Professional Statement

I’m Garrett Lieberg — a landscape architecture graduate driven by a simple belief: great places begin with people. My work is rooted in connection, between land and community, identity and ecology, memory and future. Whether it’s a public plaza, a post-disaster neighborhood, or a quiet greenway, I look for design opportunities that foster resilience, inclusivity, and pride of place.

I grew up in East Grand Forks and still draw from the rhythms of the Midwest. Coaching hockey, volunteering with River Keepers, and experimenting with things like repurposed shipping containers. These experiences shape how I think about design: adaptive, hands-on, and always community-centered.

Through each project, I strive to create places that feel authentic, durable, and alive — places that invite people in and give them a reason to return.

This Portfolio Showcases a variety of projects to highlight my design prowess.

VOYAGERproject

In the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, recovery called for more than reconstruction — it demanded a reimagining of how communities live, build, and adapt. This project explores a resilient, off-grid neighborhood in East Grand Bahama, where solar power, rainwater harvesting, elevated housing, and mangrove restoration come together to shape a self-sufficient and storm-ready future.

Sited on a decommissioned missile base, the project serves as both a prototype and a platform — addressing vulnerabilities such as storm surge, inadequate infrastructure, informal land tenure, and the disconnect between disaster relief and long-term recovery.

Housing units are rooted in local identity and practicality — designed to feel permanent, adapt over time, and respond to the land. Informed by conversations with regional experts, the proposal draws on public-private partnerships, local labor, and nature-based systems — reinforcing the idea that resilient design starts from within the community.

Using Gis mapping I collected accurate data to determine habitat and infrastructure damage on Grand Bahama Island post hurricane Dorian. This helped me make strong design decisions that will improve hurricane impacts on the island.

MCDOWELLGATEWAY AZ

Designed as a welcoming threshold to McDowell Mountain Regional Park, this gateway project celebrates local identity while offering an inclusive, accessible experience for residents and visitors alike. Native planting, sustainable materials, and pedestrian-focused pathways are woven into the design, balancing ecological sensitivity with visual clarity.

The gateway acts as both a landmark and a connector — reflecting the character of the surrounding community and encouraging meaningful interaction with the desert landscape. Rooted in values of inclusivity, resilience, and pride of place, the project establishes a strong sense of arrival while honoring the spirit of the Sonoran region.

Pavilion Series Community Planning Public Greenway Red R U N R I V E R

Red River Run reimagines Fargo’s greenway as a layered public realm — a place for movement, reflection, and gathering along the banks of the Red River. Developed through a collaborative community planning studio, the project introduces a series of low-impact pavilions sited within ecologically sensitive riparian zones.

Acting as Project Manager and Site Planner, I worked with a multidisciplinary student team to identify ideal pavilion locations and programming strategies. Through site analysis, conceptual sketching, and team dialogue, we aligned our design approach with existing development patterns while celebrating the region’s natural systems.

Each pavilion site was thoughtfully selected to strengthen connectivity, highlight natural assets, and offer new moments of engagement within the broader greenway network.

PERSONAL SPOTLIGHT

The Voyager Project

Re imagines shipping containers as adaptable, sustainable housing solutions for single-family use. Designed with resilience and affordability in mind, this innovative concept transforms industrial materials into modern, off-grid homes that emphasize functionality, durability, and eco-conscious living. The project reflects a commitment to creative reuse and thoughtful design, offering a practical yet stylish solution for those seeking sustainable housing options or disaster relief accommodations.

GUMDROP COMING 2025

The Voyager Project aligns closely with my thesis on resilient off-grid land development strategies for hurricane-prone regions by addressing the critical need for affordable, sustainable housing solutions in disaster-affected areas. This concept leverages shipping containers to create durable, hurricane-resistant homes designed for displaced populations. By focusing on modularity, eco-conscious materials, and self-sufficiency, the Voyager Project embodies the principles of resilience, mitigation, and sustainability central to my research, offering a practical framework for housing in vulnerable communities.
