What is your defi nition of “beauty”? Is it a great personality? Looks? Clothes? Voice? All of the above? Whatever your defi nition is, Las Vegas celebrates sexiness in all its forms, and this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is a direct reflection of that.

Strip variety show combines musical fun and sexy antics

Brian Newman: After Dark inside NoMad Library is just a total vibe. The late-night show is the perfect incarnation of what entertainment was during the Rat Pack era of Las Vegas.

First off, the venue, NoMad Library, is one of the slickest spaces on the Strip—dimly lit and full of velvety seating, candlelight, dark woods and an air of sophistication. There’s simply nothing else like it.

The show, a live music romp featuring a cornucopia of talents, provides an evening of unforgettable, sexy entertainment.

It’s all headed up by Newman, who has tons of talent—he’s the band leader for Lady Gaga and her show, Jazz & Piano, which takes the stage at Dolby Live at Park MGM this week (see p. 20), just a short walk through the casino from NoMad Library. Gaga and Newman are longtime friends, meeting years ago in New York City’s Lower East Side, where Gaga was a go-go dancer at a bar he tended. So guests of his show might be in for a pleasant surprise, as Gaga has been known to take the stage alongside Newman during his shows.

The close-knit connection continues with Newman’s wife, famed burlesque dancer Angie Pontani, also in the cast of After Dark. As Newman plays the trumpet, backed by a live band that plays a mix of pop hits rearranged into jazzy sounds, Pontani dazzles, shimmying and shaking across the stage. They’re joined by other talents, including a variety of singers, dancers and special guests. The library is open at this Las Vegas Strip extravaganza inspired by the reality TV show

If you haven’t been to a drag show before, what are you waiting for? Nothing beats the high-energy atmosphere and variety of talent that comes with the art form. And with this being Pride Month, there’s no better time to snag tickets to one of the hottest shows in town: RuPaul’s Drag Race Live!

You can feel the buzz of excitement the moment you step foot in the showroom as attendees mill about, chatting about which queens from the production’s namesake TV show they hope to see. Clips from fan-favorite episodes and RuPaul hit music videos play on screens on either side of the main stage, reassuring you that what you’re about to see is going to be a superfan experience like no other. Then when the lights fi nally drop and the spectacle begins, the whole room comes alive.

The cast changes from time to time, so you never know which Ru Girls you’ll see, but you’re guaranteed an absolutely phenomenal show nonetheless. You’re likely to see Scottish drag icon Lawrence Chaney, pictured, take the stage with her quick wit and charming accent. Winner of the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, Chaney pops between hilariously hosting and taking her turn to compete in the ultimate lip-sync smackdown for the crown. But trust me on this, no matter what this queen is doing, you won’t be able to take your eyes o her, and she may very well end up being your favorite in the show.

Chaney is not the only international queen to take part in this over-the-top display; season 12 contestant and host of Drag Race France, Nicky Doll, and Drag Race Thailand judge and winner of the fi rst season of RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK vs. the World Pangina Heals, have both brought their talent to this stage.

Not to mention you can count on some legendary queens like season seven’s “Dancing Diva of Texas” Kennedy Davenport, who has been a mainstay, serving undeniable ability and pageant elegance. How much do we love Tournament of Kings, the long-running, family-friendly medieval production? Let us count the numbers over its 30-plus years:

• 15 million-plus: Number of Cornish game hens served to guests over the show’s 30-plus-year history. (All foods at this production are meant to be eaten with your hands.)

• 75,000: Cubic feet of wood shavings used each year inside the venue’s horse stables, ensuring each equine is as comfortable as possible. (All the horses live on-property in 19 stalls.)

• 150: Weight in tons of hay consumed by the show’s horses each year.

• 50: Weight in tons of soil added to the arena every year.

• 47: Number of people who are responsible for bringing each and every performance to vivid life (20 crew including audio, pyrotechnic, lighting, wardrobe and stage technicians, and 27 cast members including King Arthur, Merlin, riders, fighters and dancers).

• 20: Battle props used during each performance (13 swords, four short swords, two ball and chains, and one axe).

What makes this show so singular among the offerings on the Strip is its audience participation element. Before the show even starts, you’ll be seated in one of the different “country” sections (including Austria, France, Hungary, Ireland, Sweden, Spain and Romania), which automatically gives you a feeling of inclusion. For a truly memorable meal, there’s no end to the Father’s Day offerings in Las Vegas

If you want to treat your pops while you’re in Vegas, you’ve got plenty of choices. Here are a few where you can honor the parental unit in style.

• In Aria, Proper Eats Food Hall offers a free beer on June 16 for all dads (with a purchase from one of the food venues like Parm Famous Italian, Wexler’s Deli and Lola’s Burgers) at Proper Bar.

• The Capital Grille in FSLV—Fashion Show Las Vegas serves up a 22-ounce bone-in prime rib, pictured, exclusively for Father’s Day. If Dad’s a wine lover, the restaurant is pulling out Caymus 50th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon, available by the glass.

• That Caymus 50th Anniversary can also be enjoyed at Smith & Wollensky at the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian, either by the bottle or the glass.

• A family-style special meal at Yardbird Southern Table & Bar at The Venetian presents a Father’s Day Supper with fried chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, St. Louis ribs and sausage, plus sides like Mama’s Mash, Brussels sprouts mac and cheese and street corn. You even get dessert. Key lime pie and fried Oreos sound pretty good, don’t they?

• At Top of the World at The STRAT, a specialty menu features a dry-rubbed, 32-ounce porterhouse, sure to satisfy even the heartiest of appetites. And the Money in the Bank cocktail puts together 18-year Scotch, yuzu marmalade and Angostura bitters. Plus, Dad can watch the SkyJump Las Vegas thrill seekers falling past. (Don’t worry; they’re in harnesses and are completely safe.)

• Another really special menu is offered at Carversteak at Resorts World Las Vegas, where dads will revel in choices like prime beef tartare and Maine lobster roll bites, a 24-ounce bone-in ribeye, filet Oscar and Bailey’s petit gateau. The restaurant also offers High West Distillery’s limited-release A Midwinter’s Night’s Dram.

• Cabo Wabo Cantina at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood offers an exclusive cocktail, only available on Father’s Day: The Paparita. Cuervo Tradicional tequila is the spirit used, and the whole concoction is topped off with an upside-down bottle of Dos Equis Mexican lager. –Nina King

Anything Goes

Pop icon brings the Great American Songbook back to the Strip in hit residency

Lady Gaga’s career has been characterized by blossoming and becoming, from her embryonic electro-pop and neo-burlesque phases to acting roles and her current course as the queen of cabaret singing. Her evolution led to the upper echelon of Las Vegas resident headliners when she became the first performer to launch two residencies at Park MGM beginning in 2018, but lately her heart seems to be more aligned with her tribute to the Great American Songbook, Lady Gaga: Jazz & Piano

A lot of that no doubt has to do with the late Tony Bennett, with whom Gaga recorded two albums, and who once joined Gaga onstage to sing several songs from their 2014 duets album, Cheek to Cheek. His spirit lives on in the show, where the selection of standards from the Great American Songbook are delivered with an energy that feels limitless.

Of course, this being an intimate show, Gaga will undoubtedly change the lineup from night to night. So while you will undoubtedly hear classics like “Luck Be a Lady Tonight” and “Anything Goes,” you might also hear a solo-piano rendition of “Poker Face.”

Gaga, who has a Haus of Gaga store at host property Park MGM, seems now very much a part of Las Vegas—and has only just begun. –Las Vegas Magazine Staff

Makeup and skincare boutique opens first Vegas location

If you’re a fan of Glossier ’s unique collection of self-care items from skincare to makeup, wait until you see the new boutique in Las Vegas, a sleek shop filled with Glossier merchandise of all kinds.

The interior of the shop itself will encourage you to explore. It’s actually lit through the walls, which are constructed of polycarbonate. That results in diffuse light and creates a

unique environment in which to stop and check everything out. Overhead is another unique circular lighting element with multiple bulbs, looking rather futuristic. Product testing tables throughout are a mint green, with cobalt and silver benches and pink and mauve counters and walls.

You’ll also find bright red buttons that activate hidden lighting animations in the store. Another hidden

Pub can keep you busy all year round with its impressive beer program

Beer, beer, beer—it’s all here! Pub 365 at Tuscany Suites & Casino is a mecca for any beer lover. While in Las Vegas, if you’re looking for a place that will satisfy the novice or expert beer drinker, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better experience.

Just as the name says, Pub 365 has a beer for every day of the year, with 61 of them on draft that are constantly rotated and updated. “We bring in new beers, on average, about five to 10 per week,” says Jose Martinez, lead bartender for Pub 365. “We also have our unicorn menu.”

The unicorn menu features “seasonal, hard-to-find in this region, specialty, rare beers,” Martinez says. Names like Bicycle Day from Great Notion Brewing, Bourbon County Brand Fourteen Stout from Goose Island Beer Co., 120 Minute IPA 2022 from Dogfish Head Craft Brewing and Dead ‘N’ Dead from Rogue Ales, all make an appearance, and the list goes on and on. Pub 365 also caters to the local beer scene, with

nearly 30 taps dedicated to selections from breweries like Able Baker Brewing, Bad Beat Brewing, Tenaya Creek Brewery and Beer Zombies Brewing.

With the overwhelming selection of beers, we asked Martinez for some suggestions: “The Duck Hunter

Another twist on a classic is the Mezcal Rita with mezcal, triple sec, Grand Marnier, lime juice, agave and a sugar rim. “The mezcal gives the cocktail a smokier flavor than tequila,” he says. The sugar rim is a tasty touch compared to the classic salt rim on a margarita.

Director and curator helps to preserve Las Vegas history

Like a bartender who keep drinks flowing and a manager who keeps a restaurant running smoothly, Joseph Kent, the deputy director and curator of Atomic Museum, keeps history living. Atomic Museum “is the one-stop shop to learn about everything nuclear-related, especially with Las Vegas and Nevada’s role in that testing,” Kent says.

Kent, who has had a love for museums and history since he was young, discovered the Atomic Museum when he

was in grad school (for public history) and went to a conference in Canada, where one of the museum’s former directors was lecturing. “I had no idea that Nevada had any relationship to nuclear testing, let alone this expansive. It really intrigued me and I wanted to learn more.”

Kent interned at Atomic Museum in 2013 and was hired that year as the director of education. He took a few years away but returned in 2019 and recently accepted his current position. As deputy

Few things make the heart more whole than a family-style Italian meal within the walls of an old-school eatery. Seriously, how could you resist? When you combine the aromas of freshly cooked breads and pastas, the ambience provided by warm light and soft music, and the hospitality from waitstaff that makes you feel like family, it's singularly one of the best dining experiences

you can have. So have it, at Carmine’s Las Vegas.

It would be a crime to sit down at this New York City favorite and just order an entrée, so throw your diet out the window, because you’ll need to have a multicourse experience here.

Of course, you’ll start your dining experience with a fresh basket of bread on the table, but take that starter up

a notch when you order the Spiedini Alla Romana, an absolutely delightful loaf of thick-sliced bread stuffed with fresh mozzarella and soaked in a rich combination of butter, lemon, white wine, capers and anchovies. If you’re more into a bit of a crunch, order the fried zucchini, which are cut shoestring style to optimize crispiness. While you dig into apps, you’ve got to order a cocktail … or two, or three. Sip on the scrumptious Ginger Peartini, a concoction of Grey Goose Pear vodka, Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur and lemon juice, or the Sardinian Lemon Drop, made with Grey Goose, lemon juice, Chambord and Argiolas amaro. If you prefer a bit of bite, have the Carmine’s Negroni with Broker's gin, Carpano Antica vermouth and Campari.

You’ll have a hard time choosing just one entreé here as the menu is gigantic; quite literally everything on

it will make your mouth water. For proteins, try the porterhouse Contadina or the chicken Contadina, both featuring their starring meats over a bed of roasted bell peppers, potatoes and sweet Italian sausage. Veggie lovers have got

to order the eggplant Parmigiana, a traditional take made simply with fried eggplant, marinara sauce and cheese that needs to be on your must-try list. It’s flavorful, satisfying and oozes with cheese and sauce without being soggy. (It’s incredible, and this is coming from a lifelong eggplant hater.)

Expectedly, you’ll find pastas galore here. Penne, rigatoni, spaghetti, lasagna—you name it, they serve it, probably in multiple ways, too. Meatballs, pork braciola and Italian sausage make the savory ragu, while veggies are the main event of the giardiniera, made with broccoli, spinach, plum tomatoes, mushrooms and fresh herbs. Seafood standouts include calamari, shrimp and clam sauce, all served either red or white, or pasta with mixed seafood like lobster, shrimp, clams and mussels. You didn’t forget about dessert, did you? Here you’ll find Italian classics like tiramisu and cannolis, but you’ll also find the absolutely over-the-top Titanic, a mountain of ice cream served over a chocolate torte and topped with fruits, nuts, fudge and whipped cream. And, of course, Carmine’s has a dessert cocktail menu. Try the Café Corretto, made with Borghetti espresso liqueur. It’s like having a cup of coffee with dessert, but better!

Resorts World Las Vegas celebrates another year of music, food and tailored stays

The day that the developers of Resorts World Las Vegas conceived of a three-hotel concept marked the beginning of drastic change on the north end

of the Strip. Rather than present all hotel rooms under one roof, Resorts World made a clear demarcation between guest experiences with a choice of

staying at Las Vegas Hilton, Conrad Las Vegas or Crockfords Las Vegas when it opened in 2021. By design or accident, Resorts World also created an appetite in video-blogging adventurers to stay in all three towers, usually during one visit. It’s just one fascinating facet of a destination that continues to surprise, and this month the property celebrates three years of changing the game.

Second-generation rapper sizzles on her latest tour

A lot of rappers believe they were born to freestyle, but Megan Thee Stallion is truly genetically gifted. Her late mother was recognized for lyrical skills in Houston’s ’90s hip-hop scene, and, by high school, the future star born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete was exhibiting preternatural skills at improvisation, onomatopoeia and fast flow. At 29, she dominates the rap game, standing taller than any of her peers—literally and figuratively.

Megan Thee Stallion has also taken the baton from Taylor Swift for hottest concert ticket and runs with it throughout the summer, bringing the Hot Girl Summer Tour to San Francisco, Glasgow, Manchester and Paris after Las Vegas. Pretty impressive for a first headliner tour, but Megan Thee Stallion has taken her success in stride with every skyrocketing step of the way. There’s never been a fake-it-until-you-make-it phase of her career.

her own mother’s care. Little Megan came into being under the influence of both of their strong personalities. She grew up tall and proudly voluptuous, taking on the sobriquet “Stallion”—Texas slang for women with lower limbs shaped similarly to her own.

Sharpening her skills battling other rappers in a cappella cyphering square-offs set the stage for her to post freestyling videos beginning in 2013 while attending Prairie View A&M University. Megan Thee Stallion tapped into the social media zeitgeist while studying for her bachelor of science in health administration and became a viral sensation.

By 2016 she released her first single, “Like a Stallion,” and began posting to SoundCloud. Two years later she signed with an independent label.

Her relationship with 1501 Certified Entertainment is now part of hip-hop lore, with the rapper’s early inexperience in business causing her to not fully comprehend

what she signed up for. Megan Thee Stallion prevailed in the subsequent lawsuit that won her independence, but maintained her relationship with producer LilJuMadeDaBeat.

It’s been a fruitful collaboration, resulting in hits such as “Body,” concert highlights “Megan’s Piano” and “Captain Hook,” and her latest No. 1 single, “Hiss.” It’s the leadoff track from her new album set to be released while she’s on tour, and she’s been opening shows with it.

Her current concerts cover some 30 songs in her catalog including “Hot Girl,” “Girls in the Hood” and “Southside Forever Freestyle.” She includes her collaborations with Dua Lipa (“BOA”), Beyonce (“Savage”) and, of course, Cardi B (“WAP”). Megan Thee Stallion’s capacity for lyrical memory storage seems endless, and the precision with which she delivers torrents of taunts, titillation and talking points is next-level.

It seems like she’s drawing from an endless well while cultivating her production skills as well as her status as a style icon. Her win as Best New Artist at the 2021 Grammys was just the beginning of her reign as rap’s most mischievous monarch who could wind up ruling for a long time.

Vegas features iconic confections straight from the mind of the chef

Chef Dominique Ansel doesn’t dream about pastry, but that’s because he requires little sleep. The French-born master of flaky cakes and creamy confections thinks about his work constantly. It’s more productive preoccupation than obsession, a dedication to craft that is all-consuming and part of Ansel’s destiny. How could he not optimize the ingredients of ability, vision and opportunity presented to him by the machinations of fate?

Ansel is the creator of the Cronut, the hybrid of croissant and donut debuted in New York City. One bite at his Caesars Palace shop, Dominique Ansel Las Vegas, validates all heraldry, its creamy filling of tiramisu and espresso ganaches generating palate pleasure on a scale that makes previous dessert experiences also-rans at best.

Dominique Ansel Bakery, where the Cronut was conceived, opened 12 years ago this year. The iconic invention came to be after Ansel’s girlfriend, now his wife and business partner, asked him to create a donut for Mother’s Day.

“I’m French. I had no recipe for donuts,” says Ansel, who only had four employees at the time. “She insisted enough that I ended up doing something. Or course I grew up eating croissants. I loved the idea of having the layer of croissant in a donut shape, and I worked on something that didn’t work well in the beginning, but I knew was a good idea.”

A lot of New Yorkers thought it was a good idea, too. It took time and many revisions for Ansel to be satisfied, but the Cronut went viral quickly after its debut. Customers came in droves.

“We made 35 the first day, next day we made 45,” recalls Ansel. By the third day, some 150 people lined up before the bakery opened. “It was stressful. Worrisome. People were not happy. People were complaining, but it’s New York.”

There are more than enough Cronuts to make customers happy at Dominique Ansel Las Vegas. The dining area and displays are immaculate, save for the flakes of pastry that inevitably fall on the white tables and the floor. Ansel’s popular DKA, a Breton butter cake with

caramelized crispy crust, is easy to find alongside chocolate tacos and pie slices in seasonal flavors of Extra-Silky Pumpkin and Bourbon Pecan.

The gooey, ganache-filled Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich and Banana Split are more multilayer experiences than dessert, while Cookie Shots capable of holding Bailey’s Irish Cream are served with precision by a robot at the entrance of the shop.

Precision guides Ansel’s hand and gives him the discipline to accomplish, but it’s the reaction to his results that inspire him. “Food has the power to bring you back to a moment in time. It connects you with emotions, with people,” he says, recalling a frozen s’mores item, fashioned for a summer menu, that was torched in front of customers before being served. “You hand it to them, and they bite into it and see marshmallow, and they smile. They’re like kids again.”
