When you think of Las Vegas, what immediately springs to mind? If I had asked this question back in the town’s early days, odds are your answer would have been “gambling.” But these days, that answer could be literally anything. History in the Making

Entertainer celebrating 65 years in Vegas show business is, himself, a part of the fabric of the city

To this date, one of my proudest moments as editor of Las Vegas Magazine was presenting Wayne Newton with an inaugural Las Vegas Magazine Hall of Fame honor during one of his shows in 2020. Newton could not have been more gracious as my publisher and I took the stage to sing his praises and take photos with the man himself. The show we attended, Up Close and Personal, was at the time held at the intimate (and now defunct) Cleopatra’s Barge at Caesars Palace, but Newton has since taken the show to bigger environs at Flamingo, and he remains as gracious as ever, and more deserving of a Hall of Fame honor than ever—this year marks 65 years he’s been performing in Las Vegas!

Over those six-plus decades, the number of properties Newton has held court at are too numerous to all mention here, many of them now demolished to make way for new properties (which Newton has also performed at!). Along the way, he’s dabbled in movies and television, recorded some enduring standards, established charities, entertained U.S. troops abroad, raised Arabian horses, and generally blazed trails wherever he went.

For each performance of Up Close and Personal, Newton selects a specific moment in his history to focus on. It makes each show unique and rewarding for Vegas history buffs. After all, this is a man who’s been around for most of the city’s key moments, including the recent explosion of professional sports. He’s been involved with both the Golden Knights and Raiders organizations, and announced the Raiders’ third-round pick selection in the 2022 NFL draft held in Las Vegas.

And his friends over the years read like a who’s who of the history of entertainment: Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin, Lucille Ball, George Burns, Jack Benny and Danny Thomas. To say Newton has got something to talk about seems underselling the case considerably.

And as Newton tirelessly heads toward his 70th year of performing, the treasure trove of detail he draws on for Up Close and Personal will only continue to grow. –Ken Miller

When you decide to stop in to see what Gatsby’s is all about, there’s a high likelihood you’ll end up in one of their special events, since there’s always something on the calendar: On Tuesdays you’ll be able to enjoy live acoustic performances; every Thursday through Sunday you can catch bumpin’ beats by various DJs; and themed parties take over this joint fairly frequently, with monthly happenings like the Return of the Gatz party on the first Friday of each month and the Zodiac Days celebration on the first Thursday of each sign’s date range. Explore this ever-evolving attraction

If you haven’t been to Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart in AREA15, you don’t know what you’re missing. And unless you look very closely at all the details of the freaky supermarket, you may still not know what you’re missing.

Omega Mart combines art with attraction to create a slightly creepy scramble behind the scenes at the Dramcorp supermarket, with worlds to be discovered behind doors and desks. Even longtime fans of the attraction recently got more to uncover with the opening of two new rooms, both featuring Vegas artists.

If you were dying to see what lay in the padlocked icebox in Seven Monolith Village, yank open the door now and check out Rhampa, a wild diorama with layers of meaning and materials accompanied by a mutable soundscape. Gail Gilbert, a dancer, sculptor and painter, brought the scene to life.

Farther into Dramcorp headquarters, you’ll spy an office environment from the mind of emerging artist Mila May. In this space, titled Daydream, a detail-filled mural will capture your imagination—sound and light are incorporated as well.

“In these new spaces, two incredibly talented local artists express their authentic artistic voice within our exhibit,” said Omega Mart creative director Kent Caldwell in a news release. “The results are magical works of art that reward curiosity.”

This world has a speakeasy too; Datamosh, where the atmosphere is relaxed and vodka-based Happle Juice is plentiful and delicious. Datamosh is open daily, but Omega Mart also hosts monthly 21-and-over “Night Shift” events with bars throughout the attraction.

Flipping Great!

See plenty of talented performers in the Las Vegas production

You are a pirate and a passenger on the Titanic when you attend WOW—The Vegas Spectacular. You are likely not as good of a dancer, juggler, acrobat, roller skater, plate spinner, crossbow shooter or Wheel of Death walker as the cast members of the largescale, family-friendly production inside the WOW Theater. You can still be part of the show, though, thanks in large part to your guide, Alessandro.

The hapless, bespectacled host sporting a gray blazer interacts with the audience while weaving the various acts together, steering clear when an aerialist spins on a chandelier suspended in the air, but joining in when the pirates gather to sing “You Are a Pirate” and dance energetic jigs.

These pirates are more about juggling than finding buried booty, though. Spinning and revolutions take many forms at WOW—The Las Vegas Spectacular. A singing chef demonstrates how to keep 10 plates spinning simultaneously on a table. Jonathan and Alejandro Guardaodo use their head and feet to great effect for the body flipping of their Icarian act. Edison Parraga Arana and Juan Salas Rebeco jump ropes as they rotate on the Wheel of Death. Through all this, a triptych of high-definition video panels create immersive backdrops.

America’s Got Talent alumni Silvia Silvia may provide the most nail-biting suspense with her crossbow prowess, but she never misses her targets. This menagerie of circus acts melded into a showcase of talent moves fast and gets pulses racing faster. –Matt Kelemen

Get Your Game On

This Strip bar offers plenty of playtime options

Strip hotels are full of bars and lounges, each with their own unique spin and offerings. One of the newest, and easily one of the most enjoyable to date, is The Cove Bar & Arcade at Treasure Island, an all-in-one destination directly across from the Mystère theater that not only features great cocktails and sports viewing, but some of your arcade favorites. There’s no end to the fun to be had at this 7,367-square-foot space. Bring the kids (all children under 14

must be accompanied by an adult) to enjoy simulations of golf, soccer, football, baseball, basketball, hockey, rugby, lacrosse and much more, as well as virtual reality games like King Kong of Skull Island. There’s also air hockey, claw machines, champion shuffleboard, Jet Pong (arcade-style beer pong), foosball and classic arcade games like Pac-Man’s Pixel Bash. Perhaps the biggest draw here is duckpin bowling. If you’ve never tried this alternative to classic bowling, it’s

a very challenging variation, featuring shorter and lighter pins, meaning strikes are more difficult.

Add in 19 high-definition televisions, eight video poker stations and a great beer and cocktail menu and you’ve basically found your new party headquarters. However, fair warning: Once you enter, you may never want to leave. –Ken Miller

A lesson in hospitality

Some people are just born to teach. Meet one such teacher, Bethany Wetmore, the assistant general manager at Atomic Golf. “I was put on this earth to teach in some way; it just so happens to be I landed in hospitality,” says the Oregon native.

While she earned a degree in elementary education and a master’s in leadership and administration (with plans to be a principal), it’s the hospitality industry where Wetmore found her groove. She bartended while in college and contin-

ued working her skills behind the bar when she moved to Las Vegas in 2011. Wetmore’s résumé includes a decade’s worth of bartending at top nightclubs and dayclubs on the Strip. Eventually, she switched to management roles and she’s never looked back. “It feeds all my teaching stuff that I love as well as the hospitality side.”

Galpão Gaucho takes the Brazilian steakhouse experience up a notch

Brazilian steakhouses are awesome. You feel like a Roman emperor as skewer after skewer of flamed-grilled meat is brought to your table and sliced right onto your plate; green and red placards are your unspoken way of communicating that you’re either just getting started or you simply cannot eat another bite (for the moment). And for a prime example of what makes the Brazilian steakhouse experience so memorable, head to Galpão Gaucho.

The dining room itself here is warm and inviting, with plenty of room. (There are two separate party rooms with televisions for much larger groups.) Upon getting seated, choose a fully stocked salad bar or both the salad bar and 17 different cuts of meat. At lunchtime

from Monday to Friday, the salad bar option is just $36, with the full experience $55; for dinner and weekends, the packages are $36 and $75, respectively.

We heavily recommend choosing both options, because the salad bar here is packed with goodness. Everything is fresh and delicious—deviled eggs, salads, fresh fruit, soups, charcuterie, pastas and much more will have you piling your plate high, perhaps even returning for seconds. (Although we don’t necessarily recommend that, given the meat odyssey you are about to embark on.)

Whatever time of day you decide to dine here, make sure to include a cocktail! Galpão Gaucho has all the classics, including the Caipirinha, the traditional cocktail of Brazil, with fresh muddled lime, sugar and Brazilian rum, or the Carajillo, an espresso drink with Licor 43. If your tastes veer more toward whiskeys, try the barrel-aged Manhattan, featuring Bulleit rye, Carpano vermouth and bitters. The meat experience at Galpão Gaucho is extremely authentic—everything is prepared according to cultural standards, and servers are even willing

(and able) to take customers through the history of the cuisine. So feel free to ask as many questions as you want while enjoying cuts like beef tenderloin, ribeye, beef bottom sirloin, picanha, filet mignon, leg of lamb, bacon-wrapped chicken, grilled salmon, and so many more. Just in case you don’t have enough to choose from, servers will bring you mashed potatoes and sweet caramelized bananas (an ideal way to clean your palate between meats).

We wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t have room for dessert, but please, please reconsider here! There are so many decadent options, and they’re all ideal for sharing. The crème brulée is garnished with fresh berries, and the tres leches cake (white cake soaked in three different types of milk) is made from an authentic Latino recipe. For something a bit lighter, try the papaya cream, fresh papaya blended with vanilla ice cream and served with a blackberry liqueur.

By the time the members of Maroon 5 hit the stage for the latest shows of Maroon 5: The Las Vegas Residency in Las Vegas, they will likely have a good idea of which new songs will be included on their next studio album. Lucky fans may even be able to hear one or two, or a ri or hook from an unreleased track. Regardless, anything new debuted at Dolby Live will be an inside job—no collabs.

At least that’s what vocalist Adam Levine indicated in interviews following a certain Rolling Stone going viral last month for making moves to Maroon 5’s hit “Moves Like Jagger.” Mick’s moment in the social media spotlight created a full circle between the song and the subject, emphasizing the maturing of Maroon 5 into an institution that could endure until a popular band writes a song along the lines of “Moves Like Levine.”

guitarist James Carmichael and bassist Sam Farrar and set about recording Songs About Jane. The album spawned three hits in “Harder to Breathe,” “This Love,” and “She Will Be Loved” that gave Maroon 5 a foundation to build a solid career on. The songs also demonstrated the penchant for producing hooks Levine, Carmichael and Valentine possessed.

Maroon 5 gave pop music listeners a chance to pivot away from boy bands, but they’d soon grow beyond the borders of being a self-contained songwriting unit.

Levine had provided vocals to the chorus of Kanye West’s “Heard ’Em Say” by the time Maroon 5 recorded sophomore album It Won’t Be Soon Before Long, which marked the entrance of drummer Matt Flynn.

That album was helmed by über producer Mutt Lange, but it was “Moves Like Jagger” that foreshadowed what was to come for Maroon 5. Christina Aguilera guested, with rising producers Benny Blanco and Shellback making beats and mixing. By the time Overexposed was released in 2012, Maroon 5 had started

forming relationships that would result in future hits with the likes of rapper Wiz Khalifa (“Payphone”) producer Max Martin (“One More Night”) and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder (“Maps”).

Lead single for 2017’s Red Pill Blues “Don’t Wanna Know” featured Kendrick Lamar, which indirectly brought Maroon 5 into the conflict between Lamar and Drake. The latter’s dis track “Push Ups” mocked Lamar’s contributions to Taylor Swift as well as Maroon 5, placing the band in good company—if not a glowing light.

Deciding to become a self-contained writing unit seems more like an inevitable return to roots for Maroon 5. Anyone who has attended the band’s Vegas residency can attest that the band is at the height of its powers as a live act. Levine is one of the most talented showmen of his generation, and the musicians’ prowess (rounded out by keyboardist PJ Morton) is on display live in a way that can’t come across in polished pop recordings. Don’t be surprised if they apply it to a Drake tribute during a special portion of the show.

There’s something for everyone to laugh at in Vegas this week

There’s no shortage of chuckling to be had in the valley this week. With comedy clubs booked and busy, and stand-up icons filling theaters, laughter abounds all over this town. Surely there’s a show for you, so secure your tickets and get to giggling!

Before he came to Las Vegas, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was known mainly for his mob ties, but once he bought up 95 shares of the Nevada Project Corporation (the company that built the Flamingo), he became associated with this city forever. Siegel came to Vegas in 1945 and took over the building of the Flamingo from businessman Billy Wilkerson, who ran out of money. So Siegel purchased the shares (seen here) for $250 apiece and opened the hotel in 1946. After the construction costs ballooned to more than $6 million, the hotel ended up closing only six months later and Siegel returned to L.A. Less than a year later, he was gunned down in his girlfriend Virginia Hill’s home—some say it was a hit ordered by the mob, revenge for losing all those millions they lent Siegel to build the Flamingo.

Dig up a treasure trove of gems at Nevada State Museum

Step away from the Las Vegas Strip for a spell and step inside the history

of the Silver State at the Nevada State Museum. In the museum, spread across 70,000 square feet that includes two exhibits (one permanent and one changing), in addition to a library and public spaces, discover the state’s history, from the prehistoric era to the more recent one when showgirls shimmied across the stage.

Take a self-guided walk through the permanent exhibit, which houses a mix of real pieces and educational, hands-on props. Discover the period when dinosaurs dominated the desert and read about Nevada’s indigenous animals and flora and fauna. Learn about the early life of the Native American population as well as the first adventurers that sought out gold and silver in the Nevada mountains. The hands-on props of mining towns, wagons and settlers’ camps add to the experience, with actual personal effects lending a personal touch. The timeline of Nevada’s history leads all the way up to the more current way of life with displays about the city’s atomic history, the historic Westside, Helldorado Days and the building of the Las Vegas Strip over the decades.

Across from the permanent exhibit is the changing exhibit, currently hosting Liberace: Real and Beyond. These fabulous pieces that belonged to the phenom piano player include actual costumes, furniture from his home and the famous candelabras,

plus placards of little-known facts about his life, such as: Did you know that Liberace almost died in 1963 in a Pittsburgh dressing room? He was attempting to clean one of his costumes and inhaled a toxic amount of drycleaning fluid and suffered kidney failure; he was even

administered his last rites by a priest.

The museum is filled with a treasure trove of pieces with interesting backstories, and here we’ve pulled just a few for you to peruse … but we suggest getting over to the museum yourself to discover all the gems it houses.

Before the crowded skyline of Las Vegas that you see today, the city was only mountains and valley as depicted here, in what is believed to be the first painting of Las Vegas from 1876. It was painted by Frederick Dellenbaugh, a young adventurer from Ohio who was on a mapping expedition and stopped by the Las Vegas ranch (seen in the painting) that was set up for travelers going to and from California. Besides this artwork, Dellenbaugh would go on to write two books about the Colorado River and the American Southwest.

American actress Clara Bow was Hollywood’s “It Girl” of the 1920s silent film era, but by the mid-’30s she would call Nevada home. In 1931, she married fellow actor Rex Bell, and together they moved to Searchlight, Nev., to open a working ranch. Hollywood wasn’t left too far behind, though, as seen here in her personal address book, where she kept many a famous name and their contacts, including Gone With the Wind director Victor Fleming and some of the bigwigs at Fox Studios.

In the 1870s, many Chinese immigrants settled in Nevada to help work the mines and build the railroads. Being so far away from their country, many of the Chinese re-created their homeland in segregated areas often called Chinatowns. An important part of daily Chinese life included religion; houses of worship were built and called Joss Houses. Seen here are three actual drums used for ceremonial music played inside a Joss House in Elko, Nev., in the 1870s.

The man who helped build Las Vegas, Howard Hughes first visited the city in the spring of 1953 and took up residence in The Little Green House that now stands on the property of local news station KLAS Channel 8. While Hughes only lived in the house for a year, he left behind many of his personal items, like the ones seen here (even his enema bag!). The items were recently donated to the museum. And, fun fact, you can see the inside of the house if you watch the movie Casino (it’s the actor James Woods’ home)!

Pearl Jam makes fewer stops but plays more on its recent world tour

In the streaming era, an album release must be an event to garner attention beyond the music press. While the latest long plays by Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were to some degree calculated to court mainstream media, Pearl Jam’s latest, Dark Matter, is an event release by default. The band’s 12th studio album is an organic e ort helmed by a wunderkind superfan producer, yielding 11 new songs to mix into the sprawling set lists of the

band's 26-city, 40-date Dark Matter World Tour

With less commuting comes more time to rest and less clutter in Eddie Vedder’s mind as he surveys the preconcert scenes and creates set lists tailored for the audiences. It’s a given that “Wreckage,” the first single from Dark Matter, will be included in most shows,

and likely that several standout tracks will be frequent inclusions.

Opening track, “Scared of Fear,” is one of the strongest cuts on an album conceived and produced mostly as a group e ort. A burst of buoyant guitar chordage, reminiscent of ’70s cult power poppers Big Star, is followed by lyrics that feel very Vedder: “Oh, did I say

something wrong?/ Oh, did I walk out of step?/ To you, do I still belong?/ Do I have to be scared?”

In an era where creatives are careful to avoid drawing troll fire, it’s not surprising to consider Pearl Jam’s long-held authenticity aspirations at odds with contemporary currents of conformity. “Scared of Fear” can be interpreted as weighing the contrast between nostalgic imagery of carefree music scenes past against the chaos and confusion that needs to be processed in the present.

Producer Andrew Watt treads a most unprocessed path through his own creative process. Unlike 2020’s Gigaton, where most material was brought to the band by its members as individual songwriters, Watt encouraged the musicians to assemble before fertilizing their common ground at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La recording studio in Malibu.

The studio was famously built by The Band in the mid-’70s, and Watt set the stage for casual collaboration with a wizardlike work ethic, a comprehensive understanding of Pearl Jam’s music and a collection of amplifiers and instruments to explore. Watt, born less than 10 months before the release of Pearl Jam’s debut album, Ten, made magic on Vedder’s 2022 solo album, Earthling. Watt was, as Vedder has described, a wave he wanted his bandmates to catch. Driving second track “React, Respond” rocks with pounding angular hooks as Vedder dispenses advice for the lostin-a-crowd contingent. Drummer Matt Cameron makes his presence known on title track as Vedder decries demagogues against a backdrop of stomping ri age.

Lighter moments come with the acoustics of “Wreckage” and sentimental “Won’t Tell.” Dark Matter closes on final track “Setting Sun,” which may have drawn its title from the lyrics to “Scared of Fear.” It’s the most reassuring and optimistic cut on the album, the salve that, in the end, fans look forward to from one of rock’s most enduring bands.
