Around the District A New Year brings with it new perspectives, and the month of January has challenged our schools to think outside of the box. From using dances to help students prepare for the day, to creating NYE Resolutions that focus on exercising thinking and cognitive skills, one could say we are starting the year off on the right foot.
Here is a recap of some major moments of January:

Needwood Middle eighth-grader
Kara Nuque has done it again: She won the 2022 Glynn County Spelling Bee. Eighteen rounds of fierce competition ended with Kara

one of her toughest (and quite possibly closest) opponents yet: her little sister, Kamille. The C.B. Greer Elementary fourth-grader will serve as the alternate. The Region 8 District Spelling Bee will be held on Feb. 26, followed by the Georgia Association of Educators (GAE) State Spelling Bee on March 18.

The Golden Isles College +
Career Academy held its first Open House for middle and high school students on January 20, and over 250 students (750 attendees including parents!) attended. They met with instructors and local businesses to learn about the skill sets required for the future workforce, and took interactive tours of each pathway presented during the event.

As part of the Brunswick-Golden
Isles Chamber of Commerce’s “Education Day” for its Leadership Glynn 2022 Class, district and school leaders participated in a panel on January 24 to discuss the strengths and challenges the system is facing and how local businesses can support our efforts to educate the future workforce.

CELEBRATING 100 DAYS OF LEARNING How our schools reflected on and celebrated the 100th Day of School.
100 days of school means 100 days smarter! Of all the exciting milestones during the 178-day academic calendar, one of the most confidence building and fun for younger students and teachers alike is, perhaps, the 100th day – the day that signifies being over halfway to the end of the school year. Many of our elementary schools have a special dress-up day to commemorate and celebrate the achievement. Like the little engine that could, the halls seem to swell with a sense of “I think I can, I think I can” (make it to Day 178) when that magical Day 100 crests the hill.
We asked our schools to submit photos of their students’ 100th day of school attire, and they did not disappoint! Can you spot an oldie but goodie?

UPDATES In our continuing efforts to be transparent about school-related coronavirus cases, we have created a COVID-19 Information page on our website. Every Friday, a chart will be added to the site indicating active cases of COVID-19 for staff and students in Glynn County Schools.
Please check back often for updates. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us at healthconcerns@glynn.k12.ga.us. Last Updated 2/4/2022 3:45 p.m.
UPDATE: GCSS to Move to Green Level of Operations on February 7
Glynn County Schools remains committed to taking all necessary precautions and measures to preserve the safety of our students, staff, families and community.
Based on a decline in positive COVID-19 cases in our schools and the system’s current case count percentage under 1%, all schools will operate in the green level of operations on Monday, Feb. 7 (as indicated in our Return to School Framework). This means that masks are strongly encouraged for students and adults inside of school buildings, but they are still required on buses.
We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak and adjust our plans accordingly. We ask that you continue to monitor students before school. Keep students home and contact the school if they have an illness, are waiting on results from a COVID-19 test, have a positive COVID-19 test, or if they have been exposed to someone with COVID-19.
GCSS COVID Report for 2.4.2022 For previous detailed reports, visit www.glynn.k12.ga.us/covid19/
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we work to provide the best instruction for our students in the safest environment possible.

It’s never too early to start teaching healthy habits, and these Altama Elementary kindergarteners are showing us how to stay fit mentally by learning to read and exercising their thinking and cognitive skills.
