Dundee United launch investigation into conduct of two of their players following information received by the club.

ASHTON Lane became a crime scene earlier this week, as Celtic goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska was attacked and left with two black eyes and a head injury.

Zaluska, 32, was assaulted whilst on a night out in the West End of

Glasgow with his wife. Witnesses told police that he was knocked unconscious during the attack.

Police were called to the scene in Ashton Lane in the early hours of Monday morning.

The Celtic goalie required medical treatment after suffering a head injury and blood loss, but was back at training with the team on Tuesday.

Police investigating the attack had refused to confirm rumours that another Premiership player was involved, but Dundee United released a statement later in the week on their official website that

confirmed they were launching their own probe into the incident.

The statement reads: “Dundee United Football Club has commenced an internal investigation into the conduct of two of its players following information received by the Club.

“The Club will make no further comment at this stage.”

The Tannadice outfit did not reveal the players’ identities or the reason for the probe.

United’s Mark Wilson was earlier reported to have said he had tried to “calm a matter down” in Ashton Lane on the night in question.

The player then released a statement through a spokesperson, which read: “There has been a lot of publicity surrounding events on Sunday night in Ashton Lane.

Alan Humphrey jailed for ‘brutal’ murder of wife

A MAN who beat and strangled his wife, and then later boasted about it in a pub, has been jailed for life for her murder.

Alan Humphrey, 56, attacked 49-yearold Angela Humphrey at her home in Quarrywood Avenue, in the Barmulloch area of Glasgow, on 21 February. Her body was found in the flat days later after relatives called police.

Following his conviction at the High Court in Glasgow, Humphrey was told he must serve a minimum of 19 years in prison before he can apply for parole.

Woman sexually assaulted in Clarkston

POLICE are appealing for information following a sexual assault on a 29 year-old woman in Clarkston, East Renfrewshire, on Saturday 18th of October.

The woman was walking in the area of Bull Road near to Church Road, Clarkston between 10.30pm and 11pm. The suspect at this time was walking his black labrador dog. He then briefly engaged the victim in conversation prior to the assault.

The suspect is described as being

white, aged 40 to 60 years, short in height, approximately 5’2” - 5’3” and with short dark hair.

Detective Sergeant Jane Drysdale, at Pollok Police Office stated:

“We are carrying out significant enquiries into this incident and we would like to speak to anyone who was in this area at the time of the attack or may have some information which can help us identify the suspect.”

A TEENAGE boy has been arrested following the alleged rape of a 15 year-old girl as she walked home in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire.

The 16-year-old male is expected to appear from custody at Airdrie Sheriff Court today (Friday 24th October) The girl was said to have been attacked by one of two males who approached her in the town’s Beechwood Road shortly before midnight on Saturday 11th October.

Police were called after the girl returned home.

Missing person appeal POLICE at Renfrewshire & Inverclyde Police Division are looking for information which could assist in tracing Ryan McCann from Paisley, who has been reported missing.

Man dies after being hit by train A MAN died after being hit by a train near Carluke on Wednesday.

The incident led to delays in rail services from Lanark to Milngavie and Dalmuir. Train operator ScotRail flagged up the incident on its Twitter feed shortly after 4pm.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said the man’s death was not being treated as suspicious.

FANS of hugely popular BBC comedy show Still Game will be delighted this week, as it was announced the cast are to return to TV screens in November with an hour-long version of their recordbreaking live show.

The reunion of the sitcom for a 21-night run at Glasgow’s Hydro arena, which finished two weeks ago, was watched by more than 200,000 people.

A shortened version of the show will be shown on BBC One Scotland on Friday 7 November at 9pm with the full show being

released on DVD later next month.

Forty-four episodes of Still Game were broadcast over six series from 2002, which starred Ford Keirnan and Greg Hemphill as Jack Jarvis and Victor McDade, the two foul-mouthed pensioners spending their days disreputably in the fictional Glasgow housing scheme of Craiglang.

Kiernan and Hemphill, still only 52 and 44, are much younger than the characters they portray, despite it being seven years since the TV show was last recorded.

Expert calls for city centre homes to put heart back into Glasgow A LEADING academic has urged Glasgow to consider providing more homes for city centre living.

He added: “We should start to reuse existing buildings as housing. The builders of Victorian warehouses did not think they would become penthouse flats, but they did.

Mr Bellingham told The Evening Times: “This might mean the existing dominance of retail space in the city centre is no longer required, which creates an issue around how we re-use that space in the future.

“The same thing could happen to modern office and retail spaces, and it would be useful for city centre planners to look at that.

“The last thing you want in the city centre is lots of vacant space.

“There are some city centres which are pretty much dead in the evening, because the shops are closed and there is nothing much going on.”

“I think change is inevitable and the fact is, the centre of Glasgow is already changing. Change is always happening in the city and we need to be ready.”

Let’s say ‘aye’ to second-hand buys

A NEW standard has been founded to encourage Scots to buy second-hand, following news that most consumers remain unsure about buying reused goods.

Despite 83% of Scots claiming that they would buy second hand, only a fraction actually do so. A recent survey revealed that only 16% of 1600 Scottish adults have bought second hand furniture, with the majority (35%) choosing to buy second hand clothes.

The survey revealed some of the reasons why shoppers are sceptical about buying second hand, with 34% not sure about the safety of products, 30% apprehensive about cleanliness and quality being on the minds of 24% of those asked.

However, in a bid to change people’s mind about second-hand goods, Revolve – a quality mark introduced

by Zero Waste Scotland – will attempt to challenge those barriers to buying behavior. They are hoping to give confidence to the public that second-hand isn’t only cost-efficient and eco-friendly, it can also offer the highest quality.

The four stores joining the ‘revolve-ution’

The Revolve stamp of approval, a mark that will be evident in accredited organisations, is being introduced in stores that meet the required standards.

The aim is to give customers an ‘ata-glance’ assurance of good quality second hand products.

THE low cost store is keen to stress that donated items haven’t necessarily been actively used before, meaning that there are serious bargains to be had for canny buyers.

Thirty-one stores have already been Revolve-accredited in Scotland, with four of those based in the Glasgow area.

Memorial for people injured or killed in the workplace unveiled at Glasgow Green A CUSTOM made memorial, dedicated to those who have been killed or injured in the course of their work, has been unveiled at Glasgow Green.

The memorial was commissioned to highlight the preventable nature of most workplace accidents and ill health, and to support campaigns promoting improvements in workplace safety.

The design was chosen following a number of ideas put forward by students from Glasgow Secondary Schools at the last Art Summer School at Castle Toward on the Isle of Bute.

Opeth, first loves and nail polish I’M going to start with an honest and frank confession: Opeth have been my favourite band for over a decade now and I can’t possibly be objective or impartial here. With that said, here’s a critical review of their latest live performance...

The Swedish five-piece returned to a packed O2 ABC for the first time in 2 years. They walked on stage and played some songs, it was awesome.

10/10 - Great stuff. In fact, they were every bit as good as the first time I saw them as a wide-eyed teenager back in 2003 at The Garage.

Speaking of firsts, a discarded bottle of nail varnish weirdly made me think about my first ever girlfriend the other day.

It was a brutal reminder of love’s everchanging motions. Her name was Danica (exotic, I know). Like Opeth, she was as mesmerising as she was brutal.

We were in primary school at the time and both aged 11.

During a school disco somebody had the brilliant idea to play the first Spice Girls album in its entirety. Of course nobody objected, everyone loved that debut. Anyway, towards the ballad filled conclusion of the album, I was approached for a dance by my classmate Danica. Not having a clue how to dance without looking like I was having a fit, I simply stood nervously in front of her and swayed. I had known Danica for years and never noticed her. I was 11 of course, I’d only ever ‘noticed’ Jet from Gladiators up until this point, and even then I don’t think I knew what it was I was ‘noticing’.

I had this instant feeling I was going to sign up for bad mortgage and get a dog with this girl. I could just tell.

For the next few weeks we were practically inseparable. We’d ride our bikes around our hometown and do other good wholesome childhood activities.

I’m sure we played tennis once. We must have accumulated a good solid 3 hours of hand-holding over the course of our brief whirlwind romance.

For her birthday, I had bought her a small bottle of nail varnish and some brightly coloured rubber bangles, which had been fashionable at the time. My pocket money was £2 a week so I spent the lot on my new beloved, knowing it would be worth it. Alas, she never received her fabulous presents, as I was unceremoniously dumped as soon as she came back from a fortnight-long family holiday somewhere abroad. She had changed. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but she was different. She had grown cold.

Broken-hearted and dejected, I threw away the nail varnish and snapped the rubber bands. I had given her 5 weeks of my life, and it was all over with the click of her fingers.

It’s been the better part of 20 years since that day and I don’t think I’ve ever come to terms with what happened. A whole week’s pocket money! Giant Snow Leopard spotted In North Glasgow Park IT’S not every day you’ll see a snow leopard in the middle of a Glasgow park.

Well, actually, now you can as the latest in a series of sculptures commissioned to celebrate the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games was this week unveiled in Springburn Park.

The new feature - a giant snow leopard - was hand-carved by Glasgow sculptor Robert Coia as part of the council’s legacy initiative that centres on a twin scheme looking to pair schools and parks in the city with other countries and regions of the Commonwealth.

The snow leopard marks Springburn Park’s twinning with Asia and has been placed in the grounds of the peace garden.

The giant carving, depicted sitting on a rock, is twice the size of a real snow leopard.

Native to the high mountains of Central Asia, the animal is a rare sight, with an estimated 6,000 left in the wild. Due to illegal hunting and habitat loss the numbers are declining.

Councillor Archie Graham, Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games, joined pupils from the nearby Balornock Primary School for the unveiling.

Second university meningitis scare A STUDENT of Glasgow Kelvin College is the latest to be treated in hospital with a suspected case of meningitis.

A RARE SIGHTING: The Snow Leopard is now at home in Springburn Park

He said: “School pupils across Glasgow have been working on a variety of innovative legacy projects over the last few years. The parks twinning initiative has given our young people the chance to find out more about their city’s parks and open spaces as well as the different commonwealth countries and links we share.

“These magnificent sculptures will be a lasting legacy and feature in our parks for many years to come.”

The snow leopard is the tenth sculpture to be installed as part of the legacy initiative. The rest of the impressive artworks can be seen in public parks throughout the city.

All the sculptures are made entirely of recycled timber from fallen, damaged trees and feature a bronze resin copper colour Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Legacy logo.

The student, who attends the college’s Springburn campus, is said to be responding well to treatment for the deadly bug.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said close contacts of the student had been given health advice and treated with antibiotics where appropriate.

The news of a second possible outbreak comes after two students at Strathclyde University were diagnosed with meningitis last week.

All students and staff at Glasgow Kelvin College have been sent an email directing them to information and advice on the disease.

“The Public Health Protection Unit takes all cases of meningococcal disease very seriously and takes prompt action.”

The NHS say symptoms of the deadly big can include: fever, severe headache, painful joints, dislike of bright lights, stiff neck, nausea and vomiting and drowsiness or confusion.

Two thirds of people who contract the disease develop a rash or red and purple spots on the body. The rash is distinctive as it does not disappear when pressed on with an object, such as a glass.

Three forced to climb onto roof after tenement fire

THREE people were forced to climb to safety on the roof of a building after a fire broke out inside a block of flat in Glasgow’s Southside.

Fire and Rescue Services tackled the blaze at the three-storey tenement block in Pollockshields on Tuesday night.

A MAN has been left with severe leg injuries after he was attacked in the street by a driver with a metal bar.

The 36-year-old victim was walking on a footpath in Kilbeg Terrace, Arden, in the Southside area of Glasgow on Saturday.

A man got out of a silver BMW as the victim walked past, between 6pm and 7pm, and struck him repeatedly on the legs with a metal bar.

The suspect then got back in his car and drove off in an unknown direction.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to the Victoria Infirmary where he has been treated for severe injuries to his legs. Hospital staff described his condition as stable earlier this week.

The suspect is described as a white man, aged

between 30 to 40 years, around 5ft 7 tall, stocky built with either a bald head or very short hair. He was wearing a top with a dark collar and jeans.

Detective constable Ewan Gilmour, Pollok CID, said: “This was a very vicious attack which has left the 36-year-old man with extensive damage to his legs.

“At this time we have not established any motive for this attack and we are currently examining CCTV footage in an effort to identify the culprit.

“I’d like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or anyone who may have seen the silver BMW car in the vicinity of Kilbeg Terrace on the evening of Saturday October 18.”

Three fire crews attended the scene on Albert Drive where they extinguished the fire and made sure the building was empty.

The three people made their way onto the roof to get away from the blaze, nobody was injured.

An investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the fire.

An SFRS spokesperson said: “Firefighters reached the incident within six minutes and discovered a fire within the communal close on the ground floor.

“They quickly extinguished it using a high pressure jet and after putting out the flames they remained in attendance to make sure everyone was accounted for and also ventilate the building.

“A fire within a close is always extremely serious as the toxic smoke produced can trap people in their homes and even enter properties some distance from the flames.

“Our message to everyone is to help reduce the risk by making sure communal areas, landings and stairwells are always kept clear of items that could be involved in a fire or that could impede people’s escape.

“When fire does strike early warning is vital to preventing injuries and deaths and minimizing the damage to property.

“We would again appeal for everyone to make sure their home is protected by working smoke alarms.”

Woman assaulted in ‘entirely unprovoked’ attack POLICE are continuing enquiries and appealing for information after a woman was assaulted in an “entirely unprovoked” attack.

The 21-year-old was assaulted in the early hours of the morning last Thursday (16 Oct) on London Road in the Bridgeton area as she was walking home from Glasgow city centre.

Police Scotland said a woman approached the victim and assaulted her at around 3.30am. The suspect then made off the in the direction of Anson Street.

Police are keen to trace a “Good Samaritan”, a nearby driver, who they say tried to help the victim.

The suspect is described as aged around 40, around 5ft 4” tall and was wearing a black and grey headscarf, a three quarter length white jacket and knee high black boots.

Honour for Glasgow’s Victoria Cross Hero A BRAVE war veteran who saved the lives of fellow soldiers during the First World War was this week honoured at a remembrance event near where he lived.

Private Henry May, who received the Victoria Cross medal for his acts of bravery, was remembered at the special ceremony outside the People’s Palace on Wednesday 22.

A paving stone in memory of the Bridgeton soldier was unveiled by the city’s Depute Lord Provost Gerry Leonard outside the museum.

It is the second in a series of stones to be laid in the city as a permanent reminder of the valour of Glaswegian servicemen awarded the Victoria Cross during the Great War as part of Centenary events across the country.

Police release CCTV 2000 music mad image after serious fans wanted for huge Hydro show assault POLICE have this week released an image of a man they believe may be able to assist with an ongoing enquiry into a serious assault.

MTV is looking for 2000 of Scotland’s most enthusiastic music fans to be cast as part of the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards in Glasgow.

The assault took place in Summerston, Glasgow, on Thursday, May 15, earlier this year.

From 10am – 8pm on Saturday, November 1 and Sunday, November 2, the MTV EMA team will be at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro to look for eager music fans who want to be oncamera and be part of the massive show.

A 35-year-old man was seriously injured during the assault on Gorstan Street, near the Asda store, at around 9am.

The suspect then headed off in the direction of Arrochar Street towards Invershiel Road.

Officers are keen to speak to the man in the CCTV image as they believe he may be able to assist with their enquiries.

He is described as being white, around 5ft10 in height and of slim build.

At the time, he was wearing dark trousers, dark shoes and a dark coloured hooded top with yellow stripes on the arms.

Number of bankrupt Scots is decreasing THE number of Scots made bankrupt is now at its lowest level since April 2008, according to new statistics.

Data has been revealed by the Accountant in Bankruptcy (AiB) reporting personal and company insolvencies in Scotland for the second quarter of 2014-15. The figures show that personal insolvencies, which include both bankruptcies and protected trust deeds (PTDs), fell by

12.5 per cent on the same period of the previous year.

There were 1,654 awards of bankruptcy this quarter, down 5.8 per cent on the previous quarter and 3.9 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the previous year. This represents the lowest number of bankruptcies awarded since the fourth quarter of 2007-08, the last quarter before access to bankruptcy was widened by the introduction of the Low Income Low Asset (LILA) route.

The number of people choosing to enter the statutory debt management solution, the Debt Arrangement Scheme (DAS), has decreased as 1,156 cases were approved, down 8.3 per cent from the previous quarter and down 1.2 per cent on the same period of the previous year. A total of £9.4 million was repaid through this Scheme in the second quarter of 2014-15.

Unemployment figures ‘lowest in six years’ THE number of unemployed youths in Scotland has fallen to the lowest in six years, it has been revealed.

Data has been released by the Office for National Statistics which reported that the rate of young people without jobs stood at 16.7% between June and August, 5.6% lower than a year ago.

There are now 72,000 unemployed young people in Scotland - a drop of 29,000 on the same period last year.

The number of young people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance also fell over the year by 9,900 to 20,200.

First Minister Alex Salmond is said

to be pleased with the statistics, stating: “These figures are another positive sign that youth employment in Scotland continues to increase and demonstrate that Scotland’s economic recovery is ongoing.

“Scotland now has a higher employment rate, lower unemployment rate and lower inactivity rate for young people than the rest of the UK... These figures also show that Scotland compares well internationally and remains among the top 10 best performing countries in the European Union for youth unemployment.”

THE Smith Commission to talk about more powers for the Scottish Parliament has had a “constructive” first meeting, the chairman said.

Lord Smith said representatives of Scotland’s main political parties had “committed to work together to achieve a positive outcome”.

The SNP, Labour, the Conservatives, the Lib Dems and the Scottish Green Party have all set out devolution proposals, with the commission expected to reach an agreement by 30 November.

Following its first meeting, the commission said it had agreed a set of principles for the cross-party talks, but added there would be no agreements announced in any policy area until it had considered submissions from the public.

Members of the public and Scotland’s civic bodies have until 31 October to submit their views.

AN inquiry into the rape conviction of footballer Ched Evans is to be fast-tracked by the body that examines potential miscarriages of justice.

Evans was found guilty in April 2012 of raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room the previous May. The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) has said its investigation into the case could begin within weeks.

The former Sheffield United player was released from prison on Friday after serving half of a five-year sentence.

The Wales international denied the offence, which took place in a hotel near Rhyl, north Wales, but was found guilty by a jury at Caernarfon Crown Court.

The commission said the fact the investigation could begin in weeks rather than the usual months is not an indication of how strong his case may be.

Weird of the Week.. Canada’s capitol Idiot boils face for amusement of no-one under attack

WHETHER or not you joined in with Facebook craze, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, over the summer - or just found it incredibly annoying - there is no doubt that it did a lot of good in raising both cash and awareness for charities all around the world.

The same cannot be said for would-be internet ‘star’ and general attention seeker Sean Sauce, who this week started (and hopefully ended) the rival Boiling Water Challenge. The same ‘ice bucket’ rules apply – take a large container of water and pour it over your head for the apparent amusement of others. But ‘Danger Sean’ – self-appointed king of moronic one-upmanship - swaps out ice cubes for flesh bubbling scorching water. What could possibly go wrong?

The idiotic American posted a video of the stunt on YouTube showing him throw a saucepan of scalding water all over himself,

instantly turning his skin bright red and screaming for a friend to douse him with cold water.

As of this writing, there was no confirmation about any injuries sustained, but I’d imagine he needed some soothing cream and a long overdue psychological screening.

Commentators took to Sauce’s Facebook page to question the legitimacy of the video, pointing out that no steam can be seen rising from the water pot. Real or not, it’s quite obvious this should not be tried by anyone else.

Luckily it seems as though the craze has died before it could even get started though, as dopey Sean forgot to pass on the necessary friend nominations crucial to continuing the dangerous game.

Probably for the best then.

Sauce proudly told friends on Facebook: “Break.com labelled me as the world’s biggest idiot”.

Well you’ll be delighted to know that we all agree Sean.

Oscar Pistorius begins jail sentence

A CANADIAN man, said to be a convert to Islam, is being investigated as a possible suspect after a soldier was shot and killed at a war memorial and dozens of shots were fired inside the country’s parliament.

The building went into lockdown as a police operation was underway to make sure the city was safe.

It is not clear how many gunmen were involved in the attack, which has been condemned by both British Prime Minister David Cameron and US President Barack Obama.

At one stage police told the AFP news agency that up to three shooters were feared to be on the roof of the building, while a spokesman later said they were looking for two suspects.

Earlier this week, he was driven to Pretoria’s Kgosi Mampuru prison where he is expected to be housed in the hospital wing.

Judge Thokozile Masipa gave Pistorius a five-year jail sentence for culpable homicide, but cleared him of murder.

His defence said it expected him to serve about 10 months, with the remainder under house arrest. His family say he will not appeal.

The parents of Reeva Steenkamp told the BBC they were happy with the sentence and relieved the case was over.

Prosecutors had called for a minimum 10-year term, and the defence had argued for community service and house arrest.

Mr Margerie, 63, chief executive of the French oil firm, was killed in the crash along with three crew members.

Russian investigators have alleged that the driver of the snowplough was drunk at the time, but his family has denied this.

The Russian authorities have launched a criminal investigation. Mr Martynenko, 60, was detained after the crash, which took place in poor weather at Vnukovo airport, southwest of Moscow, at around midnight on Monday.

CHANCES are, if you were in Glasgow city centre this week, you may have seen a solitary tent pitched in George Square.

cold, onsetting winter weather for a whole seven days in the hope of raising awareness of the terrible levels of poverty across the city.

The protest occupation started last

week, on the day it was announced that one in three children in Glasgow were living in poverty, a statistic that the charity worker finds utterly unacceptable. During his time working with underprivileged people, he explains that he’s seen

the effect that poverty can have at its appalling worst.

“Some of the sights in Glasgow I see can only be described as horrific,” he says, “There are people out there having to make the choice whether to eat or heat, that’s the decision they’ve got.

“There are young children who are actually looking forward to going to school, not so they can learn, but because they can finally eat.”

An unsettling thought that most would perhaps try to avoid, the reality is that

there are many people in Glasgow, and around the rest of the world, who are going hungry this evening.

Darren, who works alongside his father Andrew in promoting the cause of Glasgow’s Needy, is trying to take steps to see an end to food shortages.

The organisation is perhaps best known for recently holding collections for their food bank, also in George Square. Darren points out that those who need help needn’t be shy to ask for it.

The campaign was such a success that they were contacted by charitable organisations in West Lothian, Inverness, Dundee and Edinburgh about holding a similar event across the country.

Despite bringing in over £60,000 worth of food for families and individuals living in poverty, Darren says that food banks should not be a long term solution to the problem and that tough government action is needed to see an end to the city’s impoverishment.

“I think that for me to continue to run that food bank every day would just be completely absurd. I don’t want to be running a food bank, because we shouldn’t need one. I don’t want to be getting up every day and doing it as though it’s normal.

“Food banks in Glasgow in 2014, for me, is a nonsense. I think poverty in Glasgow is a man-made problem. This isn’t East Africa, there isn’t a drought or anything. This is a land of plenty.”

“The food bank is the humanitarian side of Glasgow’s Needy,” he says, “this is our political side,” he confirms, explaining his protest. Just weeks after hundreds of people joined Darren and his father in that fruitful food drive, he’s back on George Square, and this time he wants officials to take notice.

For this entire week, the backdrop sight of Darren’s tent has been the Glasgow City Council Chambers.

“I went to the G8 Summit and camped out in protest against the leaders of the world,” he adds, “I went to NATO, and protested there. I thought it was probably time to make a stand in my own city, in my own back yard.”

Darren has kept supporters up-todate of his experiences by posting video blogs each morning throughout the week on Facebook and Twitter.

Within days, lack of sleep from uncomfortable conditions and plummeting temperatures outside were visually taking their toll on him.

Perhaps a grim illustration of those he’s trying to help, it makes his efforts all the more important.

He has, of course, been helped out a lot by the people of Glasgow. He says that the public’s reaction to his plight has been “unbelievably overwhelming”.

“I’m really humbled,” says Darren with sincerity, “I must have spoken to thousands of people over the past few days. People have been coming up and asking questions and showing a lot of support.

absolutely freezing. I knew it was going to be cold, but it was cold and I was lying there in the tent thinking ‘Why did I say a week? Why didn’t I just say three days?’, and then two people walked past at around half

poverty in this country is shocking’, and I realised my goal had already been reached, people were talking about it. Anything else for the week will just be a bonus.”

The charity worker says that people around the city have helped him through his arduous ordeal by bringing him hot drinks and warm clothing to wear, which he says has “taken the edge” off the cold.

The protest caught the eye of SNP deputy leader in the city council, Councillor Billy McAllister, who agreed to camp with Darren on Friday night. Gaining the attention of council officials is of massive importance to Darren.

“Once we get them talking we’ll get the rocking,” he says with a grin.

After a long, but ultimately successful, week Darren took to Twitter to explain he wasn’t heading home just yet after all. On Tuesday he said: “That’s 7 days done. I’m staying one more night in respect to all the people around the world living in poverty.

END POVERTY NOW.” With the protest coming to a close, Darren and the Glasgow’s Needy team will now be focussing attention on their annual Christmas appeal, which aims to collect toys, selection boxes and warm clothes for some of Glasgow’s most underprivileged kids and adults.

“I’ve got plans for the future,” says Darren, “I’m not going away, Glasgow’s Needy is not going away.

I will not fail Glasgow, ever.

“We’re like a bus, and people are constantly jumping on. As long as they continue, no-one can stop us.

“

Cathedral House Hotel, John Knox Street THE 19th-century Scottish baronialstyle hotel, complete with turrets, is located in the historic part of City, opposite Glasgow Cathedral.

Overlooking another of our “Most Haunted” – the Glasgow Necropolis – the hotel was built in 1877 and used as a hostel for inmates released from the nearby Duke Street Prison.

Reports of ghostly sightings are common here, with guests claiming to have seen children in the upstairs bedrooms and a ghost passing by on the spooky stairwell.

Glasgow City News Editor in Chief, Fiona McNicol, once worked here as a barmaid, and was told several tales of paranormal activity, including that of

a woman being followed into the toilet by an dark figure, only to realise there was no one else on the upstairs floor.

Fiona says, whilst she never physically saw anything herself, locking up along was an unpleasant and scary experience (although, in hindsight, she believes that could have been down to the punters).

Glasgow Subway THERE are scarier things to be seen on the Glasgow Subway than letting out time at the football.

The subway was built in 1896, and it’s rumoured that the engineers and builders who constructed its tunnels had to dig their way through burial sites and plague pits.

By the time it opened in December of that year, the network of tunnels and stations already had more than its fair share of ghost stories. It’s believed that there are around nine “ghosts” lurking beneath the city in the Subway network, including a childlike ghoul at West Street/Shields Road

that is described as being half boy, half animal and is often said to look like it is ‘devouring’ something.

Another famous Subway ghost is the Grey Lady, who is said to inhabit the platform and track area of Shields Road station.

She is thought to be the ghost of a young woman who died falling onto the tracks in 1922. Workmen, employees and customers have reported hearing distant footsteps coming from the tracks at the station, as well as whispering and weeping.

Glasgow Necropolis PERHAPS the most famous of all ghostly Glasgow locations is the Necropolis – or ‘City of the Dead’ – situated on the hill alongside St Mungo’s Cathedral.

There are many stories set within the grounds of the Necropolis, which holds some 50,000 graves. One tale tells of a child-eating vampire, which apparently devoured a couple of local boys in the 1950’s whilst another talks of the most common sighting – that of the White Lady.

Visitors to the graveyard claim to have seen her floating through the cemetery at night, often accompanied by a white mist, and have heard whispering voices.

The Saracen Head The Arches Argyle Street Gallowgate WE’RE not entirely surprised this crops up again and again as one of the smaller, most haunted spots in Glasgow. Just stepping inside feels like you’ve been transported back in time. Everywhere you look there are artefacts from a distant time, and pictures of yesteryear. Built in 1755, the original Saracen Head stood across the road from its present location.

From Jacobite guns to a handwritten poem by Rabbie Burns, and perhaps most famously, the skull of Maggie - the last witch to be burned at the stake in Scotland - the whole place has an air of the supernatural about it.

ALTHOUGH it’s most often haunted by young, cool clubbers in search of the country’s top DJs, The Arches has a more sinister side to its story.

The pub is haunted by, amongst others, the ghost of a former owner, Angus Ross. The Ghost Finders Scotland team investigated the location and apparently found a level of paranormal activity that sent shivers up their spine. www.saracenhead.com

Located beneath Central Station, The Arches is supposedly home to a phantom girl dressed in old fashioned clothing. According to an investigation by the Glasgow Paranormal Investigators, they apparently recorded a lot of creepy things on a Dictaphone, including a man’s voice and another they believed to be that of the little girl in response to the question “Do you want to play?”

Creepy, but the spooky tales have done little to scare off Glasgow’s creatures of the night (the clubbers, obviously) as the Arches is still one of the most popular venues in the city. www.thearches.co.uk

Q. What is Club Noir?

A. A lavish burlesque club. Based in Glasgow. With elegant burlesque shows, and the most diverse welldressed audience you are likely to see in any of the top cities of the world.

Q. How did Club Noir begin?

A. I saw several amazing clubs, cabarets, fetish nights etc and thought “hey let’s do this in Glasgow”.

Business funding - don’t waste your time on the likes of Scottish Enterprise, Business Gateway etc - they are awful. The only jobs they are interested in creating are those for themselves. I’ve never heard anything good about them from anyone.

Q. What was the most difficult aspect of setting up your own company?

A. Staying true to your cause and not diluting it to appeal to the

masses. Most people thought burlesque was too, too naughty for them so they wouldn’t go, or wouldn’t want to be seen by others to go, wouldn’t tell anyone when they had been, etc, etc. So that made building the attendance figures more difficult. We could have diluted the show to make it more PG but we never did. The world has moved on since those days, and audience opinion of stuff like that has become more sophisticated (Ann Summers is on every high street, and 50 Shades of Grey has been read by everyone).

Another way we never diluted our brand was to allow jeans or trainers.

We lost many, many customers over the years because of that, but it’s also grown a more loyal following who are grateful for that quality.

CLUB NOIR: Co-owner, Tina Warren, performing as the Phantom of the Burlesque Club A. Do it. It won’t happen overnight, it may even take years before you can quit your employment. But it’s better than having a boss.

Q. What’s been the biggest achievement/highlight for Club Noir so far?

A. There are so many. But reaching our 10th anniversary this year, making us the longest running burlesque club in the world. That’s an achievement not only for us but for the good folks of Glasgow. Cheers to us.

Runes stones are small pieces of wood or stone and are both ancient and magical. When they are being made the rune master not only carves the symbols onto them they will also fill them with amazing and powerful energy too.

By tapping into this energy and the symbols the rune master can foretell what lies ahead as well as bringing forth information and messages as they cast them onto their cloth. Essentially they are a divination tool to enable the reader to see what is happening in and around a person’s life at any given time. You could also leave it at your front door to attract new finances in the door too.

Area –Movement Rune stone – Ehwas, known as the Yew tree

Some see this as the horse as it relates to moving either home or work place. It’s a fortunate talisman if you want to be on the move anywhere, to travel or even to get yourself a new vehicle so its not to be sniffed at. The power in this rune can bring about the changes that you need in any area of your life where movement it connected. For a house move it could help you to push the process on at a faster pace.

Area - Happiness Rune stone – Sowilo, known as the Sun We all need a little bit of sunshine and happiness in our lives and having this rune in a spread shows that light will shine where there has been struggle or challenge.

This is also a very spiritual rune and can assist you in linking with your spirit guides when you are in need of clarity or direction. To help energise this rune you can cleans it in salt water or leave it out in the light of the full moon.

Area - Upset Rune stone – Ansuz, known as Ancestral When there are issues and challenges what’s called for is clarity and communication to help shift things into a more positive way of working. This rune is a warrior, known for its positive slant on things and to come to your aid in times of need helping you to over come the emotional challenges you face. If you are experiencing problems carry the rune with you and send your worries and troubles to it. It could bring you light at the end of a dark phase.

There are times when we all get stagnated and kind of lose out way especially when it comes to work or career. You will want to break the cycles and bring in new challenges to allow you to grow and expand your knowledge. Jera is the rune that brings your desires that bit closer to you so that you are within arms length of touching them. It’s very much about out with the old and in with the new, you could find that you feel totally liberated from past feelings of stagnation and are looking at swift changes. Use the rune on any new application form – just lay it on top of it under the full moon and set your intention and leave the rest to it.

Area - Clearing Rune stone – Algiz, known as the Protector When it comes to negativity no one wants that in their life, we are all looking for positive shifts and the good vibes. Algiz is a rune of protection and it helps to create a barrier so that you can heal and get to a stronger, more emotional place. It is said to bring you closure to old and outdates things in your life, enabling you to move on with good spirits. This almost acts like a shield protecting you from unwanted issues and warding off that, which is not positive.

Ashton Lane, Glasgow, THERE’S a new badboy burrito shop in town, and they mean serious business.

They’re so serious, in fact, that (until your read this review or see for yourself) you’ll have absolutely no idea what you’re walking into – just like us.

Last Saturday night, on a pre-gig, hungerinduced crawl of Ashton Lane, myself and a couple of friends ended up standing outside Tomboy Burritos & Beer – staring at what appeared to be the menu, consisting only of burritos, nachos, quesadillas…and (as the name would suggest) beer and any form of drink that you can possibly imagine involving tequila.

Intrigued, we ventured upstairs to the first floor restaurant to find a hollowed out vintage bus (or truck, there was some debate as to its original use) being used as a bar and what appeared to be a food-cart in the corner.

It was only when we sat down at one of the wooden booths and heard the very busy waitresses calling out people’s names (Wiseman, to be precise) to collect orders that we realised this was going to be a different eating-out experience altogether.

A couple of menus on the table confirmed what we saw outside, you basically choose from a burrito, quesadilla or nachos and, after a quick glance over the ‘Rules’ – hanging handily on the wall, we filled in the order forms in front of us. The idea is, you write your name, choose one of the previously mentioned, add your choice of filling, sauce and then any extras by ticking the boxes on

the form. You then hand in at the bar, pay for it and watch whilst they cook it in front of you at the cart, before they call out your name when the order is ready. Simple, fun and way more entertaining that choosing from a standard menu.

I went for a Burrito with Winner Winner Chicken Dinner (shredded chilli chicken) filling and sour cream, guacamole and cheese extras. In the name of roundedreviewing, one of my friends decided to try the nachos and the other chose the quesadillas. We placed our orders, waited (momentarily) for our drinks (try a Tommy’s Margarita, £5, with tequila, lime and agave they are the perfect combination of tasty and lethal) and took a proper gander around the place. Exposed brick walls, clever branding (on literally everything, from the napkins that state “You’ll be needing this” to the “Tomgirl” toilets) and quirky touches make the place entirely different to anywhere else I’ve eaten out in Glasgow.

The nachos were ready first, then the quesadillas and finally my burrito, all arriving on silver, canteen-style trays, with mine wrapped in tinfoil and sealed with a Tomboy sticker (I’m telling you, everything is branded). Despite initially asking, “Eh, where is the cutlery” we soon got into the spirit of Tomboy’s finger food. I can honestly say it’s the best burrito I ever had outside of America…and huge! Which is impressive considering that all of their burrito options, no matter what you load them with, are £7.50.

We’d ordered, eaten and finished within about 30 minutes, but that suited us perfectly for trying to fit in food before heading out for the night. If you’re in the West End (or actually if you’re anywhere) and want nofuss, no-wait, delicious, American foodcart style finger food, you’d be insane to go anywhere else.

IT’S been voted Britain’s most popular Chinese restaurant, scooped two AA rosettes and landed a finalist spot on Gordon Ramsay’s The F Word.

For the past eight years, Chop Chop has been serving up Chinese cuisine in Edinburgh, gaining accolades from across the UK and racking up more than 20,000 loyalty members.

Now, the restaurant has decided to launch its brand across the UK, starting with a flagship restaurant in Glasgow’s Mitchell Street – due to open next month.

The restaurant is famous for its dumplings, with 95% of its customers ordering the dish which can be fried or boiled and filled with various meats and vegetables.

Other dishes on the menu include fried fish balls, crispy chicken, sweet and sour pork ribs and a variety of noodle based meals.

Gordon Ramsay raved about the handmade dumplings when he visited the restaurant in 2011 for an episode of the F Word.

Chop Chop is due to open in November at 41-43 Mitchell Street.

MURCIA may not be a region you’ve heard particularly much about, but that’s one of the reasons it’s so special.

A world away from the tourist laden beaches and 18-30 package holidays that consume the Costa del Sol, Murcia’s combination of rural beauty, fascinating history and chic cities makes it the perfection destination for those seeking more than just a tan from their holiday. And there’s no better place to experience all that Murcia has to offer than from the luxurious, five star resort of La Manga Club.

Located close to the historic and beautiful old-worldly town of Cartagena, and tucked in between the peaceful hills of the Murcian Mountains, the world famous golf resort, created by Gregory Peters, is a lesson in luxury and relaxation. Boasting an impressive five-star hotel , self-catering apartments, three golf courses, 28 tennis courts, a luxury spa and wellness centre, golf and tennis academies and over 20 restaurants and bars, the complex has seen some of the world’s best athletes and sports teams grace it’s rooms and pitches, including both the Scottish and English National Football teams.

Staying in the Hotel La Manga Club Príncipe Felipe, we had everything you would expect from a five star hotel, with an incredible view of La Manga Strip – the piece of land that separates the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor. The rooms were ridiculously decadent, with a bath big enough to fit an entire football team (which may have happened at some point, who knows) and every five star finishing touch you could dream of – from the expensive sheets to the champagne-filled mini-bar and the high-end toiletries.

Visiting in May, the resort was relatively quiet and we were told we didn’t have to worry too much about booking a restaurant for dinner. Our main problem was, with over 20 to choose from, we couldn’t decide what we were in the mood for. Did we want dinner at Amapola, on the spectacular terrace with a stunning view over the golf course,

or perhaps seafood at La Cala, nestled in a rocky outcrop with incredible views over the Mediterranean sea?

We eventually decided upon La Bodega, La Manga’s fantastic Spanish tapas restaurant, with a selection of the finest Spanish wines and a terrace near the Tennis Centre, right at the heart of La Manga Club complex.

Both the tapas and the wine were served in hearty measures and equally delicious. A trip to the Piano Bar and several more excellent glasses of Spanish wine later, we were ready to call it a night and fall into our perfectly luxurious king sized bed.

The next morning, we made our way down to the huge pool, which were delighted to find was completely deserted (low season definitely has it’s perks). With pool-side service (in high season, the pool-side bar is open, but when it’s not, you’ll have to make do with drinks being delivered to your side) we ordered a couple of cocktails and made ourselves at home on the sun loungers, with the only disturbance for the remainder of the day being from a group of local golfers also making the most of the quiet complex on its famous course.

The great thing about La Manga Club is the size and variety of breaks available. If you want to be occupied every minute of the day, you can be. You can golf, swim, ride, play… anything you like or…like us, you can simply sit by the pool and relax in your very own piece of five-star heaven.

PORTLAND’S LIVING ROOM: Pioneer Courthouse Square in Downtown Portland

WHETHER you go for the internationally famed roses, awardwinning coffee or the frequently TVdepicted “hipster” lifestyle, one thing’s clear – Portland is a city that’s easy to fall in love with.

Tourists and the local upper-middle class congregate in the South and North West districts, where you’ll find Downtown, The Pearl District, Nob Hill (often referred to as Snob Hill) and Goose Hollow. The West neighbourhoods hold most of the main sightseeing attractions and majority of popular (and often expensive) restaurants, bars and luxury shopping destinations. They’re also home to the swankiest of hotels, including brunch-must The Benson and the Nines – which features Portland’s most impressive rooftop bar on the 17th floor, Departure, with one of the best views in the city.

Most of Downtown’s action centres around Pioneer Courthouse Square - often referred to as Portland’s living room. It’s one of the best people watching spots in the city, and with one event or another taking place here on an almost daily basis, it’s a great jumping off point for getting to know the city or use as a base for exploring the surrounding blocks.

A short walk or a couple of hops on the Metro, will bring you to the South Park blocks, where you’ll find Portland’s main art galleries and the Oregon Historical Society Museum.

History buffs will love Oregon, My Oregon – the permanent exhibition in the latter that details the people that created the state as it is known today.

Coffee connoisseurs can get their fill of much more than Starbucks, although for those who can’t live without it, you’ll find plenty of them in Portland. With coffee shops on every corner, Portlanders take their daily fix very seriously and you’ll be spoilt for choice with

home roasters and exotic roasts. Stumptown Coffee Roasters on SW 3rd is one of the most popular…it’s a hipster hangout with exposed brickwork, an impressive choice of roasts and a continually surprising music collection but we found a few lesser known joints, such as Coffeeshop Northwest and Lotus & Bean well worth a visit too.

Some of the best vintage shopping can be found in South East Portland. Buffalo Exchange is a vintage and label lovers heaven, where you can literally swap your old stuff for whatever takes your fancy. Around here you’ll also find Red Light Clothing – an interesting choice of name but with great bargain buys.

South East is also home to some of the best bars, restaurants and music venues, including the Doug Fir and Noble Rot, with amazing views of the city from its fourth floor balcony. With a music venue in the basement (Scotland’s own Biffy Clyro played here, and according to the barman, stayed around for a drink of two after)an outside seating area complete with a fire and deck chairs and a very attractive happy hour menu, this is a popular weekend spot.

Portland’s also home to some of the most beautiful inner-city parks in the states, including the Japanese Gardens within the immense Washington Forest Park. Five acres of the proclaimed “most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan” you can spend a huge amount of time wandering through gardens before stopping to pick up a souvenir on the way out. Wander down pass the busy tennis courts and you’ll arrive in the International Rose Test Garden – the origin of one of Portland’s other nicknames - Rose City. In the Spring, the annual Rose Festival takes place as the city becomes a mecca for tourist looking to see the award-winning roses in bloom.

IF you happen to have £150 thousand just kicking about doing nothing, you might want to consider buying the ultimate combo in technology and vanity, a jewel-encrusted smartphone.

The ‘slightly’ over the top ‘Emerald Night’ phone is the creation of jewellers, Savelli Genève, who have a range of desirable, but expensive products. The Emerald Night can be made up of your choice of an 18-carat gold casing encrusted with diamonds, sapphires, or emeralds. If that’s not enough bling you can also add other luxury finishes like ostrich, python or iguana leather.

The phone runs with the latest Android OS, but no other tech specifications have been released. I sincerely doubt anyone seriously considering buying it will care if it’ll be able to run Angry Birds or not though.

In an interview with CNN Alessandro Savelli, CEO of the Geneva-based jeweller, made the purchase sound fairly justified. He said:

Fans will be glad to know that there are legal ways to circumvent Netflix’s location restricted content, but due to the moral grey area it creates, we cannot print here. Hint, use Google.

The sitcom, which ran between 1994 and 2004, was one of the world’s biggest TV shows and launched the careers of Hollywood stars: Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer...well, you know who was in Friends, I’m not listing them all.

While no ‘On Demand’ service currently offers the show in the UK, episodes are shown on weekdays on Comedy Central.

Minecraft ultrabuild revealed IN a combination of possible artistic genius, and having had way too much time on his hands, American art student Duncan Parcells this week unveiled his two yearlong Minecraft project; the impressive ‘Titan City’.

The fictional city, based on New York, was built using the massively popular video game. Titan is made up of 4.5 million blocks, contains 96 fully constructed buildings, and is fully explorable.

Parcells, aka ColonialPuppet online, created the impressive build on the Xbox 360 version of the game, but has since shifted production to the PC edition hoping to speed up further progress. He plans to add an airport to the city as soon as possible. I guess he’ll have

to build a bunch of other cities to make use of it though?

I played it once a few years ago. I made a small wooden shack and then accidentally burned it to the ground trying to install a fireplace without putting stones around it. God only knows the patience this guy must have had these past two years.

Minecraft was created by indie developer Markus Persson in 2009.

It quickly became a cult hit after PC beta builds gained acclaim online. A final version was released in 2011 across various platforms, where it continues to be updated.

The game has sold over 54 million copies worldwide.

Last month, Minecraft parent developer Mojang were bought by Microsoft for an estimated £1.5 Billion.

The Unofficial Parents Hand book: Underage Drinking

WHEN I was at school, underage drinking was pretty much confined to the 15-17 age group. It all seemed pretty harmless; drinking at parties if a friend’s parents went away on holiday, having a few cocktails before a High School dance or sneaking into the local pub, only to be thrown out a short time later.

Super Smash Bros 3DS

ARRIVING amidst a mass of hype and fanfare, Nintendo have just released the first half of their new Super Smash Bros. duo set, the much anticipated Super Smash Bros. 3DS. Despite being available for just over a week, the game has already managed to chalk up countless favourable reviews. From casual observers to dedicated gaming organisations, it seems no-one is able to see fault in this newest iteration of Nintendo’s biggest franchises.

Except me, apparently.

Don’t get me wrong, SSB:3DS is a wonderful game, and every bit as fun as the original N64 version released almost 15 years ago. The main problem is that it IS almost exactly the same game. 15 years and several renditions later, there is very little difference on show here. Features which were previously included to add some depth, such as the ‘trip’ system 2008’s

SSB Brawl on the Wii, have been removed in order to make the game easier to pick up and play. That’s all very well, but when you strip back a product to its bare bones, where it’s indistinguishable from its original form, then it’s an absolute cheek to try and charge your customers for a brand new full priced game when it clearly isn’t.

For those of you unaware of what SSB is as a series, I’ll explain: It’s a fighting game featuring characters from pretty much every major Nintendo franchise you can think of (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, etc.) and some outside ones too (Pokemon, Megaman, etc.)

Ever wondered if Princess Zelda could take Mario’s Princess Peach on in armed combat? Well that’s what SSB lets you do. Also, of course she could, she’s Zelda.

She can do anything.

The second half of the ‘new’ series, Super Smash

Bros. Wii U, will be released in December.

Of course, being far more powerful than the 3DS, the Wii U version will be able to display far superior HD graphics than its handheld cousin can and has the potential to include far more features. So far though, Nintendo have announced the characters and stages will be the same for both versions. So don’t get your hopes up. Look forward to my review of that too then I suppose. I did just beat Yoshi half to death with an oversized hammer and a lightsaber. Maybe it’s worth my money after all.

‘In the Heat of the Moment’ –

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds HAVING just confirmed a UK, Ireland and European tour, and with the release of thunderous new single “In the Heat of the Moment”, it’s safe to say Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are back with hefty punch.

Sounding a bit like some long forgotten Oasis track, with Noel’s unmistakable vocals taking on something of an other-worldly, hypnotic feel, the new single from upcoming album ‘Chasing Yesterday’ lyrically tells the tale of someone you can rely on after all is said and done. The chorus line - “In the heat of the

moment, When the thunder and lightning come, I know that you’ll be by my side” – is oddly addictive and guaranteed to be stuck in your head (along with the “na na na na naaaa’ hook) for days to come.

The tour, which includes a date at the SSE Hydro in March 2015, sold out in less than 10 minutes. It looks like next year will be a great year for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, and rightly so!

George Ezra Saturday 18th October, QMU Glasgow, with support from Rhodes

TWENTY-one year old chart topper George Ezra’s rise to fame has this month culminated in a largely sold out UK headline tour. His ever growing popularity was evidenced by the huge snaking queue outside of the QMU in Glasgow ahead of his gig last Saturday night. It seems that everyone, from students and young professionals, to a more mature crowd have caught ‘Ezra fever’.

Support for Ezra’s ‘Wanted on Voyage’ gig was provided by another excellent emerging British talent, Rhodes, whose hauntingly beautiful vocals, soaring high notes and stripped back acoustic guitar playing, perhaps deserved more attention from the impatient and high spirited crowd than it received. Never the less, tracks including ‘Breathe’, ‘Your Soul’ and ‘Raise Your Love’ sounded outstanding in the intimate and packed out venue and Rhodes own headline tour this month will undoubtedly be a resounding success.

The main event began in typical Ezra fashion, with the man himself and his three piece band skipping onto the stage to a bizarre musical accompaniment, that wouldn’t have sounded out of place at a pantomime. Then it was down to business…

Ezra set list cleverly mixed well known singles and album tracks including ‘Cassy O’,’ Blame it on Me’and of course, the ever popular, and impossible to get out of your head, hit single ‘Budapest’ with lesser known tracks like ‘Spectacular Rival’ and the beautifully laid back ‘Barcelona’. All of which were performed with passionate aplomb and accompanied by Ezra’s very special and unique ‘dancing style’, which really no words can do justice to. Performing tracks including ‘Leaving It Up to You’ and ‘Benjamin Twine’ solo, without the backing of his band, broke up the set nicely and showcased Ezra’s vocal talents, including the surprising falsetto chorus of ‘Leaving It Up to You’ which Ezra confessed he usually sings with a gospel choir (which, he would like to clarify, don’t just follow him around wherever he goes). The by now fully involved and energised crowd at QMU had a good go at supporting Ezra through this, with hilarious results and mixed success.

His musical performance more polished after a year of touring and performing at festivals, Ezra is the perfect showman, funny, down to earth and selfdeprecating, joking with the crowd and enjoying their reactions. Vocally Ezra’s voice is nothing short of spectacular, his deep bass baritone ringing out as he put everything into his performance.

After raucous calls for an encore Ezra reappeared wearing his own merchandise, a ‘Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go to Budapest’ t-shirt and performed his cover of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girl’s Just Want to Have Fun’, which he recently recorded for Radio One’s live lounge, and which is the perfect mix of parody and musical skill.

Ezra then closed with the thunderous ‘Did You Hear the Rain’ which shook the walls of the QMU and left the audience feeling that they had witnessed something really rather special.

Finally, and saving the best for last, the most amazing feature of the BMW i3’s driving experience has to be the single-pedal control. Even thought there is a brake and an accelerator pedal, it is possible to drive without using the brake pedal in normal driving conditions. The moment you take your foot off the accelerator the electric motor switches from drive to generator mode, feeding power into the lithium-ion battery. This recharging mode has the side effect of generating a precisely controllable braking motion, thus the car brakes itself.

£190m investment for Dagenham plant announced by Ford

Most drivers want ‘motorway test’ for all OVER HALF of British drivers think a specific motorway driving test should be introduced for all drivers, whether they are learning or already have a driving licence.

A survey has found 52% of drivers in the UK think this is needed now, with 70% of younger drivers aged 17-24-years old believing this move is required. This call comes as official figures show there was an increased number of road deaths and serious injuries on the UK’s motorways in 2013, up 14% on the previous year.

Women are more in favour of introducing a compulsory motorway driving test, with 64% thinking it should be mandatory, while 41% of men think it should become law.

The survey by Flexed also revealed older drivers

are less enthusiastic. Alex Wignall, of Flexed, said: ‘There has been a consensus amongst motorists for a long time that drivers should have to pass a test to drive on the motorway. This is not something which applies to solely young drivers, as the latest statistics suggest they are just as likely to be involved in a motorway accident as any other driver.

‘There are too many drivers of all ages who are inexperienced on motorways and are not familiar with the important differences which separate it from other types of driving. Our survey shows that there is support out there for the idea that all drivers, whether they have only just passed their test or whether they have been driving for years, should now have to pass a specific test before they are allowed to drive on the motorway.’

Tax discs selling for up to £1000 on eBay

SECURING JOBS: Over 300 jobs at the Ford plant in Dagenham will be secure because of the investment

FORD has secured over 300 jobs at their Dagenham plant this week, after it was announced the company is investing £190 million into the plant.

The funding is for the development and building of a new, ultra-low emission diesel engine – initially for use by commercial vehicles and then consumer cars.

Ford says the investment is in response to London Mayor Boris Johnson’s announcement of a planned ‘Ultra-Low Emission Zone’ in the capital and surrounding areas, meaning charges for anyone driving current diesels that are not Euro6 compliant.

With the pollution charges set to come in as early as 2020, Ford has sprung into action to invest in cleaner engines that will be exempt from the

emissions zone fines.

The announcement is the second phase of investment in the new engine programme, with the original £287 million going to producing the clean diesels for Ford commercial vehicles around the world.

SINCE tax discs were abolished on October 1st, hundreds of them have been appearing online on auction sites, with prices reaching into hundreds of pounds and even upward of £1000 in one case.

The Telegraph recently reported that the record for most expensive tax disc was broken by a quarterly issue from September, 1921, which

Celtic manager Deila feels sorry for Zaluska MANAGER Ronny Deila revealed his sympathy for Lukasz Zaluska after the goalkeeper was attacked in the street in Glasgow.

The Norwegian confirmed the 32-year-old Pole would squad for Thursday’s Europa League meeting with Romania’s Astra.

Zaluska was injured after an incident in the early hours of Monday morning.

“I’m sorry for him because it can be quite scary, but in my opinion he hasn’t done anything wrong,” he said.

“I don’t know what’s behind it and I don’t want to have an opinion on it before I know what’s happened.”

“This is a police matter now and we just have to see what’s happening,” said the manager.

Police are investigating the incident involving Zaluska but have not confirmed reports that any other Premiership players were involved.

IMPRESSIVE SUCCESS: Rocks Tommy Freeman in action against Leicester this week

STERLING Davis and his Glasgow Rocks’ players were celebrating their second successive scalp after following up last weekend’s Cup success against London Lions with an eye-catching league success against Leicester Riders.

They handed their opponents a first loss of the season and boosted their own prospects of muscling into the early title race thanks to a combined 42 points from frontcourt duo Tommy Freeman and Kieron Achara.

Without their influential guard Tyler Bernardini, the previously unbeaten Riders were always a little short on

firepower and the Rocks took full advantage.

There was little to choose between the sides in the first-half, with Rocks shading matters and it was when Sterling Davis hit a triple in the third period they looked like breaking the contest open at 53-43.

Riders hit back to get within five, but a 9-1 run approaching the midway point of the last quarter took Rocks clear again as they eased to an impressive success.

Mixed fortunes for Scots teams in British National League TEAMS from Caledonia and Portobello had mixed fortunes during round 2 of the British National Water Polo League at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh last weekend.

Of the regular Super Fives qualifiers, Portobello have work to do if they are to go through once again. After losing to Lancaster on day one in their home pool, City of Sheffield inflicted more damage, winning for the first time this season 13-12 after leading 8-4 at the halfway stage. A late Chris Howard goal secured both points for Sheffield after Portobello levelled at 12-12.

Portobello’s situation eased when they beat Manchester 7-5 in their third match of the weekend, but they still need points from testing matches at Cardiff against Cheltenham and Bristol Central to be secure, which means there will be much to play for when the men’s Division One

Thoughts of the Game City on easy Masochist.

Demented.

Insanity. Depressed. Bipolar.

Emotional. These are just some of the words my friends on Facebook used when I asked them to post the first thing that came into their heads when someone says the word “football.”

There is no other sport that can haul you so swiftly from one end of the emotional spectrum to the other. One of the guys posted the words “A Way of Life.” He’s right, but it’s a stressful one.

This article started out as an effort to find a title for another piece, but as I read some of the replies I thought it might be a good move to put these together.

Let’s talk fans for a minute. One guy used the words “committed” and “diehard”, but also used the word “mug.” He’s right. Football supporters are definitely taken advantage of by the clubs. Another guy wrote the words “ripped off.”

The word I got the most was “passion”, which is a double edged sword. It makes us crazy. There is an element of masochism in the football fan, and insanity is almost the default position for many I know!

Whilst I suspect a little tongue in cheek, it’s undoubtedly true that all of us are, to one degree or another.

Someone used the word “fun”, which has described some of the footballing I’ve watched over the years, but I had to acknowledge the occasional truth as expressed in another single word reply; “Mince.”

One guy said “frustrated”, which is a word nobody can argue with. Another said “hope”, that quintessentially Scottish word, which usually ends up in another answer; “disaster for Scotland.”

There was a lot of nostalgia. One looked back to the culinary delights of “pie and bovril at half time.” Another suggested “yir tablet n macaroon!”

Two said the word “identity”, which is absolutely crucial to understanding supporters. Another said “family and community.” ome said “hopeful”. Another said “melancholy”; two emotions from opposite ends of the scale.

Yet I think it’s hard to argue with one guy who suggested “tunnel vision”, and another who said “anxious”. Better even than those is the word “fickle.”

Is there a more perfect word to describe football fans than that?

GLASGOW City reached the Scottish Cup Final after a comfortable 4-0 victory over Hibernian at Ravenscraig with goals from Suzanne Lappin (2), Morgan Marlborough and Susan Fairlie.

Two goals in each half from the Cup holders kept City on course for an incredible 3rd treble in a row and their 11th successive domestic trophy, as they showed no signs of tiredness following their extra time dramatic Champions League win midweek.

City took the lead after 10 minutes when all time club top goalscorer Suzanne Lappin netted from the edge of the box. The Hibees had to look lively to not concede again soon after but good defending blocked successive goal bound shots from Susan Fairlie and then Morgan Marlborough.

The City support and players had a loud shout for handball when a HIbs arm blocked a Fairlie on target shot, but referee Hayley Irvine was not interested and waved play on. The Cup holders pressure for the second goal eventually paid off when full back Emma Black cut inside and fired a well hit shot, which came back off

If City dominated the first half, they controlled the second half with even greater poise. Excellent play from Nicky Docherty brought out a fine save from Hibs keeper Hannah Reid and HIbs survived again when a Marlborough shot came back off the post.

It seemed only a matter of time before the 3rd goal and it duly arrived on 67 minutes when Lappin headed home her second of the game. City then made it 4-0 when Susan Fairlie finished well into the bottom corner in injury time.

Commenting on the game, City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black

said, “When you play a semi-final you expect it to be quite tight but as the scoreline shows, we were pretty convincing. Especially pleasing was our game management and how well we passed the ball today and we are delighted to be in another final.”

City will face Spartans in the final after the Edinburgh side came back from 1 goal down to defeat Aberdeen 4-1.

Anna Signeul’s side hoping to repeat Cyprus Women’s Cup victory over Netherlands from March this year FIFA Women’s World Cup play-off semi-final first leg Scotland vs Netherlands Saturday 25th October 2014, 5:30pm, Tynecastle Stadium, Edinburgh SCOTLAND play The Netherlands this weekend, in the semi-final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 play-offs.

The home game takes place this Saturday, with the second leg being fought in The Netherlands on 29/30 October. The winner will go in to the twolegged play-off final against either Italy or Ukraine, on 22/23 and 26/27 November.

Scotland last faced The Netherlands at the Cyprus Women’s Cup in March, when a Lisa Evans hattrick and a Jennifer Beattie strike, sealed a 4-3 win for Anna Signeul’s side.

Scotland also defeated The Netherlands at the same tournament in 2013 (1-0) and 2012 (2-1).

Scotland go in to the play-offs at the end of a qualifying campaign in which the only points dropped were against world number five side Sweden. Scotland scored 37 goals, conceding just eight, and striker Jane Ross finished as joint-top scorer across the European qualifying groups with 13 goals, including three hat-tricks.

This is a first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup playoff appearance for Scotland, following back-to-back

UEFA Women’s Euro play-offs.

Scotland’s Lizzie Arnot played in a major tournament with the Women’s Under-19s this summer, an experience she is hoping will be invaluable should she feature against the Netherlands on Saturday.

Arnot was an integral member of Gareth Evans’ side who reached the group stages of the European Championships in Norway in July, and it was a tournament that the 18-year old took plenty of positives from.

The Hibernian winger played alongside Caroline Weir in that tournament, and the Arsenal striker has since gone on to establish a place in the A-squad, scoring her first goal in the 9-0 rout of the Faroe Islands last month.

Leading the line for the Netherlands on Saturday will be Vivianne Miedema, who won the Golden Boot at the Women’s Under-19 Championships in the summer. Two of those goals came against Scotland in a 3-2 victory for the Dutch in Jessheim, in a match in which both Arnot and Weir featured.

Warriors called up for Scotland duty GLASGOW Warriors will have 17 players involved with the Scotland national team in the up and coming viagogo Autumn Tests next month following the announcement of the 33man squad today.

Among those players included in Vern Cotter’s squad is Mark Bennett who scored two tries on Saturday against Bath.

Also involved will be 18-year-old Zander Fagerson who has been invited to train with the team ahead of the matches against Argentina, New Zealand and Tonga.

Looking ahead to the tests in November, Cotter said: “Argentina will offer us a very stern test, especially scrum time.

They have good variety and move the ball well from nine, through the middle of the paddock and out the back.

“The All Blacks have just won the Rugby

Championship and are the best team in the world, so we’ll have to be on our toes.

“They also have more variety in their kicking game so covering space in the back field will be important.

“Defensively, we’re going to get tested, which is good because we want to show that our defence has improved.

“Tonga will be the final big test psychologically, having come through two big games, to play away from BT Murrayfield, and needing to put in a good performance at Rugby Park in Kilmarnock.

“It’s essential that we show maturity, mental strength and adaptability throughout the series.

“We have a good group, but the most important thing is that we play for each other, we play for the shirt, and we enjoy what we do.”
