t the end of the day, no prayer and wishful thinking will save the natural world—salvation will not arrive if we do not take action.

Ice glaciers all over the world are melting in fast rates. Citizens of the Swiss Alps thought of a way on how to at least slow down the liquefaction of the glaciers.

Blankets are used to warm us on cold winter nights but the Swiss people used them to protect their ice glaciers and reduce its seasonal melting up by 70% every summer.

It may be a bizarre situation but this issue is just one the results of the alarming state of global warming and climate change. Since the Industrial Revolution, the world has warmed more than one degree and as it gets hotter, the more that the world is susceptible to catastrophes we have never imagined.

But what could possibly help to save us from the danger? We may acquire all the precious golds in the world but it can do nothing to protect us from this tragedy.

Because in the midst of the deteriorating climate of our only living planet, it is not gold that matters. It is green.

Green energy is more significant than gold.

One of the largest contributors of greenhouse gases is the large energy consumption of humans using fossil fuels and other non-renewable energy. This is why engineers and scientist thought of ways on how to diminish the reliance of people to these energy resources that leave massive carbon footprint.

Keeping The Planet Healthy With Urban Green Energy Through their brilliant minds and passionate hearts to protect the Earth, they have discovered numerous ways to combat the causes of energy pollution.

Solar energy, hydropower, wind energy and biomass are some of those called “green sources of energy.” They are generated from naturally available materials. Engineers have done thorough research through the years to develop machines, equipment and other tools that could help generate power from these sources to deliver efficient and naturefriendly utilities in every home and businesses.

Today, we are fortunate to have passionate and dedicated green energy champions such as Nick Blitterswyk who is an advocate of a cleaner, sustainable and efficient energy. Through his Urban Green Energy (UGE) project which started 10 years ago, they were able to help countries such the US, Canada and the Philippines to expand their potential in solar powering communities.

2. In Calgary, we installed Canada’s largest solar carport for the local Audi dealership; not only do the carports look great and provide affordable, clean energy to the dealership, they also provide enhanced protection to the cars parked underneath.

3. In Cebu, Philippines, we’ve installed one of the countries largest commercial solar installations, a 1,265kW project for Nature’s Spring, the country’s leading bottled water company.

4. In New York City, we were selected to provide solar + storage to 17 small businesses that were affected by Hurricane Sandy, so that the businesses would have enhanced resiliency should such a storm strike New York City again.

6. In Brooklyn, UGE completed a commercial PPA project for Christian Cultural Center, a “mega-church” that is the largest in the NE USA. 7. In Queens, UGE developed New York City’s first community solar project, providing the building owner with an additional source of income by leveraging their roof to install solar and provide the energy to the community.

8. In Philadelphia, UGE was one of the companies involved in an iconic renewable energy installation that includes carport and building-integrated solar, as well as a wind energy installation, for Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles.

9. In Paris, France, UGE worked with the Eiffel Tower to construct a renewable energy installation within the steel structure to power the restaurant within the tower.

10. In Panama, UGE developed a 20+ site project equating to more than 4MW for the country’s leading hardware chain.

Enter aggregation. y joining together, smaller energy users can create enough buying power to make a material impact on a project’s financial outlook, attracting the attention of project developers and opening this impactful solution to a wider range of companies. In addition, by bringing multiple companies into a single procurement, aggregation has the ability to reduce transaction costs and create economies of scale.

In 2018, 3Degrees supported Apple, Akamai Technologies (Akamai), Etsy and Swiss Re as they leveraged their collective buying power in the largest aggregated corporate renewable energy transaction to date.

These announcements send an implicit message that the economic and environmental benefits of contracting with large renewable energy projects are only available to the largest of electricity users.

Challenges News in the corporate renewable energy space is often dominated by announcements of mega- purchases, where a large energy user strikes a deal with the developer of a large wind or solar project.

This aggregation came together when four prospective energy buyers Apple, Akamai, Etsy and Swiss Re - decided to act jointly to purchase renewable energy in the PJM energy market. The participants recognized their common aims through their already-active work in the energy sustainability space - variously as buyer-supplier companies, peer-to-peer colleagues, and as clients of 3Degrees.

They also shared a desire to help prove new renewable energy purchasing models so as to enable other companies to secure renewable supply more quickly and easily.

These four companies, dubbed The PJM Gang, had diverse energy needs but also had corporate renewable energy goals with similar timing requirements and a consistent view toward the importance of making an impact with their purchase.

After the team of buyers was in place, 3Degrees was tasked with finding the perfect blend of projects in terms of

size, technology, location, economics and timing. While generally aligned, each company had unique needs. It was also essential to ensure that all four buyers were ready and willing to move cohesively through the procurement to contract execution.

How we helped 3Degrees led the procurement process, resulting in individual PPAs for each company, while providing stakeholder education and support to each company individually, according to their differing needs.

The first stage of the process consisted of quick market price discovery and analysis to gather the facts necessary

This early market analysis was critical to ensure all companies had a green light for the procurement, as well as gained approval on contract length, acceptable pricing, general terms and conditions, and offtake amounts. Each buyer made a go/no-go decision regarding participation in the second stage.

After all four companies gave the thumbs up, 3Degrees solicited proposals from project developers, validated project development assumptions and completed rigorous risk and financial analyses.

For the shortlisted projects, a deep-dive qualitative due diligence was conducted to provide the four companies with a holistic picture of each project’s viability, the reputation of the developers, as well as background on the developers’ engagement with the local community to date.

For the top ranked projects, 3Degrees evaluated numerous project pricing options to determine the best possible financial offers, then navigated the intricate process of allocating the offtake available from several projects still under consideration among the four buyers – balancing differing project characteristics and financial specifics across the buyers’ needs and aspirations. Next, a custom calculator was developed to compare prices across multiple project combinations, considering a variety of hypothetical wholesale energy market price scenarios which would affect the purchase’s overall economics. Ultimately, the buyers selected an Illinois wind project and a Virginia solar project, agreed upon the final offtake allocation and entered into the contract negotiation phase.

3Degrees supported the buyers throughout the contracting process – acting as a unified voice for the group during negotiations, advising on contract terms and making recommendations based on each client’s unique needs and priorities.

In spite of varying risk tolerances and needs for specific terms, the PJM Gang negotiated from a single set of commercial terms which were ultimately translated into side- by-side PPAs for each buyer and project.

Results 290 MW of additional renewable energy will be coming on-line by the end of 2019 thanks to the joint collaboration of Apple, Akamai, Etsy and Swiss Re. The PJM Gang aggregation is a clear demonstration of how corporate energy buyers of all sizes can successfully purchase renewable energy.

“Etsy is excited to be a part of a project that will benefit both the planet and our customers,” said Rachel Glaser, Etsy Chief Financial Officer. “This agreement will help Etsy to meet our goal of powering operations with 100% renewable electricity while also innovating by paving the way for small companies to participate in the renewable energy market.”

Yet despite the strong business case, achieving the world’s full resource potential requires a significant scaling-up of the share of renewable power in global electricity systems from a quarter today, to around 85 per cent by 2050. This requires efforts to promote systems integration by increasing the flexibility of power systems in supply and demand.

4. Support a portfolio of technology options to electrify and decarbonise end-use sectors The electrification and decarbonisation of end-use sectors such as transportation, heating, cooling and industry lags the renewables momentum for power generation, yet end-use sectors

represent close to 60 per cent of energy related CO2 emissions.

A combination of electrification, technology breakthroughs, and sector-specific global agreements for decarbonisation, are needed according to IRENA’s recent analysis. Francisco Boshell, Analyst – Renewable Energy Technology, Standards and Markets at IRENA said: “Electrifying energy demand of end-use sectors represents a ‘win-win’ that can reduce emissions whilst supporting the integration of higher shares of renewable power.” IRENA indicates that pursuing electrification can double the share of electricity in final energy use in the coming decades.

Innovation is central to decarbonising the energy sector, and international cooperation is critical to innovation, IRENA points out. To stimulate the breakthroughs necessary to advance the energy transition, existing platforms designed to foster international collaboration should be prioritised at a national level. This allows countries to share ideas, pool resources and capital, and co-develop programmes that support common interests.

IRENA Director-General, Adnan Z. Amin Visits World’s Largest CSP Site in Morocco Mr. Adnan Z. Amin, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), congratulated His Majesty, King Mohammed VI of Morocco for his country’s remarkable progress in the pursuit of renewable energy, during a recent visit. Mr. Amin was in Tangiers to attend the 19th Throne Day reception – marking the anniversary of King’s accession to the throne. uring the visit, the Director-General toured the country’s Nour Solar Complex in Ouarzazate – the largest concentrated solar power (CSP) plant in the world, which aims to produce 510 megawatts of CSP in addition to 70 megawatts of solar PV. Once complete, the plant is expected to generate enough power to provide electricity to over one million people and store energy for up to three hours.

GE Renewable Energy acquires WMC wind turbine blade test center in Wieringerwerf, Netherlands Facility will test rotor hubs for GE blades and offer a range of testing services to other industry partners

E Renewable Energy Business, LM Wind Power announced today the planned acquisition of the WMC test facilities in Wieringerwerf, Netherlands. The transaction is expected to close within a few weeks’ time subject to certain pre-completion conditions.

The facility will provide rotor hub testing for new GE turbines and also continue to offer blade and other testing, digital tools, research and similar services to the wider wind industry in Netherlands and elsewhere.

LM Wind Power plans to expand and develop the facility over time. The 23 current employees comprise highly-qualified experts in composites and rotor blade testing. All will be retained to help grow the business.

It has its global management office at World Trade Center, Schiphol, with 44 employees representing 16 nationalities and a research facility in Heerhugowaard with 40 employees representing 14 nationalities. Duke Energy Renewables completes acquisition of Shoreham Solar Commons project from Invenergy Duke Energy Renewables today announced it has completed the acquisition of the 24.9-megawatt Shoreham Solar Commons project on Long Island from Invenergy.

horeham Solar Commons is located in Brookhaven, New York, about 60 miles east of Manhattan, on the site Tallgrass Golf Course.

It was placed into service July 1, and the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is purchasing the power under a 20-year agreement.

“As we continue to provide affordable, renewable energy to customers across the United States, we are especially pleased our first renewables project in New York helps meet the sustainability goals and energy needs of LIPA’s customers and offers economic benefits to the local community,” said Rob Caldwell, president, Duke Energy Renewables and Distributed Energy Technology.

The project is expected to generate between $700,000 and $900,000 in annual tax revenue. The energy produced is estimated to displace 29,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually and create

nearly 1 million megawatt-hours of clean, renewable energy over its lifetime.

“Repurposing the former Tallgrass Golf Course into a solar site eliminates the use of pesticides and fertilizers on the property, protecting Long Island’s fresh water aquifer,” said Invenergy’s EVP and Chief Development Officer Bryan Schueler. “We also planted 2,000 trees on the site, providing further environmental benefits in addition to the generation of renewable energy.”

Bayerische Landesbank, a leading German bank based in Munich, led a German banking consortium, which included Kf W IPEX-Bank and Bremer Kreditbank, to provide senior debt to the project. The deal is supported by German Export Credit Agency, Euler Hermes, which provided an export credit guarantee for the transaction.

This project was awarded to GE Renewable Energy’s onshore wind business, which has committed to provide 26 of its 3.8-130-110HH wind turbines to the Primorskaya WEP and arrange for the installation/commissioning of the turbines to power the wind farm.

part of a two-phase process to build a 200-MW wind farm in Ukraine. Once fully operational by end of 2019, the Primorsk wind farm, equipped with one the most powerful GE onshore turbines, is expected to generate enough electrical energy to power the equivalent of ~350,000 homes in Ukraine. The financing will support subsequent phases of the project and assist Ukraine in meeting its target of generating 11 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020.

Unlocking Geothermal Potential in Japan Through Small-scale Generation Thousands of natural hot springs (or onsen) dot Japan’s countryside, providing a haven for relaxation and contemplation for millions of people. For thousands of years, they have been an important part of the historical and social fabric of the country, and they are represented everywhere from famous ukioy-e woodblock prints from the 18th century to contemporary sitcoms.

oday, however, they have the potential to be an important part of the transformation of Japan’s energy sector, with a power output equivalent to 23 gigawatts (GW) lying beneath the surface in the form of geothermal energy, the world’s third-largest store. The world’s installed capacity for geothermal power was 12.9 gigawatts (GW) in 2017, with a levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) for recent projects ranging from USD 0.04 to around USD 0.13 per kilowatt-hour.

Geothermal power plants are not new to Japan. The first geothermal plant in the country opened in 1924 in Bepphu, with the steam also being used to heat houses and cook food in restaurants.

However, it wasn’t until 1952 when Japan’s first commercial geothermal power station

opened, in the city of Hachimantai in northern Japan. Built by Japan Metal & Chemicals and with turbines by Toshiba, the plant originally provided about 9.5 MW of power, about 40% of its output today, with the residual hot water used for agricultural applications.

Today, Toshiba is the world’s largest supplier of geothermal turbines, followed

by Mitsubishi and Fuji, also Japanese companies. Japan is also one of the world’s largest developers of geothermal projects outside of the country. In Indonesia, Japanese companies are currently financing and building the Sarulla plant, whose output once completed will be 320 MW, the world’s largest. Japanese companies also support Kenya’s geothermal-powered energy transformation, providing turbines, supplying equipment, and constructing mega-projects like the 158 MW Olkaria V

steam power plant in Naivasha.

But despite Japan’s technical and construction preeminence and its significant energy potential, there are only around twenty geothermal plants in Japan,

High upfront costs and rigorous regulatory processes are some of the reasons that the Wasabizawa plant, currently under construction in Akita prefecture, is the first large-scale geothermal project in about 20 years.

projects will adversely affect water supply or quality, or that the plants will have a detrimental impact on hot spring resorts or national parks.

As a result, an important role of the small-scale geothermal plants built since 2012 has been to work closely with onsen operators, hotels and inns to prove that small-scale geothermal power generation can coexist with tourism facilities, without negatively impacting Japan’s natural beauty.

However, in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster the Japanese government introduced new policies to accelerate geothermal power plant deployment.

These included streamlined procedures for the approval of projects in national parks and, crucially, a new higher feed-in tariff (FIT) for small geothermal plants to more than one-and-a-half times of that of larger facilities. This made it profitable to build plants with an output below 7.5 MW, which do not require environmental impact assessments and can be built in around half the time of larger plants.

The first geothermal plant established within a national park was in the Tsuchiyu Onsen hot spring resort in Fukushima city. The plant uses binary cycle geothermal power generation, which relies on working fluids with a boiling point lower than water, such as ammonia or certain hydrocarbons, to drive the turbines. Small-scale binary plants are compact and can take as little as one year to build, and, with a wide distribution of the required low-medium temperature geothermal resources across the country, there is huge potential for this power source to grow in Japan.

These policies have not been unopposed. More than half of the geothermal sources are located around national parks or near the country’s 27,000 thermal springs that onsen rely on for their hot water supply. Critics believe that geothermal

The 2011 earthquake, tsunami and related nuclear accident, had a devastating effect on Fukushima, and on Tsuchiyu Onsen. Aside from the catastrophic impact of the events themselves, the onsen saw a sharp drop in tourists and subsequent

closure of a number of ryokan (traditional Japanese inns). Undaunted, local residents determined to rebuild the town, forming the TsuchiyuOnsen Town Reconstruction and Revitalization Council to lead the creation of an eco-town relying on locally-available clean energy.

According to Katsuichi Kato, President of Genki Up Tsuchiyu, the company in charge of the geothermal power plant, the town started virtually from scratch, without any local expertise in binary power generation, and with substantial administrative and financial hurdles to overcome. Despite this, the town remained resilient and all stakeholders—from ryokan and onsen tourism operators to those in charge of the power plant—worked together to bring about a “miracle”. As Mr. Kato put it, “When forced to stand at the edge of a cliff, unprecedented wisdom and power can arise, but you must have courage, determination and responsibility to make your vision of the future happen.”

For Mr. Kato, the success of the project hinged on the fact that the council developed the plant not solely as a profitmaking venture, ceding control and operations to outside experts, but as a revitalization exercise for the whole town.

This, he believes, imbued it with the sense of purpose and cooperation necessary to rally the spirit of the town to work together to develop a model for an eco-friendly town where benefits are shared.

And benefits there are. According to Mr. Kato, the geothermal plant has been a boon to tourism, adding to the number of people coming to visit the onsen for recreation or health purposes. This is supported by others, including Mr. Kazuhiro Watanabe, owner of the Sansuiso Tsuchiyu Spa, who points out that thousands of people come from all over Japan each year to learn about how the binary plant does not affect the onsen water, bringing a new source of income. As an added bonus, the warm waste water from the binary power plant is supporting aquaculture of giant river prawn. The prawn are served in local hotels and restaurants, and can also be fished by tourists.

Other projects have emulated the success of the Tsuchiyu Onsen geothermal plant. For example, in 2014 the 2 MW Kumamoto geothermal plant, built by Chuo Electric Power Company, was developed in close cooperation with a local hot spring company Waita-kai and the Oguni

resort. In March of this year, oil company Idemitsu Kosan launched a 5MW binary facility in Oita prefecture. A 7 MW plant in Iwate prefecture is expected to begin operation later this year, and is being developed by a venture that includes Japan Metal & Chemicals. Tokyo-based financial services company Orix plans to develop up to 15 small-scale facilities throughout the country, starting with a 4.4 MW plant on the island of Hachijojima in 2022.

Another innovative new approach is a small 70 KW power generator the size of a small freight container that uses hot springs already tapped for hotels and inns to produce power. Developed by Kobe Steel, the system is being introduced in hotels such as the Yufuin Spa in Yufuincho, who can expect to recoup their initial investment in only four years under the government FIT. Strengthened research and devel-

opment, especially with regards to binary and other low temperature systems, can further increase efficiency and reduce the environmental footprint of geothermal plants, while actively engaging onsen and tourism operators as partners in plant development will ensure mutual benefits while reducing negative perceptions.

For Japan, already a global leader in renewable energy technologies and development, that is looking to reduce the risks associated with nuclear energy and the costs and air pollution associated with fossil fuel imports, domestic geothermal energy development can be a win-win scenario. Japan also has a lot to share in terms of its experience and innovations, and can take advantage of global platforms like the International Renewable Energy Agency and the Global Geothermal Alliance to continue to help other countries develop their own geothermal capacity.
