“At least 573,500 registered refugees and asylum seekers were present in Kenya by the end of 2022, with 85% displaced from Somalia and South Sudan. The majority has taken shelter in Dadaab and Kakuma camps, respectively located in Garissa and Turkana counties, both arid areas affected by the drought”

Today, there are more internally displaced people (IDP) in the world than at any point before World War II. These people are driven from their homes by civil war, prosecution, environmental disasters or economic calamity. According to The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) there are more than 108 million people displaced worldwide, many of whom are children. The civil war in South Sudan alone has displaced 14 million children in need of humanitarian support. These people have been stripped of their statehood, material possessions, and even their loved ones. This is a growing problem for refugee camps around the world. “Camp’’ Kakuma in North Kenya had a population of 196,666 at the end of 2020, surpassing its population ceiling by nearly 70,000 people. Most of these camps, like Kakuma, were designed as temporary facilities. With more demand than ever many have grown into full fledged cities, with complex economies and governmental systems. Refugee camps and their inhabitants are the pinnacle of human suffering; the sheer size of these communities testifies to the severity of forced displacement around the world. Yet, they can also be places of hope, and sanctuary. A stepping stone towards a better life free of conflict and violence.

Thesis Proposal

With the need for new refugee encampment developments on the rise. It is clear we have a problem. These humanitarian issues weigh heavy on my heart and I feel there’s an opportunity to help. Over the last year, I have been developing plans to start a short term rental business with a close friend of mine. We’ve been working on energy efficient homes built out of recycled 20’ and 40’ shipping containers that are readily available all around the world.

People are more focused on travel than ever. My Idea is to tap into that market to help fund an organization that can develop refugee camps in places that desperately need the help. The short term rental we design, build and rent here at home will also act as the “guinea pig” if you will. In other words it will enable me to develop and systemize the best way to streamline the process of these efficient dwellings while simultaneously funding the overall goal of encampment development. These container homes will need to be well insulated, off grid, and clean. Land development is an essential key to the process. Finding solutions for water sanitation, climate, sewage removal, and power are essential. Other problems like overcrowding, and mental health need much thought as well.

As a designer and humanitarian advocate I find this to be a worthy issue in our world today. My plan for these issues is insightful and calculated. I also have a team of support ready to get things moving in the right direction. After seeing what is happening around the globe I feel lucky to live where I am safe from conflicts. What I feel most inspired by is that I believe that we’re going to change the world.

The Pines Convention center and conservatory is an upscale renovation to the Sahrs Sudden service building and lot in Fargo North Dakota. Based on the Case Studies done earlier in this project, the programing elements have been chosen very carefully to match design aspects that I found appealing.

After my research phase, I used autoCAD to draft a detailed plan of my site. Programming, Plant Placement, Grading, and Architectural Elements are key for me in this step. In this case my client is building a research and convention center using the existing Sahrs Sudden Service Center

After careful drafting, for this design, I used Rhino to digitally model my site. In this design phase I use my line work and calculations to model Grading systems, Decking, Hardscapes and the converted convention center itself.

The Pines Convention center and conservatory is an upscale renovation to the Sahrs Sudden service building and lot in Fargo North Dakota. Based on the case studies done earlier in this project, the programing elements have been chosen very carefully to match design aspects that I found appealing. Please reference my case study board for more information. Below is a rendered master plan with each programing element labeled. Below I have four perspective views showing how people might use my space.

With a complete 3d model file I can now use different rendering/graphic programs to bring my design to life. On this project I opted to us a combination of Photoshop and Lumion.

Below; a modeled Section of my terraced steps down to the boardwalk covering a small retention pond. Also shown is my textured privacy wall design.

Using Photoshop I turned the section model into a grade and concrete detail used on a final art board for the Project.

Next for a final design board presentation, I created a series of displays. Graphic displays and realistic renderings are organized to show how The Pines could be used and constructed.

In this community planning project (ran by SODDA) I was teamed up with 5 other design students to develop a series of pavilions along the north Fargo green way. Initial research of our project and concept sketching helped us create our design strategy. Acting as a Project Manager and Site Planner, I first communicated with my team to try to find the best site and programing for their designs. Each site was carefully chosen based off of existing Riprean Zones and development.

With updated pavilion designs and graded sites I next worked with my team to draft details and sections in autoCAD. Adding more context to our overall master plan

Below; pavilion designs and location diagram

In this project we were tasked to design an active and dynamic park setting for a densely populated downtown center. My original concepts and designs were drafted using autoCAD. A final dimension plan is saved as a PDF to be used later.

Next, bringing my linework into Sketchup, I Modeled my site and built context using sketch-ups 3D warehouse

Using unrendered sketch-up images I next moved to Photoshop and Illustrator to add simple colors and textures for a sleek render look.

Selecting a plan, sections and perspectives that will further show how my design will be used.

Here is a diagram showing the different seating options in the park used on my final project booklet.
