bbiamo incontrato l’architetto Giuseppe Tortato che in un’intensa chiacchierata ci ha spiegato la sua idea di luce naturale in relazione all’architettura. E di come è nata Fibercloud, una luminosa scultura blu lunga duecento metri.

Ci vuole raccontare il suo approccio sartoriale all’architettura?

La “sartorialità” di cui si parla è un approccio istintivo e sensoriale alla progettazione che da sempre mi accompagna. Quando inizio un nuovo progetto che si tratti di aree urbane, oggetti di design o progetti di interni non so cosa produrrò o cosa mi inventerò. Non ci sono forme o idee a priori e affronto il nuovo

progetto con grande curiosità. In quel momento, le richieste del cliente e la scoperta dell’ambito in cui opererò attivano i ricettori e danno vita alla magia di una nuova creazione.

La fase creativa è spesso guidata dalla natura, generalmente è sempre diversa e deve stupire innanzitutto me stesso.

L’architettura, la luce e l’arte sono tra i motori della nuova Milano, quali altri obiettivi, oltre che “città che sale” dovrebbe impegnarsi a raggiungere soprattutto dopo la drammaticità di questi mesi?

A parte il concetto della città che sale, che in questo momento mi sembra in parte messa in discussione, io penso alla città della gente

restituita ai suoi cittadini. La città dei quartieri e della vita che vi deve rifiorire con il mix funzionale e virtuoso dei negozi di vicinato e delle attività pubbliche e private. Il rapporto umano deve tornare ad essere prioritario e gli spostamenti brevi, senza necessariamente richiedere l’utilizzo delle auto, almeno per le necessità quotidiane.

Quali saranno le prossime sfide che gli architetti dovranno affrontare per la gestione degli spazi e la nuova socialità definita dalla cosiddetta Ripartenza?

La sfida degli architetti è ritornare a fare gli architetti e non solo la mano armata degli immobiliaristi. Certamente questo richiede una

rinascita culturale e la politica cittadina deve spingere in questa direzione. Viceversa, anche i tentativi più lodevoli delle singole persone e di noi professionisti rimarrebbero casi isolati.

La sua ricerca architettonica è legata ai materiali, ogni edificio è una narrazione, un racconto attraverso luce e materia.

Penso a La Forgiatura o a Morimondo23, ce li vuole raccontare?

Mi riallaccio al concetto di architettura sartoriale di cui parlavo prima. Luce, aria e terra sono i materiali, o meglio gli ingredienti, che insieme a ferro, vetro e cemento costituiscono la base della mia visione della progettazione. Una visione che si rivolge ai sensi primordiali ed arcaici che accomunano noi tutti esseri umani. In tutto questo il verde, cioè la natura, rappresenta un elemento di connessione e di armonia che deve far parte dei progetti. È un concetto che si ritrova da sempre nella storia delle costruzioni umane.

La natura non è un orpello, un abbellimento ma l’origine stessa di ogni cosa e consentire di vivere/esperire realmente gli spazi. Utilizzando un termine oggi diventato di moda, il principio della biofilia cioè l’uomo nella natura, non parliamo solo di vasi o alberi modaioli realizzati sui tetti o sui terrazzi. In qualche modo ogni progetto del mio studio si pone come obiettivo la ricerca del bello e della verità assoluti. Con questi presupposti nascono i nostri progetti. Il fine ultimo è un dialogo continuo con la città e con chi passando in una strada abbia a che fare con un nostro intervento o con un nostro edificio.

Morimondo23, per esempio, è concepito come un elegante contenitore ermetico in cui tagli di luce e bucature dialogano con la strada e che di notte, illuminandosi, prende vita. Come un frutto dalla scorza dura ma con all’interno una polpa carnosa da scoprire. Morimondo23 dischiude spazi e scenari inaspettati pervasi dal verde e dalla natura, alternando spazi comuni a rassicuranti spazi privati. Forgiatura è diversa, è un’oasi urbana, dove l’architettura industriale d’inizio secolo è esaltata nel contrasto con quella moderna, entrambe tese a preservare anche la storia di coloro che vi hanno lavorato.

Nel progetto Fastweb la luce diventa una scultura che parte dalla reception e sale verticalmente unendo i livelli.

Ci vuole raccontare la sfida architettonica e illuminotecnica che ha comportato?

Quest’ultima realizzata in collaborazione con il lighting designer Marco Pollice.

Il progetto Fastweb nasce dal fortunato incontro con l’amministratore delegato della società, unito al desiderio di creare un dialogo con la nuova piazza Olivetti e con le persone che la popolano. E rapportandosi anche con gli edifici di Fondazione Prada che di notte s’illuminano con una mezzaluna di luce gialla.

“La nuvola delle idee” così l’avevo definita è poi diventata Fibercloud. L’idea è stata quella di rappresentare l’energia creativa che si irradia e percorre tutto l’edificio unendo in questo modo tutti coloro che lavorano per Fastweb. Un segno iconico che volutamente si sarebbe dovuto scoprire solo alla notte. Una sorpresa luminosa che man mano prende vita col calare

della luce diurna. Un progetto nato di getto e subito sposato dall’AD, ma anche dai nostri diretti referenti per il progetto in Fastweb. Una sfida, come spesso ci capita di fare, sia per il tempo realizzativo che avevamo a disposizione sia perché non c’era in commercio un prodotto per realizzare il nostro schizzo tridimensionale.

Questo è un progetto sviluppato con complessi software parametrici che hanno consentito di definire nel dettaglio ogni singolo componente e curvatura del manufatto. Dopo una lunga ricerca, con Marco Pollice si è deciso che venisse realizzato con un tubo Led paradossalmente curvato a mano. Duecento metri di tubo Led realizzato con elementi singoli di due metri percepiti come un unico oggetto che collega la sala del board fino alla reception d’ingresso, attraversando visivamente ogni piano. La scelta finale è stata quella di utilizzare dei tubi Led poiché garantiscono un comfort illuminotecnico che mai si sarebbe potuto raggiungere con un equivalente tubo neon e con l’ulteriore vantaggio di non creare problemi di surriscaldamento negli ambienti. nuvola Led, sopra il tavolo del board, fosse stata realizzata con sorgenti neon sarebbe stata una sorta di enorme radiatore abbagliante che avrebbe reso inutilizzabile gli spazi.

Nei suoi progetti la luce naturale e quella artificiale sono in costante dialogo, Econocom ne è un chiaro esempio. La luce, oltre che materia, è anche organizzatore di spazi?

Econocom, come Morimondo23 e più recentemente Arcadia Center, è un’enorme lanterna con una doppia natura: diurna e notturna. Di giorno sono contenitori sostanzialmente semitrasparenti, schermati da lamiere microforate per gestire la luce solare, mentre di notte prendono vita grazie alla luce colorata, come anche nel caso di Fastweb.

La luce naturale spesso diventa ancora più funzionale di una muratura o di una partizione per definire gli spazi di un edificio.

Questo aspetto mi ha sempre affascinato, al punto di aver progettato già ai tempi

dell’università un’abitazione i cui ambienti funzionali venivano definiti solo dal differente trattamento luminoso. Ogni spazio era dato dall’alternarsi di luce e ombra, tema per altro fortemente presente nell’abitazione giapponese tradizionale, di cui si parla nel Libro d’ombra, un saggio dello scrittore giapponese Jun’ichir Tanizaki.

Quindi la luce è un’importante generatrice di benessere?

A mio avviso l’obiettivo della progettazione è quello di garantire, durante tutta la durata della giornata, il massimo del contributo dell’illuminazione naturale, mantenendo al contempo grande attenzione al comfort visivo di chi lavora in quell’edificio o ufficio. Questo avviene sia tramite schermature fisse, ma anche grazie allo studio morfologico di cui si parlava prima. L’utilizzo della luce solare e lo sfruttamento dell’orientamento dell’edificio quale elemento di progettazione è una

caratteristica che accomuna le costruzioni umane già da migliaia di anni. Pensiamo ad esempio agli antichi “tulou”, le case-fortezza della popolazione Hakka della Cina sudorientale, riconosciuti Patrimonio dell’umanità dall’Unesco nel 2008, che li ha citati come esempio eccezionale di una tradizione che ha permesso di creare abitazioni uniche e funzionali.

Sono oltre vent’anni che, come studio, progettiamo edifici che “inseguono il sole”.

La morfologia di un edificio è fondamentale per gestire e accogliere la luce naturale.

L’elemento base da cui partiamo per ogni progetto, anche in caso di edifici già esistenti, è l’orientamento solare. Ad esempio, consideriamo l’Arcadia Center, in via Grosio a Milano: in questo caso abbiamo realizzato degli elementi aggiuntivi con cui siamo riusciti a gestire l’ingresso della luce del sole, garantendo il massimo comfort, oltre a dare una nuova veste estetica all’edificio.

And how Fibercloud was born, a glowing blue sculpture two hundred meters long

Would you like to tell us about your couture approach to architecture?

The “couture design” we are talking about is an instinctive and sensorial approach to design that has always accompanied me. When I start a new project be it urban areas, design objects or interior projects, I don’t know what I will make or what I will invent. There are no a priori forms or ideas and I approach the new project with great curiosity. At that moment, the customer’s requests, and the discovery of the area in which I will operate, activate the receptors and give life to the magic of a new creation. The creative phase is often guided by the nature, generally it is always different and it must first surprise myself.

Architecture, light and art are among the engines of the new Milan, what other objectives, besides that of the “città che sale”, the rising city, should it strive to achieve, especially after the drama of these months?

Aside from the concept of the rising city, which at the moment seems to me questioned in part, I think of the “città della gente”, the city of the people, which is given back to its citizens. I mean the city of the neighbourhoods

and of the life that must flourish again with the functional and virtuous mix of neighbourhood shops and public and private activities. The human relationship must once again become a priority, and so even short journeys, without necessarily requiring the use of cars, at least for daily needs.

What are the next challenges that architects will face for the management of spaces and the new sociability defined by the so-called Restart?

The challenge for architects is to return to being architects and not just the armed “hand” of real estate developers. Of course, this requires a cultural renaissance, and city politics has to push in this direction.

Conversely, even the most laudable attempts by individual persons and by us professionals would remain isolated cases.

Your architectural research is related to the materials, every building has a story, a tale told through light and matter.

I think of La Forgiatura or Morimondo23, can you tell us about them?

I refer to the concept of sartorial architecture I was talking about earlier. Light, air and earth are the materials, or rather the ingredients, which together with iron, glass and concrete form the basis of my vision of design. A vision that addresses the primordial and archaic senses that unites us all human beings. In all this, the greenery, or the nature, represents an element of connection and harmony that must be part of the projects. You will always find this concept in the history of human constructions. Nature is not a trinket or an embellishment but the very origin of everything and allows you to truly live/ experience the spaces. If we use a term that has become fashionable today, namely the principle of the biophilia, which is man in nature, we are not only talking about fashionista vases or trees created on roofs or terraces. Somehow, every project in my studio has the goal of seeking absolute beauty and truth. With these assumptions our projects are born. The ultimate goal is an ongoing dialogue with the city and with those who, passing through a street, have something to do with our intervention or with our building.

Morimondo23, for example, is conceived as an elegant hermetic container, in which the cuts of light and the openings dialogue with the street and, which at night, by lighting up, comes to life. Like a hard shell fruit, but with a fleshy pulp to be discovered in its inside.

In the Fastweb project the light becomes a sculpture that starts from the reception and rises vertically joining all the levels. Would you like to tell us about the architectural and lighting design challenges it entailed?

The latter was created in collaboration with the lighting designer Marco Pollice.

The Fastweb project was born from the lucky meeting with the company’s CEO combined with the desire to create a dialogue with the new Olivetti square and with the people who populate it. And also relating to the buildings of the Prada Foundation, which at night light up with a crescent moon of yellow light.

The cloud of ideas, “La nuvola delle idee”, so I had defined it, and later it became Fibercloud. The idea was to represent the creative energy that radiates and runs throughout the building, thus bringing together all those who work for Fastweb; an iconic sign that was, intentionally, to be discovered only at night. It is a luminous surprise that gradually comes to life as daylight falls. A project made in one go and immediately accepted by the CEO, but also by our direct contacts for the Fastweb project.

And a challenge, as often happens to us, both for the construction time we had available, and because there was no product on the market to create our three-dimensional sketch.

This is a project developed with complex parametric software that allowed us to define in detail every single component and curvature of the artefact. alternating common spaces with reassuring private spaces. The La Forgiatura is different, ùit is an urban oasis, where the industrial architecture of the beginning of the century is highlighted by contrast to the modern one, and both also designed to preserve the history of those who worked there.

made with individual elements of two meters and perceived as a single object that connects the boardroom to the entrance reception, visually crossing each floor.

The final choice was to use LED tubes as they guarantee lighting comfort that could never have been achieved with an equivalent neon tube and with the additional advantage of not creating problems of overheating in the rooms.

In fact, if the LED cloud above the board table had been made with neon sources, it would have been a sort of huge dazzling radiator that would have made the spaces unusable.

In your projects the natural light and the artificial one are in constant dialogue, the Econocom is a clear example.

Could we say that light, besides being a “material”, is also an organizer of spaces?

The Econocom, like the Morimondo23 and more recently the Arcadia Center, is a huge lantern with a double nature: day and night. During the day they are substantially semi transparent containers, shielded by micro-perforated sheets to manage sunlight, while at night they come to life thanks to coloured light, as also in the case of the Fastweb building. Natural light often becomes even more functional than a brickwork or partition wall to define the spaces of a building. This aspect has always fascinated me, to the point of having already designed a house, at my university time, whose functional environments were defined only by the different lighting treatment. Each space was given by the alternation of light and shadow, a theme also strongly present in the traditional Japanese home, which is discussed in the In praise of shadows, an essay by the Japanese writer Jun’ichir Tanizaki.

So, the light is an important creator of well-being?

In my opinion, the goal of the design process is to ensure, throughout the day, the maximum contribution from natural lighting, while maintaining great attention to the visual comfort of those who work in that building or office. This happens both through fixed shields, but also thanks to the morphological study, which was mentioned before. The use of sunlight and the exploitation of the orientation of the building as a design element are features that have been common to human constructions for thousands of years. Think for example of the ancient “tulou”, the fortresshouse of the Hakka population of south eastern China, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. They are an exceptional example of a tradition that allowed creating unique and functional homes. For over twenty years, as a studio we have been designing buildings that “chase the sun”. The morphology of a building is fundamental for managing and welcoming natural light. The basic element from which we start for each project, even in the case of existing buildings, is the solar orientation.

For example, consider the Arcadia Center, in via Grosio in Milan: in this case, we have made additional elements with which we were able to manage the entry of sunlight, guaranteeing maximum comfort, as well as giving a new look to the building aesthetics.
