It’s carnival time!

CARNIVAL SEASON is upon us here in Benidorm. This is an annual celebration and this year the main parade will be on Saturday 1st March.

But this proved too disruptive for the hotel guests and difficult for the film crew, so since then the pink house – just past Benidorm Palace, has been used as the set for the reception area of the fictitious Solana.

New casino for Benidorm THE PROGRESS on the new Benidorm Casino, located on the Avd Mediterraneo is astounding. The crane only went up on Christmas Eve but since then it´s been all stations go.

THE COMPLEX is part of the “Casinos del Mediterraneo” group, who already have two in the region - one at the port in Alicante and another in La Zenia Boulevard, on the Orihuela Costa.

Currently there are an army of workmen, clad in obligatory hard hats and reflective jackets on site, with a procession of cement lorries, delivering fresh batches of concrete daily. The completion and opening is planned for July, the beginning of the busy Summer season.

However, the premises will not only house a casino but will also serve as a cultural centre for the town. There will be an exhibition centre for local artists to display their works, a meeting area and a conference centre.

Within the casino there will also be a small restaurant similar to the one in Alicante, offering subsidized basic menus in addition to the extensive bar. The casino floor will have a comprehensive range of roulette and blackjack tables as well as electronic gambling machines, but remember that you have to be 18 plus and show photo ID to gain entry. It should be a great opportunity to get dressed up and re-enact the “Casino Royale” scene from James Bond!

English Cinema IF YOU want to catch an English language film while on holiday then head to the Cine Colci Rincon, which as the name suggests is located in the Rincon de Loix, on the Avd Zamora – the road opposite the Round Town Travel shop and just behind the private IMED Levante hospital.

There is an English version film on Monday through to Thursday (none on Friday, Saturday or Sunday) and they are shown twice a night, but times vary so check beforehand. The films change at the end of every week and entrance is 6.50€ except on Wednesday, when there is a special price of 5€. To find out what is on and the start time call the cinema on 965 853 859.

Practical information HERE IS some useful information to help make your holiday in Benidorm safe, worry free and a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

AIRLINE NUMBERS

If you need to contact the airline for any reason these are numbers based in Spain.

ALSA BUSES

This is the bus which runs to Alicante airport.

You can catch it from either the Avda Europa, outside the Europa Clinica or from the bus station. Departs hourly and on the hour from Avda Europa from 7am until 10pm – but there is NO bus at 9pm: costs 9.45€ one way.

BANKS

In Spain banks only open for half a day, so make sure you go in the morning. Normal opening hours are 8.15am till 2pm, no Saturday opening. All banks have an ATM with an option to change the language into English – press the ‘cambio idiomas’ option.

BRITISH CONSULATE This is located in Alicante – Edf Espacio, Rambla Mendez Nuñez, 6th Floor, Alicante 03002. Open Monday to Friday from 8.30am until 1.30pm. In an emergency contact 965 216 002: if you have lost or had your passport stolen you will need to go there to obtain an emergency travel document to get you back to the UK, which will take about two hours to process. It will only be valid for that one journey and costs approximately 120€.

BUSES

The local bus service is run by Llorente. You pay the driver and the cost is 1.50€ regardless of distance. Generally the buses run until midnight. The following buses, which all stop on the main Avd Mediterraneo, are probably the ones which you will find most useful - but with baggage you would need to take a taxi as you are not allowed to take luggage onto local public buses.

BUSINESS HOURS

Most large stores stay open all day but smaller independant shops, particularly in the Old Town will shut at 2pm for lunch then re-open at 5pm until 8pm.

Shops are normally closed on Sundays except for small food stores which open until 2pm.

CHEMISTS

In Spain they are called a ‘Farmacia’. There is a 24hour farmacia on the main Avd Mediterraneo and the staff speaks English. Many local farmacias close over the lunch period from 1.30, re-opening at 5pm. If you need any sort of medication, including asprin or paracetamol, you can only buy them here: supermarkets are not allowed to sell any kind of medicine.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

There are plenty of currency exchange bureau´s in Benidorm. You will need to show your passport the first time thenyou will receive a card to show for subsequent visits, so there is no need to carry your passport with you. Reputable establishments include Eurochange who have several branches, Sheila´s at the indoor market and Wine Barrel on the Avd Mediterraneo. Bank rates are not as good as the exchange bureau´s . Hotels offer the poorest rate so only use for emergencies.

DOCTOR

If you have your EHIC – European Health Insurance Card you are entitled to see the social security doctor free of charge in an emergency, but you must also present your passport with the card. There are two ‘Centro de Salud’ (health centres) in Benidorm you can attend: Rincon de Loix - On Avd Derramador near to the Indoor market Foiettes in the Old Town - Calle Venuzuela La Cala - Avda de Benisa

There is only one social security hospital covering Benidorm – the Hospital Marina Baixa, which is actually located in Villa Joyosa, a short distance from the centre of Benidorm (just past La Cala).

However, there are two private hospitals in the centre of Benidorm – you will have to pay for any treatment or you can use your travel insurance if covered.

REPORTING A CRIME

SATE The Foreign Tourist Assistance Office.

If you are unfortunate enough to become a victim of crime this is ideally where you should go to report it.

Located on the first floor of the Tourist Information Office, at the very end of the Poniente Beach in the Old Town. Open Monday to Friday from 9am until 9pm and from 10am until 2pm over the weekend.

They have interpreters on hand and the use of a telephone to call relatives and your insurance company free of charge.

Getting there with ALSA HIGH-VOLUME passenger traffic from Spain’s airports requires a reliable, frequent airport shuttle service to major cities, especially in the busy holiday season.

Every day between 59pm you will find a live band playing and a room packed full of like minded people – it´s an absolute delight to watch. Better still, there is no charge – just the cost of your drinks and any snacks you may wish to order. It is a very popular afternoon activity, so dust down those dancing shoes and head down to the Cafeteria Roman and give it a go!

It’s Carnival time!

CARNIVAL SEASON is upon us here in Benidorm and you will notice children walking to school in a strange combination of attire, such as odd socks, painted moustaches and fathers ties at the end of this month.

AND EVERY day they have to add another eccentric item. It all leads up to the main carnival parade which takes place across the whole of Spain on Saturday 1st March. The biggest and most famous is in Rio de Janeiro, but if you can´t stretch to that then Benidorm comes a close second!

Carnival is an annual celebration - the date is dictated by when Easter falls, which this year is very late. The parades always take place on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday (forty days before Easter and the beginning of Lent)– and as that falls on Wednesday 5th March it means that this years parade will be taking place on Saturday 1st March. There are two - a children´s one in the morning and main adult one in the evening, normally starting quite late (last years started

at 9.30pm). The procession starts at the top end of Calle Ruzafa (where the Crystal Park hotel is located) and heads down, ending up at the main Town Hall Square.

The entire route will be awash with locals and tourists jostling for pole position to see the amazing procession. Massive speakers are normally erected at regular intervals and the volume of the beat can be felt through the pavement – meaning it´s loud! Revelers take in the atmosphere, dancing and swaying, but many of the older spectators will be holding their fingers permanently in their ears to try and drown out the sound!

You will get to see a real mix of elaborate costumes – the Spanish certainly know how to dress up and party. So wrap up warm and head into the Old Town to join in the fun.

The Carnival finishes on Tuesday 4th March with the ritual “Burial of the Sardine”. This signals the beginning of Lent, when you are suppose to give up something you enjoy for 40 days! There will be a solemn procession, which begins at around 9.30pm, starting at Plaza Mayor, through the Old Town and ending up at the Poniente Beach, where the sardine is ceremoniously buried on the beach to signal the start of Lent.

She, together with her army of staff are responsible for 783 rooms across the two hotels. 476 of those are at the Sol Pelicanos - so at full capacity throughout the Summer, there can be somewhere in the region of 1500 guests staying there!

The rooms shown in the series are not actually the rooms of the Sol Pelicanos - they are from the apartment block overlooking the tennis courts behind the hotel. She finds it rather amusing that some of the British guests ask where the “Blow n´ Go” hair salon is - somewhat confusing the hotel staff who have no idea what they are on about as they had never seen the programme.

The pool at the back is where all the action takes place surprisingly she hardly ever has any complaints about it being out of bounds for the hotel guests. In fact, quite the opposite - many phone specifically asking if they will be filming before booking. They have in the past had many tourists walking in off the street trying to get round to the back, so now have a security guard at the door - it´s not fair on the paying hotel guests to have people traipsing through the sun loungers to try and get a look.

The pool bar is only open throughout the Summer months and everyone wants a picture taken there, sipping on a cocktail - Mateo has a lot to answer for. As well as the Benidorm series, two morning programmes have also been broadcast from there - “This Morning” in 2012 and “Daybreak” in 2011.

Mobility scooters, probably the most iconic thing associated with the series thanks to Madge, have a specially allocated parking area outside - none are allowed into the hotel itself. Surprisingly the Spanish are just as guilty of hiring out the scooters when not strictly necessary and are almost taking over from the Brits!

What gondolas are to Venice, mobility scooters are to Benidorm - but with the recently introduced new by-laws perhaps that will now all change….

Throwing a little light on the subject IN THE interests of economy and energy efficiency 1,680 bulbs have been replaced by LED lamps on Benidorm’s Paseo de Levante. It is expected that the investment in the new bulbs of 21,141€ will be recovered over two years. This year the Municipal Technician plans to implement an energy audit to monitor the performance of lighting levels in the city.

Improvements for Benidorm train service

THE 99-YEAR-OLD train line from Benidorm to Denia, in danger of closure for economic reasons, is to be transformed into a super modern transport system.

The Valencian regional government has announced that FGV, the rail company responsible for the line, will be allocated €43 million over the next six years for a total makeover to include a track update, improved bridges, renewed safety measures and brand new engines.

Part of the planned works will be the electrification of the current ‘diesel run’ service so that passengers no longer have to transfer at Benidorm on the Alicante to Denia route.

In 2013 around three quarters of a million passengers used this train to get to Altea, Calpe, Teulada, Gata and Denia, approximately 35% of those being tourists.

Valencian Communidad President Alberto Fabra said: “This demonstrates the potential value of the line and the importance of offering tourists a modern and efficient method of transport.”

Happy Campers VISITORS TO Benidorm, and they come in their thousands throughout the year, are spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation.

THERE IS something to suit all budgets and lifestyles here. You can opt a hotel – ranging from budget to luxury, Self Catering - apartment or villa or the other option is a campsite.

Much like hotels they differ vastly size and facility wise. Many drive over their own motorhomes or caravans and pitch up, like a home from home whilst others come and stay for a short holiday, opting to rent a fully equipped one or one of the wooden chalet bungalows available. All of the sites offer facilities such as an on site restaurant, supermarket, laundry area, purpose built toilet and shower blocks, swimming pools – both outdoor and a covered one for Winter use and have a club house with bar with nightly entertainment.

The comraderie is something which you won´t find anywhere but on a campsite and what makes it such an appealing way of life to many. Your only decision is which one to choose, which is generally a decision based on proximity to the centre of Benidorm and size of site. All of them are located on the Rincon de Loix side of town – the nearest being Villasol and La Torreta, which are very close to Benidorm Palace. Almafra is on the edge of Alfaz del Pi and Benisol is next to the very popular El Cisne rastro.

– it´s almost like a self contained holiday village followed by El Raco which has just under 600.

All of them are conveniently located on the number 10 bus route, which has a regular service between the centre of Benidorm and Altea. These are some of the many permanent all year round sites in the Benidorm area and a popular choice with Brits: Villamar ,Camping Benidorm, El Raco, Benisol, Villasol, La Toretta, Arena Blanca, Armanello and Almafra.

Caravanning Alicante show

FOR THOSE planning their holidays or looking for a weekend get-a-way, a great place to start is the Caravanning 2014 Exhibition, which takes place over the next two weekends at the IFA in Alicante, located close to the airport.

The show has become one of the major trade fairs in Spain, with advanced ticket sales and interest boding well for growth on the number of visitors and expectations in sales over last year. The fair is aimed at all audiences, because “the camping-caravanning scene is an interest-

ing option to be able to travel freely and to schedule your vacation; it’s a lifestyle,” said the president of ACYCA. In addition to the new exhibition, they are planning a concentration of caravans and motor homes in a parking lot, beside the main exhibition building.

2014 Caravaning Alicante will show the latest developments and innovations in all aspects of this tourism sector covering such areas as: Caravans, camper trailers, modules, prefabricated houses, camping items, camping associations,

For those of you who DON’T celebrate Valentine’s

THAT TIME of year is upon us once again when singles who are “happy” that way, the just divorced and the recently dumped folks can run around all day chucking things at all those ever so sickly loved up people.

WE SEE them everywhere, buying roses at three times the usual price, expensive chocolates for her indoors, despite her indoors still being on the post-Christmas diet and booking the last table for a something in a sauce (usually Chicken) and strawberries dinner at a very reasonable 35€ a head. Usually 17€ without the petals and hearts on the table.

Let´s face it, the 14th of February has become a huge commercial marketing frenzy for companies to grab some of our cash during the lean shopping and dining months following Christmas. It appears that there is a growing movement made of singles and unromantic couples (there are many) who see the day as a time for revolting rather than buying into the revolting over schmaltzy hearts, Teddies and pink or red flowers flown half way around the world to drop their petals by February 16th.

Here are few things you can do in Benidorm near the big day to show solidarity with the AntiValentine revolution.

1. Go for a meal with a friend to one of the many under a tenner Chinese restaurants in Benidorm and comment very loudly about how embarrassing it would be to take a loved one for a romantic meal to such a cheap place.

2. If you meet a romantic couple, join them and become that annoying breed of tourist who insists on becoming the third person (stalker) on what was supposed to be a couple only holiday. Even better if you can pull up a chair and join them for that special dinner later, takes

cunning to find out where they are dining but well worth the look of horror on their faces.

3. If you or your other half hate Valentine´s

day, say so with matching T shirts with a slogan like; “Nothing says “Your Special” like a mass-produced sentiment written by someone else” or a personal favourite “Valentine´s Day Stinks - Benidorm Pub Crawl – FOLLOW US” You will end up with many new friends.

4. Go in search of a Hen Party or Stag Party! This will keep you busy all day long and may require some serious drinking. If you do find any on Valentine´s Day, serious questions will need answering as to the wisdom of choosing the date to be away. Or maybe it is an Anti-Valentine Stag/Hen Party 5. Do absolutely nothing, enjoy a perfect day on the beach in the sunshine and look forward to a big night out in Benidorm. Avoid all the karaoke bars of course, they will be packed with people crucifying all the popular loves songs and we do not want any of that do we? The best day is yet to come February 15th is “discount chocolate day” when you can fill your boots with yummy mountains of unsold heart shaped boxes of chocolates at half the price. You can love the one you love every day, no need for a special day and half price chocolates taste so much better the day after too.

Shop ‘til you drop OLD TOWN

The Old Town is a great place to start. Calle Gambo, the pedestrianised street that begins at the Plaza Triangular, where the huge rubber tree is, has a great selection of popular boutiques such as Masimo Dutti – a must for fashion-savvy customers, and Zara, which is now everyone’s favourite High Street fashion hit: even the Duchess of Cambridge and Coleen Rooney want to be seen in this leading Spanish fashion brand.

The prices tend to work out cheaper here in Spain even taking into account the exchange rate, so it is certainly worth a visit. One well-known English name here and one you will be familiar with is Specsavers - the UK’s most popular opticians, run by Phillip, a British ex-pat.

Paseo de la Carretera is another must-do street and will take you all the way to Elche Park.

INDOOR MARKET

The Indoor Market in the Rincon de Loix offers a huge variety of independent shops and beauty salons. Don’t bother bringing heavy toiletries with you, pop along to Super Drogeria where you can purchase all the UK High Street brands with which you are familiar.

LA MARINA

La Marina Shopping Centre offers a broad selection of shops in an air conditioned environment. Known as ‘Centro Comercial La Marina’, it has shops and restaurants and even an entertainment complex on the top floor. C&A, a UK department store which disappeared from the UK High Street some years back, you will still find here – and particularly popular with visiting Brits.

Market – If you are a bargain hunter then you have hit gold in Benidorm where they hold a huge outdoor market not once but twice a week – every Wednesday and Sunday in the Rincon de Loix, next to the Hotel Pueblo. You will find a mind-boggling array of counterfeit designer sunglasses, watches and handbags as well as the usual market goods - clothes, shoes, jewelry, accessories, leather goods and obviously a fantastic selection of fresh fruit and veg. It will be extremely busy with people jostling you, so keep your bag and wallet close and leave the credit cards behind as they only take cash.

1 STAR BUDGET HOTELS Basic rooms with a bathroom or shower. Don’t expect a huge range of amenities such as lounge, pool, television, room telephone, safe or reception services.

Generally small rooms, many without balconies or sea views: although basic this can be a good option if on a budget weekend. You may be pleasantly surprised in this type of hotel if you ask to see your room before payment.

Expect dining to be simple Spanish meals with limited choice sometimes only on a bed and breakfast rate or room only.

Great for a cheap weekend: try the Mar Bella up by the Police Station.

2 STAR HOTELS Acceptable accommodation with en-suite rooms. Many will offer better services and a small pool. Rooms may have a television, air conditioning, bigger restaurant, better food with more choice, usually on a buffet basis. Many two star hotels in good sea front locations are unable to gain a 3star due to restraints with the building but do offer a 3-star service with good quality but smaller rooms. 3 STAR HOTELS Here you will get a larger hotel with better facilities such as TV games room, pool, gardens or sun terrace, 24 hour reception, lounge, separate bar. A restaurant with a wide choice of food served buffet style for breakfast through to dinner. Rooms will all be en-suite, usually with full bathroom

This is a good choice for couples and ideal for a low-season or mid-season holiday as less people are about. The hotel is obviously well run and

Better known to the Brits as ‘Dove Park’, it can be found at the beginning of Poniente Beach on the edge of the Old Town: a lovely, shady park area with plenty of palm trees. Here you can sit and ‘people watch’ with a massive population of white doves which you can feed – very popular with the Spanish.

The giant rock jutting out directly in front of the Levante beach is ap 4 km from the shore. You can catch a glass bottomed boat from the marina at Mal Pas which gives you some amazing views of the reef and fish then explore the wildlife and bird population on the island.

Located up in the Old Town, right at the top and often referred to as the Mirador. A little bit of a steep climb but well worth it when you see the beautiful panoramic views of both the bays. You can also access it from Mal Pas beach where there is a staircase which leads all the way up. A very pretty blue and white tiled gazebo with seating makes a lovely backdrop for a photo and the square has a selection of bars so you can take in the stunning scenery.

Tabarca Island THE ISLAND of Tabarca, sometimes called “Flat Island” is located just 3 miles off the cape of Santa Pola and takes about an hour to get there by boat.

THE ISLAND is the largest inhabited island in the Valencian Community and dates back to the 18th century. The island is 1750 metres long with a maximum width of 300 metres and is absolutely flat - hence its name and is a protected marine reserve. It is this that draws scuba divers and snorkellers here as they can swim amongst the vast marine life that surrounds the island. For the slightly less adventurous you can hire pedalo boats. There is only one village “Nova Tarbaca” which is home to aprox. 100 people. The main industry is fishing related but come the summer months the tourist industry thrives as its a very popular day trip.

You can catch a boat from the marina at Mal Pas, located in the Old Town which departs at 10.30am every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. You get to spend the day on the island before making the return journey at 17.30pm. Make sure you give yourself around 3-4 hours for a leisurely stroll around the island and pit stops for refreshments... there are 16 restuarants on the island - with fish being the dish of the day in most, as it is caught daily... or take a picnic - remember that you are a captive audience on the island !

TAPAS ALLEY

If you are fed up of pie & chips and fancy a taste of the real Spain then head to Calle Santo Domingo – better known to all as “Tapas Alley” in the Old Town. The tapas are displayed behind glass and you can walk up and down pointing to whatever takes your fancy - the prices vary depending on which ones you choose but are generally between 1.50€ and 2.50€.

VIEWPOINT AT GRAN HOTEL BALI

If you want to see Benidorm from a different perspective then pop to the Gran Hotel Bali in La Cala where you can go up to the panoramic view point on the 43rd floor - in a glass lift! Open from 11.00am until 13.30pm then again from 15.30pm until 21.30pm there is a 6 euros charge for non-residents, but you do get a drink at the viewpoint bar included – chlldren under 12 go free (1 per adult).

PONIENTE PROMENADE

The brand new Poniente Promenade is the envy of every seaside resort and runs from the Old Town down towards La Cala. The promenade took over two years to complete and cost near on 20 million euros - but much of that was funding from the EU. The innovative multi coloured wave design won an architectural award and definitely worth seeing.

TERRA NATURA

More of a wildlife park than a zoo, with three zones: America, Asia and Europe and you can see animals native to those Continents living within their natural environment with shrubs and plants from their natural habitat. There are plenty of interactive activities going on throughout the day such as feeding the animals and for the more adventurous you can even Zip Wire across a 400metre stretch above the elephant plain.

THE CROSS ON THE HILL

A Benidorm landmark situated on the Sierra Helada mountains in the Rincon. The cross was erected in the 1950´s by residents and is 8 metres tall. A popular walk route taking ap 45 mins each way with breath taking views of the town.

Terra Natura TERRA NATURA wildlife park in Benidorm is a must when here. The 32 hectare park is divided up into 3 zones; America, Asia and Europe so comfortable walking shoes are essential! Animals and plants typical of each continent can be seen within each region, making it not only an enjoyable visit but also an educational learning experience. Various boat departures for an adventurous day out. From here you can catch the hourly glass bottomed boat to Benidorm Island which departs from 10am until 5pm. Or try the mini cruise to Calp which takes you on a picturesque tour of the coast, passing by Albir, Altea and some small hidden coves – a daily service departing Benidorm at 11.30am and returning from Calpe at 4.30pm. For the more adventurous how about a boat trip to Tabarca Island, sometimes referred to as ‘Flat Island’.

known landmark in the town. It has been a permanent fixture there for the last three years and can accommodate 850 people. The tent is totally wheelchair friendly with the installation of ramps for easy access to the ringside, with heating and air conditioning to ensure a comfortable evening.

There are NO animals in any of the performances - the show is based around a dramatic mix of traditional circus acts but also incorporates highly skilled performers.

In total there are 45 dancers and performers training three times a week for the weekly show: every Saturday evening starting at 6pm.

It is really easy to get to there: if driving the best place to head for is Benidorm Palace - then take the road almost opposite and it will take you all the way there - about a 2 minute drive. Parking is free. Or catch a public bus - either the number 1 or 11 - to take you straight to the entrance - but if there are four of you it will probably work out the same to take a taxi, especially if you are coming from Benidorm.

Rincon de Loix THE AREA often referred to as The Rincon is part of what is deemed the ‘New Town’, probably the most popular location with British holidaymakers.

IT IS certainly the life and soul of the resort and where you will find all the nightlife.

The vast, sandy beach is lined with bars and restaurants which are lively to say the least. You will definitely find all your home comforts here such as all day British breakfasts, UK television in most bars and fantastic value food and drink.

During the day you are spoilt for choice of activities. Here you will find Aqualandia, the biggest waterpark in Spain and Mundomar, a marine animal park, both at the far end and next door to each other. For the adventurous there is the cable water ski which is found at the beginning of the Levante beach – great for adrenalin junkies.

One of the most breath taking views to be had of resort must be from the top of the Sierra Helada, often referred to as ‘The Hill’. Many holidaymakers trek up to the top, where you will find a Benidorm landmark: The Cross… just be aware that it’s a good 45-minute trek to the top!

Terra Mitica theme park is a great day trip with its

exciting rides and shows, suitable for the entire family and not far away you will find Wildlife Park Terra Natura and beside it Aqua Natura, a smaller waterpark more suited for younger children. For golfers, the magnificent Villaitana golf course offers two 18-hole courses with a view of the Benidorm skyline.

Every Saturday night and held all year round is The Circus. Starting at 6pm and located behind Benidorm Palace, you will be captivated for over two hours (children are not compulsory to attend!)

And for a first class night out you cannot beat Benidorm Palace – probably the most visited attraction in Benidorm and you are guaranteed a night to remember with its magnificent show. The Rincon is where you will find all the cabaret bars and nightclubs, open well into the early hours.

Poniente/La Cala STARTING AT Parc del Elche in the Old Town, generally referred to as Dove Park due to the hundreds of white doves, is Poniente beach, which runs for more than 3km and finishes at La Cala. The promenade, which runs along the entire length of the beach, won an architectural award for its innovative multicoloured wave design and is certainly worth seeing. This side of Benidorm is much quieter, so great if you just want to relax and unwind.

At the far end of Poniente you will find La Cala – which technically belongs to the town of Finestrat but everyone refers to it as Benidorm. The skyline is dominated by two buildings – the Gran Hotel Bali and the newly constructed ‘Intempo’ twin towers, with its gold clad frontage, rumoured to be the tallest residential building in Europe.

The Old Town

THE OLD Town is located between the Levante and Poniente beaches, a far cry from the ‘British Square’ in the Rincon, that people associate with Benidorm.

This area is like stepping back in time – full of narrow, cobbled streets adorned with white washed houses and an abundance of boutiques, bars and restaurants.

Head toward the blue-domed church and at the top you will arrive at the lookout point, or Mirador as the locals would say. The climb up to the top is certainly worth it for the wonderful view of both bays. On your way back down, stop off at the famous Tapas Alley – which as the name suggests is a street full of tapas bars. If you are fed up with pie and chips and fancy a real taste of Spain, this is where you should go.

The Old Town is also where you will find the Gay quarter – hugely popular for an alternative night out. A visit to the Rich Bitch Showbar and Kaffe Klee are a must if you appreciate drag humour and the many gay bars make everyone feel welcome and comfortable.

Mal Pas beach is located in the Old Town and it is from this harbour that you can catch a boat to both Tabarca Island and Calpe, great days out.

A Day Trip to Benissa SET IN the heart of the Marina Alta, just a thirty minute journey by coach from Benidorm, you will find the littleknown and yet very historical town of Benissa.

Guadalest

SET AT 595m above sea level, the village of Guadalest hangs precariously to the mountain top and is rated as one of the most visited villages in Spain; and with good reason. Dating back to the 8th Century, Guadalest is now home to just over 200 residents who invite you to step back in time and explore their fabulous village.

Guadalest was built by the Moors and stood as a fortified city until it was conquered by the Christians in the middle of the thirteenth century, turning the Moorish stronghold, into their own gaol. In June of 1644 a devastating earthquake destroyed the Castle of Guadalest who´s ruins can still be seen and the dungeon in the old village gaol offers an eerie silence to those who enter.

Steeped in history and being the cause of many battles, Guadalest now has more of a tranquil life. With its whitewashed houses and cobbled streets, Guadalest has become as famous for its arts, crafts and museums as it has its long and twisted history.

Set on Two levels, the lower of which is the newer part and is a maze of, cafes, bars & craft shops and museums, which are definitely worth a visit. To access the higher part, you need to pass through the mountain that has been carved out making an entrance to the old fortified village. Guadalest offers stunning picturesque views of the surrounding landscape and turquoise blue reservoir that supplies lower towns, villages and even Benidorm with its supply of fresh water.

How to get there?

There are paid excursions that depart Benidorm most days of the week and this is one of the best ways to see Guadalest as you will be accompanied by an English speaking guide who will point out points of interest to you and most offer discounted entrance tickets to the museums and other places of interest when there. For the more adventurous traveller, you can catch the number 16 bus that departs Benidorm at 10:15 each day and will take just over an hour to get there. But remember, there is only 1 bus up and 1 bus back which leaves at 1:30 giving you approx 2 ½ hours in the village if you take this option.

The Muscat grape that produces the wine is also used to make raisins. Jalon is not just famous for its wines though. The valley is lined with Almond trees and in February and March when the trees blossom the sea of pink & white blossom that covers the valley draws people by the coach load to see the beautiful sight.

On a Saturday Jalon plays host to one of the oldest and largets “rastros” (car boot sales) of the Costa that draws people from afar to rummage through the goods and antiques on sale and is also home to one of the finest British “Fish & Chip” shops to be found in this region.

HOW TO GET THERE? Jalon is easily found by car, taking the N332 North, towards Calpe and then continuing inland towards Benissa before turning off into the Valley itself and will take approximately 40 minutes. Although Jalon is not on any of the major bus routes from Benidorm, due to its popularity, it does feature as a stop on many of the excursions that leave Benidorm daily and during the blossom period you can also find specific trips that take in the sights.

From yummy Cupcakes to Adidas Fakes‌ BENIDORM SUNDAY and Wednesday Market has it all and more.

THE VAST market located on the edge of Benidorm in the Rincon de Loix and it is vast, offers everything you could want in a bargain basement sort of way! Even the most demanding deal conscious shopper should find plenty of happy stall holders willing to exchange your Euros for some look-a-like designer gear or a cheap handbag or two!

There is more to the infamous Benidorm market than meets the eye. This is no ordinary market place, here you can enjoy a good few hours putting to rest those animal hunting instincts we all have and forage for treats to eat, clothes to wear and sneak up on some bargain booty hidden among row after row of stalls.

Of course there are the staple stalls found in every market such as long established fruit and veg businesses and sellers of pic-n-mix nuts, dried fruits and olives galore. If cheap leather is your thing and brown is your colour! You will find a dozen stalls retailing 50 shades of brown coats, bags, shoes, belts of course and even leather hats just like the traveller community wear.

At the back of the market are the cafeteria bars, which you will need after seemingly endless miles of walking up and down the market in the search of those special offers. Enjoy burgers, beers and even Cupcakes or just a coffee then sit and watch the world go by.

Benidorm market is like Woolworth used to be, pile it high and sell it cheap. They certainly do and despite a number of stalls arguably selling mainly tatty stuff, if you are keen eyed and enjoy a good routing there are many genuine bargains to be found. Even the fake Adidas appear quite well made and would probably fool Adidas! And those Cupcakes are quite delicious.

Whatever your impression, Benidorm market has been around almost as long as Benidorm and is a must visit place either on Wednesday or Sunday. There is a great atmosphere, it is busy and almost everyone seems to leave with arms full of carrier bags. Get there early and remember it is all over by 2pm. Keep a keen eye on your valuables as there are always a few Artful Dodger types willing to pick a pocket or two!

Our Quacking reporter takes a flying visit to CALA PONIENTE the perfect beach to be alone!

ONE OF the things that remains unchanged in Spain are the weekly street markets. Decades ago these were even common in England, but with the advent of “Out of Town” shopping centres such as Westfield in London, Trafford Centre in Manchester and Meadowhall in Sheffield these have all but disappeared. However, in Spain they are still popular and almost every village or town has one. Below is a list of local markets:

MONDAY - LA NUCIA

At the far end of town in the square opposite the auditorium, but rather difficult to get to without a car.

TUESDAY - ALTEA

Take the number 10 bus to the last stop and the market is on the next street – just follow the crowds.

WEDNESDAY - BENIDORM

Head towards the Hotel Pueblo and give yourself plenty of time if you want to see everything!

There is also a market in the Old Town, located just behind the tram station.

THURSDAY - VILLA JOYOSA / EL CISNE

The bus service to Villa Joyosa is rather limited but it is worth visiting this beautiful town.

Alternatively, El Cisne is a very popular flea market if you like to rummage and the bus stops right outside.

FRIDAY - ALFAZ DEL PI & LA CALA

Alfaz has a great fruit and veg section at the far end and conveniently, the trusty number 10 will drop you off right at the start of the market. La Cala market is located not far from the Carrefour hypermarket in Finestrat and you can catch the number 2 bus from the centre of Benidorm to get there.

SATURDAY - LA CALA VERY FEW visitors ever treat themselves to a stroll from the old town harbour to the far end of the Playa Poniente and the fabulous area known as Cala Poniente.

On the very edge of town beyond the new curvy wavy promenade. Starting from the hotel Delfin, you will find peace and quiet and a very different atmosphere of calm relaxation impossible to find at the other end of Benidorm.

THE SANDS It is out of season and apart from the odd Duck, a few locals and some assorted old Birds who have migrated south from northern Europe for the winter! You will most likely be quite alone to enjoy “strolling along the prom prom prom”, as the song goes.

With the headland offering plenty of shelter from the winter breeze even in February it can get pretty warm. When the sun has got it´s hat on you will find great sunbathing until mid-afternoon. Even a paddle is possible but a swim would be pushing it this time of year, however, if you do, be warned that the locals will think you are quite mad.

THE FOOD There is an excellent choice of places to eat overlooking the sands such as the Delfin hotel terrace for drinks and snacks, the Va Bene (excellent) Pizzeria, or the café bar Nevada Beach for a menu of the day for a tenner or coffee and cake on the way back!

No holiday is complete without venturing through the old town and along the Poniente. The whole area has certainly much improved over the last few seasons.

There are some great bars along the way and even some new shops too! Proper shops, not just the touristy type. If you are a regular and have not taken a stroll in that direction for a few visits, make some time one afternoon, you will be pleasantly surprised. You may even bump into Duckie! – ENJOY. UB40 are coming to town!

WHATEVER YOUR taste in music, two of the most iconic songs that virtually everyone will know are “Bat out of Hell” and “Dead Ringer” – both power rock ballads by Meat Loaf and which you can hear right here in Benidorm.

The “Meatloaf Benidorm” singing duo are made up of Simon Ruston and Lesley Ann Cawood – both experienced and highly professional performers on the Benidorm entertainment circuit.

Simon, a London boy was a professional singer back in the UK and gigged as part of a rock band from the tender age of 15 – even touring across New York State in his late teens. The pair have been performing together for two years and are exclusive to the Touch of Class group, with regular slots at Jokers and Sinatra´s. They put on a full theatrical show lasting 50 minutes and try to inject comical banter and tongue in cheek humour with the audience… with Simon even referring to himself as the fat bald bloke with wig and frilly shirt! But the pair give 110% regardless of whether there are a few dozen people or a full house watching and always take the time to speak to their fans after the show. It has to be one of the most high energy shows in town and many who have been even say Simon is better than Meat Loaf himself – the pair are certainly a fitting tribute to the maestro.

The Prospectors Duo WHEN YOU think of quality Country music you automatically think of The Prospectors Duo, but they don’t only play country, they have many strings to their bow. Comprising of Pete Woodward (Guitar, Mandolin, Violin and Vocals) and Nick Carter (Guitar and Vocals) The Prospectors first hit Benidorm in 2009 with their unique mix of Country, Irish and Rock Music.

Although from very different backgrounds, Pete and Nick have been friends for more than15 years, playing together since they first went to the Costa del Sol in 2005. They quickly built up a huge following with the ex-pat community, many of whom still follow them on-line via their Facebook page. However, living apart from their significant others soon proved to be too much and the guys returned to the UK where they continued to play, recording a couple of albums and planning their return to Spain.

They arrived in Benidorm in 2009 and soon established themselves as a quality musical act, appearing at The Tropical, Tiki Beach, Western Saloon and The Red Dog among other

venues. Their reputation soon grew beyond Benidorm, and they often headline at Music Festivals as far afield as Murcia, Almansa and Calpe. With all the energy and excitement of life on stage, they both like to kick back and spend their time off enjoying the Spanish lifestyle they moved here for, living a quiet life in the country with their respective partners, dogs, cats, ducks etc.

So what does the future hold for The Prospectors?

Well they are just putting the finishing touches to a new show – Costa Quo, a tribute to Status Quo, so keep a look out around the pubs and clubs of Benidorm and get ready to go ‘Rocking all over the World’.

You can see The Prospectors Duo at Tiki Beach every Monday and Wednesday at 11.30am or at The Western Saloon every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 4pm.

Peggy’s back!

International Queen of Comedy WHAT CAN you say about Peggy that’s not already been said...!

The ‘International Queen of Comedy’, Peggy is also affectionately dubbed the ‘Travelling Tranny’.

She is welcomed on stages all over the UK and Europe but will be back at Benidorm’s Kafee Klee for a oneoff, take-no-prisoners performance on 5th March, ‘The Only Way is Wessex’, a sharp-witted bombshell of a show guaranteed to keep you in stitches.

Kafee Klee is ranked in the top ten Benidorm nightspots and a favourite for drag entertainment in the Old Town.

Peggy will be back for ‘Pink’ weekend on 16th, 17th & 18th May to perform and also to host the fun at one of Benidorm’s most popular party fests, and again for the whole of September and October.

A delight for your taste buds Gastronimcal week Benidorm WITH THE resort attracting more foreign tourists each year it is essential to focus attention on the things that the town does well - and cuisine comes high on the list.

The Town Hall and Tourism associations have joined forces to promote and enhance the local catering industry and together they are endeavoring to highlight that Benidorm is, to some, an undiscovered food heaven.

In order to establish itself as a centre of gastronomic excellence, a calendar of food events is taking place throughout the course of the year. The first of these takes place this month, starting on Monday 17th and ending on Sunday 23rd February – “Jornadas de la Cuchara”, loosely translated to “Hot Dish days”.

16 restaurants are taking part in this week long extravaganza with the aim of showcasing a broad spectrum of hot cuisines available here, ranging from traditional to modern but based on local recipes.

On each day of the week the participating restaurants will offer a different 3 course menu with half a bottle of wine for a set price of 20 euros – with some also including coffee. It is certainly something to consider if you would like to try some elaborate and skillfully prepared food that is artfully presented - sometimes its a shame to actually eat the dish as it looks so beautiful!

You can get a booklet from the tourist information centre which will list all participating restaurants and the menu of what they are offering on each day - there is also a map on the inside back cover to show you the location of each.

THE FOOD at the Two Palms restaurant has always been highly rated, now with an all new look to the decor, it just gets better!

THE FOOD The food at the Two Palms Restaurant tucked away in Calle La Palma, just off the walking street in Old Town Benidorm, has always received great ratings.

Over the years though the decor had become a bit tired admits John, Chef and owner of the restaurant, so, at the end of November last year he took the plunge and closed down for a refurbishment and what a difference!

With softer wall colourings and coverings the restaurant now has a much cosier and warmer feel to it, whilst also appearing more spacious. New furniture and artwork have really made a huge difference to the ambience. Customer feedback and comments have all been really positive says John.
