Let’s get the bad news out of the way first: Yes, it’s COLD in Las Vegas right now! Celebrate Veganuary!

January is the month to go vegan, and we just happen to have the perfect spot to get started Chef Tal Ronnen promotes his restaurant, Crossroads Kitchen, as “an intersection where vegans, flexitarians, omnivores and meat eaters can cross paths to share a delicious meal and a good time,” he says.

However, the menu is strictly vegan, but eaters of all persuasions will be totally satiated—so go for it in celebration of Veganuary!

When Crossroads Kitchen opened in May of 2022 it was the first upscale, all-vegan restaurant to establish itself on the Las Vegas Strip, and the industry waited with bated breath to see if the reception would be a welcomed one.

Well, mission accomplished. While veganism has become a trendy movement, Crossroads proved that it was more than a trend—it’s honest-to-goodness delicious, well-prepared, creative food.

Some highlights that we’ve come to love include the calamari fritti; here, hearts of palm take the place of squid, and it’s served with lemon and diablo sauce. Spicy rigatoni vodka and the sausage, pepper and onion pizza are both fabulous Italian delights, and the Impossible meatballs and stuffed zucchini blossoms are the perfect opening companion.

“Protein” here includes an eggplant skirt steak that would make you swear you were knifing into a nice cut of steak, and the scallopini Milanese is a tender and thinly sliced substitution of what should be a cut of veal.

Right now, guests that would like a taste of a few popular dishes should think about indulging in two different Crossroads tasting menus. The seven-course menu for $175 per person includes the popular eggplant short rib, mushroom and leek tart, and a cauliflower and leek soup, while the five-course tasting menu for $85 per person spotlights the scallop fettucine, mushroom Bianca pizza and a lovely honeycrisp apple and gem lettuce salad. Both tasting menus close the meal with a chef’s selection of dessert; Crossroads no doubt excels at sweet treats that won’t even make you miss that pesty dairy.

If a full vegan meal is something you’re not quite ready to dive into, Crossroads has a welcoming lounge area where you can sip on inspired cocktails with healthy ingredients, and you can order some apps to get your feet wet like the caviar and chips, cheese plate and figs and feta (all amazing substitutions for real seafood and dairy). –Kiko Miyasato Resorts World Las Vegas, 702.676.7978

This Is His Life

Superstar performer celebrates a life well lived in jam-packed residency on the Vegas Strip For thousands of fans who have seen Donny Osmond’s oneman show at Harrah’s Las Vegas, it’s a show for the ages. But for the man himself, it’s much more than that. “It’s a celebration more than a show … it’s like This Is Your Life,” Osmond said in an interview with Las Vegas Magazine. And once you see the show yourself, you’ll most likely agree; after all, this no-holds-barred production is a summation of Osmond’s more than six decades of performing.

Yes, you read that right: Osmond has been performing almost since he could walk. And it’s no exaggeration to say Osmond has done it all and made his mark on every aspect of pop culture. Lest you doubt us, wait until you see the show’s highlight: an auto rapography in which Osmond takes his audience on his life’s journey.

Even going at breakneck speed, it takes almost 10 minutes.

The preparation for that segment was “huge,” Osmond told Las Vegas Magazine. “The memorization of that took a long time.

When I came up with the idea, I called my director and asked, because we are trying to put six decades into 90 minutes, what do you think about me doing a rap? He starting laughing and thought it was brilliant.” Judging by the nightly reactions to the set piece, Osmond’s director was spot on.

What’s really cool about this show is how Osmond takes plenty of time to detail his various successes, from an elaborate production number from Mulan (he was Captain Li Shang, remember?) to dance moves that show how he won his season of Dancing With the Stars. And fans of The Masked Singer no doubt remember his performance as the peacock (he’s picked up a whole slew of new fans from just that appearance).

His body of work is so massive that even Osmond can’t remember it all, a point he makes very clear during a segment where he asks audience members to choose a song from one of his countless albums. Don’t be surprised if he ad-libs his way through it! But man, is it fun. Join the celebration. –Ken Miller

The relatively recently opened Montecristo Cigar Bar is one hot spot to kick back (with a state-of-the-art ventilation and air purification system) and light up a Padrón or Arturo Fuente and pair it with the classic Blood & Sand cocktail, made with Dewar’s blended Scotch whiskey.

Stop into the climate-controlled humidor retail shop lined with Spanish cedar shelfing and stacked with more than 300 different brands of cigars including H. Upmann, La Flor Dominicana, My Father, Montecristo and Romeo Y Julieta. The knowledgeable staff is more than helpful, steering guests in the right direction if new to the cigar game—they’ll even cut and light your cigar.

The 21-and-over lounge matches the décor of the property it calls home, Paris, and the Old-World Parisian feel is reminiscent of a palace in Versailles with gold trim, leather seating, intricate woodwork, marble flooring, wrought iron and dramatic lighting fixtures. This is the perfect place to chill solo or with a group who enjoys a break from the city bustle.

Besides the classic cocktail recipes on the Montecristo menu, the specialty cocktails here are impressive.

Gin lovers should try the Bastille Bramble, a mix of Hendrick’s gin, blackberry liqueur, lemon juice and fresh blackberries. The Branson Sidecar uses Branson VS Phantom cognac and adds a touch of Cointreau and lemon juice. The Parisian Paloma is refreshing with Maestro Dobel Diamante tequila, Fever-Tree grapefruit sofa, lime juice and a splash of simple syrup. Perfect to begin or end your day and a great cigar pairing, the Café Du Bourbon is delicious with Bulleit rye whiskey, cold brew coffee and simple syrup.

Montecristo also serves red and white wines by the glass and bottle, plus champagne, and has a good draft and bottled beer selection.

Enjoy Lavazza coffee offerings, too, like the French-pressed option prepared tableside. Small bites are also available and include an assorted chef’s selection of dry cured meats, imported and domestic cheeses, and freshly made, classic kettle chips.

Downtown steakhouse is a true tribute to the spirit of old Vegas Oscar Goodman is a major historical figure in Las Vegas; from his days as an attorney representing mobsters to his years serving as mayor of Las Vegas, Goodman has made his mark here, one that continues in a major way at the steakhouse downtown that is named after him.

As befits a man of Goodman’s tastes, everything at Oscar’s Steakhouse speaks to the old days when Vegas was a different town, one full of joints where wise guys met to bond over big dinners in leather booths with low lighting and

Sinatra playing on the soundtrack. It’s truly a throwback in every way, right down to the names of some of the cocktails and dishes that you’ll be enjoying, like the Consigliere, with Buffalo trace bourbon, cherry herring and sweet vermouth. If you’re a salad fan, get yourself something nice like Vinnie F’s steakhouse wedge, with peppered bacon, Point Reyes blue cheese and red onion, and Bobby K’s heirloom beets, highlighted by Bucheron cheese and candied pecans.

Appetizers like Johnny Quinn’s crab cake and Crazy Phil’s onion soup? Forget

about it! And carnivores will want to leave the gun and take the house-made ricotta-, Parmesan- and basil-flavored No Nose’s mob meatballs.

How good are the main courses here?

Door-a the Explorer Open up even more fun at AREA15’s arty adventure

If you haven’t been to Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart in AREA15, you don’t know what you’re missing. And unless you look very closely at all the details of the freaky supermarket, you may still not know what you’re missing.

Omega Mart combines art with attraction to create a slightly creepy scramble behind the scenes at the Dramcorp supermarket, with worlds to be discovered behind doors and desks. Even longtime fans of the attraction recently got more to uncover with the opening of two new rooms, both featuring Las Vegas artists.

If you were dying to see what lay in the padlocked icebox in Seven Monolith Village, yank open the door now and check out Rhampa, a wild diorama with layers of meaning and materials accompanied by a mutable soundscape.

Gail Gilbert, a dancer, sculptor and painter, brought the scene to life.

Farther into Dramcorp headquarters, you’ll spy an office environment from the mind of emerging artist Mila May. In this space, titled Daydream, a detail-filled mural will capture your imagination—sound and light are incorporated as well.

“In these new spaces, two incredibly talented local artists express their authentic artistic voice within our exhibit,” said Omega Mart creative director Kent Caldwell in a news release. “The results are magical works of art that reward curiosity.” –Nina King

The small bites, all made fresh and in-house, are super-duper delicious, beginning with the sweets like the Midnight macaron, made with black cocoa almond cookies, black cocoa ganache and salted caramel. Comedian is at home in Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club Josh Wolf recently reminisced about how he fell in love with stand-up comedy. “The first time I got onstage, I was 15 years old,” he said. “I had seen stand-up on TV and I was just fascinated by it. I had found an open mic in the town next to mine, at a coffee shop. My mom and dad drove me, they sat in the front row. … The audience actually laughed and I was like, ‘Ah man, this is what I want to do.’”

It’s all about family when Wolf isn’t onstage. He has a podcast with his son (who participates in his Vegas shows occasionally) and enjoys time with his wife.

And he loves that he can live and work in Vegas. “I’m having more fun, I have more energy, I’m an older gentleman, but I don’t feel like I’ve lost any desire for comedy, and I feel so grateful to be here right now in this moment doing what I do.” –Kiko Miyasato

Find something to crow about with Vegas’ fried chicken offerings

By Nina King When it comes to fried chicken, you’ll discover a multitude of options for this perennial favorite in numerous restaurants across Las Vegas. Dig in!

One of the trendiest things in fried chicken isn’t new, although Korean-American chef, TV personality and cookbook author Judy Joo’s casual Seoul Bird at Aria is relatively recent. Situated in Proper Eats Food Hall, Seoul Bird serves up Korean fried chicken, which stands out, Joo says, because of the process the chicken goes through as it’s prepared. “We use a wet batter, opposed to a dry batter… Korean fried chicken originally was a wet batter. Over time, it’s evolved and people are starting to use dry batters for it because dry batter is so much easier operationally.”

But Seoul Bird, Joo says, will continue to use wet batters. “It’s much more labor intensive, but the result is so much better. (You) get this thin, crispy crust. People call it eggshell chicken because you get that crack.” Her version of the chicken also incorporates matzo meal and potato starch, as well as a double-frying technique to keep the crust crispy.

at Joo’s London restaurant, Jinjuu (Joo resides in England). “Our Korean fried chicken had a cult status following— people just could not get enough of it, and could not even walk by the venue without coming in and having a cheeky little bite. And so we decided it deserved its own concept, and there was definitely a gap in the market, particularly in the U.K.” Joo has opened four branches of Seoul Bird, with more in the works.

Traditional Southern fried chicken shines on menus across Las Vegas as well, with Yardbird Southern Table & Bar at The Venetian (a venue from Florida-based 50 Eggs), where you will find Lewellyn’s Fine Fried Chicken, a full half of the bird. It comes in both a Nashville hot style and in a Korean style as well.

Día Nacional de la Banda is a rare event not to be missed by Mexican music fans Word of Día Nacional de la Banda returning to Las Vegas is enough incentive for attendees of previous banda superconcerts to add it to their calendars, but a lineup that counts legendary singer-songwriter Pancho Barraza as headliner practically makes attendance mandatory. Even better, the concert serves as a tribute to Barraza with a curated lineup set to pay homage to one of Sinaloa’s favorite musical sons.

Barraza, 63, will be honored the day of the show with his own piece of pavement on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars, then will serve as guest of honor on a bill that features La Arrolladora Banda El Limón, Luis Angel “El Flaco”, La Adictiva, Banda Los Sebastianes, Edwin Luna y La Trakalosa De Monterrey, Gerardo Coronel, Majo Aguilar, Adal Loreto, Banda Renovación. Special guest Eslabon Armado will keep the stage warm as the penultimate performer of the evening.

The concert is cousin to its precursor Calibash, which has been held in Las Vegas in the past but only took place in the Golden State this year. Día Nacional de la Banda is the Vegas version of bringing the best in banda music to the same stage in celebration of Mexico’s music of the people.

Like country music, banda has its origins in the 19th century when horns and wind instruments became obtainable in Mexico’s villages and musicians began to formulate a style of playing influenced by marching bands and European folk dances such as

polkas. Where country relied on string instruments that evolved into bass and electric guitars, banda’s bottom end is established with brass. If there’s a tuba or saxophone, it’s banda.

Barraza established himself in Mexico’s music industry in the ’90s as a grupo vocalist but became a featured singer with Banda los Recoditos where his songwriting ability began to match his compassionate singing. He was just as adept with rancheros and romanticos, and released first solo album Mis Canciones de Amor in 1995. He became known as “The Poet of Love” with many chart successes.

His most recent single released in October, “Me Voy a Alejar,” exemplifies his style and demonstrates his continuing relevance as an artist.

Eslabon Armado. Having the youthful Mexican-American act as special guests opening for Barraza creates a bridge between generations, as Eslabon Armado is part of a new wave of banda proponents charting the music’s future course.

More minimalist than ensemble, Eslabon Armado relies more on guitars enhanced by horns than synthesized sounds to get people on their feet. La Adictiva has no such restrictions and turns the proceedings into party time with songs such as “El Pisto.”

Lush arrangement in the recorded work from Luis Angel “El Flaco” will fill T-Mobile Arena with romantic atmosphere during his set. Expect songs of amor, both faithful and forbidden, from the likes of La Arrolladora Banda El Limón, Banda Los Sebastianes, Edwin Luna y La Trakalosa De Monterrey, Coronel, Aguilar and Loreto. It’s a rare occasion to have so much talent under one roof on one date, one that should not be missed by connoisseurs of cumbia beats.

Santana returns to Vegas residency after streaming release of Carlos documentary Long-awaited biographical documentary Carlos was released to theaters in September for a limited run after being screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in July. Now it’s available for streaming and provides the perfect warm-up before attending An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live. Carlos Santana has been leading his band through career-spanning sets at their House of Blues residency since May 2012, but the film makes it possible to know the man and his music intimately before seeing him live.

A first-person memoir, The Universal Tone: Bringing My Story to Light, was published in November 2014 and gives similar insight into his origins, musical evolution and spiritual journey.

It could not provide visuals of his father playing the violin or capture the wonder in Santana’s voice as he describes hearing birds singing in response to José Santana’s bowed-string melodies.

The youthful Santana would first learn music on violin. His father was a classically trained mariachi musician, so theory was instilled before he first heard a guitarist playing through an amplifier. Santana would

exchange four strings for six and become a disciple of blues players such as B.B. King and Albert King, both of whom he would one day play with onstage.

His fate was sealed in San Francisco. Carlos the film depicts the

circumstances that led to the ambitious, driven Santana meeting promoter Bill Graham and being invited to play the Fillmore West. It reveals which Grateful Dead member gave him the acid that fueled his inspired playing at Woodstock. It allows him to relate how taking a spiritual path in the early ’70s helped him escape the tragic circumstances that affected peers such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison.

There is a lot of musical footage featuring dozens of musicians that helped him realize his musical visions. “Real musicians, they call it a force of nature,” he says early in the documentary. “They create a different kind of transformation molecular structure through sound resonance and vibration.”

Santana’s career had ups and downs, of course. The film climaxes with the story of the success of Supernatural, which reaches its silver

anniversary this year and garnered eight Grammys. Mega-hits from that album “Smooth” and “Maria Maria” have long been highlights of An Intimate Evening.

There is one part of the film, which counts Ron Howard and Brian Grazer as executive producers and which was directed by rising filmmaker Rudy Valdez, that was particularly poignant: Santana relates the story about how his father lost the will to go on once he could no longer play the violin. It’s not sad, it’s just what happened.

One day Santana himself will no longer be able to play his chosen instrument. That day is long in the future judging from the fretwork he demonstrated in Carlos. For now, he leads a contented existence performing in a band with wife Cindy Blackman on drums, providing a reallife ending of the documentary for fans that attend his concerts after seeing the film.

‘Soul of Motown’ performers Sean Stewart Godfrey and Brandon Godfrey make beautiful music Soul of Motown is one of the most popular musical tribute shows in Las Vegas, and the undeniable onstage chemistry between Sean Stewart Godfrey and Brandon Godfrey is a big part of the show’s success. The two talented singers were married in 2020 after launching the show with their castmates at the Westgate Cabaret in 2019, a rollicking tour through some of the most beloved music in American history that will have you dancing in the aisles. It’s a can’t-miss production, but it hits an emotional peak when these artists duet.

Brandon: When I first came in for the audition and saw her onstage, I just thought, she is beautiful. The whole night, I could care less about the other guys performing. I was in another show at the time and had to drive back to Virginia, and I told my friend that night that there’s this girl in the show, and that’s gonna be my girl. But I had to bide my time.

Sean: It was six months before I had any idea whatsoever. Everybody else seemed to be in on the secret but me!

Brandon: You don’t realize what type of energy you exude. With us, there’s always been a connection that reads well to the audience.

Sean: Because we’re married, we gel perfectly onstage. It works for us, and it’s

funny, because we had chemistry to begin with. Even before we were together, people who knew nothing about us would come up and talk to us, thinking we’re together. ticketmaster.com

Sean: It gets no better. Motown has the ability to bring you out whatever you’re feeling. It can shift your spirit.

Brandon: There’s a timbre, a sound that Motown brings, a beat that Motown brings, and it just makes you feel something. That’s the feeling Motown was going for back in its time. There was a lot going on, those were tough times. Motown makes you forget about everything that’s going on and says, I’m here for a good time. It exudes love.

Sean: A lot of other shows are doing impersonations or other things to take you back to that era. The thing we love about this show is we can bring our own twist to it, individualize it to give our own perception of that song. It’s a modern Motown concert, a tribute to the artists from our hearts.

Brandon: “Tracks of My Tears” is probably my favorite. It’s a classic and it tells a story ... It’s a pretty song to stand and sing, but when you get the story and the emotion behind the song, you feel like you’ve never heard it that way before.

Sean: There are some (songs by) artists that were not Motown artists. Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” will always be my favorite song, and it was originally done by Dolly Parton, who is from Tennessee, my home state.
