journeys and girl’s guide Girl Scouts is lots of fun and a great way to learn new things, make friends, and develop leadership skills. Based on council feedback and research with girls, parents and volunteers, GSUSA has streamlined and simplified the Girl Scout program offerings by providing new and revised books and other resources. Beginning Fall 2011, the national Girl Scout program experience will consist of two products – Journeys and The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting.

Journeys

Journeys include three series of subjects for each Girl Scout program level: • It’s Your World – Change it! • It’s Your Planet – Love It! • It’s Your Story – Tell It! The Journeys are the core of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience that provides an exploration of all three keys to leadership - discover, connect and take action. Each Journey directly connects to the 15 national outcomes and provides detailed guidance for adults. Each Journey – their awards and badge activities – work together to create a complete program portfolio for the Girl Scout leadership experience. Each Journey can be ordered through the council’s online store – shop.girlscoutsjs.org.

Girls Guide to Girl Scouting

In September 2011, GSUSA will debut an exciting new resource for girls, The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. Girls at each grade level will have their own Girl’s Guide, so there will be six publications. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting will include: a variety of badge offerings, handbook sections covering traditions and history, Cookie badges, an awards log, and much more. The Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting will be available for purchase in the council store or online at shop.girlscoutsjs.org.

What will you find in the guide

Badge activities are developed for girls to begin immediately. No training is needed. Here's an overview of The Girl’s Guide’s content: Handbook Section: My Girl Scouts Section is designed just for girls, and allows girls to personalize their Girl Scout experience by scrapbooking and documenting activities Legacy Badges: Artist, The Girl Scout Way, Citizen, Cook, First Aid, Athlete, Naturalist Financial Literacy Badges: Girls can earn a different Financial Literacy Badge each year. Daisies earn Financial Literacy “leaves.” Cookie Business Badges: Girls earn different Cookie Business Badges each year. Daisies earn Cookie Business “leaves.” Skill Building (Brownies and older): Outdoors, Performance, Animals, Practical Life Skills, Healthy Living, Manners, Do It Yourself, Digital Arts, Adventure, Craft, Storytelling, Creative Play, Investigation, Science & Technology, Innovation PLUS: Make Your Own, My Promise, My Faith Pin, Journey Summit Pin, PA, CIT, VIT, Bronze/Silver/Gold Awards

Put It All Together

The Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting complements Journeys with skill-building badge activities and will feature new badges on many traditional and beloved topics from nature to art to cooking and first aid, as well as new topics based on girl interests. Some activities included in the badge offerings will be the same as activities in previous badges; others will be different.

Pathways through Girl Scouts

There are many ways to be a Girl Scout! Girl Scout Pathways are how we describe all the wonderful ways that you can participate. Pathways can be combined any way that works for you, and Pathways give you the flexibility to explore the many ways Girl Scouting can be part of your life. Camp Experience our day camp during the summer or special activities throughout the year. Events Participate in activities in your community, region or council focused on a particular theme, such as Spooktacular, badge programs, Silver and Gold Award and all the activities in this program guide. Series Participate in a series of sessions relating to a specific theme or purpose, such as clubs or community-based activities for Individual girls. Troop Girls meet regularly during the school year with the same girls and engage in volunteer-led high-quality programs that support learning, relationship building, and fun. Travel Girls participate in leadership and cross-cultural opportunities through instate, national, and international travel. fall product sale program The 2011 Fall Product Sale Program begins September 30, 2011 This activity is a wonderful start-up opportunity for individual girls and troops. Not only does it help girls earn money to pay for activities throughout the year, it also highlights the core Girl Scout messages of entrepreneurship, team work and goal setting through age-appropriate learning activities. It also brings parents and girls together. You get a chance to encourage your daughter while becoming an inspiration for her as well. The 2011 Fall Product Sale Program consists of two components. The nut/candy sale is a great opportunity for younger girls to become comfortable interacting with adults, while older girls learn the power of planning and perseverance by working to acheive a self-made goal. The magazine sale builds those same skills while also highlighting the technology that is increasingly becoming part of our lives. At all ages, you should also use the program as a chance to teach girls about setting and achieving goals. Connecting product sale activities with upcoming Girl Scout events is a great way to do just that. By participating in the Fall Product Sale Program girls directly support the programs and opportunities they’re involved with throughout the year. • On average, 60 percent of the cost of each product sold goes back to Girl Scouting in Monmouth and Ocean counties, through incentives and program cost reduction. The remaining 40 percent covers the cost of each product. • Product Sales enable troops to fund activities like trips and buy materials, including supplies and crafts. • Financial aid is provided through product sales for any girl who cannot afford the cost of Girl Scouting.

• Materials available for girl and troop use are maintained, including tents, camping gear, flags, supplies and books. • Product sales fund training programs, teaching the Girl Scout Leadership Experience as well as safety and basic first aid. • The cost of council and regional programs is subsidized through product sales. • Council communication tools – including the council website, Jersey Shore Wave and Shore Things – are maintained and expanded to meet girl and volunteer needs.

It’s now easier than ever for regions to earn money to fund local girl activities using the Fall Product Sale Program. Each region will earn $2 for every troop that participates. If 70% of the region’s troops participate, the region receives $7 per troop; 80% is $8 per troop, and 90% participation is $9 per troop. Troop participation is defined as a troop PGA of at least 15 nut items or three magazine subscriptions. Based on the number of regional troops as of December 31, 2010, every region reaching the 70% goal will earn at least $1,000 from the 2011 Fall Product Sale Program.

fall product sale program Magazine / Nut Promises

Family and friends can once again place online magazine orders after receiving an e-mail from a participating Girl Scout. Girls can also ask those same families and friends to make a nut promise – and commit to a product order. Once online registration is complete, emails can be sent to friends and families, offering the opportunity to order magazines online. Girls do not need to collect money or deliver magazines. Girls sending 12 or more emails will earn a special patch. They will only receive credit for the patch if they give their Detailed Order Report to the troop product sale coordinator. Girls can also select individual e-mail addresses and choose to send a nut promise as well. Family and friends can select the items they promise to purchase using an online form. To complete the promise, each Girl Scout must collect money and deliver the promised items. The record of these nut promises can be found on the Detailed Order Report.

Gift of Caring

The Fall Product Sale Program is a perfect opportunity for friends and family to “give back” to their community during the holiday season. This year, the council will manage donations to both the Monmouth/Ocean Food Bank and members of the military. Donations are a great way to give back to your community and support a girl participating in the program. A Gift of Caring is also a great way to get someone involved who may not want to purchase any nuts or magazines for themselves. The council will deliver all products. If girls would prefer to select a different Gift of Caring recipient they can by simply letting the council know who the donations will benefit.

Effective with the 2009 Fall Product Sale Program, this initiative replaces ALL previous wider opportunity programs for older girls. It is reevaluated on a yearly basis to ensure girls have the maximum opportunity to benefit.

Make the most of your

Product Sale Advantage (PSA) Girls have the option of PSA participation with these benefits: Fall Product Girls will receive one dollar ($1) per nut item, after the first 35 Sale items sold. The troop/group/individual will also receive the basic commission from the first item sold. Cookie Sale Girls will receive one dollar ($1) per cookie box sold, after the first 75 boxes sold. The troop/group/individual will also receive the basic commission from the first item sold. The qualifications and criterion vary by Girl Scout level. Juniors Girls who commit to the PSA have the current Girl Scout year’s fall product sale and cookie sales to earn money toward a council-sponsored two or three night June trip during the same year. Cadettes Girls who commit to the PSA have the current Girl Scout year’s Seniors fall product sale and cookie sales to earn money for one-year Ambassadors earning programs. An additional Girl Scout year is added for girls planning participation in two-year earning programs. Two Year Earning Programs • Council-sponsored national and international Wider Opportunities 2012 - London, Paris, Barcelona 2013 - Australia 2013 - London, Paris, Florence, Venice, Milan • GSUSA destinations • Gold Award projects requiring special funding Girls who commit to the PSA are not eligible to receive other incentives, except for patches. Once declared, money is non-transferrable to another program. If a girl backs out of a program, the money she earned will be transferred to a council financial assistance fund. GS Leadership Experience Courses (GSLE)

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience helps girls and adults develop their own leadership skills. Girls of different ages follow different “Journeys” towards developing themselves as leaders. They discover things about themselves and the world around them. They connect with their friends, other Girl Scouts, and families and take action in the community, locally and globally, to make the world a better place. Girl Scouts of the USA has designed a step by step course for leaders to understand the new Girl Scout Leadership Experience and provide direction for working with existing program materials. This course will show leaders of every age level how to lead the girls through their own leadership experience called GS Journeys as well as instructions on using other badges for each level to enhance the leadership experience for girls and adults. Course is also available online. service projects Birthday in a Box

Children deserve a Birthday Party, no matter what circumstances they are in. Here is a way we can help make that happen. Decorate a box with Birthday slogans and designs, then fill it with “birthday fun;” cake mix, frosting, party favors, candles, cards, a small gift (new book or little game). You have just made a child’s birthday special. These boxes need to be complete. You may donate your birthday box to any local charity that supports children, or drop it off at one of the Council Service Centers. Contact: BJ – Monmouth Service Center Susu – Ocean Service Center

Local Animal Shelters

Local animal shelters are always looking for items. A few suggestions include: Purina Kitten or Cat Chow, NEW kitty litter pans, heating pads, blankets and towels, cat & kitten non-catnip toys, grooming brushes – cat/dog, sponges with scrub side, and bleach. Supplies should be dropped off at your local animal shelter. Contact: BJ – Monmouth Service Center Susu – Ocean Service Center

Aluminum Drink Can Tabs

Can tabs are a source of income for Ronald McDonald House, a facility that provides a home away from home to the immediate families of seriously ill children who are being treated in local hospitals. Ronald McDonald House sells the tabs to a local recycling company for cash. Aluminum Can Tabs can be dropped off at Ronald McDonald House, 131 Bath Avenue, Long Branch, or you may bring them to one of the Council Service Centers. This patch program is also a great way to get girl members’ family involved in troops. There is a patch the first year and a rocker for each subsequent year. 22

Green Footprints – Count the Hours You Give in Community Service!

How many green footprints can we leave across our community, our towns and counties? Let’s work together and find out. registration procedures How to Register

There are currently three ways to register – Online, Walk-In or Mail. Telephone and/or fax registrations will not be accepted. Online

All programs offered by the council are listed on the council’s website, girlscoutsjs.org. Most programs are available for online registration. These are noted with a check mark. When you go online, those programs have a “Register Now” button displayed prominently at the bottom of the program’s online description page. Send Them In Fill out the Program Registration form, attach payment(s) with a separate check for each program and session, and mail to: Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore Attn: Program 1405 Old Freehold Road Toms River, NJ 08753 All mailed registrations will be processed by postmark date, not date received. Walk Them In Completed registration forms, with attached payment, will be accepted at either Service Center. Please place both the registration form and payment in an envelope with event name and current date on front. Their “postmark date” will be the date they are placed in the Program Registration Box.

Special Needs

Please let us know in advance if you need the following: wheelchair accessibility, sign-language interpreter, food allergy adaptations or other special needs. Due to the nature of some of these activities, accommodations may not be available in all circumstances. If you have questions about a particular activity do not hesitate to contact the Program Department.

Other Things to Remember…

• Everyone participating in a Council Program must be a registered Girl Scout. If you are not currently, please also include an extra $12 for GSUSA membership dues. • Pre-Registration and pre-payment is required for all programs. No “walk-ins” will be permitted. Please enclose a separate check for each program. • Events are closed when all registration slots are filled, even if before the listed deadline date. If an event is full, you may ask to be placed on a waiting list. • Confirmations will be mailed or emailed after the registration deadline. If you did not receive one, please call one of the Program Registrars. • Most registration fees and deposits are NON REFUNDABLE OR TRANSFERABLE. Refunds will be issued if an event is cancelled. • Girl permission slips and health forms are the responsibility of the troop leader/advisor. • Girls may register individually or with a troop for any program. Individual girls, Juniors or younger, should be accompanied by an adult. For day trips and overnights, an adult must accompany Cadette, Senior or Ambassador girls as well. • NO Tagalongs - a tagalong is a child not registered in your troop, such as a sibling of any age. A tagalong can also be a Girl Scout who attends an event that is offered for an age level different than her own. Tagalongs change the dynamics of the event, which is not fair to the other participants or the facilitator.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Events and trips may be cancelled if either the Monmouth/Ocean Service Center and/or Monmouth/Ocean County Schools close due to inclement weather. In the event of a cancellation, the adult listed on the registration form will receive a phone call. Cancellations will also be listed on www.girlscoutsjs.org, or by calling 800-785-2090, ext. 218. Only those registered for an event will be notified of any changes or cancellations.
