Senior administration lawmakers, however, dismissed such moves, saying elections are fast approaching and an impeachment complaint could distract Congress from acting on urgent socio-economic measures. Reps. Jonathan de la Cruz of the Abakada Guro partylist group, Neri Colmenares of Bayan Muna and Terry Ridon of the Kabataan party-list said there was no doubt that Aquino committed impeachable offenses when he broke the chain of command of the Philippine National Police and continued to give orders to then suspended PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima, according to the report of the Board of Inquiry (BOI). “We are looking at the exact possible charges that can be filed in the impeachment complaint because there must be ac-

countability. His incompetence, negligence and even arrogance led to the loss of lives in Oplan Exodus,” De la Cruz told The STAR, referring to the secret operation to arrest Malaysian bomb maker Julkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, and his Filipino cohort Basit Usman. The police Special Action Force (SAF) commandos killed Marwan but Usman escaped. The SAF troopers later encountered Mulsim rebels that resulted in the killing of 44 policemen, 18 rebels and several civilians. “As of now, the only sanction that can be imposed is impeachment, because he’s immune from any lawsuit while still in office,” he said. Maguindanao students might hold graduation rites in evacuation centers MAGUINDANAO (March 15) – Some 5,000 graduating elementary and high school students are likely to hold graduation rites in different evacuation centers in Maguindanao starting next week, a regional education official said yesterday. John Magno, assistant secretary for operations of the Department of Education in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, said school heads in Maguindanao’s conflict-stricken Mamasapano, Sharif Saidona, Sharif Aguak, Salibo, Datu Saudi and Datu Unsay towns have been instructed to hold their graduation ceremonies in evacuation centers to keep the zeal and enthusiasm of the graduating students. “The ARMM leadership wants these graduating elementary pupils and high school students to feel that everything is being done for their good and that their dream of furthering their studies must not be weak-

ened by the security problems now besetting their villages,” Magno said. Magno said there are tacit indications the hostile situation in the affected towns will continue until the summer. More than 30 schools in the affected towns were closed last March 2 following the military offensive against Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF). The military operation against the BIFF was launched after the rebels blocked the Cotabato-Gen. Santos City Highway in Datu Unsay and Datu Saudi last Feb. 28, provoking a series of encounters that lasted until the next day. Guns have been silent since Friday, but evacuees in many relief sites, now more than 90,000, are reluctant to return home for fear of resumption of the firefights. Six soldiers and more than 30 rebels were killed in the gunfights in the past 

ANILA (March 15) — Lawmakers are studying the possibility of filing an impeachment complaint against President Aquino for his actions in implementing Oplan Exodus, citing the widespread public clamor to hold him accountable for the deaths of 44 police commandos and five civilians during the operation to arrest two international terrorists in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last Jan. 25.

US role in Philippine clash revealed MANILA (Xinhua) - After an earlier denial by the US embassy in the Philippines, Manila says US personnel were indeed involved in Oplan Exodus, the botched police operation in the town of Mamasapano, province of Maguindanao on Jan. 25. A report released Thursday by the Board of Inquiry (BOI) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) confirmed that there were six Americans at the command center of the PNP’s elite Special Action Force (SAF), hours before police commandos swooped down on the lair of wanted Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, alias “Marwan, “ and his Filipino sidekick, Basit Usman. In the pre-dawn operation, Marwan was killed while Usman escaped. But in the ensuing gun battle, 44 SAF troops, 14 combatants of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and five civilians were killed. The BOI, which was tasked to investigate the encounter, said the information about the presence of the Americans at the SAF command post was provided by Police Superintendent Michael John Mangahis, a senior SAF official, who was also involved in the daring police mission. “Mangahis revealed that six American nationals were at the TCP (tactical command post) in Shariff Aguak starting on the eve of the operations to provide real-time information to the SAF troops, “ the report said.

It said in the retrieval operations, US forces also helped in the medical evacuation of the wounded SAF commandos. Police General Getulio Napenas, the relieved SAF commander, also told the board that he handed Marwan’s left index finger, which the SAF troopers cut off for DNA samples, to two officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in General Santos City three days after the police operation. Later the FBI confirmed that through their preliminary DNA testing, the finger was from the slain terrorist. Quoting the sworn statement of Napenas, the board said the PNP’ s “US counterparts had been providing reliable information” about Marwan and Usman. Napenas said the information given by the US authorities “was considered in covert operations against the high-value targets.” In its reaction to the BOI report, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it checked reports of US involvement in the SAF operation with the US embassy and the embassy denied the US involvement. An embassy official, however, admitted that US troops helped evacuate casualties in the Mamasapano raid but that the operation was “planned and executed by Philippine authorities.” The Philippines and the

US are long-time allies and have signed military cooperation agreements that include the Mutual Defense Treaty and the Visiting Forces Agreement both of which are still in effect. As an ally, the Philippines has allowed the US to have some troops in the Southern Philippines as part of US war on terror. Until last month, the US had a unit of about 500 to 600 special force soldiers in southern Philippines that trained local troops to fight Islamic militants. Earlier, militant groups assailed the Aquino government for allowing the Americans to get involved in a purely domes-

tic police operation. In a statement, Roger Soluta, secretary general of the militant group Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) or May One Movement, said the involvement of the US in the Mamasapano incident “exposed the dark truth behind the muchhyped US war on terror.” Soluta said Malacanang, the presidential palace, was playing up the so-called war on terror of the US “to cover up the fact that the operation violated the Philippines’ sovereignty and was designed without consideration for Filipinos’ lives.” “The US is guilty not only of lying about its role in the Mamasapano operation and of

trying to elude accountability for the operation. It violated the Philippines’ sovereignty and killed many Filipinos, including civilians,” Soluta said. Soluta said that the US “war on terror” has reinforced, rather than changed, the unequal relations between the US and countries such as the Philippines, which allows Filipino troops to be used as “cannon fodders and considers Filipino civilian casualties as mere collateral damage.” Some Philippine lawmakers also inquired whether the US military had played a leading role in the Jan. 25 operation. -Philstar

of dealing with Napeñas instead of OIC-PNP Espina, bypassed the established PNP Chain of Command,” the PNP-BOI report read. Forty-four SAF commandos were doomed when the military failed to provide timely reinforcement. The raiders’ Motorola hand-held radios got wet and bogged down, making communication difficult, and several of their ordnance for M203 grenade launchers were duds. The BOI blamed a defective operation plan, the breakdown of communication on the ground, difficult terrain and the culture of “Pintakasi” among the armed groups in Mamasapano for the tragic outcome of the SAF operations. Pintakasi refers to armed villagers’ ganging up on intruders, particularly security forces. The BOI report discussed in detail the circumstances leading to the execution of Oplan Exodus, particularly the meeting of President Aquino with Purisima and Napeñas at Bahay Pangarap at Malacañang last Jan. 9 for a “mission update.” The mission objective was to arrest Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, and his Filipino cohort Basit Usman. Marwan was killed in the operation while Usman escaped. Under the Manual for PNP Fundamental Doctrine, a commander is required to discharge his responsibilities following the chain of command, the BOI stated. -Philstar

MANILA, Philippines - The chain of command in the Philippine National Police was broken by President Aquino himself when he allowed then suspended PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima to take part in Operation Plan Exodus. This was among the key conclusions of the PNP Board of Inquiry (BOI), which investigated the police operation to get high-value terrorists in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last Jan. 25. In its report, the BOI said Purisima provided inaccurate information to the President while then Special Action Force (SAF) commander Director Getulio Napeñas committed lapses in implementing Exodus and erred in taking orders from a suspended superior. The report said President Aquino violated the PNP chain of command when he “exercised his prerogative” by directly dealing with Napeñas instead of with PNP officer-incharge Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina before and during the SAF operations. Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II only learned of the operations when SAF commandos had begun sustaining casualties in clashes with guerrillas from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters. “While the President has the prerogative to deal directly with any of his subordinates, the act

15 days. A spate of gunfights from Wednesday until Thursday afternoon in Shariff Saidona and Salibo forced more than 10,000 villagers to abandon their homes. Laisa Alamia, executive secretary of ARMM, said there are already 93,402 evacuees in different relief sites in Maguindanao as of Friday. There were only more than 70,000 evacuees from March 1 until last Tuesday in different evacuation centers in the province.

Alamia said ARMM Gov. Mujiv Hataman directed the regional government’s Humanitarian Emergency Assistance and Response Team (HEART) to immediately dispatch three truckloads of relief supplies for the new evacuees. The HEART and the Anak Mindanao party-list, led by Rep. Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, distributed Wednesday more than 30 tons of food supplies to thousands of evacuees in a joint relief mission supported by the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, the provincial government of Maguindanao and the Department of Social Welfare and Development. -Philstar

would also focus on the reported cover-up being done by the administration based on the conflicting statements of Aquino and testimonies of other officials, as well as the actions they took after the Mamasapano incident. “This is like the Nixon doctrine, What information did you have? When did you receive it? How did you act on it?” he said, adding that the late US President Richard Nixon was not impeached in the 1970s because of the break-in at the headquarters of his political opponents at the Watergate complex in Washington, but the actions he did to cover up the scandal. If proponents will insist on filing an impeachment complaint, they will, however, have to wait until August, owing to the one-year ban provided for in the Constitution. Militant lawmakers in August last year filed an impeachment complaint against Aquino in the House of Representatives over the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) case. Ridon said he is willing to wait for August in filing the complaint, adding Aquino committed culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust in calling the shots in Oplan Exodus. “I think the 109 signatories that we have calling for the resumption of the congressional inquiry on the Mamasapano incident can be converted into impeachment votes,” Ridon said. -Philstar

Marriage, dreams, suicide and immigration!

Editorial

E

VERY month with incredible support from my office, we will deal with several hundreds of immigration and visiting visa files from a number of countries around the world. The following story is true but do not assume this case is from the Philippines -the man in question (I will refer to him as John) is aware of my personal interest in his file and knows I am writing his story.

Lessons from a raid

M

OST of the details contained in the 120-page report of the Philippine National Police Board of Inquiry on the commando raid in Mamasapano, Maguindanao have been reported in the past weeks. But the BOI report did present interesting findings and conclusions. One is that there is a chain of command even in a civilian police force, and it was broken in the Mamasapano raid on Jan. 25, with tragic consequences. Another intriguing conclusion is that President Aquino himself broke the chain of command and allowed a suspended PNP chief, Director General Alan Purisima, to take on something more than an advisory role in such a high-risk operation to get top terrorists. The raid by the PNP Special Action Force offers many lessons particularly for the President and commander-in-chief. Military forces, according to the BOI report, failed to provide timely reinforcement because of inaccurate information, a seeming lack of urgency on the part of the PNP, and considerations about the peace process with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. Among the BOI recommendations that should prove easy to implement is an upgrade in PNP equipment and supplies. Some of the ordnance for the SAF team’s M203 grenade launchers turned out to be duds. Their handheld Motorola radios conked out when submerged in water and were not designed for military-type combat operations, and the beleaguered SAF members were cut off, the BOI reported. The tricky problem is how to deal with a president and a PNP chief who both ignore a suspension order by the Office of the Ombudsman in carrying out a high-risk counterterrorism operation. A board recommendation that also poses a challenge is filing criminal charges not only against the PNP officials involved in the operation but also against MILF members who executed several wounded SAF commandos. Perhaps the PNP had reason to keep Operation Plan Exodus from the military until the last moment when its help was needed against the MILF and its cousins in the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters. But keeping the PNP officer-in-charge out of the loop contributed to the failure to provide timely reinforcement to the SAF raiders. Combined with what the BOI considered to be lapses in the execution of Exodus, the SAF team was doomed. There are lessons to be learned here, for President Aquino and his security officers. Too bad those lessons can no longer save the 44 SAF commandos.-Philstar

Every year there are hundreds of people who travel abroad to marry a special person, or immigrate to Canada for better employment opportunities. John, like many individuals who have sought immigration assistance from my office, came to Canada alone in 2010 to establish himself first in preparation to sponsoring his wife and their three- year-old child. However, his wife, due to several factors such as the stress of living apart from John, began to experience depression. While living in Canada alone trying to get the documents in order to sponsor his wife and child, John heard the tragic news. His wife had taken her own life. John believes the anxiety

Is their hope beyond the cross? ASTER means the restoration of hope.

Someone has said, “We can live forty days without food, eight days without water, four minutes without air, but only a few seconds without hope.” Speaking of the role of hope in our lives, Thornton Wilde said, “Despair all too readily embraces the ills it foresees; hope is an energy that arouses the mind to explore every possibility to combat them.” The people who were a part of the first Easter knew all about the need for hope in order to be able to continue on. They had knelt there at the foot of the cross watching the one who carried all their hopes and dreams die. They had listened as He said, “Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit”, and then, they saw Him bow His head for the last time. Their guts had wrenched as the Roman soldier plunged the spear into his side removing all doubt that Jesus was really dead. They followed those who carried Him to the tomb, and

Suffering can bring believers closer to Christ. Suffering teaches us total dependence on Him. How many of us have been through circumstances where we knew that we could not have made it through without the Lord being there? Suffering also brings people closer together. when they heard the resounding sound of the rock that sealed the tomb, they knew that their hope was dead – sealed in the tomb with the one that they thought was their Savior. They knew what it was like to be hopeless. Some of us know that same feeling of hopelessness. When we look at our marriage, we see only despair. When we think about our children – whether they are still young or full grown, we wonder what kind of a future there is for them.

Living Hope When we consider our life and the mistakes that we have made, we are tempted to give up hope that anyone could ever love us, forgive us and make something good out of our life. My prayer for us is that we will experience that same restoration of hope that those first century Christians experienced when they came to the tomb and heard the words, “[Jesus] is not here; He is risen just as He said.” They discovered that there is hope beyond the cross. What we are going through or whatever 

Piolo Pascual and Sarah Geronimo are finally teaming up for a movie project. This year, the two stars will headline the romantic movie The Break-Up Playlist. Sarah admitted that she has been waiting for this film for two years and that she is truly thrilled that it will finally materialize on the big screen. “After two years, matagal na, napaexciting. Very excited kasi alam namin na we would be able to show something sa mga tao so iba and hopefully ma-appreciate nila,” the Pop Star Princess said during the story conference of the film. The main theme of the movie will be music and Piolo is ecstatic to offer a fresh concept to the moviegoers. “Aside from the characters we could offer something which is music. That’s why it’s called Break-up Playlist. The movie will revolve around the songs in our lives, in our relationships, so maganda. Actually mas matagal sila sa pagpili ng pagkanta so it will play a big part in the movie.” Piolo will be playing the role of a rock star while Sarah will be playing the role of an aspiring singer. Director Dan Villegas stressed that the movie is not a musical though. “It’s romance, hindi siya musical, parang story siya tungkol sa dalawang musicians. More on romance-drama,” direk Dan said. Sarah shared that it is easier now to do a romantic movie since she is in love in real

life. “Oo siyempre, may inspirasyon,” Sarah commented. Meanwhile, Piolo who is not romantically involved with anyone as of the moment does not see it as a hindrance in giving justice to his character. ”Kailangan ba [in love]? In anything that we do, it’s a matter of channeling it right. Ang sa akin naman inspirasyon ko, trabaho ko, whatever character I play, for me, if I have to fall in love, with the characters talagang the whole story it’s all part of it, ‘yon yung maganda sa trabaho natin.” Sarah relayed that it took time before the movie materialized since it underwent numerous revisions in order for the project to fit them as actors. “Noong in-offer sa akin ‘to sobrang excited po ako pero ayaw ko po siya na parang lumipas lang. Gusto ko po siya maging maganda ‘yung material po namin kasi siyempre si Papa P ‘yan so kailangan maganda talaga,” she stated. Will there be a kissing scene in the film? “Hindi. In my opinion hindi naman talaga super required ‘pag hinihingi lang talaga ng eksena eh di ‘yun,” direk Dan replied.push. abs-cbn.com/

Julia Montes admitted that Coco Martin is an inspiration for her because of the things he achieved in his life. She also wants to be like Coco who worked hard to achieve the things he wants. They both came from nothing, Julia said, and entered showbiz for money--to help their families. They are also both given the opportunities that not everyone is lucky to have. They felt very happy to be entrusted with the projects they got. Coco always advises Julia not to allow anyone to court her and to just focus on her goals and dreams first. He is seemingly likening her to himself, who up to now has yet to enter in a serious relationship. Julia clarified that Coco is not controlling him, but he just wants to make sure that Julia will not be derailed from her dreams. The actress said she admires the actor very much because of how he turned his life around. Some men are just okay the first time a girl meets them,

but Julia has known Coco for a long time and she has yet to see something to dislike about him. Coco and Julia are currently working in “Wansapanataym’s Yamishita’s Treasure.” Previously, they worked together in “Walang Hanggan,” “Ikaw Lamang” and “A Moment in Time.” She admitted that Coco is her ideal guy because of his family values and the way he takes care of the people he loves. Julia admitted she has a crush on Coco, who earlier said he has to fall in love with his leading ladies to deliver well. That means with the number of times they worked together, Coco repeatedly fell in love with her. Julia was too shy to react on what Coco said, but admitted she has a great admiration for the actor. She is amazed by Coco, not as an actor but who he is as a person. For now, Julia is focused on her work, just like what Coco wants for her. Her number one priority is her family. She would only want to enter a relationship once she knows her family is settled already. That way, she can give all her time and effort to her relationship. Julia said no one’s courting her now because they felt intimidated with her. Once they approach her, Julia immediately makes them feel that she’s not ready for any kind of relationship with them. -pinoystop.com

Living the movie in her mind MANILA, Philippines - Whenever Rachelle Ann Go talks about having dreams and making them happen, she’s certainly speaking from a place of experience. Last year, after a decade’s worth of experience in Philippine showbiz, the 28-year-old performing star decided to spread her wings and pursue her West End dreams, joining the cast of the revival production of the Cameron Mackintosh mega-musical Miss Saigon. No wonder, Walt Disney Southeast Asia deemed Rachelle as the best person to sing and star in the music video of the Disney theme song A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes. The music video coincides with the theatrical release of the live-action version of the Disney animated classic, Cinderella. In the said 1950 film, the song — composed by Mack David, Al Hoffman and Jerry Livingston — is sung by Cinderella herself in a scene where she tells her furry little friends to take heart and never stop dreaming. Rachelle came home early this week to promote her Disney project, which material-

ized only about three weeks ago. “I had to ask permission from Miss Saigon but they were very supportive. They were happy that it’s a Disney project. Everything just fell into place,” she told reporters last Wednesday. The recording session and video shoot took place in a Disney studio in London, with Rachelle gushing: “It was a full production and had a Hollywood feel to it.” She said the project was a “dream come true” for her because like many young girls, she grew up wanting to be a Disney princess. “Even as a child, I dreamt of becoming Cinderella. Maybe that’s why I love shoes (laughs)! Seriously, as a kid, I always watched (the cartoon version) with my sibling,” said Rachelle, whose first involvement in Disney-related projects was starring in the local stage adaptations of Disney musicals Little Mermaid and Tarzan. In the middle of her recording session, Disney also sprung another surprise on Rachelle. Her mom Russell was flown from Manila to see her. Nathalie Tomada/Philstar

Simple weight training & stretching program for momsto-be I hope you enjoyed our last article Exercise during pregnancy I. Exercise has been a huge part of my life. I played sports all throughout high school, university and had kept up with maintaining my fitness level. I had taken up long distance running, weight training, Zumba dance fitness, yoga, boxing and basketball with my senior women’s team. I knew I wanted a family someday so when that time came, my mentality when I was training is that I am training for when I get pregnant. So, I had this goal to keep active and keep on with weight training, cardio workout, play basketball which worked. I was happy with my weight and the intensity of my workout when I found out I was expecting. That means I was in a good start. The first trimester can be tricky and every pregnancy is different. I definitely took it easy during the first 12 weeks. I mostly walked daily but I was tired and want to sleep all the time. Not until I was 4 months when I regained my energy back that I started back to my weight training and cardio workout. I adjusted and I made sure I target almost all body parts. I focused on hip exercises with resistance and stretching a lot. I am here to help you get started and show you safe exercises you can do. But first, consult your doctor in regards to exercising. If you get the green light, then let’s begin. Exercise Smarts:Reminders and recommendations before starting an exercise program. • Drink water before you exercise • Bring snacks • Stay cool • Dress for exercise success • Select the right surface • Stay off the slopes • Stay on the level • Stay off your back • Avoid risky moves • Listen to your body ***Please consult your doctor before performing these exercises***

Complete weight training 3 sets of 10 repetitions 2-3 times a week. The dumbbell I used are 10lbs, you can use weights 10lbs and under. I know some ladies use 8lbs or 5lbs for different exercises. The goal is to maintain strength and not to lift heavy weights. Leg exercises can be done without weights as you are carrying heavier weight (your baby in your belly). Complete stretching exercises daily 3 sets of 20-30 second holds. These can be done in the morning or before bed. Pick your favorite ones to make it more fun for you to perform. Please listen to your body and slow down when getting into stretching positions. Take a longer break every exercise as you will find your will be tired quicker. Have fun and good luck! Pacquiao buys JLo mansion: report MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao has reportedly purchased a mansion in Beverly Hills, California previously owned by international superstar Jennifer Lopez. According to a PEP.ph report, the eight-division boxing champion has already acquired the 10,000 square-feet property located in a gated community in Beverly Hills. A source, meanwhile, told ABSCBNnews.com that the fighting congressman has already given a down payment for the mansion, which was estimated to be worth $12 million or over P500 million.

‘’Pag kaka alam ko may partial payment na,’’ the source said. Pacquiao, who is in the US to train for his upcoming May 2 bout against American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., earlier told ANC that he went on a house-hunting. “Nag-offer na ako. Maganda kasi ‘yung bahay tapos gated siya and hindi basta basta ‘yung tao makakapunta,” he said. Although he refused to divulge the amount of his offer, Pacquiao clarified that he is still in the process of negotiation. “Nagtatawaran pa,” he said, laughing.

FEATURE STORY

Free e-poems from the prolific Edwin Cordevilla Edwin Cordevilla’s second collection of poems, The Occasions of Air, Fire, Water, Earth, published in 2012, has recently moseyed its way into the electronic universe. Those who seek solace with the elusive Muse could now download this book for free at Lulu.com. I am not certain if this is a sound business proposition. I always hold the idea that artists, regardless of their medium, should be supported or patronized by the general public for their creations simply because they play a distinct role in our society. A true artist is a keen observer of nature and the vicissitudes of day-to-day existence. To a poet, anything is a fair game as long as he can suspend it in time and space through the magical wand of poesy. A single poem may take many restless nights and torturous ordeals before it morphs to its final form. Hence, it is within the realm of reason to assume that anyone who wish to momentarily immerse himself in the world of a poet, whether as a mean of rekindling his sense of humanity or a form of escapism, must shell out money for all the artist’s troubles, same as a moviegoer pays for a ticket for a seat inside a movie house. But Cordevilla has never been lured by the financial gains of writing poems. I should know. The quintessential poet has been a comrade in pen, a friend, a confidante and a drinking buddy for two decades. He earns a living by being a brilliant public relations practitioner. This afforded him to write creatively without compromising his art. With the everchanging world becoming more and more borderless in the 21st century, I suppose, Cordevilla, a visionary in modern Filipino poetry in English, is eyeing the world as his stage.

collection. This 2nd offering contains about 125 creations. This time a more mature poet emerged, as if he was sitting alone on the peak of a mystical mountain, observing both mundane and significant events of his own life from a vantage point. Vermillion , a nicely sewed poem, clearly showed Jose Garcia Villa’s influence on Cordevilla. “Sure there is no foregoing/ In the hemlock days of the midnight sun. //Ever the canopy of the ever star/ In the bar ways of the bastard wine, / Never before in the foregoing pace of the splitting mountain, / There in the ever ways of the sugarcoated clouds --/ “I say, Hello, hello out there, I have computed/ Your probability in the blueprint of decimal places.”// There is thunder care in the exploding brain,/ So much, if indeed I have murdered a speck of dust/ In the cosmic spectral lightning bend (ing / The island in the provinces of the soul).// Come to think of it, blood is redful / In the spitting gutter kiss, so much for the ways/ Of death, balming the acid bosom,/Or as the ancients say:/ Memory in one’s secret horn.// The alliteration and syntax in this poem are perfectly fused together to carry its desired effect. Forget about what would

In this particular instance, poetic license is justified. Villa-esque influence also manifested itself in the “shape” poems Liquid, Reflection and Sleight of Hand. These three poems are better appreciated when seen while being read aloud. In Musa, on the other hand, a reader could sense the ghost of Walt Whitman, the free verse master, treading from one line to another: /have you seen her?

she was here a while ago, connecting the telling universe/ to the page, some love electric/ the planets, suns and stars/ revolving , gliding in a quickened sleep into the dream on paper./ the tongued storm with voice of all eyes, with the rhythm of entire/ petal force empirely spinning in one gentle touch…./ Same is true with Tomato Bomb HQ: / we feel we are safe in this planet/like its lyricists promoting drugs can really save a life/ like academic dictators enjoy exclusivity as prophets/ like priests can really run public affairs/ like government agencies are really doing what they should be doing… /. Or in What Shall I Tell You :

The first one is screaming with righteous indignation: /… there you witness the skull/ with hole above the window of the eye, / that investigators would never mistake/ as socket for a horn, / in the day that is too late for vengeance, / too early for a presidential decree/ in the war hole of memory, / the sperm of youth once clawed… The race is going to the desert/ where men are raped by religion, / and women split into four parts, / the heaven growls but the earth/ rebounds with vulgarities.// The other one is toned down yet equally sublime and poignant: / …There shall come a time when mere whim/Shall make things happen, when one’s thoughts/ Shall replicate in the scores of millions of minds/ And bloom from the lips of the redeemed nation…/ The simple poems like Biography # 1, E. Santos Street, Confession and Genesis are personal favorites. They are easy reading but the crisp images it conveyed linger.

/ Surely, there must be a story that will amuse you,/ An epic of a second that will trigger all your wild imaginings, the hyper-moment of all hyper-moments, / The sound of a leaf, the blinding note of a voice,/ The ghost of touch, the sudden wind on your cheek, / And the grace of a walk there on Morayta,//.

Despite the fact that I am not sold to the idea that the ebook version of this collection could now be downloaded for free, I am, at least, happy that Cordevilla’s works could now be enjoyed and appreciated by people outside the Philippine archipelago.

Reading Cordevilla’s poems in this collection is a glimpse of his personal journey as he exorcised his personal demons. In the process, it inadvertently cast his worldviews, frustrations, angst, hope and redemption onto the 165 pages of lyrical outburst. In the poet’s own words, “It is a testament of survival, a confession of being.” When Cordevilla’s first book Phoenix and Other Poems came out in 2001, the poet was relatively young. The poems in that collection depicted a young man’s folly as he navigated the intricacies of adulthood. Like the protagonist in John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, Cordevilla documented every speck of detail of his journey as a young man who has a heavy baggage strapped on his back. In Cordevilla’s case, he captured everything through the lens of his soul – his poems! At times, he was sidelined by the distractions along the roadsides. Yet he emerged victorious because he was able to convey lyrically to the readers, like me, the joys and pains of being young and alive, his heartbeat giving rhythm to each poem in that

Why Mark Muñoz is retiring after UFC Manila fight

MANILA (March 15) – UFC veteran Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Muñoz decided to hang up his gloves for a reason most of his fellow Filipinos can relate to – his family. Muñoz announced last Tuesday that his match at UFC Fight Night Manila against Luke Barnatt will be his last, putting an end to a sevenyear UFC career. Muñoz told reporters that his family – specifically his son – was the primary motivation for that decision. “My son came up to me about six months ago and says, ‘Dad, I want to quit baseball, I want to quit soccer, and I want to wrestle.’ I said, ‘Why, why you wanna do that, bud?’ I said, ‘You’re good in baseball and so good in soccer,’” Muñoz related. “And he said, ‘Because Dad, I love wrestling, and I want you to coach me.’ And I go, oh my gosh,” he added. Muñoz shared that his son set a high goal for himself: to get a full scholarship to wrestle for Muñoz’s alma mater, Oklahoma State University, and become an NCAA Division 1 champion. “I said, ‘What makes you think that out of the thousands of wrestlers who

want to get a full ride scholarship to Oklahoma State University, what makes you think you’re gonna get a full ride scholarship and win an NCAA National Championship?’” Muñoz asked his son. “And he looked me in the eye, and he says, ‘Dad, I have you.” Muñoz turned emotional at this point and had to hold back tears. “Just that along, it makes me emotional, you know?” he said. Muñoz also noted that his eldest daughter is now a junior in high school and will just have one more year with him before she leaves for college. He added that it’s also time for him to fulfill a promise to his wife. By Camille B. Naredo, ABSCBNnews.com

MANILA (March 15) -- Manny Pacquiao agreed on all the conditions set by Floyd Mayweather, Jr. including submitting himself to random testing by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for their May 2 (May 3 Manila time) showdown in Las Vegas. The USADA random testing has been one of the road blocks in their failed attempts in the past where Pacquiao even sued and reportedly collected around $5 million in a lawsuit filed against Mayweather. Pacquiao has been submitting himself to random urine and blood testing by the Las Vegas-based Voluntary Anti-Doping Association since losing a 6th round knockout to Juan Manuel Marquez, who hasn’t scored one in their first three fights. “We’ve agreed on the USDA testing and we’ve agreed to their rules. I believe a lot of this that was spread around [about Pacquiao’s reluctance to test] was unfortunate and non-sensical. There’s not any issue with Manny or Floyd. They are not taking performance-enhancing drugs,” Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum said in an interview with LA Times. Pacquiao quickly agreed to this condition during the negotiation to shut up all the rumors. The Olympic-type drug test will be administered unannounced in-and-out of competition blood and/or urine tests at any point through fight night, May 2, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas according to the LA Times report. USADA will use the advanced Carbon Isotope Ratio process in testing for synthetic testosterone while also testing for the energy-boosting EPO and strenght-building human growth hormone. Their tests will all be submitted to the Nevada Commission, which will regulate the fight, and the World Anti-Doping Agency. USADA Chief Executive Travis Tygard commended both Pacquiao and Mayweather for their bold move that will have big repercussions if any of them will be found tested positive for PEDs. If I were to believe what my constituent is telling me to be true, then I would pose this question -- how can our immigration system in some areas of the world be so insensitive and continue to delay the processing of a child? There are only two possible explanations that I can think of right now. First, that immigration knows something more sinister about the file that raises serious issues related to the father and/or the child. If this is the case, why has Immigration Canada not revealed to me or my office the reasons for the lack of action? The second possibility would impute negative motives that would include misrepresenting remarks by the father to me. What I do know for a fact is that whether it is countries like the Philippines, India, or China, processing times have gotten much worse. There are ways where we can dramatically improve the system when it comes to sponsoring children and spouses. As for this particular case, until Immigration Canada provides me or my office a legitimate reason, I continue to believe that this father and his daughter are victims of an incredible injustice brought about by an unfortunate immigration processing procedure.

we have done does not need to destroy us and steal our hope. We can hope again.

Beyond the cross, hope endures even through suffering. One of the things that threaten to steal our hope is suffering. Suffering has been a part of what it means to be human ever since sin entered into the world. And even though Jesus paid for our sins on the cross with His own blood, still suffering is present with us and will be until this world is a part of history. We can let suffering steal our hope, or we can hold onto that hope by concentrating on some of the positive things that can come out of suffering: Suffering can bring believers closer to Christ. Suffering teaches us total dependence on Him. How many of us have been through circumstances where we knew that we could not have made it through without the Lord being there? Suffering also brings people closer together. Suffering assures believers that they belong to Christ. Jesus said that we should expect persecution and suffering. They persecuted Him; He promised that they would persecute us. This will continue until one day when God says that the cup is full, and His judgment will be

poured out. Suffering itself and the attacks of the enemy confirm that I am a part of God’s family. Suffering reminds believers that this world is not eternal and it is not home. Suffering changes believers and produces hope within us. We usually say, “As long as there is life, there is hope.” The truth is, “As long as there is hope, there is life.” Every time that we make it over some obstacle in our life, it gives us hope that empowers us to make it over the next obstacle that comes along. When we are faced with a situation that threatens to steal our hope, look back. Look back at all those other times that we thought there was no hope. We made it through those times. God is still the same as He has ever been, and His power is still available to us. We can make it over. Let us avail of the power of the resurrection of Jesus to overcome sufferings that we face. Need help in understanding what you have just read? Need prayer or someone to talk to? Please don’t hesitate to give me a call (204-633-2230), email me (hope1@mymts.net) or better still be our guest at our worship services every Sunday beginning at 10:30 AM at Church of the Living Hope, 235 Enniskillen Avenue, Winnipeg, MB

Paul Ong to represent Team Canada in WCOPA

PAUL ONG is a man on a mission: to become a singing star and make his family and community proud. To do that, he needs to overcome some obstacles and face the challenge before him. The stage is set for the new immigrant from the Philippines to represent Team Canada in the Vocal Category of the World Championship of Performing Arts, which is touted as a “Talent Olympics” for aspiring performers and entertainers where contestants battle for the coveted gold medal. Over 40 countries are taking part in the WCOPA for the best vocal, dance, instrumental, acting, and modeling. The competition will be held in Hollywood, California in July this year. For him to be able to represent Canada, Paul will need some sponsorship as the com-

petition requires expenses that are beyond his means. A sponsorship or any form of assistance will help cover the registration fee, airfare and accommodation for nine days. Paul, who is pure Chinese, said: “I always imagine myself having big concerts and I think this is the best way possible for me to get to my dream,” before his rendition of West Side Story’s “Somewhere” in Canada’s Got Talent in 2013. This hometown hero from Manitoba with the gentle voice said he doesn’t usually think and feel that he’s got some “talent within” him, but getting the nod of the three judges in Canada’s Got Talent changed that perception. “It gave me an assurance that I do have some talent,” he said with a smile. Paul and his friends will hold a fund-raising event in April in order to raise more funds. “I really hope we could

count on your support, because I really look forward to embark on this endeavor as it is such a great opportunity for me to once again represent our country, and our province,” he said. Paul knows it’s not a walk in the park but there’s only one way for him to find out and that is to go out there and show the world what he’s got. Create a foundation for a healthy financial future W

HEN building a house, you always start with a solid foundation. It makes sense to do the same when building a financial plan. We can’t always predict or prevent difficulties in our lives, but we can still plan for some of the unknowns. When building a financial plan, it’s important to first take care of the “non-controllable events.”

If you became seriously ill, what would happen? How would your family cope? What would happen to your finances?

You can take steps toward having good health or a long life, but you’re never completely in control. Most people have recognized the value of life insurance. It’s just as important to recognize the value of health insurance.

If you became seriously ill, what would happen? How would your family cope? What would happen to your finances? According to the 2013 Sun Life Canadian Health Index, 40 percent of Canadians faced financial hardship after a serious health event and financed their health crisis in the following ways: • 22% turned to credit cards or personal lines of credit; • 22% accessed personal savings; • 12% borrowed from a loved one; and

• 5% were forced to either remortgage or sell their homes. You may assume that you’re adequately covered by the government or through your employer. However, here are a few questions to consider: • If you have disability insurance coverage, what portion of your pre-disability income would be replaced if you were unable to work? • What if you’re self-employed? How would you replace lost income? • How would you pay for necessary care (e.g. therapy, home care or assistive devices) beyond what the government provides? • If you leave your job or retire, what coverage do you have in case you become ill and need care? What can you do to protect yourself? More health insurance solutions are now available to complement traditional insurance benefits and protect against a wider variety of risks. Personal health insurance can fill gaps for individuals who don’t have coverage through their place of employment, or for small business owners. Expenses such as dentistry, prescription drugs, physiotherapy, ambulance, medical equipment and in-home nursing can add up very quickly. That’s where personal health insurance can come in. Critical illness insurance offers help paying costs associated with life-altering illnesses. If you become sick with an illness covered by your policy and survive the waiting period, you receive a

Long-term care insurance provides as income-style benefit to individuals who become dependent on someone else to care for themselves as a result of illness, injury, or deteriorated mental abilities. The weekly benefit maybe used however the insured person chooses. Coverage amounts aren’t linked to earnings and the benefit doesn’t end at any particular age.
