Dear Friends: What an incredible year! Staff, volunteers, and especially the girls have been on “cloud nine” as we celebrated our centennial birthday.
What’s a 100th birthday without a celebration?
Niagara Falls will never be the same after our unprecedented Rock the Falls event. Nearly 3,000 Girl Scouts and Canadian Girl Guides converged on the grounds and showcased a “day in the life” of Girl Scouting, sang Girl Scout songs, listened to great music, and held hands in solidarity across the Peace Bridge. Our fun didn’t end there; our girls participated in a national Take Action project called Forever Green. Rain gardens were planted in Buffalo, Rochester, Batavia, and Jamestown. Trees were also planted at Old Fort Niagara. We are sure our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, had no idea of the impact and depth her decision would have on girls and young women across the United States and abroad.
This organization’s commitment to understanding the dynamics of girls through GSUSA’s Research Institute is remarkable. We are getting a better understanding about girls – their interests, fears, and joys – and we’re using that information to create amazing programs to build girls of courage, confidence, and character for the next 100 years. Through this research, the energy and the direction that our organization is taking to make progress in developing girls’ leadership ability is exciting! Our focus throughout the past year has been to continue making inroads in the five key areas: science, technology, engineering, and math; financial leadership; healthy living; environmental leadership; and global citizenship. We focus on what girls need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. The only way we can make transformational shifts in leadership is to begin this process in girlhood. 2012 – The Year of the Girl
When Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouts in 1912, it was more about crafts, cookies, and camping. Today — with 3.2 million registered Girl Scouts and more than 50 million alumnae nationwide — we’re more about shaping leaders. To accomplish this goal, Girl Scouts has developed a movement — Year of the Girl — to ensure every girl has the opportunity to reach her potential. Girl Scouts of the USA celebrated our 100th year with events that honored our founder and focused on our bright future.
Rock the Falls To celebrate our centennial, thousands of Girl Scouts and Canadian Girl Guides of all ages met in Niagara Falls on a beautiful June weekend for a Sing-a-Long of traditional and historical Girl Scout songs and a fun night of camping at Old Fort Niagara. On Sunday, 50 Girl Scouts and 50 Girl Guides spanned the Rainbow Bridge to commemorate this momentous occasion.
Global Citizenship
Forever Green Our 100th anniversary Take Action Project was a global effort to improve the environment and protect natural resources. At GSWNY, troops planted rain gardens in locations throughout the region. Rain gardens increase green space and wildlife habitats and improve water quality through infiltration. Efforts began on Earth Day and will make a lasting impact on our environment for years to come!
In 2012, Girl Scouts of the USA launched ToGetHerThere, the largest fundraising and advocacy initiative dedicated to girls’ issues in U.S. history. The multi-year effort will seek to create balanced leadership – the equal representation of women in leadership positions in all sectors and levels of society – within one generation. Supporters are invited to visit ToGetHerThere.org to learn more about the effort, sign the pledge, and get everyone they know to do the same. When girls succeed, so does society. We know that together, we can get her there.

The Gold Awards
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award that Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors can earn. This year, 67 bright, young leaders identiďŹ ed wide-ranging problems in their communities and implemented solutions. Each young woman dedicated a minimum of 80 hours to her project and made a positive impact in her community.

Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest award that a Junior (grades 4-5) Girl Scout can earn and the Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award for Cadettes (grades 6-8). Girls work individually or as a team to identify a need in their community, create a plan, and put the plan into action.

Programs/Advocacy Platforms
Financial Literacy
Girl Scouts of Western New York brings Girl Scouting programs to girls and young women between the ages of 5 and 17. Girls discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. We focus on what girls need to thrive in a rapidly changing world and concentrate on the following advocacy platforms to encourage and engage Girl Scouts of all ages.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)
Financial Literacy
Activities related to science, technology, engineering, and math now account for more than half of all Girl Scout Awards. We introduce more girls to inspiring role models in scientific fields than any other organization.
Millions of girls now learn their economic ABCs in Girl Scouts. Setting goals, budgeting, and saving are vital life skills. Sooner or later, 90 percent of all women will be financially self-sufficient.
Local programs include Techbridge, which features engaging, hands-on activities surrounding five engineering science themes. Girls learn a variety of skills involved in developing, testing, and designing products while learning about engineering careers firsthand from role models in the field. Medical Students from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the American Medical Women’s Association present Girls Go to Med School to help older Girl Scouts learn about career opportunities and college preparation. Younger girls can enjoy Frosty Fun (creating snow paintings and sculptures), Computer Workshops, and many other programs. .
The Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches goal setting, decision-making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. Reality Store invites girls to “go shopping” and test budgeting and life planning skills. They choose a career and family; buy a car and a house; open a checking and savings account; and shop at various stations.
Environmental Leadership
Healthy Living The Girl Scout program recognizes that physical health, emotional health, and self-esteem are all connected. We support the “whole girl.” Programs like Adventure Games and Ropes Challenge Course encourage team building, communication, and problem solving while Gymnastics, Fencing, and White Water Rafting allow girls to try a new sport and gain confidence. In Girls Get Moving, young Girl Scouts try new ways to eat healthy and have fun without even realizing it’s exercise. During Celebrate Differences at the Museum of Disability, Girl Scouts learn about celebrating differences through live puppet theater. Kids on the Block is an internationally acclaimed education program that promotes the awareness and acceptance of individual differences through the use of puppets.
Tifft Nature Preserve offer opportunities to experience nature and learn what it means to care for our planet. Cleanups, tree plantings, and gardens are popular activities for Girl Scouts at all levels.
Global Citizenship Girl Scouts makes the world smaller and the girl bigger. Through the world’s largest organization of girls, she can have a global impact and a global voice. The Girl Scouts has a full consultative status at the United Nations. Travel opportunities to Savannah, Georgia, birthplace of founder Juliette Gordon Low and international destinations, such as India, connect Girl Scouts to the world. On World Thinking Day, girls participate in activities and projects with global themes to honor their sister Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other countries.
Environmental Leadership Girl Scouts combines environmental education and community action on a national scale. Since the launch of our environmentally focused program series in 2009, more than 200,000 girls have tackled issues such as noise pollution, global warming, and soil contamination. In all seasons, Helmer Nature Preserve and

Women of Distinction is Girl Scouts of Western New York’s signature fundraising event where we honor women across Western New York for their strength in character, dedication to community service, and commitment to mentoring and encouraging girls and young women. The Family Partnership Campaign is a joint effort between Girl Scout families and Girl Scouts of Western New York to provide quality Girl Scout programming for more than 20,000 girls.
