Music to Our Ears

I’ve spoken at length in this space in the past about the impact on Las Vegas of the residency, a part of the city’s history that goes all the way back to the days of the Rat Pack, of Liberace, of Elvis Presley. And it will continue to be part of the city’s history far into the future. More and more are being announced every day as bands all over the music spectrum realize the benefits: They don’t have to tour as much, and they get production values not available in any other city.

This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is dedicated to the residency. And we begin with perhaps the most exciting announcement in some time: The Strip is going to have its fi rst-ever Spanish-language residency beginning this week with Los Bukis, a group that goes all the way back to the 1970s and brings a rich catalog of genre classics to Dolby Live at Park MGM (“Spanning the Generations,” p. 32).

And returning with her newest Vegas residency is Shania Twain, one of the best-selling female artists of all time. Expect plenty of fan favorites at her Come On Over shows at Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood (“Looks Like She Made It,” p. 38). Also returning this week is Carlos Santana, whose An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay always promises plenty of surprises (“Divinely Validated,” p. 40).

Think we’re done? Not remotely. Donny Osmond continues his amazing run at Harrah’s Las Vegas (“Having a Ball,” p. 12). DJs also enjoy extended residencies in Las Vegas, including DJ Snake, the hitmaker who brings the beats back to Resorts World Las Vegas this week (“Brushes With Greatness,” p. 20).

If you’re a live music fan, you really couldn’t have picked a better week to visit. Enjoy!

Having a Ball

Iconic entertainer is always finding new ways to spice up his Strip residency

There’s an extremely cool new segment in Donny Osmond’s spectacular production on the Strip. He performs “We’re Having a Party,” which was a big hit for The Osmonds in the United Kingdom in 1974, but Donny adds an element that elevates a great number into an instant classic. He and his cast begin throwing beach ballsized, glowing orbs out into the crowd, turning the moment into a rave-like scene, with audience members keeping all the balls constantly in the air. (Yes, even those with a drink in their hand!)

It’s an incredibly fun moment in a show that’s already packed with so much entertainment value, all from a man who’s spent almost his entire life in show business. He covers literally every moment of his storied career, from his days with his brothers to the hit television show he co-starred in with sister Marie and his transition to movies, television and Broadway.

You’ll see the dance moves that won him Dancing With the Stars. You’ll feel the charisma that continues to make his

fans scream at every performance. And you’ll enjoy the self-deprecating sense of humor that has made him one of the most relatable performers on the planet. Wait until you see him try to perform any song from his discography on request. It’s often hysterical as he gets words wrong or just blanks completely. But as it perfectly illustrates, Donny Osmond can do no wrong. –Ken Miller

Cheer on Your Favorite Fighter

Metal melee promises plenty of robotic action

It’s knives out! And hammers and claws! And all sorts of implements that might be deadly to humans! It’s BattleBots Destruct-A-Thon! In this incredibly exciting evening of robotic mayhem at Caesars Entertainment Studios at Horseshoe Las Vegas, you’ll find a whole cast of machines from throughout the history of the hit TV series, fighting for dominance.

The matchups vary from night to night, pitting Whiplash, Tazbot, Bronco, Chopper, Overkill, Mammoth, Kraken, Malice, Witch Doctor, Hypershock and Nightmare against one another (although not all fight each night). Each bot has its own backing and hype team, and trash talk before each match is common—not to mention hilarious. Bil Dwyer and Steve Judkins take hosting duties.

Before the matches, watch highlights of each bot’s previous TV glory on screens around the arena. In that huge arena, constructed of thickened glass on all sides to keep spectators from injury, a number of pitfalls surround the floor, from enormous hammers smacking down randomly to saw blades emerging from the floor.

Then, the machine is guided out to fighting position, and away they go, with the operators trying to flip, cut and smash the opponent. There’s a fair bit of strategy, with robots trying to drive the others into the pitfalls.

Grandstand seating stretches the length of each side of the arena, with Platinum club seating at the end, opposite the robot entrance area. You’ll have a good view of the arena no matter where you are sitting, though. There’s merch, snacks and drinks to be had, too, and it’s all family friendly. Parking is available off Koval Lane. If you are thinking about a return trip to Vegas, you might want to check out the BattleBots Proving Ground, where rookies get a chance for battle, and vets can try out new weapons. Those matches occur during regular shows on selected nights. –Nina King

ESCAPE TO CALMER WATERS

$10 OFF FOR LOCALS

Tuck Into the (Emerald) Island

From apps to mains, this pub will remind you of Ireland

Irish food is one of my favorite cuisines, and not just because I’m covered in freckles. It’s especially good when accompanied by a nice beverage, and at Rí Rá Irish Pub in The Shoppes at Mandalay Place, you can get all the traditional food you crave, and all the beer and cider, too. You can even ask for an Irish coffee flight, and that’s sure to lead to a fun time.

Start your meal with potato cakes— yummy fried mashed potato patties combined with cheddar cheese, green

onion and sour cream. They’re drizzled with balsamic vinegar here, not exactly like mom made, but darned close.

There’s also a take on Scotch eggs, with sausage molded to boiled egg, which is filled with a deviled egg mousse. Sausage rolls, chicken wings and baked goat cheese will get you ready for the main course.

There are plenty of salads, but for a bit heartier meal, opt for beef and Guinness stew, Irish chicken curry or fish and chips,

with lager-beer battered Icelandic haddock and optional mushy peas. An Irish breakfast is served all day, with eggs, bangers, rashers, toast, tomato, mushrooms, and black and white pudding. It’ll keep you fueled day and night. Speaking of breakfast, try the boxty stuffed with banger, red pepper and eggs—worth getting up early for. –Nina King

Night Fever

You may have heard about this venue welcoming pop sensations Kylie Minogue and Christina Aguilera, but what you may not know is that Voltaire at The Venetian also has its own production, Belle de Nuit , and it’s a whole lot of fun.

French for “beauty of the night,” Belle de Nuit features striking performers with all kinds of talents, all wrapped up in a Studio 54-esque theme that ensures you’ll never know what to expect next. One minute, you’ll see Joan of Arc take to the pole (and display some impressive athleticism), the next you’ll be wowed by bondage gear-clad aerialists, then slightly Sapphic astronauts and their tandem acrobatics.

It’s obvious this show was created specifically for Voltaire, and it uses the space well. Each number allows time for the performers to strut up and down the long runway that juts out from the center of the stage, which is perfect, because each act features stylish and creative wardrobe pieces that really deserve their time in the spotlight. In a stroke of genius, the chairs in the venue swivel! So no, you won’t be uncomfortably craning your neck all night long.

The energy doesn’t stop at the stage, either; performers roam throughout the crowd as guests find their seats and during each number, making the experience feel immersive. If one thing can be said for sure, it’s that there are no bad seats in the house.

Clearly inspired by the exciting nightlife of the disco days, this show acts as almost a hybrid between your typical variety show and a party. A live DJ spins tracks throughout the whole evening, and the emcee pauses the show twice to allow for some moving and grooving while you socialize with those around you.

Don’t forget to glance around the room, as the decor here is like nothing else. Clear bubbles float above plush pink seats while blue and purple-toned lighting illuminates the large crystal-like structures that frame the main stage while the bar in the back of the room buzzes, creating a night on the town you absolutely need to have. –Em Jurbala

Hitmaking DJ has collaborated with some of the biggest names in music

The artists that DJ Snake has collaborated with reads like a who’s who in the music industry, from Lady Gaga and Megan Thee Stallion to Justin Bieber and Lil Jon (he just released a record with Peso Pluma, and debuted it at Coachella). Can You Keep It Quiet?

Speakeasy is inspired by classic Bronx-based movie

If the name sounds familiar then you might be a fan of the classic 1993 movie A Bronx Tale. In the movie, Chez Bippy was the bar that the gang frequented; this iteration is MGM Grand’s newest drinking and lounging hot spot.

But just as the bar in the movie was easily spotted on the corner of the Bronx neighborhood, this bar is a little harder to find, hence its speakeasy status. Look for the property’s newest Italian American restaurant, Luchini. The restaurant from Las Vegas nightlife and dining juggernaut The Tao Group is a “restaurant reminiscent of classic red sauce joints found throughout New York City,” as described on its website. Attached to the restaurant is the slice shop, a pizza-by-the-slice, quick-service counter where you can grab a slice to go or sit down at one of the few tables in the back. While you’re sitting in the back, see if you notice three candy vending machines. Behind one of the machines is the secret Chez Bippy.

One of the machines pushes back to reveal red curtains—and through the curtains is the in-the-know, beautiful, bougie speakeasy. This intimate

space houses just a few tables and sofa seating, and a few seats at the bar. The low lighting, marble-topped tables, luxurious fabrics and accessories add to Chez Bippy’s glamour. This is a perfect spot to dress up and sip in style.

The focus at this speakeasy is the specialty cocktails—elevated, impressive presentations that are twists on classic libations that implement Italian-inspired flavors. Begin with the Fellini, inspired by director Federico

Fellini. “The wafting smoke is evocative of Fellini’s ethereal, mystical films he’s known for making,” said Jan Padiernos, director of beverage for Tao Group and the creator of Chez Bippy’s cocktail menu. “This cocktail is a sweet and savory take on the classic Boulevardier cocktail.” It’s a mix of Bulleit bourbon, Campari, Barolo Chinato Cocchi and vanilla-anise tincture that is topped with a pizzelle, a classic, delightful Italian cookie. As it is presented tableside, the cocktail’s cover is lifted to reveal a waft of hickory smoke with a hint of cinnamon.

Fans of martinis should order the Martini Classico. The classic cocktail highlights the flavors of Italy with a mix

of Absolut Elyx vodka that has been infused with pepperoncinis and then mixed with Dolin dry vermouth and a Castelvetrano olive and caper brine. The cocktail is then served with pepperoncinis, olives and fresh mozzarella

on the side. A carafe holds the cocktail and rests on ice to keep it chilled until it is finished.

The Bella Notte is the perfect closure to the evening at Chez Bippy. “It’s an affogato meets an espresso martini,” Padiernos said. “It’s a satisfying conclusion to a beautiful evening, hence the name Bella Notte.” The sweet, delicious mix of Belvedere vodka, Licor 43, Borghetti coffee liqueur, Frangelico and freshly brewed espresso is poured over a scoop of vanilla gelato.

“When you come into Chez Bippy you’re coming into a transformative experience,” Padiernos said. “We have very skilled bartenders equipped to make anything, even off menu. Of course, we’d like guests to enjoy the cocktail menu that we’ve curated for them, but our team is very talented, and they like to express their creativity with cocktails.” –Kiko Miyasato

Helicopter pilot takes guests’ vacation to new heights

When it comes to his career, Buck Hewlett is literally flying high! He’s the night lead pilot for Maverick Helicopters. Book a flight over the Las Vegas Strip as the sun sets and the neon shines or take a soar over the Grand Canyon as day gives into night, and it may be Hewlett that pilots your once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Even with all that flight experience, Hewlett adds more to his job than just flying. As the night lead pilot, he’s responsible for the scheduling of the other pilots, staying on top of daily operations,

Oscar’s Steakhouse serves up respected dishes downtown

Get a taste of old-time Vegas downtown, where Oscar’s Steakhouse harkens back to the days when the mob ruled Vegas and Oscar Goodman, for whom the restaurant is named and was once mayor and chief cheerleader of Las Vegas (his wife, Carolyn, serves in those roles now), got his start. As you enter, check out the photos of Oscar and assorted stars and celebrities.

You could make a stop at the bar (happy hour is 5-7 p.m., hint, hint) and order up a cocktail, including the Hizzoner, with Bombay Sapphire gin and a jalapeño—that’s it, and you’ve got the signature drink he was almost always seen drinking.

You’ve got choices, though, and you’ll notice inventive naming that references both Goodman’s background as a mob lawyer and Nevada in general. Try the Pearalegal, with Goslings Black Seal rum, spiced pear liqueur and sour apple, or the Defendant, with Larceny bourbon and

Bauchant orange. The Ranch Hand features Frey Ranch bourbon, one of only a few spirits distilled in Nevada, and honey syrup. Go ahead and take that drink to your table. You might be seated at one of the plush leather booths under the glass dome or out on the elegant new patio looking onto Fremont Street across Main.

Like the cocktail menu, the dishes here often bear colorful names with references to the past, like Sal’s jumbo shrimp cocktail with spiced cocktail sauce. (Have you ever wondered if it’s a big little shrimp, or a lotta little shrimp, or not even a shrimp at all? It’s a big little shrimp, a really big little shrimp, up to four times as big as other, bittier shrimp.) You can get crab and lobster cocktail as well, plus oysters on the half shell.

Other great appetizers and salads include No Nose’s Mob Meatballs, with house-made ricotta, Parmesan and basil, Crazy Phil’s Onion Soup and Vinnie F’s Steakhouse Wedge, with Point Reyes blue cheese and peppered bacon.

You’ve got your choice of entrées, like seared day boat scallops with caviar beurre blanc and melted leeks. Day boat scallops are revered for their freshness, and are harvested

in a 24-hour period. But decadent braised short rib “Rossini,” with Hudson Valley foie gras, branzino, Skuna Bay salmon, lamb chops and Mary’s organic chicken offer everyone their favorite.

The name game’s back with the beef selections—Carolyn’s 16-ounce prime rib, Joey C’s 8-ounce filet mignon and Oscar’s 24-ounce bone-in ribeye are some the most popular. But they do get bigger.

Jonny’s 44-ounce tomahawk and the 40-ounce porterhouse may bring tears to your eyes. Accompany one of those with Sheriff Ralph’s Mashed Potatoes. Broccoli almondine, creamed corn, and mac and cheese (lobster optional) round out sides.

Classic desserts like cheesecake, chocolate cake and carrot cake will give you the excuse to linger a while longer—perhaps while you indulge in another Hizzoner?

Los Bukis makes history as the first Spanish-language residency on the Strip

Los Bukis with a third member who has remained with subsequent incarnations.

Los Bukis hit its stride in 1982 with the release of seventh studio album Yo Te Necesito, which garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Mexican-American performance. The lone composition not written by Marco Antonio, “Las Musiqueras,” was also the title of a film that starred the band, which would achieve cultural icon status during the decade.

It was inevitable that Mexican music would be represented with a Strip residency. The stars of banda, mariachi, norteño, Tejano and related subgenres have long found Las Vegas a welcoming environment. It’s particularly good timing for grupero gigante Los Bukis to have reunited in the wake of Vegas music venues upping their games to accommodate extended stays by the biggest acts from every major style of popular music.

Los Bukis was around for a quarter of a century before founding member Marco Antonio Solís went his own way in the mid-’90s. The bandleader carved out a successful career as a solo artist and songwriter for other singers as the rest of Los Bukis continued on under another name, but the appetite for the music of Los Bukis remained as constant over the years.

The lush, romantic music of Los Bukis has been a constant presence in Spanish-speaking households on both sides of the U.S./Mexican border ever since. It crosses generations, marks occasions, provided the backdrop for countless first dates and quinceañeras, and has been on set lists for an inestimable amount of wedding receptions and school dances.

The band enjoyed 17 Top 10 Hot Latin hits and five No. 1s before its hiatus, but a post-pandemic reunion tour was wildly successful. Una Historia Cantada kicked off Aug. 27, 2021, at SoFi Stadium with a set list that included “Tu Carcel,” “Cómo Fui a Enamorarme de Ti,” “Y Ahora Te Vas” and “Quiéreme.” As far as fans were concerned, it was a musical miracle.

ticketmaster.com

That music has its origins in early 1970s Michoacán, where Marco Antonio formed a band with cousin Joel Solís. Los Bukis released its debut album, Falso Amor, as a quartet in 1975, with Marco receiving sole credit as songwriter. By 1980, the band had moved to the U.S. and added flamboyant conga player José Javier Solís, providing

Now Los Bukis plans to make miracles at Park MGM’s Dolby Live, joining a roster of rotating talent that has included Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Mariah Carey and Maroon 5.

Los Bukis has demonstrated the capability to fill nearby Allegiant Stadium, but Los Bukis: La Residencia enables audiences to return to Las Vegas for a more intimate affair in a 5,200-seat venue with a state-ofthe-art sound system capable of capturing every nuance of Marco Antonio’s songs.

So far there are 15 dates, which could be followed by many more if the Los Bukis reunion becomes permanent for the time being. More regional Mexican acts will follow in Los Bukis’ footsteps, but for now Michoacan’s finest stands alone atop the headliner hill.

Shania Twain celebrates life, liberty and a record-setting album in her new residency

38 | 5.5.24 Las Vegas Magazine

The impetus of Shania Twain’s latest Las Vegas residency is a life force she’s been feeling, which is not all that di erent than the energy that drove the landmark album it’s named after. Twain released Come On Over, her third collaboration with producer and then-husband Mutt Lange, in November 1997. It was a deliberate departure from her first two albums, which were aimed at country music audiences even if they drew on pop songwriting sensibilities and rock production methods.

This time Twain drew on the spectrum of styles she absorbed while growing up as a performer, taking a chance she could expand her fandom without alienating core listeners, or further alienating the country music industry at large after her second studio album, The Woman in Me, enjoyed crossover success. “I got a lot of criticism questioning my authenticity as a country artist, and I was foreign,” Ontario-born Twain said on the April 3 edition of music podcast

Twain favored Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette and George Jones as a performing preteen. “That is in me,” she said. “But I wanted to be my own artist, and the music was going to be a hybrid of all of my influences, stylistically—R&B, rock, folk and, of course, country.”

That hybrid came to full fruition with Come On Over. Hit singles including “You’re Still the One,” “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and the title track contributed to it becoming the biggest-selling album by a female solo artist of all time, according to Guinness World Records. The video for “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” paid homage to Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” video,” with an all-male backing band in place of Palmer’s iconic femme fatales.

At 58, Twain has seen Taylor Swift follow in her footsteps and take crossing over from country to places previously uncharted. She released her latest album, Queen of Me, a harbinger of the self-celebration to come, last year. Twain feels free to walk around the house naked if she wants, to dye her hair pink or wear a blonde wig, or to show o the results of a diet and exercise regime for a Haute Living photo shoot.

Twain’s previous Vegas residencies were hardly no-frills a airs when it came to set design and wardrobe, but this time she wants to contemporize her show in terms of tech and taste. She wants fashion-forward designs that will dazzle even in comparison to the elaborate couture she donned for her previous Planet Hollywood residency Let’s Go!

Song Exploder. “I wasn’t American, never mind I wasn’t Southern. So I was o ensive to some of them and they made it pretty clear, but I knew I belonged there because those were my roots.”

And she plans on mixing up the set lists and song orders night to night. Whatever is driving her, Twain is filled with the spirit that inspired her ascension to stardom and the resilience that kept her there. It’s that spirit that audiences will receive at Come On Over

Santana returns to Vegas residency after streaming release of Carlos documentary

Long-awaited biographical documentary Carlos was released to theaters in September for a limited run after being screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in July. Now it’s available for streaming and provides the perfect warm-up before attending An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live. Carlos Santana has been leading his band through career-spanning sets at their House of Blues residency since May 2012, but the film makes it possible to know the man and his music intimately before seeing him live.

A first-person memoir, The Universal Tone: Bringing My Story to Light, was published in November 2014 and gives similar insight into his origins, musical evolution and spiritual journey. It could not provide visuals of his father playing the violin or capture the wonder in Santana’s voice as he describes hearing birds singing in response to José Santana’s bowed-string melodies.

The youthful Santana would first learn music on violin. His father was a classically trained mariachi musician, so theory was instilled before he first heard a guitarist playing through an amplifier. Santana would

702.632.7600

exchange four strings for six and become a disciple of blues players such as B.B. King and Albert King, both of whom he would one day play with onstage.

His fate was sealed in San Francisco. Carlos the film depicts the

circumstances that led to the ambitious, driven Santana meeting promoter Bill Graham and being invited to play the Fillmore West. It reveals which Grateful Dead member gave him the acid that fueled his inspired playing at Woodstock. It allows him to relate how taking a spiritual path in the early ’70s helped him escape the tragic circumstances that affected peers such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison.

There is a lot of musical footage featuring dozens of musicians that helped him realize his musical visions. “Real musicians, they call it a force of nature,” he says early in the documentary. “They create a different kind of transformation molecular structure through sound resonance and vibration.”

Santana’s career had ups and downs, of course. The film climaxes with the story of the success of Supernatural, which reaches its silver

anniversary this year and garnered eight Grammys. Mega-hits from that album “Smooth” and “Maria Maria” have long been highlights of An Intimate Evening

There is one part of the film, which counts Ron Howard and Brian Grazer as executive producers and which was directed by rising filmmaker Rudy Valdez, that was particularly poignant: Santana relates the story about how his father lost the will to go on once he could no longer play the violin. It’s not sad, it’s just what happened.

One day Santana himself will no longer be able to play his chosen instrument. That day is long in the future judging from the fretwork he demonstrated in Carlos. For now, he leads a contented existence performing in a band with wife Cindy Blackman on drums, providing a reallife ending of the documentary for fans that attend his concerts after seeing the film.
