DreamWorks interpretation of the multiplatform game Need for Speed hits the DVD shelves over the next couple of months to give your very own summer/autumn adrenaline fix. There is racing, crashes and smashes, and smashes and crashes and… well, you get the picture. Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul) is a down on his luck mechanic trying to save his father’s workshop, he builds muscle cars for the love of it and races them for the thrill of it. He also competes in illegal street races to try to keep things afloat. After a race with ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper) where his friend is killed after Dino intentionally clips his car causing him flip out over a bridge, Tobey gets sent to prison for a couple of years. On his release he plots his revenge in the only way he knows how, by driving. I liked Paul in this role, Michael Keaton gets way too little screen time and is underutilised as race organiser Monarch, Cooper is pretty bland as the baddy, but British actress Poots stands out as his car broker sidekick Julia Maddon in what is a more than enjoyable romp even for a non-car/racing fan. It’s not the Need for Speed that I remember playing on the PS3 but hey it’s 130 minutes of entertaining stunt fuelled, tyre screeching, engine roaring fun. All that’s missing really is a kick ass soundtrack? All driving movies need a kick ass soundtrack right?

DVD/BLU-RAY REVIEWS MYMHM ? MOVIE

I

’m not a fan of opera in general or Britains Got Talent for that matter but One Chance is a pretty funny, heart-warming and uplifting little story of an underdog coming good. Played out in a formulated fashion with nothing really standout about it, leaving the only thing to concentrate on being the story itself. Potts is your standard loner kid growing up, he’s on the side of ‘uncool’, so gets his fair share of trouble from the usual school bully types, mainly from arch nemesis Matthew (mainly played by Trystan Gravelle.) Growing up in an industrial steel town in Port Talbot he is expected to get a ‘manly’ job but instead he dreams of being an opera singer and works in Carphone Warehouse with weird mate Braddon (Mackenzie Crook) and is, even in adulthood, still a target of Mathews abuse and is ridiculed by his very own father Roland (Colm Meaney). The performances by Corden and Alexandra Roach as his ‘internet girlfriend’ Julie-Anne are pretty good, but Corden is, as usual, 95% Smithy in the classic Ricky Gervais is 95% Brent in any character he plays…. apart from ‘Derek’, I’ll give him that. To be fair it is this sweet innocent romance which lies firmly at the forefront of this film and keeps things tied together. After meeting his internet check-out girlfriend that he persuis his dream of attending opera school in Venice. Things go pretty well at the school, there’s some romance, and Potts gets to sing for Pavarotti (his hero) who basically rips his dreams apart, “You’re not yet an opera singer and maybe never will be” crushingly ring in his ears. So confidence shattered he heads back to Port Talbot, “You’ve had your great adventure,” demands his father, it’s time for his son to ‘man up’ and get a job in the steelworks. There’s a lot of stuff that happens to Potts throughout his rise to fame, so much that you will probably be grabbing your phone/ tablet while watching to see if some of it is actually true or just added for colour or comic elements? The famed Britain’s Got Talent audition, now @ 115 million plus views on YouTube, is kept to the last few minutes of the film and it cements our ‘heroes’ legacy in history as a huge working man’s triumph over adversity that we will never forget…. well until one Susan Boyle came along that is.

f you wanted to find out what The Walking Dead’s Daryl did before he ended up as one the remaining survivors of a zombie holocaust, and how he honed his fringe flicking emo coolness then look no further. The Boondock Saints is the first in a duo of movies charting the lives of Irish-Catholic-American fraternal twins Connor and Murphy MacManus, a right pair of scalywags ;-) After enjoying the usual Saint Patrick’s Day festivities, hosted by their friendly, Tourette’s suffering, local bar owner, they end up toe to toe with the Russian mob… Flicking forward to the day after the night before and a couple of bodies are found in an alleyway and Federal Agent Paul Smecker, played awesomely over the top by Willem Dafoe, is brought in to head up the investigation. The bodies are identified as Russian mob and Smecker uses his weird skills to determine exactly what happened in the alley. The MacManus boys give themselves in to the cops and we are treated to a flashback as to what occurred with the mob guys the night before. Staying overnight at a police station they both receive a message from God which they interpret as an instruction to rid Boston of all evil. Teaming up with their friend Rocco they set out on numerous campaigns to bump off all the bad guys they can, causing a massive trail of destruction in their wake. Smecker ends up with the task of investigating each mission that the dynamic trio carry out. As the pieces of the puzzle start to come in Smecker starts to get a real picture as to what is going on and possible suspects, the problem is the closer he gets the more he starts to ask himself: Should he arrest them or join them? It’s a ruckus collection of ideas, sewn together by flashbacks/flash forwards, but I enjoyed it a lot and there is a follow-up that is equally as good and a nice rare appearance of our own Billy Connolly as a dodgy Irish nutcase, so hopefully if you haven’t seen it pick it up and have a pretty sweet 3 hours with a few beers and a bucket of popcorn on a cool summer night.

‘B

reathtakingly Stunning’ is a phrase that I ‘would’ probably conjure up to describe the look of EA’s new UFC game. But even with its super aesthetics it does have a few issues and I can see the next UFC game needing improved. The game can feel a tad like robot boxing when your fighters are going at it, toeto-toe, and swinging like mad men.

With UFC built exclusively for next-gen consoles, it definitely shows. These are the most striking character models and impressive animations I’ve ever seen in a game to date. Even when the camera is up close and in motion, they appear all natural and believable. This continues on into pre-match introductions, which only happens during a title bout, your fighter’s virtual counterpart convincingly convey personalities. The game keeps its TV style presentation from the THQ days and the commentary by Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg is similarly energetic. Once the fists start flying, good animations and decent hit reactions keep things looking smooth and organic, although there does seem to be a lack of move animations, so you might notice that some fighters have the same animation. However it doesn’t stop the detail of the animations from impressing each person you show. You’ll see the skin ripple with impact and fighters will grimace with pain after every devastating blow.

GAMING REVIEW

Page 92

AUG 2014 - issue (41)

With Mixed Martial Arts being an amazingly complex sport to master, it seems that EA have applied the same methods to the game itself. It’s not the easiest game to pick up and master, but practice makes perfect and you will eventually start to pick up on the moves. There are so many options for attacking though that you’ll probably forget about them, you’ll probably stick to what you know and randomly remember other options from time to time. Also be prepared to shred your analogue sticks because you’ll be spinning them all over the place trying to figure out how to transition from your ground game and your clinch’s. This isn’t something I would expect a newcomer to the franchise to be able to pick up and play instantly other than just for a quick toe-totoe battering. Being an avid watcher of UFC I know roughly how tough one fighter is, but their virtual counterparts resiliency seems remarkable. I’ve had a fighter in a Thai-clinch where I landed well over ten perfect knee strikes to the recipients face and they were still standing. It can be off putting to see your opponent just shrug of so many crushing blows. They do make up for it with some rather exciting multiplayer match ups though. EA have changed the submission game to literally a GAME. It’s now actually a mini-game where one has to point the analogue stick in a certain direction to drive the animation along to ultimately tap out your opponent. This isn’t a good move in my opinion, submission’s now sometimes feel dragged out and more of a game of wits as opposed to pure skill. On the other hand although submissions can sometimes be lengthy they can also be spontaneous and end fights in an instant taking you rather by surprise. The same lack of stakes also permeates through

AUG 2014 - issue (41)

the entire grappling game. Sweeping and passing is just too easy, since you will always succeed unless your opponent does the correct counter move. That might sound fair on paper, but in practice it takes all the urgency out of the ground game. I’m never more than a single click of the analogue stick away from getting back to my feet if my opponent misses their counter window, which makes fighting for a dominant position more or less meaningless. Other than exhibition matches, the only other part worth playing is the career mode. Where you create fighter and star in reality TV show ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ battling to earn your way into the UFC and becoming champion. The beginning of your career is the most fun part and making your way up to be champion. Before each fight you’ll go through three training sessions, and depending on how well you perform you’ll be rewarded with a certain amount of points to spend on your fighter. After each fight, depending whether you win or lose, you’ll also gain points. These points allow you to increase your skills and unlock more moves. But once you have reached the top and became champion and pretty much maximised your skill and move set, it then begins to get repetitive and you begin to just lose interest as you fight the same fighters over and over again. Even though the games aesthetics are absolute fantastic, there are multiple issues that could be tweaked and improved upon in the next UFC game. Even with fights that can feel dragged out and fighters who can take a beating like Superman, the game will no doubt score big when played with friends on multiplayer. ar in most games is usually used as more of a backdrop to things, but Valiant Hearts explores the effect war has on it the very people. It doesn’t concern itself with nations or ideologies; it focuses on how war breaks humans apart as war isn’t always something someone chooses, it can be forced upon us and risk friendship, families, and our very selves. Even though this isn’t an FPS or a violent game, it’s one of the most emotional and human war focused games I’ve played.

Valiant Hearts is set during World War I and you witness the battle from both sides of the war through the eyes of four characters. Karl is a German farmer, a husband and soon to be father living in France with his French wife to whom he is taken away from and forced to join the German war effort. Emile is Karl’s father-in-law and is also forced to join the French army regardless of his age. Anna is a Belgian nurse searching for her father who has been taken by the German forces for scientific research. Lastly, Freddie is an American living in France who voluntarily joins the French military after he loses his wife to the war. There is also a dog (that I called Hector) that begins to follow you and connects all the characters together. The dog is also used for solving puzzles and reaching areas that normally you wouldn’t be able too. You get easily attached to the four because they feel relatable, particularly for me was

Emile. He wants everything just to back to normal again, but is constantly staring into adversity and witnesses suffering everywhere he goes. But with the help of his daughter sending him letters and pictures of his grandson Emile still has hope for the future, despite watching hundreds of soldiers dying in front of him. Apart from narrator that connects the scenes together, characters only seem to speak in a muddled style. Valiant Hearts relies on the power of emotional imagery to show the horrors of war, such as fields desolated by the carnage of war and sprinkled with the mangled bodies of dead soldiers. Killing actually doesn’t play a major part in the game and there are joyous moments. The characters spend more time saving lives rather than taking them. With Anna being a nurse she regularly treats the wounded while Emile and Freddie often pull fellow soldiers out from under rubble.

One slight downer, the antagonist, Baron Von Dorf, is a German officer but he is used in a more cheesy and comedic way rather than a cynical war general. You’re occasionally thrown into boss stages where Von Dorf will chuckle as you battle against the games intentionally wacky war machinery of the time such as blimps and tanks. Most of Valiant Hearts is played like an adventure game, where you search for items in order to move on to different areas and solve a handful of puzzles, however even though some can take you a while for you to solve there’s never a feeling that they are a burden. There is a nice balance between taking a second to think and not being stuck

for a long period of time. There’s also a nice hint system that doesn’t give too much away. The game can range from quiet areas where you’re looking for a spare part for a car to tense battle scenarios where you’re running from cover to cover with bullets flying past your head. There are also sections when the game will break away from the action and you’ll manoeuvre a taxi while dodging obstacles to a particular classical song. The game is also rather educational as well. As each new level you go to will have a few did-you-know facts about the area or incidents that occurred

AUG 2014 - issue (41)

during the time. There’s even over 100 collectables in the game that offer a little insight to what was in the area or what soldiers had on their possession. It goes to show that to make a game about war, you don’t need it to be about guns, just a good story. You very rarely kill people in Valiant Hearts but solve a lot of puzzles. But what really hits you hard is that Valiant Hearts isn’t afraid to show the darkest parts of war, yet it’s never pessimistic. It goes to show that there are always those that are fighting to make things better. Sam Sheppard GoGuide Magazine Games Contributor

or me a Transformers game should be fun to play. You can’t go wrong with robot’s transforming into vehicles and vice versa and battling other robots. It just needs to be well designed and visually appealing. Sadly Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark is neither of these things and brings a rather bland narrative along with it.

The story is basically about bad guys wanting to find this relic (the Dark Spark) while the good guys try to stop them. But in previous Transformers game campaigns you had the choice of playing either as the Autobots or Decepticons, with Rise of the Dark Spark’s campaign you switch sides as part of the story, and it happens pretty unevenly. So on some occasions you feel like you’re fighting against yourself, knockdown down your own previous achievements. Peter Cullen takes up his role as Optimus Prime once again, but apart from his always grand performances, the rest of the cast aren’t so notable. Always trying to get others to crack a smile, Jazz never really delivers on the comedy side. The cool, disciplined samurai Drift tries to balance things by being especially dull. I suppose the action isn’t too bad, the combat functions using a handy collection of weapons. Every gun you Page 102

wield feels different and unique, all of which come in handy in all situations form long range to close-quarter-combat. The enemies you fight aren’t the most engaging and other than the shielded ‘Titan’ Decepticon’s and other light armoured enemies that just dart about the place, enemies require little to no effort to successfully beat them. Things can feel dragged out mostly because you have to defeat all the enemies in order to progress. Special attacks are unique to every Transformer, some can be really useful like Drift's one hit sword slice, or Sharpshot’s invisibility which can be useful to get one up on your enemies but isn’t put to use for much else. The vehicle transformations pretty much fail to add anything else to the game other than to get somewhere else a little bit quicker or to jump over an obstacle. For car transformations, the controls or awkward and there no real speed difference either, unless you boost or turbo (their same thing as well). The flight transformations are a little better and it is nice to fly about a bit. Sadly only one Dinobot makes an appearance during the campaign, but you can choose more Dinobot’s solely for multiplayer purposes, which is at least considerate. Overall this Transformers game is pretty weak, the campaign is dull, and vehicle transformations and the combat fall flat and feel more of a burden than satisfying our destructive desires, plus the multiplayer mode has lost its customization side to it, so other than choosing your weapons you’re only given a bundle of transformers from the universe. You can’t help but say this game is a massive step backwards for the Transformer game franchise. Oh, and although I don’t hate the soundtrack, there are times when the heroic music mixed with dubstep can seem out of place and even just a bit much. Sam Sheppard GoGuide Magazine Games Contributor

CLASSIC MOVIE POSTERS 101

T

he Silence of the Lambs is a 1991 thriller that blends elements of the crime and horror genres. Directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, and Scott Glenn, the film is based on Thomas Harris’ 1988 novel of the same name, his second to feature Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer.

In the film, Clarice Starling, a young U.S. FBI trainee, seeks the advice of the imprisoned Dr. Lecter to apprehend another serial killer, known only as “Buffalo Bill”. The Silence of the Lambs was released on February 14, 1991, and grossed $272.7 million worldwide against its $19 million budget. It was only the third film, the other two being It Happened One Night and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, to win Academy Awards in all the top five categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay). It is also the first Best Picture winner widely considered to be a horror film, and only the second such film to be nominated in the category, after The Exorcist in 1973. The film is considered “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant by the U.S. Library of Congress and was selected to be preserved in the National Film Registry in 2011.
