Two performances, one world-class offer We believe that opera can transform lives.

That’s why, since 2006, we’ve welcomed over 20,000 students to Glyndebourne for one of our dedicated Performances for Schools.

Often their first taste of opera, it’s an experience like no other: Glyndebourne’s world-famous auditorium filled entirely with students, a special introduction on stage and then all the emotion, spectacle and intensity of a Glyndebourne opera, full-length and fully staged.

OPERA IS FOR EVERYONE Opera is the only art form that has it all: music, movement, drama and design.

It’s full of immense technical skill, crafted with precision and passion.

It’s brilliant as a source of inspiration and learning for those studying performing arts, design and technology.

The themes of the operas and experience of going to the theatre can also be the starting point for projects reaching across the curriculum.

We think our Performances for Schools in 2015 are suitable for all students from Year 4 upwards.

We understand that, for some children, the behaviour expected during a theatre

performance may become overwhelming during their visit. To ensure that all members of the audience enjoy the experience, we provide a relaxed space adjacent to the auditorium in which students can continue to watch the opera via a live link to the stage. LESSONS THAT LAST MORE THAN A DAY On our website you’ll find a number of resources and tailored information about opera, designed to help teachers prepare students for their visit to the theatre.

The experience at Glyndebourne itself has also been tailored with students in mind: the on-stage introduction prepares the audience for what to expect and things to look out for in this production. It is complemented by our specially commissioned Performance for Schools programme, free for each student to take home.

PLAN YOUR VISIT Glyndebourne is in the heart of the Sussex countryside, only 10 miles outside Brighton.

There’s plenty of on-site parking for coaches, and 12 acres of gardens for students to enjoy during their visit.

Nearer the time we’ll send you an email giving you all the practical information you need to make your visit run as smoothly as possible.

To book for any Performance for Schools, complete the enclosed form and return it with payment to Glyndebourne by Wednesday 10 June. Completing the booking form is a request for tickets, not an enquiry.

Given the high demand for these performances, tickets are allocated by ballot.

DON PASQU An old bachelor tries to marry a young man’s girlfriend, and is outwitted by the youngsters, with the help of a dodgy friend.

In Donizetti’s opera, the old man is Don Pasquale, the young man is his nephew, Ernesto, the girlfriend, Norina, and the friend, Dr Malatesta. Don Pasquale doesn’t mind who he marries – just as long as he does marry and disinherits his nephew

goes down to bottom D, and an inconvenient habit of waking up just when the young men are creeping past with a ladder. On one level it’s pure comic opera – funny and tuneful – and on another it’s a great testament to the Enlightenment. And that’s because Mozart completely subscribed to the Enlightenment belief in the essential goodness of human beings. At the last minute, the plot turns on itself and, bucking stereotypes, Mozart reveals that the ‘villain’ of the piece, Pasha Selim, is decent and forgiving.
