Food, coffee and much, much more available after the event! If you are going to register on the day, please bring cash as we will not have eftpos available. Come and join us this Mother’s Day for our second MDC!

Also at the April Market was our Mother’s Day Classic stand, raising awareness for our walk this Mother’s Day. I need to say a very heartfelt thanks to my Mum, Marilyn Ross, pictured above. Marilyn not only judged the Vegie Competition, but also staffed this stand for me, sharing information and promoting our event-even though she was not feeling 100%. Thanks Mum, you are a ripper! May promises to be just as busy as April. I have a Victorian Active Aging Seminar in Bendigo; the Neighbourhood House 3 Day conference in Yarra Valley; The Mother’s Day Classis Walk, 4 scheduled meetings; Volunteer Wellbeing Day (15/5); Biggest Morning Tea 21/5 First Aid Course and my daughters Debutante Ball. Throw in my personal life as a coordinator of Children’s activities; netball, after school work, football,

cadets, trainings and playdates and you can see why I am looking forward to June! I know we should not wish our lives away but… Before I go, I need to acknowledge the wonderful donation of computers made to us by PEATS in Echuca. We received 6 refurbished computers to give to those in our community who are in need. We have already found homes for three, however if you think you or someone you know would benefit from one and you fit our criteria, please pop in and see me or give me a buzz. Please like and follow our Facebook page “Girgarre Community Cottage” and check out the Girgarre Website www.girgarre.com.au for more information. Thanks and bye for now. Kezia

Australian Consolidated Milk Official Opening

Left: General Manager, Michael Auld and Chief Operating Officer, Jason Limbrick. Above right and below: Visitors at the opening.

A large crowd of locals, General Manager Mr. Michael Auld, Senior staff, Shire of Campaspe representatives Cr John Zobec and Shire General manager Keith Oberin; visiting dignitaries and the Federal Member for Murray, the Honourable Mr. Damian Drum were on site at the brand spanking new ACM factory for it’s official opening on Tuesday 9 April. Addressing the crowd, ACM General Manager, Michael Auld said the company began in partnership with Freedom Foods 12 years ago, but changes in consumer trends towards organic presented an expanding opportunity for ACM to gain it’s own identity through a stand alone facility. The new facility would also include the ability to build flexibility into production for the future maximizing the farm gate price for suppliers. He also said the build had gone smoothly and he appreciated the support the company had received from it’s contractors. THE FUTURE FOR GIRGARRE EXCITING Member for Murray, Damian Drum said the new factory was a fantastic opportunity for the community and the Dairy Industry. People are excited about the future for Girgarre and that the support of Regional Development Victoria had been an essential element in the development of the new factory. February 2019 was the first time milk had been processed in Girgarre in 40 years. THE GUIDED TOUR Following the speeches and the cutting of the ribbon, visitors were invited to take part in a guided tour of the

state-of-the-art factory. Dressed in the required safety gear, our guide Craig explained the workings of what is the first of its kind in Australia A fully computerised system geared to producing high quality cream and UHT milk, mostly for the export market. The factory is capable of producing regular, A2 and organic milk product, powder, butter and cream. The heart centre of the building is the computer room. Operators can see at a glance what is happening where. The 14 full time staff and 5 casuals were initially trained over in the former Heinz factory on simulated systems for many weeks. Craig said that while the simulated system was accurate it was still a steep learning curve for staff once they were faced with the real thing. Following the tour Chief Operating Officer Jason Limbrick said the availability of land and water was a crucial factor in choosing Girgarre as a site for the factory. The waste water treatment plant behind the buildings is large and complex, the water that starts out as factory waste is treated to a level suitable for irrigation and goes to a neighbouring farm. ORGANIC BUTTER AND MILK FOR COLES AND WOOLWORTHS The company recently announced plans to expand into cheese manufacture. A new building program is planned for this year, set to open in January 2020 and the company has just announced that their organic butter and milk will soon be available in Coles Supermarkets. Generous support from the local community

Girgarre Football Teams – Soft Fall Locals stepped up to the mark recently, making the first Kyabram Preschool Management Committee (KPMC) term at Girgarre Kinder a great one! All the kids have settled arranged for our playground soft fall to be topped up, in really well and enjoying the games, songs activities and ensuring the continued safety of our children. events provided by Robyn, Kylie & Kerrie. In addition, there The delivery was the easy part, the spreading was was a welcome picnic for all families to meet each other, visits from Mechelle’s farm animals, GV Water incursion, Easter themed crafts and so much more. Aside from the daily routine, there has also been a lot happening at the kinder behind the scenes. So much generosity and kindness that we would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the following groups; Girgarre Cricket Club - Drink Bottle Holders Previously, the children’s drink bottles were placed in a trolley which was wheeled inside and outside throughout the kinder day with bottles endlessly falling over. Excursions were less than ideal with a plastic washing basket full of bottles awkwardly carried around by staff or volunteer parents. The new holders are perfect and the kinder was very s urprised and appreciative when David ‘Ducky’ Asquith kindly organised them and advised us that they were 100% donated by the Girgarre Cricket Club. Stanhope’s Fonterra Cheese Factory Home Corner- Thank you to Annie and Fonterra who donated and delivered to Girgarre Community Kindergarten a timber home corner oven. Such a lovely surprise!

going to be more challenging and time consuming. That was until Shannon Tucker (coach) and his footy boys chipped in. With wheelbarrows, shovels, pitch forks, rakes, the huge pile of soft fall was neatly placed into position. Thanks a heap boys and good luck for the season! Dhurringile Prison – Painting & Gardening Over the Easter school holidays a community work force of prisoners from Dhurringile Prison spent two days at our kinder sprucing it up in readiness for Term Two. They sanded and painted our tired looking cubby, as well as the sandpit edging and swing supports. The garden got attention too. Pruning, weeding, hedge trimming and mowing our lawns. Thank you to Cristian and his boys for the awesome job. The Kinder looks amazing!

Rural Aid Gift of Music and the Australian Army Band Wow, what a morning! Rural Aid, who many of you may recognise as the organisation associated with Buy a Bale, went on a road trip around rural communities spreading the Gift of Music. The Australian Army Band joined them on their road trip and educated the children on the various instruments whilst they belted out some wellknown tunes. The vibes were high and all kids (and majority of parents and teachers) were up on their feet dancing and moving with smiles for miles. As well as the gift of music the Gig Kinder was given three Duplo sets which was very much appreciated.

Plenty of Interest at April’s Market A large crowd enjoyed a pleasant autumn day, a great variety of handmade baked goods, craft, boutique bread and olive oil, fresh meat, fruit and veg. It was pleasant catching up with friends or sitting with a coffee listening to the popular band ‘True Country’ Monster Chook Auction

and ringneck parrots for the caged bird buyers. In total it was estimated that over 1000 birds were sold at the market. 646 lots is by far a record auction. Last years peak of 570 was the previous record. There were over 70 different sellers and over 130 registered buyers on the day, most of whom came some distance to be there. Sale results on the day were very good ranging from $1 to the highest sale achieved at $210. The overall result was very good. A big thankyou to our happy band of volunteers who were certainly under the pump with such a large market but all went smoothly and we were all packed up by 1.30pm.

Over on the reserve, the chook auction was an attraction in itself. Auctioneers Greg Fitzpatrick and Les Mitchell were more than happy with the clearance rate of close to 100%. Layers are always sought after and there is a sound market for the roosters, one buyer purchasing enough to convert into his chicken stock supply for the winter. Looking forward to seeing everyone on 12 May for the next Around 650 lots were on offer including a wide chook auction. (Greg Fitzpatrick) variety of chooks, eggs, guinea fowl, ducks, geese and turkeys. There was also a good selection of budgies, canaries A good line up of chicken stock to choose from attracted many keen buyers

Your Invite to a Rushworth & District Community Bank Hosted Event Motor vehicle accidents and the associated trauma, deaths and injuries that come with them occur on regional roads at five times the rate of the city in Victoria. John Maher, founder of one of Australia’s foremost road safety organisations, Carman’s Road Safety Education Program is sponsored by a group of Bendigo Community Bank® branches. John will present a series of talks across the region in May in an effort to help reduce road accidents and save lives. He is an internationally renowned motivational speaker who has changed the lives of thousands of attendees at corporate events and schools. Sixteen years ago, John was involved in an horrific car crash whilst manager of a large Life Insurance company in Bendigo. He received life threatening injuries and as a result, was classed as unemployable at age 42. With the help of doctors and his family, John worked hard at recovering his mental and physical self, but sadly, a greater

tragedy was to come when Carmen, the youngest of John and Ange Maher’s four daughters, was killed in a car crash at only 18 years old. Out of this tragedy was born Carmen’s Road Safety Education program. It leading John onto a new career path as a dedicaPed campaigner for road safety. You are invited to come to Rushworth on Tuesday 21st May 2019 to hear John speak more about his own life and the impact of road trauma on his family. To be held at the Rushworth Recreation Reserve at 7pm. This FREE event is for everyone, especially parents of young drivers. All are encouraged to come. John’s is an interesting life story; you will never take life, and your role in it for granted ever again. I cannot emphasise enough how important this event is. Not to be missed. Hope to see you there. Christine Borger. Chair, Rushworth and District Community Bank.

LENDING A HELPING HAND - FOOD SHARE IN GIRGARRE Food Share is an Australia wide organisation that distributes food to local groups who then distribute the goods to individual families in need. The Merrigum based Shalom Worship Centre are one such group in the district who, under the Food Share umbrella, have been responding to local and district requests for assistance, including those from Girgarre. The old supermarket, next to the Girgarre Post Office was seen as an ideal distribution point for the local community and owners Susan and David Fulton were happy to be part of this move to streamline distribution in the Girgarre area. There is no cost to this service and no criteria to meet. As Susan and David say “if you need food, then we will do our best to help out”. Confidentiality Ensured The service offered by Susan and David is entirely confidential and anyone in need of food, or dropping off donations, is encouraged to TEXT “FOOD” to Susan's phone number 0407 886 307. Mobile coverage is not good in Girgarre, texting works best. Add more details to the message if you would like to. Susan said recently “ We are not a replacement for a shop, but are a ‘stop gap’ as and when required”. Availability for supplies is not limited to business hours but Susan requests no contact between the hours of 2.30 and 4pm unless it’s urgent. Home Delivery For Farmers Home delivery for Farmers and others who for some reason cannot readily come in is available. Susan and David are also happy to help if you need to collect food for someone else.

”take what you need, help out as you can”. David, who has been a farmer all his life until a relatively recent illness, says “some people bring surplus food to share either from their garden or out of their own cupboard. Others either bring or take food and then stay and help out. There’s always a floor to be swept or mopped, boxes unpacked, anyone can be involved. Our motto is ‘take what you need, help out as you can’. It is all appreciated” he said. Susan and David also thank the donors who leave items outside their door. They regularly check to see what’s there but say it would be helpful if donors send a text saying “check your door” or similar. They will always respond. Please include a label if items are home made stating what the article is; the date it was made and the ingredients. You are welcome to drop in to Girgarre's Food Share. Sometimes the biggest help is to come and collect what you need and then stay awhile to sit and say g'day or offer a helping hand. Susan and David look forward to seeing you soon. That way word will get around to those in need. Details are also up in the front window of the supermarket. Please Note. The other outlet in Girgarre who offer a confidential service for those in need, also under the Food Share umbrella, is the Community Cottage, 27 Olympic St. The Cottage is open between 10 am and 3pm Monday to Thursday. Contact Cottage Coordinator, Kezia on 5854 6482.

A large crowd enjoyed the first chook auction of the year and stall holders reported a morning of good sales. The review of the running of the market including naming, promotion, branding and management continues. Graeme Leak: Graeme Leak’s return trip to Girgarre has been an amazing success. Graeme worked on 3 projects while he was here. The Junkestra: Graeme did a lot of work fine tuning our existing instruments and made several more for the remembers of the orchestra. He also held many rehearsal sessions before travelling to Nathalia for the first of the orchestra’s performances. Graeme conducted his signature piece ‘Spirit Rising’ while Maureen Sheppard, who has taken over the conductor role in Graeme’s absence, conducted ‘Sway’ and Bach’s ‘Jesu Joy of Mans Desiring’. The performance was extremely well received and a load of fun for all the performers. On the 4 May the orchestra is travelling to Melbourne for its second performance at Federation Square (story page 22). Sound Walk: The second project Graeme has been working on has been stage 1 of the Girgarre Sound Walk. Two wonderful musical instruments now grace the railway reserve. The ‘Fire Bells’ built by Rob Axen & Craig Forster with collaboration from Graeme and ‘Piano Piano’ a magnificent installation designed and built by Wallace Williams with again collaboration from Graeme. Come along and have a play -the Fire Bells sound like cathedral bells while Piano Piano can be played in multiple ways. Many thanks to Wallace Williams, Ken Stewart, John Warde, The Dickman Brothers, Noel Mattei, Rob Axen, Craig Forster, Pete Gibson and Dennis Hammond. Instruments for stage 2 are already being dreamed up. Camp Workshop: Graeme’s 3rd project was a workshop at the Jigarre Jammin' camp. Jigarre Jammin: The Jigarre Jammin' camp over was held last

Thirty seven camp sites graced the park, a packed supper room enjoyed walk up concert Friday evening, 80 attended Graeme Leak’s workshop Saturday morning, a Hall packed for Jigarre Jammin' - the sound of so many instruments and so many voices singing was amazing. One hundred people attended the evening concert which had a new initiative “5 minutes of fame” had over 40 people learning a new song which was presented at the evening concert. April’s Jigarre Jammers Camp

An icy blast from the south on Friday 26 April did not deter 37 musically minded campers, the largest crowd ever for a Jigarre Jammin’ Camp which was held on the weekend of 2628 April. The first of the increasingly popular two annual camps, Jammers started to arrive from Thursday to set up on their favourite spot. Tents and vans from near and far dot the park in no time and music wafts across the grounds almost immediately. A couple of free campers happened to get caught up in the Jammers enthusiasm this year too. They popped in and out of the hall to listen to the music and thought it was wonderful. One hundred patrons filled the hall on Saturday night for the concert, a near capacity crowd. The participants in Graeme Leak’s Saturday morning percussion workshop became the opening act for the concert, followed by acts

from a new venture for Jigarre Jammin’ called ‘Five Minutes of Fame’. Over 40 of the campers threw their names into the ring throughout the weekend for the opportunity to become one part of seven small bands; randomly selected and asked to choose a song to rehearse and a name for their group before a one song performance at the concert. The ‘Rolling Stones’, ‘Steptoe and Family’, the ‘Smilers’ and the ‘Kick Start Band’ were some of the names they came up with, as varied as their song offerings. It was terrific fun, followed on by a large contingent from Bendigo’s Goldfields Ukestra, the Billabong Bushies and the Pure Drop Band. All in all, a great evenings entertainment. Girgarre’s small Community Church was also filled to capacity Sunday morning when 20 or so musicians from the camp went over for an Old Time Gospel singalong. It was uplifting, the music and the singing by the spill-over audience ringing out through the doors into the street. This too has become a popular event with the campers and the local congregation alike. The church go-ers appreciate it so much they provide a decadent morning tea afterwards. That goes down a treat with everyone. A pizza lunch, cooked and served by the volunteers; clean up and out in time for the local Patch Worker's to set up the halls for their ‘Quilt In’ the following week finished off a wonderful weekend (more on the ‘Quilt In’ next month).

Sound Walk Officially Launched - Saturday 27 April It was a balmy evening for the much anticipated unveiling of ‘Piano Piano’ and the ‘Fire Bells’ on the newly designated ‘Sound Walk’. Girgarre Development President Jan Smith, the visionary behind the project, and Graeme Leak, whose background is in creating large scale musical installations and instruments from cast off materials, both spoke briefly about the history of the project before declaring it open. The two installations, now clearly visible over on the Railway Reserve, are the work of two very practical and creative men in Rob Axen and Wallace Williams, both of whom willingly responded to the call to assist. Wallace, to find a way to weather proof a piano and Rob to build a set of bells from old fire extinguishers based on those that are a much loved addition to the Primary School playground. Both are a stunning testament to the talent and creativity both

Wallace and Rob. It’s also a stunning testament to the creative spirit of Girgarre, it shines in so many varied ways. And there’s more to come. The unveiling created a lot of interest from those present, keen to try them out, don’t forget to wander over to the Sound Walk and try them out. Piano Piano Designed and built by Wallace Williams. A huge thank you to Rod, Peter and James Dickman for setting the fence posts in place and to Ken Stewart, Pete Gibson, John Warde and Rob Axen for assistance in the installation and set up. Fire Bells Designed and built by Rob Axen with Craig Forster. Thank you to Ken Stewart and Noel Mattei for their help in moving and setting up the bells.

THE BIG GIG - JUNKESTRA OFF TO MELBOURNE

Before heading off to their big gig in Melbourne’s Federation Square on 4 May the Junkestra dressed themselves in their finery for a dress rehearsal concert on Wednesday 24 April in the St Clare Auditorium, Nathalia. A large audience came to watch a short video on the history of re purposed instruments, including some interesting footage of Graeme Leak’s early years as a percussionist, including clips of a successful group he was in playing the music of the Spaghetti Western films.

Are we ready?

The Orchestra leaves by bus with the sparrows on 4 May for Melbourne and a long day of rehearsals culminating in the Grande Finale Concert at 5pm in the Deakin Edge Theatre, Federation Square. There’ll be a full report in the Gazette next month. Below: Pete Gibson and Annette Cowan mixing it up. Right: Wallace Williams, on a re purposed exercise bike assisting Patti Harrison make music.

Seniors Notes 3 April What a wonderful time we had last week on our trip to Barmah National Park. We undertake this outing every year and always have a blast. Debra takes the forest drive route and a different way back allowing us to sight see which we thoroughly enjoy. We came back through Mooroopna and noticed new housing estates and stopped at Merrigum Park to enjoy the greenery and laugh at Debra as she tried to ride the decorative cow. She had much more success with the children’s bumblebee ride. We had a lovely lunch at the Barmah Pub, huge serves and very tasty. We chatted all the way over and had a singalong on the way back.

ensures. A beautiful lunch was prepared by Debra, Indian inspired chicken served with savoury rice, followed by a lemon pie.

10 April We had nearly a full house last week, only two people missing. A great time was had, even though I (Kezia) find it extremely difficult to write about bingo in an exciting way, the Seniors love it. They find the games very enjoyable and quite a lot of banter is exchanged, especially trying to recall if numbers have already been called or not, much laughter

24 April Well, we were a few Grandmothers down last week, as many were minding grandchildren during the school holidays. However, we still had fun laughing and joking about future outings and family life. Warming potato soup with a pork and gravy roll kept us quiet for a while. Get well messages go out to Theresa and Joy who are both recovering well.

17 April We went to Merry Melodies and it was very quiet and subdued. We had a different musician who is wonderful but plays more of a melancholy selection, leaving us in a reflective mood. A few of us quietly slipped off to the pokies, no one came back shouting rounds of drinks so we assume no big winnings were had. The bus trip there and back is always very enjoyable. .

THE SENIORS Left: The ever cheerful Seniors checking the water levels at Goulburn Weir. Right: Dale trying out the flying fox.

ANZAC DAY Below: The visitors enjoying breakfast following the dawn service. Graeme Leak and Maureen Shepherd receive certificates for assisting with the sound for the service. Next month there will be a full report on the Anzac Day Golf and Bowls Day.
