Raise a Glass

This is a special week for Las Vegas Magazine. We are dedicating this entire issue to something our city does arguably better than any other: Drinks! From cocktails and mocktails to co ee- and teabased concoctions, we’ve got it all in the following pages. (The theme feels particularly fitting this week, with both the Bar & Restaurant Expo at the Las Vegas Convention Center from March 18-20 and National Cocktail Day on March 24.)

• Our entertainment scene is one of the most vibrant you’ll fi nd anywhere, and performers at Strip hotels all have one thing in common: Their host properties all contain amazing places to get cocktails. Associate editor Kiko Miyasato asked some of our most distinct acts to pose with a drink at venues within their respective resorts, and let’s just say the results are beyond entertaining (“Toasts of the Town,” p. 34).

• Looking for some creations that will get you some likes on Instagram? Managing editor Nina King has collected some of the Strip’s most overthe-top libations (“The Wild Bunch,” p. 42).

• As part of our series “What’s Your Sign?” (p. 52), editorial assistant Em Jurbala pairs your zodiac symbol with the perfect mocktail.

• Remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books you enjoyed as a kid? Now the same formula gets applied to a drinking adventure, courtesy of Em Jurbala (“Where the Day Takes You,” p. 40).

• Not sure what to order? Let our sta be your guide (“Trust the Experts,” p. 26 ).

We’ll also show you some of the most expensive concoctions on the Strip, introduce you to a great tiki bar, direct you to the best places to imbibe during March Madness, help you discover Lisa Vanderpump’s must-visit venues, turn the spotlight on a flair bartender, and much, much more. So raise a glass this week! You’ve earned it.

Rewriting the Rules

Restaurant and bar empire has fans waiting in line for a cocktail adventure unlike any other

Lines of up to 20 people form in front of Vanderpump à Paris and Vanderpump Cocktail Garden before either open for business—even on weekdays! The Las Vegas jewels in the crown of the Vanderpump restaurant and bar empire generate an excitement that begins before the first cocktails are ordered. Dramatic interior designs prime patrons for libation sensations creatively crafted and presented with panache.

This is due in no small part to expert, personable bartenders such as Jenelle, who spent months training to perfect execution of the Vanderpump à Paris cocktail collection at Paris Las Vegas. A three-course drink experience drawn from a newspaper-themed menu can begin with a citrusy Tarte Aux Pommes, a twist on the Old-Fashioned made with apple butter and Angostura and orange bitters.

The main course would have to be Louvre at First Sight, its foundation of Gracias a Dios mezcal mixed with lemon jalapeño honey and served beneath a smoke-filled transparent pyramid. It’s a spicy concoction that raises expectations for future agave-based drinks. Follow that up with an espresso martini made with Vanderpump Vodka and Jenelle’s work is complete.

At Caesars Palace, Johann has the vodka recipes muscle-memorized, and a story or two about spirits such as the Chacho jalapeño aguardiente that goes into Vanderpump Cocktail Garden’s popular Checkmate B*tch. Stoli Hot, fresh pineapple and grapefruit liqueur are topped with pink peppercorns for a sense-stimulating escapade meant to be savored.

Please Her, Caesar! may be the most visually tantalizing selection, with rosé champagne, Vanderpump Vodka and blackberry creating a two-toned flute filler with a frothy head. But it’s not likely that a delicious option that tastes anything like Matcha Matcha Man will be encountered elsewhere. Ordering the mix of Vanderpump Vodka and matcha is de rigueur for having a very Vanderpump cocktail adventure. –Matt Kelemen

Brackets and Booze

Signature drinks score during March Madness

The swirl of excitement generated by the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament absorbs all focus from fans. From teams to follow and viewing

venues to point spreads and wagers, there are decisions to be made that use up enough concentration to make ordering food and drinks effortful.

Choosing venues and preplanning with menus can go a long way in reserving cerebral energy for games.

The SuperBook is a no-brainer choice for habitués of Westgate Las Vegas. The sprawling, state-of-the art sports book with a 20-foot-high video wall becomes Hoops Central Thursday through Saturday, offering options for guest such as premium seating,

16 | 3.17.24 Las Vegas Magazine

VIP high top tables, plush booths and recliner seats. Certain chairs in the poker room have good sightlines too, but all options have access to VIP bottle service and an impressive selection of draft beers.

Golden Circle Sports Book at Treasure Island has a lower ceiling for a more intimate feeling but similar square footage that accommodates

a variety of party sizes and desires. Comfort food is complemented by beer buckets, You-Call-It cocktails and the Grid Iron Margarita featuring Patrón Silver and Patrón Orange.

Orange dominates the color palette at Carousel Bar in front of the main entrance at the downtown Plaza in Downtown Las Vegas. Built beneath the iconic canopy of the property’s

porte-cochère, the bar offers outdoor atmosphere and a streetside bar where specialty cocktails such as Money in the Bank (Patrón and hot honey) and Jameson-based Soggy and Sandy can be ordered in take-along cups.

Close by is Stadium Swim at Circa Resort & Casino, also outdoors but with pools, daybeds, cabanas and owners’ suites facing the 140-by-40-foot giant screen. Specialty drinks are seasonal, but it’s a good bet that vodka-forward Uncle Tito and cucumber-flavored Effen Spa can be ordered year-round. For a good, tall mai tai and indooroutdoor options, Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Cantina is a choice destination in the middle of South Strip action at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. The second-level bar will likely be one of the most raucous scenes on Las Vegas Boulevard if enough Cabo Wabo tequila is served.

The Still at The Mirage is allindoors for its Buckets and Brews days. The “ultimate man cave” provides 8,000 square feet and 50 craft beers for sports junkies. Specialty drinks include cucumber mint and mango martinis, the spicy Golden Boy tequila cocktail, gin-based Aviation and intriguingly titled Power Play Paloma, featuring Patron Silver and St-Germain mixed with lime, strawberry and grapefruit flavors.

For one of the less frenetic March Madness experiences in Vegas, head south of the Strip to Silverton Casino Lodge, where bracket action can be taken in at Shady Grove Lounge. Twelve screens show the games, while a repurposed Airstream houses minibowling, and an indoor North American Aspen tree helps set the relaxed mood. This might be the place to focus on brews, as Shady Tree proudly serves Pacifico Beer by the pint. It may, in fact, be one of the only Vegas venues where a beer can be considered the house specialty drink. –Matt Kelemen

Liquid Opulence

Experience some of the Strip’s most expensive cocktails

Beautiful and rare. Those are just a couple of the descriptors of the vintage cocktails at The Vault at Bellagio. Here’s two more: impressive and expensive. Let’s concentrate on that last word, shall we? Since this is Las Vegas, it’s part of the city’s identity to offer visitors a chance to spend some serious dough for singular experiences, and The Vault is one such place to do so. On the menu, guests will come across some of the most expensive cocktails on the Strip, each one starting around $125. However, you won’t see a price listed; instead, you’ll see an “MP” for market price—a kitschy way of saying, “If you have to ask ...”

What makes the vintage cocktails so pricey? “We label vintage cocktails as market price because we are sourcing our spirits from former years,” says Craig Schoettler, executive director of Bellagio. “Once a spirit is gone, we find another product from history. For example, we could serve Bacardi from the ’30s this week, then the next could be Bacardi from the ’40s or ’60s.”

These cocktails use everything from rum and gin to bourbon and cognac, like the Captain’s Sidecar, pictured, mixed with a highly coveted fine champagne cognac and shaken together with Cointreau, fresh lemon juice and a cane sugar rim.

“The Vault at Bellagio is a discreet cocktail club that offers access to highly sought-after creations from distillers, vintners and artists from around the world,” Schoettler says. “Guests have the rare opportunity to ‘drink history’ by sampling 20th century spirits from a curated vintage cocktail list.”

Versatile Libations

Coffee and tea make for some wonderful concoctions

Regardless of where you are from or how old you are, odds are you’ve had experiences with coffee and tea. They’re arguably the two most versatile drinks in the world, with hundreds of different varieties from different regions. And they’re simply everywhere—at restaurants, on airplanes and at work.

Las Vegas is a coffee and tea epicenter. For coffee fans, a stellar option is the espresso martini (pictured), at Zeppola Café at The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian. This outpost of the popular New York haunt uses Tito’s Vodka, Kahlua, Baileys Irish Cream and Kimbo espresso coffee in its version, and it’s unforgettably good.

For some great tea, check out the Arte Tea Bar at ARTE MUSEUM. There are several great versions, but we recommend the golden black milk tea, flavored with sugar and your choice of whole or almond milk. –

Just One More!

We don’t know about you, but we’re crazy about cold brew coffee! And if you’re like us, definitely check out the Caffeine Drip cocktail at Carousel Bar at Plaza. It’s made with Absolut Vanilia vodka, cold brew coffee, Mr. Black coffee liqueur and Briottet banana liqueur. Yum!

See How They Rum

Find your balance at this tropical-themed bar and lounge

The Golden Monkey, legend has it, guarded a tiki lounge in a lush forest before getting entangled with a mermaid and losing the mojo that created balance between land and ocean. The bartenders of Golden Monkey Tiki Lounge restore that lost balance through creations made with the finest rums (and all the other spirits!) and ingredients available.

As any aficionado of cane-based distilled spirits will tell you, quality matters. Whether imbibing in a Feelin’ Coconutty (pictured center), with its Captain Morgan base, or heading into

realms of spicy flavors mixed with Patron Reposado for the One Way Ticket (pictured left), the cool temperatures of the drinks is followed by an inner happy warmth.

The Latitude Adjustment (pictured right) should be on the radar of anyone with a taste for golden turmeric. The health-beneficial spice is mixed with Bacardi Mango Chili, peach liqueur, lime juice and hibiscus ginger beer for a cocktail encounter more than worthy of the tiki-motif mugs on the shelves behind the bar that are for sale.

The monkey statuette on the bar is not for sale. It lords over the premises, with surfboards on the walls evoking beach culture. On the menu are the Rum Runner, Polynesian Pearl Diver and Scorpion, as well as specialties like the Category 5. The latter’s combination of Angel’s Envy Bourbon, pineapple, lemon, spiced demerara, grenadine and bitters provides the perfect nightcap after an evening of monkeying around. –Matt Kelemen

Need some help ordering a drink? Check out ‘Las Vegas Magazine’ staff’s current favorite drinks

If there’s one thing the staff of Las Vegas Magazine knows about, it’s cocktails. On any given week, collectively we sample plenty of the newest offerings (or some of the most famous) on the Strip and beyond. So, for this week’s special Drinks Issue, we wanted to share with our readers the benefit of our experience—namely, our current favorite cocktails. We hope these recommendations give you some guidance in navigating a vast world.

THE FREY FOG

WSKY Stadium

5625 Polaris Ave. 725.240.7652

Anyone who has spent any amount of time with me knows my favorite drink: The Old-Fashioned. There’s just something about this bourbon-based cocktail that never gets, excuse the expression, old. This version is made with Frey Ranch bourbon, produced right here in our state of Nevada. A small tumbler is filled with Frey Ranch along with honey syrup and some bitters. But what really makes this one hum is the addition of smoke, accomplished through the use of a smoke hat method—a vessel containing a hole

filled with wood chips sits on top of the glass. It’s then torched by your server, shooting smoke atop the drink. It’s left for just a moment and removed. The result? One of the smoothest drinks to ever hit your lips. –Ken Miller, editor

THE BELLA

Osteria Costa at The Mirage 702.682.8482

might enjoy this drink as much I did. This is a light and lovely cocktail with Cruzan strawberry rum, St-Germain (a floral, fruity French liqueur made of elderflower), cranberry, lemon and pineapple juices, simple syrup and egg white. Yes, it’s sweet, but it goes marvelously with the Italian dishes available here—I suggest the alla vodka with Calabrian chili, ricotta and lumache. The Bella nicely cools down the hint of heat. –Nina King, managing editor

MARGHERITA

Sala 118 at The Venetian 702.414.9000

I’m betting anyone reading this has tried a margarita—on the rocks, blended, salt, no salt. But I’m also betting that you’ve never tried one that’s as tasty as the one at Sala 118 at The Venetian. The newly opened lounge has a cocktail program that concentrates on Italian-inspired cocktails; however, they do take classic cocktails and add a twist, and they’ve hit it out of the park with the Margherita. It’s the best margarita I have ever tasted. Made with interesting ingredients (like fresh oregano!), the spirit used is The Venetian’s own specially designed and

produced tequila, The Venetian Select Paladar reposado, making this not only one of the best margaritas you’ll ever taste, but also an only-in-Vegas-experience. –Kiko Miyasato

PEPPERMINT MOCHA

Carousel Bar at Plaza Plaza. 702.386.2110

I simply cannot resist sipping a warm bev on a cool day—throw in a splash of something that supplies a slight buzz and you’ve got me sold. Made with rich chocolate liqueur, peppermint schnapps and coffee, topped with whipped cream and served with a crushed peppermint candy rim, this sweet treat makes for the perfect afternoon pick-me-up or end-of-thenight delight. Not to mention, this drink’s lively home sits downtown, in prime people-watching territory—one of my favorite activities. Make sure you get to Carousel Bar soon to try this caffeinated cocktail, as it’s part of the limited-time winter menu that is only available through the end of March.

Lindsay Palumbo

Flair bartender breaks the glass ceiling but not the bottles

In celebration of Women’s History Month and this magazine’s first themed issue, we introduce you to Lindsay Palumbo. When it comes to our theme, we’re celebrating cocktails galore, and Palumbo is a flair bartender—a bartender who makes cocktails in an entertaining way. When it comes to celebrating all things women this month, Palumbo is one of only a few female flair bartenders in the city and the only one at Circa Resort & Casino, where you can find her flairing at Overhang Bar.

“I’m big on women empowerment, especially being in a male-dominated field

like flair bartending,” says the Ohio native. Palumbo moved to Las Vegas in 2017, a couple of years after she first visited the city and witnessed flair bartending for the first time and says she thought, “That was the coolest thing I’d ever seen and I could do that!” So she cut her teeth at various flair bars around the city, built up her skills and began a full-time flair bartending career at The D, eventually moving over to its sister property, Circa, when it first opened in 2020.

Palumbo has expanded her love for flair by working it into nearly every facet of her

• Libation • Tourist Mai Tai

“I love Overhang Bar; it’s my favorite bar on the property,” Palumbo says. “If you want to party, if you want to see flair, it’s a great vibe up here.” Watch as she flairs cocktails like the Tourist Mai Tai. The tiki-inspired cocktail is a mix of three different rums, orange and pineapple juices, and grenadine with a Myers’s Rum float. –KM

life: she’s created an annual flair bartending competition to benefit local nonprofit Shade Tree; she teaches beginner’s flair bartending classes for women; she’s been featured on TV shows, documentaries, social media and podcasts promoting the industry; and she’s competed all over the country and abroad.

“In a way it’s how I identify,” she said. “It’s not easy being a woman in this field … but every job I’ve gotten is because I’ve put in the hard work. It’s definitely been an interesting journey, to say the least.” –Kiko
