I

’m tempted to write ‘we’re back’, but actually we never went away, we simply reduced forces, focused on what we could do, and did it. Can’t come inside? Fine, we’ll perform in the garden. Lovescenes without touch? We’ll use our imagination. 50% audiences? They’ll have to clap louder. But 2022 sees a return to scale. Orchestra, chorus, audience, all back to full size… and opera is again a contact sport. Under the duress of the last couple of years we have come to appreciate the joy of live opera, where performers and audience share the same air space, and the presence of the artist is raw and unfiltered. It’s neither digital nor analogue, it’s flesh and blood, here and now: our musical fictions are the real thing. At Glyndebourne, when faced with obstacles, we often look back, to draw inspiration from the past. Our founders John Christie and Audrey Mildmay were pioneers, and we are trying to live up to their example. Their response to austerity after the second world war is instructive. They didn’t cancel or play safe, they commissioned a new opera from a young Benjamin Britten; and Rudolf Bing and Audrey hatched plans for the first Edinburgh Festival (apparently while touring a wartime production of The Beggar’s Opera directed by John Gielgud). The aim was, as Bing put it, ‘to heal the wounds of war through the languages of the arts’. We are attempting to match their determination and idealism throughout 2022, with more new productions than we have traditionally presented at the Festival – four this year – and seizing the moment to give a big push to our effort to make opera in a more sustainable way. From Festival 2022 all new productions will follow the baseline principles of the UK’s Theatre Green Book – meaning that every component of the design is carefully examined to see what can be made from recycled material, and what can be used again in the future. Our production teams are having to think about how we produce opera in a new way – it's a challenge, but they have all embraced the idea with enthusiasm. The season is big and brave, explores important questions, and brings world-class music and theatre to the stage. We hope our Glyndebourne forebears approve of our ambition, and that you enjoy your return to the full-on, no-holds-barred opera experience! Stephen Langridge, Artistic Director

When survival comes at the cost of another’s life, two lovers are faced with an impossible choice. Melly Still directs a major new staging of Ethel Smyth’s opera – a powerful, cinematic psychodrama set on the Cornish coast. Robin Ticciati conducts.

Michael Grandage’s five-star production of Mozart’s greatest comedy. A sparkling score meets stylish design in this much-loved staging. Giancarlo Andretta and Nicholas Carter conduct.

A new production of opera’s greatest love story. Floris Visser directs an exciting young cast in our first new La bohéme in over 20 years. Jordan de Souza conducts.

Seductive enchantress Alcina can conjure anything she wants – anything, except love. Spectacle and sensation collide in Francesco Micheli’s sumptuous new staging of Handel’s magical fable, originally scheduled for Festival 2020. Jonathan Cohen conducts.

Donizetti’s glittering, sharp-edged comedy cuts to the heart of human nature. Mariame Clément’s mischievous production takes no prisoners, an elegant period staging full of clear-eyed, contemporary wit. Ben Glassberg conducts.

‘The storm is coming…’

The Wreckers ETHEL SMY TH

Would you die for what you believe? In a remote corner of Cornwall, a God-fearing community lives a desperate, precarious existence. Their only hope is the ships that are wrecked on their rocks. But when they start to cause those shipwrecks deliberately, murdering the crew for profit, it tears the villagers apart, setting in motion a tragedy that kills two of their own. This powerful, psychological drama of ‘wrecking, religion and love’ was the pinnacle of Ethel Smyth’s career – a work admired by Mahler and praised by Sir Thomas Beecham as a ‘masterpiece’. With its sweeping musical soundscapes, passionate central love story, and radical interrogation of fear, hypocrisy and mob violence, it’s not only the missing link in the history of English opera – an ancestor to Britten’s Peter Grimes – but a compelling piece of theatre, whose heroine is a mirror of her fascinating, unorthodox creator. Directed by Melly Still, this new production will be the first major, professional staging in our lifetime, and the first opportunity to hear the opera as Smyth intended, with its original French libretto. Glyndebourne’s music director Robin Ticciati conducts.

‘If you want to dance, Count, I’ll play the tune’

Le nozze di Figaro WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART

One wedding; one marriage on the rocks; one scheme; one day.

A revival of the Festival 2012 production Sung in Italian with English supertitles

When a womanising aristocrat tries to seduce his valet’s pretty young fiancée, his wife and servants conspire to teach him a lesson in fidelity he’ll never forget. Plots are hatched, promises made (and broken) and disguises donned, as Mozart’s ‘mad day’ unfolds.

Conductor................................Giancarlo Andretta .......................................... Nicholas Carter 26, 30 June; 7, 10, 13, 16 July Director....................................Michael Grandage Designer..................................Christopher Oram Movement Director................. Ben Wright Lighting Designer....................Paule Constable

A revolutionary comedy in every sense, Mozart and Da Ponte’s adaptation of Beaumarchais’ banned 1778 play about warring masters and servants takes a topical satire and broadens it into a deeply human drama. The battle between both classes and sexes remains sharply bladed but the characters themselves are rounded into feeling by some of Mozart’s most sparkling music, creating fallible and all too familiar personalities. Director Michael Grandage updates the action to the dying days of Spain’s Franco regime. Giancarlo Andretta and Nicholas Carter conduct.

‘To be alone in winter is a terrible thing’

La bohème GIACOMO PUCCINI

Sometimes love just isn’t enough. When seamstress Mimì meets the struggling writer Rodolfo they are instantly drawn together. But while Paris is a magical city of love, it’s also a very real place of hardship as the two young Bohemians and their friends soon discover, when not just jealousy but poverty and sickness tear them apart. In La bohème Puccini created an opera in which ordinary people are elevated to the level of the extraordinary, the tragic, the timeless – transformed by a score that has seduced generations of audiences. Conversational and familiar, atmospheric and emotionally amplified, La bohème paints the complexity of human relationships in all their many shades, framing them with wonderfully vivid, bustling scenes of Parisian life. Comedy and tragedy are woven tightly together in an irresistible flow of melody and drama. Floris Visser directs an exciting young cast in Glyndebourne’s first new La bohème for over 20 years. Jordan de Souza conducts.

Alcina

GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL

Seductive enchantress Alcina can conjure anything she wants – anything, except love.

A new production for Festival 2022 Sung in Italian with English supertitles

Alcina rules over an enchanted island, its trees, rocks and animals – all the bewitched forms of her discarded lovers. But Ruggiero is different. Alcina has fallen in love with him. Can love perform the ultimate enchantment and transform Alcina herself? Or, faced with her lover’s desertion, will she once again choose vengeance and violence?

Conductor................................Jonathan Cohen .......................................... David Bates 19 August Director....................................Francesco Micheli Set Designer.............................Edoardo Sanchi Costume Designer....................Alessio Rosati Choreographer.........................Mike Ashcroft Lighting Designer....................Bruno Poet

A son searching for his father; a woman searching for her fiancé; an enchantress searching for truth: Handel’s last and greatest ‘magic’ opera is an exuberant fantasy full of illusion and wizardry, but it’s also a probing psychological portrait of love in all its forms. In Alcina herself Handel creates one of the most complex and compelling heroines of his career – at once witch and woman, villain and victim. Director Francesco Micheli brings style and sumptuous excess to Glyndebourne’s first ever staging, conducted by Jonathan Cohen.

‘Little does Don Pasquale know the tempest that is about to break over his head…’

Don Pasquale GAETANO DONIZET TI

Happy wife, happy life. Miserly old bachelor Don Pasquale vows to get married and cut his nephew Ernesto out of his will. But Ernesto and his beloved Norina set a trap, producing the perfect young wife who’ll make Don Pasquale's life such a misery that he’ll do anything to be rid of her… Donizetti’s ‘most Mozartean’ opera is the climax of a whole career – an uproarious domestic comedy that displays as much invention and sophistication as any of his mature tragedies. Cynical scheming meets true love in an intrigue that’s as tightly crafted as its score. Full of sparkling solo numbers and dazzling ensembles, this fast-paced farce tumbles from laughter to love and back again in a second. There’s plenty of musical sweetness, but also a sharp edge to a comedy that cuts to the heart of human nature. Mariame Clément’s elegant production returns, conducted by Ben Glassberg.

‘No sir, you will command me no more...’ DOUBLE BILL

La voix humaine Les mamelles de Tirésias

FRANCIS POULENC

A woman on the brink of ending it all; another just beginning.

A new production for Festival 2022 Sung in French with English supertitles

Director Laurent Pelly joins conductor Robin Ticciati for a French double bill that opens with tragic heartbreak and ends with a riotous, surreal comedy.

Conductor................................Robin Ticciati Director....................................Laurent Pelly Set Designer.............................Caroline Ginet Costume Designer....................Laurent Pelly in collaboration with Jean-Jacques Delmotte Lighting Designer....................Urs Schönebaum

Alone in her apartment, a woman talks to her former lover on the telephone. She teases, flirts, promises, lies and pleads. Finally, telling him again and again that she loves him, she drops the receiver… Poulenc’s La voix humaine is opera distilled down to its essence: a musical monologue of searing intensity. Frustrated with her life as a housewife, Thérèse transforms herself into a man and heads out into the world, leaving her husband at home to take care of the baby-making. Exploding with musical invention, combining everything from patter songs to Broadway numbers, chorales and lyrical arias, Poulenc’s Les mamelles de Tirésias is a giddy romp of an opera that throws questions of politics, gender and society up into the air and watches them shatter into hundreds of glittering pieces.

cast includes la voix humaine Elle...........................................Stéphanie d’Oustrac les mamelles de tirésias Theatre Director / Gendarme...Lionel Lhote Thérèse / Fortune Teller............Elsa Benoit The Husband...........................Régis Mengus Monsieur Lacouf......................François Piolino Monsieur Presto......................Christophe Gay The Parisian Journalist...........Loïc Félix The Newspaper Woman...........Julie Pasturaud London Philharmonic Orchestra The Glyndebourne Chorus Musical editions: La voix humaine - Ricordi Paris Les mamelles de Tirésias - Édition Heugel Wise Music Group

Through the Tour we reach out to audiences beyond Sussex, taking live, world-class performances to theatres across England. Through our Learning & Engagement programme, we work with local communities to open up opera for people who might not have an opportunity to engage with this transformative art form. Following its initial Glyndebourne run in October, the Tour visits Canterbury, Milton Keynes, Norwich and Liverpool. On the road we’ll be showcasing Don Pasquale and

Pay the Piper February 2022 In February 2022, Glyndebourne will present the world premiere of Pay the Piper, a brand new youth opera. Composers Anna Appleby, Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade, Cecilia Livingston and Ailie Robertson have teamed up with librettist Hazel Gould and designer Joanna Parker to create a reimagining of the Pied Piper of Hamelin story. The opera will be performed by approximately 70 young people from Glyndebourne Youth Opera, alongside a selection of professional singers, with conductors Johann Stuckenbruck and Ashley Beauchamp working with the Psappha ensemble, specialists in the performance of work by living composers.
