Girls Take Action on Poverty, Environment, Gender “We’re proud to say that we worked together to plan until we couldn’t plan anymore,” said Erin Chant, Girl Scout Ambassador and member of the Girls’ World Forum Girl Planning Team. “We discussed, sometimes we argued, and we worked on it until even the smallest of details was covered.” In March 2011, 18 local teens began work to develop, organize and host the Girls’ World Forum, an event for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from 80 countries and 86 US councils. The delegations spent the week of July 12 - 16 discussing three UN Millennium Development Goals that focused on ending extreme poverty, promoting environmental sustainability and establishing gender equity. Each delegation, made up of two girls and a young adult chaperone, worked together throughout the week to build a “Take Action” plan for their return home. Many of the attendees used this international gathering of to collaborate with young women from other countries and communities so they could take action together.

Delegations performed dances and songs from their native countries, and together they learned about the many different ways people think and communicate across the globe. “Seeing these interactions with girls from all over truly showed me how this international forum is breaking down barriers to reveal the sisterhood enjoyed by Girl Scouts and Girl Guides,” Mandy said.
