News from the Garden Dear Parents and friends of GIS, With so little time left of this academic year it seems a suitable point to clarify the information regarding events at the end of this term as well as inform you of developments that will take place during the holiday period ready for the start of the new academic year: • The Upper School awards day and performances will be held on the same day at the same venue: the Goethe Institute. The Secondary pupils are expected to remain at the Goethe once the awards have concluded so that they can rehearse and prepare for their evening performances. More information regarding this will be sent home to you very soon. • The school will construct a new classroom on the First School site as part of our planned expansion and increase in pupil numbers.

Please rest assured that I have recruited the very best, experienced and fully-qualified teachers to ensure that the education provided by the school continues to improve. A full list of all staff will be included in June’s edition of the newsletter. If you are keen to plan for the next academic year the school calendar for 2012-2013 is included at the end of this newsletter. Please note that the school is open on Monday 4th June (Visakha Bucha) so that we provide your child with a complete academic year due to the enforced closure during the floods last year. Please read and enjoy the rest of this month’s newsletter. As always, if there is anything that you wish to discuss further please do not hesitate to contact me. Warmest regards,

•Miss Sarah will be offering a 3 week summer school for children aged 2 to 6 years old. • There will be a few staff changes for next year: we say farewell to Miss Sarah, Ms. Mary, Kevin and Mrs. Hodges, Ms. Dixon and Mr. Robinson. I am sure that you will want to wish them all the best for the future.

News from the Garden On Friday the 25th of May the First School enjoyed a Rainbow Day. The children were very busy making rainbow wands, a rainbow collage, rainbow biscuits and rainbow fish. The children loved the colourful water play and in the afternoon we gathered together in the garden to enjoy a variety of colourful, tasty food.

In the First School we love to recycle and create wonderful objects with your old junk so please keep old birthday cards/buttons/bottles/large and small boxes/plastic bags. Please pass them on to your child's teacher for us to re-use.

A huge thanks to Nicolas and Lucie’s mum and Keith's mum for making lovely colourful bean bags for our new Library. The children can now relax and read in comfort.

The First School were extremely excited to have a visit from the BNH ambulance. The doctors and nurses kindly showed us their ambulance and let the children try their stethoscopes. Some children were even brave enough to lie down on the doctor's stretcher!

Last month, the World Scholar's Cup rolled into town and pupils from GIS decided it was high time their school was represented. The World Scholar's Cup promotes learning, co-operation and achievement by challenging participants to explore challenging topics. This year's main topic was 'A world in flux'. Nat (Year 10), Koki (Year 10) and Aliff (Year 9) formed a team, and set about preparing for the event by researching and reading material provided by the organisers. The day itself was a great experience for the pupils with over 100 competitors from schools as far away as Jakarta and Singapore. The tasks throughout the day were aimed at testing the pupil's writing, debating, reasoning and general knowledge skills. Although it was a long and intensive day, the team worked really well and had a fantastic time, coming away with eight separate awards. The World Scholar's Cup has only been coming to Bangkok since 2008, and it is growing all the time, with twice as many competitors at this years event as last year. Hopefully more pupils from GIS will be encouraged to participate in future events, and take part in what is a unique opportunity to interact and learn along side other schools and nationalities.

News from the Garden

Garden International School held a lively Chinese Speech Contest. All the students who participated are nonnative Mandarin speakers. We had two divisions of speakers, the Primary group and the Secondary group. The students wore traditional Chinese costumes and spoke very fluent Chinese. All the students were very confident. For example, Amina from Year 9 delivered a very enthusiastic speech. She spoke about her trip to Beijing last year with her teachers and friends from Garden and how this was a most unforgettable trip. Of the Judges group, Mr. Fowler is a Chinese expert. Another four Secondary students are all excellent students in Mandarin. Parents, teachers and students cheered them on from the sidelines. All involved – judges, teachers, students and parents – came together to create a very supportive atmosphere for those speaking at the contest. As well as creating a special occasion for the school, this kind of speech contest inspires and motivates students in their studies of Mandarin. They now have more confidence and renewed interest in Chinese Language and Culture. (This is the translation of an article from a Chinese national daily newspaper)
