The 2022 Festival was a particularly special season for the company—with a happy return to our beloved Alice Busch Opera Theater, and a poignant farewell to Artistic & General Director Francesca Zambello after a remarkable twelve-year tenure.

Glimmerglass presented a record seven productions on its mainstage this year, opening with the first of its four anchor shows, the long-awaited production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, which had been originally slated for 2020. A vibrant Carmen followed, directed by acclaimed mezzo-soprano (and legendary Carmen herself) Denyce Graves. The company was honored to present three world premieres this summer: Tenor Overboard, a new work by acclaimed playwright Ken Ludwig featuring some of Rossini’s greatest music; Holy Ground by Damien Geter and Lila Palmer in a thought-provoking double bill with Kamala Sankaram and Jerre Dye’s Taking Up Serpents (2018); and our wildly popular youth opera The Jungle Book, also written by Sankaram, with a libretto by Glimmerglass dramaturg Kelley Rourke. The youth opera was more accessible to audiences than ever, thanks to a ticketing initiative sponsored by Betsy and Ed Cohen, which allowed children (12 and under) to attend at no cost. Additionally, the season included an expanded revival of The Passion of Mary Cardwell Dawson, an inspiring play by Sandra Seaton with music by Carlos Simon that originally premiered during the 2021 “Glimmerglass on the Grass” season.

Denyce Graves and Kamala Sankaram served as our Artists in Residence this summer, lending their artistic talents as stage director and composer, respectively, and mentoring a talented group of 37 Young Artists. We were also pleased to see the fruition of our redesigned Summer Internship Program—now Apprenticeship Program—which provided new educational opportunities for a cohort of 58 Apprentices. The 2022 season welcomed 29 budding artists from Cooperstown and beyond to our Youth Ensemble, who were featured in all four mainstage offerings, and most predominantly in The Jungle Book. performances of TheSoundofMusic

Honoring Francesca Zambello

For decades, Glimmerglass has been “on the map” for opera lovers. Opera aficionados have flocked from across the country and even around the world to see adventurous productions, hear established and up-and-coming stars, and encounter repertory that was not being produced anywhere else. From Baroque masterpieces to modern classics, plus forgotten jewels from every era in between, Glimmerglass had made a name for itself by the end of the 20th century, when you could, for instance, see a production of Gluck’s Iphigenie en Tauride, featuring rising stars Bill Burden, Nathan Gunn, and Christine Goerke, directed by none other than Francesca Zambello.

When Francesca returned nearly three decades later to lead the company, she wanted to make sure the entire community — broadly defined — knew that Glimmerglass was not only for the opera aficionado, but for them. One of her first ideas was to rebrand the company as The Glimmerglass Festival. While world-class opera productions have remained the core of the company’s offerings, the festival has provided a number of new entry points, from mainstage productions of classic American musicals to newly commissioned operas for young people, plus a host of other programs — concerts, lectures, second-stage productions — whose short running time and lower price point encourage people to take the first step of engaging with Glimmerglass. After the first taste, they invariably come back for more.

Less visible was Francesca’s stewardship behind the scenes. Glimmerglass rose to international prominence thanks to the leadership of Paul Kellogg, who provided the artistic vision for the company for decades. His retirement left a gap, and by the time Francesca arrived, the company had been on shaky financial and artistic footing for a period of several years. In addition to balancing the budget and revitalizing programming, Francesca was able to realize a number of important projects that would allow the company to continue to make great art in the future, including a year-round scene shop and production office, and a custom-built rehearsal hall.

Francesca has left a lasting legacy at Glimmerglass, and many of the initiatives she founded have become a part of the company’s fabric. Thanks to the leadership of Chair Robert Nelson and the support of many friends in the Glimmerglass family, the Artist in Residence position, along with other community and educational programming, will be funded for seasons to come by the newly established Zambello Gay Tribute Fund (see page 55 for supporters). Francesca and her wife Faith Gay are Honorary Life Trustees, and with their son Jackson (and pups Rome and Rex), plan to stay involved with the company as friends and fans. As of October 2022, Glimmerglass is proud to announce that Francesca has been made Artistic & General Director Emerita, a welldeserved honor.

“...the surprise delight of 2022 was 'Tenor Overboard', a confection devised by playwright Ken Ludwig, Mr. Colaneri, and dramaturge Kelley Rourke in which lesser-known Rossini extracts were repurposed as musical numbers in a new comic script…the music, along with slightly massaged texts, is so wittingly integrated…”

—Heidi Waleson, Wall Street Journal

“The revelation on July 31 was Canadian mezzo Reilly Nelson as Mimi’s sister Gianna, disclosing a superb timbre and technique, plus real comic flair in dialogue.”

“The game young cast played the comedy with aplomb. The standout singer was Keely Futterer as the daffy Jean Harlow-esque actress Angostura, who knocked out the bravura 'Bel raggio lusinghier' from 'Semiramide' (a Joan Sutherland staple) with total command. Mr. Colaneri’s effervescent conducting kept the fun bubbling throughout.”

Homecoming

When audiences arrived at the Alice Busch Opera Theater (ABOT) for the opening of our 2022 season, one of our “favorite things” awaited them on stage: a brown paper package tied up with string. A strip of brown wrapping was peeled away, as if a child tore into a present too early, to peek inside at the alpine setting of The Sound of Music. Though this curtain drop promised to transport us to another place and time, many audience members were simply excited to be back inside our theater, a gift in itself after years apart. For the past two years, Glimmerglass successfully pivoted its operations to meet the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, first by presenting virtual offerings in 2020, then by moving outdoors for “Glimmerglass on the Grass” in 2021. This year, we finally returned to our home theater, inviting everyone inside for a season of massive proportions. We mounted a record seven productions on our one stage, three of which were world premieres. For the first time ever, the youth opera took to the ABOT stage, welcoming a whole new demographic to Glimmerglass.

Putting on a Festival season takes a village. Putting on a fuller season than normal takes even more people, time, and energy. But making our opera house “move-in ready” after nearly three years of dormancy was its own amazing feat.

WELCOME HOME

Working in ABOT is the norm for us, but there were a few challenges to overcome in preparing the theater. “There are routine things that are on a cycle of happening every few years. But nothing happened in the two off-years, so there was more on that list of routine things than usual,” said Abby Rodd, Director of Production.

That laundry list became pretty extensive over time: seating repairs, roofing, plumbing, exterior updates, landscaping, new ticketing software, and more. All of this work came on top of the usual pre-season tasks, like building and painting sets, constructing costumes, and hanging lights. “During the COVID shutdown, we rebuilt the stairs in the balcony,” said Rodd. “They were 30 years old and originally built out of plywood. The hand railings were not very secure anymore. We took the opportunity of not having people in the theater for a while, tore all of that out and rebuilt it in the scene shop. The steps have new LED lighting. The little pink pipe railings were wobbly, and now they’re good for another 30 years or more.”

This year, we returned to full staff strength (no seasonal staff were hired for the summer of 2020, as the company crafted an online season, and for 2021,

34

Glimmerglass hired only half its usual number of employees in order to reduce the risk of COVID spread). Moreover, we launched a new Apprenticeship Program, providing 58 young professionals with educational opportunities while working on our season.

Our volunteers also made their triumphant return to Glimmerglass after two seasons off. House Manager Jackie Boutcher reported that we had 75 volunteer ushers this summer, coming from as far as Ohio, North Carolina, and even Canada. Many of our volunteers are locals, and some have been with Glimmerglass since its first performances at Cooperstown High School.

Whether you were a long-time volunteer or a fresh face to Glimmerglass, everyone got to experience something new this summer. After years of performing off-campus, the youth opera finally came “home” to the opera house. Ushers guided multitudes of children to their seats — some came in groups of 50 or more! Backstage, our crews worked as they would for any other show at the Festival.

“From our perspective, it is very similar,” said Production Coordinator Wyatt Nyman. “The scope isn’t

necessarily as large, but there are still costumes for every performer. It still has scenery. It still has lighting. It is a process, and it takes just as many people to get The Jungle Book ready as it did for The Sound of Music.”

“THE BIRDHOUSE”

If our youth performers needed inspiration for their animal characters, they didn’t need to look very far. During our theatrical hiatus, many animals made themselves at home at the Festival.

Besides the typical animal “friends” we make each summer (like birds, bugs, and the occasional bat), a family of skunks took up residence under the deck on the side of the theater, becoming the mascots for many of our tech crews. Muskrats continued to expand the fire pond in front of the theater by digging holes in the shoreline. Some staff may have spotted a fisher cat across the street in our picnic area. But perhaps the most surprising animal to call Glimmerglass home was a turtle found inside the theater.

This year’s animal encounters were just one signal of a changing environment that will affect the Festival for years to come.

35

“Trying to combat the temperature inside the theater has been more of a struggle this year,” remarked Operations Manager Christian Shaefer. For three performances this summer, we left part of the theater’s retractable walls open due to heat — a very rare occurrence. (Not since 2016, rumor has it.)

The walls themselves are in need of repair, but after 30 years of use, the parts to fix it are hard to find or to make. Though the walls are motorized, our crews manually operated the walls to create custom configurations that could cool the theater without creating a dangerous backdraft. As Shaefer explained, “The actors have the weight of approximately two to three elephants flying above their head at any given time, so we need to ensure their safety first.”

The tender balance of safety and comfort must be considered as we look to the future of our theater and our Festival.

HOME SWEET HOME

The world changed drastically in the three years our theater was closed, but some things remained, such as the can-do spirit that pervades the Festival atmosphere.

“I think the success of the season speaks to the caliber of leadership that we have and their incredible skill and expertise,” said Nyman. “To get everybody onto the same page, onto the same team, and unite under the common purpose of creating this incredible season, takes an incredible amount of work. I think, at the end of the day, everyone here has a tremendous amount to be proud of.”

36

THE LADY JULIET TADGELL GARDEN

This past August, the Board of Trustees of The Glimmerglass Festival formally dedicated the newly updated courtyard adjacent to the theater as The Lady Juliet Tadgell Garden. Lady Juliet, a longtime summer resident of the Cooperstown community, is an Honorary Life Trustee of the Festival and has been an ardent supporter of the company since 1983.

The Alice Busch Opera Theater was designed as a visual reflection of its natural surroundings, and this idea was retained in the new garden design by award-winning landscape

and partner with the Washington, DC-based firm Oehme, van Sweden. Mary Leonard, of Carefree Gardens in Cooperstown, brought the design to life, with ground assistance from Glimmerglass Festival Facilities Manager Leon Roseboom and Concessions Manager/Operations Assistant Lizzy Mott. The project received generous support through a major grant from New York State/Empire State Development.

Glimmerglass will remain forever grateful to Lady Juliet and her husband, Dr. Christopher Tadgell, and The Lady Juliet Tadgell Garden will serve as a happy reminder of their many years of friendship.

Launched in 1988, the Glimmerglass Young Artists Program (YAP) has grown to become one of the leading training programs in the industry for singers, conductors, directors, pianists, and dancers at the early stages of their careers. GLIMMERGLASS APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

The Glimmerglass Festival was pleased to unveil a new, expanded version of its longstanding Summer Internship Program for 2022: the Glimmerglass Apprenticeship Program. Thanks to a generous, multiyear match challenge in support of this initiative from Denise Littlefield Sobel, the company was able to include more built-in education opportunities (in addition to experience gained on the job), and increase pay from a weekly stipend to an hourly rate equal to New York State minimum wage, with overtime eligibility.

The issue of pay equity for Apprentices was highlighted by staff during Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion sessions in 2021, and the company learned that its previous pay structure had been a major financial barrier for many applicants in past seasons. These changes have had a tremendous impact for the inaugural 2022 cohort of Apprentices.

“It is safe to say that without the benefits of the apprenticeship program, I would not have been able to take this position. At this point in my life and career, it would not be feasible to take an unpaid internship. I am so grateful to have been given the resources to take on this position, and to know that the work I was doing was being compensated for its value. The availability of benefits within the apprenticeship program is just another way in which Glimmerglass has shown their dedication to improving the opera industry. By creating a program with benefits, they allow people from a broader range of backgrounds to apply and have these career-shaping experiences. Glimmerglass is no stranger to setting standards in this industry, and I know that their apprenticeship program will serve as a strong example to their peer organizations. By far, my favorite part of apprenticing at Glimmerglass was all of the amazing people that I encountered throughout the summer. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with a group of people who I loved spending time with, but who were also able to guide and support me as I navigated my work. I have learned so much and look forward to maintaining the connections that I have made.”

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

Since 2011, Glimmerglass has engaged at least one annual Artist in Residence—a renowned individual from the field of music, who becomes immersed in the life of the Festival, appears in or is involved with seasonal repertoire and special programs, and serves as a mentor to the Young Artists.

The 2022 season welcomed two Artists in Residence: acclaimed mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves and composer Kamala Sankaram.

A legendary portrayer of the eponymous role, Graves made her Glimmerglass directorial debut with Carmen.

“For me, the chance to direct has been an enormous privilege. I’ve had so much fun, way more fun than I ever had singing. I’ve had such a great time conceiving the production. It’s an incredible gift.” – Denyce Graves

Two of Sankaram’s works were featured in the 2022 Festival: Taking Up Serpents and the world premiere youth opera, The Jungle Book.

“I look at [The Jungle Book] as an opportunity to introduce young musicians to Hindustani (Northern Indian) and Carnatic (Southern Indian) music, as well as introducing them to opera. It is my hope that borrowing equally from the traditions of Indian and European classical music will not only serve to create a sense of place within the opera, but will leave our young artists with a greater sense of the world and the commonalities shared between cultures.” –

EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION (EDI)

Staffing. Mykai Eastman was hired as Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Facilitator, replacing Jessica Fuller Jahn, who had been serving as Advisor to the EDI Committee on an interim basis since 2020. Mykai is a playwright and stage director based in Denver, Colorado, who previously served seasonal positions with the company as Communications Associate and an Intern in Production. He oversees the company’s EDI Committee work and EDI seminar/training planning.

Workshops and Training. Full-time staff at Glimmerglass completed training seminars with artEquity, centered on antiracist approaches to recruitment and hiring in the arts. These sessions inspired a number of changes noted in “Hiring” below. The company also welcomed back Seena Hodges of The Woke Coach, for summer trainings with full-time and seasonal staff through her program From Ally to Accomplice®, and also to lead “Brave Spaces” for BIPOC staff and artists to discuss their experiences on campus and in the community. Glimmerglass fulltime staff will continue to take seminars with Seena throughout the 2022/23 calendar years.

Hiring. In addition to furthering pay equity with changes to the Apprenticeship Program, Glimmerglass also made adjustments to the application and hiring process for Apprentices and other staff positions. All applicants submit materials through the same online portal instead of sending resumes and cover letters to individual hiring managers. This ensures consistency in the way materials are handled and distributed to the appropriate staff. Additionally, designated hiring managers were selected to finalize hiring, begin the onboarding process, and be a specific point person for answering questions in a uniform way. The Recruitment and Hiring EDI Working Group also created and distributed guides for staff involved in the interview and hiring process, including an interview template with three universal questions, as well as an advisory guide about what questions to avoid, to prevent potential, unintended discrimination. This was developed with the input of an HR Representative from PayChex, the company’s Payroll Services provider. Standard templates have also been created for all communication with candidates (ex: application receipt, position offer letter, and multiple rejection letter templates). The onboarding paperwork was also reevaluated and split into two forms. Once hired, staff must complete the “Personal Information Form” (PIF), with non-sensitive questions, which can be accessed by all hiring managers; and the “Health & Safety Form” (HSF), with sensitive questions, which is only accessible by the company’s Executive Director, Director of Accounting, and safety team (2 people).

IN THE COMMUNITY

123 students, plus 10 chaperones, attended performances of The Sound of Music and Carmen. Their visits to the Festival also included pre-show lunches with guest speakers Francesca Zambello, Joel Morain (A/V Coordinator), Maestro Joseph Colaneri (Music Director), and incoming Artistic & General Director Robert Ainsley (photo left). Local members of the Board of Trustees, along with Chair Robert Nelson, greeted the group on both occasions. Glimmerglass is grateful to the Honorable Joan Shkane and the following partners for making this program possible: Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, M&T Bank/Partner's Trust Bank Charitable Fund, Utica National Insurance Company, Birnie Bus Company, Jimmy John's in Utica, and Oneida County Youth Bureau.

Students from Morris, NY, enjoyed a picnic lunch before attending a performance of The Sound of Music, generously sponsored by Gemma Hall.

42
Glimmerglass dramaturg and The Jungle Book librettist Kelley Rourke hosted a morning of crafts (coloring pages and wolf ears) and storytelling for local children at the Cooperstown Library. Rourke read the Glimmerglasscommissioned children’s book version of The Jungle Book, featuring the opera’s libretto alongside illustrations by Tharanga Goonetilleke (which inspired the production design seen onstage).
43
The Festival presented a Springfield Appreciation Concert, with all proceeds benefiting the Springfield Center 4th of July Parade, in which Glimmerglass staff and volunteers marched with a special float built by members of our Production team.

The Guild of The Glimmerglass Festival is a dedicated corps of volunteers who support the company in numerous ways:

116 students (from 16 different school districts), family members, and school chaperones attended “Day at the Festival” on August 4, organized by the Guild — including free balcony seats to The Jungle Book; a pre-performance talk with composer Kamala Sankaram and librettist Kelley Rourke; a bagged lunch prepared by Guild volunteers; and educational materials prepared by library educator Rhonda King and vocal music educator Mark Bunce.

3 “changeover dinners” on two-show Saturdays (August 6, 13, 20) — providing meals for 120 Young Artists, Apprentices, and staff between the afternoon and evening performances.

$25,000 raised at the annual Guild Gala, in support of the Festival.

Guild members also provided welcome bags for Young Artists, assisted at picnics, ushered, organized the “Talking Opera” series, and hosted a dinner at the Cooperstown Country Club.

Remembering Honorary Life Trustee, Mrs. John R. Hupper (Joyce)

This fall, the Board and staff of the Glimmerglass Festival were deeply saddened to lose our long-standing and dear friend, Joyce Hupper.

A life-long devotee of the arts who understood and valued the importance of cultural philanthropy, Joyce funneled her personal love of opera into her role as a trustee of The Glimmerglass Festival over the past 25 years. She brought steadfast, rational logic to Board deliberations and extensive knowledge of repertory to discussions about proposed seasons.

Joyce spoke often about the importance of board members serving as ambassadors for the Festival. She shared her enthusiasm for Glimmerglass’ approach to productions and programming with her many distinguished New York City friends, and introduced them to the Festival during the season and as her guests at our annual Gala.

Always looking for more ways to help, Joyce generously donated her center box at the Metropolitan Opera to Glimmerglass for auctions, and perpetually strove to “do more” for the company at the end of each fiscal year, adding to her already generous annual contributions.

During her tenure as a trustee, Joyce cared deeply about keeping alive the legacy and accomplishments of past Glimmerglass trustees — such as Gretchen Nicholas, Katharine Cary and Lyn Chase — whose approach to leadership Joyce spoke of often and whose contributions were pivotal to the evolutionary growth of the company during the 1990s.

Joyce has passed on her zeal and interest in Glimmerglass and its future to her daughter, Gail, and son-inlaw, William Wood, who accompanied her on many visits to the Festival.

In appreciation of Joyce’s exceptional range of contributions to the company, this past year, the Board of Trustees of The Glimmerglass Festival named Joyce an Honorary Life Trustee, the most distinguished recognition given by the company.

Joyce always wanted to be familiarly and warmly addressed by her first name, while valuing the more formal “Mrs. John R. Hupper” on correspondence and listings. Along with her beautiful partnership with her husband, Joyce sallied forth with alacrity for causes that were personally important to her, often noting, “We support many things together…and we have our own projects.” We are forever grateful that one of her causes was Glimmerglass. She will be greatly missed.

IN MEMORIAM:
48

Remembering Honorary Life Trustee Bob Schlather

In May, the Glimmerglass Festival sadly lost its longest-standing trustee, Robert S. Schlather. Bob was involved in a dizzying array of groups and causes encompassing healthcare, human services, education, arts, historical associations, Rotary — basically, anything established for the betterment of the greater Cooperstown community. And it was with compassion, dedication, gentleness and a legendary and comforting sense of humor that Bob jumped into his volunteer roles as advisor, advocate, contributor and leader.

The Glimmerglass Festival was incredibly fortunate to be a keystone cause of Bob’s. He and his wife, Karen, first became involved as volunteers and supporters in 1979, when the Opera was still in its infancy. By 1984 he was elected to the Board and during his nearly 40 years as a Trustee, Bob served as: Treasurer for seven, Vice President of Personnel for four, Vice President of Legal Affairs, Chairman of the Audit Committee, an At-Large member of the Executive Committee, and importantly, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for an impressive six years — in tandem with Peter Duchin as his President, with whom he then swapped the Presidency and Chairmanship positions for a year.

Overall, Bob gave thousands of hours to the company as it grew to achieve national and international renown. He helped Glimmerglass move from its original home in the Cooperstown High School to the Alice Busch Opera Theater. He found, secured, negotiated and helped fund the Festival’s much-needed warehouse and rehearsal hall in the Town of Warren, and made possible a gift of property in Richfield Springs to help with its daunting summer housing needs. Every spring, Bob would ask which of the upcoming summer’s Festival dates were undersold and would then help fill those seats through a win-win invention of his own by hosting Bassett Healthcare nights, through which hospital employees would enjoy the perks of an evening at the Opera, replete with a pre-curtain party, underwritten by his law firm, Schlather & Birch.

Just this past February, in recognition of his extraordinary service and exceptional contributions, the Board of Trustees of The Glimmerglass Festival named Bob an Honorary Life Trustee, its highest honor. Glimmerglass Festival Artistic & General Director, Francesca Zambello, expressed the feelings of the entire company: “We are extremely grateful that Glimmerglass was a beneficiary of Bob’s and his family’s passion for our work and mission, which they expressed with vigor, intelligence, talent, creativity, kindness, generosity and, most importantly, joy.”

GIFTS TO GLIMMERGLASS

The Glimmerglass experience is made possible through the generosity of donors who share our commitment to the development of emerging talent, imaginative productions, and stimulating cultural and educational programs. We take this opportunity to thank and recognize those individuals who have made gifts of $100 or more to The Glimmerglass Festival during our 2022 fiscal year (October 1, 2021-September 30, 2022). Space limitations do not permit us to list contributions under $100, but to these good friends and all of our supporters we extend our most sincere gratitude.

To learn more about privileges and benefits associated with giving to Glimmerglass – as well as designated opportunities, such as sponsoring a production, a principal singer, an apprentice, a second stage program, an education project or a Young Artist – please call The Glimmerglass Festival Development Department at (607) 547-0700, ext. 238 or ext. 212.

YOUNG ARTIST SPONSORSHIPS

The renowned Glimmerglass Young Artists and Apprenticeship Programs bring exceptional emerging young singers, dancers, conductors, stage directors, coach/accompanists, production talent, craftspeople and arts administrators together for three months each season to study and gain professional experience in the creative and demanding atmosphere of the Festival. This year 37 Young Artists and 58 Apprentices were selected from approximately 1,600 applicants, a testimony to the quality and reputation of these programs.

Inspiration for these targeted donations began with endowment gifts from Allen and Judy Freedman, and through the establishment of the Rona Cader Rosenbaum Master Class Fund, which underwrites annual visits from prominent singers and directors who work with Young Artists on a range of skills.

The Glimmerglass Apprenticeship Program—previously known as the Summer Internship Program—has been expanded to include more built-in educational opportunities in addition to the experience Apprentices gain on the job. This expansion was made possible through the generosity of Denise Littlefield Sobel, who provided a multi-year match challenge in support of the program.

Benefactors who designate their annual gifts in support of an individual Young Artist or Apprentice personally get to know the artist or apprentice they are supporting, following their careers, and developing relationships that can often last a lifetime. To learn more about these programs or sponsorships, please contact the Glimmerglass Development office at (607) 547-0700 ext. 238 or 212.

The Goodyear Society honors individuals and families who have made a gift to Glimmerglass through their will or estate to perpetuate the Festival and its programs. The Society is named after Tom Goodyear, one of our founders, and his mother, Jeannette Bissell Goodyear, both passionate opera fans whose gift of farmland was transformed into the Festival theater and campus we enjoy today. If you have already included Glimmerglass in your plans, please let us know so that we may thank you and invite you to become a member of this special group of supporters.

For more information about how you can support The Glimmerglass Festival through a planned gift, please contact Caryn Reeves, Director of Development, at (607) 547-0700, ext. 238.

THE GOODYEAR SOCIETY 63

Welcoming Robert Ainsley

Prior to coming to Glimmerglass, Ainsley served as the Director of the Washington National Opera’s Cafritz Young Artists Program and the American Opera Initiative, where he commissioned, developed, and premiered more than 30 new operas, songs, and more by leading artists including Jerre Dye, A.M. Homes, David Henry Hwang, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Missy Mazzoli, Royce Vavrek, Huang Ruo, Kamala Sankaram, Carlos Simon, Sandra Seaton, and others. Ainsley was Associate Music Director at Portland Opera, Head of Music Staff and Chorus Master at Minnesota Opera and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, a guest Chorus Master at English National Opera, and Co-Founder and Principal Conductor of the Greenwich Music Festival. He is an alumnus of the University of Cambridge, Mannes College of Music, and the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera.

He has appeared as a pianist, administrator and speaker with a variety of prominent institutions, including the White House, Supreme Court, Smithsonian Museums, National Gallery, Kennedy Center Honors, Wolf Trap National Park, Met Stars Live in Concert, embassies and diplomatic residences.

“I am honored to be leading this great institution into its 50th season and beyond,” Ainsley said. “Glimmerglass, with its idyllic location and wide-ranging artistic output of the highest quality, has always been a dream company for me. I have long admired its deep commitments to community, the next generation, and inclusive programming representing the diversity of today’s America. The stories we tell bind us together, spread joy, and foster understanding. I want Glimmerglass to continue making unforgettable memories for everyone it touches in an environment where all feel empowered to do their best work.”

Robert Ainsley joins The Glimmerglass Festival as Artistic & General Director.
