Co-ordinators Cottage Catch Up Greetings everyone! Last Saturday (15/9) looked so much like we were going to get rain, but alas all we got was wind and plenty of it! Being a Western Australian and from the Pilbara, even after 13 years, I still find Victoria’s weather patterns baffling and I know I am not the only one… hehehe! We have been very busy here at The Cottage with everyone coming out of hibernation, 191 people through the doors in August and September is proving to be even busier.

We had our AGM on Monday the 17th and what a wonderful turn out we had and a huge thank you to the Committee members who have left us and a very warm welcome to all new members. Irene will report on this with detail, so please keep on reading what is proving to be another marvellous edition of the Gazette. Thank you Irene. Our annual Open Gardens festival preparation is in full swing with Loraine leading her dedicated team of gardeners in the final flourish. Do not forget to pencil in the 28th of October. Another service we are now able to extend on is individual IT support. We have a new volunteer on board, welcome Steele who is proving to be a whizz bang on the technology front. This week he has assisted the seniors in negotiating IPad and helped an individual access the internet on her laptop and set-up a Facebook page. The Annual General meeting of the Girgarre Community Group Inc. (GCG) was held on Monday 17 September.

Following the preliminary reading of reports. Mayor of the Shire of Campaspe, Cr Adrian Weston took the Chair for the election of Office Bearers for 18/19 assisted by Cr Vicki Neale.

Cr John Zobec was also present.

The General Meeting that followed decided there would be no joining fee for membership of the GCG and that from the next Annual General Meeting there will be seven committee members instead of the current nine. CELEBRATING OUR SENIORS - VICTORIAN SENIORS FESTIVAL - OCTOBER 18 We have many very active Seniors in our local and district community. They are the lynch pin that holds many of the activities and wonderful events here in Girgarre together. What motivates them? Well, may we ask… Below is a Q and A with Bernie Ryan, one among many of our most active seniors.

Bernie has a wonderful story about his walking trip across Spain on page 5.

Q: Bernie, as a very active Senior, what motivates you to do these ‘extreme’ trips that you undertake every couple of years, mostly on foot?

B: I have always been an active person, into community and sport and I like to keep fit. I feel as we get older we need activities that keep us interested in life. I am now 77 years old and my health is good. I like to keep involved.

Q: On this trip to Camino de Santiago de Compostela, did you meet many interesting people, locals or fellow travellers?

B: Not so many locals this time, my fellow travellers were mostly young folk on this walk, which I like. They gave me the nick name ‘Super’ and watched out for me at rest stops as I did for them, my experience counts too. Young people are a great motivation – you get back what you give when you engage with them. Also, you cannot but help make friends on such a trip, we are all doing the same thing and we share a lot as we go. I now have friends from all over the world who

keep in touch by email. It is one of the lovely things about what I do. I met three from Budapest, Hungary this trip and I’ve been invited to join them on a walk through that country sometime in the future.

Q: What were your feelings when you reached the Cathedral at Santiago?

B: The walk was over 600 kms. I felt emotional because of the challenges along the way. In 2005 I undertook the longer 800+ kms walk, the Camino France, St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago. This time on arrival in Santiago I chose not to enter the Cathedral as I did in 2005. There are now so many pilgrims waiting to go in you have to queue. I felt the spiritual nature of it would be lost by being so crowded, there were not so many people last time. Instead of the Cathedral, we went to a Tapas bar and reflected on our trip.

Q: Of all your walks, Machu Picchu in Peru, Cuba, Base Camp at Mt Everest and across Turkey to Gallipoli which of these do you think of as your best, the one that stays with you the most?

B: I think it was the 800 Km walk from France to Spain in 2005, although I have fond memories of all of them.

Q: Do you have any last thoughts you would like to share?

B: I like the old saying of Albert Camus ‘Do not walk in front of me, I may not follow. Do not walk behind me, I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend’. I think it sums it up nicely. ‘Walking with Bernie’ story page 5

WALK WITH BERNIE THE CAMINO de SANTIAGO COMPOSTELA IN SPAIN The Camino de Santiago Compostela is based on the route that St James the Great, the Patron Saint of Spain walked some 900 years ago, preaching the gospel to the pagan people and converting then to Christianity.

Much of the route follows the original Roman military road that connected Portugal with Spain then into France 2000 years ago. I walked along some of these roads and crossed over some of their famous arch design bridges, finding it hard to comprehend the age of these constructions that were still in excellent condition.

On St James’ return to Jerusalem he was beheaded by Herod Agrippa; two of St James’ disciples smuggled the body out of Jerusalem and his remains now lie under this amazing cathedral in Santiago De Compostela and it is where the Camino finishes. It has since become popular with Pilgrims from all lands who retrace his steps to pray and ask for guidance. The total distance I walked was 650 kilometres starting at the Basilica in Lisbon and ending the Camino in Santiago, taking 21 days.

The Camino can be divided into two stages from Lisbon to Port-Porto to Santiago. The stage from Lisbon to Porto is not as popular as the second stage, there are not so many places to stay at and it is not as well marked. For several days I walked by myself but feeling quite safe, it was a great time to reflect on my life and the days were never boring as there was so much to see and experience.

Before leaving Australia, I purchased a small book by John Brierley “Camino Portuguese” which proved to be of great assistance. It gave me details of the distance between the villages I passed through, where I could purchase food and water; also the cafés and bars that served lunch; the gradients I would climb on the day and where I would find a Hostel Orperigrinas to stay for the night.

The Camino is marked with a yellow arrow pointing towards Santiago. These arrows can be found on light-posts, fences, buildings and edges of roads, so concentration was needed. If I was unsure which way to go when I came to a junction of three or four roads the book was of great assistance, giving a description of a building; a clump of trees or an interesting rock formation that I should be passing.

Being a pilgrim has advantages. Pilgrims were well provided for with a menu of soup, bread, salad, fruit and some-

thing to drink. Good wholesome food costing between $6 and $8. Accommodation was in hostels or Perigrinas. These are dormitory type rooms with four to eight double bunk beds. Something I found out early on the Camino is that I can no longer get up onto the top bunk, but it was never a problem as I seemed to be the oldest person walking the Camino at that time and the young people were very considerate.

The cost of a bed was between $5 and $8 and most had good hot showers. Well appreciated after a long 10-12 hours of walking.

My day would start around 5am with breakfast of food I had purchased the night before. Once again, basic but wholesome. Always bread, maybe cheese, salami, tomatoes or snack bars and as I only drink water I did not have to be concerned about coffee etc. The reason I was starting so early was the weather. By early afternoon the Camino could reach 42°, so I liked to be in a village for the evening by 34pm if possible.

I divided my walking time into three-hour intervals for a couple of reasons. For a short rest to take the boots off and air my feet and, if it was really hot, change my socks and take off my pack to let the air get at my back. Blisters are a big fear in the heat, making walking very difficult if they happen.

My pack was very light, just 10kg as I carry only basic needs, socks, jocks, extra pair of shorts, T-shirt, towel, light rain coat and not much else.

A highlight of the trip was the architecture and age of some of the cathedrals and churches I passed along the Camino. They were very thought provoking, one such castle ‘Tomar’ was simply mind blowing. Founded in 1160 by Gualdim Pais of the Order of the Knights Templar, the castle absorbed part of a Muslim settlement dating back to the 9th century. The protecting wall running around the perimeter of the castle was an amazing feat of engineering. As you walked from room to room inside the Conento of the DeCistro (pictured postcard) there was intricate carved workmanship on so many of the huge pillars holding up the walls and archways. These rooms were also enormous and were where the knights would hold their meetings. When the Order of the Knights Templar was disbanded in 1319 the castle was transferred to the Portugal Order of Christ, becoming their headquarters in 1357. It is now the most popular tourist attraction in Tomar for thousands of visitors each year.

Supporting your community car The first month of spring has produced typically unpredictable weather, from beautiful sunshine one day to gale force winds the next. The only element barely experienced it seems are the soaking rains we’ve been looking forward to.

In September the gnomes commenced propagating African Daisies, Scabiosa and planted native Frangipani and Indian Hawthorn seeds. Now is the time to sharpen up your secateurs and start removing frost affected foliage from Salvias, Pelargoniums and Cannas. Apply fertiliser to promote new growth and encourage flowering.

The vege patch could do with a turn over and a top dress.

Don’t forget Green Thumbs have bags of Biomix compost for sale, reasonably priced at $2.50. Just the thing to push those veggies along. Carefully consider when and what to plant to be ripe for picking in mid autumn.

It’s advisable to allow the soil to warm up before planting tomatoes. You might try staggering planting times to enable you to utilise part of your crop and extend the growing season for the rest. Of course pumpkins are popular and an obvious choice with many varieties from which to choose including Worlds Biggest, Butternuts, Tri-amble, Jap to list a few. More tips next month .

It was no split second, or one off misjudgement on Speedy’s part that left him severely injured with multiple broken bones and in coma for seven weeks. Thinking he was “Superman” and “invincible”, as he says about himself with typical humour, he ignored a series of incidents that should have served as a warning about alcohol and violence while under the influence. He was so drunk at a party to celebrate a new job that he has no memory of falling from a second

Well, not one to give in to such overwhelming adversity, Speedy dismissed the predictions of the Doctors and worked hard at rehabilitation to the point where he can now swing his left arm and not only walk without a brace or assistance but can drive a modified car. He spent years healing; learning how to speak and swallow so that he could eat normal food, and then in rehab learning to do such simple things as tying a shoelace or how to prepare food with only one functioning hand. He now goes to a gym regularly, using fasting and hard exercise to continue improving movement and flexibility. His message is Simple – make Good Choices, it’s in your hands.

Girgarre Development Group Notes 25 September Meeting Biodigester—Ian Bertram (Managing Director of Resource Resolution) reported that he has had a visit from the EPA to inspect his site re his application to construct a bio-digester.

Once a licence is obtained Ian believes the plant will be functioning within 12 months.

Solar Farm—Peter Leeson reported that all is on target for the solar farm to commence in the new year .

ACM — Works involving Vic Roads will commence next week to create access for trucks to the factory and that two silos have been delivered and all equipment except the butter machine is now on site.

Junkestra— A gathering of over 20 Junkestra players was held earlier this month. Graeme is up to his armpits in organs—no pun intended—he is creating another piece of work involving four organs that he intends to make a show out of and tour it around England. Graeme has been communicating with Wallace Williams re the new Piano Piano and he is most impressed with the video Wallace sent over to England recently.

Small Halls—Small Hall Festival will be returning to Girgarre on Friday 5 April 2019. This will be our first international band performance in the beautiful Soundshell.

Jigarre Jammin’ - A record crowd of attendees enjoyed a most successful weekend of jamming and performing. Campers started to arrive Thursday afternoon and enjoyed great weather, good company, plenty of music and a wonderful harmony singing workshop on Saturday morning, a great jamming session.

Market—Bill Casey reported a most successful market with over 50 sites sold. A beautiful day brought out a great crowd to enjoy the market and the weather. Most stall holders had an excellent day. The next two markets should be even better with Moama operating on a different Sunday to ours. New market signs were placed at Kyabram town entrances.

Friends of the Gardens—Marlene Rodrick reported that the eastern side of the perimeter in the gardens has been

replanted and watered and that a working bee next week will see the southern side completed. This will see the end of works other than weeding, mulching and watering until next autumn.

Recreation Reserve— Greg Fitzpatrick reported that the August chook auction saw 300 plus lots sold in record time (the volunteers were in a big hurry to the footy finals in Stanhope). Greg also reported that ground coring and vertical drainage was taking place on the arena.

RSL –Rob Axen reported that planning is continuing for Remembrance Day. They are waiting on a grant to further upgrade the building.

CFA—George DiBattista reported that all has been quiet on the fire front and that the fire brigade has attended two training sessions in Tongala and Rochester.

Tennis club—Duncan Rodrick reported that the Annual Meeting had been held with himself returned as President / Treasurer. This year will see one senior and four junior teams take to the courts.

Bush Dance—A near packed hall enjoyed an evening of good food courtesy of Bernie Ryan (his apple pie is always a hit) and the RSL did a terrific job of serving and waiting on tables.

John Russell, our new dance caller from Undera, had the dance floor full of enthusiastic dancers dancing to the music of the Billabong Bushies Band.

Diversified Growers—Duncan Rodrick reported that the next meeting of the group will be held this Saturday at Adrian and Simone’s farm. The discussion will centre around grants for Landcare use.

Landcare– Bernadette Fitzpatrick reported that the Annual Meeting of the Stanhope Girgarre Landcare Group will take place on October 30 in the Memorial Hall at 7pm.

BOWLED OVER - BRONZE TO THE KY P-12 BOWLERS Taking on NSW and Victoria’s best high school students in a three day lawn bowls tournament, a super team of Ky P -12 Bowlers (Olivia Cartright, Ben Fletcher and Josh Locke) came in with a first, making them best in the state. Ten days later, with two additional team members (Josh Cartwright and Austin Baker) they went head to head with NSW at the Darebin Bowls Club in Thornbury.

The end of the first day events sorted out the teams. The finals starting with the last game of the second day. At the end of the second day, the local team scraped into third place, taking home the bronze medal. On the third and final day, they were unsuccessful but came home with great memories and plenty of motivation to go back and win next year.

The Girgarre Recreation Reserve held their AGM on Wednesday 26th September. President Greg Fitzpatrick thanked all committee members for their contributions & commended the user groups for how well they work together.

We would like to give Greg a huge thank you for all of his work as President over the past 10 years or so; he steps down leaving the group in a fantastic position. He hasn’t gone far however, now taking on the role of Vice President as a support to new President Darren Butler. Fiona Smith & Tenealle Nicholson continue as Treasurer & Secretary respectively.

We welcome new committee members anytime. Meetings are held quarterly on the last Wednesday of the month, 7.30pm at the Girgarre Recreation Reserve Clubrooms. The next meeting will be Wednesday 28th November.

COMMUNITY - Seniors Looking Back 4th September: Last week we went travelling to Nagambie to have lunch at the Nagambie Rowing Club. A beautiful setting overlooking the lake made all the better by the glorious weather. The food was lovely with two fifteen dollar options; option one soup and main and option two main and dessert. Great value for money and very tasty. Two of our ladies had a nice little tipple-a sneaky gin and squash. And Hetty, our oldest member was very enthusiastic about the outing as she enjoys driving around and exploring the country side. Before we left Nagambie, we did some shopping and took in the sights.

On our way home, we decided to come back via Kirwan’s Bridge, a few pensive moments were had as we debated the weight of the bus for the bridge load capacity…don’t panic we made it! We have been noticing that our Seniors are really enjoying the simpler things in life, a nice day, with good company and pleasant scenery is ticking all of the boxes. Spring is on the way.

11th September: Last week we stayed in-house. The plan was to play bingo, but we became way-laid when we received numerous news items; The Seniors Paper, the Girgarre Gazette and the Victorian Seniors Festival Program booklet. So much to do and so little time October is going to be a very busy month! After discussing all that is on offer, we moved on to the topic of knitting, as two of our seniors were knitting up a storm during our chats. Debra, our volunteer seniors coordinator was in and out –busy in the kitchen. We were all very impressed with our lunch, salted pork belly pieces, served with sautéed cabbage, roast pumpkin and potatoes. Dessert was a mixed bag of drumsticks, frozen yogurt and a selection of cheeses. Next week we are off to Merry Melodies in Shepparton, doesn’t that once a month trip come around quickly?

18th September: Heading off to our regular monthly Merry Melodies in Shepparton we were serenaded by one of Girgarre’s locals, Dale. With his trusty guitar, he sang a few Slim Dusty songs during our drive which made the trip extremely enjoyable and put everyone in a great musical mood. Following on the country theme, The Pure Drop Band were performing and were very different to the usual live entertainment. Enjoyed by all and as usual the meal was superb, although a bit large for some.

25th September: This week we had a lovely day in-house, the sun was shining and the birds were singing. Upon arrival we warmed ourselves outside in the glorious sunshine, gee we missed it over winter. Everyone brought a plate to share so we sat around eating and chatting. The general consensus is what a fabulous year we have had. The scheduled activities and outings have been fantastic, really interesting and varied, we are a lucky bunch. Getting ready for summer and our bikini bodies, we had a no carb lunch…lol! We had our tech session and it was great. We explored our new iPads, learning to open apps, be aware of ads, how to close unwanted pop-ups and enjoyed a few brain training word games. Laughs were had by all. COMMUNITY - ARMISTICE DAY – THE END OF THE GREAT WAR Sunday 11 November 2018 The Eleven hour of the Eleventh Day 1918 marks the end of World War One. A day to celebrate and a day to remember. The Girgarre RSL, in conjunction with the Development Group and the School Centenary Committee have planned a special event as a dedication to the memory of the fallen and to celebrate the end of what has become known as The Great War. The scene will be set by a procession led by a WW1 Horse drawn Field Ambulance, courtesy of Bernie Ryan who will give a brief talk on its history as a former Butchers Cart.

Walking along side the Field Ambulance will be a lady dressed in an original WW1 Nurses uniform, loaned by Tatura R.S.L SubBranch. Followed by one or two Light Horsemen in full uniform organised and led by Noel Wiltshire of Kotupna. The two local School Captains Jasmine Wesley and Hayley Hancock, dressed in period costume are also taking part.

The procession will start at the corner of Station Street and Winter Road at approximately 10.45am and proceed to the Cenotaph opposite the R.S.L building. At 10.30am the Australian Flag will be lowered to half mast as sign of respect to our fallen soldiers; at 2 minutes past 11 it will be raised again. Five minutes of music simulating gunfire will lead into the eleventh hour, marking the end of the war.

Mr Laurie Young, President of the Girgarre Sub-branch will speak briefly then lead prayers and a reading of the Flanders Field and Responses to mark the end of the formal proceedings.

Everyone is invited to attend the unveiling of an information panel dedicated to our districts WW1 Soldiers over the road in the R.S.L premises following the Remembrance Ceremony and parade.

This war touched so many people, soldiers, nurses, families, relations and friends. Thousands of loved ones separated by distance and a cruel war, which, in a perverse way, linked thousands of Australians through a common bond of struggle Geoffrey toured the war fields of France, Gallipoli and Belgium and in 2017 he took part in the commemoration of the charge at Beersheba.

Making Music Magic in Girgarre Bush Dance There’s no doubt about the organisers of the Girgarre’s annual Bush Dance when it come to a crisis. They have style - staying cool, calm and collected when faced with a prolonged power failure just as dinner for 80 or so patrons needed to be cooked. Alternative sources for cooking and lighting were swiftly found, although not needed in the end, as Powercor came to the party and things proceeded under more normal circumstances. The meal was scrumptious, ably delivered by members of the local CFA and Chef Bernie Ryan.

St Germain’s John Russell and his family called the tunes and demonstrated the dances. The floor was soon filled with much twirling and weaving to dance sets like the ‘Waves of Tory’ and the Gay Gordons’. The Billabong Bushies Band were lively and loud and the food nice and hot. As the old saying goes- ‘all’s well that ends well’ and the dinner and bush dance was another great success for Girgarre.

Jigarre Jammin’ Camp Weekend Camp weekends are now a well established part of the Jigarre Jammin’ calendar. Each April and September fans of Jigarre Jammin’ park their tents and vans around the Girgarre Hall for a whole weekend of workshops and entertainment. The social side of these weekends is fantastic as old and new friends get together in the beautiful sunshine to play music or catching up with news. There were 30 happy campers dotted around on the weekend of 21-23 September. The weather was glorious and the sound of music ringing around the park was lovely. There were campers from as far away as Yarrawonga and Wangaratta and the various suburbs of Melbourne.

To make it an even more successful weekend the Jigarre Jammin’ team always organise extra events on top of the regular Jigarre Jammin’ program. Saturday 22 was no exception. A singing workshop led by Margi Chowanetz and Di Mackrell from the Euroa Vocal Nosh team and Patti Harrison and Wallace Williams from the Jigarre Jammin’ team presented a wonderful session of simple rounds and harmonies. When you hear 50+ voices singing ‘When the Saints Go Marching’ in four parts, it almost lifts the roof of the building. Saturday night’s concert also attracted a good crowd. Kyabram’s Bush Poet, Mick Coventry and the Campaspe Players presented an excerpt from the show ‘The People’s Poet: Henry Lawson in Verse and Song’.

The talents of local bands ‘Spare Parts’ and ‘Pure Drop’, and artists Kim Burns and Mick Crawford were highlights.

‘The Healers’ from over Lockington way finished off a great evening’s entertainment with their lively blues rock style. Supper followed.

HISTORY MAKING YEAR FOR GFNC—PREMIERSHIP FOR THE NETBALLERS Girgarre fielded two teams in the recent 2018 KDFNL Grand Final, the Reserves football team and the 15 & under Netball. It’s the first time in 20 years Girgarre has had a football team in the big dance, and with our 15 &U girls fighting it out for the second year in a row, there was a lot of excitement around the Club. We did 100+ meals in the Clubrooms on the last Thursday night training!!!

The day started well with Sheree Starling, Dave Cartwright and the girls hitting the court at 9am against Merrigum. The girls went in as underdogs, having lost to Merrigum twice during the season, but you wouldn’t have known watching them play on the day. Despite the first quarter nerves, they kept themselves right in it with a low scoring quarter 3 to 7.

The second quarter saw the nerves settle and they started to show some of the skill and passion we have come to expect; only 1 goal down at half time. The third quarter was ours.

Fighting to be 2 goals up at the end of the third quarter, our girls then took the court in the final quarter and Merrigum didn’t know what hit them!! With only a few minutes to go they were up by 6, ensuring that the Premiership cup was theirs this year!! Final scores were 31-24 with Libby Pangrazio taking out umpires Best on Court with her numerous intercepts and strong defence during the game. Well done Libby. She also went on to take out the K.D.F.N.L U15 Best &

Fairest.

It was the Reserves turn next, the huge crowd of blue and white made their way from the netball courts to the football field to support our boys as they took on Stanhope. The first half was an even contest with immense pressure from both sides to keep scores low with Gig up 2.3-15 to 1.7-13.

Sadly, our boys were overrun in the last half with Stanhope eventually winning, final scores being 2.6-18 to 4.16 -40. The boys are keen to make it one better next year.

Close to 200 adults and kids then headed back to the Clubrooms to celebrate with the winners or commiserate with the footy team. A huge cheer went up as the 15&U girls entered the rooms, and from then on you would never have guessed that only one of the two teams won on the day. It was one big family celebration.

A huge congratulations must also go to the 17 &U girls, Sheree and Cate who made it to the second round of finals, only going down in overtime. The Club is very proud of all three teams who made it through to the finals this year, and we look forward to a well-earned break before returning for and equally successful season in 2019. Rushworth and District Community Bank It is now 20 years since Community Banking was first initiated by the Bendigo Bank.

Myself and three fellow Directors joined in the celebrations at the Community Bank Conference in Bendigo recently where we heard some very inspiring speakers. To quote one of the national council members “…we (Community Banking) are arguably the largest social enterprise company in the world...”

The Rushworth and District Community Bank has been operating for 16 years now, ensuring banking services stayed in the community and investing $900,000 back into the community. Everyone benefits so much from something as simple as local banking. We congratulate, and thank all of our customers, it wouldn’t be possible without you. If you are not yet a customer we encourage you to speak to Kevin, or one of our staff in Rushworth or Stanhope to see what the community bank can do for you; and in return what you can do for your community. It’s a great feeling to know you

belong and are part of the growth of a local community.

Girgarre is a part of that great sense of belonging and shows what can be achieved when you have a dream and the passion and commitment to pursue it. Once again we are happy to be supporting the Girgarre community by allocating $1000 to the Girgarre Cricket Club to purchase new equipment and $400 to the Community Cottage in support of the Open Gardens Day. I am looking forward to the presentation of these and the opportunity to speak to members and families of the district.

I am also looking forward to attending the Open Gardens Day on 28th October and hope to see you there. It’s a great day out for everyone and supports the community car and the Gargarro Gardens Project.
