REALITY GAYS

If last year’s BravoCon proved anything, it’s that there’s a market for trashy reality TV. Two of our favorite queens, who encapsulate everything we love about this messy genre and its fandoms, are Jake Anthony and Matt Marr, stars of the hit podcast Reality Gays with Mattie and Poodle. Together, this sassy pair unpacks all the petty that shows like Netflix’s Love Is Blind and TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé have to o er for their fellow “sissies.” If you’ve ever obsessed about the cutest couples in the pods or the cringiest throuple in Seeking Sister Wife, you’ll adore this duo even more live. Knowing how Anthony and Marr, both licensed therapists, ri o each other, breaking into song whenever they see fit, this’ll be a night you’ll want to play back. 7:30 p.m., $35-$75, Wiseguys Town Square, wiseguyscomedy.com. –Amber Sampson

MOUNTAIN FEST

ALICE GLASS

Alice Glass, former frontwoman of the electronic dance duo Crystal Castles, is noted as one of the most eccentric and recognizable performers from the realm of underground techno. Early in her career, Glass unapologetically rode a wave of mania, throwing her body into her audience, chugging whiskey on stage and shrieking her vocals into a tone-altered mic. Since going solo in 2014, the singer and songwriter has continued to prevail and released a self-titled EP in 2017, the album Prey//IV in 2022, and the single “Drown” this past April. Glass’ abrasive, yet ethereal vocals contrast with the notes of hyperpop in her solo discography, and while times, music and aesthetics have changed, she never lost her edge. With Pilo, Evelyn Scythe, Brock G & A.C. Esme, AJXO, 8:30 p.m., $25, the Portal at Area 15, area15.com.

–Gabriela Rodriguez

You know what would help beat the Vegas heat? An escape to the mountains and live music. Lee Canyon’s first Mountain Fest kicks o at Rabbit Peak with blues group the Smokestacks, followed by solo musician Jonny Hazard and local reggae band ST1. With the purchase of a cup, guests can access a craft beer tasting inside Hillside Lodge’s Bristlecone Bar with 16 options from local and national breweries. They can also participate in Lee Canyon’s annual crosscut log-sawing competition and purchase passes for scenic chair rides. Clark County Commissioners approved an $80 million settlement to end their yearslong legal battle with developer Gypsum Resources and owner Jim Rhodes, giving Gypsum the green light to move forward on a residential project that will erect 3,500 homes near Red Rock Canyon and Blue Diamond Hill. ¶ The agreement is contingent on the Bureau of Land Management agreeing to divert tra c from Scenic Route 160 to Scenic Route 159. ¶ It ends the legal saga, where a Clark County District Court judge determined county o cials intentionally destroyed documents to thwart the housing plans. Commissioner Justin Jones, who served as Save Red Rock’s attorney prior to becoming a commissioner, was accused of deleting text messages. Jones didn’t vote during the motion to approve the agenda item on June 18. ¶ Opposers of the settlement gathered within the Clark County Government chambers to voice their concerns. Save Red Rock, which has fought against the Gypsum Resources development since the early 2000s, urged commissioners to “keep Red Rock rural” and not approve the million-dollar settlement. –Grace Da Rocha

A Clark County District judge on June 21 approved a motion dismissing the charges against six Nevada Republicans who were accused of submitting “fake elector” ballots in a scheme to swing the 2020 presidential election for Donald Trump.

Judge Mary Kay Holthus ruled that Clark County was not the appropriate court venue to decide the case, noting the submission of the false records occurred in Douglas County in Northern Nevada.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford made it clear his o ce planned to continue pursuing the case, expressing displeasure with the ruling.

Defense attorneys bluntly declared the case dead, saying that to bring it now before another grand jury in another Nevada county would violate a three-year statute of limitations

that expired last December.

That apparently makes an appeal by Ford’s o ce the last chance for prosecution.

Nevada GOP chairman Michael McDonald, Republican Party national committeeman Jim DeGra enreid, vice chairman Jim Hindle, Clark County Republican chairman Jesse Law, Eileen Rice and Shawn Meehan are the defendants in the case.

On Dec. 14, 2020, the Republicans conducted a ceremony in Carson City in which they signed a document “certifying” Nevada’s six electoral votes for Trump, even though Democratic nominee Joe Biden won the state by about 30,000 votes.

The Nevada Republican Party sent the document—titled “Certificate of the Votes of the 2020 Electors from Nevada”—to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Republicans in a handful of states went through

a similar process—all with the same misleading and potentially criminal logic.

The meeting of fake electors, here and in the other five contested states, had no legal standing. Nevada’s real electors had already certified the state’s election results that same day in a remote ceremony, rightfully awarding all six of Nevada’s electoral votes to Biden.

Fake electors have been convicted in Michigan, and face charges in Arizona and Georgia.

Defense attorneys led by McDonald’s lawyer, Richard Wright, contended that Ford improperly brought the case before a grand jury in Las Vegas instead of Carson City or Reno.

The judge ultimately decided that even though McDonald and Law live in Clark County, “everything took place up north.” –Ayden Runnels. Associated Press contributed to this story.

Life Is Beautiful has announced a “new format” of festival for its 2024 installment. A Big Beautiful Block Party is set for September 27-28 in Downtown Las Vegas, “just a five-minute walk from the Arts District, the East Fremont Entertainment District and the iconic Fremont Street Experience.”

“The two-day party … is a unique return to the festival’s roots, o ering a more close-knit experience set against the vibrant backdrop of the city’s Downtown heart,” reads a news release from the festival.

The lineup, substantially smaller compared to the festival’s past years, includes Badbadnotgood, Jamie XX, Jungle, LCD Soundsystem, Thundercat, Toro y Moi and more. Tickets go on sale June 27 at lifeisbeautiful.com. General admission passes start at $199 and VIP passes start at $399. –Sta

‘ IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO’

Astrid Silva, an undocumented Las Vegas resident and founder of the nonprofit Dream Big Nevada, which advocates for immigrants, said the executive action announced June 18 allowing some noncitizen spouses and children of a U.S. citizen to apply for permanent U.S. residency without having to leave the country was “incredible” news.

“This is obviously a great step that the administration is taking, and it’s also the right thing to do—just bottom line,” she said.

Those eligible for the process have, on average, already resided in the U.S. for more than two decades, according to the White House. Biden’s executive action will protect an estimated half a million spouses of U.S. citizens, and approximately 50,000 noncitizen children under the age of 21 with a parent married to a U.S. citizen, the White House said in a fact sheet.

There are about 15,000 DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals)-eligible recipients in Nevada, according to the Higher Ed Immigration portal. Immigrants with DACA status temporarily live and work in the United States, but the status does not o er a path to gain permanent legal residence or citizenship. –Katie Ann McCarver

LEGACY LIKE NO OTHER

Westgate celebrates its team and 55 years of Las Vegas memories

This year marks the 25th anniversary, or birthday—however you’d like to describe it— for some monumental Las Vegas Strip resorts. Mandalay Bay celebrated in March, Venetian in May and Paris will party in September. The Cromwell (formerly Barbary Coast and Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall) opened 45 years ago, and in December Aria will hit its 15-year mark.

Just east of the Strip, however, an older, yet equally iconic casino property is celebrating 55 years of life in Las Vegas in July, and its unique history cannot be compared to the others.

For the last decade, it’s been Westgate Las Vegas, owned and operated by timeshare developer David Siegel. It originally opened on July 2, 1969 as the International Hotel, the first of three times that legendary businessman Kirk Kerkorian created the world’s largest hotel in Las Vegas. In 1971, Hilton Hotels took over and the Las Vegas Hilton came to life, continuing Elvis Presley’s historic residency and eventually adding hundreds of hotel rooms and a sports and entertainment pavilion. Another change in ownership resulted in a temporary rebranding as LVH in 2012, until Westgate purchased the resort.

When Siegel acquired the sprawling property that had fallen from

relevancy, “he had every opportunity to close it down, and everyone encouraged him to do so because it needed serious renovation after having been LVH,” says Westgate president and general manager Cami Christensen. “But he went around the property and saw all these tenured team members who had given their lives to this property, and he was adamant about doing those renovations and keeping everyone employed.”

Westgate currently has a handful of team members who’ve been working there since the era when Kerkorian opened and operated the International, Christensen says, as well as 70 workers who’ve been around since the Hilton period 40plus years ago, and more than 200 workers who’ve logged more than 30 years at the property, during the time when Colony Capital was its operator.

There are Vegas casinos that maintain many more “day one” employees than you might suspect, but

few of them stretch back through six decades. Westgate hasn’t just changed its name through its lifetime; one could argue it has operated as at least three different kinds of casino resorts, with different identities and priorities. And that’s a unique accomplishment worth celebrating, which is what the entire team will be doing on July 31.

“If you have ever worked on this property whether it was the International, the Hilton, LVH or Westgate, you’re invited,” Christensen says of the 55th anniversary party— really more of a reunion. There will be live entertainment, food and drinks, and lots of memorabilia and photos documenting this piece of

Las Vegas history. “We think it’s going to be a nice tribute to the people who made this property what it is.”
Some of the biggest names in entertainment also helped make it

what it is, including Elvis, Liberace, Chuck Berry, Duke Ellington, Louis Prima, Tony Bennett, Shirley Bassey, Johnny Cash, Wayne Newton, Reba McEntire, and today’s record-breaking headliner, Barry Manilow. Westgate hasn’t just renovated the hotel rooms and various casino spaces; the company has emphasized a dedication to continuing the property’s grand entertainment legacy by adding new shows that connect to the Vegas of old, as well as additional concerts in the historic International Theater (Kool & The Gang, Gin Blossoms, Don Felder, A.J. Croce and more).

In the current Vegas landscape where sports and sports betting are as dominant as any entertainment offering, Westgate paints a fascinating figure. Opened in 1986, the casino’s SuperBook continues to be one of the most respected, popular and influential sportsbook operations ever established in Las Vegas, still competing with much more modern and expensive facilities. And the property has a significant if lesser known history of hosting sporting events, especially boxing at that pavilion. Mike Tyson fought several times there during the Hilton era, and the 1978 Leon Spinks split-decision victory over Muhammad Ali is one of the sport’s most legendary upsets.

While Westgate has made plenty

THE STRIP

of updates and upgrades in the past 10 years, plenty of elements remain from bygone eras that create a sense of history and nostalgia. That’s not frequently the case at the other Vegas resorts that were built in the city’s early years.

“All of us have some kind of nostalgic piece that we’d like to be able to go back to, and there are a lot of people who came here to see Elvis or Liberace when they were [young] and they’ve come back to this property,” Christensen says.

“The other day I ran into a couple celebrating their 50th anniversary because they were married here, and they were coming back because it was so special. It’s so important to us that we can create some version of that feeling they had, so they leave here feeling the same way, that this place is special. It may not be a new, billion-dollar property, but you want them to feel like they are part of this family.”

Alex Pereira,

organization, and both picked up where they left o in the octagon.

Alex Pereira wouldn’t go anywhere without his UFC title belt after rst becoming a champion, until he got an image of it tattooed across his entire right underarm.

Jiří Procházka found motivation in his last ght from opponent Aleksandar Rakic calling him, “a fake samurai,” and vowed to let him know, “who I am in the cage.”

Pereira is one of 10 ghters in UFC history to win championships at two di erent weight classes. He initially captured the light heavyweight belt in November of last year by knocking out Procházka in the second round of the main event of UFC 295 at Madison Square Garden.

Procházka went on to viciously knock out Rakic in the second round of their bout at UFC 300, a few ghts before Pereira did the same to Jamahal Hill in the night’s main event.

No one expected a rematch to come this quickly, but the pair’s diligence in nonstop training and wishes to stay active made them a natural option for a short-notice replacement when McGregor o cially pulled out 16 days before ght night.

Pereira didn’t even want to wait this long for his next ght. After beating Hill in April, he publicly asked for the UFC to let him headline a card in May in his native Brazil.

There’s no question ghting and a drive to be the best is the sole focus for Pereira and Procházka—the pair that now faces o in the main event of UFC 303 on June 29 at T-Mobile Arena—at this point of their careers.

The same can’t be said for UFC 303’s originally scheduled main event between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler. McGregor broke a toe in training camp to nix his long-awaited return ght slotted as the capper to the UFC’s annual International Fight Week.

“I want to keep ghting,” Pereira said through a translator after UFC 300. “You have to be challenged. When we train for a ght, we know there’s a great challenge ahead of us and I’m motivated by everything that’s happening right now. It makes me evolve and do my best.”

Procházka, a native of the Czech Republic, employs a similar mindset. He’s been an outspoken practitioner of bushido, a moral code based on the principles of samurais dating back more than 500 years ago.

McGregor remains the biggest star in combat sports, so it’s inevitable that the card lost a lot of luster without him. Pay-per-view sales and worldwide media coverage of UFC 303 will now be down precipitously.

But UFC 303 probably wound up with a better ght because of the rst cancellation of McGregor’s career—he used to pride himself on never pulling out of a ght regardless of the circumstances.

He forgave Rakic for mocking the lifestyle after his last ght and explained what it meant to him.

No one knew what to expect from the 35-year-old McGregor after he hadn’t fought in three years and seemed to be spending more time in clubs and on his yacht than in the gym, based on social media posts. The 38-year-old Chandler had also been inactive since November 2022 as he waited and held out hope for a chance to face McGregor and bene t from the massive payday that accompanies it.

No one knew what to expect from the 35-year-old McGregor after he hadn’t fought McGregor panies it.

A rematch between the 36-year-old

“Our brain, our minds need to understand our lives and what we’re doing, why we are doing that, by some theory, some ideas,” Procházka told MMAFighting. com. “These ideas about bushido moral code help me to be honest to the way that I’m following. That’s all. You have to nd something that resonates with you, and samurai ideas resonate with me.”

The warrior mentality is even more inherent in Pereira, whose grandparents were part of Brazil’s indigenous Pataxó tribe that battled the Portuguese in the 1500s.

One of the many places Pereira brought his initial UFC championship belt, and now also his second, was the Pataxós’ reservation outside of Bahia, Brazil. Pereira continues to wear traditional Pataxó headwear and face paint during weigh-ins before his ghts.

A rematch between the 36-year-old Pereira and 31-year-old Procházka for the UFC’s light heavyweight title holds no such concerns regarding quality. Both strikers have shown an obsession with building their legacies since breaking into the UFC relatively late in their careers, within the last four years.

Pereira had previously established himself as a world-class kickboxer while Procházka was a champion in Japan’s Rizin

The UFC annually aims to celebrate its ghting spirit, multicultural appeal and global reach with International Fight Week. There’s not a better matchup that ts all the criteria than Pereira vs. Procházka.

The Justice Department made headlines when it took the unprecedented step of removing cannabis from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act, where it was listed alongside heroin, ecstasy, and peyote, and reclassifying it to Schedule III, a category reserved for substances with low abuse potential and accepted medical benefits.

This is, by all accounts, one of the most significant policy advancements for legal cannabis since states first began to legalize it for adult use in 2014.

And while the rescheduling of cannabis does not make it federally legal, it does send yet another significant signal affirming cannabis’ normalization and status, not only as a legitimate industry, but also, one that is viewed as such by the highest levels of the federal government.

Given this significant development, should Nevada’s gaming industry take this opportunity to reconsider its prohibitionist stance on engaging with the legal cannabis industry? Is this a chance to lead and mold a new market segment that is clearly in demand and sought by the newest generation of tourists and travelers?

Nevada gaming set its policy in 2018 shortly after the state voted to legalize cannabis for adult use, basing its decision on very real concerns both at a state and federal level. A signifi-

GUEST COLUMN

Should gaming take advantage of the latest developments in cannabis?

cant portion of that policy was based on the realities of the legal cannabis markets at the time, which operated in the shadow of unclear federal guidance and enforcement. The hesitancy was justified, particularly in light of the Nevada gaming industry’s storied past.

However, many of those concerns have been mitigated, not only by the natural evolution of the industry but also because of successful regulation of cannabis markets by individual states, just like we have seen in Nevada.

The concerns have all but faded, just as society’s acceptance and interest in cannabis continues to grow. According to a recent Gallup poll, the percentage of U.S. adults who consume marijuana has more than doubled in the previous decade, increasing from 7% in 2013 to 17% by 2023. During the same time period, the percentage of those who said they had tried it at least once increased from 38% to 50%.

The majority of cannabis users within that group are between the ages of 18 and 34, with more than 25% reporting frequent usage.

In Las Vegas, a city that attracts

visitors from across the world and provides the kind of tailored experiences that strive to keep generations of travelers coming back, major resorts and casinos do not offer cannabis products or experiences and strictly prohibit their possession and use on property.

But consider this: according to a recent Forbes article, a 2020 nationwide poll by market research firm MMGY Travel Intelligence revealed that nearly 18% of American leisure travelers are interested in cannabis-related vacation activities. If we restrict the poll sample to adults over 21 who consume cannabis and have an annual family income of $50,000 or more, the figure increases to 62%.

Concurrently, gaming establishments across the world are grappling with how to attract the new generation of gamblers, who are much more interested in internet gaming and online sports betting, back to the casino floor. When looking at the demographics of online gambling, it’s the same 18 to 34-year-old age group that makes up the largest segment, with over 30% owning an online sports betting account.

Embracing cannabis does not mean unleashing clouds of marijuana smoke throughout the hotel and casino. Cannabis products outside of traditional joints and smokeable flower have evolved significantly since the start of state legalization. The cannabis-infused beverage category specifically has seen exponential growth recently, as younger generations are ditching alcohol in record numbers and seeking other adult alternatives to enjoy in a social setting.

In fact, recent research by Heineken 0.0 shows that Gen Z alcohol consumption has decreased by 25% in the last four years. Simply embracing low-dose cannabis-infused beverages could be a huge opportunity to meet new consumer demand and recapture any lost revenue from non-alcoholic drinkers.

What we also know, and what is clear just by walking down Las Vegas Boulevard, is that consumers are going to make cannabis a part of their experience either way. The biggest players on the Strip, resorts and casinos where consumption is already taking place, are the ones missing out on capturing this revenue.

You don’t need to be a cannabis advocate to see the opportunities and obvious interplay between these two markets. Nevada gaming establishments would be smart to begin revisiting their concerns, investing in the proper infrastructure, and positioning themselves to be leaders in this burgeoning marketplace.
