Periodontitis, or gum disease, affects more than 47% of adults over the age of 30

Globally, it is the eleventh most common disease in the world.

In Spain, 8 million adults suffer from this disease.

- Gingivitis, also known as periodontal disease, is caused by bacterial growth.

- It is usually characterized by swelling and bleeding of the gums. The gums may be irritated, but the teeth are still rmly in place.

- In the early stages, there is no permanent damage. With proper treatment, gingivitis can be reversed. If gingivitis is left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis.

Poor oral hygiene leads to gingivitis and, subsequently, periodontitis. Cigarettes, Alcohol and poor oral hygiene cause Periodontitis. Drugs cause rapid loss of teeth and bad breath

What happens in your mouth?

The gums begin to recede from the teeth, forming pockets. This can cause loose teeth. If gums recede far enough, teeth may fall out.

Some of the causes

- Smoking and Tobacco Use

- Poor Oral Hygiene

- Stress

- Hormonal Changes: Roughly 60 to 75 percent of pregnant women, include pregnancy, menses, puberty, and menopause.

- Nutritional Deficiencies

- Medications and Diseases: Cancer, diabetes, and HIV make it difficult to fight off infections, including gingivitis.

Symptom

- Another symptom that occurs with periodontitis is persistent halitosis.

Treatment

- Treatment for gum disease includes scaling and root-planing. In addition, medications may be prescribed, such as antibiotic tablets and topical gels.

If the treatments are not effective, surgery is resorted to.

If these treatments are not e ective, surgery may be required. Flap surgery, bone grafts, or tissue grafts may be suggested.

Flap surgery

To reconstruct a part of the body that has been damaged or removed due to trauma, cancer or infection.

Bone graft

Is a surgical procedure that replaces missing bone.

Tissue graft

Healthy skin, taken from one part of the body and used to replace.
