Thank You, AGT

When America’s Got Talent premiered in 2006, I was not immediately a viewer. But it’s now essential viewing for me as both a Las Vegas resident and editor of Las Vegas Magazine, as the show has become basically a preview of the Las Vegas Strip headliners of tomorrow. The list of acts that now enjoy success on the Strip thanks to AGT is almost too large to all list here, and it promises to only grow, as the show’s grand prize is always a headlining show here—even though a lot of the current Strip draws didn’t even win their seasons!

First and foremost on that list is Jabbawockeez, a dance troupe celebrating its 21st year of existence and many years of success in Las Vegas at a variety of properties, including its current home at MGM Grand. The act performed on AGT in 2007 and didn’t make it far, but is now regarded as one of the show’s distinguished alums (“Master Class,” p. 34).

However, some acts are just unbeatable. Ask Shin Lim, a closeup magician who not only won his AGT season but AGT: The Champions, and who currently has one of the hottest shows in town at The Mirage (“Follow Him Closely,” p. 36 ).

For a mix of both winners and runners-up, head straight to Luxor for America’s Got Talent Presents SUPERSTARS Live, a collection of some of the show’s best acts over the years (“Ever-Changing Fun,” p. 38).

If, in the course of seeing all these shows, you get a bit thirsty, we’ve got plenty of great bars lined up for you, from Glass Bar at Planet Hollywood (“Cocktails? Any Time is the Right Time,” p. 14) and Alle Lounge on 66 at Resorts World (“Tempting Delights,” p. 21) to Carousel Bar at Plaza (“All-Around Exciting,” p. 24).

Vegas defi nitely has talent. Enjoy!

Rocking Good Time

Attraction features some of music’s most influential icons

For decades, Madame Tussauds has been famous worldwide for its collection of the most famous people on the planet. And at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas, the recent focus has been squarely on some of the most influential musicians of our generation:

• J Balvin (pictured), the attraction’s newest figure, wears a floral three-piece suit (a perfect re-creation of his 2021 Moschino Met Gala ensemble) and sports a bleach-blond buzz cut.

• Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker’s figure has the distinction of being the most tattooed wax likeness in Madame Tussauds’ history—more than 100. In addition, the all-black wardrobe was supplied by Barker himself, from the leather jacket to the boots. It took nine weeks to stencil and color the figure’s head and seven weeks for the body. But the result? A true work of art, just like the man himself.

• Rapper Jack Harlow’s figure is decked out in the custom-designed suit he wore in his music video for “Churchill Downs (feat. Drake).” Twenty studio artists pitched in on different parts of the figure, which took about six months from start to finish.

• Three-time Grammy winner Megan Thee Stallion actually had two figures created (the other one is in the New York location), and her Las Vegas likeness

features a newsprint catsuit and matching cowboy hat with fingerless gloves (the outfit was inspired by a photo shoot to promote her album Good News). Twenty artists worked six months to create the figures, capturing more than 200 measurements and matching colors for her eyes, hair and skin.

• Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny’s figure is posed in front of a purple semi decked out with flames (inspired not only for the cover for El Último Tour Del Mundo, but by his outfit, hair and jewelry from the 2021 American Music Awards). Bad Bunny has other figures on display in New York and Orlando, Fla.

• Singer, rapper and flutist Lizzo’s figure replicates her appearance at the 2020 Grammys—a white Versace floor-length gown accented by sparkling detailing, a faux fur shawl and Stuart Weitzman strappy heels.

• Hip-hop legend Missy Elliott’s figure replicates the outfit she wore to the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. A fan of her groundbreaking album Supa Dupa Fly helped Elliott hand-embellish the figure’s glossy tracksuit, and Elliott donated a pair of Versace kicks. Twenty artists worked six months to get every detail just right. –Ken Miller

Cocktails? Any Time Is the Right Time

New bar open around the clock for fun or relaxation

Day or night, when the mood strikes and you want to hang in comfortable yet chic surroundings, there’s a new hot spot to go to: Glass Bar at Planet Hollywood. In the center of the casino action, but with a semi-private design that gives guests the feeling of being enveloped in luxury, the newly opened bar gets big props for creating a space perfect for cocktails and conversation. Whether you are wanting to do some pregaming before a concert at the nearby Bakkt Theater or need a cocktail break after a long shopping trip through Miracle Mile Shops or just want to get in some nightlife fun but don’t want to pay a cover or wait in those long nightclub lines, Glass Bar is a great option. The lounge offers tons of comfy seating, and if your party wants a little privacy, there are plenty of nooks with sofas and tables—or if you’re feeling more social, the circular bar area puts you right in the action with easy access to bartenders and bar-top gaming. The décor is truly stunning, with beautiful, mirrored columns, crystal prisms that catch the lights and polished chrome brass accents. Not to be missed at Glass Bar, though, is its amazing cocktail menu—tons of craft cocktail options

in addition to bottled beers and wines by the glass.

Start with the star of the show, the Fruit & Pebble, inspired by Fruity Pebbles cereal and featuring Diplomático Planas rum, Taylor Fladgate tawny port, a specially made Fruity Pebbles syrup and lime juice, with a dusting of crushed Fruity Pebbles and edible flowers along the rim. Another highlight is the Casino Carnival with Absolut Wild Berri vodka, La Marca Prosecco, passion fruit purée, simple syrup and lime juice. Others include the Express Yourself, with Wheatley vodka, Kahlua, simple syrup and cold brew, and the refreshing Maui Mojito with Malibu rum, lemon and mint verbena syrup, lime juice, soda and fresh mint.

Fabulous after-dinner drinks or late-night choices include the Brown Butter Derby with Taffer’s Browned Butter Bourbon, grapefruit and hot honey cordial and a dash of Angostura bitters, and the 4 AM Club with Flecha Azul blanco tequila, Chacho jalapeño aguardiente, prickly pear syrup, Luxardo Maraschino liqueur and lime juice. –Kiko Miyasato

The spritz, and its children, are stars of a monthslong festival

If you’re a fan of the classic Aperol spritz, wait until you see what Eataly Las Vegas has in store for you this spring and summer. A form of the spritz first came into being in the 1800s, evolving until it reached today’s form, with an amaro, sparkling white wine and soda water. But by adjusting for other spirits, there’s incredible flexibility in flavors, which is what you’ll see in the light beverages in Eataly during the Spritz Life celebration.

At La Pizza & La Pasta, sit on the outdoor patio and sip such goodies as the Pompello, with Casamigos blanco, ruby grapefruit syrup, Fever-Tree grapefruit soda, lemon and prosecco. Toscana Ristorante & Bar joins Remy VSOP, Pallini limoncello, Lambrusco (a sparkling red wine) and lemon in the Monarca, and Sipsmith Strawberry Smash gin, vermouth, Fever-Tree elderflower tonic and Sparkling Rosato in the Donna (pictured), while at the Gran Caffé Milano Bar, the Botanico features The Botanist gin, Ramazzotti Rosato, grapefruit juice and Fever-Tree cucumber tonic. L’Aperitivo Bar in the Cucina del Mercato mixes up the Melone, featuring Grey Goose Essences Watermelon & Basil, moscato d’Asti, watermelon juice and lime. (L’Aperitivo Bar has a great patio nearby.) Each venue also offers nonalcoholic spritzes.

To get the fun in gear, TikTok creator Chris Leavitt (@notjustabartender) offers an interactive class on April 25, where participants create three of the special spritzes from the Spritz Life menus. Tickets are $95 per person. –Nina King Park MGM. 702.730.7010

Everything You Need—and Want

Spend your day in this multifaceted complex

If your mission while in Las Vegas is to go on a shopping expedition, might we highly suggest checking out Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood? This shopping mecca has anything and everything you could want for fashion, accessories, gifts, skincare and toys as well as art, sports memorabilia, tattoos and unique experiences like the new Lost City Show

Along with a recent renovation of the complex, making for a more upscale, modern vibe, Miracle Mile Shops installed the free Lost City Show, playing every hour on the hour from 10 a.m.-11 p.m. The 3D-projection video show, near V Theater, is a fun and visually exciting experience, with more than three dozen projectors making the space come to life.

The show is based on Earth’s elements—you’ll watch fire and lava light up the buildings, water rush down the walls, ice freeze onto surfaces, and flowers and grass grow under the sun. The sounds of thunder, rain and nature help bring the surreal effects to life and change the stone facades of V Theater into a living, breathing cityscape.

After you enjoy the spectacle, you’ve got to stop for a bite to eat. Food and beverage abound with tons of quick-serve eateries and sit-down restaurants like Cabo Wabo Cantina, Flights, Nacho Daddy and Blondies (a perfect spot for some beer pong!).

Make sure to peruse the retail offerings, an impressive lineup of stores that house everything from accessories, shoes, and health and beauty products to fine art and collectibles, gifts, home décor, and a host of women’s and men’s fashions. If you can’t find a complete outfit at Miracle Mile Shops, you can’t find one anywhere on the Las Vegas Strip—choose from casual looks from top spots like H&M, Lucky Brand and Marshall Rousso to fashion-forward brands like Original Penguin, GUESS, White House | Black Market, U.S. Polo Assn. and Desigual. –Las Vegas Magazine Staff

A Magical Experience

Find yourself among the flowers for tea, brunch and dinner

There are many beautiful restaurants in Las Vegas with exquisite décor, but there are few that seat you inside a major attraction. The Garden Table at Bellagio does exactly that inside the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, and it is a coveted reservation. This spectacular culinary experience is constructed with a theme matching the Conservatory’s latest installation.

This spring’s Tea and Tulips exhibit is especially fabulous, and a Victorian-style greenhouse houses The Garden Table. In keeping with that, The Garden Table has introduced an afternoon tea experience, with several varieties from Darjeeling to green available to sip from delicate cups. Fancy tea sandwiches, featuring English cucumber, jamón Ibérico and egg salad, plus truffle gougères, a stuffed pastry puff. And petite desserts are sure to be a hit with all. Plus, you can also get caviar service for the more sophisticated palate.

But The Garden Table also serves brunch from Sadelle’s, with items like a house-cured salmon tower with caviar and bagels, dessert and select beverages; and dinner from Michael Mina (on select nights), with slow-cooked eggs with Tsar Imperial Daurenki caviar and filet mignon, if that suits you better.

Each experience is only available for two to three seatings per day depending on day of the week, so get your reservations quick! –Nina King

All-Around Exciting

Downtown hot spot provides plenty of great drinks and people-watching, too

The Carousel Bar at Plaza is not just a spot for some great drinks—it’s a fun destination to gather with friends, enjoy some of the best people watching, soak in some history and take those awesome, only-in-Vegas snapshots.

“The bar is a true destination,” said Courtney Allen, director of food

and beverage at Plaza. The outdoor Carousel Bar sits right along Main Street, downtown, across from the famed Fremont Street Experience and right in front of the property’s front doors where the porte-cochere used to be. The design is based off the original Carousel Bar in New Orleans, and while

this one doesn’t slowly move in a circle, the horses do move up and down the poles—just like on a real carousel!

Roomy booths and bar seating is open for everyone 21 and over. Settle in for some “very fun, vibrant, Instagrammable cocktails,” said Allen.

Start with a refreshing sip and Car-

There’s a secret menu! Try and find the QR code on the bar’s menu and scan it for a special list of rotating cocktails.

ousel’s spin on a tiki cocktail, the Soggy & Sandy, a mix of Jameson Orange, crème de banane, coconut cream, pineapple, orange, lime and mint. The cocktail comes in several versions of a tiki mug, and each one can be purchased for an extra cost.

For a pick-me-up-sip, try the Caffeine Drip, featuring cold brew mixed with Absolut Vanilia vodka, Briottet liqueur and crème de banane. Who likes spicy? The One Hot Mama is sure to test taste limits with a blend of Mi Campo blanco tequila, 21 Seeds cucumber jalapeño tequila, Chacho jalapeño aquardiente, Mr. Q cucumber sparkling soda, cucumber and Tajín.

On the menu since Carousel Bar opened last year is the popular Money in the Bank, made with Patron tequila, Aperol, pineapple, lime and Mike’s Hot Honey syrup for a bit of a bite with each sip. The $100 bill attached is edible!

A star specialty cocktail, perfect for posing with, is the Carousel Grand Pineapple, served in a carved-out pine-

apple and made with Captain Morgan spiced rum, Grand Marnier and piña colada mix.

In addition to the specialty cocktails, Allen said, “Our beer menu is locally driven; all of our canned beers are from local breweries, and we’re proud of that.” Guests can try Vegas breweries like 7Five Brewing, Bad Beat and Able Baker. “We also have a good selection of shareable cocktails for larger groups of people, they serve about four,” she said. A great shareable option is the Take Flight, a Patron margarita flight with four flavors including traditional, mango, strawberry and passion fruit.

Don’t miss the front of Carousel Bar; facing Fremont Street Experience is the bar’s specially made neon sign—a 14-foot showgirl that fans of the Plaza have named Ginger, after the character in the movie Casino. “Ginger welcomes you with open arms to the Carousel Bar,” Allen said. –Kiko Miyasato

This general manager has the best gig around Mike Jones

Satisfaction with one’s job is a luxury many don’t have; Mike Jones, general manager for Emeril Lagasse’s Delmonico Steakhouse, is not one of those people. “When I’m done here at this restaurant, it’s not going to be to go to another restaurant—this is it for me,” says the California native. “This is the best company to work for. I love it. It’s a great industry; it’s been good to me.”

Jones started in the industry in the back of the house in the kitchen. He

graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Las Vegas and had planned on becoming a chef, but after some time spent in the front of house, he realized management was more his style. Jones has managed restaurants on and off the Strip for years, joining Delmonico Steakhouse in 2018. In the ensuing years, he also managed Lagasse’s other Las Vegas Strip restaurant at MGM Grand before rejoining Delmonico Steakhouse in January.

For the longest time, Wolfgang Puck’s Lupo held court in Mandalay Bay, serving a casual Italian menu that visitors and locals returned for again and again. It was rather sad to see the space dark and Lupo closed. But it was very exciting when Caramá opened its doors in the same space with an inviting, elegant new mien.

Inside, you’ll find a space and menu inspired by Puck’s memories of his mother, with new dishes and twists on signature Puck items.

“My mother was a chef, and living so close to the Italian border, she was influenced by the culture and food of Northern Italy. Our meals were always simple, and fresh, right from

the garden,” said Puck in a recent press statement.

The décor here is inspired by Italy, as are many of the restaurants in the Puck empire, and Milan in particular, with tile, marble chandeliers and brass light fixtures. The main bar is huge, with colorful floral wallpaper and a large, vintage-style mirror behind. A plethora of tables ensures a lively atmosphere while dining.

Wolfgang Puck’s Caramá brings upscale cuisine to an elegant environment

A center area is dominated by a salumeria, where a glass case displays cured meats and cheese, and a bar invites you to sit down for a beverage (perhaps an aperitivo during cocktail hour, offered from 3-5 p.m. daily).

The salumeria serves up a variety of platters to snack on or start your meal with, and there’s even a veggie platter.

Starters here include the prime beef carpaccio, tuna tartare and

about the roasted pork belly until well after dessert. Costoletta d’agnello alla griglia (lamb chops) come several to an order, and you’ll need to ward off those at the table who insist on sharing after the starters have been demolished. If you do like sharing, you’ll find the bistecca alla Fiorentina, a 32-ounce porterhouse, is perfect. Creamy polenta and wood-roasted carrots are good sides to indulge in.

Bagna Cauda del Contadino, a garlic and anchovy dip that is a delicacy for some (served with farmer’s market veggies for that dipping). A signature item on any Puck menu is pizza and, in this restaurant, you’ll find a pizza oven slightly tucked away, issuing forth goodies like classic margherita, pizza ai fiori di zucca (with scamorza and squash blossoms), and pizza alla diavola, with spicy salume and caramelized onions.

Pastas include lasagne al forno, an oven-baked dish layering the pasta and a beef Bolognese sauce; chitarra al nero con granchio, squid ink chitarra pasta with crab, cherry tomatoes and peppers; and linguine with Manila

clams. Risotto all’aragosta (lobster risotto) is constructed with Maine lobster and tomatoes, while a ricotta gnocchi features handmade pillows with wild mushrooms and garlic.

For your entrée, choose the porchetta Romana, and you may be raving

Lemon cake is a specialty in Amalfi, and at Caramá, the Illusione del Limone takes that dish and makes it even better. From a selection of lemons, choose one, and wait as it’s sliced open to reveal a center of lemon curd and soft cake. This is one lemon that won’t make you pucker—just smile.

Smokey Robinson has a hold on crowds more than six decades into his career

If there was one lyric placed in a time capsule for future generations to stumble upon and discover everything pop music was capable of in the second half of the 20th Century, Smokey Robinson might be its author.

Exhibit A: “If you feel like giving me/ A lifetime of devotion/ I second that emotion.” What more needs to be said about love in a song?

That’s just the tip of the iceberg of the creative force who shaped the way music would be composed, recorded and listened to. Robinson, 84, was a type-A Detroit schoolkid with a penchant for writing lyrics before his talent and expressive tenor were recognized by Motown founder Berry Gordy. He wrote hits for other artists, from “My Guy” by Mary Wells to “My Girl” by the Temptations, while performing with The Miracles.

That group featured his future wife Claudette when it had its breakthrough No. 1 single in 1960 with

“Shop Around.” Her voice can be heard prominently in songs such as 1962’s “You Really Got a Hold on Me,” but she retired from touring after both Robinsons suffered health issues and alternated leading the band on the road for a time. The Miracles appeared as an all-male quartet with deft dance moves in most of their ’60s television appearances, changing their name to Smokey Robinson and The Miracles in 1965.

Robinson went solo in the ’70s, with 1975 album A Quiet Storm inspiring a smooth R&B radio format that grew in the 1980s. He didn’t have a major hit after leaving The Miracles until 1979’s “Cruisin’” set the stage for more visibility the following decade. Robinson scored big with 1981’s “Being with You” and enjoyed huge success with 1987’s One Heartbeat album. The title cut and “Just to See Her” became Top 10 singles.

At the same time he was asserting himself as a major adult contemporary figure, interest in The Miracles was being revived through soundtracks to films such as The Big

Chill and Platoon. New wave bands such ABC and Japan paid homage to Robinson with a tribute song (“When Smokey Sings”) and cover (“I Second That Emotion”), respectively.

The latter just scratches the surface of countless Smokey Robinson covers. The Beatles recorded “You Really Got a Hold on Me” for their second album. Linda Ronstadt killed on her versions of “Ooh Baby Baby” and “Tracks of My Tears” in the ’70s. The Rolling Stones released a live version of “Going to a Go-Go” as a single and video in the ’80s.

Robinson’s favorite cover is jazz singer’s Nnenna Freelon’s torchy 2022 “Tears of a Clown,” which slows down the upbeat tempo and adds violin as a counterpart to Freelon’s vocal. To paraphrase what Daryl Hall told him upon hearing this, once the artist shares a song, it belongs to everybody.

Robinson, who released slyly titled album Gasms last year, is happy to share them with audiences directly.

It’s been 21 years since Strip-headlining dance crew Jabbawockeez first formed in San Francisco. Now numbering more than a dozen dancers with nine on stage six nights weekly at their eponymous theater inside MGM Grand, Jabbawockeez present a show so fresh and so clean that every return visit feels new. That could be due to seeing Timeless, their third Vegas production, with di erent audiences each time. Jabbawockeez draws some of the most enthusiastic spectators that attend any production on the Strip, with hip-hop and body rock fans making a pilgrimage to a veritable house of worship. The first-timers can be identified by

how excited they are to hear OutKast emanating from the speakers as B-boys wearing white masks and matching bucket hats take the stage and commence creating choreographic miracles.

Street Wear ’80s and Soul Train ’70s in hilarious outfits and wigs.

The expert comedic acting talent on display may be unexpected, but it’s crucial to the success of the stage show. Sometimes it’s drawn on to interpret narration, sometimes to act out songs. It’s in full e ect during audience participation segments that include karaoke and possibly coaxing a front-row onlooker into coming

Timeless has a loose storyline of our breakdancing heroes traveling the universe in search of the “ultimate playlist,” which the soundtrack to the show is tantamount to. They travel back in time through eras that influenced them, physically interpreting the Busta Rhymes and Nirvana ’90s, Vision

34 | 4.21.24 Las Vegas Magazine

Jabbawockeez reach maturity with Timeless dance moves and classic grooves

onstage. It also is the culmination of 21 years of cultivation.

Founders such as Joe Larot, Kevin “KB” Brewer and Gary Kendell are well known among longtime fans as Jabbawockeez prime movers, with Kendell’s unexpected passing from pneumonia and meningitis the year before Jabbawockeez won the first season of America’s Best Dance Crew in 2008 creating a void.

“Gary was, he was like a mentor for all of us in the style that we do in our crew,” says the narrator of the JBWKZ the Legacy: ’03 to Infinity video on the Jabbawockeez's YouTube channel. “He’s the reason for the style that we have. He’s like the Yoda of our crew pretty much. He’s our brother. We love him very much, very dearly.”

Notice the several references to Kendell in the present tense. His spirit is very much alive onstage, paid

tribute to with love at every performance. The anonymity of the masks makes it easy to imagine him being up there among his disciples, who are now mentors to a new generation of Jabbawockeez and inspirations to fans who discovered them after ABDC

Now TikTok is where fans of street dance go to learn new steps, except now they can record and upload their own emulations. Timeless is now more than a can’t-miss residency on the south end of the Strip. It’s a master class in movement that’s inspiring for dancers and nondancers alike, with the added value of being able to buy a Jabbawockeez mask.

Shin Lim commands

audiences like no other magician on the Strip

Shin Lim is surely one of the United States Playing Card Company’s most favored customers. The close-magic master has small, sealed packets with four Bicycle brand cards affixed to every seat at his Limitless residency inside the Mirage Theatre. Each packet is printed with the instructions

“PLEASE DO NOT OPEN UNTIL

SHIN LIM TELLS YOU.”

Tempting as it is, and it can’t be stressed enough, do not open the package until Shim Lin tells you.

the romantic ambience of Sting’s 1993 song “Shape of My Heart,” which serves as the theme to an early show segment of four-suited sleight-of-hand.

A two-time winner of America’s Got Talent, Lim has an approach to card manipulation that almost looks like real-time, real-life video editing. With his sleeves well clear of his wrists, Lim make cards appear and disappear with a hyperkinetic flourish. It’s a skill not unique to Lim but perhaps affected by 10,000 hours

He will tell you after his colleague, Colin Cloud, appears onstage and demonstrates his mastery of the art of mentalism for the first of several times. He’s 100 percent accurate at guessing birthdays during a recent show and draws on portrait-making skills to illustrate thoughts of audience members before they think them.

Brash, extroverted and hilarious, Cloud’s stage style both complements and contrasts with Lim’s. Both have a predilection for slim tailoring, but Lim is more ethereal and enigmatic than his performing partner. His aura is enhanced by

of piano practice that resulted in carpal-tunnel syndrome.

Doctor-ordered rest gave Lim a chance to focus on cardistry. Magic began to pull ahead of becoming a concert pianist as a life goal, although the piano would eventu-

ally play a part in his act physically as well as narratively. A runner-up placing at a competition held by the Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiques only fueled Lim’s ambitions. He competed again and placed first.

Now he may have the fastest hands of any magician on the Strip. Close magic is his specialty. Lim is of a generation that grew up with the technology available to him. Rather than experiment with how to make close magic work on massive monitors, he seems to have conceived of his tricks with large-scale video viewing in mind.

His approach works seamlessly with biographical elements and creates a cohesive thread throughout the show. Alternating stage-time with wisecracking Cloud keeps the proceedings moving at a brisk pace. The two will cross paths by the conclusion in an unpredictable way but work mainly with audience members for the duration of the show

As good as Cloud is, no one has figured out how to involve the entire audience in participating the way Lim does with the sealed packet trick. Still, it can’t be stressed enough: Do not open the packet until Shin Lim tells you.

Just like the show it’s based on, America’s Got Talent Presents SUPERSTARS Live is endlessly entertaining

If America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League, in which all the judges of the hit reality competition pick their “dream teams” of contestants from seasons past, has proven anything, it’s this: The show is an absolute treasure trove of entertainment, one

38 | 4.21.24 Las Vegas Magazine
Herwan Legaillard

from which vast deposits of talent can be mined for years to come

And America’s Got Talent Presents SUPERSTARS Live takes full advantage of that lode, changing its lineup to reflect the amazing variety over the show’s 18 seasons. Recent additions are some of the most exciting in recent memory, performers with a world-class skill set who could easily command shows of their own.

He never says a word, never changes his stoic facial expression, never shows an ounce of emotion. But Aaron

Crow (season 13) quickly shows he doesn’t need words to bring an audience to its feet—or to its knees. His specialty is death-defying acts, but with a significant twist: It’s often his audience volunteers whose safety we fear for. Whether he’s wielding a bow and arrow, nunchucks, knife or sword, Crow is absolutely magnetic in his stage presence, and his act can best be described as mentalism mixed with danger and, for lack of a better word, magic. He’s one of the few acts to elicit a genuine sense of fear from Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Mel B and Heidi Klum—no small feat at all.

There have been amazing sword-swallowing acts on AGT, and there have been even more amazing aerial acts. But before Herwan Legaillard (season 18), no performer had done them simultaneously. And Legaillard does both so e ortlessly, it’s easy to forget while watching him how frigging hard both are to master. (Oh, and he’s also a master at hand balancing!) But what really puts his act over the top is his presence. The man has a hypnotic stare and devilish good looks. He’s a born showman, and promises to be a huge draw while he’s with the show.

Light Balance

When Pandersonium (season 18) first appeared on AGT, the judges and the audience were a bit dumbfounded. Here were four puppets, all singing a very bland version of Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” Suddenly, a Simon Cowell puppet appeared (the act is called Puppet Simon & The Cowbelles), immediately trashing their act in a very meta moment and taking it over, launching into a great rendition of Queen’s “Someone To Love.” The Cowell impersonation, combined with its performer’s amazing vocals, won the crowd—and the judges—over. And they’ll do the same to you.

Just like the show itself, SUPERSTARS promises plenty of surprises throughout the year. You might get the chance to see:

• Lavender Darcangelo (season 18), whose story of living with both blindness and autism was a ecting enough, but when she opened her mouth to sing “Out Here On My Own,” a star was born. She did not win her season, but her place among the AGT greats is all but assured.

• Brian Justin Crum (season 11), who came so close to winning his season

with one of the most powerful singing voices the show has ever seen.

And if you’ve seen the show recently, you’ll be happy to know that some of the show’s fan favorites are still firmly in place, including:

• Kodi Lee (season 14), a brilliant singer and pianist who won his season handily and continues to be a focal point of the production.

• Human Fountains (season 13), a trio of men who specialize in spitting water (and other fluids) into the air in a choreographed, hilarious routine

40 | 4.21.24 Las Vegas Magazine
Kodi Lee

that will either have you in stitches or slightly grossed out. Either way, this is unforgettable stu .

• Mervant Vera (season 17), a magician and rapper who combines both in an act that changes with each and every audience.

• The Pack Drumline (season 17), a troupe that will get your body moving with propulsive drum beats and impeccably timed choreography.

• Light Balance, a dance troupe that combines state-of-the-art technology to create some mind-blowing illusions.

• The Silhouettes, a troupe that performs behind a backlit screen to create shapes, telling emotional stories that may have you tearing up a bit.

And tying all this together are your emcees, alternating between stand-up comedians Mike E. Winfield (a Golden Buzzer recipient) and Jordan Conley (both from season 17), who made it to the semifinals. Come and join the ever-changing fun!
