Support Guide | Girls Preparatory School

AT GIRLS PREPARATORY SCHOOL, we recognize that each student has her own learning style, so we strive to meet each girl where she is and support her in her growth. As part of our learner-centered culture, our Center for Teaching and Learning offers a welcoming and inclusive environment that teaches and reinforces skills with small-group and individual instruction designed for the unique learning styles of each student. Whether she needs help balancing her classes and cocurriculars, wants strategies for math class, or simply desires a quiet place to study, The Center for Teaching and Learning is designed to help each girl realize her highest academic potential.

HELPING HER ACHIEVE THAT ‘A-HA!’ MOMENT In collaboration with the Dean of Teaching and Learning, our Learning Specialists facilitate communication between students, teachers, parents, and advisors to help each girl achieve independence in her educational journey. A multitiered approach that centers on executive functioning skills—those that help students organize, plan, and prioritize—empowers students as they learn to study, manage their time, and advocate for themselves.

A GIRL, NOT A GRADE… At GPS, we believe good education is rooted in human connection that, in turn, creates stronger, more vibrant communities. My own experience as a student here—where I was part of a supportive and powerful sisterhood that valued true learning more than a letter grade or test score—was transformative. Today, I continue to see GPS students gain confidence, grow in their abilities, and encourage each other along the way. As a lifelong learner and 24-year member of the GPS science department, I have been excited to evolve beyond the constructs of my discipline to support a learner-centered culture as the Dean of Teaching and Learning. The Center for Teaching and Learning provides faculty, staff, and students a dedicated space where they can be empowered, involved, and celebrated in their learning adventures. You might find our team in the classroom, teaching Middle School Skills classes, working individually with students in an Upper School English class, or hosting roundtable discussions with teachers on how to engage girls through a diverse array of learning strategies. Students can ask for help with a particular class, request homework assistance, get study tips, work with peer tutors, learn ways to relax, or simply talk with a trusted adult. And the best part? It’s open to all students—with or without a diagnosed learning difference or teacher referral—and their teachers. I feel confident your daughter will grow her love of learning here, and I invite you to visit campus and see for yourself. Sincerely, Katye Adams Couch ’92 Dean of Teaching and Learning
