The weather this week has been a bit drastic hasn’t it? The biggest water-spout ever recorded was seen off the coast of Valencia and June & Bob Smith were seen riding lilos down Calle Gerona in Benidorm.

Joking aside it’s been a bit awful again, it’s always pleasant to see some rain here but we don’t want that much do we! On a positive the cars were cleaned of the dirty rain a week previously.

Thoughts and prayers this week go out to the families of the Brazilian football team, Chapecoense, after Colombian media release audio of pilot telling air traffic controllers that plane which crashed killing 71 players, crew and journalists was without fuel. Such a tragedy, and to happen in this day and age is even more frightening.

Jack or ‘JT’ as he is known at #RTNHQ has once again done his best to keep us up to date with all that’s happening with Brexit, Prime Minister Theresa May said on Wednesday expats in Europe would be left “high and dry” if the UK had immediately guaranteed the rights of EU citizens in Great Britain! Read that on page 7.

Today marks the second day of December and thankfully Fred the Elf was delivered to my house, thats another 23 days of the kids being good, or so we hope, maybe we could invent something for the other 342 days? Hope you enjoy the read....

Catwalk success for APSA

APSA STAGED its annual Fashion Show at Maloans in Albox and raised 2,500 for the animal charity – the money will support the dogs, new kennels, a neutering programme and vets’ bills.

BY JACK TROUGHTON THE S STAFF members at Maloans were excellent hosts providing a lit catwalk and stage for the models and cava for the audience.

Organiser Sue Buckley worked hard to fi t the models with outfi ts and there was a selection of other new and nearly-new clothes on sale.

Marilyn Shipley’s singing was enjoyed by all and MC Frank did a superb job running the auction - encouraging the audience to bid for the lovely outfits.

Guests enjoyed a great time and the Animal Protection Society Albox thanks everyone who attended and the models who took part – especially Olga who stood in at the last minute – and everyone who donated clothes and prizes for tombola and the raffle.

The next event, also at Maloans, is the Friday Night Fever Christmas Disco on 9th December.

December services THE ANGLICAN Churches of Costa Almeria are holding a number of festive services through December to Christmas Day. The diary includes Mojacar: on Monday 5th December a joint Carols and Lessons Service at the church in Mojacar Pueblo at 8pm; on Saturday 17th December at 11am, a Carol Service at the Parque Commercial; and on Sunday 25th December at 11am, Holy Eucharist at St. Pascual Church.

In Aljambra, there is a Carol Service at the Aljambra Chapel at 6pm on Sunday 18th December but no service on Thursday 29th December.

And in Llanos Del Peral: Sunday 4th December, Pray and Praise at 11am includes crib service; Monday 19th December, Carols by Candlelight at 6pm, followed by mince pies & mulled wine; and Sunday 25th December, Pray & Praise at 11am.

The rain in Spain Unusual weather hit the Valencian coastline this week causing considerable damage to agriculture and included the biggest water spout in over a decade. by james martin The weather was so bad one women had to be rescued from the roof of her car on Monday after her vehicle came close to being submerged at a flooded underpass in the town of Sagunto, Valencia.

It ‘s said the motorist had attempted to drive through

what seemed to be a puddle, unfortunately it turned out to be a flooded underpass which had been fenced off an hour before. A television crew captured her plight, and images of a woman standing atop a gently floating red hatchback quickly spread on social media.

On Sunday a tornado-like waterspout was captured on video off the Spanish coast and was best seen from the towns of Sueca, Cullera, Mareny de Barraquetes and El

Perello, where hundreds of people gathered and quickly shared the videos and photos to social media. “There are many reports of waterspouts, but it would be hard to find another one with such an imposing structure as Sunday’s,” said Aemet.

Much of the Valencia region had been put on a weekend alert for heavy rains with wild weather affecting road and rail links. Traiguera, in Castellón province, registered 81.4 liters of rainfall per square meter on Saturday.

Former Atlético player among victims of air crash Cléber Santana, a former player for Spanish La Liga side Atlético de Madrid, was among the passengers aboard the airplane that crashed in Colombia on Monday night.

At 35, Santana was captain of a modest Brazilian team that was about to play the biggest game in its history.

The Chapecoense squad was flying to Colombia to play the first match of the Copa Sudamericana final on Wednesday, against Medellín’s Atlético Nacional when the plane crashed in a mountainous area reportedly due to a lack of fuel. Columbian authorities say 71 of the 77 passengers aboard the aircraft that crashed on Monday night in Colombia died.

“Cléber was a very shy, religious young man. He was always walking around with rosaries. He learned Spanish really fast,” recalls a former Atlético Madrid employee.

Santana used to arrive early for training at the pitch in Cerro del Espino, in the Madrid suburb of Majahadonda, and liked to have breakfast at a nearby Argentinean bakery every morning. A minutes silence was held around all UK football games in midweek as a mark of respect.

Tax ‘iceberg’ warning weho got caught out.”

by JACK TROUGHTON EXPATS ARE being warned about an ‘iceberg’ ahead over income tax due to the taxman in Spain – even if they have continued to pay the revenue in their home countries.

Bill Daysh MBE has enjoyed life in Spain for 10 years but continued to pay taxes in the UK as advised by a Spanish ‘gestor’. However, he was blissfully unaware of a change in the law...until a red letter day.

And after taking professional advice when he first arrived to a new life in the sun, he believed taxes on his pensions would still be paid to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

However, back in 2012 Spain and the UK – along with many other European Countries – entered a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA); aimed at insuring people living or working abroad did not pay the same taxes twice.

The legislation also underlined that Tax should no longer be paid ‘at home’ but instead, to the countries where they reside long term.

“Like the skipper of the Titanic must have been, I was shocked to run into what I will call a nasty ‘iceberg’ I did not know existed in the Spanish tax system,” said the former Royal Navy officer.

“I am no tax expert but I simply want to warn people that they too could be, unknowingly, in breach of Spanish tax laws.”

Bill has now been hit with demands for back tax – despite having continued to pay HMRC – and punitive fines. Without a deal being struck over the fines and the British taxman refunds payments, the debt could be as high as 40,000€.

“I have got a very good ‘gestor’ who is trying to sort it out but at the moment the authorities are being vey bloody about it,” he told RTN. “But he said he couldn’t begin to tell me just how many people have been caught out; he is dealing with expats all the time.

“I don’t even mind paying my taxes here – I live here.

LAW ABIDING He said his “blood boiled” because he did not believe he did anything wrong and as a “law abiding citizen” continued to pay his taxes in the UK. He said he went wrong – despite knowing of the new DTA from media reports – but too easily believed it belonged to wealthy people with assets across the world after being given assurance from a professional when he first arrived.

Bill said his address on the Costa Blanca was always registered and up to date with HMRC. However, because he has always lived in rented accommodation in Spain, when he moved – leaving an empty home behind – his correspondence never caught up.

“However, it now transpires that in 2012, the local tax office began to send letters to me on the subject but, alas, by delivering them to an empty house – and in spite of always being on the Padron – we never received them,” he said.

“Had I known about DTA in 2012, this problem would have seemed more like an ice cube, not the iceberg it has become now.”

including the supply of his up-to-date address, Bill received his wake up call – in Spanish – in the form of a six page letter with its “brutal” demands.

He hopes to save others “heartache” and from creating their own Spanish tax iceberg and advises taking proper advice before it is

too late. Bill, who stressed he believed he was paying all income tax owing, added: “If you now live in Spain and receive income either in your own country or your own homeland, please get proper qualified advice right now on the state of your ‘fiscal residency’ and do not ‘brush it under the carpet’.

“Spain and most European countries apparently now have this DTA agreement and, with it, a software system that automatically swaps information between tax offices on personal addresses; assets; pensions; businesses; other income; social security information; and even tax returns.”

Poster art competition INFLUENCE THE 2017 ‘Moors and Christians’ celebrations in Almeria by designing a poster for next year’s traditional fi esta.

BY JACK TROUGHTON THE TOURISM Department at Mojacar Town Hall is challenging people to have a go and artists can enter three ideas – but they must be original and unpublished pieces of work.

The theme is simple – to represent any aspect of the traditional festival the artist thinks is appropriate. However, the following Spanish text must be incorporated in some part of the poster: ‘MOROS Y CRISTIANOS DE MOJÁCAR 2017. Del 9 al 11 de Junio’.

Entries can be produced in any artistic form, provided that they can be easily reproduced in a four-colour process. The poster itself should be made to a 50cm x 70cm size - without any margin - and be in portrait orientation.

And the works, which must not be signed, should be delivered on a CD containing the poster in PDF and JPG in RGB format or, directly in the original format, either on paper or canvas.

Posters should be accompanied by a sealed envelope containing the author’s name and address, DNI, NIE or ID, phone contact numbers, e-mail address and a photograph of the work.

Entries can be mailed to the Mojácar Pueblo Tourist Offi ce in the Plaza del Frontón or delivered personally any morning or evening except Sunday and fi estas.

The deadline for submission is 7pm on December 15th and the winner will receive a 300€ prize.

Enjoy some animal magic SUPPORTERS OF animal charity PAWS-PATAS will enjoy a fun event in Mojacar on Wednesday 7th December with a chance to go behind the scenes.

The charity welcomes volunteers visiting Almeria from across Europe and staying at the shelter in caravans; their experiences being both enlightening and interesting.

BY JACK TROUGHTON RESIDENTS OF Mojacar are invited to join a trip to the spa at Zujar in Granada on Friday 9th December – popular hot springs used by the Romans.

The Balneario de Zujar visit has been organised by the Sports Department at the town hall and must be booked before 5th December, and costs 21€.

The spa has waters emanating from the Cerro del Jabolan and is surrounded by a nature reserve – a unique location to enjoy a moment of healthy relaxation.

And the ticket price includes a coach, lunch, entrance to the spa and a relaxation session. People signing up for the visit only have to remember their swimming costumes, a bathing cap, a towel and suitable waterproof footwear such as fl ip fl ops.

Expats left ‘high and dry’ PRIME MINISTER Theresa May said on Wednesday expats in Europe would be left “high and dry” if the UK had immediately guaranteed the rights of EU citizens in Great Britain.

by Jack Troughton The latest spat over people being used as “bargaining chips” in Brexit negotiations comes after European Union Council President Donald Tusk said there could be no reciprocal deals between individual countries.

The British Premier has held a series of talks with leaders across Europe following the referendum over the standing of EU expats in the UK and Britons living in Europe.

The message appeared to be – and underlined at local levels in Spain as reported in RTN – that if individual countries agreed, a status quo would be negotiated.

However, Mr Tusk has hit out in response to accusations the EU was “standing in the way” of a deal and said there could be no “reciprocal” deals over expats until formal talks begin; negotiations still timetabled for March next year.

Mrs May said the remarks showed it was “absolutely right” for the UK not to have acted immediately and unilaterally – although it was also ”right” to reassure both sets of citizens.

She said in response to a House of Commons question: “But I think that the reaction that we have seen shows why it was absolutely right for us not to do what the Labour Party wanted us to do; which was simply to give away the guarantees to rights of EU citizens here in the UK, because as we have seen that would have left UK citizens in Europe high and dry.”

A block of 81 MPs and peers believe the EU is holding up a deal on expats and said the European Commission appeared to be “worryingly indifferent” to the worries of all expats.

They underlined in a letter to Europe calling for the matter to be urgently moved forward that people were not bargaining

chips. “Human beings are not cards to be traded ‘tit for tat’ in a political playground.”

In response, Mr Tusk said it was the vote for Brexit and not the EU that created “anxiety and uncertainty” – and the best way to dispel “fears and doubts” of people was to trigger Article 50, the formal begin-

ning of two-years of exit negotiations.

Government ministers continue to argue guarantees to EU citizens in the UK can only be made as part of a deal protecting the rights of Britons abroad – despite senior Lords claiming it would be the right thing to do and “morally” the EU would be forced to match the offer.

Philip applies some science YEAR 11 student Philip Mackie has created a school App to keep parents and pupils up to date with what is happening at the Laude Lady Elizabeth School.

by Jack Troughton The teenager has been congratulated for his initiative after developing the project in his spare time and the App is available to download from the Apple App Store.

And with a keen interest in technology, Philip plans to create an App for Android phones once he has learnt more about Java, the programming language.

His App gives everyone constant and easy access to information such as school news, bus times and routes; all at the touch of a button – all important to parents, especially if there is a change to normal routines.

Headmaster, Mr Richard Wijeratne said: “I am delighted at the success of Philip´s project and congratulate him on his achievement. He has shown real energy and determination to get this App launched and I hope many of our parents will support him by downloading and using this useful tool.

“Philip is a classic example of the way we totally support students as individuals. We encourage them all to fulfil their dreams and goals in everything they do. Really well done Philip.”

Lone wolf ISIS terrorist arrested Police believe the man planned to recruit people to help him carry out attacks in Spain.

by James martin Spanish police this week arrested a man they suspected of being a “lone wolf” terrorist who was preparing to carry out acts of terrorism.

The man, who is of Moroccan origin, was arrested in the town of Aranjuez. He had become radicalized in recent months, modeling himself on the four terrorists who killed themselves in Madrid after they carried out the terror attacked of 2004, police said in a statement.

The arrest came after three other similar operations in recent days, including the arrests of four suspects with possible links to the Paris terror attacks last year. Spain is still at terror alert level four – the second-highest level – since the jihadist attacks against French magazine Charlie Hebdo in January 2014. It is thought up to 450 Spanish residents have travelled to Syria and other places of terrorist backgrounds in the last 2 years to join ISIS.

Three arrested over illegal womb-for-rent arrangement A Gay couple have been accused of paying a woman from Cadiz €10,000 to have a baby for them.

The Guardia Civil says it was alerted after the woman told social workers in the small community of Villamartín (Cadiz province) that the baby had died during birth and the body had been donated to science.

Award for fight against domestic violence PROUD LOCAL police officers in Almeria have won a special award in recognition of pioneering work to help protect victims of gender violence.

by Jack Troughton The Mojacar force was presented with a trophy by the Government of Andalucia at a Seville ceremony – the annual ‘Menina Awards’ are aimed at recognising and supporting organisations, associations, institutions and residents in the battle against such crimes.

Since 2007, police officers in Mojácar have been working continuously towards ‘VioGén’; a comprehensive monitoring system in cases of gender violence. The force has been among the pioneers using a state system give protection to the victims of this serious social problem.

And from 2007 and 2013, the Guardia Civil and Local Police of Mojácar carried out this task together. However, the local police later managed the protection of victims themselves, becoming the only municipality in Andalucia take on this single-handed approach.

The prize was collected on behalf of the Mojácar’s Local Police by Gabriel Ruiz Ayala, Head of the Gender Violence Unit, accompanied by three other officers from the Unit.

It was the fourth ceremony for awarding the distinctive statuettes - which are in the image

of the ‘Girl from Velázquez’ - was attended by a number of elected Government officials responsible for the police teams that specialise in the fight against gender violence.

Also present were numerous bodies linked to the defence prevention of gender violence, and the support, assistance and protection of victims in Andalucia.

Airlift to safety A RIDER was evacuated by helicopter from a remote area of Javea after falling from his horse on Tuesday.

The British visitor was staying in neighbouring Benitachell for a few days when he hired a horse from a riding school to explore the Granadella area.

However, after the fall an ambulance was unable to reach the man and the emergency services, including Local Police and the Guardia Civil, worked together to reach the stricken rider and move him to a place where the chopper could land.

The injured man was said to be stable in hospital but complained of severe pains to his hip and collarbone as a result of the fall.

JIBC comes of age JAVEA INTERNATIONAL Baptist Church celebrated its 21st anniversary last Saturday with a party at the Cumbre Restaurant, Cumbre del Sol.

by Jack Troughton The church was inaugurated on 5th December 1995 when a congregation of 11 was led by founding Pastor, Tim Shupp, from Texas, his wife Louise and their three children.

And Barbara Watts, one of the original members, remembers how a curtain was drawn across Pedro’s Restaurant to separate them from customers. As the Sunday Service drew to an end, the congregation was tantalised by the delicious aromas from the kitchen!

Over the years JIBC has had many homes including Xabia International College’s Primary and Senior School halls, the Grande Cafe Toscamar, Restaurante Amanacer on Cabo de la San Antonia, and Javea Players Studio Theatre. It now meets at The Church Centre in Javea Old Town.

Pastor Phillip Laver, who was at the helm from 1999 to 2004, successfully registered JIBC as an English-speaking Church in Spain and over the years it has grown steadily and is now affiliated to the East Midlands Baptist Union in the UK. It is also a Baptists Mission Church and supports Christian Missions in Spain, the UK, Iran and Africa. It has close links to the Spanish

Baptist Church in Javea and also supports its Harvest Store which strives to help those in need.

Current Pastor Steve Hall welcomed everyone to the celebration and said the “strong foundations of the early life of the church” could still be seen and JIBC continued to have a positive influence in the community on a daily basis.

After enjoying a meal and tucking into a special anniversary cake made by Lynn Capon – cutting the cake is pictured - the party was treated to some special entertainment; 12-year-old Rosanna Post sang a solo, Jen Ward performed a comedy sketch ‘Cheap Flights’, and Claire Harkness-Post sang a melody of songs.

JIBC continues to be an English-speaking church and its congregation is made up of people from many backgrounds. While its members are mainly from the UK, it is a truly international church welcoming people from Holland, Spain, America, the Caribbean, Ireland, Germany, Hungary, Moldova, Burma, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and India.

Rascals will be in San Luis Square tomorrow (3rd December) at 2pm; Montesinos Square on Sunday (4th December) at 1pm; Carmen’s Bar on Tuesday 6th December at 3pm; and Punta Prima at 11am on Saturday 10th December.

Festive success THE AGE Concern Christmas Fair attracted a large crowd to the charity’s centre in La Siesta raised more than 2,864€.

President Maureen Payne thanked all the team of volunteers and helpers for their part in making the event “a huge success”, and congratulated all who made cakes and savouries, handicrafts and donated prizes for playing their part in a special day.

Corona story goes flat SURPRISE NEWS that everyone in a sleepy Spanish village was to receive a windfall from the Corona beer billionaire shook up the world but has now fallen flat.

Antonio Fernandez – the 99-year-old tycoon behind the Mexican brand – was reported to have left 200 million Euros to the 80-strong community of Cerezales del Condando in north-west Spain in his will; making them all millionaires.

The story got international media in a froth...but the information is simply not correct according to the Foundacion Cerelales Antonio y Cinia; who said the tale had grown completely out of hand.

The brewer migrated to Mexico in 1949 with his wife Cinia to work for her uncle founder of Grupo Modelo – makers of the internationally renowned beer.

He started in the warehouse but rose through the ranks to run the company and make a fortune; Corona is the biggest selling imported beer in the United Sates and the company has a 63% stake in Mexico’s beer market.

The 11th of 13 children, he had no children of his own and channelled money through nephews and nieces to help his home village, supporting churches and a cultural centre.

The foundation spokesman said family members would spend money back in Cerelales, “but villagers won’t be sharing in the inheritance directly.”

With the tale of good fortune watered down, life has returned to normal in the village – members of the community anticipating the Christmas lottery ‘El Gordo’ as a real chance of a windfall.

Legion goes through change Supporting the

IT WAS all change at the Annual General Samaritans Meeting of Orihuela Costa and District Branch of the Royal British Legion.

RESTAURANTE EL Alto La Dolores raised 965€ for Samaritans in Spain at a special fund-raising night helping support the charity in its community work across Spain.

Alan Chew, from El Raso, enjoyed his evening, winning the star prize; a cruise donated by the restaurant’s owners.

And Alan is pictured with Berna, one of the owners, and Lynda Brettle and Glenys Palmer from the Samaritans.

A special Christmas Party has been organised for Wednesday 14th December in aid of the Children’s Care Home in Elche – with entertainment provided by the talented Paula B. Tickets are 15€, which includes a three-course meal. They are available from Restaurante El Alto La Dolores; The Card Place in Benimar; The Post Room Benijofar; and REDZ Cafe Bar in Quesada.

With the Poppy Appeal over for another year, the branch – which raised over 35,500€ in 2015 - is currently finalising this year’s totals. However Poppy Appeal Coordinator Eddie Coleman said it has been another bumper year.

Get back the money lost buying property off plan in Spain; new success at the Supreme Court and against ‘Huma Mediterraneo’ IN TODAY’S article, we want to continue reporting on those people who recovered money lost buying properties off plan, where homes were never built because the developer went into liquidation, no licenses were obtained, or other problems.

The Spanish courts, now practically without exception, recognize the responsibility of the banks and an obligation to pay back the money paid by the buyers under the Law 57/68, even though no individual bank guarantees was issued in favor of these buyers.

Firstly, when the bank received money from buyers into its accounts; without making sure it was secured by a bank guarantee or insurance policy, as required by Law 57/68.

In this sense, there are already numerous court decisions from the Spanish Supreme Court; from which we highlight rulings of 16/1/2015; court decision number 733/2015; decision number 142/2016 issued against CaixaBank; decision number 174/2016, issued against BANKIA. Secondly, likewise and repeatedly, the Supreme Court has pointed out that those banks or insurers that have a general policy; what is known as a general bank guarantee line and guaranteeing a complex, are responsible for returning the money paid by the buyers, even if they have not issued an individual guarantee or policy in the name of such purchasers.

This has been stated by Supreme Court in the judgments

number 153/2016, decision dated 9/21/2016, and more recently the court order number 626/2016.

HUMA MEDITERRANEO. This good news continues for those affected in the complex of the Almanzora Country Club promoted by Huma Mediterraneo, to whom this law firm has represented in court, and recently we have obtained the following judicial decisions: Court order 77/2016 of the Court of First Instance number 4 of Totana, condemning the Bank to return to Mr. and Mrs. F, the amount paid of 98,012€, plus legal interest from the time when they paid the money.

Court Order 109/2016 of the Court of First Instance number 4 of Totana, condemning the same bank, to pay Mr. W., 89,519.62€, plus interest from the day of payment, and legal and court costs.

And in the court process 230/2015 at the same court, we have recently obtained and transferred to our clients, Mr. and Mrs. L all the money paid by the them (80,250€) and the court costs (11,998.47€) - and we are in the process of also getting the interest due, which amounts to 38,011.36€.

Has Brexit started the ball rolling?

AFTER THE U.K. Referendum and the U.S. elections the spotlight now turns to Europe.

With the Italian elections imminent and the French, German and Dutch all going to the polls early next year, all indications are showing a swing to right wing parties, not so good for the European dream (as the political elite would call it).

This would inevitably spell trouble in the Banking sector, many have still to repair their balance sheets in the aftermath of the Banking crisis of 2008, even global giants such as Deutsche Bank have issues let alone some of the smaller ones and Italian Banks in particular are in a parlous state.

For those fortunate enough to be holding substantial sums on Deposit with these institutions it is worth remembering that your savings are “ring fenced” up to 100,000 euros or £75,000. Notwithstanding the fact that in the event of any collapse the time period to recover the funds is unclear, in Cyprus for instance customers are still waiting for full reimbursement of their funds from the Cypriot crisis of 2012-2013. Will such an event occur in Europe? Probably not, although it cannot be ruled out, for consumers therefore whilst their money is guaranteed the potential time to recover those funds could be worrying to say the least.

Moving on, I have recently become aware of the fact that many ex-pats here are under the misconception that Spanish Tax Compliant Investment Bonds must be Euro denominated.

That is not the case, Investments can be in Sterling and several other currencies, so for those who are concerned about the exchange rate they can rest easier in the knowledge that an investment in such a Bond does not entail the necessity of a foreign exchange transaction.

Whilst on the subject of exchange rates and purely my own views, I would expect preelection “jitters” over the coming months to

benefit Sterling and would be looking to see over 1.20 and potentially a fair bit higher.

On a lighter note, my Golf seems to be improving, just as well as the cost of replacing

lost balls was becoming expensive!

Gordon’s festive swan song

by JACK TROUGHTON THE GROUND-breaking challenge for the group is to sing more than the traditional carols the audience has enjoyed for a decade.

The programme includes two short works as well as some carols by Montgo Chorale; together with the well-known favourites where everyone will be invited to join in singing.

And the pair of new pieces is new to the choir – and likely to be new to the majority of the audience – and both are penned by English composers.

The concert in the fisherman’s Church will open with George Malcolm’s ‘Mass at the Crib’ - a comparatively unknown mass but beautifully written; short, unassuming

and melodic.

Malcolm held the post of organist and choir director in Westminster Cathedral for many years. He was betterknown as a harpsichordist than a composer.

The second piece is Vaughan Williams’ ‘Fantasia on Christmas Carols’, an early work in which he cleverly blends his love of traditional English folk music with traditional carols.

And the baritone soloist in this work is John Edwards who sang as one of Montgo Chorale’s soloists five years ago.

The concert starts at 4.30pm and the choir hopes the audience will enjoy a new style programme. Entrance is free but donations will be collected as people leave support the work of Caritas locally.

 Mercury offers to open channels of communication this week, since through no fault of yours, there is a current breakdown. Right at the beginning of the week a conjunction with Mars makes things a lot more complex than it needs to be. If nobody will listen then silence may just be the right action to take, but here and now something needs to be said.

A double action with Venus may just see you going back to a past action to get resolve and transparency; which is what you need right now. Both Saturn and Neptune should inspire your current way of thinking, influencing both future plans and finances, both which are open to discussion and need to be taken seriously if any benefit is to come your way.

The midweek sextile between Mercury and Uranus heralds new enterprise, and you should have no fear in putting your best foot forward ; even though you haven’t made absolutely binding decisions. Keeping things open right now allows you to make the subtle choices that are vital, both to you and to the success of the project now in hand.

The entry of Mercury at the end of the week makes a huge difference to your workload and to how you currently are feeling about things in general. A refreshing and vital input from the planet of Communication lifts your anxietiesand urges you to import your skills and brush away any doubts that you seem to have accumulated on the way!

Parents do die, but I can imagine this has phased you, especially as we are only in June.

The body ages and we know that it gets tired and dies one day. Meanwhile we have gifts to give, people to help and love to shower on those we really care for. Really care for yourself right now, and you will turn this current feeling around to enable you to inspire those who really need it!

Separate Bookmark I use Chrome and I have about 10 tabs open on one page. They are all book marked, but I understand there is a way to copy them all to a separate bookmark so you can restore them all with just one click. Do you know of this trick?

Regards, Ken Reply: If you put all the bookmarks into one folder within bookmarks, then you can right click on the folder, and you have the option to “open all bookmarks”, which will open all the bookmarks in that folder.

Windows 10 Hi, I have upgraded from W7 to W10. In W7 I used to use PAINT to do some quick edits to pictures. But in W10 when I right click and select EDIT I get some weird new editor called Photo, which I do not like. How can I get PAINT back again...?

Reply: Paint is actually available in W10.

It is not in any of the W10 folders, but if you type Paint into your “Search Windows / Cortana” bar, it pops up.

You can also right click on the file, and select “Open With”, where you opt to make Paint your default image editor.

Google Translate

Hi, I have been trying to translate a document, using Google Translate, but struggling. I have scanned it into various formats, but they are either images files or PDF files, none of which I can use in Google Translate. Can you help please?

Reply: To scan text from a document into another text document, you need to use some Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. This will pick out the text from a scanned image, and allow you to copy and paste that text into Word or another text program, and paste into Google Translate.

OCR is not 100% perfect, so you may need to go through the scanned text and correct some errors.

Redford at eighty … and still counting!

Fifty four years ago a young 25 year old Robert Redford featured in his first movie ´War Hunt´ and now at the grand old age of 80 he´s decided to give up acting, choosing instead to focus solely on directing and art.

In an interview with his grandson Dylan, Redford said “I´m tired of acting and am throwing in the towel.” His career began working in television in 1960, in shows like Perry Mason, Dr. Kildare and The Twilight Zone, and talking about why he´s giving it all up he said “I’m an impatient person, so it’s hard for me to sit around and do take after take after take.” Robert also spoke of how he went to Europe as an artist “to experience different ways of seeing the world, explore storytelling through painting” was how he put it. He’s also been able to tell stories in film, going behind the camera in 1980 to make “Ordinary People,” which won him an Oscar for best director. Also during his legendary career, Robert founded the Sundance Film Festival and starred in over 70 movies.

If I had a hat I´d take it off to him.

I WENT to see ´An American Werewolf in London´ with a couple of friends in 1981, and it scared the life out of me. The film is now being revamped and will be directed by Max Landis, son of the original’s director John. Max will also script the remake, which has ´The Walking Dead´ writers Robert Kirkman and David Albert on board as executive producers ... OMG! The original movie told the tale of two American tourists who were attacked by a werewolf while backpacking across the North Yorkshire moors, an encounter that leaves one of them dead, and the other one finding out the alarming effect the attack has when the next full moon rolls around ... AAHH!! The movie will always be remembered for its scene involving a werewolf running riot through the London Underground. I can’t write anymore as I´m currently under the bed!

J.R.R. TOLKIEN´S trilogy of ´Lord of the Rings´ books was made into three films totalling 557 minutes of quite marvellous cinema. He was born in 1892 in South Africa and came from a family of middle-class craftsmen who made and sold clocks, watches and pianos.

Now the tables are about to turn as screenwriter Angus Fletcher, who´s compiled over six years’ worth of research material and interviews, has completed a script that is to be made into a biopic of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. The writer married Edith Bratt while at Oxford, but was caught up in the global conflict of the First World War, a dark time indeed, but Tolkien’s service in the British Army has since been attributed to developing his skills as an author.

Producers are reportedly launching the film at next year’s Berlin Film Festival to prospective buyers. They could call it ´Lord of the Books! ´

I´VE BEEN keeping you topped up over the last year or so with any news regarding a film about the life and times of Freddie Mercury. Ben Whishaw was originally offered the Freddie role, then Sacha Baron Cohen became the front runner, but after he upset guitarist Brian May he was given the boot. We now move onto Rami Malek who was born in Los Angeles, California, to Egyptian parents, who´s late father was a tour guide in Cairo, and whose mother is an accountant. Bryan Singer, the man behind the recent X-Men movies will direct the film, and he confirmed Rami’s role on an Instagram post featuring the legendary picture of the band. Rami won an Emmy for his work in ´Mr Robot´ at an award show this year, but playing such an iconic figure as Freddie Mercury is a whole different bag ´o beans.

Good luck Rami … you´ll need it mate!

IT’S MADDENING to be bringing Taylor Swift to the page again, as, like the Kardashians she´s a serial headline hugger. She´s here as she´s back in the recording studio, and according to E! News nothing is off limits. They´ve reported that she’s already written songs about exes Tom Hiddleston and Calvin Harris, one of her extremely unpleasant trademarks, although there’s no guarantee they´ll actually make it to the final cut of an album. T-Swizz, as she is affectionately known, is currently in the studio working with Drake, a Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, but at the time of writing there was no hint of it being anything other than a working relationship … Hum! E! News reported that Taylor and Drake are working on a ´different but very catchy´ sound, ´before adding ´they’re both been having a great time in the studio!´ I´ll leave you to fill in the blanks!

Being a victim I WAS bullied a fair bit when I was young. I always was shy, and bullies seemed to target me. It has stayed with me into adulthood, and I can’t seem to forget it. It even happened to me at work later on, but I reported it and it was dealt with. It has affected my confidence, although I try hard for it not to bother me. I don’t want that experience to ruin my whole life.

It is stopping me from advancement at work. What can I do?

Bullying is awful and wrong, and these people don’t realise the impact of their behaviour. If we allow things to still affect us, then the bullies have won. Now years have passed, and maybe these bullies have not given you another thought, and moved on with theirs lives, and this is what you must do. Ok you’ve had bad things happen, but you can either be a victim, or a survivor. If you lack confidence, some assertiveness training and confidence builder could be good for you. Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Indirect Object Pronouns As you know, speaking a language includes lots of things including self-confidence, body-language, guesswork and the sheer will to communicate.

None of these factors should be underestimated in our attempts to get our message across in another language.

However, understanding the structure of the language is also important if we wish to become competent, and as you know, one of the aims of these articles is to make the grammar a little more comprehensible. We may not be able to put it into practice straight away, but knowledge of grammar, or language structure, will help us to comprehend and give us the stepping stones to move forward.

You’ll have guessed by the length of that introduction that we’re in for a hefty bit of grammar, and you’ll be right. Next on my list of things to write about are some wonderful things called “Indirect Object Pronouns”. If the sight of that name doesn’t fill you with foreboding, try the Spanish equivalent “Complementos indirectos”. Even the Spanish run away in terror at the very mention.

However, on my list it is, and that is what we shall do! You always have the option of turning the page, but maybe I’ve now got you intrigued! One of the slightly awkward things about indirect object pronouns is that you have to already have some idea about direct object pronouns, and I actually wrote about those a long time ago. There are four articles about them in my Step

by Step Volume two, articles 65 to 68. However, here’s a quick summary, and then we’ll have to leave the rest for next week.

A “direct object” is something that directly receives the action of a verb. In the sentence, “The boy throws the ball”, “the ball” is the direct object. If we replace “the ball” with “it” (“The boy throws it”), the word “it” is now the “direct object pronoun” (or in Spanish complemento directo): a pronoun being a word that replaces a noun to save us having to keep repeating it. The difficulty with Spanish is that at this point the word order is different from English. In Spanish we say “The boy it throws”. Now, just so there’s at least some Spanish in this article, I’ll translate the two sentences: – “El niño tira la pelota”; “El niño la tira”.

Okay, so what’s an indirect object pronoun then? Well, if we say “The boy throws the ball to the girl”, “the ball” is still the direct object, and the girl is the “indirect object”. She also receives the action of the verb “to throw” but indirectly. Again the Spanish word order is different, we are going to be saying “The boy to her it throws” - only in Spanish. This is in fact “El niño se la tira” but how we get to that will now have to be explained on another day.

ALSO I feared facing a snide heckling audience, & that’s why I admire entertainers who lay it out for full public scrutiny – although not sure about a Sticky Vicky scrutiny.

Truth be told you entertainers know that if you’ve bombed, the audience have long forgotten your name before you’re half way home cursing the unappreciative dullards for being – drunk dumb dingbats. Tomorrow’s another day for you to shine on you crazy diamond. Saying that even this Internationally acclaimed artist suffered a less than effusive introduction at the hands of the dread Entertainments Secretary as she waited in the wings. “One two testing, best of order. Before we bring on the turn, who incidentally I didn’t vote for, the committee has brought to my attention that some members are urinating in the club parking area. If anyone, male or female, is caught piddling in car park they’ll be banned indefinitely – now here’s Dusty Springfield.” Some heckling, however, is most definitely called for. Take the case of Pia

Zadora a truly terrible actress who made Demi Moore (nominated as worst actress 6 times for the Golden Raspberry Award, aka Razzies) seem akin to the Great Dames Dench/Smith/ Mirren. She was appearing on stage as Anne Frank & making a right bolognese of her diary. At one stage the Nazis raided the house where she was hiding & interrogated the owner “Vhere iz ze Fräulein Frank?” (great accent huh? Where’s my Razzie?). From the hacked off audience came a shouted helpful hint, “She’s in the attic!” Fair play to perky Pia she won 2 Razzies (Butterfly & The Lonely Lady – nope, me neither) but never hid them away. The real death by a thousand cutting quips is stand up comedy – there’s no hiding place. It’s open season – unless it’s Ken Dodd - because if you engage in badinage during a Doddy gig, you’re there for a further 3 hours.

Supermarket sweep TOWNS ALONG the Costa Blanca are taking part in the ‘Great Collection’ at supermarkets which tempts people to support families struggling to make ends meet.

by JACK TROUGHTON Organised by the Alicante Food Bank, shoppers can make donations and the grub – including staples and festive treats – is distributed locally.

Pictured are volunteers in Benitachell at Mas y Mas, the local supermarket taking part in the campaign – all donations will go to Caritas for distribution in the community, helped by the town hall’s social services.

In Calpe, Mercadona has allowed teams to collect local donations for the first time – although the supermarket giant has always taken part in a national food bank campaign.

There are two of the chain’s outlets in the seaside town and it is hoped customers will also give seasonal foods – such as Turron, tinned fruit and chocolate – as well as hygiene products.

Volunteers from the Red Cross and Caritas will monitor donations at one supermarket – shoplifting has been a problem in the past – and the Calpe Food Bank the second.

Thai chicken and sweet potato soup A smooth and and spicy chicken soup with a vibrant colour that’s packed full of Asian aromatics Ingredients 1 tsp olive or rapeseed oil 2 garlic clove, chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped 2cm chunk root ginger, chopped 1 stalk lemongrass, bashed 1 x 25g pack coriander, leaves and stalks chopped separately 2 tbsp red Thai curry paste 750ml chicken stock (made with 2 stock cubes) 1 small can (160ml) coconut cream 500g sweet potato, peeled and roughly chopped 2 skinless chicken breast, sliced 1 lime, juice only 1 tsp sugar ½ tsp fish sauce crusty bread, to serve (optional) Method Heat the oil in a large saucepan.

Add the garlic, chilli, ginger, lemongrass, coriander stalks and curry paste and cook for 2 - 3 minutes until the aromas are released.

Add the chicken stock, coconut cream and sweet potatoes and cook for 15 minutes or until the potatoes are soft. Remove the lemongrass and discard. Carefully transfer to a blender and blitz until smooth. If freezing, for best results freeze at this point, otherwise as an easier option freeze complete recipe.

The Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja hosted the “III Health Tourism Forum” under the title “Radiology of health care to foreign residents in the province of Alicante”, the event brought together several experts in health and legal sectors. The rapporteurs agreed that ‘Brexit’ will not affect the health rights of British residents in Spain and were convinced that an agreement will be reached that will also benefit short-stay tourists.

This forum was attended by experts in different fields, such as the managing director of the Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, Francisco Fiestras, the general director of the newspaper La Verdad (co-organizer of the meeting), Antonio González, and the deputy for Tourism of the Diputación de Alicante, Eduardo Dolón; The lawyer of the law firm Heredia & Pellicer and expert in international law, Pedro Heredia, the director of the Provincial Observatory of Immigration of Alicante and professor of the university of Elche Miguel Hernández University, Alfonso Ortega; The international head of Quironsalud, Victoria Abad and the coordinator of British Associations of the Vega Baja and president of Help charity, Michelle Masson.

Their aim was to send a message of “tranquility” to the British population residing in Spain, and especially in the Costa Blanca, after the “hysteria” that was caused after the triumph of Brexit.

The managing director of the Quirónsalud Hospital Torrevieja, Francisco Fiestras, advocated in making hasty decisions and supports a campaign that is informative and reassuring to both tourists and residents: “They should know that their health is covered one way or another, “he added.

According to lawyer Pedro Heredia, European legislation will ensure that health rights are not “restricted or eliminated”, while for tourists, it depends on the guarantees offered by the Social Secu-

rity for European citizens, “There will be an agreement made”.

In the last point, professor Miguel Hernández University of Elche, Alfonso Ortega, stressed that, as European citizens, they are guaranteed care in emergency situations, in the same manner as are minors and pregnant women.

For further assistance, it is foreseen that a bilateral agreement will be reached between the United Kingdom and Spain due to the economic figures that are handled in the health sector between both countries.

He indicated specifically that Spain is the second health supplier to the United Kingdom, by which the British paid almost 280 million euros last year.

In any case, this expert opined that ‘Brexit’ is going to be soft “and finally, it will not have any effect even if it does go ahead” it doesn’t matter for a European Union of 27 countries “having the UK as a “Satellite country” having a relationship similar to that of Norway or Iceland.

Help chairwoman Michelle Masson, who is in contact with many of her compatriots through the association, has blamed the English media for contributing to this misinformation and generating doubts. The concern has reached such a point that there are already cases that have been revealed, of English who have returned to their country and have put their home here for sale.

Nevertheless, Deputy Eduardo Dolon stressed that hotel tourism has not noticed any effects of ‘Brexit’, although the residential area has, and this is the area in which health tourism is supported and that is required to strengthen the provincial institution, this is the reason why he has advocated “working together to eliminate any doubts.”

In conclusion, all the speakers agreed on the importance of promoting informative campaigns, both in Spain and the United Kingdom, to “continue together to use tools making sure that the health part is well and fully covered.”

Peugeot 208 GT Line EACH GENERATION should better the last.

So said my late grandfather. I look at my parents and question whether they did in fact achieve this and wonder whether I will. And I look at Peugeot and ask the same question about the 208 over the legendary 205.

Its great ancestor the Peugeot 205 set the standard in the 1980s and was many a boy racer’s aspiration. The 208 has to try and surpass this. And that is a tough thing to do. Where the 205 was small, nimble and a great sports hatchback the 208, like many vehicles (and people) these days seems to have added the pounds and is, as a consequence, less agile, it feels. The 205 was basic, even though some models did feature electric windows and there were certainly no safety features like ABS braking or all round airbags. It was, though, more stylish and able. The 205 GTi won The World Rally Championship Manufacturers’ Championship (WMC) in 1985 and 1986, something that was later achieved by the 206 from 2000 to 2002. Indeed the 205, like the 206 was a worthy adversary to the Golf GTi. The 208 is yet to match this magnificent achievement although it was named Rally Car of the Year at the Autosport Awards in 2013.

But times have changed and life moves on. The 208 GT Line with its touch of red on the bonnet that continues onto the alloys and into the interior does have style and the fixed panoramic glass roof certainly throws a lot of light into an otherwise dark cabin. Its ancestors never indulged in such extravagance. It would be even better, though if this could be actually opened, and electrically. There is a manually operated cover that can be pulled across if the extra daylight bothers you.

The seats are supportive over a long journey. Although the GT Line with its low profile tyres does feel sporty, gripping corners well, it doesn’t feel as competent as I would like despite all the gadgetry including the anti-skid switch. What has happened to the dashboard? Did the designer forget that the driver quite likes to see the speedometer and rev counter? Preferring not to have them obscured by the steering wheel. I know the steering column can be adjusted but not so as to allow a comfortable driving position and a decent view of the instrument panel. Aside from this the interior is finished to a good standard and it’s definitely a driver’s car, with plenty of oomph, if required. However, it can feel sluggish if not worked hard in the

right gear. If pushed too hard the engine will stutter demanding a gear change. Those low profile tyres do mean that there is extra road noise inside the cabin, too. The fuel tank is not the largest and so it is necessary to refuel fairly frequently.

I find the five speed manual gearbox a little notchy but the cruise control on the left handside of the steering wheel is easy to operate. I cannot fathom how to operate the satellite navigation but the air conditioning and other little luxuries are thankfully easier on the intellect.

Incidentally, sometimes I like to pull away in second gear especially when on a hill; I try this in the 208 only to find that the stop/start doesn’t like it and the engine stalls.

Although a capable family hatchback with its distinctive looks I cannot help but feel that something has been lost in its overall character and that technology does not overcome this issue.

School Bus Checks

All this week, officers form the Guardia Civil traffic department, assisted by colleagues from the Local Police, have been carrying out safety checks on vehicles carrying some of the most vulnerable road users, school buses.

On average, school buses in Spain carry 230,000 students to and from school every day. Although statistically there are considerably less incidents involving school buses than almost any other form of transport, they still pose a significant risk if the rules are not followed and safety systems ignored.

The inspections cover a variety of different elements, including ensuring that all documentation, including insurance for example, are up to date, that the driver is authorised and safe to drive the vehicles, and that the vehicles themselves are of an acceptably high standard, not just having satisfied the mandatory testing, but that the systems are fully functional.

Seatbelts are crucial for the safe carriage of passengers in vehicles. Whereas no new bus will be authorised if it doesn´t have seatbelts fitted, there are still a number of older vehicles

on the roads in which seatbelts were never installed and are still allowed in service. In fact, the law came into force in 2007 that ensured seatbelts are fitted in all new vehicles, and yet, only around 60% of the buses in service actually have them fitted due to them entering service before that time. The use of seatbelts in these vehicles reduce fatal injuries by 90% in the event of a frontal collision or rollover because, when properly fastened, they prevent the projection of passenger and reduces impact injuries to the abdomen and legs.

In 2015, school transport vehicles were involved in 27 incidents. Fourteen of them occurred on intercity roads and thirteen on urban roads. In these incidents there were no deaths, although nine occupants were injured. The most common contributing factors to these incidents were distractions or inappropriate speed by at least one of the vehicles involved.
