Rewriting the Rules

In the 22 years I’ve lived in Las Vegas, the evolution of the city’s entertainment scene has truly been something to witness. From Celine Dion’s game-changing A New Day... residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace and The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil at The Mirage to the immersive movie experience Postcard From Earth at Sphere (not to mention the visuals Sphere is capable of during residencies from bands like U2 and Phish), Las Vegas proves over and over again that there actually is something new under the sun.

And this week, Luxor presents something truly next-level: Particle Ink. This almost indescribable show combines so many aspects of entertainment—dance, special e ects, light, shadow and interactive environments, just to name a few. It’s something you don’t want to miss as part of your Las Vegas experience this week (“Graphic Novelty,” p. 32).

This is also a week of some notable anniversaries. The Venetian turns 25 (“Center of Attention,” p. 34), while “X” Burlesque at Flamingo celebrates its 22nd anniversary (“Still Scintillating,” p. 21).

Who’s in town for Memorial Day Weekend? If that’s you, you’ll want to check out some of the best ways to celebrate the occasion up and down the Strip (“Keep the Party Going!” p. 24).

Who’s hungry? We’ve got plenty of great dining options lined up in this week’s issue, from delicious tapas at Bar Zazu at Resorts World Las Vegas (“Style and Substance,” p. 17 ) to all the styles of barbecue you can dig into at Virgil’s Real Barbecue at The Linq Promenade (“All ’Cued Up,” p. 28).

As Las Vegas keeps rewriting all the rules, we’re so glad you’re here to enjoy our ever-changing landscape. Have a game-changing week!

Your Whole Family Will Howl

Master magician combines music, down-home humor and audience participation

Usually when you see the tag “family-friendly entertainment,” it means the show will appeal to kids, but not necessarily adults. Nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to The Mac King Comedy Magic Show, a long-running romp that will have everyone in the audience laughing. It’s infectiously fun, and we can almost guarantee your kids will be lining up at the end to either buy their own magic set or meet the man himself (King always meets with his fans after every show).

King himself is very unassuming—he arrives onstage in a checkered suit that seems just a bit too big for him. But, as you’ll soon discover, there are plenty of jokes and visual gags that involve this suit (food and animals figure prominently). It’s as much a part of the show as King himself, and impossible to forget.

King’s “aw, shucks” presentation is meant to disarm you, as the illusions he performs will have your jaw on the floor, using props ranging from a rope to a fishing pole to a camping tent. He’s not

flashy or boastful; the feats he achieves feel very matter-of-fact. There’s a very good chance you’ll get back to your hotel room and think, “Wait a minute—how did he DO all that?”

Audience participation is a big part of the show as well. If you’re called up onstage and can keep a straight face in the onslaught of King’s hilarious routines, more power to you! (We certainly couldn’t.) –Ken Miller

Beyond Burlesque

Check out this icon’s over-the-top tease

It’s a wonderful world of glitz, glamour and vintage Vegas inside the showroom at Horseshoe Las Vegas, where burlesque queen Dita Von Teese delivers Dita Las Vegas: A Jubilant Revue

She reawakens the spirit of former showgirl spectacular Jubilee!, a show which ran in the same theater for decades when the property was Bally’s, and puts her own spin on the art form that helped define this city’s entertainment landscape. The raven-haired beauty even wears original Jubilee! costuming created by iconic designer Bob Mackie, including those towering, feather-filled headdresses.

Von Teese enters from the ceiling to start the show and then slowly goes back up and disappears before reappearing again along with the rest of the dolled-up cast as they descend a grand staircase to a jazzedup version of Elvis’ “Viva Las Vegas.” The show’s sets are nothing short of dazzling, taking audiences on a journey through re-creations of the bottom of the ocean, a tropical forest, a French-inspired boudoir, a ballroom, a three-ring circus and more. All the while the stage is filled with athletic male dancers and buxom burlesque queens in all shapes and sizes.

Von Teese joins various vignettes, giving fans a chance to catch the

sweet and sultry dance moves that made her famous, whether she’s wearing tight leather and latex, dressed in pasties and a glittery thong as she swirls around in a champagne glass, or donning a cowboy hat and chaps while riding a pink velvet mechanical bull.

Music here is familiar, as songs made famous by Madonna, Prince, George Michael, Elvis and more are turned into fun, old-school swing and jazz sounds. High-tech visuals make their way into Dita Las Vegas, too. One perfect example is a number where Von Teese is stretched out on a sofa displaying her impressive curves while her outfit keeps changing to the beats of the music—thanks to some clever lighting techniques.

Other stand-out numbers include a cheeky tribute to longtime Vegas entertainer Liberace and some boisterous and fun stage time with famous burlesque performer Dirty Martini.

If you ever wondered what this city’s classic entertainment looked and felt like, Dita Las Vegas: A Jubilant Revue is a perfect way to get that perspective while being utterly fascinated with the beauty and talent that reigns on the stage. –Kiko Miyasato

Restaurant

features a globally inspired menu and great ambience

The design and ambience inside Bar Zazu is simply stunning. Digital artwork, muted neon colors, low lighting, velvet booths, ornate bar area—it all adds an air of whimsy, sophistication and sexiness to the space.

Each of the tapas here is like a little work of art. This is a great restaurant to try and share with your tablemates, so order multiple dishes. Don’t miss the charred Spanish octopus served with chorizo; arancini with mascarpone, truffle and short rib; made-fresh-daily ceviche with a bite from the Fresno chilis; and

earthy roasted beets with a beet vinaigrette. Cheese and salami boards and a variety of pizzas help round out the opening meal so guests can get ready for more hefty main dishes like Chilean sea bass and the seafood paella. The burger here has been popular since day one, topped with a melty Gorgonzola mascarpone, and the chicken confit is juicy with a hint of lemon. If you’re on a date, try the roasted bone marrow for two, also one of Bar Zazu’s most popular dishes, served with trumpet mushrooms and pickled mustard brioche to help scoop up the goodness.

End the meal with desserts like the mango popsicle or pistachio mousse. And don’t miss out on Bar Zazu’s specialty cocktail program. Floral, globally inspired recipes feature an array of spirits from tequila and rye whiskey to vodka, gin and cognac. Each cocktail mixes in fresh fruits and made-in-house syrups. Tawny ports, sherry, after-dinner liqueurs, rosé and beers from around the world complete the menu. –Kiko Miyasato

X-ceptional Entertainment

Have an x-perience you won’t forget with this pop sensation at The Venetian

How could you not love at least one thing Christina Aguilera has put out? She’s been on screens since her childhood role on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, rose to superstardom after the release of her self-titled debut album and hasn’t slowed down since. You’ve had the chance to love her on the big screen with her starring role in the 2010 film Burlesque and on the small screen with her weekly appearances as a coach on The Voice.

So it’s safe to say that Xtina can be regarded as no less than pop-culture royalty. And as the benevolent queen she is, Aguilera once again gifts her fans with an intimate residency at Voltaire, which picks up this week with shows on May 31 and June 1.

This is not Aguilera’s first dip into the Vegas residency pond; she launched The Xperience at Planet Hollywood’s then Zappos Theater (now Bakkt Theater) in May 2019. But with her previous venue having a 7,000-person capacity, this show, in a 1,000-seat setting, offers an entirely new experience. You’ll hear many of the pop icon’s hits like “Dirrty” and “Genie in a Bottle,” as well as some of her well-known ballads like “Beautiful” and even a sultry cover of Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me.”

Almost as stunning as Aguilera’s vocals and personality, the wardrobe for this show is chic, dynamic and fashionable. From sexy body suits to flowing gowns and capes, you’ll be delighted by each quick change. And it’s a perfect venue to display them in, as Voltaire’s main stage features a long central runway surrounded by swiveling seats, ensuring audience members won’t strain necks or miss a second of the performance. That intimate setting, coupled with caviar service and handcrafted cocktails, means a ticket to this show guarantees a luxurious experience with your favorite songstress. –Em Jurbala

A Night of Possibilities

Downtown bar offers great cocktails, people watching and more

Troy Liquor Bar, simply put, is fun nightlife! Why? Let’s start with the nightly bottle special (the club is open Thursday through Saturday). For just $299 you get a bottle of Tito’s Handmade vodka and a bottle of Moët & Chandon. In the world of nightlife, two bottles of alcohol for a few hundred bucks is an amazing deal!

Next, the views. Troy Liquor Bar has awesome sightlines of the famed Fremont Street Experience from its large, second-floor balcony where the people

watching never gets dull. Also on tap for the night of fun are live music sets from beloved local DJs and a spacious dancefloor with cool lighting technology. This is a nightclub where people love to dance, so if that’s you then you know where you need to be.

The people, that’s a bonus, too. Patrons that go to Troy Liquor Bar are looking for a good time with good vibes, and that’s just what you get here. There are no pretentious people, just a great mix

of local and tourists—all looking to have a night of fun.

Please note that the nightclub does have a strict dress code—neat and presentable attire is required with big no-nos like tank tops, overly baggy pants, athletic wear and work boots. But hey, it’s a night out in Las Vegas … it’s the perfect excuse to dress up while you’re getting down! –Kiko Miyasato

Still Scintillating

Adults-only show celebrates 22 years of entertainment

Burlesque as an art form is one of the oldest in America, and “X” Burlesque is one of the longest-running Strip productions around. In fact, the venerable show, which features dance styles ranging from traditional burlesque style to hip-hop and modern, is celebrating its 22nd anniversary this year. But rest on its laurels? Never! If anything, the show feels like it’s just getting started.

Ever changing and revamping its lineup, the show, which features six dancers a night, has recently added a balloon act, scored to The Fifth Dimension’s “Up, Up and Away,” in which a performer wears a costume adorned with inflated balloons, then uses an ostrich feather to strategically pop them, revealing more and more skin as she goes. There’s also a new disco section with projection mapping, scored to music like “Stayin’ Alive,” “Disco Inferno” and “You Should Be Dancing.” In all, “X” Burlesque has added eight new numbers and several new costumes.

But it seems certain that some features of “X” Burlesque will never change, including The “Mile High Club” segment, in which an audience member is brought on board for some, uh, private moments with one of the dancers, all to the tune of Lenny Kravitz’s “Fly Away,” and the mid-way comedy segment, currently featuring a rotation of Nancy Ryan and James Bean. –Ken Miller

Bartender is the whole package

Kenny Hwong is the epitome of a great bartender. He’s friendly and funny. He cares about the guest. And he’s got the skills. He’s proved it by advancing to the top 30 in a global bartending competition—the 2024 United States Bartenders Guild Presents World Class sponsored by Diageo, taking place June 1 in Denver. If he wins, he’ll go on to the finals in Shanghai and represent the U.S.

You can find Hwong bartending at Legacy Club at Circa Resort & Casino.

He was part of the opening team when the rooftop lounge opened in 2020. In 2017, he was inspired to craft cocktails after paying a visit to the NoMad Bar at NoMad Las Vegas. “I went to that bar to check it out,” says the Vegas native. “I was in shock that there was this style of bartending—craft cocktails. The way they bartended, the technique. I fell in love with it—I wanted to be that.”

He sharpened his skills, “like a Japanese knife,” he says, and he landed at

You can choose the spice by adding one to five dashes of habanero tincture to a 72-hour clarified coconut milk punch that is served with a coconut cream pastry to help cool your tongue! –KM

Legacy Club—one of the best cocktail bars in the city, and home to other USBG competition-winning bartenders.

“To be a good bartender besides good drink-making is it’s all about the people,” he says. “You have to know how to read people and show them a good time. We’re here to make sure that wherever they are from, they feel like they’re home. To help them experience a good time and have a good cocktail, too. That’s what you’ll have at Legacy.” –Kiko Miyasato

Close out National Barbecue Month with Virgil’s Real Barbecue

Did you know you’re in the midst of National Barbecue Month? That’s right, May is the month of smoked meats, dry rubs and delicious sauces, which means it’s the perfect time to drop into Virgil’s Real Barbecue at The Linq Promenade.

With weather this good it makes sense to enjoy your meal in patio seating if it’s available—especially if you’re an avid people watcher—but the ambience that awaits inside the restaurant transports you right to the South with red brick, warm overhead lighting and picnic vibes.

Start your meal with an order of the smoked BBQ chicken wings, smothered in Virgil’s über-delicious hot sauce and served with blue cheese dressing. For a tangy twist, ask for your wings to be dressed in the Carolina Gold sauce, a mustard-based barbecue condiment that has just the

right kind of bite without overwhelming the rich, smokey flavor of the wing.

If you crave a bit of a crunch, try the crispy hush puppies, served with a bourbon maple syrup butter, or the fried sweet pickles and the accompanying remoulade dipping sauce— they’re both irresistible dishes.

To get the full Virgil’s experience, you’ll need to order one of the Pitmaster Platters, featuring meats like Memphis pork spare ribs that simply fall o the bone, succulent Carolina pulled pork, sliced Texas beef brisket and barbecued quarter chicken. The Pig Out! features a bit of everything. If a platter seems like a bit much, consider one of Virgil’s plates featuring proteins like crispy Kansas

City fried chicken and catfish filet, which can be ordered flame grilled or crispy. Steak options abound in this part of the menu with a 20-ounce T-bone steak, a 14-ounce bone-in ribeye and the Georgia chicken fried steak, a ribeye coated in a mixture of corn flakes, potato chips and Saltine crackers topped with a heavy helping of country gravy.

Sandwich enthusiasts, worry not; you’ll also find plenty to love here.

Juicy and savory, the Texas beef brisket melt is piled high with Virgil’s slow-smoked, dry-rubbed brisket, oozy cheddar cheese and sweet caramelized onions. More of that

28 | 5.26.24 Las Vegas Magazine

tasty Texas flavor can be found in the Virgil’s BBQ Burger that not only has an Angus beef patty, but more of that smoked brisket and onion rings. Vegetarians can also enjoy some handheld happiness with the black bean burger, topped with pico de gallo, avocado and chipotle sauce.

Skipping sides would be a touch sacrilegious, with options like ooey gooey, breadcrumb-crusted mac and cheese, cheddar Parmesan grits, hickory pit baked beans, collard greens with smoked bacon and so much more. Wash it all down with a refreshing Blueberry Pear Crush, made from Grey Goose pear vodka, blueberries and lime juice, or a Kentucky Mule with Wild Turkey bourbon, ginger, orange bitters and lime juice. You can even share a gallon-sized party jar of signature concoctions like the Kicked Up Lemonade, made extra fun by Skyy citrus vodka and fresh fruits. Make sure you leave room for dessert, because you won’t be able to resist treats like banana pudding with Nilla Wafers and fresh whipped cream. Pie choices include peanut butter, apple and key lime.

You’ll find it though, and the 7 p.m. start time is loose enough to allow stragglers to explore the entirety of this strange new world that boldly goes where no immersive entertainment experience has gone before.

More than a few excited attendees in 2022 stumbled upon Particle Ink ’s predecessor, Speed of Dark, which made its debut in Las Vegas’ Arts District. The new Strip iteration, which features the original cast and crew of Speed of Dark, is all about expression with light and darkness, presented by a half-dozen or so cast members who interpret what is tantamount to a graphic novel come to life via live illuminatory art, projected text, dance, combat and puppetry.

It is a puppet who greets and entertains guests who enter the main room and surround a performance area in a half-circle before the show starts proper. He’s a crack crowd work comedian in a small dragon-shaped form who confides that there are aspects of the show only visible to “those with hearts to see them. Children mostly, and some adults such as those who have drank ayahuasca!”

Then the crowd is pitched into darkness, save for six glowing, waist-high obelisks in the middle of the room. An impish artist arrives on the scene, working with glowing pigments and interacting with a childlike animated figure that serves as the soul of the surreal narrative as the pages of the living graphic novel turn and plot points move the action forward.

A tall, dark, shrouded, mysterious figure enters the room and initiates the evening’s avant-garde choreog-

raphy. The first of multiple surprises occurs during this segment, which segues into a duel between two principal Particle Ink participants.

Then it’s onto another room, but first there is the hallway-cum-canvas. The layout of Particle Ink is genius, making the most of its square footage so the venue appears more expansive than it actually is. Gracious attendants demonstrate the spray paint cans that allows passersby to tag the walls with luminous graffiti.

A bed with posts draped in a seethrough canopy is the centerpiece

and a lithe, limber dancer is the star of the next segment, which blends animation and live performance even more ingeniously. It’s a sit-down room with benches and pillows strewn about with enough attention to give everyone space and a good sightline, another example of making the most of the space.

hides in the shadows, making its presence known when it’s ready. The puppet returns. Our childlike figure completes tasks that make it self-actualized.

The abstract story continues to unfurl from room to room. More dynamic dancers appear, with furious floor spinning executed during the proceedings. A tentacled creature

Then it’s over, and the feeling that remains is one of satiation as experienced after seeing Star Wars or a concert for the first time.

Except this is cutting edge and novel, graphically so. It’s avant-garde performance art that takes tech-infused Vegas entertainment to the next level.

The Venetian celebrates a quarter century of entertainment, cuisine and so much more

When The Venetian opened its doors 25 years ago, the Strip was a vastly di erent landscape. There was a convenience store on the street corner where The Palazzo now stands, and nearby golden-era casinos Desert Inn and Stardust had yet to be demolished. On the cusp of a $1.5

billion reinvestment and project that may be the largest and most expensive resort renovation in history, The Venetian may already look like it’s had a post-pandemic makeover.

The opening of Sphere created a conduit to the venue from The Venetian, and the corridor between The Palazzo’s main entrance and its casino floor has become a pre-concert staging area. Get stu ed on stu ed pitas before catching Dead & Company Dead Forever in fast-casual fashion at Miznon , a Mediterranean street-food concept envisioned by Israeli chef Eyal Shani and restaurateur Shahar Segal. The socially friendly eatery faces its fi ne dining counterpart HaSalon , where Shani presents an evolving menu in an atmosphere infused with Tel Aviv energy at night.

The Venetian features an “Italia 25” birthday cocktail for the month of May at Bar Luca , Prestige Club Lounge and Sala 118. The latter is

located across from the Grand Colonnade in the elegant Venetian Tower lobby, and was designed to evoke the spirit of Venice’s 118 islands. It o ers a three-chapter cocktail menu (apertivos, Negronis and classic cocktails) created by Venetian’s director of mixology Andrew Pollard.

For craft cocktails served in a lively environment, Juliet Cocktail Room serves up live music performed by a drummer/pianist duo and late-night DJs in a cozy, plush atmosphere. Live bands provide the soundtrack for karaoke at Rockhouse, a multienvironment venue at Grand Canal Shoppes that includes the smoker-friendly Oak Room Whiskey and Tequila Bar.

Flight Club, a sprawling, 16,000-square-foot venue on the second level of Grand Canal Shoppes, is an answered prayer for denizens of dart playing. Handsome leather banquettes, oak dartboards and a lively carousel bar conjure a British pub atmosphere in the desert, with enough space for all comers.

For a yesterday-and-today Venetian experience, make a reservation at Emeril Lagasse’s Delmonico Steakhouse, which began serving

its famed dry-aged T-bone steaks 25 years ago. Then plan on an evening at Voltaire, where producer Michael Gruber hired designer Derek McLane to make a 1,000-seat lavish space for his cabaret-meets-disco Belle de Nuit show. Voltaire guest performers have included Kylie Minogue and Christina Aguilera, with current resident performer Jason Derulo appearing through July.

Some aspects of The Venetian have become iconic, such as the gondola rides, St. Mark’s Square and artist Laura Kimper’s LOVE installation inside the Waterfall Atrium. Tao Asian Bistro continues to thrive after nearly 20 years, and Tao Beach Dayclub set the standard for all pool parties that came in its aftermath.

Yahoo Sportbook ’s 46-million-pixel, 1,770-square-foot LED video wall can feature up to 40 events, and there’s no substitute for Canyon Ranch Spa’s Aquavana thermal suite. Top-to-bottom room renovations are the next part of the renewal plan, an ongoing e ort that makes The Venetian worthy of revisiting.

Explore collectibles and cocktails at The Cabinet of Curiosities bar and lounge

find the Cabinet of Curiosities bar and lounge, head down an escalator from the casino floor, where you’ll also find REAL BODIES at Horseshoe Las Vegas and a Las Vegas Monorail station. Tra c is brisk and constant, giving the cocktail lounge decorated with small antiques, bric-abrac and objets d’art a high level of exposure.

It’s a destination, though, with most visitors having

heard about the Cabinet’s inner sanctum and not-sosecret speakeasy, The Lock. Anyone 21-plus can walk into the Cabinet beginning at noon daily and get signature craft cocktails, top-shelf tequila or o -menu improvisations. Revealing a predilection for bourbon may inspire mixologist Gabby (we’re on a first-name basis here) to concoct an Old-Fashioned variation, made with Skrewball peanut butter

whiskey, that tastes like a dessert. Signature drinks include Curious Cosmopolitans, Pink Stone Eggs and Flea Market Martinis, but the most popular menu item is the bourbon-based Festival of Lights homage to flying lantern festivals.

The drink menu is accessible via QR code, as is an online catalog of the curios. Peruse the collection before entering The Lock: Punch a tag number into a smart-

phone and learn a little about the Authentic Animal Teeth Necklaces (No. 1323), Mystical Typewriter (No. 4381), Carved Figural Mask (No. 8181) and Carved Soapstone Cats (No. 1629). It is possible that creative liberties may have been taken with the explanatory captions, or that the author(s) were inspired by Festivals of Lights, or both.

The outer entrance of The Lock (which requires a reservation) looks like a wall safe, with confirmation made through an adjacent, old-fashioned phone. Once giving the password and entering a vestibule, the 2020s gives way to the 1920s, and a puzzle must be solved to get the access code. Remember to pay close attention to details of the door host’s bootlegger stories.

The Lock sends visitors back a century with brick walls, vintage ceiling tile and Charlie Chaplin movies projected onto one side of the room. Lounge chairs and low-volume old-time music

create a perfect ambience for conversation, with a different set of signature drinks on the QR code menus. Even better, a Secret Menu provides the opportunity to fill out personal specifics regarding one’s current mood, flavor preferences, favorite destinations and zodiac sign.

The result may be an indescribably delicious bourbon concoction or whiskey sour infused with banana, on top of which your mixologist drizzles syrup on the three-cherry garnish before dropping it in the glass. Take that drink and look closely at the walls for signs of another passageway, another door to the inner sanctum’s inner sanctum.

That room is furnished with more comfy chairs and walls festooned with illuminated paintings depicting scenes and figures of the Renaissance and Enlightenment eras. A mirrored ceiling creates an infinity effect, and the sound system is Bluetooth-accessible, so guests can play music from phones. Talk about the past meeting the present!

There are other speakeasies in Las Vegas, but there are no other speakeasies with a room like this. The Cabinet of Curiosities and The Lock are escape rooms of a different kind where one can experience an atmosphere truly unlike any other on the Strip.

Adults and kids can swim with the fishes at Silverton Casino Lodge’s Mermaid School

I don’t know if you were like me when I was a kid and jumped in any pool … I would pretend that I was a mermaid and would squeeze my legs and feet

together imagining it was a tail, and I would cut through the waters just like the mythical creature. Does that sound familiar?

Well, pretend no more! Cut through actual waters (in this case, the 117,000-gallon aquarium at Silverton Casino Lodge), don colorful tail and fins, and live out your mermaid fantasy at the property’s popular Mermaid School. There is no experience required for Mermaid School—just a love for mermaids, fish and water and a little

imagination (and strong swimming skills). Classes are o ered for both adults and kids, and each class is led by an instructor and Silverton mermaid. In the waters during each class is a safety diver, too, certified in water rescue. The class is about 90 minutes long and entails (get it?!) 30 minutes of tail and fin fitting, instruction and photo taking, 30 minutes inside the aquarium and a 30-minute behind-the-scenes tour. “It’s everyone’s dream to be a mermaid, and your dream is coming true!” said Sierra Gomez, mermaid and instructor.

• The first 30 minutes: Getting ready. Choose what tail you want to wear (sizes kids 4 all the way up to an adult 3X). The tail fits like a tight skirt going from the ankles to above the stomach. Next, you fit the fins on your feet, which act like the tip of the mermaid tail and help you move through the waters. Photo taking is next, while you’re still dry and your hair and makeup are perfect! Mermaid School provides a backdrop to pose in front of.

• The second 30 minutes: Getting in the water. You’ll be swimming with more than 2,000 animals inside the

tank containing 100 di erent species. “They’ll come over and get close,” said Kristin Janise, Silverton’s aquatic safety manager, mermaid and creator of Mermaid School. “We definitely have a few fish that have personalities and they’ll come check you out, but there are no issues with harassing people.” Guests will get to dive, swim and play out their mermaid fantasies, but there is a platform for

sitting inside the water for those that are a little timid and need to take time adjusting to their surroundings. “If the kids are nervous about the fish, I just tell them to wave to them and to say, ‘Bye-bye fishes,’ and they’ll usually swim away,” Gomez said. “But the animals are so used to people that they don’t really bother you.”

• The last 30 minutes: Getting to see behind the scenes. “People just see the main tank and they think that’s it, and we show them the back area and they realize all it takes to keep this place running,” Janise said. Tour the quarantine area, where new residents are observed before joining the aquarium. See where the food is prepped and where the chemistry equipment to test the waters is stored, check out the seamstress area where the mermaid tails are kept looking good, and get a look at the various tanks with live coral reefs and cool inhabitants like hundreds of jelly fish babies.

A helpful tip: Bring your own swimsuit and camera. The Mermaid School provides everything else, including tail, fins, goggles, towels and the magic of making mermaid dreams come true.
