Website goes all English SPANISH CONTENT on the White House website was removed shortly after Donald Trump’s inauguration as US President. by Jack Troughton There are around 37 million people living in the United States believed to be fluent in the language and another 15 million with a ‘good knowledge’ of Spanish but do not speak it regularly. Yet users trying to access www.whitehouse. gov/espanol were suddenly faced with an error message saying: “Sorry, the page you are looking for cannot be found.” The change angered senior Spanish government ministers on this side of the Atlantic – who believe it was “logical” the USA recognised it had a large Spanish-speaking community. However, the move is only likely to be temporary. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer blamed the work load in getting as much information about Mr Trump’s administration on the website as quickly as possible. While out on the campaign trail in 2015, the new President criticised a rival for the Republican ticket for speaking Spanish. Mr Trump told Jeb Bush: “This is a country where we speak English, not Spanish.”

Jump opens charity parachute DAREDEVIL RICHARD Conway remains down to earth after completing a sponsored parachute jump to help two Costa Blanca charities. by Jack Troughton A loyal member of the Royal Naval Association, he took to the skies to raise over 4,000 Euros to help out two Torrevieja charities with much-needed funds – Alzheimer’s and the cancer association AECC. Jumping in tandem with an instructor from 4,000m, he sedately fell to earth while enjoying views on a sunny day with only light winds. Richard flew from Aerodrome Obdura, near Albacete, in a Piper Cherokee, and was sponsored by fellow members of the RNA and The Nook Pub team, as well as family and friends. The Torrevieja Branch of the RNA meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 5pm at the El Paraiso Bar and Restaurant near Carrefour, Torrevieja. New faces are always welcome and RTN was assured people do not need to be former Royal Navy personnel – or are they required to jump out of aeroplanes...however, new members do get to enjoy a ‘tot’ of rum. A word from the Ed... Dark days and white knights EXPATS ACROSS the Costa Blanca have taken the children cared for by EMAUS to their hearts and made sure youngsters enjoy as normal a life as possible; despite the financial gloom that has dogged the association. In voluntary administration since the summer of 2015, a dedicated EMAUS team has soldiered on, financially bruised but not broken – and always appreciating the generous support providing essentials and little luxuries. And at last it seems there are two candidates hoping to ride to the rescue as white knights; helping this unique organisation continue its valued work as a community support network. Fingers crossed the dark days are finally over and the hand to mouth situation comes to an end. Back at RTN Towers, the team is also hoping for a happy ending regarding the weather. After four seasons in as many days, a return to more common Spanish winter weather is high on the wish list. KEEPING ACTIVE, making friends and integrating as much as possible are key to a successful retirement in Spain, believes Brian Todd. by jack troughton He said “looking after yourself” was also important as people get older and mastering a level of Spanish was also crucial. Brian and his wife Fay are both members of the British Consulate’s ‘Our Local Ambassador’ scheme; using their experiences to guide other expats or people of thinking of moving to the sun. The couple live in Orihuela Costa. They have lived in Spain permanently for nine years – previously they had a holiday home and when Brian retired from the RAF they decided to live here full time. Brian said choosing the right location was important – they looked around the area to note where the bus stops were, how far it was to hospitals and the general facilities on offer. “As we get older and older, things can become a little more difficult; you have to think about this sensibly,” he said. However, Brian and Fay were able to cope with Spanish legalities themselves, arranging their own medical SIP cards, driving licences, NIE numbers and resident certificates. “My advice is do your homework. Check what you can do yourself but do not be afraid to ask others – and do not rely on pub gossip.” And he said they had both taken Spanish lessons; honing their skills when they travelled around the country in a small motor home. “If possible start learning Spanish as soon as you can. “In the motor home we went here, there and everywhere. We met Spanish people who spoke English as well and enjoyed conversing half and half in both languages.” They also used the Spanish IMSERSO pensioner scheme to go to Benidorm at Christmas. “When we first started there were only one or two English couples – now it’s about half and half – it helped integration by talking with Spanish people.” And Brian said their local councillor was their travel agent. “We went away on holiday with her parents on a ship; they spoke to us in English and we spoke to them in Spanish and we all understood each other.” He said they were both involved in U3A, the church, the Royal British Legion and the Royal Air Force Association. “I think it’s important to keep busy; the things we belong to; should the time come when there is only one of us; we will still be welcome in our own right,” added Brian.

The high-profile charity went into a “voluntary state of insolvency” in June 2015 and administrators have controlled the purse strings ever since, attempting to liquidate assets and reduce debts. However, during its economic woes, highlighted over the years by RTN, the public across the whole of Alicante through dedicated expat charities have continued to support EMAUS. At present there are more than 90 youngsters cared for in seven children’s homes; a baby unit, women’s shelter, a unit for young handicapped people, and an old people’s home – all under the umbrella of an association founded in Altea by Francisco Nadal Ivars in 1979. On Tuesday, RTN was told by EMAUS that the administrators were in negotiation with two potential suitors; one is understood to be based in Barcelona and a second in southern Alicante. And as part of any rescue package, EMAUS has set out certain requirements and the associations looking to take over must meet two conditions set out by administrators: firstly, all the homes remain open, and secondly, that no workers – there are more than 300 employees – are made redundant. Within the association offices it is also hoped that whichever association takes over; the name EMAUS will remain in some form. GRAVE The association was badly hit by the economic crisis, the fall of the banks and loss of credit lines – prompting its “grave financial situation”. When the association went into voluntary receivership in 2015, its founder hoped agreement could be reached with creditors. He said: “We will continue to help and protect those who depend on us – the minors and women at risk in the shelter. “Because we have called in the official receiver does not mean we will cease to exist.” It is understood that EMAUS owes around 8 million Euros to the taxman, around 2 million Euros in unpaid social security contributions, and “significant” amounts to banks after mortgaging property. At times staff have been forced to wait up to six months to be paid and when government money has been received much has been channelled off to service debts. But charities such as Make A Smile, Grant A Wish, and Friends of the Children of EMAUS have stepped up to the mark and made sure essentials like food and clothing are delivered to the children’s homes, the women’s shelter and the baby unit. GENEROSITY And thanks to the “incredible” generosity of people over the festive season, Christmas and Three Kings were celebrated and there are presents for birthdays across the year. Carole Saunders, President of Friends of the Children of EMAUS, which was launched to support the youngsters a decade ago, said it was vital the association was rescued. “This has got to happen – there are absolutely no other children´s homes like EMAUS on the Costa Blanca,” she said. “Everyone is being very positive about it. “The staff, importantly, are also very positive because the administrator has had a considerable amount of meetings with the associations interested in taking over…he has been able to give the staff hope. “I am sure the Generalitat Valenciana is fully aware of the situation and would never allow the homes to be closed down.” And she said EMAUS workers had been “absolutely wonderful, dedicated, and always keeping a smile on their faces” despite the problems. Carole said many small businesses in the area had also suffered during ‘La Crisis’ and were struggling to get back on an even keel financially.

IKEA recalls beach chair FURNITURE GIANT IKEA has issued a global recall for a beach chair after reports in can collapse and cause injury – anyone who bought any model of the Mysingo chair to return it to stores for a full refund. The Swedish company has over 300 stores in 27 countries, including Spain, said after washing the fabric seat it was possible to re-assemble the chair incorrectly leading to a risk of “falling or finger entrapment”.

Supporters are asked to gather at noon in the Plaza del Carmen, Orihuela, to back Asoka; following its apparently successful tender. The bidding process for the new contract is currently on ice after allegations Asoka did not have the financial backing for the job and while the association’s claims regarding its economic solvency are resolved. Asoka volunteers hope it is just an administrative error and that they will be able to continue doing the sterling work they have done over the past three years.

The team demands that the centre remains in their hands as a private company would never maintain such a large number of animals waiting for rehoming and therefore would put animals to sleep to save money. Nick Moore, a volunteer said: “There is no way a private company would pay to treat sick animals or pay for food. They’d put them to sleep. We must make our voice heard. It’s high time we had a demonstration!” Asoka’s concern is that the contract does not require that anyone in charge of the centre has a no kill policy; this weekend’s demonstration is also in support of a no kill policy across Spain. Nick added: “To show your support for Asoka’s great work join them this Saturday at Midday in Orihuela. There’s plenty of parking in the shopping centre at Ociopia then it’s a short walk to the Plaza next to the Town Hall. Bring your whistle!”

Horses enjoy eastern promise

QUALIFIED INSTRUCTORS will teach animal owners the secrets of equine Shiatsu in the first course of its kind staged in Spain. by Edward Graham A two-day introduction to the therapy – developed over centuries in Japan and based on the same principles as acupuncture except using hands on pressure points – is being offered in Alicante. Instructor Susanna Tuisku (pictured with patient) helped by Rita Uotila and Anne Hakala are flying in from Finland to offer the instruction on how to relax a horse at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales this March. They have offered to donate net proceeds from the course to the non-profit making sanctuary; helping raise funds for ongoing care and feed. Rita has previously donated tack and equipment from Finland but wanted to do more – and after seeing the positive impact of Shiatsu on her own horse Elli, contacted Easy Horse Care founders Sue and Rod Weeding. She said: “I am truly amazed at what Sue and Rod have accomplished and how they have given a second chance to so many mistreated animals. I hope giving Shiatsu treatments to the equine residents might improve their condition even further.” The course, scheduled for 11th and 12th March, will be conducted in English and teach basic equine Shiatsu concepts – previous experience is not necessary and everyone taking part will receive a certificate. Training costs 100 Euros. Anyone interested can reserve their place with a 25 Euro registration fee, with the balance to be paid at the start of training. As one of the country’s leading designers, he has won awards for his work in such diverse fields as fiestas, sports and cultural activities. A total of 12 entries were received for the first year of this competition, the winning design (pictured) selected by a jury made up of Mojacar’s Moors and Christians Association. And the winning poster will be presented at FITUR 2017, the International Tourism Fair held in Madrid, as part of the promotional material that a delegation from Mojácar Town Council has taken to the event.

Weathering the storm Torrential rain and gales gusting up to hurricane strength battered the Costa Blanca on Saturday â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the extreme weather causing widespread damage. by Edward Graham The north of the region was worst hit, a red weather warning was in place, and the storm arrived as the area recovered from heavy snow falls. And temperatures again plummeted as forecast by weathermen and once again it was a case of having to batten down the hatches along the coast and inland. Buildings suffered, roads were closed by fallen trees and landslides, and once again there was widespread flooding and beaches were swept away in some areas. On Monday as the storm eased, teams of workmen were out mopping up in the wake of the storm. Rugby on parade THE COSTA Blanca hosts another high profile international rugby match next Saturday (4th February) when Russia takes on a British Army XV at Villajoyosa. by Jack Troughton The game is being played at Villajoyosa Rugby Stadium – home to La Vila – and kickoff is at 4pm. Entrance is 12 Euros for adults, children under 12 enjoy free admission. The Russians were last in La Vila performing a training camp in 2014 and even played a game against La Vila’s first team. On this occasion, the match against the British will serve as preparation for the Spain-Russia clash being played on Saturday 11th February in Madrid. Mojacar in Madrid A TEAM from Mojacar Town Hall attended the 37th International Tourism Fair in Madrid – FITUR 2017 – attended by representatives of the world’s tourism industry. Mojácar has a stand in the Andalucia Pavilion, as part of the “Costa de Almería” exhibition, organized by the Diputación Provincial de Almería. The town’s councillors were led by Mayor Rosmari Cano, with Emmanuel Agüero, Councillor for Tourism and Carmen García Campoy, Director of the Town Council’s Tourism Department. And the team took advantage of its presence at FITUR to present the municipality’s new tourist website, an innovative, dynamic and visual promotional tool especially designed to be compatible with all types of modern devices. It is hoped the website, developed in several languages, will impress visitors with its photographic quality, offering to the user new perspectives and photographs. During 2017, Mojácar plans to focus on accessibility and continuous improvement in the quality of its beaches, the reinforcement of its historical and cultural values and in developing sport as a consolidated tourism attraction.

A history of animal magic by Jack Troughton ANIMAL CHARITY PAWS-PATAS has organised its third ‘First Wednesday’ event for 1st February – and will tell its history and “trials and tribulations” of rescuing and re-homing cats and dogs. Taking the stage and answering questions at the Mojacar Centro de Usos Multiples between 1pm and 3pm will be Sue Elmer, Karen Polansky, and Janet Franklin. Sue started the first shelter 28 years ago when she obtained free land from Vera Town Hall; Karen joined to assist and is now the charity President; and Janet is one of the longest-serving volunteers, a past Treasurer, event organiser and continues to do the paperwork and arrange transport to get animals to their new ‘forever homes’. There are also stalls, the chance to sponsor an animal, entertainment and a bar at the popular

event. And on Sunday 12th February, the charity has organised a ‘Cats Treasure Hunt’; providing a fun day out and raising money for the PAWS-PATAS cat neutering programme. The hunt starts at 10.30am from Camping Los Gallardos. Entry is 10 Euros a car with up to

ANIMAL CHARITY SCAN is holding its 2017 Annual General Meeting on Saturday 18th February in the El Vergel Town Hall. The Society for the Care of Animals in Need AGM is open to everyone but only members can vote. First call is 4pm and second call 4.30pm. Root and branch U3A MARINA Baixa has proved itself a ‘mighty oak’ over its 10-year history as people flock to join the association making new friends and developing new skills. In October 2006, a small group planted the seed. By November that year there were 29 members and a committee of four. However U3A has flourished. At its Annual General Meeting on Monday, the membership was 469, with a hard-working committee of 10 – and 194 people braved the weather to take part – and (pictured) sign in. The U3A branch caters for English-speaking members no longer in fulltime employment and offers a full menu of different specialised groups, activities and events. And an Assistance Group provides support for members who are unwell so that help is always just a phone call away – a huge reassurance when many of the members now live far away from their families.

Medicine Man (pictured) is the special guest at the CB Blues matinee celebration and the professional band has been playing its classic sound professionally since 1997. El Cid has got into the groove too – chef is presenting a special custom Delta American Menu for the afternoon; giving the event a true Blues experience. Víctor Jordá’s is the founder, lead guitarist and singer of Medicine Man. He has a rich “buttered-toast with honey” voice, and revealed: “We´ll play standards from the classics, tunes that you´ll know. Chicago Blues tunes are what we really enjoy playing, so I´m sure we will all have a great time. No place like home

FAMED FOR their highly developed work ethic, the humble ant has sophisticated navigational skills to get back home, scientists have discovered. by Jack Troughton The insects use the sun and memories to get back to the nest – walking backwards and dragging heavy loads of food. And while researchers believed they used the sun’s position in the sky and visual memories for a return journey; until now it was believed they were two separate reflexes and required ants to be facing their direction of travel. However, scientists have shown ants walking backwards will occasionally look behind them to check on their surroundings and use the information to set a course relative to the sun; allowing them to get home whatever direction they are facing. The research by an international team, including scientists from the University of Edinburgh, say it suggests ant understand special relations in the external world and not just relative to themselves.

The flexible and robust navigation displayed by the ants could inspire the development of computer programmes with step-by-step sets of operations to guide robots. Part of the research studied forager ants in the deserts of Seville. The team sunk barriers into the ground to create a one-way route to the nest, gave the ants a small or large piece food; making the insect walk forwards or with a greater load backwards. Those going backwards used the sun but also stopped on occasion to utilise visual memories. A mirror was used to alter the real position of the sun...the ants set off in the wrong direction but quickly altered course. Professor Barbara Wood, of the University of Edinburgh, said: “Ants have a relatively tiny brain, less than the size of a pinhead; yet they can navigate successfully under many difficult conditions, including going backwards. “Understanding their behaviour gives us new insights into brain function, and has inspired us to build robot systems that mimic their functions.”

The people I am most sorry for regarding a hard Brexit, are all the small companies and manufacturers in the UK, because if they have to withdraw from the single market, I am sure that it will take years for them to find other marketplaces for their products. There is a very interesting and sometimes dramatic, two years on the horizon where the press are going to drive us all nuts, and with regard to Mr Trump, I for one, am filled with apprehension with regard to diplomacy, as I no longer feel as if a safe pair of hands are on “the button”. Closer to home in Spain, some of the worst weather in my 20 odd years of living here is happening. Sadly the houses are just not equipped to cope with such horrendous rain, cold and snow. In my company I personally offer a claims service for all my clients and I am confident that this is a great help to many. I do not have to provide this extra service, however I realise how difficult claiming sometimes is, especially in Spain. In Javea we have had a horrendous fire, then a large area of the east coast of Spain got hit by floods, then snow and now violent wind and rain. It never seems to stop and has become very, very demanding for both my company

and Liberty Seguros, because of the sheer volume of claims. I have often spoken about the Consortium, which provides insurance for those events deemed to be catastrophic by the government and I do feel that I should reiterate the situation regarding this government department. As no doubt some of you are aware, on every vehicle, home, boat and commercial policy there is a certain percentage of consortium tax, automatically included in the policy price, as standard. I think this is a great idea when dealing with a disaster. However, it is never quite as simple or as fast when you have to deal with the consortium. My company is not obliged to handle these claims for you, but we do offer help. One reason is that you will find very few speak English. Also, due to the amount of claims they have to handle when it is designated a catastrophe, always means a long queue. Yes, it does become frustrating and we do try our best to push them along, but due to the sheer size of the area often involved and subsequently the huge number of claims, this system, which I think not only works but is pretty magnificent, does and will take time to settle, no matter how many times you complain. The other aspect where the Spanish have it well organised is health tourism. I read in one of the national newspapers from the UK, for example, that there was a £350,000 bill outstanding for a Nigerian mother, who gave birth to a child in a British hospital, who sadly then had to go into intensive care. She must have been in the hospital for some time, but still they didn´t obtain payment before

she left. This would never happen over here. The first thing they ask for on your arrival at the hospital is proof of identity and confirmation of your eligibility to National Health, proof of health insurance, or the European travel card. When listening to debates on this subject in the English press, it is obvious that some kind of proof of identity should be produced before entering the hospital, does create and an outcry, because when the issue of identity cards in the UK is ever broached, the only response you hear is – it is against democracy and freedom. Is this realistic in this day and age? As many of you are aware, private health in Spain is encouraged by the government, as they do not look at it as a class issue, but as a freedom of choice for many people. One great aspect is that there are a number of good companies selling health insurance at realistic prices. ASSSA, the health insurance my company has been selling for many years now, offers a very good service with an excellent policy. Registering your vehicle in Spain, Spanish license plates and registration document Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in

use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. Get back money lost buying property ‘off-plan’ in Spain PEOPLE WHO have lost money buying a property off-plan in Spain - because the developer is insolvent, has disappeared or has not handed over the property - you should know that apart from the money lost, can claim against the banks involved. The banks are also responsible for the interest; which could sometimes represent approximately 50% of the money paid for the property. Laws 57/68 and the LOE establish the banks must give a guarantee to off-plan buyers, covering the money paid to the developer plus legal interest from the moment when each payment is made and until their return. This could mean, for example, that if 50,000 Euros was paid on 01/01/2006 a claim for interest accrued up to 01/01/2017 would be 22,684.93 Euros. For this reason, banks increasingly focus their arguments in court cases - like the ones we have against them for our clients - on the fact that the interest must begin to not from payment, but from the time when a claim is made. They say that only at that time is a bank is aware about the existence of a problem and the need for repayment. But, we believe that such allegations from banking entities should not be accepted by courts; for the following reasons: 1. The law states: The interest that banks must pay in light of Law 57/68 and Law 38/1999 (LOE), could not be other than the legal interest of the money of the amount paid from when the payment is made until is paid back. These laws foresee the legal obligation to repay, in the event of non-completion of the works, the amounts delivered by the customer plus legal interest from when each of the payments is made. Since the liability of the banks has its base in these regulations, the moment where the interest must begin to

count should be as indicated. 2. In addition, it has been established by the jurisprudence (court precedents), including numerous judgments granted in favour of our clients, and even and repeatedly by the Supreme Court itself, in judgments including case numbers 733/2015, 142/2016, 174/2016, 527/2016. Therefore, and because of the importance that the interest has in a claim, it is crucial to insure when claiming for refund of the money lost in the purchase of a property in Spain, it includes correct and properly justified the interest, because the amounts can be very high. Councils face funding crisis COSTA BLANCA town halls are facing a funding crisis as central government queries population figures and looks to make savings. Madrid allocates financial support on the basis of how many people live in a municipality – based on the town hall census or ‘padron’. However, it has become clear in many communities a lot of people have moved away and the figures are no longer accurate and people are being urged to renew their status as residents. The coastal town of Calpe is already taking action to insure its figures are up to date – otherwise it could lose 1.25 million Euros in government money. Councillor Carole Saunders said for many years it was enough for a resident to “make some movement” with the town hall to show they were still living in a community and renew their padron – but this was no longer a guarantee of updating the census. “Certainly the government now want everybody to renew their padron every five years for residents,” she said. “If you have been on the padron for longer than five years you should be checking with your local office to insure you are on the census.” Calpe is even calling ‘missing’ people to check whether they still live in the town and have employed a firm to go door to door in a bid to improve the situation. Mrs Saunders said government figures put the population at 19,500 rather than the 31,000 people previously listed – and falling under 20,000 meant a cut in financial support. “The grant based on the town hall census will be a lot less – that inevitably means, just as with many other towns, councils will have to put up taxes or cut spending,” she said. “Basically, the government didn’t care when there was plenty of money; it didn’t need to be penny pinching; now it wants to control town hall spending and its own expenditure.” Pictured is Calpe Mayor Cesar Sanchez who is determined to produce an accurate town census to maintain funding levels.

THE GOOD guys beat the baddies in a closely run contest on the Costa Blanca as the annual Careline Theatre panto provided ‘no strings attached’ fun with ‘Pinocchio’. by Jack Troughton

Everyone knows the fairytale of the wooden puppet who becomes a real little boy – Sandy Shaw even won the European Song Contest singing about his strings; rather than lack of them. And once again audiences – several of whom are still waiting patiently for a glimpse of this success because of storms robbing the Alcalali theatre of power – were treated to the now traditional Careline blend of story, song, dance, colourful costumes and quite amazingly artistic backdrops. The story takes us from the streets of Old Bianco to Geppetto’s workshop and plotting in the watering hole of ‘The

Gondola and Trumpet’. Once Pinocchio and his conscience Jiminy Cricket are kidnapped, the audience is treated to the puppet theatre, Pleasure Island, a gold mine and the inside of a whale before heading back to dry land and a grand finale and the happy ever after – quite a trip! Pasta and pizza gags abound until the evil Stromboli (Paul Young) - armed with catch line ‘shut-uppa-your-face’- and his mafia cohorts are finally undone by a team of determined youngsters. The younger members of the cast enjoyed a great day at the office. Abigail Baldwin, 16, as Maria, 15-year-old Tasha Fish as love interest Antonio, Emma Clay, 14, as Pinocchio (coping

well with a nose growing contraption) and a very green and very cheeky 12-year-old Connie Levey as Jiminy, all impressed with fine performances. Mini and Maxi Mozarella – Linda Arthur and Robin Baxter – were the egotistical ‘actors’ prepared to do Stromboli’s dirty work for a bit of cash and were genuinely funny from their entrance. However, the star comedy turn was Candy Wright as the bighearted but bumbling odd-job man Lampwick – an arcade game super Mario for the pantomime age. Windows 10 I recently had Windows 10 fail to install an update (the download locked at 85%) and rebooting did not fix the problem. The solution was to go into Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download and delete everything in that folder, BUT NOT THE FOLDER ITSELF. Restarted the computer and the update redownloaded and installed without a problem. Just information for you in case someone else has a problem with updates. upgrade programs Hi, I have a PC with XP. I am constantly being hounded to upgrade programs, and my Anti Virus no longer seems to update or work. Any advice? Reply: Many programs are no longer supported on XP, and so these programs are no longer updated. And as programs, including web browsers and antivirus become more powerful requiring more computing power, you may find your PC is no longer able to handle them. The only option would be to upgrade to a newer version of Windows, like Windows 10. This may mean a new PC, if yours is not compatible or powerful enough for W10. Although you can still continue to use XP, you do so at a risk of not having the most up to date and secure versions of programs.

pop ups Hi, I watch streams on my PC, but get a lot of pop ups and adverts? Can I get rid of them? Reply: Some adverts are actually “embedded” into the stream, so you cannot remove them. Others, like pop-ups, can usually be stopped a number of was. Most browsers have a “pop up blocker” option in their settings. Or you can add an addon like “Pop Up Blocker”. But many of the free streams have “hidden” popups and adverts... which are tricky to cancel, having to locate the very small “x” on the screen. Sometimes just click on the “full screen” option allows you to watch without these adverts.

Imperatives - Usted In our last article we talked about imperatives, or commands, when addressed to more than one person in a familiar form. We are going to carry on with commands as we are now going to look at formal singular commands. You may feel that one kind of command is quite enough, but this particular one is important for at least two reasons. Firstly, it is what is often said to you in everyday situations. Perhaps the person in the office is telling you to bring another piece of paper along (you know, on those rare occasions when you don’t get it right the first time!), or sending you to another desk, telling you when to come back or that you have to fill in a form. It is highly likely that these orders will be given to you in the form we are now going to see. The other reason this form is important is that it is going to give us an introduction to something else – to be revealed next week.

You may remember that the familiar singular or “tú” command makes use of the third person singular of the present tense. In other words “escribe” can mean “he or she writes” or just the familiar command “write” as in “escribe tu nombre” (write your name). Likewise “abre” means “he, she or it opens” and also the familiar command “open” as in “abre la puerta” (open the door). Now, to form the formal (usted) command we have to make use of the FIRST person singular of the present tense. You know - words like “hablo”, “tomo”, “como”, “vuelvo”, “vivo”, “escribo”“ and also the funny ones like “tengo”, “vengo”, “digo”, “hago”. These are all first person present tense forms, meaning: “I speak”, “I take”, “I eat”, “I return”, “I live, “I write”, “I have”, “I

come”, “I say” and “I do”. Are you ready? This is what happens. If the verb belongs to the “ar” group, we change the ending to “e” and if the verb belongs to the “er” and “ir” groups, we change the ending to “a”. So, this is how we change the examples above into formal commands. “Hablo” becomes “hable” and “tomo” becomes “tome” (both “ar” verbs) “Como” becomes “coma” and “vuelvo” becomes “vuelva” (both “er” verbs) “Vivo” becomes “viva” and “escribo” becomes “escriba” (both “ir” verbs). The funny ones obey the rules in exactly the same way: “tengo” becomes “tenga” and “hago” becomes “haga” (both “er” verbs)

Now you know where “dígame” comes from - it’s the polite way of inviting someone to speak; and why people say “tome” when they hand things to you – they are politely telling you take something from them. Isn’t it amazing that politeness in Spanish can be expressed by a single change of letter, when politeness in English requires us to waffle for 3 minutes? We have just turned the key of the door to a completely new concept. By transposing a few letters we are entering a parallel universe like Alice stepping through the looking glass and polite commands are just the beginning of an exciting adventure.

However my enthusiasm was dampened when, with the Yardbirds, he did a gig at the Brighton Dome where 10 years later an unknown Swedish acronym would win the Eurovision Song Contest. To say the show was a shambles is akin to saying Simon Cowell likes a drop of Botox. Now well documented, not least by himself, Eric had major pharmaceutical demons lurking & they appeared that night on stage with a vengeance. Bizarrely the support act was Millie & her ‘Boy Lollipop’ who stole & saved the show, strange bedfellows indeed. Although no weirder than Jimi Hendrix as a support act to the ‘Monkees’ in the US & even dafter Englebert Humperdinck in the UK. Soon after this debacle ‘Slowhand’ left to join the John Mayall Blues Band where he indulged his love of the grittier side of music. Ironically, his schmaltzy ‘Wonderful Tonight’ is one of today’s most requested radio songs - a ballad so saccharine even James Blunt would turn his aquiline hooter up at it. Years ago,when I wore a younger man’s budgie smugglers (Grrrrr), I was the compère at a gig in Walsall - the Jewel of the Black Country, although her Gracious Majesty might not concur. Visiting a wet Walsall QE2’s speech-writer penned “We are very happy to be here”- rumour has it HRH crossed out ‘very.’ On the bill, this ‘Odd Couple’ - Aneka & Billy Idol. Aneka had just released ‘Japanese Boy’ (a World wide hit but not in The Land Of The Rising Sun, they thought it sounded too Chinese) & Master Idol had just gone solo leaving punksters ‘Generation X’. Talk about an identity crisis – she dressed as a Geisha when in fact she was a rather strait laced Gaelic speaking Scottish folk singer – he was a well educated middle class lad with good manners (he even made us all a cup of tea) & not some snarling barbarian. Another weird one for the scrapbook - in 1974 Bruce Springsteen opened for Lynn (‘Rose Garden’) Anderson, who made the Singing Nun sound like Janis Joplin. Greek lamb & macaroni bake A cross between moussaka and macaroni cheese, this thrifty Mediterranean pasta bake makes for a hearty meal Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 2 garlic clove, crushed 500g lean lamb mince 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 beef or lamb stock cube 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes 1 tbsp dried oregano 400g macaroni 250g tub ricotta 50g Parmesan, grated 50ml milk garlic bread, to serve (optional) Method Heat the oil in a large pan, add the onion and cook for 10 mins until soft. Add the garlic and cook for 1 min more, then tip in the lamb mince, turn up the heat and brown, breaking up the mince with a

wooden spoon. Once the lamb is browned, add the cinnamon, crumbled stock cube, tomatoes and oregano. Stir well and simmer for 15 mins, covered, then for 15 mins, uncovered, until the sauce has thickened and the tomatoes have cooked down. Meanwhile, cook the macaroni following pack instructions. Drain well. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Mix together the ricotta, most of the Parmesan and the milk with plenty of seasoning, and stir into the macaroni. Tip the mince into a large baking dish, top with the macaroni mixture, and scatter over the remaining Parmesan. Bake for 30 mins until golden and bubbling. Serve hot with garlic bread, if you like.

“IT’S SURPRISING how large the CR-V is if it’s correctly packed,” smirks my wife as we head away from Suffolk. She’s a cheeky girl sometimes. I had spent ages loading the Honda for our trip away but only minutes into the journey Harriett (3) and Heidi (1) were busy helping themselves to the provisions for our self-catering break. My wife was keen to nip this in the bud on our return journey. And of course she did by loading the vehicle herself. I’m not complaining though. It gave me a rest! I must say though that this 2WD SUV always surprises me. It must be the third or fourth time I have had the privilege of driving this model and this version is by far the best of them all in my opinion, and not just because my wife can load it better than I can. You see, this version is a diesel example and its 1.6-litre is claimed to return over 60mpg. Despite very careful light-footed driving I have only been able to see it return 54mpg. That could be due to the amount of luggage we are carrying. Anyway, this is still a very respectable figure for such a large vehicle, and means it will easily travel 600 miles on a full tank. Equipped with both cruise control and a speed limiter it is easy to drive sedately. Travelling all the way to Suffolk gives me ample opportunity to put it through its paces. Driving rain and heavy winds are certainly challenging but the CR-V takes it all in its stride. The six speed manual box is a little clunky, but very precise, so no complaints. The front seats have ample lumbar support too, which is very welcome especially when staying in a holiday

cottage that has the most uncomfortable beds I have come across for some time giving me a prolonged and persistent backache. “... but more padding on the actual seat would be beneficial over a long journey,” suggests my wife. The CR-V has an enormous boot so we can travel with our tandem pushchair and still have plenty of room in the back for our two daughters and luggage. The useful rubber cover inside the boot means that no matter how filthy the pushchair is the inside of the boot remains clean, as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. It helps that there is a roof mounted mirror that lets the driver and passenger to check on the rear occupants (which is how we saw the antics of our daughters in the first place). The chunky tyres cope well with off-roading, not that I was expecting to do much of this, but in this part of the world there are a surprising number of potholes especially when approaching the plentiful free car parks near the coast such as at Aldeburgh and Walberswick. My wife and children would prefer softer suspension to soak up the bumps in such situations. The wing mirrors fold electrically and when reversing they drop automatically, if near a kerb, which is extremely helpful so that you don’t clip the kerb, not that it matters much with such large wheels. There is also a useful camera

for reversing, which appears in the central display. It’s equipped with all the usual mod-cons including air conditioning, all round electric windows and, much to my wife’s pleasure, heated front seats as you can also see in the video at testdrives.biz. Pearlescent paint, a £500 option, really sets this vehicle off and even those in much more expensive Range Rovers can’t help but take a second look. It’s a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde vehicle too because one minute it will be happily pottering around the quiet Suffolk country lanes and the next minute it will just as competently be travelling at speed in the outside lane of the motorway regardless of wind conditions. Its adaptability makes it an impressive family vehicle. New Restrictions to Improve Safety

The DGT has announced a range of measures they plan to implement this year, all aimed at reducing the number of fatalities and casualties from road traffic incidents. One of the measures announced is expressly aimed at protecting cyclists, after figures show an increase in the number of incidents involving bicycles. The plan is to restrict the maximum permitted speed on certain roads and on certain days, at times when there is a possibility of an increase in the number of cyclists using the routes, such as Sunday mornings, for example. Of course reducing the maximum speed limit still relies on the drivers adhering to the law and respecting the maximum speed limits, and so the risk is still an issue when drivers choose to ignore the law. Some cyclists of course should also be made more aware of similar responsible driving methods, also respecting the road and traffic law, laws which are designed to protect life, and it is not uncommon that motorists become frustrated at the seemingly selfish attitude of a small number of cyclists who also fail to practice respect. Stricter action against all road users will be an inevitable part of enforcing the restrictions, so whether motor-powered or leg-driven, traffic officers will be closely monitoring the roads looking for those who do offend. Another restriction which will form part of the future model will be restricting the movement of certain trucks on conventional roads which have become “black spots”, providing alternative routes for these vehicles away from the most dangerous sections. The information on these restrictions will be published on the DGT website, dgt.es, where new sections will be added periodically. Overall, the measures are aimed at creating a safer environment for all vehicles to co-exist on the roads of Spain, and with the increase in the number of fatalities and injuries on the roads, these are the first steps towards reversing that trend on the “Road to Zero” fatalities.
