FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Every edition of Spirit of the Dragon highlights the amazing work of our faculty, staff, and students, but this one is special in that it covers a number of individuals whose contributions might occasionally “fly under the radar.” Among other articles, there is a great piece on Mandarin teacher, Hong Ding; the quiet influence of Paulette Ward, Diane Collins, and Lucy Ventura in the Lower School; and the supportive, understated leadership of Brita Stewart in the Middle School. Other stories cover the involvements of Upper School students Daniyel Coy and Aicha Keita, the re-emergence

of performing arts this year, the efforts of Upper School Science teacher, Krystal Rolon, to bring back views of the night sky, and much, much more.

The wonderful thing about GCS is that any number of our students, faculty, and staff could have been highlighted in an edition dedicated to “unsung heroes.” It occurred to me, in fact, that this term could be used to describe the entire GCS community as we have adapted to the challenges of the COVID-19 era with fortitude, resilience, and creativity.

Our faculty and staff, for example, have been amazing in stepping up to cover classes and other duties for one another when someone has been out for a COVID-related absence. What has always been a hallmark of the GCS faculty and staff culture has never been more on display or more deeply felt and appreciated than it has been over the past couple of years.

Our nurses (Amy Ro, Kaitlin Woodford, and Lorie St. Cyr) continue to serve GCS in ways that couldn’t have been imagined two years ago.

From my perspective, every Head of School relies on the unquantifiable hard work of a team of administrators, and I am grateful for the leadership of our division heads (Hilary McCarthy, Kevin Boland, and Brandon Neblett) and for the thoughtful work that is being done in our finance, admissions, development, athletics, technology, and marketing offices. Also falling square into the unsung heroes category is GCS’s Board of Trustees. Asking for nothing in return, our Trustees, led by Brad Smith, give generously of their time, talent, and expertise to support the School in the near term while also thinking constantly about how to strengthen GCS long into the future. Because it is intergenerational and legacy-oriented, there is really no limit to the cascading ripple effects of the work of our Trustees.

Ultimately, what we take away from this edition of Spirit of the Dragon is that every member of this community contributes to the quality of the GCS experience, in ways large and small, and that influence and impact do not need to be tied to titles or formal position. Indeed, those with the largest impact are often those who concentrate on building meaningful relationships with others and on serving something larger than themselves.

BRIDGES THROUGH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE, HONG DING MAKES AN IMPACT TO MANY.

As Glenelg Country School (GCS) entered the 21st century, Kingdon Gould, Jr., one of the school’s founders, dreamed of offering a new language option to students. Through a mutual friend, Gould met Hong Ding, who in 2004 became GCS’ Mandarin teacher. Well-versed in several languages—Ding is fluent in Korean, Mandarin, and English, and is now learning French—her journey to the United States and GCS is equally diverse.

As a Chinese person with a Korean heritage, Ding grew up in Beijing, China. She attended college in DaLian and majored in economics. Shortly after graduating, Ding married and worked for a time with the Chinese government’s Tax Bureau. Ding and her husband, Chengri, often talked about moving to the US after marrying. Passionate about freedom, the couple participated in student-led protests in Tiananmen Square in the spring of 1989.

A PRUDENT YEAR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL’S PRINCIPLES ARE A FOUNDATION.

We’ve all heard stories about lottery winners who come to ruin—it happens. Yes, some are smart with their winnings and enjoy an improved quality of life. Still, just as often, people who suddenly find themselves with enormous resources and many options end up making terrible decisions. It can be perplexing and heartbreaking. If not grounded by a guiding philosophy, unable to make adjustments along the way, money and success can lead to bigger and bigger mistakes.

Has the Middle School been getting it right during the past year? When easy answers are hard to find—where there are no winning lottery tickets—we continue to look first to principles for guidance: care for our students, helping them become their best selves, and preparing them to enter the wider world. And, during the pandemic, keep them safe while also keeping them in school, in an academically challenging environment conducive to their social and emotional growth. To look at it another way, planting and cultivating the same seeds we’ve always planted, just in a different way.

So much information has come at us that it is hard to separate the signal from the noise. We strive to apply sound judgment to do what we think is best for each division’s students, parents, and teachers. There is no one-size-fits-all, so we avoid the idea that there is one magic answer or total solution that will be perfect for everyone that gives us the slight edge. Instead, the little things implemented incrementally, chosen deliberately, and executed safely allow us to keep our doors open and our students on campus for the GCS experience. It isn’t perfect or above criticism, and we sometimes have to take steps backward, but we always strive to identify what is in the best interests of our students and families, listen to feedback, and move with care.

Here we are, a year and a half later. This year is better than the last, and last year was better than the end of the one before when the pandemic started. Perhaps we are that prudent lottery winner. We haven’t squandered our winnings, we’ve moved cautiously and conservatively, and we continue to adapt and improve the quality of our students’ educational experience. And we do this knowing there are still challenges ahead. Variants remain a concern. So we continue to be cautious, remaining socially distant when possible, properly wearing masks, and encouraging vaccination. But we are also inching toward normal. The quality of life students enjoy is a result of our careful strategy, the hard work of our faculty, and the cooperation of our students and families. It is also a consequence of the strong community bond we’ve forged over many years, allowing us to reap what we planted and cultivated for so many years before this.

If you were to ask teachers in the Upper School for a list of student leaders, one name would be among the top answers: Daniyel Coy ’22. A Dragon since 2008, he arrived at Glenelg Country School (GCS) as a four-year-old pre-kindergarten student. Coy is a lifer—a student who has attended GCS since at least kindergarten—and has seen an evolution around topics vital to him.

“There has been growth in the social context of where our dialogues are taking us now, especially regarding issues around diversity and inclusion,” he explains. For this reason, Coy has immersed himself in an array of community and social initiatives that he hopes will shape his career ambitions.

Embracing the diversity of the GCS community, Coy participates in many clubs and activities, including Common Ground, the Upper School’s diversity club. “We discuss ways to educate the community around topics of diversity and think of ways to promote inclusivity in our community,” Coy explains.

FALL SPORTS RECAP BOYS CROSS COUNTRY The varsity team finished the year with a sixth-place finish in the MIAA B Conference. Jack Roth ’22 and William Mantzaris ’22 led with 13th and 18th place finishes, respectively. Tryston Brown ’24, Zach Gruzs ’23, Michael Hersey ’24, Josef Marschall ’22, and Ian Noble ’23 rounded out the varsity squad. On the junior varsity squad, Kyle Goh ’24 and Trey Miller ’24 led the way and are poised to join the varsity team next season. A hard run season was capped off by personal records at the championship meet from Mantzaris, Marschall, and Noble.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY The team had a great fall season. This season, the team competed in six meets, led by Katie Leavy ’22 and captain Joanie Morningstar ’22. The team improved throughout the season, concluding with a strong championship meet. Leavy led the way as the top runner throughout the season, including a 5K personal record of 22:25, winning second place at the championship and earning IAAM All-Conference honors. Julia Gondek ’24 and Meera Saini ’25, brought tremendous energy to the team all season. Overall, the team should be incredibly proud of their effort, growth, and performance.

FIELD HOCKEY With a roster comprised of two freshmen, two sophomores, six juniors, and eight seniors, the team finished with a 1-6 record. Led by a fantastic group of seniors, the Dragons had an incredible group of hard-working players who supported and encouraged one another. The scoreboard did not reflect the effort and determination each player put forth. Grayce Cooper ’22, Madeline Herman ’23, and Laura Kim ’22 anchored the defense, while first-year player goalkeeper Jamie Marszal ’22 ended the season with incredible saves. Congratulations to Hannah Glawe ’22 and Kim on being named to the All-Conference team.

BOYS SOCCER The team showed great ability to learn and adjust throughout the season. Led by a solid senior class, the team turned a rocky start—going six games without a win—to finishing fourth and making the playoffs for the first time in the MIAA B division. Alex Farquhar ’22 and Brennan McKneely ’22 proved a formidable duo, with Farquhar in a playmaker role and McKneely converting 13 goals. Both made the All-Conference team. Midfielders Wyatt Olson ’22 and Jimmie Ward ’22 were excellent role models and helped freshmen MB Barrie ’25 and David Carrera ’25 improve. A strong defense was led by Adam Abdur-Rahman ’22, Blake Eastwood ’22, Benjamin Hulit ’22, and Jackson Pacylowski ’23.

GIRLS SOCCER The varsity squad experienced impressive milestones this season. The team saw exponential growth, fielding both varsity and junior varsity teams. Varsity was led by captains Corrin Grimes ’22, Jaclyn Marszal ’22, Neve O’Ferrall ’22, and Maggie Weisman ’22. Lizzie Batemen ’22, Arden Klipp-Lischner ’22, Stephanie Marszal ’22, and Josie Pell ’22 also served in leadership roles on and off the field. A memorable 1-0 win over Concordia Prep during homecoming was a highlight. The junior varsity team was led by Brenna Baim ’24, Monique Diaz-Mackey ’24, Natalie Eastwood ’24, and Katie Gorski ’24. Lilly Fortin ’24 was selected to the IAAM All-Conference team for her stellar goal performance, yielding several shutout games.

GIRLS TENNIS The team had a successful season, winning four team matches. Singles players Sydney Monaco ’24 and Trishima Sharma ’25, and doubles team Natalie Dent ’23 and Mia Fortin ’23 all posted winning records, defeating tough opponents with more experience. Doubles teams Taylor Monaco ’22 and Olivia Dayhoff ’24 and Rebecca Mello ’23 and Kathryn Poletti ’24 improved tremendously. Despite having only eight players—including four first-year players—the team fought hard every match and were only two individual wins away from having a winning record. The team is young, but the future looks bright with all but one player returning.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL This volleyball season was a success! The team became more confident in their skills and abilities in the sport and finished as one of the top teams making it to the semifinals. Tiffany Blakely ’24 led the team in kills, while Zinnia Pickett ’25 led in serves, Amber Garcia ’22 led in assists, and Morgan Miller ’25 led in digs. Elizabeth Oyebode ’22 was named to the All-Conference team and was an asset on and off the court. It will be hard saying goodbye to our seniors, who we will miss, but we are so excited for this next season and what accomplishments the team will make in the forthcoming year!
