MESSAGE OF GREETING

For the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce

I

am delighted to have this opportunity to congratulate you on the fortieth anniversary of the German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce! Sadly, I can’t be there with you in person tonight. But this is no reflection of the joy I feel on this special occasion – on the contrary! For many Germans, New Zealand is the country they dream about visiting. But of course, New Zealand is much more than just a perfect holiday destination. I don’t have to tell you, Ladies and Gentlemen. You know first hand not only about the impressive beauty of New Zealand’s landscapes, but also about its potential for close economic cooperation with Germany. Much of this economic cooperation comes together at the German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce. Established forty years ago, the AHK has played a pioneering role in globalising Germany’s economy. And I mean this literally. In geographic terms, New Zealand is as far away from Germany as you can possibly get. The AHK’s task is nothing less than to bridge this distance. For forty years now, the Chamber has lived up to this challenge in the most impressive way and continues to do so today, at a time when digital technologies have made it much easier to be in direct contact and do business across large distances. Back then in 1983, the AHK had 28 members. Today, there are more than 300. As the AHK steadily grows, so do its responsibilities. Today, the Auckland-based Chamber also looks after Germany’s economic relations with the pacific island states. This is a major and important task, especially given that these states are hit directly and hit hard by the climate crisis. As you know, the Federal Republic of Germany opened a new embassy in the Republic of Fiji this year. I would like to thank the AHK for working with our embassies in Wellington and Suva as they turn their attention to the Blue Continent. That’s great!

Thanks to the ties between New Zealand and Germany that you have helped forge through your decades-long economic work, our two countries are working together more closely today than ever before. A major advantage to this cooperation is our shared outlook and our shared values. New Zealand-European relations are a perfect illustration of a ‘partnership based on values’. This partnership of values has just paved the way for the EU-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement. This FTA is one of the most ambitious ever to be signed. Not only in terms of its ‘traditional’ trade policy substance, but especially in terms of environmental and climate standards, and safeguards for human rights and workers’ rights. I very much welcome the fact that the FTA will soon enter into force. The Agreement will make trade between our countries easier and thus help increase it. So the FTA will be a building block for the diversification of Germany’s foreign trade and investment in the Indo-Pacific region. This is because free trade agreements provide your businesses with stable, rulesbased and reliable parameters to operate within. This framework will allow the German business community to become more broad-based in general, to venture onto new markets and to mitigate risks – in other words: to diversify. ‘Diversification’ here does not mean decoupling our economy from certain countries. In fact, the opposite is true: what we want to do is NOT to turn inwards and away from some of our partners, but to work with them more closely to develop shared incentives for strong and flourishing economic relations. Our commitment to multilateralism, international cooperation and coordination is one that we share with New Zealand. New Zealand is therefore a crucial, close and highly trusted partner for us, both across the Indo-Pacific region, and more generally in issues of global importance.

We are aware that we need to adapt and enhance our activities in what is the world’s most dynamic region, and firmly advocate a values-based and rules-based international order. For this reason, the Federal Government adopted policy guidelines on the IndoPacific region in September 2020. The EU also has its own guidelines to underline our commitment to this region. Through these guidelines, we intend not least to help accelerate the green and digital transitions. After all, a global transition to climate neutrality is possible – if we work more closely and more effectively with regions such as the Indo-Pacific. As difficult and demanding as it is to overhaul our industrial sectors while they are in full operation, the global green transition – if we shape it fairly – will form the basis for sustained growth, good jobs and participation in prosperity. This is why I very much welcome the fact that we plan to look for shared interests in the energy sector as well, so that we can meet our climate targets and step up our economic cooperation in this field. Ladies and Gentlemen, Our bilateral relations are close, trusted and made to last. Our FTA will be yet another bridge spanning the large distance between Europe and New Zealand. All in all, we are set up for further growth and well positioned for bracing the challenges of our time with good confidence. I would like to thank the AHK for its outstanding contributions to what are excellent German-New Zealand relations, and to congratulate you on your fortieth anniversary. I wish you all a great evening in Auckland!

Dr Robert Habeck | Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

I

t is my great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s milestone edition of our Double the Vision publication as we celebrate our 40th Anniversary of the German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Incorporated (GNZCC) and 70 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and New Zealand. For the Chamber, these celebrations culminated in a wonderful Gala Anniversary event held in Auckland in October, attended by our members and business partners. A feature of the evening was the announcement of the winners in our inaugural GNZCC Business Awards. These awards recognise bestin-class achievement amongst our member organisations across a range of different business disciplines, as well as member contributions to the advancement of German-New Zealand trade and trade relations. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in helping make our 40th Gala Anniversary year such a successful one and to congratulate all our Business Award category finalists and winners. You will find related articles and photos for your viewing pleasure within this publication. The past two years “post-Covid” have continued to throw up plenty of challenges for the global business community. The ongoing resilience of business and the ability of business people to adapt has been truly remarkable and something to be admired. Resilience and adaptability are just two positive qualities amongst many that Germans and Kiwis have in common. Not unsurprisingly, these positive attributes flow through their companies as well. We, therefore have good reason to be optimistic about the future of our German-New Zealand bilateral relations and ongoing growth in our 2-way trade opportunities. At the GNZCC, we stand ready to support you, both now and in the future, as we look ahead with optimism towards our 50th anniversary in a decade’s time. Whether you are a German business looking to expand your interests in and around New Zealand or a New Zealand business looking to establish or expand your presence in Germany, I would encourage you to contact our specialist staff here at the GNZCC. We are here to help!

Jim Bibby | President, German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Inc.

K

ia ora. Relationships between countries are always relationships between people. My time in New Zealand so far has emphasised this, as I have enjoyed getting to know the people of this nation who uphold the strong foundation of our bilateral relations. This year, we are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and Aotearoa, New Zealand. Our countries enjoy a warm and longstanding relationship built on economic and scientific ties, as well as people-to-people links. You might ask, what was it like 70 years ago in comparison to today? Initially, New Zealand seemed an unlikely partner, far away in the Pacific and with a very different history. While New Zealand was an established and solid democracy, in 1953, Germany was not yet a sovereign state. Just 8 years after WWII, Germany was still rebuilding and struggling with its immediate past of the Nazi regime. During this time, the groundwork was laid for the so-called German “Wirtschaftswunder” – the economic boom that took place in West Germany in the 50’s and 60’s. This is still the foundation for our prosperity and ultimately for present-day Germany.

Today, Germany and New Zealand’s relationship is the strongest it has ever been. As solid democracies and trading nations, we are strong advocates of the international rules-based order. While we may be located on opposite sides of the globe, we share the same values. The Pacific also continues to be a growing area of interest for Germany, as shown by the recent opening of the German embassy in Fiji to bring us even closer together. Germany is New Zealand’s biggest EU trading partner. Following the signing of the historic EU-NZ free trade agreement (FTA) this year, there is now even greater investing potential in New Zealand. The FTA is estimated to save 140 million Euros per year in duties for EU investors, and increase EU-New Zealand trade by up to 30 percent in the first decade. The German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce (GNZCC) and the German Embassy are ready to support the increased economic cooperation which this agreement has to offer. As the GNZCC is celebrating their 40-year anniversary this year, this is yet another important marker of our countries‘ longstanding partnership.

Another important milestone is the signing by the EU and New Zealand of the association agreement on the participation of New Zealand in Horizon Europe – the EU‘s research and innovation funding programme with a budget of 95 billion Euros. This opens doors for closer cooperation between researchers and innovators across New Zealand and their counterparts in the EU. Collaborative research projects will allow our best minds and talents to work together to tackle issues of global importance like health, climate change, and AI. The Joint Statement by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs Nanaia Mahuta further emphasises our commitment as likeminded partners to free, open and sustainable trade within a rules-based international order. Germany and New Zealand have come a long way in our bilateral relations in the last 70 years. This solid partnership can only continue to grow stronger with our support. Let’s aspire to build on the ties between our two nations together. ● Nicole Menzenbach, Ambassador I Botschafterin German Embassy Wellington I Deutsche Botschaft Wellington

NEW ZEALAND AMBASSADOR

Reporting from Berlin, Germany

K

ia ora koutou, and guten Tag! Warmest greetings from Berlin. While many of the global challenges look as complex as ever, I am pleased to report that Germany and New Zealand continue to scale up our cooperation. This year, we are celebrating a significant milestone between our two countries - 70 years of diplomatic relations. Our political, economic, science and people connections get richer, deeper, and enduring. Geographically, we are distant but in an interconnected world – increasingly and importantly – Germany’s security is New Zealand’s security, and Germany’s prosperity is New Zealand’s prosperity, and vice versa. On the trade front, the highlight remains the momentous progress made in securing a future focused trading partnership with the European Union. The EU-NZ Free Trade Agreement has been finalised, it has been endorsed by the EU Council of Ministers, and now awaits approval by the European Parliament and New Zealand Parliament respectively. We are on track for this approval around November for 2023 in Europe and the new New Zealand parliament will consider early in 2024. This

will yield a new era in commercial relations between New Zealand and around 450 million consumers across Europe. Our focus now is securing the maximum gains from the Agreement when it enters into force. Over the past year, Germany and New Zealand have signed a Space Cooperation Agreement and a set of collaborative projects are already under way. I am also pleased to report that Germany and New Zealand have agreed a Joint Statement of Intent to work together on agriculture and climate. Both countries are committed to a net zero future and while our agriculture production systems are very different, we have common challenges to meet our climate commitments. Finally, in August 2023 we signed an information sharing agreement that will support greater sharing of information between our respective Government agencies to support a shared understanding of international events. The flow of people, students, tourists, and businesspersons is back. It has been a pleasure to farewell delegations travelling to New Zealand or welcome business people back in Germany to attend Germany’s legendary trade fairs or refresh

DESTINATION GERMANY

Germany: Your Gateway to Europe

R

ecently, there’s been cynicism about the global economy and slowing growth; Germany has not been immune from these sentiments. Some economists have labelled Germany the “Sick Man of Europe,” with the slowdown pinned to high-energy prices and slowing manufacturing output. But numbers paint one side of the story; not too long ago, the numbers showed a strong economic rebound from COVID-19. Striking a balance between acknowledging the changing times and retaining optimism about the future is crucial.

Before dismissing Germany as a business location, consider these compelling factors: Germany’s $7.7 trillion economic powerhouse (comparable to the combined GDP of the UK and Australia), political stability, efficient contract laws, a culture of innovation, substantial government investments, and, notably, a well-defined action plan.

A STRONG AND RESILIENT ECONOMY

“Germany can be flexible; we can be unbureaucratic; and we can be fast,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz declared at this

year’s World Economic Forum after headwinds from last year’s energy crisis. It is a testament to Germany’s resilience and agility in uncertain times. This flexibility extends to the business and investment scene, too. So, how does Germany achieve this? ■ Bundesländer lead the way: Germany’s

Very Big Market: Two-way trade between the EU and New Zealand was $20.2 billion in 2022. This was about four times the size of trade between the UK and New Zealand.

■ Driving Economic Growth: The FTA will

add $1.8 billion in additional profits to EUbound exports by 2035.

■ Tariff Elimination: All German (and EU)

imports are exempt from tariffs, saving the New Zealand economy $100 million NZD annually. In return, the EU has significantly increased quotas for New Zealand imports and eliminated all tariffs on all horticultural products like honey, fruit, and vegetables.

Source: https://countryeconomy.com/countries/compare/germany/uk

■ Innovation: This year’s Global Innovation

Index placed Germany in 8th place globally; the German government continues to push for increased R&D by investing $195 billion annually. In addition, any foreign business conducting R&D activities is entitled to a 25% tax credit on eligible expenditures.

■ An open economy: Germany is the ideal

gateway to the European single market, which includes non-EU member states. This market has 450 million consumers and is worth NZD $27 trillion.

■ Skills:

Being based in Germany gives you access to the Schengen Area (it covers 27 countries) and the free movement of people, skills, and goods without restriction. This gives Germany a competitive advantage over the United Kingdom as a business location. ■ Start-Ups: Germany is home to 60,000

start-ups employing 400,000 workers. In 2021 alone, $30 billion Euros was invested in start-ups.

■ Investment

subsidies: the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) has created a grant scheme to unpack growth opportunities in every corner of Germany. The BMWK subsidises up to 45% of eligible business expenditure for small businesses setting up, and 25% for large companies.

“Germany can be flexible; we can be unbureaucratic; and we can be fast.”

■ Foreign Investment: The FTA will increase foreign investment by up to 80%. The bilateral investment between Germany and New Zealand is currently NZD $8.8 billion.

- Chancellor Olaf Scholz

■ A bigger slice for smaller players: Let’s

like any other FTA; keywords like “tariff reductions”, “free flow of goods”, “economic growth”, and “opportunity” are mentioned frequently. When contrasted with the recently instituted UK-New Zealand FTA, the catchwords applied throughout the EU FTA have ‘bite’. That isn’t to downplay the importance of the UK as an ally or trading partner. Yet, the scale is different—the 450 million European consumers (versus the 65 million in the UK) is significant. The tariff savings passed down to Kiwi businesses are another traction point; the UK FTA offers $37 million in savings compared to the $100 million from this Goliath of a deal. Additionally, the UK government has imposed a more extended timeframe for complete tariff removal (some products, like meat, will take 15 years compared to the immediate tariff reductions of the EU FTA).

In these emerging times, partnering with the GNZCC is a key step in your market entry strategy. ● ■ The GNZCC works closely with Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) to help NZ companies establish a branch in Germany. THE GOLIATH: A FREE TRADE AGREEMENT WITH BITE

Germany’s clear focus is on future-proofing the economy, which includes deepening ties with trading partners. That’s where New Zealand comes into play with the newly minted EU-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement. At the surface level, it seems

not forget that the FTA creates opportunities for smaller players that form 97% of New Zealand’s businesses. Whether you’re a horticulture exporter or a medicinal cannabis start-up, the FTA reduces the red tape to break into the European market.

SUSTAINABILITY

What New Zealand’s FTA with the EU means for sustainability

I

n July, New Zealand signed a free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union that will help make trade more sustainable. The agreement, which is expected to enter into force in the first half of 2024, involves ambitious sustainable trade outcomes in many areas, including climate change, labour rights, women’s economic empowerment, environmentally harmful fisheries, and fossil fuel subsidies. It is the first FTA built around the EU’s ‘Together for Green and Just Growth’ approach to trade and sustainable

development. A central point of the new approach is a stronger focus on implementing and enforcing the commitments.

of NZ$100 million per year on New Zealand exports to the EU. After seven years, when the agreement is fully implemented, 97% of current trade will enter the EU duty-free.

THE FTA WILL HAVE A BIG IMPACT ON TRADE BETWEEN NEW ZEALAND AND THE EU

THE AGREEMENT PROMOTES SUSTAINABILITY

Two-way trade (goods and services) with New Zealand’s fourth largest trading partner was worth NZ$20.2 billion in 2022. More than 91% of New Zealand’s trade into the EU will enter duty-free from the day the FTA comes into force. This means tariff savings

It does this by: ■ making climate commitments and labour standards enforceable ■ including an article dedicated to trade and gender equality ■ progressively reducing fossil fuel subsidies in line with the EU’s Green Deal

“After seven years, when the (FTA) agreement is fully implemented, 97% of current trade will enter the EU duty-free.” ■ introducing zero tariffs on environmental goods and

services, such as renewable energy and energy-efficient products ■ phasing out antimicrobial agents – including antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals and antiparasitics - as growth promoters and reducing their use in animal production ■ promoting biodiversity, sustainable forestry and sustainable fishing ■ supporting a circular economy that uses resources efficiently and supply chains that are not based on deforestation ■ encouraging parties to work together to reduce food loss and waste, pesticides, and fertilisers.

YOU NEED TO PREPARE YOUR BUSINESS

1.

Measure and reduce your carbon emissions Both parties to the FTA agreed to ‘refrain from any action that materially defeats the object and purpose of the Paris Agreement.’ To meet this goal, CO2 emissions must fall by 50% by 2030 (from 2010 levels) and reach net zero by 2050. To keep competitive, you will need to show you are measuring your emissions and have a plan for how to cut them. Make sure you understand your organisation’s full supply chain. This will help you measure and report your Scope 3 emissions (the emissions from your value chain) as well as identify any potential risks of modern slavery. To prove that you are on the right track, set a sciencebased target and/or join the Climate Leader Coalition in New Zealand. A science-based target shows your organisation by how much and how quickly you need to reduce your emissions to reach ‘net zero’ by 2050.

2.

Investigate circular economy Investigate what a more circular economy could look like for your business. The concept of a circular economy involves reducing waste and consuming fewer non-renewable resources. It enables economic growth by designing long-lasting products that can be repurposed, remanufactured, reused, recycled, or reintroduced to the environment. This is relevant for products and packaging. For the packaging you need to ask: Can it be recycled? What is the recycled content in the material? Can it be reused? For manufacturers, it is the design of your product that is relevant: Are materials being kept in use? Is your product made to last? Keep the EU’s Right to Repair in mind. Calculating circularity with metrics like the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Material Circularity Indicator (MCI) or the Circular Transition Indicator tool (CTI) will help you to communicate your efforts. If you get your business ready now, the FTA will open many avenues to succeed sustainably. ●

GERMAN TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER

Harnessing the Potential – German Funded Project Focus for New Zealand

I

n the midst of a green revolution, New Zealand is embarking on a journey towards sustainability and reduced carbon emissions. Three key areas hold enormous potential for German technologies: ■ retrofitting existing housing, ■ t he adoption of electric mobility, ■ t he development of green hydrogen infrastructure for heavy transport. In this article we will delve into the GNZCC projects, relevant to these areas, being funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action. ■ Retrofitting

■ Electric mobility and green hydrogen

are rapidly reshaping the transportation landscape in New Zealand, offering numerous benefits for the environment and the economy. Since 2017, New Zealand’s light EV fleet has increased significantly and now makes up 11% of New Zealand’s market share. This growth is attributed to subsidies for clean, lowemissions vehicle transport and the NZD$100 million “Low Emissions Transport Fund” that seeks to increase the market share of electric transportation, including for heavy transport such as buses and trucks. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy, has emerged as a

housing, where a need has been identified to bring the existing housing stock up to the healthy home standards in line with the actual and updated requirements. The GNZCC has already undertaken a target market analysis and developed a market entry strategy for German SMEs offering climate and energy-efficient technologies. This analysis was presented during an industry conference in Germany in 2023, and resulted in the formation of Ecovolution, the German company consortium. Ecovolution presented their technology solution successfully in May 2023 in New Zealand and are now in the process of securing their first big project.

ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE AND STORAGE, APPLICATIONS FOR THE E-MOBILITY AND GREEN HYDROGEN

This GNZCC project, with a virtual delegation of German companies, connects leading technologies in energy infrastructure and e-mobility solutions with New Zealand’s need for up-to-date electric transport infrastructure. The e-mobility project will help match German expertise and cuttingedge innovations with New Zealand’s needs. These solutions are wide-ranging and have applications in several different scenarios – from urban mobility to long haul heavy transport. The GNZCC has undertaken a target market analysis and developed a market entry strategy for German businesses providing solutions tailored to New Zealand’s requirements, identifying key needs and stakeholders in the e-mobility infrastructure sector. The analysis was presented during an industry conference in Germany to relevant technology providers and six German companies will present their products during an online industry conference, with expert speakers from New Zealand and Germany, followed by B2B meetings to develop market opportunities. hydrogen holds significant promise for decarbonising heavy transport in New Zealand. The heavy transport sector, which includes trucks, buses, and potentially even trains and ships, is a challenging area to transition to cleaner energy sources, due to the high energy demands and longrange requirements.

GREEN HYDROGEN TECHNOLOGIES FOR HEAVY-DUTY TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURE SOLUTIONS

This pilot project is being conducted by the GNZCC, in collaboration with Hiringa Energy, and funded in part through the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action. New Zealand’s transition from fossil fuels is compatible with electric and combustion engines, making it applicable to a variety of heavy transport, including buses and trucks. Despite the excellent potential for its implementation, the current green hydrogen-generated refuelling infrastructure remains limited in New Zealand. The lack of appropriate infrastructure has initiated significant investment by the Government through the ‘Green Investment Fund’ and NZD$16 million via the ‘Covid Recovery Fund.’ These funds will enable Hiringa to construct a small number of green hydrogen refuelling stations in New Zealand, as part of a pilot project. The GNZCC is conducting a comprehensive target market analysis on the green hydrogen

"Hydrogen is a key future fuel option that will help us meet our climate goals by enabling us to decarbonise transport and industry applications in particular that will be hard to electrify." - Hon Dr. Megan Woods, former Energy and Resources Minister (NZ) infrastructure for heavy transport in New Zealand. Subsequently, an information event in November 2023 will be held in Germany to present the outcomes. This will be followed by the formation of a consortium of German companies collaboratively working towards developing a turnkey solution. The proposed solution will be unveiled at a conference, in Wellington in May 2024, followed by B2B meetings.

GNZCC – FIRST STEPS INTO THE PACIFIC ISLANDS

Global geopolitical interest in the pacific islands countries (PICs) has substantially increased in recent years. Countries, such as the USA, Turkey, UAE, Venezuela and most recently Germany, have opened embassies in Fiji, Samoa, and the Cook Islands, underlining the importance the international community places on the region.

The PICs face an unprecedented crisis with climate change and volatile fuel prices. The rapid changes occurring are impacting the islands' livelihoods and their existence. The GNZCC is participating in the Environmental Protection Export Initiative (EXI), managed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and consumer Protection, to analyse the potential implementation of green hydrogen mini-grid systems in various sectors. In collaboration with the German Ministry for the Environment, and an external research institute, the GNZCC is analysing the energy situation and the potential to introduce autonomous mini-grid power stations with the capability to generate green hydrogen. This analysis includes field research and meetings with stakeholders in the Islands. The analyses will be presented to German stakeholders in early 2024. ●

PATHS TO MARKET

Trade fairs, your thousand-year-old gateway to business opportunities

E

very year, more than 235,000 exhibiting companies and a remarkable 16 million visitors flock to trade fairs in Germany. No other country has as many leading international trade shows, making Germany the place to be for business, regardless of your specific target market(s). After 3 tough years, trade fairs are back with a vengeance. With more than a thousand years of history (the world’s first trade fair took place in Frankfurt in 1150 AD), not even a global pandemic could slow the German trade fair machine for very long. For 2024, Germany has no less than 350 trade fairs scheduled, which can make it a daunting task to narrow down the best show. The German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Inc. (GNZCC), has over 6,000 New Zealand trade fair clients and 35 years of hands-on experience with German trade fairs, representing three of the larger international organisations in the world of

trade fairs; Messe Berlin, Nuremberg Messe, and Spielwarenmesse. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a seasoned exhibitor, the GNZCC can assist you with everything from your trade fair strategy, marketing, coordination of a New Zealand pavilion and individual stand organisation through to B2B meeting arrangements and delegation planning. So without further ado, here are a few of the shows we’re excited about for 2024:

FOOD & BEVERAGE (F&B)

■ Biofach/Vivaness: The world’s leading

show for organic food & beverage, as well as the international show for natural or organic self-care and cosmetic products. For the first time in close to 20 years (2007), New Zealand premium organic F&B as well as the best of our high-end natural cosmetics are going to be represented, at the NZ Inc. level centre stage, with a national New Zealand pavilion, underwritten by the

Organic Exporters Association. Germany represents the second largest sales market for organic products worldwide, making it the logical market for New Zealand organic product exporters, with premium products. ■ Fruit

Logistica is the world’s most important trade fair for the fresh produce industry and its direct access to the global market. You can find the complete range of products, services, and technical solutions from every part of the value chain - whether in seed, fruit and vegetable development or packaging and automation. The fair covers the entire spectrum of the value chain - from the producer to the consumer. In addition to the three main segments Fresh Produce, Machinery & Technology and Logistics, important focal points at FRUIT LOGISTICA include Smart Agri and Greenhouse. This is a must visit for the horticulture sector.

n 2018, a visionary conversation with our CEO, Monique Surges, set the wheels in motion for the establishment of the GNZCC YPs (German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals group). Fast forward to 2023, and we find ourselves at a pivotal juncture with our YP initiative. In a demanding professional world where the pressures of work, maintaining friendships, and preserving personal well-being can be overwhelming, establishing a volunteer group of motivated young individuals has been no small feat. However, amongst these challenges, the importance of nurturing and fostering a network for the next generation of leaders cannot be understated. WELLINGTON: A VITAL HUB

GNZCC IN WELLINGTON

Nurturing connections and collaboration

A Main photo by Joao Marcelo Martins on Unsplash

s 2023 hurtles toward its conclusion, it’s hard to believe that the German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce (GNZCC) has officially been in Wellington for just under two years. In this relatively short time span, our presence in the capital city has been nothing short of a whirlwind, filled with challenges and remarkable progress. Wellington, as it turns out, operates on a different wavelength to Auckland, and we’ve learned that to succeed here, we must adapt our approach accordingly.

It’s important to note that the GNZCC is not a lobby group. Instead, our role is to bring together the right expertise and resources, ensuring they reach the right audience. In Wellington, with its diverse ministries and associations, we find the ideal platform to achieve this goal. The power of collaboration multiplies ideas and magnifies their impact.

WAVING THE GERMAN FLAG IN WELLINGTON

INVOLVEMENT OVER INSTRUCTION

Our primary mission in Wellington is to proudly represent German interests and advocate for collaboration between New Zealand and Germany, particularly in the fields of energy-efficient building and retrofitting, and renewable energy technologies such as hydrogen. Over time, we have diligently built up our projects to facilitate meaningful connections and knowledge-sharing opportunities.

While Auckland remains our headquarters due to its concentration of industries and companies, Wellington holds vast potential. It serves as a vital hub for generating momentum in advancing German interests, benefiting our members and fostering innovation and collaboration. Our commitment to Wellington’s growth and development is unwavering. However, we recognise that none of our achievements would have been possible without the support of key partners. We extend our gratitude to the Goethe Institute, which has graciously served as our Wellington home away from Auckland since day one. We are also indebted to our dedicated board members: Thomas van Raamsdonk from pro clima, Chris Griggs from baristers, and Barbara Nebel from thinkstep, whose unwavering support has been invaluable. As we look ahead to the future, the GNZCC is poised to continue making a meaningful impact in Wellington. We are committed to building a solid foundation in the capital

“Our commitment to Wellington’s growth and development is unwavering.” Lecturing people on what needs to be done is rarely effective. True progress comes from involving individuals and organisations in the process. This philosophy guides our work. This was especially evident in our successful May conference on “Healthy Homes for a Sustainable Future.” While the building and construction sector presented its challenges, our persistence paid off as we forged valuable partnerships which we are committed to further strengthening.

city, nurturing connections, and fostering collaboration that will benefit both New Zealand and Germany. Together, with the support of our partners and the boundless potential of Wellington, we embark on this exciting journey of growth and innovation. ●

G

ermany has more than 83 million of the world’s wealthiest consumers, and it is also the third largest importer of food & beverage (F&B) globally. Yet an enormous 80% of those F&B imports currently come from within Europe itself. We think it’s time Kiwi exporters have a slice of this pie.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

The German F&B retail landscape is consolidated and mature. The top four retailers have a market share of around 75% (Edeka, Schwarz Group, Rewe Group & Aldi Group). With one of the largest and most diversified food industries in the world, Germany benefits from a large and well-developed food processing industry, requiring a wide range of ingredients.

DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS

Germany represents Europe’s largest F&B market. German industry F&B production contributes 185 billion Euros to its economy each year, with another 227 billion Euros in annual retail sales. Conventional (premium) supermarkets in Germany attract consumers by continuously enlarging the product portfolio, focusing on a large fresh assortment, sustainable and regional products, format innovation and convenience. Hard and soft discounters in Germany include Kaufland, Aldi and Lidl. The buying process differs significantly between grocery retailers in Germany. Some are regionally organized (i.e. Edeka), whereas others purchase at the national level (primarily discounters). Post-covid, discounters are streamlining their product

YOUR GLOBAL

Germany’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food (BLE) released “Trendreport Ernaehrung” (Nutrition Trend Report) in 2023, which outlines an excellent summary of the key trends driving the industry. Germany’s food industry is highly receptive to new cultural influences and culinary trends. Several food purchase criteria are significantly more important to Germans when compared to New Zealanders. With increased health and environmental awareness and an ageing population, sustainably produced foods, plant-based meat and dairy alternatives and alcohol-free beverages have moved from the niche to key growth drivers. Finally, food retail has seen strong growth due to COVID-19 impacting consumer preferences.

CONCLUSION

Like most things in life, timing is everything. After many years of intense negotiation, the highly anticipated EU-NZ free trade agreement has now reached the final stages of ratification. Soon, NZ will benefit from preferential market access, including a cool $NZD 100 million in tariff savings from day one of it going into effect. That makes now the perfect time to stage your market entry. The GNZCC is the official representation of German industry and Trade in New Zealand. Partner with the GNZCC team to conduct research, develop your market entry strategy, network with other F&B exporters, exhibit at key international trade fairs and find new distributors. INDUSTRY OUTLOOK

All Eyes on German Healthcare

W

HEAVY INVESTMENT

The German government is investing heavily in the modernization and digitalization of hospitals. This has opened up niches that international companies can help fill.

This year, BioNTech is spending EUR 40 million to increase the capacity of its Marburg location. “Since the acquisition of our manufacturing facility in Marburg, we have continuously invested in the site to expand our manufacturing capacity and capabilities,” said Uğur Şahin, CEO and cofounder of BioNTech. “We plan to increase manufacturing of mRNAbased products for our clinical trials at the Marburg site while preparing for commercial manufacturing of personalized oncology therapies.” In other words, the company that helped contain Covid is turning its attention back to the disease in which it specialized before the coronavirus pandemic: cancer.

"The pandemic proved what Germany can do as a location for innovation and manufacturing of medicines." - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz STRONG GOVERNMENT SUPPORT

A key to the twenty-first century BioNTech is emblematic of the developments in German pharma, which enjoys the express support of the country’s government. On a recent trip to Marburg, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed the nation’s sense of pride in the industry, which he called “a key technology of the twenty-first century.” “The pandemic proved what Germany can do as a location for innovation and manufacturing of medicines,” said Scholz. “Germany and Europe are becoming more resilient by building local value chains.” Promising opportunities are already emerging for international

companies interested in the German market. But because Germany has established pharma, medtech and health clusters, leading research universities and scientific institutes, there is no need to completely reinvent the wheel. “New space and new infrastructure are being created all over the country right now to attract pharmaceutical companies with strong research and development capabilities, but also manufacturing companies, healthcare service providers and medical technology innovators,” says Gabriel Flemming, health industry expert at Germany Trade & Invest.

BIOPHARMA HOTSPOT

Europe’s biggest player, Genetically engineered mRNA drug development of the sort, done by BioNTech, is a highly innovative and high-tech discipline that has enabled breakthroughs in the treatment of diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatism, as well as respiratory illnesses and cancer. In general, biopharma is an absolute growth market: well over half of all newly-approved drugs are biopharmaceuticals. But the production of these innovative drugs is very demanding technologically. With the largest number of health companies in Europe, Germany is second only the US. “The industry’s strength comes from the presence of both established companies and start-ups,” says Flemming. “Industry, government and the research sector are working in the same direction to build on the sector’s already strong market foundations.” – Abridged from Germany Trade & Invest, Markets Germany, October 2023 Edition. ● ■ Germany Trade & Invest partners with the

ith a few mouse clicks, a specialist from the Charité University Hospital in Berlin can perform diagnostic checks on a patient in a small hospital hundreds of miles away. He does this using a telemedical robot made by the US company, Teladoc Health. It has remote controls connected to advanced cameras, lenses, sensors and microphones, enabling the doctor to perform basic clinical examinations. It can also be linked to diagnostic equipment like CT and MRI scanners. By integrating robotics with broadband, telerobotic treatment integrates robotics with connectivity and can help save the lives of patients with restricted access to specialist care. It’s one example of how German medtech is increasingly data-driven — and how international companies can benefit. One key is a major piece of legislation. The 2020 Krankenhauszukunftsgesetz (KHZG), or German Hospital Futures Act, has seen the government commit EUR 4 billion to modernizing Germany’s roughly 2000 hospitals. One focus is bridging gaps between town and country — a key use of Teladoc’s technology. “In Germany, just like in many other healthcare markets, we strive to support the creation of networks in which university hospitals in urban areas are able to provide expertise to smaller hospitals in rural areas,” says Thomas Geuenich, Teladoc’s General Manager Hospital & Health Systems International Markets. “The German market is one of the largest healthcare markets in Europe”.

BILDUNGSDESTINATION NEUSEELAND

Eine Erfolgsstory von Bildung und Beruf

E

New Zealand on his mind“. ● ■ www.studywithnewzealand.govt.nz
