Girl Scout Daisies and twin sisters Fallynn McNally and Maesie McNally are part of Girl Scout Troop 94, a troop of homeschoolers. Their leader, Southern Van Auken, says Girl Scouting incorporated with their curriculum allows girls to explore in different directions and gives caregivers the ability to customize activities. It’s a nice way to add academic sparkle to badge and patch work and substitute field trips or opportunities that are based on girls’ interests! Adding Girl Scout programming to curriculum can add soft skills such as critical thinking, confidence building, communications, collaboration and even time management. Troop 94 keeps girls busy with activities and field trips to complement their academic work. They traveled across Hampton Roads to earn their Military Pride patches. From touring Air Power Park in Hampton to enjoying a scavenger hunt at Virginia Beach Surf and Rescue Museum, girls had fun while learning about each branch of our military. They recently worked on the new Maker badges too, where girls learned basics of art and design. Want to learn more about Girl Scouts and homeschooling? Scan this QR code! Girl Scouts—Friendmakers! I really enjoyed being a Girl Scout growing up. I felt like it was a great place to make friends and give service. Not much has changed in that regard for girls today. Girl Scouting continues to play a prominent role in instilling a service-oriented view on life and being a place to make lifelong friends. And it is a tradition that is passed through the generations! All three of my daughters were Girl Scouts. My youngest (who will be graduating this year) and I continue to stay in touch with her Girl Scout Junior leader, Heather and her daughter, who are now on the west coast, just as I continue to stay in touch with my Junior leader.

Tracy Keller Chief Executive Officer

The experiences in Girl Scouting as a girl were eye opening and impactful for me. I volunteered at so many places. It is such an honor to continue being a Girl Scout and giving service. Today, girls and volunteers regularly dedicate time to being changemakers. Whether it is planting trees at a city park or collecting peanut butter for GSCCC’s Spread Kindness program, they are helping the environment and taking action to help others.

I’m proud to say during my girl years in Girl Scouting I earned the Gold Award — the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn, with only 5.6 percent of eligible girls successfully earning the award. It also helped me become the person I am today. When you are young and you learn to help the community, you carry that with you as you get older. Girl Scouts is the reason why I love service and actively try to do my part for the community and have stepped up to leadership within the PTA, Rotary and other groups. While giving service was a big part of my experience, and still is, through Girl Scouting I’ve also gained the confidence to be my own person. Growing up as a Girl Scout, I had opportunities outside of my school and community to broaden my horizons and gain exposure to resources I normally would not have had access to. I made friendships that remain important to me today. And the leadership and management skills I learned in Girl Scouts, especially through the Cookie Program, have stayed with me. I learned invaluable people skills and basic business knowledge. My Girl Scout troop leaders, among them Mrs. Judy Franz who became one of our council’s board presidents, helped me use my voice as a girl which has led to me being a successful woman. I thank Mrs. Franz and other Girl Scout role models who contributed to me finding my way to Girl Scouts, an organization dedicated to girl empowerment and a sisterhood of friends with a common love of giving and making the world a better place. For many caregivers, they choose Girl Scouts as a way to help their child make friends — and it works. The bonus is that they, too, make friends! There’s just no way you find yourself in Girl Scouts without buddies. One of the first songs girls learn as a Girl Scout is “Make New Friends,” and the first activity is the “Friendship Circle.” When you decide to be a Girl Scout, you’ll find yourself surrounded by friends who become sisters. Whatever your big, bold dreams are, your troop or team has your back. Friendships begin at Girl Scouts — lifelong, world-changing friendships. Sincerely,

Tracy Keller Chief Executive Officer, GSCCC

Meet New Board Chair Carolyn Pittman Carolyn first said "yes" to Girl Scouting in 2009, when she registered her daughter, Claire, to become a Girl Scout Daisy in the Girl Scout Council of Northeast Texas. Carolyn became a co-leader for the troop and both she and Claire became rooted in the Movement. They didn’t think twice about keeping the tradition of Girl Scouting going when they moved to Yorktown, Virginia in 2011.

Carolyn Pittman GSCCC Board Chair

“My favorite memory from those early years was the first campfire and sing along, and of course, we made s’mores!” Carolyn said. “The first bridging was also special.”

Carolyn’s interest in Girl Scouts has continued as she has watched her daughter and other girls grow with the program. Her daughter, Claire, earned the Girl Scout Gold Award in 2021! As a gift to her daughter and the Council, Carolyn donated funds for the fountain, Claire’s Dancing Waters, at Camp Skimino.

Community Troop Tackles Board Game Design Challenge Third grade girls at St. Helena Elementary in Norfolk, Virginia are experiencing the amazing benefits of being a Girl Scout thanks to their school's ongoing partnership with Girl Scouts of Colonial Coast's (GSCCC) Community Troop program. No matter what a girl’s circumstances, she can fully participate as a Girl Scout. At a November meeting girls completed final requirements to earn the Board Game Design Challenge badge.

She was appointed as a board member at large in 2015 and has since served on several committees, including the Property, Finance, Philanthropy, Investment and Audit committees. As a board officer, she has served as Treasurer, Vice Chair for two terms, and now serves as the Board Chair. Throughout her volunteerism, Carolyn has maintained a busy professional life. She is a business leader and certified public accountant and has served four large corporations, Northrop Grumman and Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding as chief financial officer, Maxar Technologies as chief accounting officer, and she currently serves on the Board of Directors of Minerals Technologies, Inc.

Carly and Egypt work with Legos to design their gymnastics-themed game.

“I think I’ve really connected to the Girl Scout Cookie Program because of my profession,” Carolyn said. “Teaching our troop the skills to run and enhance the Cookie Program was really fun and rewarding.” Carolyn is excited to help lead GSCCC’s Board of Directors and to continue to grow as a Girl Scout member. “I want to get out there and meet girls and volunteers that make up our Council and get their feedback on what works well and what we can improve.”

Supporting Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast (GSCCC) is a terrific way for corporations and foundations to support girls as they strive to reach their full potential. Our partners make it possible to help girls thrive today—and set the stage for their future success. We want to thank a few of our distinguished community friends who have stepped up to help in recent months. The Elizabeth City Foundation granted GSCCC $3,000 to help the Council support STEM activities for 50 girls through hands-on experiences which will develop their confidence and competence in STEM subjects. The Papa John's Foundation granted GSCCC $5,000 to deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to girls in our Community Troops, and Norfolk Southern’s $15,000 gift will help us maintain and improve safety initiatives within the Council. Many thanks to these funders and for their commitment to our mission — to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place!

Troop News Endangered Animals Girl Scout Juniors from Troop 207 in Virginia Beach wrote a book as part of their Bronze Award. Titled, “Anna’s Endangered Animal Adventure,” the book raises awareness about the plight of endangered animals and aims to teach kids about what they can do to help. The books were sent to several school libraries and to younger Girl Scout troops in their service unit!

Horseshoe Dreams Came True Girl Scout Cadette Lily Daves from Troop 1539 in Newport News planned a special day at Areion Equestrian Horse Farm for underprivileged children to have fun and learn about horses. She used her equestrian love and this educational project, “Horseshoe Dreams,” to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award!

Thirty Stuffies Stitched

Packages for Pets Girl Scout Cadettes Sonya Johnson, Morgan Speller and Hannah Twiddy from Troop 216 in Virginia Beach put together 50 pet adoption kits. They gave 25 to the Hope for Life organization and the other 25 to the Virginia SPCA. Their Silver Award project, "Packages for Pets," will help get many pets off to a good start with their new families!

Homes for Animal Friends Girl Scout Claire Helmick, an individually registered member from Yorktown, took action to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award by helping Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge Project. She used recycled wood to build animal shelters, making three squirrel boxes, an otter box, and a raccoon/ possum box. She also made an educational video about her project and shared it with the refuge and posted it on several social media sites.

6 Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast

Girl Scout Juniors from Troop 482 in Smithfield researched groups that would accept stuffed animals to give to sick or underprivileged children. They found a local food bank, the Christian Outreach Program (COP), and then took action to make 30 “stuffies” for COP to give out!

The Kittens are Thankful Thanks to Girl Scout Cadette Kaitlyn Salway from Troop 152 Virginia Beach, a lot of kittens have a better life. She refurbished a storage space at the Billy the Kidden Rescue by installing new shelving and then organized food, toys and cat necessities. She also made 25 cat toys. To complete her Girl Scout Silver Award project, “You Can’t Buy Love, But You Can Rescue It,” she created a scrapbook about the center that is being shown to visitors and prospective volunteers.

Bats Don’t Deserve a Bad Rap

(L to R) Girl Scout Cadettes Olivia Glomski and Adrianna Moore Girl Scout Cadettes Adrianna Moore and Olivia Glomski from Troop 216 in Virginia Beach learned a lot about bats through their Girl Scout Silver Award project, “The Bat Project.” After researching and learning about bat habitats, they learned how to use power tools, purchased materials, and built several bat boxes that they donated to an area state park.

A Lot of Trees Planted

(Left) Urban Forestry Coordinator Lora Johnson from VDF, and Ana Elezovic, Chesapeake Park and Facility Planning Administrator, were in attendance to thank Girl Scouts. This program continues through 2024. Nearly 50 trees were planted by GSCCC Girl Scouts at Chesapeake’s Camelot Park as part of the Girl Scouts Tree Promise, a national Girl Scout pledge to plant 5 million trees to support wildlife conservation and ease the negative effects of climate change.

Busy Changemakers

Girl Scouts from Troop 396 at the Chalet in Switzerland

Girl Scout Cadettes from Troop 396

Girl Scout members from Troop 396, a multi-level troop in Norfolk, have been busy! Teens from the troop traveled abroad to see two World Centers, PAX Lodge in London and the Chalet in Switzerland. They also visited the Eiffel Tower in Paris! Several of the troop’s Cadettes restored Lake Taylor Elementary’s Butterfly Garden as a Girl Scout Silver Award project. They planted flowers to attract pollinators in the flower boxes they made. The finishing touch was adding an inspiring sign they handmade! Girl Scout Zoe Redel, also a Cadette working to earn the Silver Award, created a seed library for the Mary Pretlow Library. She ordered and sorted seed packets and then placed them in a decorated container she created. The troop’s Girl Scout Juniors revitalized five street signs and landscaped the nearby area as part of their Girl Scout Bronze project, “Enhancing our Neighborhood and Being Good Neighbors.”

Troop News Meet a Female Mentor from History

Fun with the Kappa Deltas

Girl Scout Cadette Cristalena Arbogast, an individually registered member from Chesapeake, used her technology skills to develop a special app as part of her Silver Award project, “Famous Women App.” She coded an app to help others learn about outstanding women in STEM, both well known and unknown. This app gives information about who each woman is, what she did, and what field she is in. It also has quotes by the different women!

Women in Aviation Event

Girl Scout Daisy Ellie Williams from Troop 394 in Virginia Beach dressed as a baker, with three Kappa Delta members. Kappa Delta Sorority members from Old Dominion University hosted a costume fun run for Girl Scouts on November 11. Along with a fun run and campus tour, the Sorority sisters also offered various activities and crafts, shared some healthy living tips and did some invigorating exercises with the girls! Girl Scout Junior Brooklynn Mariani, Troop 600 from Virginia Beach Girl Scouts had fun at the Women in Aviation event. From meeting uniformed women in the Air Force who demonstrated some of their work on aircrafts, to meeting a rocket engineer and members from the Ninety Nines, a nonprofit that was started in 1929 for women in aviation, they had some amazing experiences with women mentors. Learn more about aviation with GSCCC’s Discovering Flight patch.

Star Club Views Enormous Sun Spot GSCCC Star Club members joined Back Bay Astronomers to view the sun on Saturday, Oct. 21, at Elizabeth River Park. An enormous sunspot made its way across the solar disc and was big enough to be seen by the “naked eye” with appropriate protection. The spot was possibly the biggest one to appear yet in the current solar cycle!

Well Done, Troop 256

Get Involved — Civic Action in Girl Scouts Girl Scout Democracy badges lay the groundwork for girls to understand both local and national government, what they are responsible for, and how they make large-scale changes throughout the country. The badges also require them to explore political issues that interest them, draft legislation, and debate with their friends and family! Visit the Volunteer Toolkit for these badges and others that are part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience!

Girl Scout Troop 256 from Norfolk did the honors of presenting the colors and helping open the 2023 Virginia Women’s Conference, an annual event hosted by Senator Warner. Sergeant Rachael Colman, US Air Force Heritage of America Band, joined the girls on stage to perform the national anthem. Many thanks to Gold Award Girl Scout alum Ashlee Warren, an alum from the Virginia Skyline Girl Scouts who is now the Special Projects Director on Senator Mark Warner’s team, for inviting GSCCC to take part in this event.

Cheering for Our Veterans Note: Girl Scout members may not take action on legislation or participate in any political activity that supports or opposes a candidate for public office, in their capacities as Girl Scouts. Such activities as conducting a flag ceremony at a political rally or appearing in an advertisement for a political candidate — where the person is clearly being identified as a Girl Scout — are prohibited. Troops may hold activities designed to be informative and do not advocate one position over another.

Girl Scout Troop 223 from Virginia Beach were among the many troops that marched in the Veterans Day Parade in Virginia Beach.

Girl Scouts Learn Flag Etiquette GSCCC Program Specialist Donna Farnham led Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies and Juniors in a special workshop to learn how to conduct a flag ceremony. Girl Scouts learned about the history of the flag, proper flag etiquette, including how to fold a flag, and practiced doing an indoor flag ceremony. Participants also had an opportunity to design their own personal flag based on their hobbies and interests!

1. Lay your cardboard on top of your brown poster and measure the cardboard so that it’s 1 inch smaller than the poster on all sides. Use scissors to cut the cardboard to size. Tape the cardboard down to the poster. 2. Use a marker to make a vertical dashed line down the middle of the cardboard and another horizontal dashed line through the middle. This will create the graham cracker. 3. Flip the poster over so that the cardboard faces down. Take your stuffing and bunch it around all the sides of the poster board so that it peeks out on the other side. Use wide tape to tape it down. 4. Repeat steps 1-3 to make the back of the costume. Then, take two pieces of ribbon and tape them to the tops of the two boards, attaching them to make shoulder straps. To make a group S’mores costume, you could instead make three different costumesone chocolate bar, one graham cracker, and one marshmallow. Put them all together and you’ve got one delicious costume combination! 13 Winter/Spring

Each March, during the week of Girl Scouts’ birthday, faith partners join us to help girls celebrate the connections between their faith and Girl Scouts. Celebration days include Girl Scout Sunday, Girl Scout Jummah and Girl Scout Sabbath. Some ways that faith partners can work with Girl Scouts include hosting a troop, engaging Girl Scouts in service opportunities, and helping girls earn their My Promise, My Faith pin and religious recognitions. They also can use our celebration inserts and bulletin covers for their services! These can be found on the Marketing page of our website. Girl Scouts encourages girls to take spiritual journeys via their faiths' religious recognitions. Find more details and resources at www.praypub.org/gsusa 14 Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast

Safe Spaces by Elizabeth Vaughn Girl Scouts was always a safe space for me growing up. Safe spaces for girls are getting harder and harder to find and it’s something that as a mom of a Daisy, I am determined to find for my daughter. The world is scary and it’s full of expectations and pressures that can cause women of any age to shrink themselves, mentally and physically, into something that’s not authentically who they are. I want my daughter to get the opportunity to figure out who she is and how she’s going to contribute to the world, in an environment that lets her learn and grow and fail and succeed. That’s why we’re participating in Girl Scouts. I decided early on that I wanted to help create this opportunity for my daughter and for other girls so I volunteered to be a troop leader (volunteering and leading — something I learned in Girl Scouts!). Preparing to be a new troop leader is no joke. There’s a lot to learn and I feel a ton of pressure to get it "right." I want these girls to have the great experience that I had, to build those lifelong friendships and to make a difference in their community. In thinking about how I might accomplish these monumental tasks, I was reminded of what I loved so much about my troop leaders. They truly let our experience be whatever we as Elizabeth Vaughn, an active Girl Scout alum Girl Scouts wanted it to be. They exposed us to new opportunities and and volunteer, is the Deputy Director of the challenged us to try new things but at the end of the day, it was our choice. Public Communications Department in the And that’s the cool thing about Girl Scouts. It is what you make of it and it’s City of Chesapeake. designed to be girl-led. All So I’m aiming to be the kind of troop leader that I had some 20+ Places years ago by providing a safe space for girls to be whoever they Should Be Safe are at the moment and to try new things, without fear of having Spaces. to be perfect at any of it.

I’m excited to see what my daughter makes of this organization since the experience really can be different for each girl. Will she be the outspoken leader or the quiet support? The adventure seeker on the rock wall or the reserved caretaker coordinating a food drive? I feel comfortable knowing that it will be her choice and that all I have to do is provide that safe space through Girl Scouts so these little Daisies can grow.

Girl Scout Mental Wellness Program This year, be sure to check out three new mental wellness patches that are being made available to Girl Scouts as part of GSUSA’s Mental Health Initiative. Each patch program includes an adult facilitator guide to help troop leaders approach girls in a sensitive way, prompt important conversations and help them through difficult moments. Program materials contain meeting aids, parent/caregiver resources, teaser activities and marketing tools to give troop leaders and council staff support and activities focused on mental wellness, behavioral issues and healthy habits. The public can access the resources in the Girl Scout Activity Zone, where people can explore and download free wellness curriculum and activities.

New Mental Health Badges Include: Knowing My Emotions (Girl Scout Juniors, grades 4-5) This program teaches Girl Scout Juniors positive coping skills and how to name their feelings.

Finding My Voice (Girl Scout Cadettes, grades 6-8) Girl Scout Cadettes learn about stigma, helping friends, how to be mindful on social media and how to practice self-care.

Showing Up for Me and You (Girl Scout Seniors/Ambassadors, grades 9-12) This program gives Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors ideas for practicing selfcare and coping mechanisms for managing difficult situations for themselves and others.

Troops Had a Blast at Darden! Several troops enjoyed a weekend at Camp Darden as winning troops in the membership renewal contest drawing. All troops who met certain renewal guidelines were entered to win a free encampment for the whole troop, including meals and activities! Throughout the weekend, several troops participated in some of our favorite camp activities while making lots of memories with other Girl Scouts. From a campfire program and a pumpkin craft to activities that included axe throwing and rock wall climbing, girls had an amazing time to celebrate the new membership year and the glories of the fall season.

Your troop could win in 2024! Start thinking about a First Day patch design soon. The theme is:

Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast brought the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to more than 7,000 girls throughout southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina in the 2022-23 membership year. This couldn’t have happened without our dedicated volunteers in the 23 service unit areas that make up our jurisdiction. Our membership delivery includes special social impact programs that open the doors of access and opportunity for all disenfranchised girls and their families. Delivered by both volunteers and staff, these programs welcome and serve girls in such locations as Boys and Girls Clubs, ForKids, and a number of Title 1 schools. We know the power of Girl Scouting: when girls are given the opportunity, they will change the world. We have a responsibility to provide safe and nurturing spaces for all girls and empower them to build courage, confidence and character to make the world a better place.

Volunteer Generated One thing that all great Girl Scout memories have in common? They were made possible by the efforts of volunteers. Nearly 3,000 volunteers worked diligently as troop leaders and behind the scenes to support every need of our Girl Scout community. The value of their service is immeasurable! They helped build the change-makers, trailblazers, and explorers—the girls that learn all the potential they have inside of them from the encouragement of leaders around them—our volunteers. We know we’re not alone when we say we love our volunteers. When asked about their troop leaders, 86% of Girl Scouts said their leader makes them feel important and 94% of parents/caregivers say their Girl Scout’s leader made their family feel like part of a community. GSCCC thanked volunteers in many ways during the membership year, including hosting Shine Bright, our adult awards celebration where adults received both national and council awards to recognize their achievements.
