2025 Season Brochure

The AR T OF maKingAR T

Each show you see on our stage is the tip of a great pyramid, resting on the shoulders of hundreds of artists and skilled craftspersons. Everyone who has stepped into our theater over the past half-century has witnessed this delicate balancing act — and been changed by it.

These often-unseen magicians are the very people we celebrate this season: the performers, dreamers, and creators whose annual alchemy takes our breath away. Lavishing untold care and countless hours on every detail and nuance, their finished work is a miracle of collaboration.

One of those wizards is John Conklin, this season's set designer; to him, Glimmerglass is "home to a family of dedicated professionals who come together to learn from each other, from the operas we produce, and from the space itself." That space will be memorably transformed this season under his direction as we journey into the worlds of a singer, a painter, a composer, and a writer.

What makes an artist tick? What inspires them? What goes on behind the scenes before the curtain rises?

THE 2025 FESTIVAL IS MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE SUPPORT OF THE FOLLOWING SEASON SPONSORS:

MUSIC | Giacomo Puccini

LIBRETTO | Luigi Illica & Giuseppe Giacosa

July 11–August 16, 2025

Tosca, a tempestuous diva, lives for art — and for love. When Cavaradossi, her lover and a revolutionary painter, is targeted by Rome’s corrupt chief of police, Tosca is determined to save him — but at what price? Puccini’s lush score, written on the heels of La bohème, contrasts moments of exquisite tenderness with heartstopping sonic spectacle.

Presented in Italian with projected English text. Approx. running time: 2 hours, 25 minutes (including 25-minute intermission)

“Since its premiere in 1900, Tosca, that "shabby little shocker" (according to musicologist Joseph Kerman), has become one of the most vibrant operas in the entire repertoire. It has served as a vehicle for some of opera's greatest singers and continues to enthrall with Puccini's glorious music and timeless themes of justice and self-sacrifice. I am thrilled to be on the podium at Glimmerglass this summer as we bring this true "shocker" to the Glimmerglass stage.”

BOOK | James Lapine

July 12–August 17, 2025

Breaking new ground for what musical theater could express, Sunday in the Park with George is a dazzling exploration of life, love, and the relentless drive to create. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece follows Georges Seurat in 1884 as he paints his magnum opus, then jumps forward in time to an imagined great-grandson of Seurat who is navigating his own creative struggles. With its radiant, transcendent score, this 10-time Tony-nominated musical builds to one of the most breathtaking finales in Broadway history. Bold and heartfelt, Sunday invites us to see the world — and each other — with fresh eyes.

This production was licensed by Music Theatre International.

Presented in English with projected English text. Approx. running time: 2 hours, 49 minutes (including 25-minute intermission)

“Sunday invites us into the most delicate and euphoric moments in the life of an artist. It is a thrill to present this masterwork in all of its depth, complexity, and breathtaking beauty on the operatic stage.”

MUSIC | Derek Bermel

LIBRETTO | Sandra Cisneros & Derek Bermel

July 18–August 16, 2025

The House on Mango Street, a coming-of-age classic, has been acclaimed by critics, beloved by readers of all ages, taught in schools and universities alike, and translated worldwide. Novelist Sandra Cisneros, winner of the PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature, has teamed up with Grammy-nominated composer Derek Bermel for an opera inspired by her classic book, which unfolds in a series of episodes seen through the eyes of a young girl, Esperanza. Through a series of interactions, which range from fascinating to funny to frightening, she comes to understand that storytelling is the medicine she can offer her community — and herself.

Presented in English and Spanish with projected English text. Approx. running time: 2 hours, 29 minutes (including 25-minute intermission)

“For each woman who has succeeded in history, there are thousands who were not allowed to. Their voices have been censured. It takes a child with hope, Esperanza, to dream, reach, and achieve her dreams. Opera needs to tell the untold stories of our time, our struggles: to jump out of its expected window and fly.” —Chía Patiño, Director

July

19–August 15, 2025

A debonair stranger, Nick Shadow, appears to Tom Rakewell with an irresistible proposition: the chance to rewrite his destiny. As the devilish Nick conjures a series of tempting adventures for Tom, Anne Trulove fights for Tom's salvation. Stravinsky and Auden's brilliant reimagining of the traditions of Handel, Mozart, and Rossini sparkles with elegant vocal lines, vibrant orchestrations, and lively dance rhythms. Standing as Stravinsky's largest and most ambitious creation, The Rake’s Progress is a groundbreaking blend of wit, drama, and style.

Presented in English with projected English text. Approx. running time: 2 hours, 43 minutes (including 25-minute intermission)

“As someone with a background in dance, I’ve always been inspired by Stravinsky’s music for dance, from Rite of Spring to his many collaborations with Balanchine. Likewise, his score for The Rake’s Progress is full of movement. It is such a perfect piece for the ensemble sensibility we have developed at Glimmerglass — I can’t wait to work with the Young Artists to create the many worlds of this energetic morality tale.” —Eric Sean Fogel, Director

Ten years later, the annual youth opera has become a beloved tradition, and the operas commissioned by Glimmerglass have provided opportunities for young people across the country to get first-hand opera experience.
