A Week to Remember

The Las Vegas Strip made history this year with the announcement of its fi rst-ever Spanish-language residency: Los Bukis at Dolby Live at Park MGM. It’s been a huge hit, with audiences packing the house to listen to music that’s been part of their lives for decades. It seems safe to say that this is only the beginning of Latin acts setting down roots in Las Vegas, a city that seems to rewrite entertainment history each and every year. And if you’re doubting that, check out the dizzying array of Spanish-language acts in town this week!

Mexican Independence Day celebrations are so plentiful in Las Vegas this week, there’s no way you could possibly see them all—more than 18 in total at properties all over town. We’ve highlighted some of them in this week’s issue (“Cultural Celebration,” p. 32), as well as focused specifically on one of the genre’s biggest stars, Luis Miguel, who plays several dates at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace (“Here Comes the Sun,” p. 40).

Adding to this week’s Mexican Independence Day excitement, boxing superstar Canelo Álvarez takes on challenger Edgar Berlanga in a title bout at T-Mobile Arena (“Ring Intelligence,” p. 38).

Elegance and Style

Asian restaurant serves up elevated Chinese dishes

While many of the items on Genting Palace in Resorts World Las Vegas may seem familiar to a casual fan of Chinese food, real admirers will find plenty of authentic dishes on the menu, as well as other Asian cuisines.

The upscale Chinese restaurant, decorated in black lacquer on the exterior and gorgeous green tones on the interior, offers dim sum dumpling choices such as pork and shrimp siu mai with shiitake mushrooms, seafood black truffle dumplings, har gow or a dim sum platter with assorted items. Classic appetizers like spring rolls (vegan) and wonton soup share the billing with braised bird’s nest soup with king crab legs and minced ham, and marinated cucumber with cloud ear mushrooms and garlic.

The well-rounded menu includes barbecue with applewood-smoked soy sauce chicken, barbecued boneless duckling and Macau-style roasted crispy pork belly, spicy three-cup chicken and a traditional Peking duck served with hoisin sauce and crêpes.

You’ll find Genting Palace is extremely proud of its seafood selection, and with good reason. Enjoy a variety of live offerings, everything from poached Santa Barbara prawns to Maine and Australian

lobster. But that’s just part of the seafood delights. Sweet and sour Chilean sea bass, wok-fried scallops with XO sauce, and the stewed whole Australian 2 head abalone & sea cucumber, a signature dish from chef Billy Cheng, may also pique your interest.

The wok-fried A5 Japanese wagyu beef tenderloin with black pepper sauce is another worthy signature item, while stir-fried shredded Angus beef is served with steamed butterfly buns. For pork, consider sweet and sour crispy Kurobuta pork with pineapple and pomelo. Vegetarians and vegans have several options while dining with their family and friends. The Sichuan vegan mapo tofu uses Impossible meat, while Sichuan eggplant also stars Impossible meat. If you simply can’t decide what to order because it all just sounds so good, a five-course tasting menu features such items as Maine lobster with three cup sauce, chilled duck salad with black truffle sauce, braised short rib, egg fried rice, crispy prawn with osmanthus and, of course, dessert. Now that’s a deal! –Nina King

History in the Making

Every performance by this legendary entertainer sets a new Vegas record

Barry Manilow never met Elvis Presley, but he did stay in the original Elvis Suite when Westgate Las Vegas was The Hilton. “It was an older suite, but it was huge,” Manilow told Las Vegas Magazine in an exclusive interview. “It was the entire floor, the entire 30th floor, so I did get a sense of where he actually stayed when he was there.”

The 30th floor was remodeled shortly after Manilow’s Hilton 1985 debut. He stays in the current Elvis Suite when he flies into Vegas for his Barry Manilow: The Hits Come Home shows. For Manilow, it was love at first sight when he saw the stage where The King reigned for 636 shows (last year, Manilow broke Presley’s record at the property). Arenas enable him to take his music to the masses, but he considers the stage and audience capacity at the International Theater perfect for what he does.

“I like traveling into the audience,” said Manilow. “I have trouble being as intimate as I want to be with an arena. It’s fun and it’s exciting, but it’s a whole different kind of feeling than the Westgate. The Westgate is the perfect room for me. Out of all the rooms that I’ve ever played, this is the one for me.”

Anyone who’s witnessed Manilow perform “Copacabana” at the venue would agree, as set design and a flight of stairs allow Manilow to perform above the audience as he sings of music, passion and fashion. It’s a place where Fanilows can make a pilgrimage to their favorite singer, where songs transport them to happier times and longtime fans dance as if the decades since “Daybreak” never happened. “These people are so happy, and they’re all ages,” said Manilow. “That’s why I still do it. Everything changed because I realized that’s why I’m on that stage. That’s why I’m there. It’s to make them feel great. It’s to make them forget their cancer and their divorces, and if they lost their job.” Mission accomplished, sir. –Matt Kelemen

The Legacy of a Lifetime

You’ve got to see this beloved performer’s impressive residency on the Las Vegas Strip

Fans of Donny and Marie who have heard Donny Osmond speak lately would tell you his voice hasn’t aged since the variety show’s ratings reign in the late ’70s. Osmond, who recently celebrated three years and 300 performances of his Las Vegas Strip residency, maintains his singing ability through a combination of good genes, healthy living and vocal exercises. And from boyhood stardom to teen idolatry through television successes and stage comebacks, his faithful fans have been there at every turn.

Osmond covers his entire career from “Puppy Love” to “Soldier of Love.” That includes material from early ’70s Osmonds albums such as Phase III and Crazy Horses

“Phase III, actually I like that album,” said Osmond in an exclusive interview with Las Vegas Magazine hours before an early August show at Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. “What’s interesting is the Osmonds’ trajectory as a band was more rock ’n’ roll. I don’t know if I would go so far as heavy metal, although Metallica … James Hetfield said they used to do “Crazy Horses” in their setlist. Metallica said this.

Ozzy Osbourne told me it’s one of his favorite rock ’n’ roll songs of all time.”

It was natural for Donny to return to the stage with Marie at the Flamingo after their daytime talk show ended. Now he’s on his own, revisiting his rock ’n’ roll roots five nights a week in a show co-created by stage director Raj Kapoor.

He raps. He reminisces. He’s complemented by a dynamic live band led by drummer Earl Campbell and dancing dynamos captained by superstar-in-waiting Miki Catherine. He also meets fans for preshow Q&As, where attendees are often repeat VIPs.

“It’s really interesting when you think about the different styles of music that I’ve done,” said Osmond, whose single “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from the Mulan soundtrack has been streamed on Spotify more than 333 million times. “Yeah, I was known primarily as a teenybopper … But it’s kind of a misconception as to who I was through the years that’s slowly eroding away.” –Matt Kelemen

Flight Path

Catch some of the most amazing views in Las Vegas

If you’ve never taken a helicopter flight before, Las Vegas might be one of the best places to try it. And Maverick Helicopters offers a variety of packages that not only give you a bird’s-eye view of the Strip, but also let you fly above the Grand Canyon or the wilderness beyond the city lights.

One of the most popular packages has to be the Vegas Views tour. It will whisk you up from Maverick Helicopters’ terminal at the south end of the Strip

for a 10- to 12-minute journey up and around the Strip, giving you magnificent vistas all the way. (The quicker nature of the tour means it’s easier to fit in on a tight schedule.)

If you’ve got a little more time, hop on board the Neon & Nature tour for a slightly longer ride, views of both the Strip and Red Rock Canyon, and a 30-minute landing looking over the valley. For something even more special, opt for a sunset tour. And, of course, if the Grand Canyon is

on your radar, Maverick Helicopters offers a variety of tours that encompass longer flights to the natural wonder and options for champagne landings (Wind Dancer sunset tour), and ones that include a landing at Grand Canyon West’s amazing Skywalk—a glass bridge cantilevered over the canyon—and Lake Mead (Skywalk Odyssey tour). –Nina King

City Legend

Long-time Las Vegas entertainer lets you into his life in residency show

To this date, one of my proudest moments as editor of Las Vegas Magazine was presenting Wayne Newton with an inaugural Las Vegas Magazine Hall of Fame honor during one of his shows in 2020. Newton could not have been more gracious as my publisher and I took the stage to sing his praises and take photos with the man himself. The show we attended, Wayne: Up Close and Personal, was at the time held at the intimate (and now defunct) Cleopatra’s Barge at Caesars Palace, but Newton has since taken the show to bigger environs at Flamingo, and he remains as gracious as ever.

Over those six-plus decades, the number of properties Newton has held court at are too numerous to mention here, many of them now demolished to make way for new properties (which Newton has also performed at!). Along the way, he’s dabbled in movies and television, recorded some enduring standards, established charities, entertained U.S. troops abroad, raised Arabian horses, and generally blazed trails wherever he went.

For each performance of Wayne: Up Close and Personal, Newton selects a specific moment in his history to focus on. It makes each show unique and rewarding for Vegas history buffs. After all, this is a man who’s been around for most of the city’s key moments. –Ken Miller

Three’s Company

Trio of lounges offer different vibes and cocktails, but all are a good time

Hospitality gurus 81/82 Group gives Las Vegas visitors three distinctive places to party— Juliet Cocktail Room , Electra Cocktail Club and Rosina Cocktail Lounge—all at one property, The Venetian. “You’re able to hit all three venues at various points throughout the day,” says Tristan Hibbs, 81/82 Group corporate mixologist. “I’d recommend starting off at Juliet and get those initial drinks in, talk with your group and then get into the night at Electra and have your fun, club-like experience and then cool it back down at Rosina.”

Let’s dive a little deeper into each experience:

In Juliet Cocktail Room, live music mixed with livelier cocktails is the name of the game. Stunning showpiece glassware gives drinkers an experience, especially when filled with uniquely

tasting concoctions like the popular Fruit & Basil. “It reminds me of a smoothie,” Hibbs says. The cocktail is a blend of Grey Goose Essences Watermelon and Basil vodka, fresh watermelon juice, fresh lemon, passion fruit liqueur and fresh basil. The vibes here are chic with a mix of masculine and feminine design, all kind of reminiscent of a sleek and sexy New York penthouse. And if you’re a fan of live music, this is the spot for you. “It’s that jazzy, bluesy, lounge-type music,” Hibbs says. If the concert just ended or dinner is done and you’re ready to party but don’t want to pay the high nightclub

prices, Electra Cocktail Club is your destination. “It’s more of our upbeat, club-type vibe,” Hibbs says. “High energy. There’s a DJ nightly.” While cutting that rug, order up a craft cocktail like The Viking Panther, dedicated to former NFL players Ryan and Matt Kalil, with the Carolina Panthers and the Minnesota Vikings, respectively. (It’s the venue’s most popular libation.)

The brothers are founders of Celaya tequila, and the popular spirit is mixed with Coco Lopez coconut cream, lime and Sprite. While more intimate than a big nightclub, Electra still exceeds in audio-visual delights; entire walls are

filled with high-def screens that display cool graphics, and in the middle of it all is a space dedicated to dancing.

The most intimate space of the three, Rosina Cocktail Lounge, almost feels like a romantic secret, and it’s dripping in opulent furnishings and moody lighting—this is the perfect spot for a date or a chill, upscale gathering

Tips/Insider Knowledge

At Juliet Cocktail Room, catch favorite Las Vegas performer Skye Dee Miles singing a host of jazz tunes every Sunday at 9 p.m. Every Tuesday at 9 p.m., join the Keys & Karaoke event, a live piano karaoke party.

At Electra Cocktail Club, enjoy specially themed nights like Frequency Latin Wednesdays at 9 p.m. with hot Latin beats, and Throwback Thursdays at 9 p.m. with a mix of throwback pop, hip-hop and rock. Every Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m., enjoy high-energy DJ sets that transform the room into a nightclub.

At Rosina Cocktail Lounge, there is a monthly Mixology Master Class; the next one takes place on Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. The class includes three crafted cocktails, plus one of your own creations with the help of the master mixologist.

of friends. It’s also the lounge with some of the best mixology happening in the city. “Our idea with Rosina was to be more mixologist-forward,” Hibbs says. “There are cocktails you can’t get anywhere else in the city.” And each cocktail is an experience, like The Passionate One. In the bottom of the glass is a sangria-like mix of Justin

sauvignon blanc, Licor 43, strawberry purée, passion fruit purée and mint, and placed on top is a vessel of fresh blackberries and raspberries which the drinker pours into the mixture before sipping. Rosina is also home to quite a collection of rare and coveted spirits, like the whole collection of Tequila Komos Extra Añejo.

“With the three spots, we wanted to bring you that Vegas experience and give you something you can’t get anywhere else,” Hibbs says. –Kiko Miyasato

From brunch to dinner, Brasserie B

Strip

Bobby Flay’s evolution on the Las Vegas Strip has truly been something to experience. His Mexican restaurant, Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace, was a hit for years, and

his expansion of his empire with Bobby’s Burger Palace at Aria was a smash. Bobby’s Burgers followed at Caesars Palace, and from there he launched Italian concept Amalfi by Bobby Flay (in the space previously occupied by Mesa Grill). His latest venture, Brasserie B by Bobby Flay, sits next to Amalfi, and it might be the celebrity’s best Vegas eatery to date. This French-themed establishment hits all the right notes, from the lovely exteri-

or’s sign that playfully bends toward you, beckoning you inside, to the bright interior with plenty of table and booth seating, not to mention a well-stocked bar, a raw bar and large separate area for larger parties. While the restaurant is open for brunch and dinner, it really stands out for the brunch menu, one of the few on the Las Vegas Strip to be o ered every single day of the week from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You’ll want to start your adventure here

Lobster avec frites

with the assorted pastries, an absolute steal at $21, considering you get four distinct and substantial baked goodies, including a chocolate croissant and a lemon-filled pastry. For a more savory start, try the yellowtail crudo served with tomatillo cucumber relish and caviar.

Entrées all have that Flay creativeness, especially the soft scrambled eggs, here mixed with chèvre and red pepper pesto, and the Omelette Basquaise, which focuses on quality over quantity; it’s relatively thin when compared to its wa e house equivalents, but the addition of onion, garlic, pepper, parsley pesto and chèvre makes every bite a special memory. Fans of French toast will love the pain perdu and its crispy, custardy texture, smothered with berries and whipped crème fraîche.

Given the wide-ranging time frame for Brasserie B’s brunch, you may want to opt instead for lunch-type fare like a sandwich, and if you’ve never tried one of Flay’s burgers, there’s no better place to start than the Bar Americain Burger, where the patty, cooked to your specifications, gets the duo of American cheese and Gruyère, as well as very crispy bacon (my personal favorite style!) to keep you

coming back for just one more bite … until it’s mysteriously gone. Pair this with the twice-cooked French fries, shoestring-cut and served with red pepper mayonnaise. If you’re thinking of something more along the lines of late-lunch or early dinner, definitely opt for the “Avec Frites” portion of the brunch menu, where everything from ribeye to whole lobster is grilled and served with those delicious fries. If you

need a bit more accompaniment, the macaroni Gruyère gratin is about as satisfying as a side dish can get. Just be sure to use both hands when lifting the container for this dense, decadent beast!

French-themed desserts are simply wonderful here, from the dark chocolate sou e with Grand Marnier sauce to the brown sugar butter crêpes with fromage blanc and citrus salad.

Squad has performed throughout the Mexican Republic and Carnegie Hall in 2020 (making him the first Latin comedian to do so).

T-Mobile Arena will be rocking for days with the arrivals of two distinct-sounding bands. San Bernardino-based Fuerza Regida (Sept. 15), composed of Jesús Ortiz

Paz, Samuel Jaimez, Khrystian Ramos, Jose “Pelon” Garcia and Moises Lopez, has enjoyed much success since forming in 2015, making a splash in 2023 with single “Bebe Dame” with Grupo Frontera. They’ve also recorded successful singles with Natanael Cano, Peso Pluma, Calle 24 and Marshmello. Speaking of Peso Pluma , he performs Sept. 12. And while he’s only 25, the Mexican singer brings an impressive song lineup, including “Siempre Pendientes,” a controversial duet with Luis R.

Mandalay Bay has a packed schedule, highlighted by Carin León (Sept. 14) of Grupo Arranke, who went solo in 2018 and saw his career get a significant boost after a video of him performing “A Través del Vaso” at a local festival in Hermosillo in 2018 went viral. Mexican pop band Matisse (Sept. 14) has been producing enjoyable music since 2014, from “La Misma Luna” and “Todavia” to “Primer Avión,” which featured Colombian

singer Camilo. Mazatlan-based Banda MS (Sept. 13), performing since 2004, have reached No. 1 on the Billboard Latin Albums chart (with album Qué Bendición). And Moenia (Sept. 8) is sure to get people dancing with its electronic/ synthpop/ambient music.

The Pearl at Palms promises an unforgettable evening with Ana Bárbara (Sept. 14), who’s been a powerful force in regional Mexican music since her debut in 1994. Her voice, combined with her stage presence, has made her one

of the few Mexican acts to have an international following, selling more than 6 million records in the process on the strength of songs like “Nada” and “Sacudeme.”

Over at Westgate Las Vegas, let the laughs fly with Cristela Alonzo (Sept. 15), star of the ABC sitcom Cristela that aired in 2014-’15 (she created and starred in it, making her the first Mexican-American woman to do so in the U.S.). Stadium Swim is

so many things rolled into an awesome experience

Stadium Swim at Circa Resort & Casino is truly unlike any other destination in Las Vegas. It’s a pool. It’s a sports-viewing haven. It’s a bar and restaurant. It’s a casino. It’s a lounge. It’s the gift that keeps on giving. If you have a Las Vegas itinerary, we urge you to add Stadium Swim to the list— it’s a must-see and must-experience for any visitor. “Stadium Swim—it’s surreal,” said EJ Stagner, director of Stadium Swim at Circa Resort & Casino. “It’s an environment that Vegas has never seen before.”

It’s a:

Pool. And not just one! Enjoy six di erent pools, and in the fall and winter months they are heated for maximum enjoyment—think big hot tubs! And don’t miss the swim-up bars. Sports-viewing haven. We bet you haven’t watched your favorite team on a massive 40-foot-tall, high-definition screen with 14 million pixels! With the kicko of football season, both college and NFL, Stadium Swim is the spot to catch a game. It is also a premier place to catch all UFC PPV fights. “We’ve really upped the game as far as sports-viewing is concerned,” Stagner said.

Bar and restaurant. You never have to leave the venue if you’re hungry or thirsty. Stadium Swim o ers a nice selection of signature cocktails like the Kentucky Tea, Orange Dreamsicle, Watermelon Wings, Jalisco Heat Wave, Ace Paloma, Bloody Maria and Barbados Blitz. There are also several frozen drinks machines churning flavors like mango, watermelon fresco,

frosé, piña colada and lemonade. You can also munch on a bevy of dishes including lobster corn dogs, nacho platter, Impossible sliders, chopped Cobb salad, crispy chicken Caesar wrap, breakfast burrito, charcuterie boards, fruit platters, shrimp cocktail, beef sliders and much more.

Casino. Got the itch to play a little bit? Stadium Swim o ers a nice, shaded alcove with blackjack tables.

Lounge. If you didn’t know, Circa Resort & Casino is a 21-and-over property. which makes Stadium Swim 21-and-over. So no kiddos running amok here! Local DJs take up the DJ booth every day, playing throwback, top 40s, hip-hop and much more. The beats are bumping and the mood is kept totally party. And there’s plenty of room to lounge on any of the three levels that make up the venue with

337 chaise lounges, 30 cabanas and 38 daybeds o ered for maximum comfort.

Gift that keeps on giving. While almost every pool in Las Vegas closes for the season, around the end of

October, Stadium Swim is still going strong—it’s open 365 days a year. And winter parties have become a hot spot for visitors, so make sure to check the property’s website for the next event, which in previous years has included

dance parties, DJ performances and festival-like fun.

“(Stadium Swim) is definitely di erent,” Stagner said. “I think it provides not only downtown but Las Vegas in general a great place for locals and tourists. It really gives you the best of both worlds—if you just want to come for the pool party and experience that or for sports fans this is really the only place in Vegas, in the country, to really experience watching your team.”

Gloved gladiator Edgar Berlanga seeks to dethrone super-middleweight king

Canelo Álvarez

Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez does things in his own way in his own time. As the former undisputed super-middleweight boxing champion continues to be serenaded by a chorus of hardcore boxing fans who want him to fight David Benavidez or Terence Crawford, Álvarez, pictured left, chose World Boxing Council interim light heavyweight title holder Edgar Berlanga as his opponent as part of Mexican Independence Day celebrations. In order to fight the Brooklyn-born Nuyorican challenger, he had to give up one of his belts.

It’s a huge opportunity for Berlanga, who promises gladiator combat in the ring as he vies for Álvarez’s WBC, World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organization belts, as well as the championship awarded by boxing magazine The Ring. Álvarez

was stripped of his International Boxing Federation title when a mandatory defense against No. 1 IBF contender William Scull remained unfulfilled by the time the Berlanga match was announced. Berlanga successfully triggered Álvarez’s ire during the prefight Los Angeles press conference, albeit it in somewhat clumsy fashion. Berlanger started fighting at age 7, shortly before Álvarez followed in his older brothers’ footsteps and began compiling victories as an amateur in the mid2000s. Like Cuba’s Scull, he’s undefeated with 17 knockouts in 22 professional fights, but relatively untested compared to Benavidez or Crawford.

This will be Álvarez’s 66th fight and 62nd victory if he prevails, which would statistically benefit his home country in the long-

standing rivalry between fighters of Puerto Rican and Mexican heritage. Berlanga has seven years less life experience than Álvarez but is nearly 6 inches taller and has a slight reach advantage. He fought as a super-middleweight in February, clocking Ireland’s Pádraig McCrory in the sixth round of their Orlando match.

in the undercard in a match and was present at the LA press conference, into the mix. The unflappable Álvarez responded by assuring Plant that he’d finish the fight in the ring.

Álvarez’s feud with Saudi royal adviser Turki Alalshikh had been getting more attention before Berlanga’s provocations.

Álvarez is another story. He’s Berlanga’s toughest—as well as most high-profile—opponent to date. Berlanga seemed chill during the press tour stop in his New York home territory but became belligerent in LA, promising to break the champion’s nose and repeatedly telling him to shut up while taking steps toward him.

5 p.m. Sept. 14, starting at $305 plus tax and fee. axs.com

Alalshikh, who likes to make things happen fast, wants Álvarez to fight Crawford or Benavidez pronto.

Álvarez takes his time to make decisions about who would be the best adversary for a big fight event weekend in Las Vegas that can fill T-Mobile Arena.

“You have problems,” responded Álvarez. “You have so many problems. You are going to be in so much pain.”

Berlanga tried to bring Caleb Plant, who faces Trevor McCumby

Dubbed “The Chosen One,” Berlanga sees this fight as not just a shot at four titles but at immortality as well. He’d be the King of Puerto Rico, the birthplace of his parents. All he has to do is withstand Álvarez’s devastating liver punches.

Luis Miguel brings the momentum of his career upswing to the Strip

If anyone was born to sing, it’s Luis Miguel. His first album was released when he was 11, and he won his first Grammy at 15 before he became an adult heartthrob. His career received a huge boost in the late 2010s when his life was turned into a television series, which paved the way for his current worldwide tour that began more than a year ago and runs through November. The Sun of Mexico is shining as brightly as ever.

That nickname originated with his mother, who referred to young Luis as “mi sol.” Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to an Italian mother and Spanish father. In Netflix’s Luis Miguel: The Series, Luisito Rey is a struggling musician in Mexico given advice to adapt to the culture’s appetite for entertainment. Rather than add clothing-deficient dancers to his act, he puts his son forward as a talented novelty.

The novelty wore off quickly, giving way to a career. Miguel’s 1982 debut album Un Sol became

9 p.m. Sept. 12, 14-15, starting at $216 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com

a gold record and yielded the hit “1+1=2 Enamorados,” which opened the door to extensive touring. By age 15, he took second place at Italy’s Sanremo Festival with “Noi Ragazzi Di Oggi” and won his fi rst Grammy for a duet with Sheena Easton, “Me Gustas Tal Como Eres.”

Miguel recorded in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, cultivating an international fan base through his teen years. He’d have his biggest smash in 1987 with “Ahora Te Puedes Marchar” from his fi fth studio album Soy Como Quiero Ser The adaptation of Dusty Springfield’s 1960s hit “I Only Want to Be with You” stayed on the charts for 34 weeks and was followed by 15 more No. 1 songs and 39 Top 10 hits to date.

His biggest album before Billboard began tracking Latin albums would come three years later. 20 Anos was a huge success, with most of its songs receiving radio play and singles “Entrégate” and “Tengo Todo Excepto a Ti” reaching No. 1. Miguel subsequently evolved his

image, becoming the dapper, debonair vocalist his fans know today. He recorded a duet with Frank Sinatra, made mariachi music and dedicated albums to Italian songs.

It wasn’t all peaches and cream, as the Netfl ix series depicts. His mother disappeared in 1986. His father manipulated his career and interfered in his love life. Eventually the spotlight turned to other performers, although Miguel’s recordings and tours continued to be successes.

It was the success of Luis Miguel: The Series that put him back high on top. He lost weight that he had been criticized for and embarked on a massive tour in support of 2017 album ¡México Por Siempre! His streams on Spotify shot up. His last shows before the pandemic were in Las Vegas at the Colosseum inside Caesars Palace.

Miguel returns to the Colosseum after spending the summer touring Spain and Mexico, where he’ll return for the fi nal run of concert dates. Then it’s up to The Sun to decide how he will shine next.

Before he came to Las Vegas, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was known mainly for his mob ties, but once he bought up 95 shares of the Nevada Project Corporation (the company that built the Flamingo), he became associated with this city forever. Siegel came to Vegas in 1945 and took over the building of the Flamingo from businessman Billy Wilkerson, who ran out of money. So Siegel purchased the shares (seen here) for $250 apiece and opened the hotel in 1946. After the construction costs ballooned to more than $6 million, the hotel ended up closing only six months later and Siegel returned to L.A. Less than a year later, he was gunned down in his girlfriend Virginia Hill’s home—some say it was a hit ordered by the mob, revenge for losing all those millions they lent Siegel to build the Flamingo.

Dig up a treasure trove of gems at Nevada State Museum

Step away from the Las Vegas Strip for a spell and step inside the history

of the Silver State at the Nevada State Museum. In the museum, spread across 70,000 square feet that includes two exhibits (one permanent and one changing), in addition to a library and public spaces, discover the state’s history, from the prehistoric era to the more recent one when showgirls shimmied across the stage.

Take a self-guided walk through the permanent exhibit, which houses a mix of real pieces and educational, hands-on props. Discover the period when dinosaurs dominated the desert and read about Nevada’s indigenous animals and flora and fauna. Learn about the early life of the Native American population as well as the first adventurers that sought out gold and silver in the Nevada mountains. The hands-on props of mining towns, wagons and settlers’ camps add to the experience, with actual personal effects lending a personal touch. The timeline of Nevada’s history leads all the way up to the more current way of life with displays about the city’s atomic history, the historic Westside, Helldorado Days and the building of the Las Vegas Strip over the decades.

Across from the permanent exhibit is the changing exhibit, currently hosting Greetings from Las Vegas: Growth of a City Through Postcards. Take a trip through Vegas’ past through the extensive postcard collection on display. The diverse collection

lays out an intriguing timeline of how the city transformed from a desert and sparse valley to a top tourist destination. Check out scenes of downtown decades ago and snapshots of old motels and hotels; and read about the early communities and how they helped shape

the Entertainment Capital of the World.

The museum is filled with a treasure trove of pieces with interesting backstories, and here we’ve pulled just a few for you to peruse … but we suggest getting over to the museum yourself to discover all the gems it houses.

Before the crowded skyline of Las Vegas that you see today, the city was only mountains and valley as depicted here, in what is believed to be the first painting of Las Vegas from 1876. It was painted by Frederick Dellenbaugh, a young adventurer from Ohio who was on a mapping expedition and stopped by the Las Vegas ranch (seen in the painting) that was set up for travelers going to and from California. Besides this artwork, Dellenbaugh would go on to write two books about the Colorado River and the American Southwest.

Nevada State Museum

309 S. Valley View Blvd.

American actress Clara Bow was Hollywood’s “It Girl” of the 1920s silent film era, but by the mid-’30s she would call Nevada home. In 1931, she married fellow actor Rex Bell, and together they moved to Searchlight, Nev., to open a working ranch. Hollywood wasn’t left too far behind, though, as seen here in her personal address book, where she kept many a famous name and their contacts, including Gone With the Wind director Victor Fleming and some of the bigwigs at Fox Studios.

In the 1870s, many Chinese immigrants settled in Nevada to help work the mines and build the railroads. Being so far away from their country, many of the Chinese re-created their homeland in segregated areas often called Chinatowns. An important part of daily Chinese life included religion; houses of worship were built and called Joss Houses. Seen here are three actual drums used for ceremonial music played inside a Joss House in Elko, Nev., in the 1870s.

The man who helped build Las Vegas, Howard Hughes first visited the city in the spring of 1953 and took up residence in The Little Green House that now stands on the property of local news station KLAS Channel 8. While Hughes only lived in the house for a year, he left behind many of his personal items, like the ones seen here (even his enema bag!). The items were recently donated to the museum. And, fun fact, you can see the inside of the house if you watch the movie Casino (it’s the actor James Woods’ home)!

What is this?

The staff of Nevada State Museum needs your help! Is this fan and its information recognizable? Recently, the fan was donated to the museum, but little is known about its origins. It displays a name and address, 2123 Jackson St., in the Westside of the city. Is it from an old casino, nightclub, social club or speakeasy? What was once at that address? The staff has done some research and has not been able to make any connections, so if you know, they ask that you reach out to the museum!
