Time Travelers

One of the coolest things about Las Vegas is its ability to take you back in time. After all, there’s a lot of power in nostalgia—who doesn’t want to go back to simpler times, when the priority was fun over responsibility? And this city excels at bringing the past back to life, even if only for an hour. This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is dedicated to some of the “time-traveling” venues you really should visit while you’re here.

Who hasn’t seen movies like Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby and wished they could have been part of that amazing, over-the-top scene?

Well, wish no longer, for Resorts World Las Vegas has created a world within a world at Gatsby’s Cocktail Lounge, where the glorious Roaring ’20s era comes to life through cocktails, ambience and an ever-rotating lineup of DJs to keep the party going (“Have a Roaring Good Time,” p. 24).

Few eras are more polarizing than the disco-tinged ’70s, but even its harshest critics couldn’t deny a simple fact: It was fun! And now at The Linq Hotel, Spiegelworld, the company that brought us Absinthe and Atomic Saloon Show, has re-created that era in every way possible, from the dance-themed DISCOSHOW to its accompanying ’70s-themed restaurant Diner Ross, a retro retreat where you can enjoy world-class cocktails and themed dishes (“Oh, What a Night,” p. 32).

Speaking of the ’70s, one of that decade’s hit producers, Ambrosia, comes to Golden Nugget for one night only of soulful, goose bump-inducing tunes (“Yacht Rock Revival,” p. 20).

Of course, there’s plenty “of the moment” events to enjoy as well, from WrestleMania 41 Week at various venues (“Can You Handle It?” p. 16” ) to The Magic of Jen Kramer at Westgate Las Vegas (“Magical Modes,” p. 12).

Past or present, we hope you enjoy your week!

Magical Modes

This endearing performer connects with all-ages Las Vegas audiences like no other

Time flies when your profession is your passion. For Jen Kramer, it seems like only yesterday she visited Las Vegas for the first time. Now she’s heading toward the 1,000th performance of The Magic of Jen Kramer at Westgate Las Vegas, with her career moving so fast the 10th anniversary of her arrival on the scene passed before she realized it.

“How could I have let a decade go by without throwing a party or something? I don’t know!” she says. “Missed opportunity there … It’s going to be 10 years from now in no time.”

Kramer was preoccupied with being in the moment at her 5 p.m. Westgate Cabaret shows, where her mix of magic and mentalism constantly creates new fans who line up after shows during meet-andgreets to share their enthusiasm about her signature quick-change trick illusion early in the performance and her new climactic trick.

The latter is the latest creation made possible by maintaining a fertile imagination. “That flow state is so real,” she says. “Sometimes when you’re exploring a different realm of magic like with the new finale that we’re doing in the show—it’s more grand illusion style—your brain starts thinking, ‘How can I apply this idea or that idea?’”

Not that Kramer is going to retire her oeuvre of card tricks, but an evolution into grand illusions would be a natural next step. She’s a veteran of the Strip’s magic scene now. The tricks she brought to Westgate Cabaret are increasingly enhanced by the possibilities she’s able to visualize based on the venue’s dimensions and capabilities.

“We wanted to do something big for the finale, so I’m making a big, sparkly purple motorcycle appear onstage,” she says. “It’s an absolute blast. It’s something very different than the material throughout the rest of the show, and that was part of the appeal of it for me, doing something than felt like a stretch and provided variety.”

It’s also the next step in Kramer’s goal of creating human connection through magic. “It’s all about making people feel like they’re 5 years old again, looking through that lens of wonder,” she says. –Matt Kelemen

What Can’t He Do?

From dancing and singing to rapping and storytelling, this master

showman does it all

Fans of Donny and Marie who have heard Donny Osmond speak lately would tell you his voice hasn’t aged since the variety show’s ratings reign in the late ’70s. Osmond, who celebrated three years and 300 performances of his Las Vegas Strip residency last summer, maintains his singing ability through a combination of good genes, healthy living and vocal exercises. And from boyhood stardom to teen idolatry through television successes and stage comebacks, his faithful fans have been there at every turn.

He raps. He reminisces. He’s complemented by a dynamic live band led by drummer Earl Campbell and dancing dynamos captained by superstar-in-waiting Miki Catherine. He also meets fans for preshow Q&As, where attendees are often repeat VIPs. Osmond covers his entire career from “Puppy Love” to “Soldier of Love.” That includes material from early ’70s Osmonds albums such as Phase III and Crazy Horses

“Phase III, actually I like that album,” said Osmond in an exclusive interview with Las Vegas Magazine hours before an early August show at Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. “What’s interesting is the Osmonds’ trajectory as a band was more rock ’n’ roll. I don’t know if I would go so far as heavy metal, although Metallica … James Hetfield said they used to do ‘Crazy Horses’ in their setlist. Metallica said this. Ozzy Osbourne told me it’s one of his favorite rock ’n’ roll songs of all time.”

Hetfield would have been 8 when Phase III cuts such as “Down By the Lazy River” were in heavy rotation on AM radio stations. That album’s proto-metal song “My Drum” may have been the heaviest track he was allowed to play in his home during his strict religious upbringing due to the Osmonds’ wholesome image.

“It’s really interesting when you think about the different styles of music that I’ve done,” said Osmond, whose “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from the Mulan soundtrack has been streamed on Spotify more than 333 million times. “Yeah, I was known primarily as a teenybopper … But it’s kind of a misconception as to who I was through the years that’s slowly eroding away.” –Matt Kelemen

Can You Handle It?

Wrestling’s best and biggest converge for an action-packed week

T-Mobile Arena is sure to be absolutely rocking from April 18-21, as WWE, which brings WrestleMania 41 Week to Las Vegas, has scheduled not one, not two, but three unforgettable events at the venue, which is sure to be packed with wrestling fans from all over the world.

The action begins on April 18 with Friday Night SmackDown, followed by NXT Stand & Deliver on April 19 and, finally, Monday Night Raw on April 21. Priority Pass ticket packages are available for fans who want to be ringside for every exciting moment with premium seating,

preshow hospitality with WWE superstar appearances, and more.

WWE has plenty more planned for fans the entire week:

WrestleMania 41 is being held at Allegiant Stadium on April 19-20.

WWE World offers up five days of WWE superstars, legends, exclusive merchandise, autograph and photo ops and immersive experiences from April 17-21 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

If this event is anything close to WrestleMania 40, in Philadelphia, Las Vegas is

in for record crowds. That event was the highest-grossing event in the company’s history, with 145,298 in attendance at Lincoln Financial Field over a two-night period, consisting of fans from all 50 states and 64 countries worldwide. Drink and Sink

Have a blast at this putt-putt party

Do like the Londoners do! Step inside an immersive world the Brits call “crazy golf,” basically mini golf courses mixed with cocktails, food and DJs. It’s a party on the course, of course!

“Las Vegas is the Entertainment Capital of the World and it’s been a long-held ambition to open Swingers here,” said co-founder Matt Grech-Smith. “It seems to fit the scene perfectly as, increasingly, people are looking for fun experiences that go beyond just eating and drinking (and gambling). We have opened our flagship location in Las Vegas—our best venue yet—and Las Vegas visitors have been enjoying making it a fun part of their day or night out on the Strip.”

The entire venue immerses guests in the English countryside. Multiple levels hold multiple ways to have fun. Four golf courses share two different levels. The nine-hole courses complete with grassy hills, Ferris wheels and cutesy décor give players a chance to experience a variety of challenges. Up on the top floor, guests can also enjoy a carnival atmosphere complete with old-school carnival games like ring toss and Skee-Ball in addition to a series of claw machines with cute plushies for prizes. The bottom level, complete with DJ booth, cushy seating and rocking, clublike atmosphere, is for those that want to party after hitting a hole in one!

To keep the party on lock, Swingers offers a huge menu of specialty cocktails, bottle service, beers and wines and champagnes. Standout cocktails include the Paloma Prima with Lunazul blanco tequila or Dos Hombres mezcal and a mix of Aperol aperitivo, Fever-Tree sparkling grapefruit soda and lemon juice and the What Happens at Swingers, mixed with Silver Dollar American vodka, Chinola passion fruit liqueur, Bisol Jeio Prosecco, passion fruit syrup, vanilla syrup and lime juice. Don’t sleep on Swingers’ food menu, too, especially the pizza, a Detroit-style pie, which Grech-Smith boldly claims might be the best pizza on the Strip! –Kiko Miyasato

Yacht Rock Revival

Hitmakers bring their soulful sound downtown

You thought mocking yacht rock elevated you above your hipster-elitist peers; then Ambrosia’s “How Much I Feel” invaded your Soft ’70s playlist and you realized exactly how soothing blue-eyed soul featuring layered vocal harmonies was. You wanted more, and dialed “Biggest Part of Me” and “You’re the Only Woman (You & I)” into your streaming rotation.

Then you found out Ambrosia was touring as a sextet with three original members, covered the Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour” and occasionally invited soft-rock legends such as Player’s Peter

Beckett to come onstage to perform his band’s chart-topper “Baby Come Back.”

Your takeaway should be that Ambrosia has embraced yacht rock and taken it to the next level. The band’s sets may be the only place to hear England Dan & John Ford Coley’s “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight” performed. It wouldn’t be surprising if they covered the Doobie Brothers’ “Minute by Minute” or Hall & Oates’ “Sara Smile.”

Diehard fans who own copies of Ambrosia’s self-titled debut album or 1978’s Life Beyond L.A. will not be disappointed

by the setlist, or a lineup including original members Joe Puerta on bass, drummer Burleigh Drummond and keyboardist Christopher North. The three Southern California musicians formed Ambrosia with singer-guitaist David Pack as a progressive rock outfit in 1970. By the latter half of the decade they were creating pop hits that provided the soundtrack to tequila sunrises. –Matt Kelemen

Magnificent Meals

If you are a fan of Italian food or plant-based eating, check this out: Crossroads Kitchen founder Tal Ronnen, James Beard award-winner Rocco DiSpirito and Top Chef winner Michael Voltaggio have joined forces to create a plant-based, five-course Italian dinner at the elegant Resorts World Las Vegas restaurant for one night only.

On April 17 from 5-10 p.m., indulge in such items as artichoke carpaccio, housemade foccacia, asparagus arancini, pasta nero with morel “calamari,” eggplant Milanese and croccante alle nocciole for dessert. Cost is $85 per person, and reservations are required.

If you don’t happen to score a reservation, do pop back in on another night, because Crossroads Kitchen features some of the most inventive vegan cuisine around. A spring tasting menu features four courses, with linguine scallops and eggplant short rib as the stars. And if you are more of a morning person, think about Crossroads Kitchen’s Sunday brunch from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. This buffet-style meal brings out some classic brunch dishes like chicken and waffles, bacon, pancakes plus pasta and desserts, all in a vegan format, of course.

If you can’t take advantage of one of those special menus, you will not go wrong with the daily menu. Definitely try the housemade Italian sausage, served with potatoes, onions and a tomato sauce. –Nina King

Have a Roaring Good Time

Nightlife venue features Great Gatsby-themed cocktails and experiences

This summer, Gatsby’s Cocktail Lounge will celebrate four successful years of nightlife at Resorts World Las Vegas. “Gatsby’s encompasses two different things; it’s a cocktail lounge focused on fantastic craft cocktails and then the atmosphere morphs into a high-energy lounge Thursday through Saturday in the evenings,” said Scott Diel, marketing director. “It’s really an ode to the 1920s, art deco, Roaring ’20s party scene with a focus on champagne and celebrating the finer things in life.”

The design and décor are chic and almost ethereal, with giant, color-changing orbs hanging from the ceiling. Plenty of seating including bar and high-top seating is available, and lounge seating with tables can be booked online (which is highly suggested on weekends).

The lounge is a laid-back social scene, but when 10 p.m. hits, the billowy white curtains close, the DJ takes the reins, the music gets louder and the vibes turn way up.

This is when a little party that never hurt nobody gets started. Begin with two favorite cocktails: the Daisy’s Sour (a mainstay on the Gatsby’s specialty cocktails menu) with Haku vodka, Lazzaroni amaretto, lemon and lime

juices, rosemary syrup, lavender bitters and egg whites; and the newly created Hibiscus Paloma with 818 blanco tequila, hibiscus syrup, fresh lime juice and Fever-Tree grapefruit soda. While Gatsby’s shines in handcrafted cocktails, the lounge is celebrated for its celebration of champagne,

offering 11 different vintages by the glass. “We offer a great list of vintage champagnes with approachable price points,” Diel said. “You’d find them at high-end, white-tablecloth restaurants, not something that you’d normally find at a cocktail lounge.” A great way to indulge in some bubbly is by ordering

Champagne flight

the champagne flight. Not only is the presentation beautifully bougie, but you’ll get four glasses of champagne— Lallier Réflexions R. 019, Ruinart Blanc de Blancs, Perrier Jouet Blason rosé and Beau Joie Sugar King, as well as a little side of Torres black truffle potato chips and sea salt dark chocolates. Presentations really go over the top with the secret cocktail menu (just look for the QR code on the regular menu). These cocktails are what helped give Gatsby’s its killer reputation as a Strip cocktail destination. If you haven’t

Gatsby’s once-monthly “Moët and Diamonds” celebrations are meant for puttin’ on the Ritz. Come dressed in your finest for a chance to win a crystalized bottle of Moët & Chandon. Check Gatsby’s website and social media for the next one.

Keep an eye on Resorts World Theatre’s calendar, as Gatsby’s often hosts themed nights based on the concert schedule.

spotted any of the secret menu cocktails on social media yet, one could argue you haven’t been on social media in years. “Not only are they fantastic-tasting cocktails, they’re built to party,” Diel said. “The secret menu is filled with really beautiful cocktails that are interactive and fun to party with.”

In a nod to the Great Gatsby era

where bathtubs were filled with gin, the Champagne Bubble Bath is a mix of Aperol and gin and juices, completed tableside with a pour of champagne and mojito-foam bubbles (some mini rubber duckies are added to the tub party).

Share the Get Out and Dance cocktail, the newest on the menu, with a group of friends, because a large disco ball is filled to the brim with vodka, juices and Red Bull and brought to the table with sparklers and flashing lights. “These cocktails are your Vegas social media moments,” Diel said.

Rounding out the Gatsby’s experience are light bites (served till 9:30 p.m.) from nearby eateries Wally’s Wine & Spirits and Kusa Nori. From Wally’s comes an assortment of cheese and charcuterie boards, and the Kusa Nori dishes include popular picks like the blue fin tuna tartare, hama crispy rice, wagyu gyoza and rock shrimp tempura. –Kiko Miyasato

Jessica Griffiths, model cocktail server at Omnia at Caesars Palace, has beauty and brains. Born and raised in Hawaii, she started her own shaved ice company at just 9 years old, and Maui Girlz Shave Ice is still going strong today. “I’ve been asked to franchise, but me and my family want to keep it local, keep the quality and customer service,” she says. And through her company she has led fundraising efforts to help feed underprivileged

Then, last year, she used her beauty to land a job as a cocktail server at Wet Republic before transitioning over to Omnia nightclub when pool season was over, beating out tons of other beautiful women for the coveted position. “I felt so fortunate that they recognized me,” she said. “It was like a dream come true.”

Edge Steakhouse continues a legacy of excellence

The property now known as Westgate Las Vegas has some of the biggest bragging rights of any property in town. When it was the International, it hosted the legendary Elvis Presley residency; Liberace’s longest-running Las Vegas residency was at the property when it was the Las Vegas Hilton; and Westgate Las Vegas now hosts Barry Manilow’s residency, which recently broke Elvis’ record for most performances. But the bragging rights don’t stop there for the property. It’s also home to one of the best dining experiences you’ll find in Southern Nevada: Edge Steakhouse.

You know you’re in for a special night the second you step foot into this restaurant. It’s a lush modern environment with dark woods and red plush seating, immediately making you feel relaxed and ready to enjoy world-class cocktails and cuisine.

Then there’s the service.

General manager Richard Douglas puts it best: “We have a collection of front and back of the house employees that have worked at this property for extended years. With this, a deep sense of pride and ownership has emerged within our establishment. ... Our staff’s passion resonates with guests,

leaving an unforgettable impression on everyone who walks through the doors.”

Before launching into an appetizer, make sure to check out Edge’s incomparable cocktail menu, with highlights including the Vegas Dream, a combo of Tito’s vodka, passion fruit, prosecco and a huckleberry

Wagyu strip, king crab Oscar-style

reduction, all served in a pomegranate sugar-rimmed martini glass.

Now your taste buds are primed for the fun to come. Start with appetizers like the beef tartare, so flavorful thanks to the combination of smoked bone marrow, cornichons, pickled shallots, shaved Parmesan, pickled beech mushrooms, truffles and a cured hen egg, all served with crispy grilled bread for spreading. The jumbo lump crab cake is deeply satisfying with avocado aioli, lemon crème fraîche and cucumber, while yellowtail crudo is light and tangy with avocado, radish, cucumber and lime, all in a jalapeno lime vinaigrette.

To heighten your experience even more, take advantage of Edge’s caviar service, where you get your choice of Kaluga or osetra accompanied by salmon roe, sabayon, champagne pearls, deviled quail eggs, lemon crème fraîche, crepes, blinis and brioche.

Entrées are where choices start getting seriously tough. Yes, you could opt for a classic like the 7-ounce filet mignon (medium-rare for us!), which you can get king crab Oscar-style for a serious flavor boost. But there’s also seafood vying for your attention here, from Ora King salmon, served with delicata squash, Romanesco, shishito peppers, cauliflower risotto and chervil beurre monté, to Alaskan king crab legs with a lemon beurre monté for dipping. And we’d be remiss if we didn’t include Mary’s Organic Chicken, a citrus-brined poultry lover’s dream served with cippolini onions, royal trumpet mushrooms, baby Brussels sprouts and garlic potato purée.

End your perfect night with a dessert like Tahitian vanilla crème brûlée or the Milk Chocolate Sphere, melted at your table to reveal a warm s’mores brownie, vanilla Chantilly, pecan praline and salted caramel ice cream!

Get ready for seriously vintage-inspired food and cocktails at the super-cool Diner Ross

Las Vegas needs Diner Ross like a dancing shoe needs a good sole. Disco moves can’t really be executed properly without a good foundation, and DISCOSHOW, Spiegelworld’s production adjacent to the restaurant, will likely leave guests craving calories before the next adventure of the evening. That’s where the cuisine at Diner Ross comes into play, with complementary cocktails supervised by Niko Novick, executive director of beverage for Speigelworld. When designing cocktails for Diner Ross, Novick faced the challenge of making a menu that pivoted from previous efforts for Superfrico and Ski Lodge at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, as well as creations for DISCOSHOW bars Glitterloft and 99 Prince.

“The cocktail menus at Superfrico, Ski Lodge, Diner Ross and 99 Prince are as different as a martini and a

They also have to go along with the food and décor, which would not be out of place in a Quentin Tarantino film set in the ’70s. Disco fries smothered in gravy can be ordered for the table right away before perusing the menu for executive culinary director Anna Altieri’s dishes of debauchery.

frozen piña colada, which is to say, they couldn’t be more distinct,” says Novick. “What ties them together, however, is an obsessive commitment to quality: the finest ingredients, the sharpest techniques, and a refusal to serve anything mediocre.”

“Diner Ross is built on nostalgia in every warm sense of the word,” says Novick. It’s deceptively simple, comfort-driven, and designed to remind you of flavors you forgot you loved, only now with much better booze.” Novick recommends a cocktail before dinner,

and wine with entrées such as Buffalo Chicken Schnitzel or Fancy Meatloaf. “And not just any wine,” says Novick. “Our list doesn’t just complement the food; it takes things to another level. In fact, it might just be the greatest wine list in any diner in the world. I dare you to prove me wrong.”

Dessert can be accompanied by the Bananas Foster Carajillo, made with brown butter, charred banana-infused Licor 43 and espresso. Espresso martinis are on the menu as well, but Novick is most enthusiastic about the first cocktail created for Diner Ross, the Midori Negroni. It was a reimagining of the classic Negroni with an ingredient from “the dark ages of mixology” prior to the second golden age of cocktails in the 2000s. Novick calls it “a drink so outrageous that even suggesting the idea in a serious cocktail bar could get you 86’d. Naturally, that only fueled my determination to make it happen, because nothing sparks creativity like the possibility of ruining your own reputation. It turned out to be the hardest cocktail to perfect, but I couldn’t be happier with the result.”

He’s pretty happy with his Smokey & the Bandit and Wallbanger concoctions as well, and made two tributes to early ’70s disco pioneer and DISCOSHOW influence David Mancuso. The Mancuso Margarita is the namesake, while LSD (Love Saves the Day) pays homage to the name of one of Mancuso’s parties with a mix of Tanqueray gin, Danish Aquavit, lime and Earl Grey yogurt.

Once you check into Circa Resort & Casino, you’ll have everything you’ll need and want for that perfect vacation. Journey with me on my own 24-hour stay (a staycation in my case) and read about some of the highlights and fun to be had at this amazing property located in downtown Las Vegas.

You can ask for an early check-in, but it’s not always guaranteed. We got lucky! We stayed in a that is anything but “standard.” Every room at Circa has a kingsized bed—we jumped onto the Serta Prestige mattress and sunk in … ahhh! A cool feature: A lot of the rooms have a Murphy bed! Owner Derek Stevens made sure all rooms o er a king-sized bed so everyone could feel royal! Technology reigns throughout the room. We adjusted the air and played music through our tablet and asked Alexa questions about the resort. The bathroom has dual vanity sinks (I set up my beauty tools right in front of the makeup mirror with special lighting) and the shower has a sizable built-in bench and luxurious bathing products.

You must see the property’s sports book, even if you don’t place bets. encompasses three stories with stadium-style seating, VIP booths and on-point service. We checked into one of the booths and ordered lunch. Menus from nearby Victory Burger & Wings Co. and Project BBQ are available. We noshed on the Hangover Burger piled with french fries, cheddar cheese, thick-cut bacon, caramelized onions, crispy onion straws, creamy blanco cheese, boom boom sauce and a fried egg; an order or boneless wings in sweet chili sauce; smoked Gouda mac and cheese bites; and fire-roasted elote in a cup. Indulging was joined by eye candy—nearly a dozen huge screens, nearly floor to ceiling, displaying all manner of sports.

Before we went back to our room to get ready for dinner, we made a quick pop into the lobby lounge, , to try some of the most inventive cocktails available downtown. (Plus, the historical Vegas Vickie’s neon sign is a must selfie moment).

My dining companion’s knife melted into the 8-ounce wet-aged filet mignon from Omaha Farms and filled in the rest of his meal with a side of decadent whipped Belgian potatoes and grilled asparagus with a lemon vinaigrette. Can we take a minute to talk about the dessert—each one is more than generous in its serving size. We delved into the banana cream pie and the sticky to ee butter cake … We should’ve started with dessert because buttons were popping; we couldn’t manage to put our forks down even though we were full—the recipes were that good!

We finished up the evening with some after-dinner cocktails and some of the best views of the city, checking in at the hostess podium and then heading into the elevator and up 60 floors to the always-a-good-time . A trip to Circa wouldn’t be complete without making it up to this rooftop hot spot. Bartenders here are often voted the best in the city (many of them are recipients of cocktail competition awards), so ask them to whip you up something special o the menu. We grabbed our cocktails and headed outdoors to the oversized lounge chairs surrounding a fire pit and gazed at the city lights and stars. Another great thing about Legacy Club? There’s a DJ that plays top 40 music. Party in plain sight or sneak into a corner booth or one of the outdoor firepits o to the side and make it a romantic date night.

We didn’t even have to get dressed or leave the room to enjoy some breakfast. We simply scanned a QR code that took us to the menu, Circa’s 24-hour diner-like restaurant. We ordered up Nate & Sally’s housemade vanilla-cinnamon French toast with house-made whipped cream, fresh berries and pure maple syrup, The Chief’s Smoked Salmon Platter with generous salmon portions, toasted bagel, cream cheese, capers, slices of tomato, cucumber and red onion, and the Saginaw’s Breakfast Sandwich, two eggs over medium, bacon, white cheddar cheese and Sam’s Sriracha mayo on a sesame brioche bun. The breakfast menu o ers so much more, and having Saginaw’s delivered to your room for breakfast blows the traditional room service meal options out of the water with its delicious options.

We checked out of our room and decided to spend our last hours at . We booked a daybed right alongside one of the six pools available and settled in for some sun and fun. A DJ keeps the music in party-vibes mode, and the 40-foot tall, high-def screen played that day’s basketball games. The multilevel pool complex o ers big cabanas, open lounge chair seating, a (huge!) cocktail and food menu and outdoor table games. Stadium Swim is a destination downtown, not just a hotel pool—you have to come to the hotel to check it out. You just pay a reasonable cover to get in and enjoy the facilities, even if you’re not a hotel guest.

There’s a behind the “Marilyn Monroe eyes” inside the high-limit area. You’ll need a reservation. (The concierge has details.) Don’t miss the at Barry’s Downtown Prime. A server brings the cart tableside to mix you up your choice of a Manhattan or Old-Fashioned. You’ll want to take out your phone to record this one. If you snag a inside Circa | Sports, you’ll have fun checking out the table. It’s covered in old Las Vegas advertisements and newspaper articles about sports betting. We cracked up as we read an ad for the Sundance Casino that o ered a breakfast bu et for 69 cents and a prime rib dinner for $3.95.

If you book a Circa suite on the 52nd floor, one of the coolest features is the , a specially created tome that shows renderings and tells stories of how the hotel was built.

In case you didn’t know, Circa o ers . is a behemoth drinking destination, spanning 165 feet with more than 50 seats, flair bartenders, 46 double-stacked TVs and more than 100 beers on tap. It’s Nevada’s longest indoor bar. It’s also where you might be lucky enough to spot owner Derek Stevens enjoying his drink of choice: Captain Morgan and Diet Coke.

Nobu Villa is the 10,300-square-foot crowning jewel of boutique Nobu Hotel at Caesars Palace

FLAWLESS FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, wall to wall and indoors to outdoors, the Japanese-inspired Nobu Villa exceeds all expectations of luxury living. With 5,600 square feet of indoor space— three bedrooms and four baths, common areas consisting of a media room, a sitting room, a formal dining room, a game space with pool table and an omakase sushi bar for private dining— the Rockwell Group-designed rooftop villa is only reached by private elevator. The 4,700-square-foot terrace, accessible through three different points from the villa, affords breathtaking views of the city lights up and down Las Vegas Boulevard and beyond. Outdoor living is easy with two shaded sitting-room spaces, daybeds and lounge chairs, with a hot tub inspired by a Japanese onsen tucked into a nook for more privacy.

Entertaining at Nobu Villa is divine, with an assortment of settings to choose from. With the 24-hour butler service, butler’s kitchen and pantry, guests are waited on hand and foot. Those who don’t want to dine downstairs at the famed Nobu restaurant can dine in the villa, where sushi chefs are able to whip up any dish from the Nobu menu. Guests can also celebrate on the terrace: The outdoor kitchen and bar—complete with robatayaki grill—make it the perfect spot for a party. Relaxation comes easy in the two outdoor covered living spaces, complete with sofas, lounge chairs, ceiling fans, flat screen TVs and adjustable lighting.

Throughout the entire villa, Japanese-inspired art pieces hold the gaze of guests, including an eight-panel art installation in the entry hall by Brooklyn artist Jill Hotchkiss. Each of the delicate scenes are sandblasted into wood and depicts a Japanese landscape outlined in gold paint. The two guest rooms, each with its own private bath and vanity, get lush touches of custom hand-painted wallpaper by De Gournay, with pastoral scenes including cherry blossoms and other foliage.

The master bedroom celebrates the tranquil side of the Nobu lifestyle while incorporating the most lavish features. The master suite comes with an en suite massage room, and French doors lead out to the expansive terrace with the Zen garden and hot tub. Adjacent is the master bath, reminiscent of a private spa with giant soaking tub, oversized shower, double vanity, sauna room and Japanese-style daybed.

Before he came to Las Vegas, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was known mainly for his mob ties, but once he bought up 95 shares of the Nevada Project Corporation (the company that built the Flamingo), he became associated with this city forever. Siegel came to Vegas in 1945 and took over the building of the Flamingo from businessman Billy Wilkerson, who ran out of money. So Siegel purchased the shares (seen here) for $250 apiece and opened the hotel in 1946. After the construction costs ballooned to more than $6 million, the hotel ended up closing only six months later and Siegel returned to L.A. Less than a year later, he was gunned down in his girlfriend Virginia Hill’s home—some say it was a hit ordered by the mob, revenge for losing all those millions they lent Siegel to build the Flamingo.

Dig

up

a treasure trove of gems at Nevada State Museum

Step away from the Las Vegas Strip and step inside the history of the Silver

State at the Nevada State Museum. In the museum, spread across 70,000 square feet that includes two exhibits (one permanent and one changing), in addition to a library and public spaces, discover the state’s history, from the prehistoric era to the more recent one when showgirls shimmied across the stage.

Take a self-guided walk through the permanent exhibit, which houses a mix of real pieces and educational, hands-on props. Discover the period when dinosaurs dominated the desert and read about Nevada’s indigenous animals and flora and fauna. Learn about the early life of the Native American population as well as the first adventurers that sought out gold and silver in the Nevada mountains. The hands-on props of mining towns, wagons and settlers’ camps add to the experience, with actual personal effects lending a personal touch. The timeline of Nevada’s history leads all the way up to the more current way of life with displays about the city’s atomic history, the historic Westside, Helldorado Days and the building of the Las Vegas Strip over the decades.

Across from the permanent exhibit is the changing exhibit, currently hosting The Old Spanish Trail: Connecting a Network of Paths, presented by the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. Visually sift through wall panels, textiles and artifacts that depict the arduous

journey that many took to trade goods between what is now New Mexico and Los Angeles. The Old Spanish Trail was established in 1829, made up of crude mule paths and footpaths through what is now South West Colorado, Northwest New Mexico, Southern Utah, Northern Arizona and Southern Nevada.

The museum is filled with a treasure trove of pieces with interesting backstories, and here we’ve pulled just a few for you to peruse … but we suggest getting over to the museum yourself to discover all the gems it houses.

Before the crowded skyline of Las Vegas that you see today, the city was only mountains and valley as depicted here, in what is believed to be the first painting of Las Vegas from 1876. It was painted by Frederick Dellenbaugh, a young adventurer from Ohio who was on a mapping expedition and stopped by the Las Vegas ranch (seen in the painting) that was set up for travelers going to and from California. Besides this artwork, Dellenbaugh would go on to write two books about the Colorado River and the American Southwest.

Nevada State Museum

309 S. Valley View Blvd. lasvegasnvmuseum.org

American actress Clara Bow was Hollywood’s “It Girl” of the 1920s silent film era, but by the mid-’30s she would call Nevada home. In 1931, she married fellow actor Rex Bell, and together they moved to Searchlight, Nev., to open a working ranch. Hollywood wasn’t left too far behind, though, as seen here in her personal address book, where she kept many a famous name and their contacts, including Gone With the Wind director Victor Fleming and some of the bigwigs at Fox Studios.

In the 1870s, many Chinese immigrants settled in Nevada to help work the mines and build the railroads. Being so far away from their country, many of the Chinese re-created their homeland in segregated areas often called Chinatowns. An important part of daily Chinese life included religion; houses of worship were built and called Joss Houses. Seen here are three actual drums used for ceremonial music played inside a Joss House in Elko, Nev., in the 1870s.

The man who helped build Las Vegas, Howard Hughes first visited the city in the spring of 1953 and took up residence in The Little Green House that now stands on the property of local news station KLAS Channel 8. While Hughes only lived in the house for a year, he left behind many of his personal items, like the ones seen here (even his enema bag!). The items were recently donated to the museum. And, fun fact, you can see the inside of the house if you watch the movie Casino (it’s the actor James Woods’ home)!

What is this?

The staff of Nevada State Museum needs your help! Is this fan and its information recognizable? Recently, the fan was donated to the museum, but little is known about its origins. It displays a name and address, 2123 Jackson St., in the Westside of the city. Is it from an old casino, nightclub, social club or speakeasy? What was once at that address? The staff has done some research and has not been able to make any connections, so if you know, they ask that you reach out to the museum!
