La mia è una ricerca interiore dove la materia non ha più importanza.

I sentimenti, le emozioni sono in primo piano.

Immagino l’ Uomo trasparente, dove le sensazioni e gli stati d’animo prendono luce con il colore ed una reinterpretazione della forma.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

When talking to Giorgio Dalla Costa, one has the feeling that this is a person who has stopped waiting and has decided to act, and to act right now. When I first met him he was involved in the creation of company images and communication projects related to industrial products, and now I find him surrounded by paintings and sketches!

When I asked him the simple question, “How long have you been a painter?” out came piles of sketches, sheets of Tintoretto paper, serviettes that he had drawn on in some bar, and note pads filled with simple yet eloquent sketches that have been developed in his paintings. This is a person in love with his work and art; a person who is, shall we say, very much self-driven and dedicated, but who is always willing to see his activity through the eyes of others. He told me that every picture he produces refers to a particular thought or a phrase; and, in a way, that reminds me a little of what I do myself, as I’m always concerned with thoughts, phrases and giving titles to things. The ‘The torment of pleasure’, ‘The innocence of those who submit to a harsh fate’, ‘Avoiding responsability for our actions, we cannot love and we cannot be loved ’ : they’re all ‘depicted thoughts’ and ‘pictures to be read’. Dalla Costa’s experience as a graphic designer occasionally comes to the fore, as can be seen in his combinations of Indian inks or pastel colours, his knowledge of colour and his use of black and white, … but his forms are liberated by a desire to be frank and open, by a certain immediacy and sincerity. Dalla Costa is more interested in collecting and telling stories than in technique itself. The search for a new theme prevails over the extenuating search for variation and different finishes.

The ideal of perfection is seen as another limitation and Dalla Costa prefers to advocate and nurture new utopias. Loudly or gently whispering, his pictures seem to suggest to us that an illusion cannot be easily replaced by certainty. These ideas are conveyed and

encountered on a difficult, ‘irregular’ terrain, which somehow, by association, reminds us of Giorgio’s great love of cross-country motorcycle racing: “When you take off, the bike and the rider become a single unit; if you lose your feeling of harmony with the bike, you’ll be down in a flash.” This equilibrium of mind and body, following a muddy clay track is not so distant from the work Giorgio does with his pens and pastel colours which cross the canvas like grooves made by imaginary wheels.

Dalla Costa refuses no artistic medium or mode of conveying his ideas: his work permits an immediacy of expression through hastily-produced sketches and drawings and also by means of Internet technology, which allows Dalla Costa’s works – often referred to by the most discerning visual arts and communication websites - to be easily seen all over the world, without any form of impediment or embarrassment. It’s now odd to think that when Giorgio was still a student of art and graphic design, and was ready to enter the world of artistic expression, he was reluctant to show his ideas to others. Too shy perhaps, or too modest? It would seem Dalla Costa has not entirely lost this form of reticence, in perennial conflict with a strongly instinctive and irresistible desire to reveal in yet another picture a new part of himself. We should view all of these pictures to understand the artist who created them and experience his latest surprises: an attempt to eliminate light so as to make the odours of his paintings more sharply evident or creating a sense of disorientation with a strong presence of red, leaving the observer undecided as to what the colour should be attributed to … perhaps hidden anger or perhaps only an underlying shyness? Suffice it then to say he is equal to himself alone, to avoid the embarrassment of any comparison. Let’s ‘listen’ to his pictures speak a language for which no dictionary exists, and which uses only the punctuation of the soul itself.

Giorgio Dalla Costa non è un pittore facile di paesaggi e di ritratti perchè preferisce e vuole esprimere non ciò che vede ma ciò che sente.

Certo è un pittore, perchè come accade spesso ai nostri giorni non ricorre a giochetti con materiale vario messo insieme tanto per stupire la gente che meglio ammira quanto meno non capisce.

Dalla Costa esprime il suo interno sentire nel modo tradizionale: pennello, tavolozza, colori.

Ogni suo quadro prevede una spiegazione prima di tutto fornita da lui stesso e poi, ma solo di conseguenza, da chi commenta la sua opera.

Un modo molto semplice e facile sarebbe quello di guardare e tacere, come suggeriva una certa critica, tanto tutto è inutile: se un quadro è bello non ci resta dire che è bello altrimenti si conduce il “can per l’aia” o meglio tautologicamente si ripetono di continuo le stesse cose.

Ma incalzati da tante brave persone, che vogliono capire o meglio sapere qualcosa sull’autore e sulle sue opere, giustificati dal fatto che non si può amare senza conoscere, avanziamo qualche idea che anche potrebbe essere utile.

A presentazione dei suoi quadri, Dalla Costa dice di sentirsi libero di esprimere le proprie sensazioni e i propri stati d’animo.

E qui siamo nella professione di fede di ogni bravo artista. Ma subito incalza Dalla Costa o ci precisa di voler indagare profondamente sulle proprie sensazioni. Ed è questa una valida giustificazione per l’adesione di Dalla Costa ad un’ arte astratta piuttosto che ad

un’arte figurativa.

Nessun tentativo dunque di seguire una moda, una corrente o meglio imbarcarsi in un gruppo che oggi potrebbe aiutarti a salire.

Di fatto, a guardare bene queste opere esposte, è difficile trovare quei riferimenti che fanno la delizia dei critici d’arte, anche perchè l’autore ha sempre guardato se stesso senza mai tenere davanti l’opera di un grande maestro. In poche parole, la genesi della sua espressione Dalla Costa la riconosce nel passaggio obbligato dell’approfondimento di ogni tipo di realismo per il desiderio di andare oltre la rappresentazione delle cose.

Tutte queste potrebbero soltanto essere belle parole, ormai entrate nell’uso comune, se non ci fosse la dimostrazione ossia la presentazione, la traduzione, nelle forme sensibili delle opere. Per questo Dalla Costa si avvale di una padronanza della linea piegata architettonicamente a sostenere ogni composizione.

La linea non è il ghiribizzo, il ghirigoro, ove non sai dove vada a finire, ma determina la dimensione del colore racchiuso o lasciato libero, sempre con felice accostamento, per accordo ma pure per contrasto, come sempre avviene per chi predilige questo tipo di arte.

Linea e colore sono le componenti positive delle opere di Giorgio Dalla Costa; il resto, ossia il significato, il pensiero segreto, appartiene al soggetto e come tale è più o meno accettabile e non può essere imposto ad alcuno.

Giorgio Dalla Costa is no simple painter of landscapes and portraits, as his preference and main objective is to express not what he sees but rather what he feels.

He is a painter in the real sense because he does not use the ploys and trickery of throwing together a variety of materials - as often occurs nowadays - simply to impress people whose admiration appears to increase as their understanding diminishes.

Dalla Costa expresses his inner feelings in the traditional manner, with his brushes and colours. Each painting he produces is accompanied by an initial explanation provided by the artist himself, and subsequently by those who comment on his work.

Of course, the simplest and easiest attitude to assume is that of the silent observer, as suggested by certain critics; implying that it’s really quite useless to waste words. If a painting satisfies our aesthetic sense, then all we can do is state the fact and not beat about the bush, tautologically uttering the same comments over and over again.

However, encouraged by a number of enthusiastic individuals who wish to know and understand a little more about the artist and his work, a need fully justified by the fact that we cannot appreciate or love anything while we have no knowledge of the object in question, we shall offer a few ideas which might also be useful.

In presenting his work, Dalla Costa says that he is free to express his feelings and his emotions; and such a declaration is what we would normally expect from any artist worthy of the name. However, Dalla Costa is quick to add that his aim is to investigate his own feelings from below the surface. And this is a valid justification for Dalla Costa’s having preferred the abstract rather than the figurative medium. There is thus no attempt

on his part to follow any fashion, a particular trend or adhere to the principles and tenets of a movement or group which might lead on to greater fame.

In actual fact, if we take a close look at this work, it’s hard to find those typical references and links which to a large extent are the delightful ‘stuff’ that art critics depend on.

The artist in this case always makes reference to his own experience as a source of inspiration and has never propped up any famous masterpieces behind his canvas to help him.

To put it simply, Dalla Costa sees the genesis of his work in his desire to go beyond every type of realism and linear, verist reproduction of the elements of life.

Of course, we might take that as a common and even banal observation in the world of art if it were not for the tangible demonstration and presentation of Dalla Costa’s intentions in the paintings and forms he has produced.

And it is clearly evident how the artist has a masterful ‘architectural’ skill with the lines which support every composition.

If these were just doodles or scribbled lines, we would not really know where they might end up. On the contrary, the lines in these paintings determine the boundaries of enclosed or open dimensions and areas of colour, always created with pleasing effects and juxtaposition - with matching or contrasting qualities - as generally occurs in the work of painters who prefer this type of art.

Lines and colours are the positive elements in the works of Giorgio Dalla Costa; all the rest - the meanings and secret thoughts belongs to the subject itself, and as such can be seen as acceptable to a greater or lesser degree and can be imposed upon no-one.

SGUARDO INTERIORE

E’ interessante considerare come Giorgio Dalla Costa, giovane titolare di un’agenzia di pubblicità e, dunque, già impegnato professionalmente sul versante dell’arte applicata, senta il bisogno di raccontarsi, di raccontare i pensieri, le emozioni che gli attraversano la mente ed il corpo trovando espressione in sintesi grafico-pittoriche, in titoli ed espansioni didascaliche dei titoli e delle opere a pastello o a china.

L’abitudine, per esigenza professionale, di ‘mestiere’ direi meglio, all’economia di segni e parole per raggiungere la finalità comunicativa nel modo più diretto ed efficace, il disegno, coniuga in lui con una maturata, sorgiva predisposizione al segno, all’elaborazione di immagini per lo più evocative di emozioni, esperienze, di ricordi prossimi e lontani, di sogni e proiezioni oniriche e della fantasia, in trascrizioni araldiche di forte capacità di convocazione di memoria, di sapienza, di prefigurazione visionaria. Ed è significativo, a me pare, cogliere le modalità che Giorgio Dalla Costa privilegia nel presentare le proprie elaborazioni/riflessioni, impaginandole emergenti da piani modulati dei neri, con ombreggiature verdi o grigio perla, fino a delicatissimi rosati di una veduta paesaggistica tenuta bassa, come paesaggio dell’anima, natura intima. Evidentemente è la pagina interiore, profonda, dove le immagini si formano, per aggallare in parte per presa di coscienza e in parte conservando il mistero dell’inconscio, sollecitate da un pensiero e dalla volontà di visualizzazione, scritturazione e racconto.

Non è un caso, d’altra parte, se Giorgio Dalla Costa ha scelto come medium narrativo i pastelli colorati o la china e il pennarello, tecniche molto vicine alla scrittura nel gesto, nell’andamento corsivo quanto nell’effetto grafico. Il termine disegno (che significativamente nel suo testo Stefano Bertizzolo propone nella trascrizione ‘disegno’, evidenziando la funzione intensiva del prefisso ‘di’ in rapporto al segnare) è quanto mai adatto a orientarci nella comprensione delle elaborazioni di Giorgio Dalla Costa, sia nel significato diretto di rappresentazione grafica e ‘calligrafica’, sia nell’espansione del significato a progetto, a determinazione di un’idea, di pura visione. Il pastello e il tratto a china, con diversa corsività e ritmo differente nello spazio (anche rispetto al disegno a matita) hanno la capacità, appunto, sia di trascrizione che di costruzione e definizione di un pensiero, di un’apparizione mentale, di una similitudine figurale. Il pastello colorato determina percorsi organici, più sensuali ed energetici. Il gesto di Dalla Costa è sicuro, quasi automatico, di immediata, irrevocabile trascrizione del dettato interiore, fatto di una tessitura di vettori rapidi e sicuri e di riempimenti atmosferici di colori forti e saturi, che una volta di più sottolineano la spazialità psicologica dell’accadimento e, dunque, lo sguardo tutto interiore dell’artista, ficcato nell’abisso della psiche, en abîme.

I formati sono generalmente piccoli (prevalentemente al di sotto di trenta centimetri, i maggiori entro i 50 cm) e diventano filtri lenticolari di concentrazione di energia, di movimenti genetici (Il riflesso della vita, 2001; Energia solare, 2002; Fertilità, 2001; Il Valore, Introspezione, L’albero della Vita, Origine, 2001); o sintesi visive di sensazioni diverse come ‘Aroma’, ‘Vuoto’, ‘Sonno’, Il Colore’, e soprattutto stati d’animo (come ‘La Forza’, Tristezza, Stanchezza, Creatività, Precarietà, Speranza, Tenerezza del 2002).

La profondità dello stato d’animo, della sensazione, della condizione psicologica, è determinata dal rapporto qualitativo e quantitativo segno-colore, come presa di coscienza che fiorisce sul cartonlegno sia prima (dettato emotivo) che durante l’esecuzione (proiezione gestuale che si definisce nel fare e che non è

mai del tutto pre-vista). Il pastello restituisce in parte la tattilità della manipolazione e della modellazione delle forme, con allusioni volumetriche, densità atmosferiche, efficaci suggestioni simboliche e araldiche, o di apparizioni di schemi, di volti, ‘maschere’ psichiche, che spiano da dentro (Giudizio, Controllo, Introspezione, Il Possesso, Il Calice, 2001 e Un cuore, Amante del 2002).

La ricerca della ‘maschera’, o meglio sulle molteplici maschere dentro di sé, è uno dei temi più frequentati da Dalla Costa nel suo viaggio introspettivo come percorso che evidenzia non solo le esperienze, ma anche la reazione interpretativa, ora difensiva ora più espressiva, o anche aggressiva oppure accattivante, e comunque sempre mutevole della personalità di fronte al reale e ai movimenti psichici, ai trasalimenti, alle scoperte intime, alle fantasie più febbrili o più lievi e poetiche: percorso nell’abisso della psiche e, quindi, compiuto costantemente sollecitando col segno, nella tecnica a pastello e nei tratti di china, i nodi, i depositi di emozione, di memoria, gli spunti di innesco dell’azione. L’autoritratto shakespeariano è, in tale contesto, assai rivelatore di questo comunicare di Dalla Costa attraverso l’evocazione di maschere recitanti e attraverso pensieri che diventano percorsi segnici e cromatici e quindi immagini, o per mezzo di immagini che suscitano la parola e la sintesi di un pensiero, di un’azione corsiva.

Le chine a tratto nascono evidentemente dalla gestualità automatica e insistita (e qui bene ‘ordinata’, impaginata) del “ghirigoro” come impulso segnico che accompagna libere riflessioni, vagheggiamenti e distrazioni della mente, o indugi e sospensioni, così da diventare particolarmente indicativo e significativo di movimenti psichici anche profondi, e di un immaginario stratificato tra inconscio e una consapevolezza di attutita vigilanza in attesa di emergenze.

La tessitura a china meglio corrisponde all’idea del quadro che Dalla Costa vuol comunicare, cioè di una struttura trasparente tra fuori, dentro e oltre, in continuità tra fisico e psichico, tra reale e visionario,tra passato, presente e futuro. Le opere a pastello sono spazi concavi, accoglienti, energia in espansione per lo più centrifuga, mentre le chine sono in superficie, trame che si lasciano attraversare, che si sovrappongono senza intrecciasi e in cui, ogni tanto compare un ordito cromatico, non sempre e mai per dare sostanza, volume al di-segno, quanto per offrire ulteriore testimonianza di sentimento, di movimento, di atmosfera. A volte il di-segno, cioè la riconoscibilità di una figura e di un’espressione (cigni, colomba,volti), è cercata, costruita, altre volte la prima intenzione si lascia guidare dagli automatismi segnici, o, anche, l’intenzionalità interviene dopo, come a concludere un errare della mente e del cuore su piani, sfaccettature e vettori diversi, in uno svariare di emozioni che richiedono rapida esecuzione, immediata trascrizione. Le dimensioni delle chine su cartonlegno sono maggiori rispetto ai pastelli, perché il gesto si allarga e meglio corrisponde sia al braccio che a una volontà di trasparenza nella misura e nelle evoluzioni del ductus , arioso, per campi e fasci di innervature più o meno frequenti, tratteggi ora lunghi e filamentosi ora brevissimi per addensamenti e distensione delle vibrazioni ritmiche e di energia, e non per dare volume alla forma. Il movimento si compie tutto in superficie dello schermo introspettivo, come in un caleidoscopio di tessere segniche che sembrano inseguire quella che Dalla Costa stesso vive come ‘fluidità’ dell’inconscio.

E i soggetti sono sempre visioni interiorizzate, determinate da sentimenti o che determinano stati d’animo (Svuotarsi, 2002; Vergogna, Innocenza, Il Tradimento) e sviluppi concettuali (Virilità, Doppiamente, L’analisi di se stesso, Orizzonti, Enigma, Femmina, 2002).

Così come il pensiero diventa segno, tessitura, atmosfera cromatica, anche la rappresentazione grafica a pastello o a tratto di china e o pennarello tende a diventare luce,

momento di focalizzazione di energia e di pensiero (satori, illuminazione conoscitiva, aforisma) che Dalla Costa traduce nelle parole dei sottotitoli mirati a intensificare, a espandere il ‘senso’ o sentimento esistenziale della visione e del titolo e significato attribuito alla visione. “La mia - scrive Dalla Costa – è una ricerca interiore, dove la materia non ha più importanza”, cioè la materia opaca e pesante, che ripropone corpi, oggetti, forme accampate nello spazio come replica del reale, mentre l’autore guarda al mondo delle ombre, delle visioni e apparizioni, ascolta le voci di dentro, sollecita le elaborazioni dei sensi, della memoria, della mente, le aspettative del corpo, della propria formazione culturale e dell’esperienza esistenziale quotidiana, evidentemente cercando di alleggerirle e di confermare e consolidare quegli aspetti positivi del carattere e della personalità capaci di mediare con la realtà e di armonizzare il rapporto tra sfera individuale e sfera sociale, collettiva.

Il viaggio di Giorgio Dalla Costa si configura, quindi, soprattutto come viaggio conoscitivo: visualizzazione grafico-pittorica di ciò che egli sa di sé e delle molteplici, elastiche ‘maschere’ che caratterizzano la mobilità della psiche, e sintetica verbalizzazione dei sentimenti, pensieri e concetti, delle esperienze di vita collegate, nella convinzione che all’inizio c’è il verbo, la parola, e che, dunque, solo ciò che viene e può essere detto e comunicato ha realtà e verità. E’, a ben vedere, una reazione alla cultura mediatica, omologata, omogeneizzata, confezionata superficiale e virtuale, senza consistenza di esperienza materiale e diretta, incapace di creare memoria.

Dalla Costa, voglio dire, è alla ricerca delle reazioni e creazioni del centro psichico (Anima? Intelligenza? Personalità? Sensibilità?) in cui si amalgamano in modo diverso per ciascuno la memoria biologica, genetica, e la memoria personale, esistenziale storica, capacità di gestione dei sensi, della percezione interna ed esterna, i dati della reattività personale, emotiva, concettuale, propositiva così diversa in ogni individuo.

E’ un lungo e non facile viaggio, ma, indubbiamente, comporta un itinerario ricco di sorprese, di scoperte, di ‘invenzioni’ che Giorgio Dalla Costa traduce in comunicazioni visive e verbali efficaci, ma al tempo stesso intimamente collegate al mondo dell’inconscio, degli automatismi psichici per molta parte indicibile, inafferrabile, eppure costante nutrimento di suggestioni, di immagini, di modulazioni del senso e del pensiero.

INNER REFLECTIONS OF

Giorgio Dalla Costa

Giorgio Dalla Costa is the young owner of an advertising agency, and as such is already strongly committed to applied art. It is interesting to note how this designer and artist feels a strong desire to reveal his inner self and thoughts and how he needs to express through his works various emotions which he experiences in both his mind and body; how he translates and expresses these thoughts and feelings in synthetic, ‘graphic’, pictorial forms, brief titles and descriptive sub-titles to his works in pastel colours and ink.

In Dalla Costa’s work we find reflections of a need to economise at the level of artistic content and words in order to facilitate attainment of a communicative goal (through the drawings themselves) in the most direct and effective manner. An acquired habit typical of his profession or, perhaps, more appropriately, we might say, of his ‘craft’, is linked with a gradually matured, predisposition to generate and communicate through ‘signs’ and elaborated imagery, which themselves evoke emotions, experiences, memories both recent and old, the content of dreams and onirical, imaginative ‘projections’. In these heraldic transcriptions we note a strong capacity to recall past images combined with a propensity towards expressing and conveying knowledge and a sort of visionary prerepresentation.

It is moreover worth noting which particular media Dalla Costa adopts to present these ‘elaborations’ and reflections, when he ‘pages them up’ to emerge from modulated planes in black, green or pearl grey and very delicate pinks which one might view as ‘low-tone’ landscapes of the soul, a very intimate nature.

These are evidently ‘pages’ of deep inner recesses of the soul, upon which images are formed; images which slowly come to light, partly because of a dawning awareness and partly preserving the mysteries of the sub-conscious; images solicited by a thought and the desire to visualise, to portray, depict and reveal, almost as if in written form, what is known and what is felt.

It was perhaps no mere coincidence that Dalla Costa chose as his ‘narrative’ medium coloured pastels, inks, brushes and techniques quite close to those used in writing on account of the gestural movements they involve, their ‘italic’ rhythm and graphic effects.

The term disegno [1] (the origin of which is significantly highlighted in a text by Stefano Bertizzolo, who transcribes the word as ‘di-segno’, separating the prefix and main semantic root) is useful as it perfectly fits and helps us understand the elaborative process involved in Giorgio Dalla Costa’s work considering its direct meaning of ‘graphic’ or ‘calligraphic representation’ and also its wider sense of ‘planning’ or ‘identifying’ an idea or primitive concept.

Pastel colours and ink - with their different cursive character and spatial rhythms (also with respect to pencil drawings) – can be used to both transcribe and also construct and define thoughts, mental apparitions and symbolic figurative representation.

The pastel colours establish more sensual, energetic, ‘organic’ pathways. Dalla Costa’s ‘gestures’ are sure, almost automatic, and immediately and irrevocably offer transcriptions of feelings dictated from within, made up of a weave of rapid, secure vectors and the suggestive, pervasive presence of strong, saturated colours, which even further emphasise a psychological dimensioning of the occurrence and thus the fully inward gaze of the artist, which surveys the abyss of the psyche, ‘en abime’.

The formats of Dalla Costa’s works are generally small, mostly less than 30 centimetres, with the largest works less than 50 cm. They can be seen as lentiform filters of concentrated energy, and ‘generative movements’: cfr. Il riflesso della vita (2001); Energia solare (2002); Fertilità (2001); Il Valore, Introspezione, L’albero della Vita and Origine (2001); or visual syntheses of a variety of sensations such as Aroma, Vuoto, Sonno and Il Colore, and especially of particular moods as in La Forza, Tristezza, Stanchezza, Creatività, Precarietà, Speranza and Tenerezza (2002).

The depth of moods, of sensations and psychological conditions is determined by the relationship existing between signs and images and the colours used in terms of both quality and quantity. It is as if we were witnessing the artist’s sudden awareness and realisation of the presence of inner feelings reflected on the cardboard both before (cfr. feelings dictated from within) and during the actual execution of the works (cfr. gestural ‘projections’ defined as they occur and which are never premeditated).

The pastel colours partly restore the tactile experience of the manipulation and modelling of forms - with volumetric allusions, deeply suggestive atmospheres, effective symbolic and heraldic suggestions - or the apparitions of schematic imagery, faces and psychic ‘masks’, spying from the depths of the inner self (cfr. Giudizio, Controllo, Introspezione, Il Possesso and Il Calice (2001) and Un cuore and Amante (2002).

The study of ‘masks’ or rather of the many masks within oneself is one of the themes Dalla Costa pursues most in his introspective journeys. His investigation of these phenomena not only highlights personal experiences but also interpretative reactions, at times defensive and other times more expressive, or even aggressive or captivating; in any case ever-changing, study of the personality as it comes face to face with reality and its own psychic ‘movements’, shocks, intimate discoveries and febrile, agitated or mild, poetic fantasies. This is a path which leads into the abyss of the psyche and therefore is constantly followed, soliciting and invoking – through signs and the techniques of pastel colours and ink - knots and traces of emotions and memories and the points where action itself is triggered and cast.

In this context, we can speak in terms of a very revealing kind of Shakespearian selfportrait created by Dalla Costa’s communicative, actor’s masks and thoughts which are transformed into signs and colours and images or by means of images that in turn stimulate associated words and synthetic summaries of thoughts and the course of action.

As can be seen, the ink-stroke works are created with the automatic, insistent (well ‘paged-up’ and neat) gestural technique of doodle drawings. These works are created on the basis of impulses which accompany free reflection, daydreams and idle thoughts or lingering moments of ‘suspended existence’. The doodles thus also appear to convey reflections of very deep psychic ‘movements’ and identify the contents of layers of the mind between the subconscious and a slightly muffled vigilant state in which the artist waits for whatever will emerge from the deeper levels of the mind.

His ‘ink-weaving’ corresponds more closely with the concept of art he wishes to convey;

that is, a structure which is ‘transparent’ (between the outside, the inside and beyond), and features a form of continuity created between the physical and the psychic factors, between what is ‘real’ and what is visionary and between the past, present and future. The pastel works are concave, welcoming spaces, generating an expanding energy of a mostly centrifugal kind.

At the superficial level, the works in ink are like networks through which it is possible to pass, and which overlap without interweaving and in which every so often there appears a chromatic weft. It is not always so, and it never provides actual substance and volume to the ‘di-segno’ but rather reinforces the sentiment, ‘movement’ and atmosphere. Occasionally, the ‘di-segno’ – showing a recognisable figure or subject (e.g. swans, doves, faces) - is deliberate and created as such, while at other times an initial intention is guided by ‘automatic’ signs or otherwise intentionally defined images are introduced afterwards as if to conclude a wandering of the mind and heart on different planes, across facets and vectors, with a varying of the emotions that requires rapid reflection and immediate ‘transcription’.

The sizes of the works produced in ink on cardboard are larger than those of the works in pastel colours as the gestures are more extensive and correspond better with the movement of the arm and a desire for transparency in the layout and evolution of the ductus[2]. Here, the effect is one of lightness, as the impulses of the subconscious mind weave through fields and fascia of more or less frequent, nerve-like webbing, along lengthy filaments and short lines and through thickening and spreading rhythmic vibrations and energy; the aim is not to give volume to form.

The movement is completed entirely on the surface of a screen of introspection, as in a kaleidoscope of sign-like tesserae which seem to follow what Dalla Costa experiences as the ‘fluidity’ of the subconscious.

The subjects are always interior visions determined by feelings, or images capable of determining specific moods (cfr. Svuotarsi (2002); Vergogna, Innocenza and Il Tradimento) and the development of concepts (cfr. Virilità, Doppiamente, L’analisi di se stesso, Orizzonti, Enigma and Femmina (2002).

Just as thoughts are transformed into signs, artistic weaves and chromatic atmospheres, graphic representations with pastel colours or ink and/or brush strokes tend to become sources of light and a focusing of energy and thoughts (in stories, illumination leading to knowledge and aphorisms), which Dalla Costa interprets in the words of the sub-titles (which have the aim of intensifying and expanding the ‘sense’ or existential sentiment of the vision) and in the main titles and meanings attributed to the visions. Dalla Costa states, “My search occurs internally; it is a search in which matter loses its importance.” That is, dull, heavy matter, which offers bodies, objects and forms set in spaces as replicas of the content of real life. The artist investigates a world of shadows, visions and apparitions, he listens to inner voices and invokes an elaboration of the senses, memory and mind. He reflects on corporeal expectations, his own cultural training and daily existential experience, evidently trying to lighten them and attempting to confirm and consolidate those positive aspects of the character and personality which are capable of coping and coming to terms with reality and harmonising the relationship between the individual and social and collective spheres.

The goal of Giorgio Dalla Costa’s ‘journey’ thus appears to be the acquisition of knowledge. His works are graphic and pictorial visualisations of what he knows about himself and of the many, elastic ‘masks’ by which the ever-changing psyche can be characterised. They are a synthetic verbalization of sentiments, thoughts and concepts; they are life experiences linked together, in the conviction that in the beginning there is the word [3], and that thus only what is said and can be said and communicated is real and true. In carefully examining these works, we would conclude by suggesting that they are reactions to that standardised, generally approved culture of modern media, that ready-made, ready-for-use, superficial, virtual culture lacking any consistency in terms of material and direct experience and incapable of creating ‘memories’.

My view is that Dalla Costa searches for the reactions and the creations of the centre of the psyche (the soul? intelligence? personality? sensibility?), at which point there is a blending - in a manner that is unique in every separate individual - of biological and genetic memory and a personal, existential, historic memory, the capacity to ‘manage’ the senses and internal and external perceptions, and the data relating to personal, emotional and conceptual reactions and propositional reactivity which are so different in each individual.

This is a long and difficult journey. Undoubtedly however, this is an itinerary full of surprises, discoveries and ‘inventions’ which Giorgio Dalla Costa transforms into very effective visual and verbal forms of communication. At the same time these ‘forms of communication’ are intimately linked to the world of the subconscious and psychic automatisms, which to a large extent cannot be deciphered or comprehended and yet remain as constant sources of suggestions, images and modulations of sense and thought.
