Embrace Possibilities 2024 Annual Report

Bold adventures, exciting milestones, and inspiring growth made 2024 a year to remember for Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana!
Camp Juniper Knoll’s 100th Anniversary drew record crowds of girls, families, volunteers, and alums back to our cherished, beautiful camp to celebrate timeless memories of sailing on the Pleasant Lake, singing campfire songs long after dark, making new friends, and learning outdoor skills.
Project Law Track, a perennial favorite in its 14th year, partnered teen Girl Scouts with professional attorneys and judges eager to mentor them through a mock trial that tested girls’ critical thinking skills and gave them an insider’s view of a variety of legal careers.
These and so many more moments came to life because we listened to girls.
Girls told us in no uncertain terms that they don’t want someone to just tell them they are special; they want to discover it for themselves through trial, triumph, and every moment in between.
Our Girl Scouts are leaders, dreamers, and changemakers. They are creating their own paths and shaping bold, bright futures as they discover and honor their authentic selves. And thousands of dedicated, caring adults are there to cheer them on, every step of the way.
That’s what makes our Girl Scout Movement so powerful.
As we reflect on everything that girls, and this council, have achieved this year, we are hopeful, optimistic, and energized. We promise to keep opening doors, building bridges, and cheering them on as they embrace their possibilities. The future is bright, and it’s led by girls.
Yours in Girl Scouting,

Every Girl Scout has their own curiosity, dreams, and talents—so when they come together to decide which of the thousands of Girl Scout activities to try, the sky’s the limit. Whether visiting an animal shelter, camping, hosting a dance-off, or filming a movie—they’re learning to take risks, trust their gut, and team up with others for good.
The secret sauce holding it all together? Joy.
Fun activities, memorable experiences, prestigious awards, travel opportunities, and lifelong sisterhood are all benefits of being a Girl Scout.
It’s what gives Girl Scouts the confidence to be themselves, unapologetically. It’s what makes them feel safe enough to try new things and cheer each other on in tough times. It’s the support that can get them up on tough mornings, help them raise their hand in class, and even climb to the top of a mountain.

Making friends is a core tenet familiar to those who know Girl Scouts. Generations of girls have sung that “one is silver and the other gold,” referring to the importance of new friends and old.
Yet research shows that 75 percent of female children ages 6 – 17 in Indiana have trouble making or keeping friends. We also know that many girls living in low-income communities simply aren’t Girl Scouts, for myriad reasons that two years of dedicated efforts under a four-year innovation grant funded by Lilly Endowment Inc. are now bringing to light.
After deep listening sessions with girls, families, and local organizations, teams of community engagement specialists throughout the state heard that access to convenient, safe locations is one such barrier. But it’s not the only one. There are numerous issues facing girls’ physical, academic, emotional, and social wellness, especially in communities with limited resources, generational inequities, and complicated family scenarios.
To successfully reach more girls with positive childhood experiences, our work is focusing on providing greater access to trusted mentors, safe spaces, and relatable content co-designed with families and community partners to help more girls thrive despite their complicated lives. Additionally, Girl Scouts is seeking to innovate outdated practices and embrace the opportunity to be a changemaker advocating for girls’ overall wellness and ability to thrive long after childhood.
The second edition of the Indiana Girl Report, published in 2024 by the six Girl Scout councils that serve Indiana in partnership with the Indiana Youth Institute, reveals that positive childhood experiences, addressing interpersonal aggression, and access to mental health supports are three specific areas of support where collective efforts can more positively impact girls’ overall wellness.
At the conclusion of the second year of the grant, we began to see new opportunities for serving girls and communities better. By designing multiple iterations of prototypes that use concepts that were learned through the community listening sessions, we are better understanding what girls and families in low-income communities want for themselves and how Girl Scouts provide better access to those experiences.
Our council understands the importance of hearing our Girl Scout’s voices. This year, we held two roundtables giving Girl Scouts the opportunity to share their thoughts on various topics. In October of 2023 we held an International Day of the Girl roundtable, which was cohosted with our CEO, Nancy Wright and Girl Scout Mckenzie. The Girl Scouts discussed their Girl Scout experiences, the role of gender bias and how they overcome it, pressures they felt, and how they cope, as well as issues they want to advocate for, ending the roundtable discussing their resilience and dealing with imposter syndrome.
In March of 2024 the Girl Scouts along with some adult leaders hosted another roundtable in honor of Women’s History Month and Girl Scouts Birthday. This empowering roundtable discussion covered the topics of Girl Scout Week and the incredible impact of women leaders! Our panel of inspiring women shared their personal journeys, insights, and strategies for making a difference in their communities and beyond. From breaking barriers to championing change, we explored what it means to be a woman of impact in today’s world.
February is Body Positivity month. We shared social media content that embraced fashion in the way that feels good to you. During cookie season, we encouraged our audiences to skip conversations about diets because it teaches Girl Scouts to prioritize how their body looks. Instead, we encouraged people to stay positive and support gift of caring or pass by simply saying “no thank you.” Audrina Sinclair from CBS sent in a video that encouraged us all to “walk in who we are, because it is beautiful.” Our goal was to uplift and support evereyone on their journey to body positivity. We want them to remember, they are worthy, they are loved, and they are enough just as they are.
On August 3, Kinder Joy of Moving brought energy to Camp Palos with 200 people enjoying a 1-mile fun run, food trucks, face painting, games, and more. With sponsorship from Kinder, Girl Scouts and their families had a blast at Joy of Moving.
Nearly 200 volunteers participated in our Volunteer Expo in June to learn, network, and have fun! With more than 30 workshop sessions we provided volunteers with insights and resources to set them up for a successful year and beyond – and gathered their perspective on our mission – all of which makes a difference in the lives of girls. Our volunteers are our superheroes, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their tireless energy and dedication.
At our annual Tribute to Achievement dinner on April 4, we illuminated the transformative power of mentorship under the theme “Power Her Dreams,” and raised more money than ever before. Mentors play a pivotal role in shaping young lives, providing support, encouragement, and opportunities that turn dreams into realities. Through programs like Camp CEO, where professional women mentor Girl Scouts one-on-one, girls experience firsthand the profound impact of mentorship. The success of our Tribute to Achievement dinner isn’t just about dollars raised, but about the countless dreams ignited and futures transformed. Thanks to our incredible donors, we raised a record-breaking $1.16 million, making this our biggest TTA ever! But it wasn’t just about the funds – it was about the energy, the community, and the impact. We had the largest number of attendees, sponsors, and the energy was off the charts!
Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible, especially our award honorees — the Landgraf Family Foundation, Brooke Wiseman, and Dr. Karen Eng — our Board of Directors, and each and every one of our volunteers and supporters who work together to power girls’ dreams.
In 2024, GSGCNWI combined our recruiting and troop support teams to better serve our members and volunteers, increase efficiency and collaboration, and work more cohesively. This change has led to a more streamlined experience for service unit managers and troop leaders in giving them one primary staff contact.
Maureen Jamrock is a lifelong Girl Scout of 49 years. She served as a volunteer and on the Board of South Cook, one of our legacy council and the GSGCNWI Board from 2008-2024. Maureen remains involved, demonstrating her unwavering commitment with her support and volunteerism. To thank Maureen, we planted a tree in honor of her incredible lifetime of service. We hope you’ll read the dedication the next time you’re at Camp Palos.
Our camps are living ecosystems where campers, Counselors in Training (CITs), staff, plants, and animals coexist. Each summer, the ecosystem comes alive with the laughter and excitement of girls exploring the outdoors, learning new skills, and forging lifelong friendships. The forests, lakes, and meadows are not just backdrops but active participants in each camper’s journey. The towering trees provide shade and shelter, while the clear waters invite moments of reflection and fun. The immersion in nature that Girl Scouts experience at camp fosters physical health, mental wellness, and a deep appreciation for the environment.
In May, about 200 girls and family members participated in a planting day at the Butterfly Garden at Camp Greene Wood. Rose Pest Solutions donated 191 native plants that will attract pollinators and grow sustainably for campers to enjoy year after year.
During a sustainability-focused Spark Day with the Society of Plastics Engineers, Girl Scouts learned about the purpose of packaging and the different types of packaging to discover how to recycle different materials. They created their own bird feeders to take home using recycled water bottles and putting the Four R’s - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover – into practice. Girl Scouts also learned about polymers and how to manipulate them by attempting to insert a wooden dowel into an inflated balloon.
2024 marked the 100th anniversary of Camp Juniper Knoll in East Troy, Wisconsin. We celebrated with a birthday bash in September and reflected on the incredible impact outdoor experiences have on our girls. The great outdoors offers invaluable benefits, from fostering mental wellness to promoting physical health and simply having fun.
According to the American Psychological Association, “exposure to nature has been linked to a host of benefits, including improved attention, lower stress, better mood, reduced risk of psychiatric disorders, and even upticks in empathy and cooperation.” Our camps embody these benefits, evident in the joyful spirits of our campers. Thanks to more than 30 generous donors, including longtime Girl Scout volunteers and residents who live near Camp Juniper Knoll, we raised $35,000. Next time you’re at Camp Juniper Knoll, check out the improvements Girl Scouts made for the 100th Anniversary - the freshly painted boat house and new floating dock.
At the heart of our camps is each girl’s transformative experience. Campers build essential life skills and resilience, they learn to navigate challenges, work collaboratively with peers, and develop leadership abilities. In partnership with the Landgraf Family Campership Endowment Fund, we provided more than $30,000 in camp scholarships, or “camperships” to more than 100 Girl Scouts and their families, making summer camp more accessible to girls. We are thrilled to be able to provide full and partial camperships to girls in our community through the endowment fund which will grow over time, thanks to generous contributions from the Landgraf family and everyone who donates toward their ongoing campership fund matching challenge.
We had life changing experiences at camp. Soon after the girls arrived, we witnessed their stress and tension lighten. They ran to pick their bunk, unpack, and explore camp. We explained this camp is theirs, that it belongs to all of us. One girl was slowly looking around, taking it all in and said, a bit choked up, ‘I’ve never had anything so beautiful belong to me.’Girl Scout camp is their safest space to leave trauma behind and create new joyful memories. To begin fresh.
— Irene Crea, Community Relationships Manager, speaking about a camping trip with Girl Scouts in foster care.
Summer Camp participants 2,155 girls attended 220 camp sessions.
125 girls in foster and shelter care attended camp at Camp Greene Wood and Camp Butternut Springs.
149 Outdoor Workshops
176 Custom Programs engaged (4,086 Girl Scouts; 2,561 adults)
Travel: nine girls received scholarships for trips to Mackinac Island, Italy, Space Camp in Alabama, and Tall Ship Sailing.
Spark Days: 200 girls attended six career events connecting with professionals from ComEd, DHL, IKEA, HAVI, Rose Pest Solutions, and Society of Plastics Engineers.
World Thinking Day: 1,470 girls engaged in global awareness activities focused on environmental sustainability and peace.
HAVI, a global leader in integrated supply chain management for the food industry, hosted “Imagine, Invent, and Innovate”—a Spark Day where Girl Scouts dove into the world of marketing. They designed promotional posters, created toy concepts, and learned about the process of making toys. They’re already dreaming big!
The journey began with a staggering 250 talented girls signing up within a mere five hours to develop a unique dessert using Girl Scout cookies. This contest was created in partnership with celebrity Chef Fabio Viviani, the culinary visionary and restaurateur behind the dessert company, Jars. The competition was fierce, but only the top 5 girls made it to the final stage with their original cookie creations.
Thursday, January 4 was an unforgettable day as our finalists gathered at the Jars by Fabio Dessert
Restaurant. The air was buzzing with anticipation as these young culinary geniuses recreated their mouthwatering desserts right before our eyes. The tension mounted as the final judging took place, knowing that only one could be crowned the ultimate winner.
The winner was our incredible 6-year-old prodigy, Madeleine Busse! Her creation, the Mint Chocolate Express, stood out amongst the competition and captured the hearts of our esteemed judges. Madeleine was featured on ABC 7 News, alongside Fabio himself, where they shared the story behind her coveted Jar and cookie concoctions. This young culinary entrepreneur is going places! Madeleine’s winning jar.
Bristol, from Troop 75466, on March 20, 2024, sold her 100,000th cookie box over her seven years as a Girl Scout. As part of her thank you gift to the customer who purchased the 100,000th box, Bristol created a special basket containing Girl Scout Cookies, cookie rewards that Bristol had earned, and a handwritten thank you note.
“I love being a Girl Scout because I love making the world a better place,” said Bristol. “I hand-deliver every box I sell, and I especially love hand-delivering to our hometown heroes.”
Bristol has been a trailblazer throughout her journey in Girl Scouts. She has been a Cookie CEO (top five cookie sellers in the council) each year she has been a Girl Scout. Every cookie season, Bristol raises her cookie goal and proves to herself that she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to.
We transitioned from the name “DEIA” to “Belonging and Culture,” a change that signifies our dedication to building a community where everyone can connect, contribute, and feel a genuine sense of belonging.
While we continue to prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, the new name highlights our deeper focus on nurturing a culture that embraces the uniqueness of each individual.
This year, our Camp CEO was honored to welcome Jenna Conklin, LMSW, RBC, IMHE(II), and Brinna Abbott, a Behavioral Clinician from Paladin. Their expertise provided invaluable support to both our mentors and Girl Scouts as they embarked on their transformative growth journey through their mentorship and memorable activities during Camp CEO!
Kelly Philbin has made an incredible impact on our Girl Scout community through her advocacy for people with disabilities, particularly those with neurodiversity. Her journey as an advocate and her passion for creating inclusive spaces stems from personal experience and an understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. She believes in the importance of ensuring that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can thrive and feel valued.
As part of the Inclusion and Accommodation Committee, Kelly is helping our council develop practices and resources to better support all community members. Her insights and experiences have been invaluable in guiding our inclusive efforts. From providing sensory-friendly materials to offering flexible participation options, Kelly’s approach is rooted in understanding and respect for each member’s unique needs.
Kelly had the opportunity to share her experiences and strategies at our Leader KickOff event on August 11 in Schererville. Her participation was a highlight of the event, providing practical advice and inspiration to volunteers and staff.
Staff participated in tours of the Austin and Back of the Yards neighborhoods in Chicago with Shermann “Dilla” Thomas from Mahogany Tours as part of the Healing Illinois Grant. These experiences were not just an educational journey but also a powerful reminder of the rich history and vibrant culture that exists in our communities. Together, we learned about the neighborhood’s deep roots and the resilience of its residents in the face of systemic issues like redlining and discrimination. These truths, though painful, are essential for us to confront as we strive to create a more equitable future for all.
The tours were a wonderful opportunity to connect and honor the stories that continue to shape these communities.
Our staff is actively engaging in the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), a valuable tool designed to assess and enhance our cultural competence. The IDI helps individuals and organizations understand their approach to cultural differences and guides how to grow toward more inclusive and adaptive mindsets.
This initiative was made possible through a Healing Illinois grant which supported our commitment to fostering belonging and cultural understanding within our organization and the communities we engage.
This year, the Belonging and Culture Department collaborated with Loyola University to deliver an impactful anti-bullying presentation aimed at creating safe spaces, in support of a Chicago Girl Scout facing bullying at school.
This year, our Volunteer Inclusion and Accommodation Committee organized a GO GOLD Accommodations training for our Gold Award Committee. Following members receiving the training, the Inclusion and Accommodation Committee provided an opportunity for members to come together, discuss their needs, share language preferences, and explore how individuals can receive support from both the Belonging and Culture Department and the Inclusion and Accommodation Committee.
This year’s Gold Award Girl Scouts are change-makers, role models, and real-life heroes. To earn the Gold Award, Girl Scouts must invest more than 80 hours of leadership, project management, and service to create a sustainable impact in their communities and beyond.
GSGCNWI is delighted to share that 53 Girl Scouts have earned this prestigious award by addressing many pressing issues within their communities, such as mental health, poverty and homelessness, environmental sustainability, and cultural awareness.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we nearly tripled our scholarship fund to $28,000, awarding scholarships to all 10 applicants. Dorothy Lakshmanamurthy from Munster, Indiana, received the top scholarship of $10,000 for her project, “Bringing Munster History Outside.” She created seven trail walk signs to educate the community about Munster’s rich history, as well as a Munster History patch. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our donors for their extraordinary support of our Gold Award Girl Scouts.
