ARCHITECTURE + WATER + LANDSCAPE = THE BIG BOX STORE BECOMES A COMMUNITY RESOURCE INNOVATIVE LOWE’S STORE CONCEPT NORTH RAINIER VALLEY: SEATTLE, WASHINGTON The current trend for the designs of big box retail stores such as Lowe’s Home Improvement, need a fresh approach and need to incorporate more sustainable building and marketing strategies. This concept originated in the conceptual design phases of the North Rainier Valley entry for the 2011 ULI Hines Urban Design Competition. I took this concept further with the objective of Lowe’s Home Improvement and Lowe’s Foods stores combining to develop a retail store concept where its primary focus shifted to serve as a community resource. This new store conecpt would serve as a hands-on resource built to educate the community and public by providing a pilot project which combines architecture and landscape water systems that are both publicly visible and accessible. Imagine the many positive andbeneficial impacts that could be realized if many big-box retail stores such as Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Kohl’s etc. began to design and every store in similar fashion to this propossal.

Water Features
Harvest water carefully + use water responsibly This approach reduced the store’s need for fresh water, by making an abundance of stored and recycled water available to use for landscaping, fire-fighting, + cleaning purposes. This also maximizes the lifecycle and use of water, allowing water to be collected, stored, used, and distributed throughout the community more efficiently.
