Fighting Words

One of the greatest fighters I ever saw was Oscar De La Hoya. From 1992 to 2008, this man absolutely dominated his sport, not just in the ring but outside it as well, arguably one of the sport’s best ambassadors ever. And while winning 11 world titles on his way to a 39-6 record, he elevated the sport to a new level. And De La Hoya wants to do that again, only this time as a promoter. He’s moved his company, Golden Boy Promotions, to Las Vegas, and in an exclusive interview with Las Vegas Magazine, he discusses his vision for the sport going forward, starting with a super-middleweight title bout between Canelo Álvarez and Jaime Munguía at T-Mobile Arena this week (“A Gentlemen’s Match,” p. 32).

And there’s so much more to enjoy in this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine. If you want to see a show, check out our features on Absinthe at Caesars Palace, which celebrates its 13th anniversary this year (“Life’s a Naughty Circus,” p. 34), and ROUGE at The STRAT, an adults-only show that celebrates beauty in all its forms (“Risqué Business,” p. 36 ).

If you’re looking for some live music and love the ’80s, defi nitely check out Scorpions’ amazing production at Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood (“Still Stinging,” p. 40).

How about some magic? While Las Vegas arguably has more magicians per capita than any other city, by far the longest-lasting act is Penn & Teller, still going strong at Rio Las Vegas after several decades (“Out of Thin Air,” p. 38).

Looking to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? We’ve got two great Mexican restaurants lined up: Mi Casa Grill Cantina at Silverton Casino Lodge (“Great Combinations,” p. 28); and ¡VIVA! by Ray Garcia at Resorts World Las Vegas (“Seconds? ¡Sí!” p. 14).

It’s a fun time to be here. We’re glad you are.

Let Him Be Your Wings

Forget

your cares and worries at this iconic entertainer’s long-running residency

Barry Manilow never met Elvis Presley, but he did stay in the original Elvis Suite when Westgate Las Vegas was The Hilton. “It was an older suite, but it was huge,” Manilow told Las Vegas Magazine in an exclusive interview. “It was the entire floor, the entire 30th floor, so I did get a sense of where he actually stayed when he was there.”

The 30th floor was remodeled shortly after Manilow’s 1985 Hilton debut. He stays in the current Elvis Suite when he flies into Vegas for his Barry Manilow: The Hits Come Home shows. For Manilow, it was love at first sight when he saw the stage. (Last year, Manilow broke Presley’s record at the property). Arenas let him take his music to the masses, but he considers the stage and audience capacity at the International Theater perfect for what he does.

“I like traveling into the audience,” said Manilow. “I have trouble being as intimate as I want to be with an arena. It’s fun and it’s exciting, but it’s a whole different kind of feeling than the Westgate. The Westgate is the perfect room for me. Out of all the rooms that I’ve ever played, this is the one for me. If I was building one for myself, this is the size I would have built.”

Anyone who’s seen Manilow perform “Copacabana” there would agree, as set design and a flight of stairs allow Manilow to perform above the audience as he sings of music, passion and fashion. It’s a place where Fanilows of the world make a pilgrimage to their favorite singer, where songs transport them to happier times and longtime fans dance as if the decades since “Daybreak” never happened. “These people are so happy, and they’re all ages,” said Manilow. “That’s why I still do it. Everything changed because I realized that’s why I’m on that stage. That’s why I’m there. It’s to make them feel great. It’s to make them forget their cancer and their divorces, and if they lost their job.” Mission accomplished, sir. –Matt Kelemen

Seconds? ¡Sí!

Enjoy

No matter what time of day you frequent the vibrant and fun ¡VIVA! by Ray Garcia , you’re guaranteed an experience full of flavorful twists.

The welcoming, colorful space is the perfect environment to enjoy award-winning chef Garcia’s signature cuisine, a reflection of his extensive training in Southern California. There’s something here for everyone, from meat-eaters to vegans, and it’s all made under the philosophy of responsible farming and food production. Eating here will make you feel good, both about yourself and the planet.

If you’re here for brunch (11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays), dive into dishes like huevos rancheros, this version made with a cheese gordita, sunny-side-up eggs, ranchero salsa and salsa verde, or the breakfast burrito, stuffed full of good stuff like applewood-smoked bacon, scrambled eggs, fingerling potatoes, cheddar cheese, guacamole and salsa tatemada. Make it a real party with an orange, mango or watermelon mimosa—or two.

Lunch (Monday through Friday) is where Garcia’s tacos shine. They really are some of the best you’ll find on the entire Strip. I personally recommend camarones, featuring marinated shrimp, cabbage slaw,

pineapple salsa, cilantro crema and guacamole. Best of all, you get three tacos per order, so you can explore some of the other options as well, from chicken tinga to vegan coliflor al pastor. If you want to skip a cocktail, go straight for the cucumber agua fresca—so refreshing!

Definitely make plans for dinner here (Sunday through Thursday), where Garcia’s platos especiales are the star of the evening. Seafood fans will definitely want to order either the snapper zarandeado, woodgrilled snapper drizzled with citrus adobo and chili toreado, or enchiladas de langosta, made with Maine lobster, quesillo, guajillo and crème fraîche. Poultry lovers won’t want to miss the pollo rostizado, a half chicken served with rice, roasted carrots and ginger sofrito. And for you carnivores out there, it doesn’t get better than barbacoa, featuring succulent short rib, domingo rojo beans and bacon.

For dessert, I highly recommend the helados, three scoops of your choice: ice cream (corn tortilla and chocolate) and sorbet (mango passion and coconut lime). It’s a perfect way to finish up a perfect Mexican meal. –Ken Miller

Sixty Years of Sweet Success

The popular entertainer celebrates a very varied career in Strip residency

For thousands of fans who have seen Donny Osmond ’s oneman show at Harrah’s Las Vegas, it’s a show for the ages. But for the man himself, it’s much more than that. “It’s a celebration more than a show … it’s like This Is Your Life,” Osmond said in an interview with Las Vegas Magazine. And once you see the show yourself, you’ll most likely agree; after all, this no-holds-barred production is a summation of Osmond’s more than six decades of performing.

Yes, you read that right: Osmond has been performing almost since he could walk. And it’s no exaggeration to say Osmond has done it all and made his mark on every aspect of pop culture. Lest you doubt us, wait until you see the show’s highlight, an auto rapography in which Osmond takes his audience on his life’s journey. Even going at breakneck speed, it takes almost 10 minutes.

The preparation for that segment was “huge,” Osmond told Las Vegas Magazine. “The memorization of that took a long time. When I came up with the idea, I called my director and asked, because we are trying to put six decades into 90 minutes, ‘What do you think about me doing a rap?’ He starting laughing and thought it was brilliant.” Judging by the nightly reactions to the set piece, Osmond’s director was spot on.

What’s really cool about this show is how Osmond takes plenty of time to detail his various successes, from an elaborate production number from Mulan (he was Captain Li Shang, remember?) to dance moves that show how he won his season of Dancing With the Stars. And fans of The Masked Singer no doubt remember his performance as the peacock. He’s picked up a whole slew of new fans from just that appearance.

His body of work is so massive that even Osmond can’t remember it all, a point he makes very clear during a segment where he asks audience members to choose a song from one of his countless albums. Don’t be surprised if he ad-libs his way through it! But man, is it fun. Join the celebration. –Ken Miller

Celebrate the Kentucky Derby downtown

If you’re a fan of the Kentucky Derby (on race day, who isn’t?), Circa Resort & Casino is the place to be. With several events spread across the property on May 4, whether you want to dress to the nines, chill out in the sports book or take in the race poolside, you are covered.

From 2-5 p.m., Legacy Club hosts a blowout watch party, where guests can don their finest gear and compete in a fancy hat contest (you could win a $250 Legacy Club credit and bragging rights). Live music, hors d’oeuvres and derby-inspired bites, unlimited beer, wine, call spirits and specialty cocktails, as well as a mint julep and Aperol spritz bar, ensure things remain lively. Live audio and highdef televisions make sure you can catch every minute of the race (approximately 3:57 p.m.). The event price is $125 plus tax and includes everything.

For the hugest viewing experience, plan on reserving a cabana at Stadium Swim and witness the broadcast of the race on the 40-foot-tall screen, with full audio. –Nina King

Never Going Out of Style

World-class steakhouse shines with ambience, service and classic dishes

For a meal you’re really going to remember, you’ve gotta make it Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse, one of downtown’s—and the entire city’s— most-awarded restaurants (much like the original in Houston), and one whose standards are as high as the day it opened downtown.

All your favorites are here, from jumbo shrimp and calamari to fresh oysters on the half shell and steak tartare. But there are plenty of pleasant surprises as well, including maple-glazed quail with sriracha sauce and pepper-crusted bacon, roasted

with bourbon barrel maple syrup and a root beer glaze.

Steaks here feature USDA prime grain-fed beef, so when you dig into that filet mignon, prime ribeye, chateaubriand or porterhouse, you’ll taste the difference, especially when you complement them with Bearnaise, port peppercorn and blue cheese bacon butter. If you want beef but not steak, opt for the terrific wagyu braised beef, so tender and succulent.

The entrée menu’s options include plenty of poultry and fish options.

The fried lobster mac and cheese is a beast, made with a 5-pound lobster tail, cavatappi pasta and lobster cheese sauce, while succulent, pan-roasted chicken is served with mashed potatoes and asparagus.

Desserts don’t get much more iconic than Vic & Anthony’s In the Round, an impressive chocolate globe that is melted at your table, revealing banana semifreddo, roasted white chocolate crumble and bananas Foster sauce. –Ken Miller

Resorts World destination elevates the city’s club scene to a whole new level

A nightclub should at least be experienced once on a Las Vegas vacation— make it Zouk Nightclub at Resorts World Las Vegas. Why? For nearly three years, Zouk, a three-decades-old nightlife juggernaut out of Singapore, has shown this city how to party using the best in tech and talent.

“Since the opening of Zouk, the production was an immediate standout,” says Joe Lopez, vice president of nightlife and hospitality of Zouk Group Americas. “As one of the newest nightclubs in the city, the team really took advantage of all the new capabilities and created a venue that will deliver an immersive show. We have the brilliant Mothership, which is the centerpiece of each show, our ceiling panels, and an incredible state-of-the-art sound system developed in partnership with industry leader L’Acoustic. There’s just so much to every show and our production team is truly incredible.”

Guests can check out the mesmerizing and moving Mothership in the main room. (The nightclub offers two other spaces, a 360-degree bar with a top mixology program and a lounge

with more chill vibes). The Mothership was redesigned and inspired by the original in Zouk’s flagship nightclub in Singapore. The huge LED piece features a state-of-the-art lighting system and literally dances to the music throughout the night, making for those perfect, only-in-Vegas videos. The main area also features two bars, more than 1,000

square feet of dancefloor and tons of VIP banquettes for those that want to spend some extra dough and rest those aching dogs in between top musical performances.

Since its inception, Zouk Nightclub has crushed the roster of talent, signing big-name DJs like Tiësto, Zedd and DJ Snake, and this season is no exception.

“We’re thrilled to have Kaskade, who is incredible and is a pioneer within the industry,” Lopez says. “Illenium is one of our newest residents that takes advantage of the production and created a show unlike anything else you’ve seen from him. We have phenomenal artists like T-Pain, Odesza, Meduza, James Hype, and the list goes on.”

The talent lineup and dope design offerings flow right outside the doors to the nightclub’s daytime counterpart, Ayu Dayclub. “We have some exciting new things coming for Ayu Dayclub that we are looking forward to sharing soon,” Lopez says. “Additionally, returning to the dayclub this summer is our nighttime pool party, Jungle Cat,

and Kaskade’s Summer Lovin’ party concept.” The pool party is spread across two levels and the vibes and décor are reminiscent of the tropical islands in Southeast Asia.

“Zouk Group is elevating the nightlife scene in Las Vegas, and we continue to push boundaries,” Lopez says. “Our

Friends With Benefits

Rodrigo Carrillo

Making the most out of each opportunity

There are so many options and opportunities in Las Vegas that it’s very rare that a person stays with the same company for more than a few years. Rodrigo Carrillo, who runs beverage operations for Planet Hollywood, Paris Las Vegas and Horseshoe Las Vegas, is not one such person.

The California native has been with Caesars Entertainment for 12 years, starting out as a lifeguard. That turned into pool supervisor, then pool manager. He eventually moved indoors and began

managing various lounges at the aforementioned trio of properties; for the past two years he’s been in his current role. “My office is at Horseshoe, I park at Paris and I start my day at Planet Hollywood—I get my steps in.”

His purview includes the newly opened Glass Bar at Planet Hollywood (where he posed for our cameras). “I played a role in helping mold the soul of Glass Bar,” he says. “For all the bars and lounges I oversee, it’s a lot of testing and sampling

• Libation • Fruit & Pebble

“Glass Bar is an elevated guest experience,” says Carrillo. “It’s in the center of Planet Hollywood where all the action happens.” Try the Fruit & Pebble, inspired by the classic cereal. It’s made with Diplomático Planas rum, Taylor Fladgate Tawny Port, made-in-house Fruity Pebbles syrup and lime juice. –KM

and tweaking (the cocktails) to find the perfect match for the soul of each spot.”

While many aspects of Carrillo’s job are curated, his favorite part is the unexpected. “Coming into work every day is new— there’s always new opportunity to create the extraordinary for guests.” That’s an aspect of the job he’s enjoyed for the past dozen years. “I’m so happy with where I am right now. I attribute that to some of the mentors I’ve had that have built me up over the years.” –Kiko Miyasato

lthough you have plenty of options to celebrate Cinco de Mayo (and since it falls on a Sunday this year, all weekend to do that), a good meal makes the party even better. At Mi Casa Grill Cantina in Silverton Casino Lodge, indulge in authentic dishes and a large variety of tasty drinks and fine spirits.

Mexico is well known for its production of tequila, mezcals and other agave-based spirits, and they are well-represented at Mi Casa Grill Cantina, where you can choose from dozens of varieties for shooting or sipping, plus indulge in a specialty cocktail like the Smoked Mexican Old-Fashioned, which kicks up the classic drink with an infused mezcal with orange and cinnamon served in a sphere, or a Cadillac margarita, with Patrón Barrel Select, agave syrup, lime juice, sweet and sour and Grand Marnier. There are other inventive margaritas to choose from, plus a michelada and sangrias.

And it’s almost the law that you’ve got to order guacamole! Mi Casa Grill Cantina does it right,

with several varieties prepared tableside—the classic, with avocado, jalapeño, cilantro, lime juice, onion and tomato; mango guacamole, with all the previous ingredients plus mango; and lobster and mango guacamole, with lobster meat. Ceviche is also available with shrimp, grilled octopus and white fish. And sharing an order of nachos before your main meal is a sure way to get your taste buds racing—here they come with classic toppings of refried beans, cheese, jalapeños, pico de gallo and guacamole, plus enchilada sauce. Add chicken or beef for a bigger punch of flavor. The traditional camarones zarandiados features a spicy aioli on the butterflied grilled shrimp. An elote bowl is served with grilled corn, crema, cotija and Tajín, and is topped with Cheetos dust.

Burritos and fajitas can be customized with your choice of meat, and taco plates come three to an order—carne asada, carnitas, fish,

chicken tinga and quesabirria (beef tacos with a consumé broth for dipping). But that is far from all— enchilada plates feature seafood, machacha shredded beef tacos and chicken tacos, while combination plates let you mix and match two or three items, including tacos, enchiladas and pork tamales.

Specialty entrées include pork tamales, carne asada, carnitas, chile verde and Cordero al carbon (grilled lamb chops). Or go big with a molcajete for two, where you can choose from main ingredients such as chicken, steak, grilled shrimp, fried fish filet and lobster tail, with other items like queso, Spanish rice, beans, charred green onions, guacamole and roasted tomatoes.

Head in for brunch on Saturday or Sunday, and check out the carne asada fries, short rib nachos and the chili relleno and portobello burger with balsamic onions. Breakfast items like machaca chilaquiles, a chili verde skillet with two eggs, and huevos rancheros make sure you won’t leave hungry.

Canelo Álvarez puts his super-middleweight title on the line against Jaime Munguía

With the 25th anniversary of his company Golden Boy Promotions just around the corner, Oscar De La Hoya is preparing for two back-to-back championship boxing events. By the time this article is published, either WBC super lightweight belt holder Devin Haney or Ryan Garcia will have triumphed at their April 20 match, and De La Hoya will be days away from his fighter, Jaime Munguía, entering the ring on Cinco de Mayo weekend against Golden Boy alumni and undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Álvarez.

After Garcia’s wild prefight antics, the Álvarez-Munguía card will seem more like a classic gentlemen’s boxing match, with Munguía’s crowd-pleasing style complementing Álvarez’s counter-punching excellence. It’s also the first time Álvarez has taken on a fellow countryman as an opponent in years, making it a highlight in Golden Boy’s historical timeline.

“I’m extremely proud with what we have accomplished over the years,” De La Hoya

said to Las Vegas Magazine in an April interview. He credits veteran boxing promoter Bob Arum as an inspiration and architect of a blueprint for success. “Learning the ropes over the years through him when he promoted my career, I actually always took notes. Bob was the very best at doing it, and I’m hoping one day I can get inducted into the Hall of Fame as a promoter.”

While De La Hoya’s status as a Hall of Fame fighter is what attracts a fighter like Haney to accept a match with Golden Boy’s Garcia, his relationship with Álvarez became strained after the pandemic cut o professional boxing’s live event revenue stream and complicated promoters’ abilities to fulfill contractual obligations.

Álvarez may not break bread with De La Hoya in the future, but he will do business with Golden Boy, which recently relocated from Los Angeles. “The move to Las Vegas was necessary because I have big plans for boxing,” said De La Hoya. “I have big, big plans for Golden Boy in Las Vegas.”

A Munguía victory would be a first major milestone in Golden Boy’s new era. The 27-year-old from Tijuana has been working with legendary trainer Freddie Roach and is capable of gaining more than 15 pounds of rehydration mass after the prefight weigh-in. He has height advantage and slightly more reach, but he’ll be best served if he denies Álvarez chances to get in close for body shots and looks for opportunities to throw his wicked left hook.

A Munguía victory could herald the ushering in of a new generation of champions, with hype-savvy stars like Garcia blazing new promotional trails on social media.

“There’s a lot of good fighters coming up,” said De La Hoya. “YouTubers are shedding a bright light on the sport as well, like Jake Paul. Fighters like that who can bring attention to the sport and sort of make it bigger. It’s my job as a promoter to continue to build the next generation of fighters. It’s very important to me personally to make Las Vegas the Fight Capitol of the World again.”

Variety spectacular Absinthe continues to enthrall audiences 13 years later

bsinthe impresario The Gazillionaire is a man of many interests, and an equal number of disinterests. His tastes in talent sometimes lean towards the bizarre, the raunchy, the macabre. Other times he inadvertently introduces Las Vegas audiences to performers capable of phenomenal feats and superhuman ability. His latest find, record-holder Heather Holliday, puts a new twist on the sideshow tradition of sword swallowing, adding a new nail-biting element to what was already arguably the most dangerous show on the Strip.

Absinthe kickstarted a cabaret-circus production trend on the Strip featuring talent that stretched the boundaries of ability and imagination. Gaz booked roller skaters who spin like gyroscopes, strongmen who form themselves into human towers, a gorilla that

makes a startling transformation after dancing to Nine Inch Nails, incomparable Tap Twins Sean and John Scott and a pair of poetic body movement specialists who stretch the boundaries of cringe along with their spandex tights.

And now there is Holliday, who set world records last year for longest neon tube swallowed and largest curve in a sword swallowed while seated. The glow that the tube creates through the skin of her throat is a sight to behold, according to the Gazillionaire.

“There’s no trick to it,” he said in an interview with Las Vegas Magazine. “She does six swords at one time and a curved one. She told me one time, ‘If that tube breaks, I’ll die!’ … I pay extra insurance for the neon tube. I’m sure it’s costing me a bundle!”

It’s been 13 years since The Gazillionaire first snuck a mot-

ley crew of acrobats, dancers, daredevils, specialty acts and other assorted freaks past Caesars Palace security and set up his tentpole in front of the resort, an occasion recently celebrated with a Halloweenin-April party.

“It was something different, so that’s always good,” he said. Although “Gaz” declined to come in costume, his request that guests come suitably attired was heeded. “There were a lot of hot rabbits and hot ringmasters, foxes and other hot things. People aren’t very imaginative, and they like to show their breasts.”

The show took a turn later that night, he said, after his second-in-command, Wanda Widdles, was leveled by a

“weird concoction from some bitter scientist who had been in the audience 13 years ago. Then she bit me and we both mutated, and it turned into a bit of a mess.”

The recollection is an apt metaphor for the ever-mutating Absinthe. Gaz said he tried the show out for New York City crowds before coming to Vegas. They could not suspend disbelief and give themselves over to his concept of a dream fueled by a green goddess in a bottle in which wow-factor circus acts are interspersed with comedy bits and unexpected twists.

“We thought we’d bring it somewhere a little more fun, so we just came to Vegas and put up this stupid little tent,” said The Gazillionaire. “Caesars didn’t really want us to, but you know, we’re forceful and gave them some money.”

The adults-only ROUGE excels as a tribute to the human body

What show offers the perfect balance between sidesplitting comedy, impressive variety acts and human sexuality? The clear answer is none other than ROUGE, a high-energy co-ed revue featuring strong men, acrobats and so much more–all presented by the hilarious Dr. Libido and Nurse Naughty, who have a few tricks up their sleeves.

“We tried to take a genre that maybe, sometimes, is not treated or accepted in an artistic way and we wanted to … say that a sexy show can be artistic,” ROUGE director Hanoch Rosènn told Las Vegas Magazine in an exclusive interview. “I tried to do it like poetry; a (tribute) to the human body and to human love, and to treat it all with humor and with all kinds of

ideas and approach. The main idea is that it will touch the normal person whoever (they are). Whoever has this kind of fantasy or this kind of memory or something like that … I really tried to concentrate and to have it for everybody; for men, for women, for gays, for lesbians, for everybody. Everybody will come there and find something there that they can identify with or can laugh about.”

Because of the show’s co-ed nature (and the dynamics that come along with it), it would be hard to leave this show without seeing something you can identify with. There’s a wealth of representation in this show, all done beautifully. One moment you’ll be watching a pair of phenomenal aerialists swinging in sync across the stage, the next you’ll be giggling at a particularly cheeky French Revolution-themed number, then you’ll be rocking out with some crazy horses and their seductive handler.

“It didn’t matter to me so much about the nudity,” Rosènn said. “It is a topless show, that’s true, but for me the biggest compliment is when people say, ‘We didn’t feel that they were

The STRAT 18+. tickets.thestrat.com

topless.’ I wanted it to be like art.”

Each and every act in ROUGE features some supremely talented performers. When the trio of strongmen take the stage, you’ll have to pick your jaw up off the floor with each new pose they pull off. Fast-paced dance numbers provide plenty of energy in between slow, sultry acts, like a champagne glass performance set to Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman,” to ensure the show never drags.

Also bringing so much life to the show are the comedic co-hosts, played by Zion and Poppy Martyn, quipping with the crowd before pulling out an Icarian Games routine of their own—Zion uses his feet to toss Poppy into the air in a thrilling feat of strength, coordination and chemistry.

“I remember, when I was 17 years old and I went to Italy to see the statue of David … and we were standing in front of this statue (for), I think, like, 30 minutes without speaking because it’s so amazing to see this perfection … it’s unbelievable. The last thing you think about is that he’s naked. It’s art. So that’s what I was trying to do in the show,” Rosènn said.

Penn & Teller continue to create illusions year after year in their long-running show

It’s hard to remember a time when Penn Jillette and Teller weren’t inextricably linked to Las Vegas; they’re celebrating 30 years here this year, most of it at their current property. All told, Penn & Teller have been at it for nearly 50 years total, and a big part of their success is that they’ve never rested on laurels; never phoned it in (more on that later). And a recent show illustrated just how committed they are to that philosophy. As Jillette said at the outset, it doesn’t matter if the last show you attended was last year, last month or last week—you’re going to see something different.

Not that they haven’t kept in some quintessential moments over the years—first and foremost the show’s intro, in which pianist Mike Jones plays smooth, relaxing jazz while Jillette plays bass. (He departs shortly before showtime, with Jones joking to the audience that his bass player apparently has another job somewhere.)

But otherwise, Penn & Teller constantly keep their audiences guessing at what’s going to come next. At that show, they placed a large jar of jelly beans onstage (this one was new to me!), asking audience members by way of large signs to guess how many it 4+.

contained before the show started. The “winner” of this contest got the jar—and the privilege of doling out a few jelly beans to every single audience volunteer as they went back to their seat. It set a fun tone that kept everyone laughing throughout the night.

The changes continued (at least from my perspective). Yes, these magic men are always tweaking their show, always keeping audiences on their toes, always looking for that needle in a haystack (more on that one later as well).

If you attended this performance, you got to see:

• Egg bag, which is exactly what it sounds like, and about as basic as an illusion can be, although in the hands of Penn & Teller, the sleight-of-hand is mind-blowing. They make everything seem effortless, even though it’s the exact opposite;

• A routine involving a large drill and saw, a block of wood and a very nervous audience volunteer, for whom the duo create a magic trick. They then demonstrate to her how it works, and obtain her promise that she’ll perform it for others once she leaves the theater. (A show that gives you homework? Only in Vegas.)

• A trick with instructions in Spanish, leading to hilarious manifestations onstage that are not part of the act.

• And, as referenced earlier, Penn & Teller take on both the notion of “phoning it in” (with Jillette onstage as a suit hanging on a rack and a monitor above it with his face) and “a needle in a haystack” (where you’ll learn more about different types of needles than you ever cared to). Because there’s no notion that Penn & Teller are timid to attack. The stage is like a laboratory—which would make them mad scientists, and us their more-than-willing test subjects.

Scorpions will rock you like a hurricane at Planet Hollywood residency

Continuing its celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Love at First Sting album, Scorpions takes the stage for the fi nal dates of the band’s Planet Hollywood residency this week, and this is one show you’ve got to see.

The legendary German group plays every last song from Love at First Sting on a dynamic stage fi lled with lively backdrops and detailed designs that make for one high-powered spectacle. Lead singer Klaus Meine, guitarists Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs, bassist Pawel Maciwoda and drummer Mikkey Dee bring nothing but passion and excitement to the stage, with each member connecting with the audience and clearly having a ton of fun as they move from song to song.

Addressing the crowd at the beginning of the band’s opening night, Meine beamed with gratitude as he took the stage for the fi rst time since a complex spinal surgery that led to the cancellation of the group’s gig at the Vive Latino Festival in Mexico City. “It’s been a rough ride for me, but (I’m) still standing,” the vocalist said.

The band sounded just as crisp for that performance as they did 40 years ago as they play hits like “I’m Leaving You,” “Big City Nights” and “The Zoo.” The crowd sung along to rock ballad “Wind of Change” and, of course, the whole room went wild for the fi nal song, “Rock You Like a Hurricane.” In a particularly touching moment, the band honored late drummer

James Kottak by dedicating “Send Me an Angel” to him after Meine shared some heartfelt words about the percussionist who played with the band from 1996 to 2016.

Dee, who took over the drum kit after Kottak’s tenure ended, breathes so much life into the set from the moment he takes the stage to the moment he leaves, even playing a minutes-long drum solo that will surely captivate you as it did the opening-night audience. His pounding percussion could easily entertain a crowd for hours on its own, but when combined with the talents of his bandmates, the powerful sounds of Scorpions ignite so much excitement that it would be hard to not be fully entranced by the performance.

Scorpions is joined by Ugly Kid Joe for this set of Vegas shows, and the California hard rock band opened the fi rst show with a lively set of its own. Playing songs like “Milkman’s Son,” “Everything About You” and even a cover of Harry Chapin’s “Cat’s in the Cradle,” the group is the perfect warm-up for Scorpions. Lead singer Whitfield Crane brings his likable personality and rich vocals to the stage.

And make sure you take the time to look around the stage throughout the show; you’ll notice more and more that makes this concert special.

The attention to detail in the backdrops, the lighting and even the Vegas-themed guitars shows just how well these experienced performers can put on a show.
