News from the Garden Dear Parents and friends of GIS,

professional practice.

Welcome back to the second half of term 2. The last half was packed full as always as we joined together to celebrate the investigatory nature of the Humanities subjects, the progress that all the children have made in the swimming pool, as well as participate in sporting competitions against other international schools as part of the International Schools Athletics Association. All of these efforts, whether intellectual or physical help the children to develop their understanding of the value of teamwork and cooperation.

One last thing to note is that after months of technical issues, the Grease DVDs are now finally on sale at 300 Baht each. Please contact the school office if you would like to purchase one.

The teachers have also been busy in their time out of the classroom with many attending training sessions around Bangkok to enhance their

News from the Garden

On Monday the 27th of February the GIS Under-9s football team took part in a tournament hosted by St. Andrews School on Sukhumvit 107. They played really well as a team on a blisteringly hot day and achieved credible performances against some very good sides. The highlight was their 1-0 victory over Keera Pat International School thanks to a great strike by team captain Alex Buerkle of Year 4. The team consisted of Lot and Alex of Year 4, Andaman, Ibrahim, James, Jake, Naran, Jenny, Genie and Onisha of Year 5 and Pranav of Year 6. The school is very proud of their achievements and the way in which the pupils conducted themselves throughout the day. St. Andrews has subsequently invited us to an invitational tournament to be held in the near future.

News from the Garden Shortly before the half-term break children from the Upper Primary school enjoyed a fantastic humanities day. The theme this year was Under the Sea and the day was action packed with fun filled activities that caught the imaginations of our pupils. Children wrote poems, found out a number of fishy facts and even took part in an archaeological dig unearthing hidden treasures from the depths below! All of the hard work was celebrated with the burial of a time capsule so that future generations can enjoy the excellent work produced by the children of Garden International. This year the theme for the Secondary Humanities day was The Sea, and included History, Geography, Art and English activities. As it is the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, with the James Cameron film being re-released and continued fascination with the story of the famous ocean liner, it seemed appropriate for the students to develop their historical skills while studying sources on the case. The students looked at film footage of the wreck and old photographs showing the luxurious nature of the old ship before it hit the iceberg. The students also considered the natural and varied beauty of coral reefs, which are found around the coasts of Thailand. They watched video in order to gain some inspiration for when they created a wonderful, bright and colourful mural, depicting and underwater reef scene. The students also considered the threats that this underwater paradise faces. Finally we considered the idea of “messages in a bottle and letters as a form of communication. The students wrote a letter to their future selves imagining what life would be like in the future and what they might be doing for work.

News from the Garden

At the end of last half term, the Year 10 Geographers went to Koh Samet to study the environmental impact of Tourism on several of the main resort beaches on the island. Tourism is a major source of income for Thailand and in the current climate of aiming to be sustainable and environmentally friendly, it was interesting to research the effects of the increase in tourist numbers on the natural environment. The students carried out a number of different tests to ascertain the quality of the sea, sand and buildings in the area and aimed to prove or disprove their hypotheses. The girls had a great few days, despite the fact that the weather was very hot. They also enjoyed several art workshops and produced some lovely work. They are currently writing up their fieldwork and are sure to produce some outstanding work.

News from the Garden

Last year was a huge success with our International themed school fayre. The atmosphere was amazing with teachers, parents and children enjoying every aspect from the games to the food and drink. This year the school fayre takes on a different theme and also a different date. There are only 3 more weeks until Garden‟s Easter Eggstravaganza School Fayre takes place. In order to make this fayre a huge success we need your help. How can YOU help? At this moment in time we are looking for your help to donate for the following stalls and games: • Bottle Stall (alcoholic or soft drinks or toiletries- full and unopened only) • Book Stall (good quality second hand books, DVDs or CDs) • Bric-a-Brac Stall (anything in good condition which someone else might want!) • Sweets and other small prizes • Raffle prizes - our raffle is always a fun part of the day. We would love to be able to tempt our visitors with the chance to win some luxurious prizes such as a spa, dinner vouchers or even a flight or holiday somewhere! If you or your company are able and willing to support us in this way please get in touch. • Your Donations can be dropped into the office or you can e-mail our office manager Khun Pom to let us know what you will contribute.

News from the Garden We will also have an international food stall. If you have a special dish from your own country which you wish to donate please let Ms. Lois Jones (loisj@gardenbangkok.com) know. Please bring your food to school by Friday 23rd March or on the morning of the fayre. If you would also like to have your own stall at our Easter Eggstravaganza please contact K. Apple (worawalanb@gardenbangkok.com). This year we hope to introduce a British form of market known as a „Car Boot Sale‟ – if you have plenty of household things you wish to sell then please bring your car on the day and use it as a shop! All money raised on the day will be used to support charities that the school is involved in. Thank you in advance for your kind and continued support. The School Fayre Committee

This is a reminder that the week beginning Monday 19th March will be our school‟s Book Week. Throughout the week the children will be involved in a huge variety of activities to encourage their love of reading. Friday 23rd March will be a non-uniform day and we ask that the children come to school dressed as a book character. We would also like parents to volunteer to be „Mystery Readers‟ and come to the classes to read a book of your choice to the children. If you would like to share a story, poems or non-fiction book with a class, please email Miss Kirstie (kirstied@gardenbangkok.com) stating which day between the 19th to the 23rd March, a time (am or pm) and an age group you would like to visit .

February 2012 Exhibition: January 31st – February 26th The Rotunda Gallery: "Garden of Eden”, by Tiasa Iris. The work of Tjaša Iris is inspired by gardens. Last spring she spent two months in Chiang Mai where Bhubing Palace Gardens were her greatest inspiration. She dedicated her exhibition to this theme. The paintings describe beautiful flower gardens in bright, vivid, lush colors. Tjaša fell in love with SE Asia. Her main motifs are gardens and nature with lush vegetation. Tjaša says: “I capture the essence of the places I visit by creating vibrant expressionistic paintings: gardens with lush vegetation and ornaments, busy landscapes with abstracted swirling clouds… Through the emotive use of color and shape, I invite the viewer to celebrate the joy of life through my art. Bhubing Palace Gardens were among the most beautiful places I've even seen on Earth. A true Garden of Eden." Tjaša Iris web site: www.tjasairis.com The Garden Café Gallery: “Colourful Figures in Unfamiliar Places”, by Nancy Zarider. Nancy Zarider, an American artist living in Bangkok, will exhibit a selection of her monotypes and paintings on paper. She studied art at Washington University in St. Louis. She has had multiple careers, as a textile designer for fashion and home furnishings, art director and photographer for several newspapers, and art teacher. Exploring the ways people‟s appearance embodies their culture, Nancy is intrigued by the process of experimentation, by the mixture of colour, texture and stroke, and by the intersection of abstract elements in meaningful figurative expression. Sunday February 12th: Neilson Hays Arts Festival. The Festival will showcase the work of a wide variety of local and international artists working in a variety of media. These original works will be available for sale. It is rare in Thailand that the work of this number of artists can be viewed in one accessible location. The Arts Festival‟s activities will also include artist demonstrations, live music, drama, dance and children‟s art and crafts activities. There will be refreshments and food for sale from the Gallery Cafe throughout the day. GENERAL By popular demand, Neilson Hays Library brings you the latest quality international magazines, to take away and enjoy at your leisure. 50THB a week per magazine (up to 4 week hire).
