The case of two midwives, from Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital, fighting for the legal right to avoid any involvement in abortion procedures reaches the UK’s highest court.

THE UK’S highest court is being urged to overturn a ruling in favour of two Catholic midwives who object to any involvement in abortion procedures.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde appealed to the Supreme Court after Mary Doogan and Connie Wood, who are conscientious objectors to abortion, were successful at the Court of Session in Edinburgh in April last year.

Ms Doogan, from Garrowhill in Glasgow, and Mrs Wood, from Clarkston in East Renfrewshire, were employed as labour ward co-ordinators at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.

The challenge before five justices centres on the scope of the right to conscientious objection under the Abortion Act 1967, which provides that “no person shall be under any duty ... to participate in any treatment authorised by this Act to which he has a conscientious objection”.

The issue to be decided by Lady Hale, Lord Wilson, Lord Reed, Lord Hughes and Lord Hodge is whether the women’s entitlement to conscientious objection includes the entitlement to refuse to supervise staff in the provision of care to patients undergoing terminations.

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) and British Pregnancy Advisory Service (bpas) have warned of the implications for services if the Court of Session decision is allowed to stand.

Ann Furedi, bpas chief executive, said: “bpas supports the right of healthcare professionals to conscientious objection, not least because women deserve better than being treated with contempt by those who think they are sinners. But ultimately a balance needs to be struck between that exercise of conscience and women’s access to legal services.

“There may be a small number of healthcare workers who have a conscientious objection to providing abortion care. There are far more who have a conscientious commitment to helping women who need to end a pregnancy.

As conscientious objectors, the women have had no direct role in pregnancy terminations.

But the senior midwifery sisters, who are in their 50s, claim they should also be entitled to refuse to delegate, supervise and support staff involved in the procedures or providing care to patients during the process.

The health board argues that conscientious objection is a right only to refuse to take part in activities that directly bring about the termination of a pregnancy.

In the original ruling against them, the judge, Lady Smith, found that the women were sufficiently removed from involvement in pregnancy terminations to afford them appropriate respect for their beliefs.

Police appeal after sexual assault in Motherwell At around 3am, the woman entered a white four door saloon vehicle on Airbles Street, Motherwell – believing it to be a private hire taxi. The driver then travelled to a carpark area at Anderson Street, Motherwell where the female was sexually assaulted.

Police are appealing for information following the sexual assault of an 18 year-old woman in Motherwell in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Concerns over hygiene Gaelic worth at Hairmyres Hospital up to £148.5m a year to economy

THE use of Gaelic by businesses and organisations has the potential to generate up to £148.5m a year for the economy, according to new research.

It suggests the use of the language in branding and advertising can make a business more attractive to customers.

The research has been published in a new report Ar Storas Gaidhlig - Our Gaelic Resource in English.

It suggests Gaelic and English bilingual branding, advertising and signage add value to what businesses and organisations offer.

The researchers said Gaelic could

enhance the distinctiveness of products and services and customers’ perceptions of their “authenticity and provenance”.

Researchers calculated that the potential economic value of Gaelic as an asset to the wider Scottish economy could be from £81.6m to £148.5m a year.

According to the 2011 census, there are 57,375 Gaelic speakers in Scotland and 87,000 people who claim to have some knowledge of the language.

Scotland’s two largest cities and surrounding areas have also experienced an influx of Gaelic speakers.

There are an estimated 10,000 in and around Glasgow and almost 6,000 in and around Edinburgh.

Mike Ashley ups loan Scottish unemployment rate falls to Rangers by £1m

SCOTLAND’S jobless total fell by 10,000 over the summer to stand at 164,000, according to official figures.

The Scottish unemployment rate now sits at 5.9%, which is just below the UK figure of 6%.

UK unemployment fell by 115,000 between July and September to just under two million.

LOAN INCREASE: Mike Ashley will increase his loan to the club by £1m

MIKE Ashley will provide another loan to Rangers as the club continues to struggle financially.

The Newcastle owner, who owns about 9% of the Ibrox club, will increase an initial loan of £2m to £3m.

But the club says it will need more cash before the end of the year due to lower than expected match attendances.

It has also been announced that Ashley has given up the naming rights to Ibrox, which he bought for £1 as part of a retail deal two years ago.

A statement to the Stock Exchange read: “The Board of Rangers announces that MASH Holdings Limited has agreed to increase the

£2m credit facility (the Facility) announced on 27 October with The Rangers Football Club Limited.

Charity protests

STAFF from The Glasgow Association of Mental Health and service users gathered outside the city chambers on Wednesday in a bid to stop the cuts and save the organisation from closure.

The Association, which helps more than 1000 people a week, could be forced to close after it emerged that nearly half its funding is in jeopardy.

TWO light shows took place in George Square to mark the experiences of Glaswegians during the First World War. Film, images and audio were projected onto Glasgow City Chambers during a 27-minute narrative.

Simultaneously, the names of every Glaswegian who fell during the conflict were beamed on to the Cenotaph.

Parenting scheme ‘a failure’

ACADEMICS have called for the withdrawal of funding for a free parenting programme in Glasgow after concluding it had minimal impact.

The “Triple P” system - Positive Parenting Programme - is backed by the city council and health board.

The Glasgow University study said more than half of families dropped out and there were no measurable benefits.

DEPUTY First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has said Prestwick Airport is in a “very good position” to become the first spaceport in the UK. However, Sturgeon said ministers could not make the Ayrshire site their preferred bidder at this early stage in the process.

Prestwick Airport bosses have already stated that they believe winning spaceport status could turn things around at the airport, which is currently running a loss.

The future First Minister said the government must remain neutral at this early stage of the contest, which has six different sites across Scotland all hoping to be named the

UK’s first ever spaceport.

Ms Sturgeon spoke out when she appeared before Holyrood’s Infrastructure and Capital Investment Committee to answer questions on the Scottish Government’s future plans for the ageing airport.

A vision document, published last month, recommended that Prestwick Airport should maintain its status as a gateway to Glasgow and work towards becoming the UK’s first spaceport.

DETECTIVES hunting the armed jewellers raid gang who stole watches worth £250,000 are following a positive line of inquiry.

The masked gang used weapons including a sledge hammer in the robbery at the Argyll Arcade on the 24th of September.

The robbers were seen running from the shopping area behind a cloud of smoke and carrying hammers. Police confirmed that four shops, Mappin and Webb, Rox, Lewis Grant and

Laings of Glasgow were targeted during the raid.

The gang only managed to enter Rox jewellers and grabbed a small quantity of items before running off. Rox confirmed that a number of watches worth around £250,000 were stolen in the raid.

Detectives are closing in on the gang and are now following a positive line of inquiry in relation to the raid.

Glasgow’s figures for young people going to higher education has risen for the 6th year in a row and at 31.4% is the highest proportion of Glasgow’s young people progressing into higher education from school ever.

THE man charged with murdering gangland figure, Kevin “Gerbil” Carroll, made his first public court appearance earlier this week.

William Paterson was alleged to have been involved in gunning down Carroll outside the Asda store in Robroyston, Glasgow, on January 13 2010.

The 35-year-old is also accused of fleeing the country for Spain 10 days after the shooting.

Paterson faced the allegations during a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday.

Paterson further faces a number of firearms charges as well as another accusation of attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

He is also said to have been involved in the reset of a car or an alternative accusation of being in the vehicle knowing it had been taken without consent.

Paterson’s lawyer Des Finnieston pled not guilty on his behalf and said he was not ready for a trial to be fixed.

FORMER Radio Clyde DJ Suzie McGuire was called a “terrorist” and accused of violence against her husband in court earlier this week

Her estranged husband Derek Mitchell claimed that, after attending a wedding at Cameron House on Loch Lomond, Miss McGuire attacked him, breaking his rib, as he lay sleeping.

He also said that she became angry after a local fair when he failed to

watch her two daughters dancing and punched him on the head.

Thousands sign up for Rucksack project OVER 7000 people on Facebook say they are attending a drive for The Rucksack Project Glasgow on December 7 to make sure people sleeping rough don’t freeze this winter.

Event organisers Lorna and Rachael McLean from Stepps have asked for sleeping bags, warm clothing, underwear and shoes to help homeless people keep warm when temperatures plummet.

Lorna and Rachael are also asking for unopened toiletries such as

deodorants, shower gels, shampoo, razors, shaving foam, soaps, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

The donations will be distributed among The Simon Community, Marie Trust Lodging Mission, City House Mission, Destiny Angels and more.

People can also donate tinned or dried food, which should be kept separate from the rucksacks and will be distributed to food banks throughout the city and beyond if there is enough to go round.

Cash donations won’t be accepted on the day because it is not a registered

charity, but anyone wishing to donate can send money to the Glasgow Simon Community using the details listed on the event’s Facebook page.

Should you be unable to attend the event, there is an opportunity to drop off donations ahead of time to Caesars, The Hall or Tir Na Nog.

THE Ministry of Defence has admitted it is considering changing its plan to build the new type 26 frigates on the Clyde and instead seek an alternative from abroad.

With the MoD and defence contractor BAE in the midst of a dispute over terms of the contract for the frigates, there has been speculation the UK could purchase French warships instead.

Scotland would lose out on a £4 billion contract, while the ship building industry could collapse potentially costing more than 11,000 jobs.

If the Royal Navy goes abroad for warships, it would break a key pledge made to Scottish voters by the UK government during the referendum that the new frigates would be built on the Clyde.

BOOST FOR ECONOMY: The Commonwealth Games led to an additional £282m worth of tourism

THE Glasgow Commonwealth Games led to an additional £282m worth of tourism, according to official research.

Leader of Glasgow City Council Gordon Matheson said the event had been “the best games ever”.

The new research found that 690,000 people travelled to the city to attend the games, with hotel occupancy in Glasgow reaching 95%.

The Games Visitor Impact Study was carried out on behalf of Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life and Glasgow City Marketing Bureau.

Other parts of Scotland were also said to have benefited, with visitors spending an average of five days in the country.

Councillor Matheson added: “The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games was of course the greatest ever, and one of the key legacies it

leaves behind is an even higher profile for Glasgow internationally.

“In the city during August, the average hotel occupancy rate was over 95 per cent, with this exceeding 99 per cent on five nights that month.

“These fantastic figures reflect Glasgow’s ever-growing reputation as a visitor destination and the pulling power of the city’s events programme.”

ATTACKED: The man was stabbed near old St Mirren Supporters’ Club on Knox Street in Paisley

A man has been repeatedly stabbed by two attackers in an unprovoked street assault.

The 44-year-old victim was walking down the street in Paisley, Renfrewshire, at around 4pm on Tuesday. He was approached by two males near the old St Mirren Supporters’ Club on Knox Street in the town.

Police say they then stabbed the man a number of times “for no apparent reason” before making off.

The victim made his way to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley where he received treatment for injuries to his body and hand.

He was released from hospital the following day. At this time, there is no

description available of the suspects.

Detective sergeant Ross MacDonald, at Paisley CID, said: “At this time we are trying to establish exactly what occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

“The victim will be re-interviewed in order to try and clarify a possible motive and descriptions of those involved.

“This incident occurred near Ferguslie Park Gardens and I would appeal to anyone who was in the general area and saw the attack or anything of a suspicious nature to come forward.”

Lottery scam warning A WOMAN has warned people not to fall for a lottery scam after she was sent a letter saying she had won a lump sum of £725,000.

In the letter, Elizabeth Neilson of Kirkintilloch was told her numbers had come up on the “Euromillions Fifa World Cup Super Lottery programme.

The document, which featured FIFA World Cup logos, asked Elizabeth for her bank details and a variety of personal information.

It told her to not make public her “win” to “avoid unwarranted abuse of the programme or fraudulent acts from criminal-minded and unauthorised persons”.

Elizabeth said, in a recent interview with the Kirkintilloch Herald “I knew it was

a scam immediately because I don’t do the lottery!”

“I want to put out a warning as I don’t want other people to be taken in by it. It has all the official logos on it.”

The letter stated: “This is a tax-free draw and all participants were selected through a computer ballot system drawn from over 3,000,000 individuals worldwide.”

It said that to claim the money, Elizabeth had to contact the foreign service manager of a financial corporation before November 28 or the cash would be returned to the UK internal revenue.

People are being warned to watch out for similar scams and to report suspicious letters to Trading Standards on 0300 1234510 or e-mail trading.standards@ eastdunbarton.gov.uk.

Annual Christmas toy appeal The Regent Centre in Kirkintilloch is launching its annual Christmas toy appeal.

From Monday, the shopping centre will start collecting toys donated by the public and will continue to do so right up until December 22.

The drive, which collected more than four trolleys full last year, asks the public to donate new toys which will be collected by East Dunbartonshire Council’s Social Work Department and distributed

to less fortunate children in Kirkintilloch and the surrounding villages, all in time for Christmas.

All items donated will be allocated to either a boy or girl depending on the gift, and close attention will be paid to the recommended suitable age.

RESIDENTS of Leslie Road were shocked on Sunday to discover a car ‘fireball’ on the street.

On Friday 7th November, officers acting under warrant entered an industrial unit in Waverley Street, and recovered film DVDs with an estimated value in excess of £150,000.

Fire crews were called to the scene at around 11.30pm on Sunday 9th November, where the car was engulfed in flames.

Titles seized include box sets of Game of Thrones and Homeland, as well as computer equipment and mobile phones.

Man electrocuted on railway track in South Side

A MAN has been electrocuted after coming into contact with overhead lines on a railway track.

Disruption was caused to rail services in the south side of Glasgow following an incident at 6.20am on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old man was injured between Pollokshields East and Queens Park and services between the two stations and Glasgow central were disrupted for several hours.

He was found with serious burns and lying in a railway cutting below Nursery Street, in the Pollokshaws area of the city.

Emergency services and an ambulance crew attended and the man was taken to hospital for treatment.

Officers said enquiries are ongoing to establish how he came to be on the railway and sustained his injuries.

A man called at the home of the woman in Alderman Road, Knightswood, Glasgow, at around midday on Monday.

He advised her of government grants for roof repairs and convinced her that she needed her roof checked.

After “inspecting” the roof with two other men who had joined him, the woman was told that her roof needed urgent repairs.

She was quoted a price for the work but as she did not have money in the house, they offered to drive her to a bank.

Trusting that the men were reputable workmen, the woman got into the car and was driven to three banks to withdraw money from her account.

The first was a TSB on Great Western Road in Anniesland, Glasgow, where she withdrew a three-figure sum of cash.

The second was the TSB in Clydebank Shopping Centre where she withdrew a fourfigure sum of money.

Finally, she was taken to a third TSB in Byres Road where a further four-figure sum was taken out. At this bank the three suspects met with a fourth man driving a small white van.

The second male suspect is described as in his 60’s, white, around 5ft 10in tall, of medium build and was wearing a dark baseball hat and dark woolly gloves.

The third man is described as aged between 30 and 40, white, 5ft 8in tall, of slim build, with dark shaved hair and was wearing dark blue jeans.

The final suspect is described as being in his late 50’s, white, Glaswegian accent, wearing a hat and dirty blue jeans.

The car is described as dirty silver older style car with the letter G in the number plate.

Firpark Street will be known to local people as the area where flats have been built at the rear of the Necropolis and the Royal Infirmary. The taxi may have continued on to another destination.

Detective Inspector Liz McLean said:

“This young woman thought these men were going to help her when in reality they were intent on causing her harm. She is extremely distressed by what has happened and it’s vital we trace both men.

“In particular, we would like to speak to the taxi driver who collected the group as it’s possible he can provide us with further detail which will enable us to trace both these men.”

£3M expansion for Glasgow Airport

GLASGOW Airport has announced plans to invest more than £3m on extending one of its three piers.

The woman was dropped near her home in Pikeman Road, Knightswood, by the men who drove off and have not returned to do the work.

The first suspect is described as male, in his 40’s, white, around 6ft in height and of stocky or heavy build. He was wearing grey fleece top.

The two men and one woman were picked up outside the Sanctuary Nightclub in Dumbarton Road around 2.30am and they were dropped off in Firpark Street area in Dennistoun.

It brings the total amount Glasgow Airport has invested in enhancing its facilities during 2014 to £20m, following a £17m enhancement of facilities for the Commonwealth Games.

The latest programme of works will involve the construction of a two-storey, 1400sqm extension of the pier, which is due for completion by spring 2015.

In the past few months, Ryanair opened a new base at the airport, which is expected to bring in more than 850,000 passengers a year with 55 weekly return flights.

Jet2 has also announced expansion plans, including five new routes and an additional aircraft.

Babysitter found guilty of murdering two-year-old girl A MAN has been found guilty of murdering a two-year-old while he babysat her in her own home.

Kevin Park denied killing Madison Horn at the house in Kelty, Fife on April 20.

But a jury at the High Court in Glasgow found him guilty on Wednesday this week.

Judge Michael O’Grady QC sentenced him to life in prison with a minimum of 22 years.

The 27-year-old was left to look after the toddler while her mother, Ann Marie White, went to a friend’s birthday party.

He repeatedly struck her head against a wall, with the court hearing there were

two indentations in the hallway with blonde hair caught in the cracked plaster.

Madison, who died from blunt force trauma to her head and abdomen, had 65 separate injuries including a fractured skill, tears to her liver and bruises on her head and body.

STREETS in a West Lothian town were closed earlier this week after after a man phoned emergency services believing he had anthrax.

“Significant resources have been involved in the search for Shaun with extensive searches in open areas, woodland and waterways in a bid to trace him and during the course of the enquiry, items of his clothing have been recovered.

Gideon Court, Hopetoun Street and Rainbow Nursery were all closed for about five hours. The roads were reopened later on Wednesday.

POLICE have released CCTV footage of a man missing in Aberdeen.

Shaun Ritchie was last seen with friends at a remote woodland area near Strichen on the night of Friday 31 October, and into the early hours of Saturday morning.

The CCTV image was captured in Fraserburgh on the afternoon of the day Mr Ritchie was last seen.

It shows him wearing dark grey skinny jeans, a white t-shirt, a grey hoodie and brown trainers.

Insp Alan Brown said: “The image clearly shows what Shaun was wearing on the day he went missing.

Police killer Harry Club Patrons quit Roberts released over rapist Evans KILLER Harry Roberts has been released from prison after spending 48 years behind bars.

The 78-year-old, who was jailed for life for his involvement in the shooting dead of three unarmed officers in 1966, was released from Littlehey prison in Cambridgeshire on Monday night.

Detective Sergeant Christopher Head, 30, Detective Constable David Wombwell, 25, and PC Geoffrey Fox, 41, were shot dead without warning while questioning three suspects in a van on 12 August that year.

Roberts pulled the trigger to kill two of the officers. An accomplice shot the third policeman but Roberts was sentenced to three life sentences.

He pleaded guilty to murdering Det Sgt Head and Det Con Wombwell but was found guilty by a jury of the murder of PC Fox.

Police probe dentist patient death POLICE are investigating the death of a woman who died shortly after being treated by a dentist, currently under review for poor infection control practices.

Desmond D’Mello, formerly of the Daybrook practice, has been suspended by the General Dental Council.

NHS England said the Nottinghamshire dentist did not wash his hands or sterilise equipment between patients.

Up to 22,000 former patients may have to be tested for blood-borne viruses.

Experts said the risk of infection was believed to be low but thousands of people who used the practice in the Nottingham suburb are to be recalled

and offered tests.

The 23-year-old woman died in August 2013, the same month she received treatment.

A second woman, aged 29, died the same month after a procedure at the surgery but police said there was no link between her treatment and her death.

According to the General Dental Council one of these two women died as a result of a viral infection but police refused to confirm who.

Russian troops Ebola Doctor released from enter Ukraine New York hospital THE first and only person to be diagnosed with Ebola in New York has been released from hospital following his recovery.

REPORTS from Nato say it has seen Russian military equipment and Russian combat troops entering Ukraine this week.

“Russian tanks, Russian artillery, Russian air defence systems and Russian combat troops” were sighted, US Gen Philip Breedlove said in Bulgaria.

Russia has consistently denied sending troops into eastern Ukraine to bolster pro-Russian separatist rebels there.

However, the rebels have admitted being helped by “volunteers” from Russia.

Heavy artillery fire rocked the east Ukrainian city of Donetsk, the industrial hub held by pro-Russian separatist rebels, on Wednesday morning.

It was unclear whether the fire came from besieging government forces or the rebels themselves or both.

There were also reports of fighting near the rebel-held city of Luhansk.

One Ukrainian soldier was killed and another injured north of Luhansk, when rebels fired on government positions near the village of Schastya, Ukrainian security forces said.

More than 4,000 people have died since government forces moved in April to put down an armed insurrection by the rebels in the two regions, which border Russia.

A fragile ceasefire was agreed in Minsk on 5 September, although hundreds of people have been killed since then.

Banks fined £2bn over forex failings FIVE banks, including Royal Bank of Scotland, have been fined more than £2bn by authorities after failing to stop their employees rigging the currency markets at the expense of customers.

Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), HSBC, UBS, JPMorgan and Citigroup were all fined hundreds of millions of pounds on Wednesday following lengthy investigations into the $5.3 trillion (£3.3 trillion)-a-day foreign exchange markets.

The scandal has seen scores of traders dismissed or suspended for colluding to manipulate foreign exchange rates in order to manufacture profits, and has even embroiled the Bank of England.

Arctic blast hits Canada and US

By Mark Baker PARTS of Canada and the US have been getting their first blast of winter, sending temperatures plummeting by as much as 22C (40F) in days.

The sharply cooler temperatures are a result of frigid air pushed in by a powerful storm that hit Alaska with hurricane-force winds.

There have been more than two feet of snow in parts of Michigan, and more

than 150 flights were cancelled at the Minneapolis airport.

Hamilton’s Amy Meisak hoping to win big for UK in Fiji The 21-year-old Scottish beauty on pageants, following your dreams and putting Scotland on the map HAMILTON born beauty, Amy Meisak (21), is getting ready to jet off to Fiji to represent UK in the world finals of Miss World Supermodel later this month, after winning Miss World Supermodel United Kingdom.

Having always dreamed of being an actress when she was little, Amy attended stage school from a young age. She pulled out when she had to concentrate on her studies at school, and somewhere along the line, the dream of acting grew more and more into the dream of being on television.

“I’m quite a bubbly person and people would tell me I have a great personality for TV or Radio. The more I thought about it, the more I realised that I wanted to be involved in the media industry as a presenter!” she says.

Miesak decided to turn to pageants as a way of teaching herself how to market herself, think creatively while under pressure, as well as deal with her nerves and build her confidence in front of a crowd. She explains “I had never ever thought I would be involved in pageants.

“It always seemed to me as if it wasn’t a common thing and you needed some sort of experience to even enter. “ Amy decided to enter her first pageant in August 2014 - Miss Earth, which is one of the top three most prestigious beauty pageants in the world. She had little hope of getting far in the competition however believed it would be a great learning experience in order to further develop her career.

“When I entered, I really had no clue that I would become a grand finalist and get the chance to represent my country in the worldwide beauty pageant.

“It was scary for me as I had never done anything like this before. I didn’t really know how it all worked and what would be expected of me but I thought, ‘Hey, its good experience’. “ Some of the other contestants had been taking part in pageants for years and had won some pretty big titles already. Amy explained, “There is a big stigma attached to beauty pageants. You almost half expect the other contestants to love themselves and look down on you and it was not that way at all.

“All the girls were so nice, sharing tips and helping each other with things like hair and makeup. Also it

was not the stereotypical girls that everyone had imagined. The girls were very intelligent, graceful and beautiful in their own way.”

In this pageant Amy managed to scoop third place “Miss Earth Water” and the “Darling of the Press Award” which Amy says “Being a media nerd, [that] was the best award.

“It was a great coming third, although every girl wanted to win, I was just genuinely thrilled to have ever gotten that far.”

After winning Miss Earth Water, Meisak received a letter inviting her to compete in the Miss World

14th November - 20th November 2014 • Glasgow City News 17 Supermodel UK final. A week later Amy and her two good friends travelled down to Cheshire where the pageant was being held. Amy attended two full days of training and rehearsals. Although she says she felt out of her depth, she had her friends for support and she thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“My friends were so supportive and gave me pep talks throughout the pageant, texting me from backstage saying I was doing brilliantly and just to remember that it’s all good experience for my career so just have fun!”

When the results came in, the first award to be called was the ‘Miss Congeniality Award’ –voted for anonymously by other contestants for the friendliest contestant. This would be Amy’s first award of the event. She says “I couldn’t believe when they called my name! I was so touched that all the girls had voted me as the friendliest.”

Amy’s name was then called for Best in Evening Wear and again for Best Interview.

“Winning those awards was enough for me” she says, but to her surprise, the winner for Miss World Supermodel United Kingdom was called and it was Amy. “It was me! I honestly was speechless and that’s rare for me to be lost for words!”

After winning the prestigious title of Miss World Supermodel UK, Amy discovered this qualified her to go to Fiji to represent the UK in the world finals.

The trip to Fiji will include visiting locals schools and villages, as well as attending press events and taking part in photoshoots and activities.

Amy says preparing for Fiji has been

quite difficult, as there are a lot of things to prepare before she goes, and she has had to raise the funds to be able to go. She recently held a fundraiser and was touched by how many of her friends and family showed up to support her on her travels. Amy said“…the help of friends and family has made this possible. I had a little fundraiser in my house and was so touched by the amount of people came to the event and donated to my Fiji fund to help me on my way.”

Amy feels it is so important to go over and put Scotland and the UK on the map. “We get forgotten about sometimes, and [we] forget how great a country we are!

“I will do my best to do the United Kingdom proud and try my best to bring back some recognition.”

Amy’s advice for anyone thinking of taking on a new challenge or improving their future is to go for it.

“I would say to anyone who is about to take a massive step… just to go for it.

“I think we all hold back too much in life because we are scared to be out of our comfort zones. But in the end... so what?”

“It’s about the experience you get and trying new things. Even if you think you’ll fail you should just go for it because you never know what it may bring you.”

Having achieved so much already, Amy is determined to continue building her confidence through pageants and getting as much experience as possible for the media and broadcasting industries. She says: “A dream of mine is to be a TV presenter and I will not stop until that goal is reached.”

ON a wet, dark and dreary November afternoon, myself and a friend found ourselves in the unenviable position of roaming Glasgow’s city centre, debating where to grab a bite to eat. Thankfully we were saved from pneumonia, starvation and certain squabbling, when we stumbled across Café Andaluz in Vincent Place.

QUARRIERS is hoping to celebrate its 21st Noel Lunch in style this year, with the charity lunch on track to surpass the £1 million fundraising mark.

All funds raised at the 2014 Quarriers Noel Lunch will go towards the charity’s Box of Hope campaign, which aims to spread a little festive joy this Christmas by providing young homeless people with basic winter essentials. Last year, the Lunch raised a record-breaking £86,000 in aid of Quarriers’ Coaching For Life initiative which provides hundreds of vulnerable young people with support, counselling and encouragement to help them succeed in life.

Speaking ahead of the event, Fred said: “It is my pleasure to be hosting the Noel Lunch once again. It’s been a few years since I last did it and the great thing is it’s getting towards Christmas and guests are always full of the Christmas spirit which is reflected in the generosity of the donations made at the event.”

An ever-present on Glasgow’s Christmas social scene, Quarriers’ Noel Lunch is the Renfrewshire-based charity’s flagship annual event, raising awareness of its services and generating funds to help deliver its range of inspiring projects.

Hosted by one of Scotland’s favourite funny men, Fred MacAulay, this year’s event takes place on Friday 5th December at the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow and organisers are hoping this will be the year they break the million pound barrier.

An oasis of Spanish light and warmth in the gloom, Café Andaluz turned out to be a fantastic choice, and one which we could agree wholeheartedly upon. Despite it being late afternoon, and a Saturday, we were greeted by friendly and accommodating staff who told us they could just manage to squeeze us in, although they were fully booked later in the evening (we were lucky, but booking ahead at the weekend is definitely a good idea). The décor is traditional, cosy Spanish, and we were impressed by the beautiful lighting and comfortable ambience Café Andaluz have created.

My friend asked for the waitress’s recommendation for a fruity red wine and she was happy to oblige, offering him a taste before he decided on it. Then we got down to the serious business of ordering from the restaurant’s extensive and varied

tapas selection.

As a vegetarian, it can often be difficult to find a decent range of options, but not so with Café Andaluz. At least a third of their menu is veggie friendly, and I was spoilt for choice, eventually deciding on Tortilla Espanola, a Spanish potato and onion omelette, grilled goat’s cheese with Seville orange and chilli marmalade, and Tostada de Champinones, mushrooms, garlic, truffle oil and smoked Tetilia cheese on croutons.

All three dishes were delicious; light, flavourful and perfectly presented.

My friend who opted for the Albondigas, delicious and tender lamb meatballs in a rich tomato sauce, Pollo Romesco, chicken thighs served with a tomato, chilli, red pepper and almond salsa, and a platter of sliced Serrano ham, was equally impressed.

In fact, our only complaint would be that the tables were perhaps a little small for tapas, and we had to perform a bit of a balancing act to fit everything on.

We finished our meals with glorious

homemade desserts, sweet and sticky caramel cheese cake, and a deliciously dark and bitter chocolate and orange mousse, which were the perfect end to a superb meal.

Although Café Andaluz’s Al la Carte menu is on the pricey side, it’s worth investigating their range of set menus and pre-theatre offers. You certainly won’t be disappointed with the quality and service.

Review: Atholl Palace Hotel and Spa massages, included in our one night spa break package. Reluctant to move from the spa’s chill out room, we eventually worked up enough motivation to make full use of the pool, sauna, jacuzzi and steam room, which pays heed to the Atholl Palace’s origins as a hydropathic hotel.

and woodland walks, we passed the time until dinner taking in the hotel’s expansive lobby and lounge.

Here guests can laze by an open fire whilst enjoying a drink from the bar, surrounded by period artwork and interest pieces, including two charming baby grand pianos.

We were warmly greeted at reception with a welcome ‘wee dram’ for the non-drivers, and directed to our rooms, where, to our surprise, a complimentary upgrade saw one of us spending the night in a rather impressive castle turret.

After a restful half hour in the newly converted Stags Head Bar, its décor strongly influenced by the hotel’s highland roots, we headed to the Lavender Spa. Here we were treated to incredibly relaxing full body

views of the hotel’s immaculately maintained grounds and the magnificent Tummel Valley beyond. The Atholl Palace’s menu focuses on local produce with beef, fish and game, as well as vegetarian options, providing plentiful choice. Our meals were cooked to perfection, with all three courses living up to the Palace’s ever growing reputation for quality cuisine.

After a sound night’s sleep in pleasant and well equipped rooms, we enjoyed an enormous array of cooked and continental breakfast options. Reluctant to leave, we visited the hotel’s basement museum, which details the building’s fascinating past, adding to the overall sense of staying in a hotel steeped in Scottish history. It is this air of tradition and history, combined with excellent service and facilities, which makes a stay at the Atholl Palace Hotel a truly unique experience.

The Unofficial Parent’s Guide to.. Teenage Relationships

MOST parents worry about the day their child will start dating.

It is the big sign that they’re growing up and are entering adulthood. But it’s important to remember that they do still need you now and this is a normal development phase of the teen years. There are also things you can do to make dating easier for both of you.

Talk to your teen about what a good relationship is. While you may think your teen already knows how to date, they probably don’t. Most of their information comes from media that’s meant to be entertaining, not realistic. Make sure your child understands what it means to be in a loving and supporting relationship.

Once you’re done talking, set a good example in your relationship with your significant other.

Once your child starts dating, don’t stop talking to them about

relationships. Dating doesn’t always go as you expect; your child may need someone to come to if they have a problem. You need to keep the lines of communication open and also reiterate to them how they should treat people and expect to be treated in a relationship.

When it comes time to meet your teen’s date, be kind and respectful.

While you may want to give a lecture on the rules; their date is not the one you should be talking to. It is your teen’s responsibility to know your rules and follow them. Also, while you may not like the person your child is dating, be supportive.

If you have taught them about a proper relationship, then you should trust them to make their own decisions. Only intervene if you think the relationship is dangerous for your child.

It may be hard to see your child growing up and finding new people to get close to, but if you take the

right steps and teach them how relationships are supposed to be, they’re much more likely to make the right choices.

Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance 2014 Saturday 8th, 9.10pm, BBC1

HUW Edwards presented moving coverage of the annual event from the Royal Albert Hall in the presence of the Queen and other members of the royal family. Joss Stone, the cast of War Horse and D-Day veteran Jim Radford performed alongside the Massed Bands of the Household Division, and the bands of HM Royal Marines and the Queen’s Colour Squadron.

Together, they paid tribute to the victims of conflict, from the First World War to the present day, in a festival that also included the traditional two-minute silence as thousands of poppy petals fall from the venue’s ceiling.

Powering through fan favourites Gun, Lies and Recover in flawless style, the trio then mixed things up, with Martin Doherty taking the mike for Under the Tide, sending the already feverish atmosphere to another level entirely.

Saving hit record The Mother We Share until last left fans crying out for an encore and Chvrches delivered, showcasing their second new track of the evening, Dead Air, written for the new Hunger Games movie soundtrack, and perfectly exemplifying just how far this band have come from their humble beginnings.

Real Love - Tom Odell (Single) AFTER the success of previous hits such as “Another Love” and “I Know” Tom Odell has returned with a cover of The Beatles track “Real Love”. This is a truly beautiful love song, which is sure to be a massive hit, especially over the festive period. The song is featured in the John Lewis Christmas advert with Monty the penguin, so we will probably be hearing a lot more of it over the coming weeks.

The arrangement of this cover is totally different from the original, the track starts with a stunning piece on the piano and then

the unmistakable Odell vocals join in. There are also some lovely string sections creating a really beautiful orchestral build up towards the end of the song.

Some people don’t agree with covers as it is not creating something fresh and new however, one thing that can be said for covers is it allows different generations to celebrate great songs. This song was a great song when The Beatles released it and this version of the song is stunning and so fitting for this time of year.

Grand makeover THE Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow has undergone a £4.6m makeover just four years after re-opening its doors from a previous refurbishment.

HOUSE builders and property investors have warned John Swinney’s replacement for Stamp Duty places too much burden on middle-class families and calls for its 10 per cent rate to be cut.

The multi-million-pound investment, which follows a £20m makeover in 2010, has included opening a previously unused fifth floor and the unveiling of 46 new bedrooms and suites, increasing the hotel’s offering to 230 bedrooms.

Interior design team Goddard Littlefair was appointed to create a ‘home-from-home’ environment, including marble bathrooms, rainfall showers, wall mirrors and ceramic roll-top baths.

The expansion has also created 25 new part-time and full-time positions at the hotel.

Grand Central Hotel was named Scottish Hotel of the Year in the Scottish Hotel Awards 2013.

They warned the levy, which will replace Stamp Duty next April, risks creating a “logjam” in the housing market by deterring families from

moving to a larger home and predicted Edinburgh, Aberdeen and East Renfrewshire will be particularly “badly affected”.

In separate submissions to Holyrood’s finance committee, trade groups representing the sectors criticised as “too steep” the increase in the LBTT rate from two per cent to 10 per cent when the purchase price reaches £250,001.

Glasgow Housing ‘Shameful’ overcrowding issue in association benefits social rented homes from affordable housing guarantee

ALMOST a quarter of families with children who stay in council or housing association homes live in overcrowded circumstances, according to new figures.

TWENTY five housing associations, including two in Scotland, have benefitted from more than £1 billion which has been unlocked from the market to build new affordable homes.

UK housing minister Brandon Lewis said the UK Government’s affordable housing guarantee will lead to nearly 9,300 homes being provided across the country.

The system of guarantees allows housing associations to borrow money for new affordable housing at very competitive rates, underpinned by the government as a debt guarantor. The total fund is worth £3.5bn UK-wide.

New Gorbals Housing Association has borrowed £6.7 million to build 118 homes in Glasgow while Home Scotland will build 147 homes across the country with its only guaranteed sum of £12.0m.

Speaking to the Northern Housing Consortium in Leeds yesterday, Mr Lewis said: “Since 2010 this government has put in place a longterm economic plan that is cutting the national deficit, supporting people back into work and keeping interest rates down to help people with their mortgages.

“Our affordable housing guarantee scheme is a prime example of the benefits that brings: the government’s strong economic record unlocking more than £1 billion for sensible borrowing at rates well below the market average.

“This funding is helping to build 9,000 homes across the UK, on top of the 200,000 affordable homes already built since 2010.2

Analysis of 2011 census data revealed that families in 23 per cent (33,000) of social rented accommodation do not have enough space.

The figure falls to 17 per cent (13,000) for families with children living in private rented accommodation.

Across all of Scotland’s 2.4 million homes, overcrowding was an issue in 9 per cent of homes, or 214,000 properties.

Lack of space was found in 5 per cent of owner-occupied property, 16 per cent of social rented accommodation and 17 per cent of private rented homes.

Overcrowding soared in student properties, homes with more than two generations of a family living together and households of unrelated adults.

In private rented accommodation, just over a third (35 per cent) of these properties were overcrowded, increasing to 43 per cent in social-rented homes.

The census also reveals that 5 per cent of overcrowded households had no central heating in 2011.

across Scotland there are more than 150,000 people on council waiting lists for a home. A lack of investment in social housing over the last three decades and the impact of right to buy, with more than half a million social homes sold off, all add up to a major shortage of affordable housing.

“These are just some of the compelling reasons we need to see at least 10,000 homes for social rent being built each year to tackle Scotland’s housing crisis.

“Unfortunately, however, in the most recent Budget Statement, the Scottish Government committed to delivering just 4,000 homes for social rent next year, less than half of what we need. This was a real missed opportunity and, at that rate, we will never meaningfully address the shortage of affordable homes in Scotland and give hope to those families in overcrowded homes.”

Don’t drink at night: Warning Jaguar to produce four-wheelissued to Scots drivers drive version of F-type

SCOTTISH drivers will be warned not to drink at all, the night before getting behind the wheel of a car.

The warning comes ahead of Scotland’s new drink-driving laws, which are to be brought in on the 5th of December.

Scotland’s blood alcohol limit will be reduced from 80mg in every 100 ml of blood, to 50 mg in every 100 ml of blood, bringing Scotland into line with most other European countries.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said:

“I have said before that I am determined we do everything we can to make our roads safer and save lives. Drink driving shatters families and communities and we must take action to reduce the risk on our roads.

“This new limit will bring Scotland into line with most of Europe and send a clear message to drivers who continue to ignore the warnings that there is never an excuse to drink and drive.

“Getting behind the wheel after drinking can have fatal consequences, the advice is simple; if you have had any alcoholic drink whatsoever, don’t drive. No one should be drinking and driving and the new lower limit only reinforces what should already be the case with drivers taking full responsibility and not putting lives at risk.

“Lowering the drink drive limit will help make Scotland’s roads safer, it is the right thing to do, and most importantly, it will save lives meaning that fewer families have to go through the heartache of a loved one lost”.

Around 10,000 police officers have been tasked with carrying out spot-checks to enforce the new limit. Uniformed police officers will be ordered to stop more vehicles for road checks and breath-test drivers they suspect of having had a drink.

Drivers will be warned that breaking it could mean a driving ban, criminal record for 20 years and even jail.

ALL-WHEEL F-TYPE R: The new all-wheel-drive Jaguar F-TYPE R Coupé ensured the Bloodhound SSC World Land Speed Record programme passed a significant high-speed testing milestone

JAGUAR announced last week that it is to expand the F-type range to feature a total of 14 different variants, one of which will be an F-type R Coupé equipped with four-wheel drive.

The new car will offer a 0-60mph time of 3.9 seconds, and a top speed electronically limited to 186mph.

Jaguar revealed the AWD F-Type as part of a partnership with the Bloodhound SSC world record team (which hopes to break the 1000mph barrier in 2015) with the new F-Type R AWD taking part in a communications test with the Bloodhound team in South Africa.

Ian Hoban, Vehicle Line Director, Jaguar said: “Our target with engineering the all-wheel drive F-TYPE was to maintain the engaging rear-drive character that’s so important to Jaguar sports cars, yet offer even greater dynamic capability.

AHEAD of the winter weather setting in, Traffic Scotland has released information via their website on how to stay safe and be prepared on the roads.

GLASGOW City scored two late goals to reach the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time.

When Joanne Love hammered in a shot on 81 minutes, City led Zurich 3-2 on the night but were going out on away goals, having lost the first leg 2-1.

But Suzanne Lappin powered in a header to seal a dramatic comeback victory.

Cinzia Zehnder slotted the Swiss side ahead, with Abbi Grant and Leanne Ross replying before Fabienne Humm appeared to tip the match in Zurich’s favour.

The players on the City bench raced on to the pitch to celebrate Lappin’s goal, including goalkeeper Lee Alexander, who was withdrawn at half-time with a suspected broken collarbone but refused to go to hospital.

Just a short time earlier, the faces on the sidelines were glum as Humm levelled less than two minutes after Ross had slammed in a penalty.

But City were rewarded for their fantastic spirit and for dominating long spells of the match at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium.

Using the width of the pitch well, the home team had the Swiss penned back for most of the first half but could not find a killer pass in the final third.

Zurich were a threat on the break, with Alexander’s injury coming after a brave one-on-one save before Zehnder finished coolly when City failed to clear from a corner in first-half stoppage-time.

There were 10 Warriors in the starting lineup and four on the bench, with Mark Bennett making his Scotland debut and Adam Ashe and Finn Russell playing for their country at BT Murrayfield for the first time.

Keane was allegedly involved in an altercation with a fan in the hotel’s reception area.

The Republic of Ireland team are staying at the hotel ahead of Friday’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Scotland at Celtic Park.

“We wish to clarify that Roy Keane called the Gardai following the incident,” read an FAI statement.

It added: “The manager, Martin O’Neill, and the FAI are fully aware of the circumstances surrounding this event, and the assistant manager

Motherwell community group continues negotiations for club A MOTHERWELL community group says it is continuing negotiations despite being told it will now take more than £800,000 to keep alive its dream of fan ownership at Fir Park.

The Well Society is hoping to buy the club from owner John Boyle.

Boyle has handed his 70% shareholding to the club to be held in a trust fund in the hope that

the Well Society, a community-based group advocating fan ownership, can raise the funds to buy them.

The Well Society said at the beginning of November that it had raised £500,000 and was targeting a further £1m in loans.

But there have been reports of rival groups expressing an interest in the shares - and the club, who are also looking for a new team manager after the resignation of Stuart McCall.

Aberdeen close to debt free ABERDEEN have agreed an investment deal that will wipe out the club’s debts.

As the Dons released their annual accounts, it was revealed their net debt of £14.49m will be cleared if the restructuring plans are approved.

Kingman named Horse of the Year at Cartier Racing Awards KINGMAN has been named 2014 Horse of the Year at the Cartier Racing Awards.

The three-year-old miler, trained by John Gosden for owner Prince Khalid Abdullah, won four Group One races including the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Kingman claimed the honour ahead of fellow shortlisted contenders Australia, Treve and Noble Mission.

On a winning night for Abdullah, his Champion Stakes winner Noble Mission took the award for best older horse.

Nobel Mission, the younger brother of Frankel, was trained to three top-level triumphs by Lady

Cecil, while Australia won the English and Irish Derbies and Treve secured a second Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Kingman, whose only defeat of the season came against Richard Hannon’s Night Of Thunder in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, was retired to stud in September.

The horse also claimed the prize for top threeyear-old colt, with the filly award going to stablemate Taghrooda.

Taghrooda won the Oaks and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes for owner Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum, who received the order of merit.

INJURED: Everton midfielder James McCarthy has been ruled out of tonight’s match

Tonight’s Euro 2016 Qualifier sees Scotland without Hutton and Bardsley, whilst Ireland’s McCarthy and Whelan are both ruled out due to injury THE Republic of Ireland have been dealt a double injury blow ahead of tonight’s Euro 2016 qualifier with Scotland, as James McCarthy and Glenn Whelan have both been ruled out by injury.

Everton midfielder McCarthy is to return to his club for treatment on a hamstring injury after undergoing a scan on Wednesday evening. Whelan had been a surprise late addition to Martin O’Neill’s squad, but has not yet fully recovered from a fractured leg suffered against Germany.

The Stoke City midfielder trained on Wednesday after making a surprisingly quick return from the injury sustained in the 1-1 draw in Gelsenkirchen on 14 October, but returned to his club for

treatment on Thursday.

With Marc Wilson ruled out by injury, Derby’s Richard Keogh is among the candidates to be drafted into the centre of the Republic’s defence.

Scotland are without injured Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton, while Phil Bardsley is also unavailable.

Full-back Bardsley was injured early in Stoke’s 2-1 win at Tottenham on Sunday and has been replaced in the squad by uncapped Hearts defender Callum Paterson.

Those injuries make it likely that Steven Whittaker will start at rightback for the hosts, who are also missing long-term absentee Robert Snodgrass.

O’Neill would not confirm that

chief executive, John Delaney, about an allocation of around 3,000 tickets for the travelling support. Delaney openly lambasted his association’s Scottish counterparts despite the allocation being consistent with competition rules.

A Scottish FA spokesperson confirmed on Thursday that no tickets remain for the fixture. Around 11,000 tickets offering various levels of restricted view at the 60,000-capacity venue were the last to be sold, and were so by lunchtime on Wednesday.
