Can You Feel It?

What a fantastic week you chose to visit Las Vegas! The city is gearing up for the international excitement that is F1, and you can feel the energy as you look at the ever-evolving Strip, with the track’s outline beginning to come into shape, along with bleachers and other race-related constructs. This is a week where you’re really going to want to get out of your hotel room and do something exciting, and that’s what this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is designed to help you do.

Let’s start with entertainment. One of the best magicians on the Strip, America’s Got Talent champion Shin Lim, is ready to astound you with his sleight-of-hand mastery in his show at The Mirage, Limitless (“Where There’s Smoke, There’s Magic,” p. 32). Speaking of AGT, an act that made quite a splash there years ago, Jabbawockeez, are packing houses and stunning audiences with some of the best moves you’ll ever see in Timeless (“Moves & Swagger,” p. 20). Both shows are family-friendly, but if you’re looking for something a bit more adults-only, it doesn’t get better—or bawdier—than ROUGE at The STRAT (“In the Flesh,” p. 42).

Now onto dining! We’ve featured some of the Strip’s fi nest options in this week’s issue, from great seasonal dishes with an unparalleled view at Top of the World at The STRAT (“Looking Good,” p. 28) and classic favorites at Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse at Flamingo (“Organized Prime,” p. 18) to authentic Emerald Isle-inspired dishes and drinks at Rí Rá Irish Pub at The Shoppes at Mandalay Place (“You’re In Luck,” p. 17 ).

How about a nice drink? Check out Alle Lounge on 66 at Resorts World (“Above It All,” p. 21) and S Bar at Mandalay Bay (“It All Adds Up,” p. 24).

Feel that? It’s the excitement for all you’re about to experience. Enjoy!

Have a ‘You’ Day

Tucked away on the third floor of Treasure Island, Oleksandra Spa & Salon is an intimate space that is reserved for healing, pampering and tranquility.

“We are an unexpected, hidden gem,” said Jennifer Martinez, director of spa and salon operations. “That’s the feedback I hear from so many people, particularly Las Vegas locals. Our spa is small and intimate when compared to other spas on the Strip. We really pride ourselves on providing a luxurious and intimate experience in a beautiful, ultra-clean, relaxing environment.”

And we must mention this facility’s staff; they’re some of the nicest, welcoming and professional people you’ll meet at a spa, making the experience that much more special.

Before your appointment, the spa offers several ways to begin to unwind including a Jacuzzi and sauna, and a quiet space to lie down and stretch out on a form-fitting chaise while reading provided magazines and sipping on complimentary coffee or tea. The spa also provides showers and vanities with a host of primping amenities to get yourself ready for a day on the Strip after your appointment.

When it comes to appointments, Oleksandra Spa & Salon offers a laundry list of experiences. A few highlights include the signature hydrafacial, a

30-minute treatment with immediate results, leaving the face with dewy, glowing skin. “The signature hydrafacial is a three-step procedure that delivers a gentle cleanse and exfoliation, followed by painless extractions, and finishes with an ultra-hydrating blend of antioxidants to nourish and deeply hydrate the skin,” Martinez said.

Moving down from the face, enjoy tons of massage options at this facility, from the classic Swedish massage, hot stone and prenatal to more targeted areas like the ultimate leg and foot massage and the headache helper massage.

For whole body goodness, don’t skip the Dead Sea mud wrap. The mud, applied all over the body, is loaded with essential minerals and helps tighten skin tissue and increase blood circulation. After showering off all the mud, a coat of special moisturizer is applied, leaving skin super-soft and replenished.

The salon portion here offers all one would need for a special night or day out, or simply the chance to get beautified during your stay. You can book everything from hair services and makeup application to manicures, pedicures and lash application. Your oasis awaits. –Kiko Miyasato

Oodles of Oddities

Explore neat items while you imbibe

To find the Cabinet of Curiosities Bar and Lounge, head down an escalator from the casino floor, where you’ll also find REAL BODIES at Horseshoe Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Monorail Horseshoe/Paris monorail station. Traffic is brisk and constant, giving the cocktail lounge decorated with small antiques, brica-brac and objets d’art a high level of exposure.

It’s a destination, though, with most visitors having heard about the Cabinet’s inner sanctum and not-sosecret speakeasy, The Lock.

Anyone 21-plus can walk into the Cabinet beginning at noon daily and get signature craft cocktails, top-shelf tequila or off-menu improvisations. Revealing a predilection for bourbon may inspire mixologist Caylor (we’re on a first-name basis here) to concoct an Old-Fashioned variation, made with Skrewball peanut butter whiskey, that tastes like a dessert.

Signature drinks include Curious Cosmopolitans, Pink Stone Eggs, Berry Dreamies and Flea Market Martinis, but the most popular menu item is the bourbon-based Festival of Lights homage to flying lantern festivals.

The Lock, which requires a reservation, sends visitors back a century with brick walls, vintage ceiling tile and Charlie Chaplin movies projected onto one side of the room. Lounge chairs and low-volume old-time music create a perfect ambience for conversation and cocktails, with signature drinks on the QR code menus. Even better, a Secret Menu provides the opportunity to fill out personal specifics regarding one’s current mood, flavor preferences, favorite destinations and zodiac sign.

The result may be an indescribably delicious bourbon concoction or whiskey sour infused with banana that creates a frothy surface for mixologist Gabby to drizzle syrup on the three-cherry garnish before dropping it in the glass.

There are other speakeasies in Las Vegas, but there are no other speakeasies with a room like this. The Cabinet of Curiosities Bar and Lounge and The Lock are escape rooms of a different kind where one can relax, reset and experience an atmosphere truly unlike any other on the Strip. –Matt

You’re in Luck

Tasty drinks and dishes channel the Irish spirit

If you love yourself a Guinness, you will undoubtedly dig Rí Rá Irish Pub. Not only will you find the esteemed stout there, but you’ll also find a variety of Irish beers, ciders, cocktails, wines and whiskies. Heck, you can even get a Guinness Zero, which is nonalcoholic.

Enjoy that drink at one of Rí Rá Irish Pub’s three bars, all constructed with salvaged materials; this place really looks like an old-timey pub. There’s plenty of hearty dishes, some from recipes straight out of Ireland and some with a little twist.

The traditional potato cakes are pan-fried, with cheddar cheese, sour cream and green onion making the dish delish. You’ll also find a deviled Scotch egg, with deviled egg mousse providing a surprise. Sausage rolls are a favorite, with puff pastry wrapping sausage. Potato and leek soup is nice and creamy with an abundance of flavor, but you can add smoked bacon and Irish cheddar on if you wish. Wings and several salad choices make other good starters. It’s quite difficult when you’re choosing an entrée—you’ll find plenty that

represent Ireland, with everything from shepherd’s pie to bangers and mash on the menu. The all-day Irish breakfast even includes black and white pudding, in addition to your eggs, Irish rashers and bangers, and toast. But you’ll also find burgers, salmon, Irish curry and more.

No matter what you choose, from food to drink to fun, you’ll thank your lucky stars you stopped by. –Nina King

Organized Prime

Strip restaurant pays tribute to the city’s mob history

Do you think Las Vegas was better when the mob ran things? If so, you’ll probably want to check out one of the Strip’s premium steakhouses, one that pays homage to two of the city’s most (in)famous figures who helped shape it into what it is today: Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse, named for Bugsy Siegel (of Flamingo fame) and Meyer Lansky. Everything here is in honor of that bygone era, from the “entrance” that re-creates the faux bakeries mobsters used to enter restaurants to The Count Room, a “speakeasy” featuring world-class cocktails.

Appetizers here are all wonderful. The premium seafood tower with Maine lobster, Alaskan king crab, poached shrimp and East and West Coast oyster selections can be prepared for either two or four diners. The hand-cut prime beef tartare is served with truffle crème fraîche, sous vide egg yolk and pantoasted country bread, while the crab cake is prepared with jumbo lump crab, Meyer lemon emulsion, piquillo pepper aioli and crispy shallots.

After enjoying steakhouse classics like 17th century onion soup (loooove that Gruyere!), shrimp cocktail and a Caesar salad, it’s time to dig into the main courses,

and the selection here is as varied and tempting as you’d expect in a high-end Strip steakhouse. When choosing a steak, select from either wet-aged (for a minimum of 21 days) or dry-aged (60 days). Then get ready for some of the best meat ever, from a 20-ounce bone-in ribeye and 18-ounce bone-in New York cut to a 32-ounce tomahawk ribeye—and for some real enhancement, drizzle on a variety of sauces, from bearnaise and hollandaise to creamy horseradish and bordelaise.

Not a huge turf fan? There’s plenty of surf on this menu, from pan-seared Scottish salmon (served with haricots verts and yellow pepper coulis), seared diver scallops (served with fire-roasted corn, white bean purée and enoki mushrooms) and Chilean sea bass (served with cauliflower espuma, sautéed garlic broccolini and fried leeks).

Desserts include Bugsy’s Banana Cake, made with peanut butter mousse, mascarpone Chantilly cream and warm banana caramel sauce, and the Cherry Chocolate Bomb, which features a chocolatedipped brownie, salted caramel mousse, cherry gelée and red velvet sauce. –Ken Miller

Moves and Swagger

Dance troupe continues its strong run on the Strip

Regardless of how you regard dance acts, it’s hard not to be swept up in the incredibly positive vibes provided by Jabbawockeez and the newest incarnation of its ever-evolving show, Timeless. While dancing is at the core of this show, it’s so much more than that: it’s theater; it’s audience participation; it’s the entire range of human emotion. And it’s really true to its title.

Troupe founders Kevin “KB” Brewer and Joe “Punkee” Larot (as well as about 20 core and auxiliary members) are still showing off the skills that won them acclaim on America’s Got Talent in 2006 and that won them first prize on America’s Best Dance Crew in 2008. All members wear essentially the same gear, with masks making them indistinguishable from one another. It’s an ingenious tactic, one that makes you focus on the dance instead of individual personalities. (Plus, it just looks cool!)

Throughout the show, you’ll see dance moves from various eras, from hip-hop to zoot suit swing. The soundtrack is as equally varied, and its eclectic nature comes in particularly handy during an audience karaoke segment. Various members volunteer, having no idea what they’re about to sing. It’s always hilarious, and connects audience members in a very distinct way. Connection is ultimately the point of Timeless. Through the moves of the faceless, we see how alike we all are. Some of us are just better dancers, that’s all. –Ken

It All Adds Up

Let’s make it simple for you. If you’re looking to make plans for a night out, head to S Bar.

That it’s swanky is an understatement. This place is slick and beautiful in décor, but that doesn’t mean that it’s pretentious or hard to get into. The cover is—there is no cover! There is open seating without a food and beverage minimum spend, a rarity in Las Vegas nightlife.

“We want you to feel VIP but not have to be VIP to get in,” said S Bar general manager Tylor Kezar. “S Bar is very much a cocktail-focused, gastropub-style venue. We are unique. We’re boutique. Intimate. We’re a new breath on nightlife.”

Kezar’s descriptors are all correct. Guests have multiple ways to enjoy the night at S Bar. Looking for a meal before the drinks? S Bar offers small plates of specialty dishes; order a few together and it becomes dinner, including delicious desserts.

Onto the cocktails, which feature classics with a twist, and recipes that call for fresh ingredients. Kezar puts three on his list to try, starting with the Blackberry Lavender Lemonade, mixed with Glacier 45 huckleberry vodka, fresh blackberries, lavender simple syrup and fresh lemon juice. “It’s refreshing, berry forward, Pacific Northwest with the blackberry and huckleberry,” Kezar

said. Next up, the Lies & Hearsay, with The Botanist gin, fresh basil, basil-infused syrup, fresh strawberries and tonic. Classic comes by way of Kezar’s third suggestion, the Midas’ Manhattan. “It’s very traditional; an upscale Manhattan,” he said. “Very booze forward with a little gold magic.” Served in its vessel alongside a flask also filled with the concoction (two cocktails for one price!), it’s a mix of Bulleit rye, Amaro Nonino liqueur, bitters and gold flakes.

If nothing on S Bar’s cocktail menu piques your interest, don’t fret, as Kezar says that every bar-

Mark Mackey

Step into his world of pure chocolate imagination

“I like to tell people I’m Willy Wonka,” says Mark Mackey, chief chocolatier for Ethel M Chocolate Factory. Ironically, it was his favorite movie growing up. And from a young age, he says, “I developed a passion for food and creating things to make people smile.”

So he went to culinary school, graduated and took an internship at Mars—the world-renowned candy brand— while he figured out what he wanted to do as a career.

“That’s where I really discovered my passion for chocolate,” Mackey says.

The 18-week internship turned into 17 years with the company. Mackey spent many years at the Mars headquarters in New Jersey, where he worked with the incubator team to develop new items, but by 2015, he had made his way to Las Vegas and Ethel M—the artisanal chocolate branch of the brand.

“I wanted to find my way here,” he says. “This is where you get a chance to be creative—create things that you really can’t create at mass scale. Because we have the Mars backing, we can source our own beans, blend our own

beans, craft our own artisanal recipes.”

Visit the retail store and you can peruse all of Mackey’s chocolate creations—and there are a lot of them, and they are all mouthwatering.

“Creating chocolate, tasting chocolate—that’s my favorite part,” he says. “When I’m in the plant creating something and guests come in and watch us ... and look at what I’m working on, and I see their reactions—it’s like working in an open kitchen in a restaurant. Pretending like you’re Willy Wonka is always a fun thing.” –Kiko Miyasato

Top of the World pairs amazing views with a magnificent menu

If you want views, there might be no better place in Las Vegas than Top of the World at The STRAT. Not only does the 106th-floor restaurant boast soaring windows from floor to ceiling, it also revolves 360 degrees, which means diners get to see the entire Las Vegas Valley in the span of 80 minutes. It’s impressive during the early evening hours but breathtaking after dark, with the twinkling lights stretching to the mountains on all sides.

The room itself is lovely, with a grayand-blue palette, table and booth seating, and walls of wine and the kitchen on the interior wall. Once you’re seated (and I do recommend the window seating, although someone with a fear of heights may want something a bit farther away), choose from Top of the World’s stellar cocktail list. The Creamsicle features Ketel One vodka, Caravella Orangecello, Licor 43 Original along with lemon, kumquat, aquafaba

and candied orange. Doesn’t that sound delightful? Living up to its name, the Elevated Margarita combines Casamigos blanco tequila, Cointreau and lime juice, accented by salted sea foam.

Top of the World has classic starters like seafood, including oysters on the half shell, and the Shellfish Display for Two, featuring Maine lobster, poached shrimp, citrus-infused crab and

Nosh 28 | 10.15.23 Las Vegas Magazine Photos by Anthony Mair

oysters. Wild mushroom ravioli is accented with toasted hazelnuts, guanciale, pickled beech mushrooms and Calabrian chili, while the Billionaire’s Eggs star crème fraîche, whipped yolks, Iberico ham and Osetra caviar.

A chopped salad with pancetta, avocado, soft boiled egg and asparagus is elevated with the addition of lobster, while spinach and watercress salad juxtaposes the flavors of those two greens.

The restaurant has a strong beef program, sourcing meat from such purveyors as Creekstone Farms, Snake River Farms and Harris Ranch, with prime ribeye, New York strip and filets in a variety of sizes and styles. Even for a beef fan, the choices are dizzying.

But that’s just part of what’s here. Find everything from a smoked half chicken to a Kurobuta pork chop with whole lobster mac and cheese, Parmesan-crusted salmon, and braised bison short ribs available. And the vegan stuffed squash is plumped full of miso-roasted sweet potato, smoked oyster mushrooms, avocado and forbidden rice. You’ll notice many familiar sides, such as potato purée with sweet cream butter, mac and cheese, grilled asparagus and French fries. But roasted artichokes, as well as peas and grits (with pimento cheese polenta, crispy ham and braised spring peas) beg for attention.

An excellent way to enjoy Top of the World is to book the dinner and a show package, where guests can enjoy preferred seating at one of The STRAT’s fun shows. The menu for Top of the World includes a glass of champagne; Caesar salad; entrée and side; plus warm butter cake. (Some restrictions apply). And if you are looking for a special way to propose, The STRAT has several really cool packages to choose from, with roses, chocolates, champagne, photos and dinners. VOTED “BEST FAMILY SHOW” AND “BEST ALL AGES SHOW”

WORLD FAMOUS DANCE CREW

Close-up specialist Shin Lim may have the fastest hands on the Strip

Shin Lim is surely one of the United States Playing Card Company’s most favored customers. The close-magic master has small, sealed packets with four Bicycle brand cards a xed to every seat at his Limitless residency inside the Mirage Theatre. Each packet is printed with the instructions “PLEASE DO NOT OPEN UNTIL SHIN LIM TELLS YOU.”

Tempting as it is, and it can’t be stressed enough, do not open the package until Shim Lin tells you. He will tell you after his colleague, Colin Cloud, appears onstage and demonstrates his mastery of the art of mentalism for the first of several times. He’s 100 percent accurate at guessing birthdays during a Saturday-night show in September and draws on portrait-making skills to illustrate

thoughts of audience members before they think them.

Brash and extroverted, Cloud’s stage style both complements and contrasts with Lim’s. Both have a predilection for slim tailoring, but Lim is more ethereal and enigmatic than his performing partner. His aura is enhanced by the romantic ambience of Sting’s 1993 song “Shape of My Heart,” which serves as the theme to an early show segment of four-suited sleight-of-hand.

A two-time winner of America’s Got Talent, Lim has an approach to card manipulation that almost looks like real-time, real-life video editing. With his sleeves well clear of his wrists, Lim make cards appear and disappear with a hyperkinetic flourish. It’s a skill not unique to Lim but perhaps a ected by 10,000 hours of piano practice that resulted in carpal-tunnel syndrome.

Doctor-ordered rest gave Lim a chance to focus on cardistry. Magic began to pull ahead of becoming a concert pianist as a life goal, although the piano would eventually play a part in his act physically as well as narratively. A runner-up placing at a triannual competition held by the Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiques only fueled Lim’s ambitions. He competed again and placed first. Now he may have the fastest hands of any magician on the Strip. Close magic is his specialty. Lim is of a generation that grew up with the technology available to him. Rather than experiment with how to make close magic work on massive monitors, he seems to have conceived of his tricks with large-scale video viewing in mind. His approach works seamlessly with biographical elements and creates a cohesive thread throughout the show, his performing presence distinguished by a cascade of hair that nearly falls over his eyes. Alternating stage-time with wisecracking Cloud keeps the proceedings moving at a brisk pace. The two will cross paths by the conclusion in an unpredictable way but work mainly with audience members for the duration of the show.

As good as Cloud is, no one has figured out how to involve the entire audience in participating the way Lim does with the sealed packet trick. And to reinforce the trick’s e ectiveness It can’t be stressed enough: Do not open the packet until Shin Lim tells you.

Celebrate 25 years of Cirque du Soleil’s “O” with La Grande Experience

It’s hard to believe that Cirque du Soleil is celebrating the silver anniversary of “O”, its second production to open in Las Vegas. The splashy spectacular at Bellagio was revolutionary a quarter-century ago, the next step in the Cirque approach to entertainment, which was established on the Strip five years earlier at Treasure Island with Mystère Late director Franco Dragone drew on the liquid of life as a theme to innovate and expand on aesthetics and possibilities.

Whether returning or attending for the fi rst time, there is no better way to see the show than La Grande Experience. There may be other VIP experiences, but none seat you in an exclusive suite with the same view from which the creators gazed at the stage as they developed their concept. Up to four people share space comfortably with a panoramic vista and five speakers generating maximal dynamic sonic ambience.

For the Experiencers, the evening starts preshow in a backstage lounge where champagne is served with a selection of light bites that, before the last 7 p.m. Saturday performance of September, included servings of fruit, nuts, prosciutto and cheese. Host Jordyn gave background on the show to a small party that included a family of three who had enjoyed the show su ciently enough in the past to return for a special young lady’s 12th birthday.

As Jordyn explained along with a video presentation, the title of the show is derived from the French word for water, “eau.” Some cast members, four of whom would shortly enter the lounge for a meet-andgreet and photos, would need

specialized skills in swimming, diving and other feats that could require a degree of submersion as well as skills with fi re and whips.

Cast members come from far-flung places such as Mongolia, Russia and Great Britain. La Grande Experience allows them to relate what it’s like to be a part of the show with its fast pace and multiple costume changes. A photo opportunity with the costumed Cirque performers concludes the meetand-greet before they prepare for curtain call.

Ostensibly about the journey of Sicilian boy Guifà through a magical realm under the guidance of ghostly theater manager Eugen, the abstract storyline need not be followed for the show to be accessible due to acts such as an aerial hoops segment that represents the hydrological relationship between surface water and sky.

Eight world-class acrobats express grace and strength on a floating barge. A steel-framed ship is constructed to combine the traditional circus discipline of the aerial cradle with gymnastic parallel bars. Contortionists descend from the rafters to interpret the beauty of the human form through body language. Trapeze artists and synchronized swimmers enable expression above and below water, while high divers plunge 60 feet into a small exposed area of the pool.

Then there are clowns, of course, as well awe-inspiring stage production where center-stage is alternately a dry surface and a body of water. It’s an amazing show from any sightline in the house, but for the ultimate “O” memory, La Grande Experience will not disappoint.

Get to know Steve Aoki, one of Omnia nightclub’s—and music’s—biggest stars

Las Vegas Magazine 10.15.23 | 37

rammy-nominated

DJ and musical artist

Steve Aoki describes his show at Omnia nightclub at Caesars Palace in three words: Playhouse, adventurous and journey. If you’ve ever been to one of Aoki’s shows, then you get it. If you haven’t, then you really need to get on that, because an Aoki show is one of the biggest parties you’ll experience on the Strip. Catch him at Omnia on Oct. 21 this week.

Las Vegas Magazine had a chance to have some fun with the DJ as we photographed him inside Omnia nightclub and got to chat with the renaissance man.

Aoki has long been at the top of the DJ world—he’s consistently been rated

a top-10 DJ in the world, according to DJ Magazine. His unique style in both approaching music and life have kept him an in-demand performer and beloved celebrity all around the world. Aoki is heavily involved in charity work, even starting his own Aoki Foundation that “supports organizations in the brain science and research areas with a specific focus on regenerative medicine and brain preservation.” He’s also a supporter of new music and artists through his 27-year-old independent record label, Dim Mak. Aoki is also a restaurateur (following in his father’s

footsteps, who launched the successful Benihana brand in the U.S. in the 1960s) with a portfolio of more than 10 restaurants, including Kuru Kuru Pa at Resorts World and his pizza shop brand, Pizzaoki at Aria.

In his entrepreneurial endeavors, Aoki co-founded and launched a successful trading-card game IP called MetaZoo. “We’ve been developing and growing this IP called MetaZoo during COVID, and when everything opened up, this IP opened up ... it’s grown to become a $50 million company,” Aoki says.

“It really is the fastest-growing

So (2022) was really about understanding, preparation, experimenting, learning different worlds, brand building and seeing one of those IPs take over and become one of the leading IPs in its industry. We’re one of the leaders in the space. It’s incredible to see something, outside of what I usually do, grow to such a culture-impacting company. When I think about that, I think about ... exploring different areas outside of music and growing those.”

Also during the COVID-19 pandemic, Aoki took to the studio to record his seventh studio album, HiROQUEST: Genesis, which was released last year.

“HiROQUEST was born during COVID,” Aoki says. “It was born during isolation. My environment informs my creative process. For the most part wherever I’m touring, wherever I’m traveling is always going to be part of my musical story. Because this album was born in isolation, I was experimenting more. Which I (had) stopped doing, which is kinda sad because of how efficient my music life is—I’m pumping out records that are from my live shows or

collaborations with what is happening within culture. So I went back to my roots (with this album).

“I was playing guitar more, playing bass more. I really started thinking about seeking out artists that spoke to me; the sound, the stylings of my youth. I put on more of an A&R hat and I was really seeking out alternative-style singers and also looking at artists that haven’t broken yet, artists on the rise,

doing something fresh and cool.

“In large part, there’s a lot of brandnew artists on the album and the core genre is more alternative. I still have to represent the global sound of Steve Aoki, which is Latin-influenced, hiphop-influenced, EDM-influenced, and I love that on this album that I made sure to showcase different genres. It’s once again a global sound, but the core genre is alternative.”

To say Aoki is a busy man would be putting it lightly, but it’s always full speed ahead for a man filled with much success and a tenacity for life. He’s a man with many plans and has no intention of slowing down. Aoki performs close to 40 shows a year here in Las Vegas—also his home base. Don’t miss your chance to check out one of his shows at Omnia—a promise of musical nirvana and always a visual feast of fun.

ROUGE

Expectations will be high for a show that bills itself as “the sexiest show in Vegas” as ROUGE does. The nightly neo-burlesque show does not disappoint, with a wink and a 20-member cast of really, really, good-looking performers whose costume changes sometimes leave them exposed during their steamy, sensual acts.

Sexualized skits alternate with acrobatic feats and choreography as Dr. Libido, a self-proclaimed “surgeon of sex” dressed in steampunk finery and a white top hat, plays the master of ceremonies for the proceedings.

The good doctor, assisted by buxom Nurse Naughty, seems to have an accent with a New Orleans twang. That and an early sketch set in 18th-century France are aspects of the show most directly tied to its title. That is, the French word for “red” lends itself well to

Be ready for anything at adults-only

presenting Parisian-style entertainment or Crescent City ribaldry, but ROUGE expands beyond being a modern version of Folies Bergère.

That long-running show at the Tropicana tried to revise its formulas of showgirls mixed with musical numbers unsuccessfully before closing in 2009. It really needed a complete overhaul to reach the level that ROUGE occupies now. One key element that makes ROUGE click with audiences is the breaking of the barrier between the stage and showroom.

Performers with a flair for bondage fashion engage in a di erent kind of immersion before the show, with some pairing up on platforms for erotic entanglements and others mingling with guests.

Sometimes they get very close, but like most of their professional peers, ROUGE cast members are good at reading the crowd for those who might be amenable to a close encounter. The same applies

to Dr. Libido, who chooses a few audience members to flirt with and lightly embarrass throughout the show. There are participation segments once the crowd is warmed up from all the heat coming from the stage.

The action is augmented by large video screens at the side of the stage that provide close-ups of

the gorgeous cast members. Strap acts have been done before, but never in a tantalizing tandem that ends with both performers forming a star with their bodies. “Light My Fire” kicks o a soundtrack that includes Nina Simone’s version of “I Put a Spell on You,” which captures the sophisticated spirit ROUGE exudes throughout the various acts of acrobatic strength and gravity-defying choreography. There are beautiful bodies everywhere. There are transfixing acts such as a siren splashing in an oversized martini glass, hand balancers and full-cast dance routines. And there are costumes, some of which leave little to the imagination, others that evoke laughter.

ROUGE creator Hanoch Rosènn combined his experience developing previous productions Extravaganza and WOW–The Vegas Spectacular with “sexpertise” to evolve a concept of risqué variety show as adult playground, the foundation for what could indeed be the sexiest show in Vegas. How successful that realized vision turned out is a matter for the eyes of the beholders.
