Science, Technology, Engineering & Math

You Like STEM? That’s for Girls! GS Botics, also known as Girl Scout Junior Troop 20597, dove right into their first season as a competing team in the FIRST LEGO League. Their courage and teamwork paid off when they took home Best Rookie Team at their first regional competition. These four young girls from Chicago worked together in the unique program that inspires young people to be science and technology leaders through mentor-based programs. FIRST LEGO League requires that each team design and program a LEGO robot to perform a specific task based on the year’s competition theme. “I think because of all the STEM programs I’ve done have shown me something new, when we were asked if we wanted to start a team, I thought it would be something cool to do,” said GS Botics team member Allyson Rodriguez. After an experience at a Journey World program about space, Allyson better understood scientific method, and said that knowledge helped her team when they encountered problems during the competition. They asked “What if…?” instead of settling on a solution. “We would work out together a solution that was best for the team,” she said. “Either we would use one idea or took pieces of each idea.” Team parent, Rosa Garcia, noticed a difference in the team as she observed them during the competition season. “The girls went from saying, ‘My idea’ and ‘I did this,’ to acknowledging each other’s strengths, allowing the stronger girl to lead and allowing others the opportunity to learn,” Rosa said. “They blew me away.”
